The Abbotsford-based BC Milk Marketing Board (BCMMB) will be forced to destroy all milk from Chilliwack Cattle Sales, where employees were recently surreptitiously filmed abusing cows. Saputo, the largest buyer of milk produced in British Columbia, issued a press release Monday calling for “strict reform” from dairy producers and stating they would no longer accept any milk that originates at the farm pending independent audits – this, after

more than 90,000 people signed an online petition calling for a boycott. Saputo operates a cheese plant in Abbotsford, and distributes products under the Dairyland label. The BCMMB issued a statement Tuesday saying it was “concerned” with Saputo’s decision to refuse milk from the Chilliwack dairy farm, but that it would have to cease delivery of the products to the milk processor. With no other market, the board said it would be forced to destroy the farm’s milk. Fraser Valley dairy farmer and BC Dairy

Association (BCDA) board member Jeremy Wiebe said it’s dismaying to see the milk go to waste. “As farmers, it’s painful to see animals being abused as they were,” he said. “But it also hurts to see good milk being dumped.” Wiebe said that Saputo’s decision will see “thousands of litres” of milk destroyed. An 86-year-old Chilliwack woman died and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Sumas prairie in Abbotsford on Monday at about 11:40 a.m. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said a 2013 Mazda 3 and a 1997 Chevy Lumina crashed near the intersection of Marion and Campbell roads, and the Lumina spun off the road into a water-filled ditch. He said Dairy Farmers of Canada was already developing a seven-point plan that would include regular inspections. “Farmers are OK with that because we want to be able to prove that we take care of our animals,” he said. Abbotsford’s 100-plus dairy farms ship about 142 million litres of milk annually, which is more than 21 per cent of B.C.’s total production. The latest actions follow the release of an undercover video June 8, which showed graphic evidence of animal abuse at Chilliwack Cattle Sales, Canada’s largest dairy farm. Eight employees were fired. BC SPCA said it was investigating if cruelty charges would be laid. Family spokesperson Jeff Kooyman told Black Press he was horrified by the video footage shot by Mercy for Animals Canada. The Kooymans have been working with the BC SPCA and regulatory authorities, taking steps to ensure animal safety by installing cameras throughout the farm as well as revising hiring policies and seeking new training programs for new and current staff. Saputo officials support the recommendation by the BC SPCA that the Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle, published in 2009, be adopted into provincial law.

sential services. Godden said the support staff needed to assist students will be identified and allowed to enter schools. He said the district is working with both the unions that represent the teachers and support staff to minimize any disruption. With that taken care of, Godden said it becomes a waiting game to produce report cards for younger students. “We can actually fairly comfortably issue marks for Grade 12 students and we’ll have to wait out the rest of it,” he said. Talks broke down this weekend, with both sides casting blame on the other. Locally, there seems to be some optimism. “We continue to be hopeful that parties come back to the table and will be a little closer this time than last,” Godden said. He urged both sides to return to the table and keep the disputes out of the media. “Arguing in public is time away from the bargaining table,” he said. Heidi Smit Vinois, the vice-chair of the Abbotsford District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), said parents are hoping the situation is resolved soon. “Generally, there is an impatience because a lot of lives have been affected and everyone sincerely hopes that we can create something lasting,” said Vinois, who has three children in Abbotsford schools. The DPAC has taken a neutral stance in the labour dispute. While optimism may be present in Abbotsford, the British Columbia Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) released a statement Monday that suggested that the two sides were still some ways apart. The BCPSEA said it was offering a seven per cent raise over six years, while the teachers’ union was asking for 12.6 per cent over five years. But wages may not be the largest stumbling block. The BCPSEA said the teachers’ plan would increase costs by $2 billion in the fifth year of the contract, with the majority of that due to changes in class composition requiring the hiring of more teachers.

