While teachers and the government continue negotiating, a full scale, province-wide strike is set to start today (June 17). With two weeks left in the regular school year, the strike leaves a lot of questions. “As a precautionary measure in the event that a timely settlement is not reached by the parties, we would ask that students take all personal belongings with them at the end of the day today,” said District 69 superintendent Rollie Koop in a letter to parents Friday. After three weeks of rotating single day strikes and partial lockout, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation gave notice last week of the full strike starting Tuesday, with a “study session” Monday also cancelling classes. That left parents figuring out what to do with young students who might be starting summer holidays, but have to wait to see. “We do remain guardedly optimistic that the parties can get together at the provincial level and reach a settlement,” Koop told The NEWS before the weekend, during which the two sides where busy bargaining but didn’t have any news by Monday morning. “We just don’t want folks to be reliant on being able to access a building to get something in the interim, particularly study materials for our grade 10 to 12 students who will be writing provincial exams at the end of next week,” he said. For younger students there are a number of activities in the area, led by the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Big Adventure Camp this week during the strike. See ACTIVITIES PLANNED, page A26

An 11-year-old Coombs boy was honoured by the RCMP last night in Parksville city council chambers for helping save the life of his dad. Police said Monday that Isadore Bennett was only 10 years old on March 18 when called 911 to report his dad was having a seizure. “The dispatcher said he did an amazing job relaying information and staying calm,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. The RCMP were scheduled to make a “Presentation for Heroism” to Isa-

dore at the beginning of city council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting Monday. Council had a public hearing, committee of the whole and regular meeting scheduled last night. Among the items scheduled to be discussed: • A public hearing related to zoning changes that will allow for the development of a four-storey mixed commercial/residential condo complex on Island Highway at the corner of Lombardy Street. • Kelland Foods (Quality Foods) was scheduled to give council an up-

date on development plans for their site at 371 Alberni Highway. • The Parksville and District Historical Society is asking council for a change in its lease to allow for a summer market. • Coun. Peter Morrison was expected to introduce a motion related to economic development in the city, likely a call for the city to once again employ an economic development officer. STARTING POINT Foundation continues to help local groups More than $10,000 was presented to 11 community groups by the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation at its recent annual meeting. According to a news release issued by the foundation, the group was established in 1999 and just celebrated its 15th anniversary by continuing to honour its commitment to support area non-profit groups and to help build vibrant communities. The local organizations who received funds include: Oceanside Building Learning Together Society, the Parksville and District Historical Society, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, the Stroke Recovery Association of BC-Oceanside, Qualicum Beach Honours Society, Lighthouse Community Centre, Young Life of Qualicum Beach, Errington Preschool Parents Society, Haven Society, Errington and District Volunteer Fire Department and 893 Beaufort Squadron Air Cadets. “These grants came from the community fund which is just one of over 20 funds managed by the foundation,” stated the release. “With assets of over $2 million dollars which are invested with the Vancouver Foundation (Canada’s largest Community Foundation), the total impact of dollars returned to community organizations, individuals and educational funds is in excess of $80,000 for the year 2013. This money comes from the interest earned on the invested funds.” The foundation is run by a volunteer-based board comprised of area citizens. Grad show must go on With the continuation of the full-scale teacher’s strike an unknown factor, plans for Ballenas Secondary’s grad festivities are going ahead. Starting with the prom parade at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 28, students will assemble at Springwood Middle School and make their way across town to the Parksville Community and Conference Centre for the big party. “This is an exciting time for the graduates and the entire community is invited to come out and share in that excitement. The street closures, while only for a short while, may inconvenience some residents so the committee would like to make sure everyone is aware of the times and locations of the closures,” said Jillian Mohr, parade chair. Starting at Springwood Middle School, the

parade will travel along Despard Avenue, turn left down Moilliet Street, turn right on Jensen Avenue across the Alberni Highway to the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. With the grad party at he PCC this year, the route is a bit different, but the parade will still include more than 100 assorted vehicles and around 400 grads and their dates. The parade is expected to last about two hours. Organizers said they considered a route along Despard to Craig Street, which would cause less disruption to traffic, but they pointed out a lot fewer people would see the parade on that route, much of which is uninhabited. Both KSS and Ballenas Secondary hold their formal commencement ceremonies June 26. — NEWS staff

