Notice to Exhibitors PLEASE NOTE: Registration for Exhibits is Wednesday, August 13, 2014 - 12 noon - 8pm. GENERAL RULES to ALL EXHIBITORS: 1. Exhibitors agree to abide by the rules and regulations set out herein. Failure to comply will render the Exhibitor liable to being barred from exhibiting this year and subsequent years, at the discretion of the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society Executive. 2. Any Exhibitor under the influence of liquor and/or drugs will be excused from the Exhibition. 3. Exhibits are left at the owner’s risk. Reasonable care will be given to exhibits, however, the Directors, Chairpersons and Nechako Valley Exhibition Society are not responsible for the loss or damage of any exhibits. 4. Each Exhibitor must make out a separate entry form for each Division they enter (see individual Divisions for appropriate entry forms). 5. Where there are insufficient entries in each of several classes, the Chairperson and Judge reserve the right to consolidate such classes. 6. Animals with infectious diseases may be asked to withdraw on the advice of a veterinarian. 7. Absolutely NO horses are to be ridden outside competition areas or designated riding areas. All horses and livestock are to be lead between stables/pens to competition areas and/or trailers by the Exhibitor. 8. Should any question arise not provided for in the General Rules, the decision of the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society Executive is FINAL. 9. Exhibits MUST NOT be removed until 4:00 pm Sunday August 17, 2014. Special permission must be obtained from the Division Chairperson if earlier removal is required. At 4:00 pm, please check out with the Chairperson before removing for protection of exhibits. 10. The Nechako Valley Exhibition Society is NOT responsible for items left after 6:00 pm Sunday August 17, 2014. 11. Each Division has special rules specific to the Division, Sections and/or Classes. These rules are found within each Division. Please read these rules over carefully before making your submission. Please contact the Division Chairperson if you have any questions. 12. There will be NO vehicles permitted through back gate without a parking pass. NO EXCEPTIONS! 13. All dogs MUST be on a leash at all times. Please clean-up after your dog. Dogi-pots stations around grounds! EXHIBITOR FEES: Exhibitor’s Pass: Anyone submitting an exhibit or showing livestock during the Nechako Valley Exhibition can choose to pay for an Exhibitor’s Pass in lieu of the gate entry fee. An Exhibitor’s Pass costs $10.00 and allows access to the grounds for the duration of the fair. YOU CAN ONLY PURCHASE YOUR EXHIBITOR’S PASS AT THE TIME YOU ENTER YOUR EXHIBIT, OR WHEN YOU SEND IN YOUR ENTRY FORM. Exhibitor Passes are NOT available at the gate. See your Division ‘Special Rules’ for further information. Camping: Camping is available at $20.00 for the weekend. There are no hydro hook-ups and open campfires are not allowed. Hot showers are located on site.

it’s our 48th Anniversary, and we are very excited to celebrate with you! This year we have many events and attractions at the fair. Read below to find out what to expect - and mark the dates of the fair on your calendar so you don’t miss a thing!! NVE Theme This year the theme of the fair is
‘The Year of the horse‘.
Walk the fair grounds and learn about the different aspects of agriculture and how it is linked to our surroundings and environment. Seniors’ day Friday August 15 will be Seniors’ day. Seniors to enter the fair for $6 on Friday. Teen Day - Ages 13-18 On Friday August 15 of the fair, teenagers will be able to enter the fair at a reduced price of $6. come all day, shop, eat and just hang out. We want to see teens at the fair, so come and take advantage of Teen day. Live Entertainment All weekend at the bandstand. cow Milking Booth Milk a cow at the milk booth. Fun for all ages.

How to Buy: • All 4-H market STEERS, SWINE, SHEEP, POULTRY AND RABBITS, and PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS will be on display in the 4-H Barn for the duration of the Exhibition, and are available for purchase at the AUCTION held at 7:00 pm, Saturday, August 16, 2014. • Animals are auctioned off to the highest bidder on a per pound live weight basis, e.g. $0.80/lb or $80.00 per hundred weight or by lot. The animals are weighed on Thursday, August 14, 2014. • Payment is to be made to the Vanderhoof 4-H Council and buyers must state how they will be taking the animals purchased from the Exhibition. The 4_h council has arranged for transporatation of beef, swine and sheep to an abbatoir, unless otherwise specified by the Buyer. Poultry and rabbits are the sole responsibility of the buyer. • BUYERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ANIMALS AFTER 4:00 pm SUNDAY, August 17, 2014.