There’s a story of love and friendship behind two pieces of colourful street art in downtown Abbotsford. The trunks of two trees at the corner of Essendene and Montrose avenues wore heavy woolen sweaters Monday thanks to a clandestine “yarn bombing.” A trendy but temporary form of street art, yarn bombing sees trees decorated with patterns of knitting that stand out among the concrete and brick that dominates city centres. But the two bombed trees in Abbotsford bear a deeper message. The trees were decorated in tribute to Birkeland Bros. Wool co-owner Karyn Waters, who is receiving treatment for cancer. Patterns were donated by members of the Abbotsford Spinners and Weavers group and by Birkeland’s Monday evening knitting group. They were then sewn onto the tree by Danielle Kingma, a Birkeland employee and the sister-in-law of Waters. “It was a group effort from all the people who care about her,” Kingma said. “It was kind of a sweet thing.”

Dear Robert: Good sauces require depth of flavour. There are many things you can add to create this, but for a tomato pasta sauce I recommend starting with a sautéed seasoned mixture of extra virgin olive oil, mire poix (celery, onions, and carrots), and lots of fresh garlic. Add the tomatoes with red wine or stock and cook down until the flavours have intensified and the sauce has thickened. Dried herbs can be added at the beginning, while fresh herbs should only be added just prior to finishing. Also, since tomatoes are acidic a couple teaspoons of sugar will help balance everything out. Before serving, make sure to taste and re-season (salt & pepper).

Today’s marketplace is saturated with almost every type of bottled or canned sauce imaginable. Homemade sauces, in many households, have taken a “back-seat” to the ready-made varieties that seem to fit into our hectic lifestyles. When we think of making sauces from scratch, many people conjure up the image of a thick gelatinous mass from one of our worst school cafeteria nightmares. However, sauces from scratch don’t have to be difficult, and can easily be the best part of a dish. Traditionally, any sauce is usually made up from one of five leading sauces or “mother sauces”. These leading sauce categories are Béchamel, Velouté, Brown, Tomato, and Hollandaise. Don’t let any fancy French names scare you. Béchamel is merely a white sauce made from adding milk to a white roux (a mixture of fat and flour that has cooked just long enough to eliminate any starchy taste). Velouté is made from adding a white stock (such as chicken, veal, or fish) to a white roux. Brown sauce is made by adding a brown stock (beef) to a brown roux (fat/flour mixture that has cooked over low heat to intensify color and taste). Tomato sauce is a mixture of tomatoes, stock and sometimes a roux, and Hollandaise is a mixture of butter and egg yolks. Although there are techniques and flavourings that also go along with creating any of these base sauces, they are basically the foundations of many corresponding sauces. For example: a cheese sauce is originated from adding cheese to a béchamel, and a hollandaise sauce with shallots, white wine vinegar, and tarragon is a béarnaise sauce. Sauce making however, is not always confined within the parameters of these leading sauces. There are many sauces that do not fall into the gamut of these five main cate-

gories. Some examples would be pan gravies, reductions, compound butters, and purees. Pan gravies are just sauces that are made from the drippings from cooked meat or poultry. Extra stock/broth and a thickener are added to extend the flavours and to coat the finished meat product. Meat that is served “au jus” (pronounced “oh zhoo”) means that it is served with its natural clear unthickened juices, however extra stock/broth is usually added to ensure there is enough to go around. Reductions are simply what their name indicates; liquids that are naturally thickened and intensified through the evaporation of water to create a sauce. Some of the best sauces result from letting naturally occurring liquids in a pan to just cook down. Simply season with salt & pepper, and serve. Many people don’t consider compound butters to be a sauce, but when melted, it is a flavourful liquid that enhances a finished dish. The most popular of all flavoured butters in the chef industry is “maitre d’hotel” butter (pronounced “may truh doh tel”). It is solid butter that is traditionally mixed with chopped parsley, lemon juice, and white pepper. It is then rolled into a cylindrical shape and stored in the refrigerator or freezer until needed. This allows one to cut off circles of the butter to melt on top of a finished product, traditionally steak. Endless creations of compound butters can be made however, for many other dishes besides steaks. Purees also, don’t conform in the definition of the five leading sauces. They acquire their thickness from the maceration of a vegetable, fruit, or an array of ingredients, like pesto for example. The Internet and library are both great resources to get ou very ey one started on creating a repertoire of sauces of your own.

