Giving life, in death, five years later Five years after his fatal beating in Cloverdale, a blood donor clinic is being held in honour of Matthew Skura
Matt Skura
See e why y
By Sheila Reynolds On the night he was killed in a Cloverdale church parking lot, Matthew Skura had stepped in to help a friend who had been punched in a fight. And now, five years after the 21-year-old’s death, his mom is hoping a blood donor clinic organized in his honour will allow her son to once again give back to others. It was May 28, 2009 when Skura was hanging out

with his friends. They’d been drinking and had a run-in with a group of teens who were also inebriated. Words were exchanged and then punches. One of the teens charged at Skura’s longtime friend, knocking him out. When Skura pulled the attacker away, he was hit with a sucker-punch blow, sending him to the ground. Once there, another teen delivered what would prove to be a fatal kick to Skura’s head.

Tractors built before 1960 are ready to take part in the Vintage Tractor Pull at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino.
Antique tractors set to haul Garden-sized tractors can enter a new event this year By Jennifer Lang The track at Fraser Downs is host to an afternoon of mighty metal competition Saturday when the Antique Tractor Pull gets underway. It’s a free, all-ages event running from noon to 3 p.m. at the racetrack and casino. Traditionally held on or around the same time as the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival in August, this year’s Antique Tractor Pull has been moved up to June 21 to be part of Surrey Doors Open, a citywide festival of events. New this year will be a garden tractor pull, open to anyone.
“Bring your garden tractor down – they’re all welcome,” says organizer Vern Keller, who is expecting between 30 and 40 tractors from across the Lower Mainland to take part in the main event. That’s where competitors driving pre-1960 tractors will square off in 11 different weight categories ranging from 2,500 to 12,500 pounds. Each tractor is hooked up to a sled laden with weights that rise higher in the air as the tractor moves forward. Keller, a John Deere collector, is a longtime resident of Clay-
ton, where his driveway has been dubbed “John Deere Lane.” It’s an all-ages event. It’s free to attend. There will be a barbecue. For more information, call 604308-2443.

new releases on 35-mm film. As a condition of sale, Crossridge Church agreed to make repairs and work out a Heritage Revitalization Agreement with the City of Surrey, which wants the Clova pre-

All-day clinic set for Langley From page one
For several years now, she’s wanted to celebrate her boy, but every time she’d start to put the wheels in motion, she would be too overwhelmed with grief to continue. This year, she managed, somehow, to muster the courage to contact Canadian Blood Services. “Procrastination is a wicked force against grief,” says Vinall. An all-day donor clinic is planned for June 22 in Langley. Vinall would love to see the place full of friends, family and
anyone else who wants to make a blood donation and honour Matthew. Skura, in his death, has already given back. His organs were donated, saving five people’s lives and providing sight to a sixth. “All of those people needed blood to make his gift a success,” Vinall says. The In Memory of Matthew Skura Blood Drive takes place June 22, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary, 5100 206 St. in Langley. A yellow T-shirt with the words “Donate Life” and Skura’s
signature enveloped in a heart will be worn by Skura’s family and friends at the clinic and there will be cake to celebrate the life of someone his mom calls “a beautiful young man.” Anyone living in other cities across Canada can also donate anytime in Skura’s honour, quoting the Matthew Skura Partners for Life #INME497411 and their donation will be tallied in the total. Sign’s origins in Cloverdale Research by chamber president sets the record straight Did last week’s front page photo of a giant sign pointing the way to Cloverdale give credit to the wrong set of local business boosters? The caption of photo – image SM.48OC, courtesy of the Surrey Archives – read: “Frank McKinnon and Watt Heron stand by a sign erected by the Surrey Board of Trade at Fry’s Corner (176 St. and Fraser Highway) in 1956 to encourage people to visit Cloverdale (“Cloverdale Embraces Doors Open,” The Reporter, June 12).” Brian Young, president of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, thinks so. He points out that the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1920 as the Cloverdale Board of Trade, and that the Surrey Board of Trade was formerly known as the Surrey Chamber of Commerce. “The two organizations switched names about 15 years ago,” he said. “That’s why it’s confusing.” So when he read the caption in The Reporter, he knew he had to