All Exhibitors in this Division must be registered members in the 4-H Club, in the project entered. 2. All animals to be used by the member project for the current year. 3. All animals may be shown in one class only, except in cases where the Exhibitor wishes to enter open classes. Exhibitors entering the open classes must pay an entry fee of $1.00. 4. There is NO entry fee for achievement classes. 5. Bedding and water will be supplied. Member is responsible for feed for their animals. 6. There will be NO meal tickets given out. 7. Judges decision is final. 8. All judging will be done in DANISH SYSTEM. 9. No horns on animals, except registered females. 10. Sheep must be sheared. 11. Market animals must be castrated. 12. No weight restrictions on beef, sheep and swine. 13. Only the member showing the animal must groom the animal. 14. No liquor or drugs on the grounds. 15. All barns close at 11:00 pm. 16. No sleeping in the barns. 17. Accommodation will be provided for campers in a designated area at a fee of $20.00 per camping unit. 18. No parking trucks or vehicles in front of the barns. 19. All animals must be on the grounds by Thursday August 14, 2014 no later than 7:00 pm. 20. Entry forms must be in by July 31, 2014 at the 4-H Office, Vanderhoof. 21. JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP: Age 9 – 12 years as of December 31, 2013. 22. SENIOR SHOWMANSHIP: Age 13 – 19 years of age as of December 31, 2013. 23. Entry per unit: $15.00 (non-refundable). Entry fees and a photocopy of registration papers or proof of registration, is to accompany the entry form, (one breed per form). Entries must be received by: Friday August 1, 2014 Prizes: 1st $70.00; 2nd $50.00; 3rd $40.00; 4th $30.00 ** Every effort will be made to have prize money mailed out within 30 days of the end of the Exhibition. ** Special Rules: 1. Cattle must be in barn on Thursday, by 6pm. Cattle exhibited cannot be removed from beef area until 4:00 pm Sunday. 2. For a breed to be eligible to be shown on its own, three Exhibitors and 15 head is required. 3. To be eligible for full prize money there must be three entries in a class. Half prize money will be paid for classes of less than three entries. THIS RULE WILL BE ENFORCED. 4. Classes may be split at the discretion of the Beef Committee when the number of exhibits exceeds 13. Prize money will be paid on each split. The top two entries from each split will then qualify for a championship for the class (ribbons only). 5. ** Classes 200 & 201 - If a female with a heifer calf at foot is declared Senior Champion or Reserve Senior Champion, the heifer calf is not eligible for Class 203 Female, Calf. 6. All cattle exhibited in the registered classes must be entered in the name of the registered owner. The animal’s name, age, and registration number must be given on the entry form. 7. The said owner is to have been in possession of same animal at least one month prior to the date of entry. 8. All animals exhibited in Registered Beef Classes MUST be legibly tattooed. Clean ears so tattoos are readable. All animals must have CCIA tags. 9. The original Certificate of Registration must be produced if requested by the Committee. 10. Livestock Exhibitors WILL BE REQUIRED to place their names and addresses over their exhibits in the stock barn. Exhibitor’s promotional, advertising, and educational information is to be within their alloted stall space. General space will be allocated in the
barn for breed association and cattlemen displays. 11. All animals must be under proper control at all times. 12. All animals exhibited shall be free from contagious or infectious diseases. The Committee reserves the right to have any animal inspected by a veterinarian. The Committee may order the removal from the grounds or isolation of any animal considered by the veterinarian to be contagious or infectious. 13. All bulls over one year of age must be handled with nosering or humbug at all times. 14. All cattle stalled are to be shown or judged. No nurse cows. 15. All cattle tied in stalls must also be tied with a safety rope. 16. Exhibitor number must be worn in show ring. 17. The Chairperson in charge of the barn will allocate stall space based on entries received at deadline. 18. Exhibitors to abide by barn rules. 19. Read ‘Notice to Exhibitors’ on Page 5.