Very few parents would have expected last fall that their children’s school year would be over by just the second week of June. Yet that strongly appears to be the case, as negotiations between the BC Public School Employers’ Association and the BC Teachers’ Federation collapsed after the weekend, and a fullscale strike is underway. It is unlikely now that a settlement can be reached between the two sides, which remain far apart on wages, benefits and classroom issues. BCPSEA’s latest offer includes a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year, and a series of wage increases up to May 2019 that includes “economic stability dividend” amounts depending on B.C.’s economic performance. The BCTF wants a $5,000 signing bonus followed by increases of 3.5 per cent in the first year and 1.5 per cent in each of the next three years, for a total raise of

eight per cent plus compounding, which brings it closer to 12 per cent – double what any other public service union has accepted this year. As the BCTF and some members of the public maintain, “it’s not all about money,” and in some respects, that’s true. The BCTF also wants reduction in class sizes and changes to composition, with more special needs support. The harsh reality is in the costs. The BCSPEA has calculated the current teachers’ wages and benefits demands to be worth $211 million in year five. Expanded preparation time for teachers would add another $90-million plus. And the price tag on the union’s position on class size and composition? The BCPSEA puts that at $1.67 billion – a 30-plus per cent increase on the entire B.C. annual education budget of about $5 billion. Ultimately, it does become all about the money.

Of course, the “Not In Anyone’s Back Yard” opposition will immediately launch every court and political action possible to delay or halt it. The hue and cry will be to leave the oil in the ground, protecting the environment and the air we breathe. All noble and in a way justifiable arguments. However, by following world news, it is blatantly obvious that one of the main sources (Iraq) of the oil we require to keep

the economy moving is about to dry up, or at least be cut off. To abandon the tar sands will mean Canada’s self-sufficiency in oil, to say nothing of becoming a significant revenue-producing exporter, will eventually disappear. That means as an importer, we are subject to the whims and high prices of the world market. Virtually everything we consume requires oil: fertilizer for food production, gasoline and diesel for transport, products we use and consume, clothing, home construction materials ... the list is endless. And the national and provincial revenues derived from oil-based royalties provide the funding for health care, pensions, welfare, education – you name it. Not only is oil production vital to our national well-being, Canada is a world-wide welcomed producer because we have what few other oil-producing nations have – a stable government supported by a stable population. Almost 80 per cent of the world’s oil supply is controlled by state-owned governments or national oil companies. Of the remaining 20 per cent or so accessible to the world, more than half of it rests beneath northern Alberta. In a perfect world, it would remain there.

But the world relies on production, growth and prosperity, and today and into the foreseeable future, that production requires energy to create it – energy based on oil. Not only is extraction, sale and export of Alberta tar sands of Canada’s national interest, it is in the global interest. And that is why

...production requires energy to create it – energy based on oil. our federal government will have said “yes” yesterday afternoon, despite the expectedly raucous hue and cry along with vehement protests from First Nations tribal councils. But come what may, resolutions will be found, accommodations made and in the not too distant future, the pipeline will be laid, oil will flow and revenues that support our current way of life will occur. Certainly there needs to be the best possible environmental protections in place, and certainly the pipeline route needs to be redirected to Prince Rupert rather than the