How would you like to live on 13 acres in Nanoose Bay, with more than 2,100 feet of waterfront? It can be yours for only $5.3 million. The acreage on Dorcas Point Road is one of most expensive properties put on the market in these parts in a long time. “It’s a bit of a trophy site,” said J-D Murray, the senior associate with Vancouver-based NAI Commercial Real Estate, the company working on behalf of a Calgary bank in this court-ordered sale. The out-of-province-based former owner allegedly defaulted on his payments. According to the 2013 assessment of the property, it was sold in 2008 for $4.8 million. The 2014 assessment on the property came in at $4.125 million,

only $265,000 of that is improvements (buildings). The annual tax bill for the property is just less than $21,000. The property abuts Moorecroft Regional park. There are two residences, one a 2,00-square-foot, three bedroom bungalow and the other a 700-square-foot cottage. There’s a pool (currently empty and full of wild growth) and the view of the Georgia Strait is stunning. Current zoning would allow for subdivision of the 12.87-acre property. “We’re marketing it as a development site, first and foremost,” said Murray. “The price, well, it’s early days — obviously there’s some wriggle room.” Court-ordered sales are not like regular real estate transactions. Once an offer is received, it goes to the court, which sets a hearing date, usually about 30 days after receiving that first offer. At the hearing, other sealed offers can be accepted by the judge. It’s up to the judge who wins the bidding war.

Details are sketchy, but a Canadian Navy spokesperson has confirmed the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier — one of the largest vessels of any kind on the seas today — will be visiting the waters around Nanoose Bay this week. Powered by two nuclear reactors, the Nimitz was first commissioned in 1975 and is named for the late U.S. navy Admiral Chester Nimitz. The aircraft carrier is more than 330 metres long (1,092 feet), weighs more than 100,000 tonnes and can travel at a speed of 31.5 knots

(58 km-h). (Source: Wikipedia). The Canadian Navy spokesperson could not confirm the exact times or location for the carrier’s movements, but he did say he expected the vessel would be in the waters around Nanoose Bay’s experimental test range some time between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. today (Tuesday). The spokesman also said the Nimitz would not overnight here, but rather travel to nearby U.S. waters and possibly return on Wednesday. — NEWS Staff

Complete with a last minute venue change, the students of PASS/Woodwinds alternate school in Parksville graduated in style last Wednesday. Sixteen of the grad class of 23 made the casual ceremony and dinner at the Parksville Com-

munity and Conference Centre where students received their dogwood diplomas, awards and scholarships and then got to hang out with their families and guests. “This school has the best staff I’ve seen in my life, I’ve never felt so welcome,” said Taylor Hall when principal Joe Panichelli invited any of the grads up who would like to talk. Hall spoke candidly of being teased at other schools and generally having a rough time and not a lot of hope for the future before he started at PASS/Woodwinds.

Reading club set up for adults

This summer, Vancouver Island Regional Library is offering a reading club for adults. According to a news release issued by VIRL the new Adult Summer Reading Club (SRC) program is designed to remind adults of the joy of leisure reading and to encourage them to model this behaviour for children in the community — especially those participating in the kid’s summer reading club. Registration for this free summer reading program starts in mid-June at participating branches. The program officially kicks off July 2 and runs until August 20. “Visit your library branch to register and pick up your reading record,” Melissa Legacy, library

manager for Qualicum Beach and Bowser, said in the release. “Keep track of your reading each week of the program for your chance to enter a draw for a prize.” For more information visit www.virl.bc.ca. Summer Ambassadors for the B.C. Used Oil Management Association and Tire Stewardship B.C. were in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area last week to promote the recycling of used oil, antifreeze, tires and various other products. Tiffany Lau and Tori Romano visited the Re-