Exhibitor’s Pass: This show occurs during the Nechako Valley Exhibition and accordingly everyone admitted to the grounds will have to pay the gate fee upon entering. Upon entry to the fair ground after paying the gate fee go to the horse show office and obtain a refund if you have paid for an Exhibitor’s Pass with your horse show entry. An Exhibitor’s Pass costs $10.00 and allows access to the grounds for the duration of the fair. A day pass costs $10.00 and is payable at the gate. Refund Policy: 1. No refunds of entry fees without a signed veterinary or doctor’s certificate. 2. Exceptions will be made for horses recognized as visibly unsound or ill by the show managers. 3. Stall refunds will be made under policies 1 & 2 above, and if the stall has not been used. 4. Refunds will be mailed out ASAP after the show.
Special Rules: 1. All classes will be judged under current EC Rule Books. The show committee reserves the right to decide any point not covered by the Rule Books. Protests will be handled by the show committee at their discretion. 2. The Nechako Valley Exhibition will not be responsible for any loss, damage, or injury to persons, animals or equipment during the show. 3. The show committee reserves the right to cancel any class with an insufficient number of entries, and divide or combine classes as necessary. 4. There will be no refund of entry fees without a veterinarian certificate (see Refund Policy above). Physician’s certificates for riders will be honoured within seven days of the show closing. 5. All competitors must wear numbers in the warm-up areas as well as during the competition. 6. Horses not competing in the show are not allowed in the warm-up areas or show arenas. 7. All juniors riding on the show ground must wear an ASTM approved safety helmet with a permanently affixed harness. All competitors are encouraged to ride in appropriate head gear at all times while on the show grounds. 8. NO SMOKING allowed in the barn areas. 9. The show manager reserves the right to remove horses from unauthorized stalls. 10. All dogs must be kept on a leash. 11. Rider Ages: Junior C – riders who have not reached their 12th birthday as of Jan. 1, 2014. Junior B – riders who have reached their 12th but not their 15th birthday as of Jan. 1, 2014. Junior A – riders who have reached their 15th but not their 18th birthday as of Jan. 1, 2014. Senior – riders who have reached their 18th birthday. 12. Green Rider: Must be in their first year of showing. 13. Riders must be neatly attired. Proper dress is encouraged. 14. The show committee encourages riders to be courteous to their horses and other competitors in the barns and riding areas. 15. Please be courteous to the horse show committee and helpers. Scarecrow Competition
Have fun creating your unique scarecrow. Scarecrows will be used to decorate the Barn for the duration of the Exhibition. We hope to see lots of different ideas for making scarecrows. Everyone’s participation in this event is greatly appreciated. Categories: Ages 6 – 13 Ages 14 – Adult Entry Fee: $2.00 for both age categories. Prize: The winner of each category receives a rosette ribbon and 50% of entry fees of scarecrow competition. How to Enter: 1. Scarecrows need to be at the Small Animal Barn by 5:00 pm on Thursday August 14. 2. You can either make your scarecrow when you get there, or you can make it at home before you come. 3. The judging will take place on Thursday August 14 after all scarecrows are entered. 4. Please pick-up your scarecrows on Sunday August 17 at 4:00 pm.