island-choked channel that ends in Kitimat. Yet, while the routing of Northern Gateway’s pipeline is mainly a northern issue, opposition to Kinder Morgan’s proposed route is mainly one of the urban Lower Mainland. I can understand that. The original line was built in the 1950s, and residential and commercial growth has been allowed to butt up against the right-of-way, making expansion difficult if not virtually impossible from Abbotsford through to the terminus in Burnaby. Why, I wonder, has not someone considered that rather than twin the existing route, Kinder Morgan use the very wide BC Hydro transmission line right-of-way for its second pipeline. It would be more than adequate, roughly follows the same routing, would not disrupt housing (at least for most of its way through the Lower Mainland) and, in Abbotsford, is immediately adjacent to the Sumas Prairie pumping station. If that’s not workable, then KM could reroute its line to cross the border at Sumas, and pump to the existing oil tanker ports adjacent to Cherry Point. B.C. would lose revenue and permanent jobs, but at least the local opponents could feel morally superior. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters Strike about more than wages The teachers are on strike, and like many, I am now scrambling to try and find care for my children. Iâ€™m a single parent. I need to work, but as a mother of a special needs child, I fully support our teachers in this strike. I see so many comments and articles talking about how the teachers are greedy and just want more money. Why is no one talking about smaller class size, composition and support for children with needs? Children who actually need support are not getting it. I am consistently told there is no funding. My youngest doesnâ€™t qualify to see a speech therapist (there are too many on the list and his problem isnâ€™t â€œthat badâ€?) but it was suggested I could hire one and pay around $100-$150 a session. Children stressed by job action I think itâ€™s more than awful what my kids are being put through with all the stress and forced to write tests and do projects which they still had time to do. Court rules in favour of Cascade picketers Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A judge has upheld the right of striking workers at Cascade Aerospace in Abbotsford to picket their employer. The B.C. Supreme Court ruling, issued on Friday, said Cascade did not provide evidence of any economic loss or additional costs related to the picketing, or that the workers – members of Unifor Local 114 – had threatened or harassed non-union employees and other people working at or using the facility. The ruling states that picketers have the right to persuade people not to enter their employer’s premises, but they must give way “to anyone who indicates a desire or

intention to enter or exit the premises.” In this case, the workers, who have formed a picket line across the Cascade Aerospace driveway, have done just that, the court documents state. “The picketers are not obstructing anyone once they indicate an intention to proceed. In conducting itself in this fashion, the union is lawfully picketing.” In its notice of civil claim, Cascade Aerospace had sought a court order to prevent unionized workers from picketing on company property. The company alleged that the workers had threatened and intimidated people attempting to cross the picket line, and their picketing had caused an estimated $50,000 in economic losses. More than 400 workers began striking

on June 4 outside the facility on Townline Road near the Abbotsford Airport. The union represents workers such as aircraft maintenance engineers, interior technicians, painters, sheet metal mechanics and others. Talks broke down between the two sides over benefits and concessions. They had been in negotiations since early February. Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor’s B.C. area director, said the crux of the dispute is equal benefits for young workers. The company has come under fire since the beginning of the strike over claims it has deployed back-up labourers to do the work of striking engineers and technicians. The company has not made any statements regarding those claims.

Nicole Bauberger visits Reach Visual artist and arts writer Nicole Bauberger from Whitehorse will paint part of her Get There From Here sequence outdoors at The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford (32388 Veterans Way) on Saturday, June 21 from noon to 3 p.m. Bauberger’s current series of plein air pieces, painted from the side of the road at 50 km intervals across Canada from Montreal to Inuvik, turns north at Portage La Prairie in Manitoba. This month she paints the southern stretch of the TransCanada drive, Portage La Prairie to Vancouver, then up to Dawson Creek, which links Abbotsford into her “map” of paintings, and where her show will be installed in the summer of 2016. Working directly out of the back of her truck, Bauberger will create a 12” x 12” oil painting based on her observations of The Reach’s parking lot on June 21. Abbotsford cop charged with fraud Officer also accused of obstructing justice An Abbotsford Police officer has been charged with fraud and obstruction of justice after the alleged improper use of extended health benefits. Const. Rob Thandi, a 20-year member of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD), was charged on Friday. APD spokesman Ian MacDonald said it is alleged that Thandi used his extended health benefits fraudulently and attempted to interfere with the investigation into the matter. MacDonald said he could not elaborate on the specifics. He said information on the matter was provided to the APD on April 22. The APD then initiated both criminal and Police Act investigations, and the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner was notified on April 25. Thandi was suspended with pay on May 23. MacDonald said the Police Act investigation is continuing. The Abbotsford Police Board will be asked to review Thandi’s suspension and determine whether his pay will continue or be discontinued. Under the Police Act, officers can face disciplinary action, separate from the outcome of the criminal charges, such as dismissal or demotion.