set the record straight. To back up his claim, he turned to Google. His search turned up minutes from an Aug. 23, 1956 Surrey council meeting that certainly seems to clear things up. A delegation from the Cloverdale Board of Trade – which in-
cluded an F. McKinnon – asked council for a variance on the setback for a directional sign at the corner of Colebrook Road and King George Highway. “They stated they had erected a similar sign on the Trans Canada Highway and the Pacific Highway
directing people to Cloverdale,” the minutes read. “They did not feel it should be 660 feet back from the highway, which is the requirement for a billboard. They claimed that theirs is a directional sign and that the council could grant permission for it to be nearer the Highway as a directional sign.” To Young, the minutes are proof that the photo shows the Cloverdale Board of Trade. “There was no Surrey Board of Trade at the time,” he said, explaining how the Cloverdale Board of Trade was very active, particularly in earlier days, when town centres were much more distinct entities. “As time has gone by, the city have grown outward,” he said. Young felt he had to set the record straight on the photo lest Cloverdale – and the Cloverdale Board of Trade – get the short shrift. “We need to celebrate the beauty of Cloverdale and the history – that’s what it’s all about.”

Love life in Cloverdale We love living in Cloverdale. There are so many reasons that this place has become our home. They include our church family, our neighbours, the schools, and today, we want to especially appreciate so many community businesses that blessed our children’s baseball teams. Children playing sports is not cheap, and there is so much they learn from their coaches and teammates that its
value is worth the effort. Recently we had a fundraiser to help the Cloverdale Spurs Bantam AAA baseball team, and so many chipped in to help us raise money. One of the things we do is a silent auction, and again, so many helped by donating meals, or signed baseballs, etc. One particular business that I want to give special attention to for
being so communityminded is the new Vera’s Burger Shack just off of 176 Street and Highway 10. The manager there expressed his desire to help, freely gave to the team, and when we were walking around bidding to be a part of the fun, and funds, we noticed that others had also successfully found this burger joint to be community

minded as well. So thank you to all who helped, especially Vera’s, and as one who loves burgers, may I encourage you to go and enjoy a great one there and know that some of what you are spending makes its way back into the community and into the lives of children. Thank you to all who helped. We love living in Cloverdale. Rob and Lori Godard Cloverdale
Promise to ban ‘Arctic’ apples The B.C. tree fruit industry is facing a critical threat because Okanagan Specialty Fruits is looking to have its genetically engineered (GE) “Arctic apple approved for planting in B.C. The organic tree fruit growers and others are opposed, as this will end the viability of growing organic apples in the Okanagan. In 2012 the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) passed a resolution asking the B.C. government to prohibit the planting of any GE plant material. The Ministry of Agriculture responded that they acknowledged the risks
to the environment and human health. They also recognized the negative impact GE contamination will have on B.C. tree fruit exports given that many countries refuse to accept GE foods. There is extensive evidence to show that genetic engineering negatively impacts the integrity of organic agriculture and has many adverse risks to human health. This technology permits the patenting of life allowing the concentration of our food supply in a few corporate hands. The use of antibiotics in the G.E. process is contributing to our increasing

resistance to antibiotics. There is ample justification for the concern of planting any GE foodstuffs in B.C. The province promised to explore the issues surrounding GE fruit and the UBCM resolution to prohibit their production in the province. With the approval of the “Arctic apple pending, I call on our government to honour this promise.  Phil Harrison On behalf of the Council of Canadians, Surrey-Langley-White Rock chapter

Neighbours still opposed to new store By Jennifer Lang A proposed 7-Eleven that stirred up controversy among residents of Cloverdale’s five corners area is go-
ing ahead after all. Work has begun on the new site, located at 168 Street and 60 Avenue. The store’s foundation has been put in, and construction is
expected to take about four months, Brad Shannon of BGS management said. The store will be about 2,800 square feet, with six parking
stalls, including one handicapped spot. There will be parking lot access from 168 Street and from 60 Avenue, where there is already a mini mall
with several shops, such as a hair salon and restaurant. The site was previously home to Cheung’s Food Market, which was torn

We’ve been a staple of the historic Cloverdale community since 1976. The earliest harness racing competitions were between ordinary farmers who had a natural curiosity about whose horse could go the fastest. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the backstretch and meet the drivers, trainers, and the horses that compete today. Watch the BC Vintage Museum antique tractor pull. Cheer on your favourite team as the Fraser Valley antique tractors and new garden tractors compete to win! Must be 19 years and older to enter the Casino and Restaurant.