turn-It bottle depots and various businesses involved in recycling to promote their various partner groups. The pair are one of two teams visiting hundreds of collection facilities in 130 communities throughout the province to generate awareness to keep the recyclable materials away from landfills and out of drinking water. The municipal election is still five months away, but local organizers of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Women in Local Government Program are reaching out to potential candidates. November 15 is the day voters will make their mark on ballots across B.C. and the local chapter of the FCM’s Women in Local Government Program is working now to get the best possible people to run as candidates. The first public meeting, entitled ‘So, you’re thinking of running for local government?’ was held earlier this year in Parksville. At that meeting, men and women heard from several municipal politicians the many reasons why a person might consider running in the next election. “We had a great cross section of elected officials from all over the Nanaimo Regional District who shared their experiences with attendees and fielded a broad range of questions,” said Parksville Coun. The next meeting is set for Thursday, June 26 at 6 p.m. at the Pacific Brimm Coffee Shop on Craig Street in downtown Parksville. Entitled, ‘Making the Decision,’ this informal and informative session will offer assistance to those people who have been considering the election and now would like some guidance in actually making the decision. Powell-Davidson said that many people will want to take the summer to consider whether or not this is a fit for them. This next meeting will provide them with some important factors to consider as they look to make that decision, she said. Subsequent meetings of the local group will include Campaign Schools where those who have made the decision to run will be able to obtain guidance in running their campaigns. There are two Campaign Schools planned: July 3 and Sept. 10. Beautiful game

orgive the beer-commerical-slogan feel of this comment, but we are all Canadians. And, unless you are of First Nations ancestry, we are all immigrants. This is never more apparent than when the world gets together to contest the global championship of the beautiful game at the World Cup. Yes, we understand the ‘Bread Not Circuses’ argument — we agree there are infinitely more good causes for billions of dollars than a soccer tournament. But it’s here and upon us (well, in Brazil actually) and we get excited about watching Canadians connect with their roots. Two groups of people who live in our region with certain European roots, and the contrast of emotions they must have felt last week as the results began trickling in from South America, come immediately to mind. We can only imagine the elation of the Dutch, as the Oranje absolutely pasted the reigning world and European champions Spain 5-1, the most lopsided scoreline of the first round thus far. 5-1! Versus Spain! Or the anguish of the English, who lost 2-1 to longtime rival Italy in a game that was played with a pace that belied the jungle location. Our favourite result to this point was an emphatic, well-deserved 3-1 triumph by Costa Rica over heavily-favoured Uruguay. Costa Rica is one of the nations (along with the U.S., Mexico and Honduras) representing Canada’s region, CONCACAF, often viewed as a less-skilled child to the powers of Europe and South America. The games thus far have been entertaining (injury-time winner by the Swiss!), full of both skill and goals. North Americans so trained to see high scores in their sports often cite a lack of action for the reason the beautiful game hasn’t grabbed hold here like baseball, basketball, football or hockey. In Parksville Qualicum Beach, we don’t get to experience the excitement during the World Cup those in the Danforth of Toronto or Commercial Street in Vancouver get to enjoy. But it was good to see a few orange jerseys of the Netherlands on the backs of locals these past few days. It reminds us we can be proud to be Canadians and proud of our heritage at the same time. And it reminds us we are part of a global village. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters STUDENT OPINION I would like to address this letter to anyone and everyone who has been featured in the newspaper articles and sent in letters regarding the B.C. teachers’ strike. I am a Grade 8 student at Qualicum Beach Middle School. I, like every other public school student in B.C., have been affected directly by the strike. I am choosing not to speak my opinion on the strike in this letter, because I have seen what happens to other students when they have. There have been multiple letters written to The NEWS in response to the comments of Robert Filmer and the letter written by Ginny Lefeaux. Both students have different opinions, and it seems like some of the people of Oceanside have decided it is their place to respond to both of them in negative ways. I would like to remind you all that everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether you agree with it or not. When the students who are being directly affected due to the strike express their opinions, it is not your place to start arguing with them and to shove your opinion down their throats, trying to convince them that they are wrong and misguided, and that you are right. Instead of arguing with the students of B.C., support them. After all, it’s all about the kids. JENSEN KELTIE Deep Bay

WE NEED BUS SERVICE

I have read a lot lately about re-instating the rail service, which, although basically a good idea, sadly only having one track the reality is not very practical. That leaves the bus service, or at least in the area I live, the lack of any bus service. Being able to travel the Island is good for locals who may not be able to drive, or even choose not to drive, but certainly beneficial for tourists who I’m sure would like to see more than just Victoria.