Habitat for Humanity Upper Fraser Valley turned over the keys on Saturday to a new home for a local family. The house at 34608 Farmer Rd. was presented to the Fonseca family, who were selected for the residence a year ago from several applicants. Single mom Jocelyn now lives in the twostorey house with her two sons, ages 11 and 12. Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with selected families, who pay an interest-free loan and never pay more than 30 per cent of their total family income for their housing. They also provide more than 500 “sweat equity” hours in building the home. The local Habitat for Humanity paid for the Farmer Road property, and the home was built with about $80,000 worth of donated materials, $40,000 in cash donations, and more than 2,800 hours of donated labour from 65 to 75 volunteers. Much of the funds came from proceeds of the ReStore – located at 34220 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford – which sells new and used building supplies, home decor and furniture. The Abbotsford Arts Council presents its first Anonymous Art Show Fundraiser at the Kariton Art Gallery (2387 Ware St.) from June 27 to July 22. The opening reception will be Saturday, June 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Anonymous Art Show Fundraiser showcases art that was submitted anonymously by community members of all ages, from first-time artists to established artists, to be featured and sold in a lightly juried exhibition in support of the arts. Modelled on an event in North Vancouver by the North Vancouver Arts Council, the show raises funds to assist the Abbotsford Arts Council in funding programs, including free community events, exhibition space and arts initiatives. Each piece in the show is on a 12” x 12” x 1.5” canvas and will be sold at $100. The artist receives half the proceeds, and the other half goes to the Abbotsford Arts Council. The Abbotsford Arts Council will announce each participating artist on

Abbotsford students return after more than six decades On Tuesday, June 10, the Mennonite Educational Institute of Abbotsford graduating class of 1951 had a class reunion. John H. Redekop, who was in the class, said that as far as anyone can recall, this celebration – held 63 years after the actual graduation

– is the most senior reunion ever held at MEI and perhaps at any other local high school. Redekop said that the original class consisted of 28 students. Of these, eight have died, two could not be located and two were too ill to attend. The remaining eight

teachers of that class (pictured below). The class was only the third class to take all five years of high

school, Grades 9 to 13, at the Mennonite Educational Institute which had been established in 1944.

Thousands of stickleback fish recently washed up in a pond at Willband Creek Park.

Thousands of small fish in a large detention pond in Willband Creek Park in Abbotsford have been found dead, for the second consecutive year, and the cause is proving to be

a mystery for fisheries officials. The three-spined stickleback – about the size of a sardine – washed up along the shoreline of the pond in the park located at Highway 11 and Bateman Road. The deaths occurred at the same time –

mid-May to early June – that they did in 2013. Following last year’s reports of the dead fish, ministry of environment officials ruled out obvious possibilities such as contamination. Further testing of the water temperature, pH levels, con-

ductivity and dissolved oxygen determined that none of those issues was connected to the deaths. The incident was declared a mystery and chalked up to a one-time incident. But this year’s reoccurrence has re-ignited the mystery. Doug Gosling, a member of the Stoney Creek Salmon Stalkers who was involved in pushing for answers in last year’s incident, was initially concerned that a contaminant was responsible for the deaths. But an advisor with Fisheries and Oceans Canada tested the fish and ruled out any toxic sources, saying the only species dying in the pond are the stickleback, while other fish and wildlife are unaffected. As in 2013, further testing did not reveal any other sources for the large kill. However, officials might be getting closer to an answer. Similar stickleback deaths occurred in Washington State in June 2013, when the fish were washing up on Mercer Island beaches. Fisheries experts there believed the deaths were part of a natural cycle in which the sticklebacks spawn annually and then die off, leaving a mass of dead fish that wash up on the shore. But fisheries officials doing research on this year’s stickleback deaths in Abbotsford have not been able to find any information that a mass natural die-off is part of their cycle. They are continuing to look into the issue.