Graduation is a special time for teachers and support staff. On one hand, we will miss our students and the lively interactions we had over the years. One the other, we are so excited to see them embark on the next phase of their lives as they move into the post-secondary PRINCIPAL world. I hope that they will in some Judith Henriques way share our sentiments. Some will continue with studies and others will choose to go to work. Our grads have already displayed their capacity for extraordinary academic achievement by earning thousands of dollars in academic, athletic and arts awards. Of special note are the two awards totaling $18,000 earned by students in Project Equal that resulted in $10000 to the BCSPCA and $8000 to a village in Ecuador. Our school’s strong service learning and leadership programs have prepared our graduates to carry on a spirit of community responsibility and philanthropy. My sincere hope is that the knowledge and skills acquired at Clayton Heights will serve them well into the future. I know that the Class of 2014 joins with me in expressing deep appreciation to the teachers, coaches and support staff that helped them achieve their goals. Equally, I know the entire staff at Clayton Heights, along with all your teachers from Kindergarten on, extends their heartfelt congratulations on your graduation and wish you nothing but the best in your future. Here’s to the Class of 2014!

A dream come true By Gary Ahuja Mitchell Robinson’s coach calls him “oldman Robo. The nickname stems from just how much Robinson has changed in the three years since he joined the Langley Blaze. “I nicknamed him that because he looks like a man (now), said Jamie Bodaly, the coach of the U18 Premier baseball team. “He was just this fresh-faced kid; he even sounded like a kid. Now, he could pass off as a 24-year-old or something. But Robinson, who is now six-foot-three and 200 pounds, has developed — both physically and as a player. And on June 7, the first step towards a childhood dream came true as the Cloverdale resident was selected in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft. The Miami Marlins picked Robinson in
the 22nd round of the 40-round draft. “It has been a huge goal and a dream (to get drafted), the 18-yearold said. “Getting drafted is something that motivates a lot of players. “It is a huge accomplishment and very rewarding for all the hard work I have put in. Robinson knew the Marlins were interested as he had spoken to one of their area scouts multiple times. Last year, he hit .366 with 34 RBIs in 45 games and in his first year at the Premier level, he hit .327 with 16 RBIs in 38 games. The third-baseman is hitting .321 (second on the team) with nine RBIs in 21 games. “I think I have come a long way in the past couple of years, he said. “I think I provide power in the line-up and can be a game-

his development.” Robinson said getting cut from the Canadian team two years ago wasn’t much of a surprise considering his age. Instead, he used it as a learning experience. “I was still pretty young and developing,” he admitted. “It was my first taste and I learned a little about what it was all about.” Robinson knew he had to put in the work to get bigger and stronger. “(Getting cut) drove me to work harder and get better,” he said. His work ethic is a major part of his success. “He has got great make-up, a real character kid, hard-working, real hungry and focused,” Hamilton said. “He is pretty much the whole package,” added Bodaly. “He does a lot of things right. “And he is a very humble kid, down to earth, quiet, not a rahrah type, but a leader by example. The kids look up to him.” Now comes the next chapter in Robinson’s baseball career. Robinson, who is set to graduate from Clayton Heights Secondary this month, has a fouryear scholarship offer to Florida International University. If he attends university, Robinson would be re-eligible for the draft following his junior season. Or he can turn pro and sign with the Marlins and go into the team’s farm system. He can’t make a decision until after he graduates. “I am excited with moving forward with whatever path I choose,” Robinson said. “I just love to play. No matter what happens (next), I will just go about my business and play the game.”

With You, Every Step of Your Financial Journey
Promises made, promises kept By Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Stephanie Cadieux

THE SECOND SESSION of the 40th parliament of British Columbia ran from February 11 to May 29, 2014. Early in this session, our government introduced a second consecutive balanced budget. We made a promise to British Columbians that we would keep our fiscal house in order. It requires difficult decisions, but the efforts will give us greater financial flexibility and a more vibrant economy. Business owners understand that it is simply not sustainable to spend money you don’t have. It’s a philosophy we share. Good credit is fundamental to long-term success in business, and it is important to a government that wants to ensure future economic stability. Our fiscal performance earned a Triple-A credit rating – the highest possible — by Moody’s Investor Service. This means less taxpayer money is spent on paying interest.

The economy remains our government’s focus. Over the course of the session, we outlined plans for job creations and a vision for a liquefied natural gas industry. After consulting with British Columbians, we made changes to the province’s antiquated liquor laws. The new rules are a better fit for the 21st century and will help the hospitality industry continue to grow and create jobs. One of the biggest highlights was our government’s comprehensive 10-year strategy to re-engineer B.C.’s education and apprenticeship systems, called “B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering Education and Training.” We were also successful in negotiating a settlement of the costly work disruption at Port Metro Vancouver. We are off to a good start but there is still plenty of work to do to ensure a strong economy for B.C.