However, living in Qualicum Bay, I fail to understand why this beautiful part of the Island suffers from no buses at all. The #10 comes down from Courtenay to service Buckley Bay ferry and then on to Fanny Bay where it stops. There is no service at all between Fanny Bay and Qualicum in either direction. Don’t get me started on the ludicrous decision to start the #99 service which runs from Deep Bay to Qualicum Tuesdays only. Greyhound travels this whole route but even that has been cut to one a day, which passes through at 3:20 p.m. I have used this myself on several occasions, but it obviously requires at least an overnight stay as it returns from Victoria at 7:30 a.m. Contacting Nanaimo and Courtenay transit proved futile. Nanaimo told me there was no service available (which I already knew) and Courtenay didn’t even have the common decency to reply. Surely the residents of this area deserve a little better than this crass ignorant response. Maybe with some backing from your paper and readers we might be able to get the mighty B.C. Transit to change its view and start a service the residents deserve.

I support and salute the volunteers who do this for the benefits of all. Invasive plants displace our native food producing vegetation; can cause serious health issues, as well as affect our economy and surroundings by disrupting natural ecosystems, increasing soil erosion and altering the chemistry of the soil of commercial crop lands. It unquestionably is time for multinational corporate citizens to spend funds for their own employees or pay others to do the job of removing Scotch broom and other introduced invasive species from the disturbed soils on public and private forest land partial–retention clear-cuts. It is a shame the B.C. government is all talk, no action, being more concerned about publicity and signage rather than doing something tangible to combat invasive species. RONDA MURDOCK Parksville

INVASIVE SPECIES Re: ‘Battling invasive species’ (The News, May 20) and letter by Sunshine Goldberry (The NEWS, June 3). Goldberry informed Parksville, Qualicum Beach and area residents that local bootson-the-ground volunteers have not actually received any of the funds the B.C. government recently gave out, along with announcing June 9-15 as Invasive Species Week. Taxpayer funds apparently were given to a fairly new, unknown entity, the Coastal Invasive Species Committee, to help raise our awareness. Scotch broom, one of our more prolific

Perhaps town employees Luke Sales and Tony Botelho should walk over to the town’s tennis courts and look at those benches, which are so decrepit they would not likely meet any standards, with their rotting wood. Hundreds of Ballenas Senior Secondary students as well as dignitaries attended a ribbon cutting for the re-dedication of Nicholls Park on June 4. The plot of land on Pym Street beside the high school had been neglected for many years. Thanks to the re-development of the space spearheaded by the Ballenas Civics Action Group the park is no longer an eye sore and has grass, trees, benches and tables. Lauri Gwilt the granddaughter of Len Nicholls who the park was named after said her grandfather, a former teacher would be thrilled that local students took the initiative to revitalize the park. Several seniors gathered in downtown Qualicum Beach on June 5 offering free hugs to anyone who wanted them. The group included residents from The Gardens and Qualicum Manor and for an hour they held up signs reading “Free Hugs” and then hugged it out with people who were walking by the clock tower on Memorial Avenue. The warm and fuzzy event was held to celebrate senior’s week. Some stunning works of art are hanging in a temporary gallery at Oceanside Village Resort for the Arrowsmith Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists spring juried show. Awards were handed out to several artists including first place to Barbara Ann Scott, second to Eunmi Conacher and Tom Shardlow third place. Awards of excellence were given to Patricia Carroll, Barbra McDonald and Fay St Marie. The pop-up gallery at # 101F, 1080 Resort Drive in Parksville is open until June 27. TOSH 10 artist Sheila Warren is one of the artists with a piece in the show. Inspired by the beaches surrounding Vancouver Island, Warren’s originals are a lovely addition to any room. The Nanoose Bay artist has donated a limited edition print called “Superstars” to a fundraiser for the Errington Volunteer Fire Department. The beautiful print of sea stars from Middle Beach in Tofino has been framed and ready to hang and will be raffled off during a huge yard sale Saturday, June 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fundraiser will also include a BBQ and car wash. All the money raised is being used to purchase a commercial washing machine for cleaning the firefighter turnout gear. The Fire Department is located at 960 Errington Road. Call 250-248-5601 if you would like to drop off a donation for the garage sale. An interesting spiritual evening took place on June 13 at the Nanoose Library Hall with international medium Anne Wright and psychic artist Jan Dayton. All the way from England, the women shared their gift of mediumship and healing with a group of about 50 people. Reverend Dianne Burrough of the Oceanside Spiritualist Church of Light invited the charming women for a weekend of workshops. Burrough told the crowd that Anne was her spiritual mentor back in England where she was born and raised. Since moving to the Oceanside area Dianne became ordained and now runs a Spiritualist Centre that meets two times a month at the Nanoose Library Hall. A plaque in memory of former Ballenas student Lukas Whibley was placed under one of the new trees at Nicholls Park at the corner of Pym Street and Newcastle Avenue. Lukas a former BSS student was killed in an accident last summer at Little Qualicum Falls and members of his family and relatives including his second cousin, one year old Cypress Snobelen gathered for the rededication of the park on June 4.