A new music album featuring Fraser Valley talent is titled Old Clayburn.

Songs offer insight into local music From old favourites to fresh voices, a new compilation album hopes to provide a crash course in the Fraser Valley music scene. With 31 songs from as many bands, the free online album provides a look at the evolution of local music sounds. Titled Old Clayburn after a turn-of-thecentury brick factory in Abbotsford, the compilation was assembled by Adam Roper, who hosts the Birds of Canada radio show on CIVL. Roper drew from flash-in-the-pans, established artists, emerging acts and older, obscure bands. While Old Clayburn includes songs from well-known acts like Oh No! Yoko, Jordan Klassen and now-defunct Fun 100, the album also looks forward, featuring tracks by Casinos, a newer Abbotsford band building a reputation for their live shows, and “experimental folk” singer Trevor Blaak. Asked to single out another artist, Roper said the Fraser Valley music scene owes a particular debt to Old Mare, which has a track on the CD. “Few artists from the area have been able to articulate the cultural value and history in their songwriting as well,” Roper said. But Old Mare’s impact went beyond that, with members organizing showcases for many of Abbotsford’s best music exports. Now that the challenge is ending, he said that he wants to move away from keeping food in the freezer and stick to eating fresh. â€œI just want to keep on buying it fresh, whether itâ€™s meat or produce â€“ thatâ€™s something Iâ€™ve taken away from this.â€? Lindenlaub tried new fruits and vegetables, including spaghetti squash, golden kiwis and papaya. As a cancer survivor, Lindenlaub also wanted to focus on raising funds during the challenge. He said he was very pleased with the generosity of the Abbotsford community and raised more than $1,000.

The FIFA World Cup, currently underway in Brazil, has captured the imagination of soccer aficionados the world over, and Sophie Schmidt is no exception. But while the 25-year-old midfielder from Abbotsford has her rooting interests in the men’s tournament – she’s partial to Germany and the Netherlands – the event that’s occupying her thoughts to an increasing degree these days is the FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be hosted by Canada in 2015. On June 6, one-year countdown clocks were unveiled in the six host cities – Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. And tonight, Schmidt and her FIFA No. 7-ranked Team Canada mates give local fans a taste of what’s to come as they take on No. 2 Germany in a friendly at BC Place in Vancouver (7 p.m. start, televised live on Sportsnet One). “It’s kind of a relief that it’s coming up so quickly – we’ve been talking about it for so long,” Schmidt told The News on Tuesday, looking ahead to the 2015 Women’s World Cup. “I think it starts with a good performance against Germany. . . . One (priority) is just getting a result in front of our home crowd, and also performing in a way that they get

excited and we can feed off their energy. We want to go out there playing with that passion and not playing with fear with the pressures of playing in front of a home crowd.” As Schmidt and her teammates begin the run-up to the Women’s World Cup, they’re mindful of the chance they have to build on their terrific showing at the 2012 London Olympics, which captured the nation’s attention. Fans rode an emotional roller-coaster with Team Canada, including a controversial 4-3 semifinal loss to the Americans and a 1-0 win over France in the bronze medal game which clinched Canada’s first Olympic medal in women’s soccer. ish. The UFV men were ranked No. 1 by the Golf Coaches Association of Canada going into the university/college tourney. But it was the Manitoba Bisons who ended up claiming the victory, with the Cascades finishing a combined 40 strokes back over the course of the four-round event. Aaron Pauls (+4) and Connor O'Dell (+6) were the top UFV performers, tying for seventh and ninth in the individual standings,

respectively. "It was a disappointment," Bertram said. "We've had a pretty good streak, and I guess you can't win them all. But we felt like we should have. We were just slow out of the gates. “If you’d taken our average performance over the last eight months, it would have probably been enough to win it.” The UFV women's team finished eighth overall on their side of the tourney, which was won by the UBC Thunderbirds, and did not make the cut for the final round.