1. The Exhibitor is responsible for feeding and watering their own animals. 2. The Exhibitor must supply their own feed. 3. Pulling competition entries will be accepted up to one hour before pull at the Draft Horse Office on the Exhibition Grounds. Team Pull Entry Fee: Team $35.00. To be eligible for the team pull, teams must be entered in (NEW) two classes on Saturday and two classes on Sunday, either performance, halter or fun classes. (NEW) Weigh-in: Saturday 8:00-9:00am. Anyone not weighed in at this time will not be eligible to enter pull. The Weigh-in will be conducted by the chairperson or their designate. Any other weights will not be accepted. Please Note the Weigh-in is Saturday only for the Team pull. All Teams will be weighed in. The teams will be split in half with the top being the heavy and the bottom being the light. If there is an odd number of teams the middle team will be light if it weighs less than 3400 lbs, it will be heavy if they are more than 3401 lbs. Both weight classes will pull at the same time with the lightest team pulling first & heaviest team pulling last. Separate prize money will be
Special Rules 1. It is mandatory that Exhibitors have coverage under the Horse Council of BC. 2. The date of birth will be considered to January 1st in the year the animal was foaled. 3. Classes will gather in a collecting ring ten minutes prior to their respective classes. Any Exhibitor who is not ready when his or her class is called will automatically forfeit the entry fee. 4. All foals must be exhibited in the halter. Mares may accompany foals into the ring at the discretion of the Exhibitor. 5. All animals must be tied or stalled when not being actively exhibited. No animal will be allowed to run at large on the Exhibition Grounds at any time. 6. (NEW) Any horse not sufficiently under control shall be asked to leave the ring. 7. ‘The Year of the Horse’ IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR EXHIBITORS 1. Bring your entries to the Exhibit Building on Wednesday, August 13th between 12 noon and 8:00 pm. NO entries will be accepted after 8:00 pm. 2. Exhibitors must be amateur in nature, not professional. 3. Exhibits must not show any identification of the Exhibitor, except on the entry ticket. 4. Complete one Entry Form for each Division (see exceptions below). 5. Prepare your entry papers in advance of registration. Entry Forms, entry tags and exhibitor numbers may be picked up at the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce from July 14 - August 13. 6. Exhibits may be picked up only after 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 17th. 7. Items left in the Exhibit Building after 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 17th will be taken to the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce and will be held there for pick up until September 30, 2014. After that date, all items and prize money will be come the property of the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society. 8. All canned goods must be presented in a MASON jar designed for home canning. 3. All jars must be clean and properly sealed to qualify for judging. 4. Canned goods must have been prepared within one year of the judging date. 5. DO NOT use paraffin wax to seal jams and jellies. 6. Jars must be labelled as to their contents and date. 7. Meat and low acid vegetables (i.e. – corn, peas, carrots) must be prepared using a pressure canner method. 8. Canning is judged on colour, even distribution of content, interior texture, appearance (make sure jars have clean rims), and how the jars are packed and sealed. 9. Lemony Mint Herb Tea Recipe: (for class 1429) 1) Pound 4oz. of fresh mint leaves to a pulp with a pestle and mortar or food processor. Add 1oz. of finely ground sugar. Boil 1 litre of water with 2oz. of sugar for 5 minutes. Add juice of two lemons. 2) Add the pulped herbs to the cooled syrup mixture. The herbs will be darker in colour, this is normal. Chill the mixture at least 6 hours. Strain the drink and transfer to an attractive glass jug. Garnish with a sprig of mint and serve. To preserve, transfer strained drink to quart sealers and use hot bath canning to seal.

48th Annual Nechako Valley Exhibition _____________________________________________________________________67 DIvISION 23 – STOCK DOG Stock Dog Demonstration and Trial Saturday, August 17, 2014 at 12:30 pm Indoor Arena Entry Fee: $50 per dog Prize Money: Minimum $500 added money to be paid out from 1st to 4th place. Buckle added for top open pro and top novice. The object of a Trial Course is to test the ability of a dog to manage stock properly under the differing circumstances which may be encountered in everyday farm work. Stock dogs work with their owner, responding to a number of whistles and calls, to herd stock through a course and into a pen. Vanderhoof is home to some of North America’s finest stock dog competitors. This event will feature a demonstration of how stock dogs do their job. The demonstration will be followed by a Competition. The dogs will be herding cattle supplied by Richard Martens. The dog with the most points wins. The event takes place in the indoor arena on: Saturday August 16, 2014 - 5:30 pm Sunday August 17, 2014 - 9:00 am The roping of livestock, whether to catch a stray, brand cattle, or treat sick stock is part of everyday life for a rancher and has been in practice for centuries. Today, with competitive ranch roping, riders of any skill level and age can hone their skills and compete in this sport provided that they are on a horse that has a little “cow savvy� and is responsive to signals using one hand on the rein in combination with leg and body cues. Event Rules: 1. This fun event is open to all children who weigh 40 lbs or less, and are between the ages of 3 to 7 years old. 2. All riders are required to wear helmets. 3. All riders are required to wear long pants, preferably denim jeans. 4. The event co-ordinators reserve the right to refuse a competitor if the above criteria are not met, or for any other reason that suggests the rider is not ready and willing to participate.
