The Midway arena was filled with proud parents and anxious grads as Boundary Central Senior Secondary celebrated its 44th commencement ceremony last Saturday with 27 graduates in the Class of 2014. Speaking on behalf of the Board of Education, trustee Cathy Riddle encouraged the grads to be proud of their accomplishments. “Your hard

work and determination has paid off and will guide you through the next phase of your life’s journey. Stay the course. Continue to trust yourself. Face the world. Don’t be afraid to fail. Ignore the naysayers, work really hard and remember to give something back.” Superintendent Kevin Argue congratulated the class on behalf of School District 51 (Boundary) administration. All in the crowd eagerly took up his invitation to stand and applaud their appreciation for outgoing principal Louise Bay-

Thrift Shop hosts 10th anniversary Submitted

Westbridge Thrift Shop is celebrating its 10 year-anniversary. We are a non-profit organization and all proceeds are used to sustain our community hall. We all know how hard it is nowadays to fundraise. We have dedicated volunteers who work countless hours to make our little shop a huge success. The donations we receive help divert no-longer-wanted, but still useful items from our landfills; reuse, reduce and recycle is our motto. Many of our donations are also passed on to other organizations in need. The SPCA receives

blankets, towel and rags. The women’s transition house receives clothing and gift packs at Christmas. The extra yarn we have is being transformed into quilts that are given to patients at the hospital. We have even sent clothing with a local couple all the way to Mexico to an orphanage. Winter clothing is always a gift to any one in need in our community. We extend special thanks to the Boundary for all your donations and support. Consider the odds If you or your children haven’t been properly immunized against the measles, here are some numbers that really deserve your urgent attention. Your chances of hitting the right number on 6/49 are one in 14 million; in Lotto Max they are one in 28.6 million. Yet we still line up each week to buy in. The Public Health Agency of Canada says the risk of brain infection from measles is one per 1,000 cases. The risk of death is about one in 3,000 cases. Are you willing to line up and play if those are the odds? Measles is one of the most contagious of the infectious diseases. It is spread through the air and can be passed on to others by an infectious person for one to two days before symptoms develop and up to four days after rash onset. In an unvaccinated population, for every individual that has measles, another 15 individuals will get infected. With the flu the corresponding number is two. BC Centre for Disease Control numbers show there were 17 confirmed measles cases in 2013, while 2014 has already seen several hundred cases being reported. Those born before 1970 are considered immune, as measles exposure in childhood was quite common in the decades prior to routine immunization. But for those born after 1970, the only way to achieve full protection against measles is immunization and it takes two doses of the vaccine. In B.C. children routinely receive theirs at 12 months of age and upon starting kindergarten. Those who received only one dose are not considered to be immune. It is very important to verify that two doses of the vaccine have been received. If you are not sure how to access your immunization record or to make an appointment for immunization contact your local public health centre.

After hearing impassioned speeches from public health representatives as well as a parent of a GSM (gender sexual minority) student, school trustees voted in favour of a new GSM policy for the district at the board meeting on June 10. The policy states that students of gender or sexual minorities experience greater levels of abuse, isolation and discrimination at school than heterosexual students. Karly Olsen, Health Promoting Schools coordinator SD51, said that a lack of policy can lead to suicide attempts, mental health issues and developing substance abuse problems. “These are among if not the most vulnerable students in our district,” said Olsen. “Based on those issues alone, I think these issues really warrant our attention and our efforts.” The policy quoted research from a study titled Not Yet Equal: The Health of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth in BC, which states: “Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, GSM students are more likely to: Experience verbal, physical and sexual abuse at school and discrimination in the community; Report higher levels of emotional stress, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts; and feel less safe and connected to family and school.” Research has stated that discrimina-

tion and suicidal ideation and attempts were lower among GSM students who went to schools with GSM policies than those that did not, said Olsen. Board chair Teresa Rezansoff said that the GSM policy was originally raised by the Boundary District Teachers’ Association and was then pursued by the board. A GSM sub-committee was formed which included Olsen, public health nurses Linda Manzon and Heather Shilton, Boundary Teachers’ head Norm Sabourin, superintendent Kevin Argue and school trustee Vicki Gee. Rezansoff said the board was very moved by the presentations which also included a short speech from a local GSM student. “It’s always powerful to hear from students and the community,” said Rezansoff. “The board has been supportive of a GSM policy. The work was in getting it to be something that was workable and would meet our goals.” The new policy is called Respect for Human Diversity: Gender and Sexual Diversity, and states: “The board of education is committed to establishing and maintaining a safe, positive learning and working environment for the entire school community of students, staff and families. This includes those who identify as, or are perceived to be of a gender or sexual minority (GSM).” Some of the GSM policy regulations include:

The device automatically diagnoses abnormal heart rhythm and is able to deliver an electric shock allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. “It is a very important tool to have on your rescue unit,” said Baird. He said the West Boundary Electoral Area grant-in-aid budget also covered the purchase of an AED for the Beaverdell Fire Department.