DAWSON Emma Mae (nee Olson) March 14, 1936 ~ June 11, 2014

Emma passed away peacefully with family at her side on June 11th. Emma was born and grew up on a farm in Peardonville, lived in Newfoundland and Montreal before retiring to Saltspring Island. Emma was a potter and loved to garden and cook. She will be much missed. Survived by her loving husband Bill, daughter Cathy (Gary), son Bill (Lori), grandsons Alex and Jack. Also survived by her sisters Eda, Freda (Joe), Grace, Alice (Larry) and brother Jim (Janet). A service for family was held on Tuesday, June 17 at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.

Ruby (nee Schartner) Ruby Hannis, born August 6, 1928, passed away at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission on June 15, 2014 after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer. She was 85. Born in Sunnyslope, AB to Dave and Marie Schartner. Predeceased by her parents and sister Evelyn Bartell. Ruby is survived by sons David (Lori) and Philip, 3 grandchildren; Elise, Evan (Courtney), Luke (Cassidy) Hannis and 3 year old great grandson Nolan. Also survived by brothers Jake (Vi), John (Corinne), Sam (Grace) and sisters Marion, June (Rod), Sylvia, Annette (John) and Lois (Jim). The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Abbotsford Regional Hospital Palliative Ward for the compassionate care given to Mom during her time there and also to the staff at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission for their excellent care as well. In lieu of flowers, the family would kindly request donations, if so desired, made to the Canadian Cancer Society or local hospice of their choice. Service to be held Friday, June 20th at 10:30 am at St. Anne’s Parish 33333 Mayfair Ave., Abbotsford.

Ken was born in Saskatchewan and passed away suddenly at his home due to a heart attack. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard (Jack) and Annie Lario; and brotherin-law, Joseph Bot. Ken was a very loyal and honest person and valued his own private time. Completely committed to his surviving son and best friend, Tyrone, his estranged wife, Valarie (Stout); half sister, Mildred (Jerry) Goetz and her 4 sons. Ken also leaves behind a brother-inlaw, Pete (Linda) Stout and their children; aunt, Frances Lario of Abbotsford, BC and aunts, Minnie Schentag and Helen Schentag of Winnipeg, MB; and numerous cousins and relatives, in BC and the prairies. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Linda Margaret Kendall, at the age of 67, on Thursday June 12, 2014 in Abbotsford. Linda fought with tremendous courage living with a stroke and then cancer. Linda will be dearly missed by all her family, extended family and the many friends that blessed and enriched her life. There was a special friendship with her grandchildren, as they truly did brighten the sparkle in her beautiful brown eyes. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on June 20, 2014 at Saint James Parish (2777 Townline Road, Abbotsford) with reception to follow. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan on December 29, 1946, Linda eventually settled in BC and on May 12th, 1985 Linda married Harold Clair Kendall. Their marriage was built on dedication, devotion, trust and respect. Their life was blessed with the love of their families and friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Cancer Society. Judy was a long time resident of Abbotsford. She worked together with her husband Victor, in his accounting practice, managing the booking department. After several years hiatus in Kelowna, they returned to Abbotsford, when Judy’s illnesses manifested. Judy was born in Kaposvar, Hungary and fled to Austria, with her then fiancé Victor. They were married there in 1946 and their first child, Christopher was born there. They immigrated to Canada and started their lives in Abbotsford. About a year later, they