Gertrude Kay, a 107 year old resident at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach enjoyed some baby love from seven month old Amira Davidson during an event June 5, in downtown Qualicum Beach. Several seniors from The Gardens and Qualicum Manor many of them in wheelchairs along with their caregivers gathered at the clock tower on Memorial Avenue to offer free hugs to passersby in honour of senior’s week.

Grade one student Gabriela Conn (back) and her two year old sister Celeste love to get their faces painted. The pair enjoyed the face painting booth as well as the other fun activities at a carnival held at Parksville Elementary School on June 6. Parents, students and teachers were in high spirits for the evening even though their school is one of four in the district that is being closed for good.

Lisa Leger was part of a freaky flash mob that took place in Parksville on June 7. The third annual Zombie Walk included a procession of about 60 un-dead participants. Some of the zombies were smeared with fake blood while others had dangling limbs. Lisa chose to carry life like brains made out of cauliflower as she walked along the waterfront boardwalk and then up to Pacific Brimm on Craig Street for a zombie apocalypse social.

Nanoose Bay artist Sheila Warren submitted this piece for the spring juried show and sale. You can visit the pop-up gallery at # 101F, 1080 Resort Drive in Parksville and vote for your favourite piece until June 27. More than 30 members submitted their works for the show.

What looks good on paper not always good in practice It is an ‘investment strategy’ that has gained some notoriety in recent years. The ‘sell in May, buy in October’ strategy became popular when market watchers noticed a trend that there was a tendency for markets to go up in the early part of the year (peaking in May), fall through the summer and into the fall, then go back up again late in the year. Personally, I don’t see it as an investment ‘strategy’ as much as a way of speculating on the short-term direction of the stock market. Here is why: • It may look good on paper, but often doesn’t do so well in practice. One problem is that there are 31 days in each month (May and October). If you don’t make the right 2 decisions (the day to sell and the day to buy), the strategy will often backfire. Some investors believe they can ‘pick’ the right days. But in prac-

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving mother, sister, grandma and great grandma. Bernice is predeceased by, her husband Doug, daughter Barb and brother Ray. Mom is survived by, her son Glen (Lisa), daughter Lori Jones (Tom), sister Yvonne, brother Allan, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bernice was born in Saskatchewan but raised with her siblings in the Port Alberni Valley by her parents Albert and Jeanne Gailloux. Later she met and married Doug and had three children before moving to the Qualicum area. Although she had a full working life her favorite career was caring for the elderly at Arranglen Lodge. She continued to care for everyone around her, her entire life. Mom was a wonderful mother, grandma, and a loving person to all that knew her. She always had a kind word and a warm smile to share. Rough weekend for struggling Royals Parksville team lose four games on the weekend in double headers against Victoria and North Delta T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

It was a 0–4 weekend for the Parksville Royals as they dropped a double header at home to the Victoria Eagles on Saturday and another double-header to the North Delta Blue Jays on Sunday. Game one on Saturday was a gem... if you were a fan of the Victoria Eagles. Starter Ethan Skuja threw a no–hitter against the Royals to start the day, shutting out the Royals at bat and on the scoreboard. Andrew Evernden had the closest chance at breaking up the no–no in the bottom of the fifth inning but a diving catch by the Eagles left fielder kept it in tact. The Royals dropped the first game 12–0. The back end of the double header was closer for the Royals, wiping away the blowout loss from a few hours earlier. Evernden got the start on the hill for the Royals in game two and went the distance, giving up the game winner to the Eagles in the top of the seventh inning as the Royals dropped a close 4–3 game. had a solid game two at the plate, going 2–3 with an RBI for the Royals in a losing cause. That gives Ballance seven RBI’s on the season, good enough for third on the team behind Ethan Fox (9 RBI) and both Keller An-

derson and Andrew Evernden with 10 each. Sunday’s action saw the Royals heading to the mainland for a double dip in Delta against the Blue Jays, who they hosted last weekend.