Staff development will promote opportunities to increase: awareness and understanding of the GSM community; skills in promoting respect for human rights and diversity; skills to intervene effectively in incidents of discrimination, endangerment, harassment or bullying and provide appropriate student support and referral in a timely manner. Programs, curriculum and resources will be used to: Educate students in areas of healthy relationships, diversity and social justice; educate students on the impact of harassment, homophobia and transphobia; encourage teachers to integrate age-appropriate GSM resources throughout a variety of subject areas, so that individuals who identify as GSM see themselves and their lives made visible and reflected positively in the curricula. Safety, anti-harassment and privacy: Homophobic, transphobic and heterosexist behaviours, including discrimination, harassment, exclusion and language that stereotypes will not be tolerated. This applies whether the behaviours and language are based on real or perceived GSM identification. Complaints will be dealt with and consequences will be designed to educate. All persons have a right to privacy, including the right to keep private one’s GSM identity. “We’re hoping the policy will create awareness and provide an opportunity for education for staff, students, parents and other members of the school community,” said Olsen. “We’re hoping that eventually GSM students and families will see themselves reflected positively in our buildings through posters in the hallways, books in the library and other school resources. It’s also about examining systemic issues that are faced by GSM students, staff and families like having inclusive language on school forms and the availability of single-stall genderneutral washrooms. Also, it’s important to note that this policy is not just for GSM students, staff and families; it is for our entire school community. We hope it will help to promote healthier attitudes towards sexuality and gender, which is a part of every human being.” GSM students and families can access sexual health services through the Public Health unit and the Boundary Options for Sexual Health Clinic. ANKORS is the regional organization that provides support, resources and advocacy for individuals with a GSM identity.

Youth missing from Nelson area Submitted

Nelson RCMP are requesting the publics’ assistance in locating Michael Mucha who has gone missing sometime in the early morning of June 17, 2014 from his residence in the 800 block on the North Shore just east of Nelson. Mucha left all his personal belongings at his residence and appears to have left on foot in an unknown direction. Nelson Search and Rescue have conducted a grid search behind Mucha’s residence up the mountainside and the power lines late in the evening on June 17 with no success.

Mucha is described a being male, 21 years of age, 6’2” tall, 150 lbs, blue eyes, short dirty blonde spiky hair with facial hair, wearing a blue plaid shirt, blue jeans and light blue loafer type shoes. If anyone saw Michael Mucha on June 17th, they are urged to call the Nelson RCMP and provide details of the location and or direction of travel Mucha was seen. How can I make sure my mortgage gets paid?

You’re sitting in an office across from a mortgage loans officer. It could be a bank, a credit union, or another lender. You’ve signed all the papers for your mortgage. Now comes a question that you haven’t thought about, “Would you like to have mortgage insurance?” “What’s that?” you ask innocently. “If you die, we’ll pay off your mortgage so your spouse or family doesn’t have to worry about it.” You, like many others, are tempted to respond, “Where do I sign?” But wait a minute! Think about what you’re paying for before you sign up. The major difference between a life insurance policy and mortgage insurance from a lender is control. With a life insurance policy, you decide who the beneficiary will be. With mortgage insurance, the financial institution is the beneficiary and gets all of the death benefit. Your appointed beneficiary gets to choose how to spend the tax-free death benefit from your life insurance policy. They could pay down the mortgage or other debts, or choose to invest the proceeds rather than pay off a low interest mortgage. These options don’t exist when your mortgage lender controls the proceeds. Many homeowners don’t realize that mortgage insurance is often what’s called “decreasing term insurance.” The amount you owe on your mortgage goes down as you make payments on the principal. At the same time, the death benefit goes down by the same amount. But your mortgage insurance premiums stay the same, so you’re actually getting less and less for your money every time you make a mortgage payment.

Here’s another point worth considering. Many homeowners will change mortgage lenders during the time they’re paying off their home, especially if they can get a lower interest rate somewhere else. If you take your mortgage to another company, in most cases, you lose your mortgage insurance and have to apply again at the new company. If you have a life insurance policy to protect your mortgage, and a better rate exists at another lender, you can transfer your mortgage to that company knowing your insurance remains in force. You don’t need to re-apply, and you’re protected from the danger of losing your insurance because of a change in your health. I recently read an article that pointed to lower premiums as being a good reason to choose mortgage lender insurance over life insurance. It said that it is much cheaper to cover your mortgage with a bank policy rather than an insurance company’s policy. This is not always the case as I see in my line of work. Depending on the policyholder’s age and the amount of coverage, individual life insurance coverage will often come in cheaper than the lenders mortgage insurance. The final choice is up to you. Weighing your options will help you get the most out of your money and put you in control!