It would be remiss not to acknowledge the wonderfully compassionate staff at the hospital’s palliative care unit, who made Judy’s last days so much easier for us. A private family interment will be held on June 27th, 2014 and a Celebration of Life will be held later, for family and invited friends. Catherine Mary Jocelyn (Ormsby) March 19, 1923 – June 12, 2014 Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Friend, Activist, Teacher Cathie was born in Vernon B.C. to George and Maggie Ormsby, fruit farmers of the Coldstream District. They taught their daughters that “God gave women brains for a purpose”. They surrounded them with books, ideas and active discussion, as well as, the belief that “the world of the mind, should prevail”. At 16, Cathie earned the Governor General’s Award and in 1940, she left rural life for Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In 1941 Cathie and Jim met when she was an English student and Jim was a medical student, in the Canadian Army, preparing for the battlefields of WW2. When Cathie graduated in 1943, she took a job as a censor, in Ottawa. In 1946, while Jim completed his residency at St.Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Cathie worked in a bank downtown, preparing for their marriage on June, 7, 1947. Jim got a call from Dr. Bill McLure, that the community of Mission was desperate for doctors. So, Jim and Cathie caught the bus and came to Mission, quickly accepting their new opportunity. Cathie had 4 children, in the next 8 years and her life was filled with the challenges of raising 3 boys and a girl, as well as being married to a dedicated family doctor. Devoted to the interests of her children, she provided all 4, with her energy and her endless, caring, love. Cathie balanced her life through her thirst for literature and education and volunteerism in her community. She completed her Masters degree at SFU at the age of 60 and began teaching English at Fraser Valley College and Simon Fraser University. In 1986, the collaborative efforts of several people in Mission resulted in the establishment of the Lifetime Learning Centre. Cathie co-founded this organization, which was an outlet for her passion for adult education. With Mission’s unique medical history being of obvious interest, Cathie co-authored Mission’s Living Memorials, with Betty Dandy and Betty Robertson. 2014 marks the 40th anniversary since the preservation of the old Mission Hospital building, a successful project due to the tenacity of Cathie and other activists in Mission. Travel and adventure were Jim and Cathie’s great pleasure, so they settled in to parts of the world that held their interests in history and culture. Cathie and Jim chose to remain in their beloved home of 62 years. This decision was supported by their devoted family. They had outstanding friends and neighbours who watched out for them, visited them and companioned them, on a street that had become synonymous with “the heart of Mission”. Cathie’s accolades were many, as she was a highly respected contributor to the texture and culture of Mission. A highlight of Cathie’s public life came at the age of 87, when she received an Honorary Doctorate at the University of the Fraser Valley. Cathie and Jim suffered deeply, the deaths of 2 of their children, Jim in 2001 and John, in 2008. They were survived by their much loved son, Chris. They were companioned and cared for by their granddaughter and long time employee, Jo. They were supported and cared for, by their loving daughter, Libby, son in law, Ron and their children, Caitlin (Imraan) and Corey (Andrea). On April 4th, Jim died, with his adoring family at his side and Cathie, holding his hand. Just the day before his death, he said to Cathie, “Don’t be long”. For Cathie, living became an effort, with a heaviness of heart that would not allow her to continue beyond the 70 days after Jim’s death. Family and friends created a safe and caring environment, in her old home, but we knew she would soon follow the love of her life. Two weeks in the hospital allowed time for the final gifts from this remarkable woman. Cathie died on June 12, 2014. Special thanks to Stacey and Ann, from NurseNextDoor. Thanks to the paramedics and to the staff of the Abbotsford Hospital Emergency for their attentiveness to 2 very aged people, in dire need of care. To the Ace Unit and the Cheam 3 Ward we extend our deep gratitude for your meticulous medical attention. To Dr. Manreet Gill, you paid attention, you listened and you advocated -our heartfelt thanks to you. To Dr. Mike Newton, you will not be forgotten for your gentle and philosophical approach to both, Jim’s and Cathie’s end of life needs. There will be a gathering in honour of Cathie Marcellus, held on Sunday June 22, at the Best Western Hotel in Mission, from 2-4. Donations, in Cathie’s name, may be made to the Lifetime Learning Centre, in Mission.