Keller Anderson took the start in game one for the Royals and came out with the loss as the Blue Jays hammered them 8–1. Anderson went five innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.

Nanoose Bay’s Justin Dieleman had a solid game at the dish; going 2–2 for the Royals and scoring their only run of the game. The second game on Sunday was much the same with the Royals on the losing end of a 6–1 game. Nanoose Bay’s Josh Anderson started for the Royals and went four innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits to go with seven walks. Owen Kelly, Liam Janzen and Dean Leyland all had two hits on the game for the Royals while Dieleman had the only RBI in this one. “It’s tough for sure, we’re having a hard time right now,” assistant coach Bruce Biro said. “We had a hard time throwing strikes and when you don’t throw strikes, you are putting yourself behind in the game right away. We’re beating ourselves right now out there on the field and we’re going to have to find a way to break that habit.” The Royals are back home on the first day of summer (June 21) to take on the Abbotsford Cardinals (10–15) with the first pitch at noon. Sunday will see the Royals take on the White Rock Tritons at 11 a.m.

Two former Ballenas Secondary grads are gearing up for another season on the gridiron in the CFL, thanks to the CFLPA voting yes to a new deal with the league. Justin Sorenson of the Edmonton Eskimos and Carson Rockhill of the Hamilton Tiger Cats say they have been working hard through their offseason and preseason training camps and will now look to make a lasting impression before the CFL season officially kicks off June 26.

For Rockhill, the chance to play in the CFL is still within reach as he enters his second season with the Tiger Cats. Rockhill went in the 2012, second round (13th overall), to the Tiger Cats. Instead of making the jump to the CFL, Rockhill went back for his final year of eligibility at the University of Calgary. The 2013 season saw Rockhill traded to the Eskimos, only to be released in June of 2013 and re-signed with the Tiger Cats as a free agent the following month. Rockhill spent the 2013 season on the Tiger Cats practice roster and the

team re-signed him for the 2014 season. “He’s a really good developmental lineman that has a great future. He’s very athletic, he’s getting stronger,” said Tiger Cats head coach Kent Austin. As for Sorenson, the 28-year-old is heading in to his fifth season in the CFL. After being drafted by the B.C. Lions in 2008 (fifth overall), Sorenson has since spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for three seasons and signed as a free agent with the Eskimos for the 2014 season. It’s something the former Whaler is

excited about, especially after his family moved to Red Deer when he took off to South Carolina for his college career. “Every time I would come and play in Edmonton or Calgary, I would have 15 or 20 friends and family members in the stands watching,” Sorenson said about getting the chance to play in front of family. “It’s going to be something special when I run through that tunnel and they’ll be able to cheer for the home team for a change.” See LOOKING, page A30

Genesis Boxing Club is gearing up for their summer dry land training sessions and are looking to help out athletes to prepare for upcoming sports seasons. For four years, Genesis has been training the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals hockey team during the offseason. It’s been beneficial to the team in helping them prepare for training camp and to work on their footwork and hand-eye coordination. “It’s a big help for the kids and we’ve had lots of positive feedback over the years,” Genesis owner Rick Rae said. “Dry land training has been going on for a long time but it’s really been getting more and more exposure over the last few years and being able to work with these young athletes to improve their game has been real special.” Not just exclusive to hockey, Genesis has seen teams and players from other sports coming through their gym to help fine-tune their game. Whether it is football, baseball, basketball or soccer, the training program goes hand in hand with a lot of aspects to do with several sports.

Endurance training and footwork are two of the key elements that Rae said helps these athletes be able to be better prepared for their sport of choice in the upcoming season. “The things we’ve been doing when it comes to boxing training can be carried in to training for other sports right across the board,” Rae said. “All the sports you take a look at, each one of them involves using their feet and having the stamina to go the distance. Shy, quiet Qualicum girl lands roles on TV shows Mary Galloway looking for help to win make-a-movie contest LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

When actress Mary Galloway when to school in Qualicum Beach, she wasn’t the outspoken character she appears to be in her recent TV and film roles. “I was super shy and quiet and you could barely get me to talk in a group of people let alone perform in front of them,” said Galloway, who currently lives in Vancouver. Beyond a host of other projects, Galloway is currently writing the script for a dramatic feature film with actor and friend Katherine Ramdeen. Both girls recently starred in the hit TV show Supernatural. The script they’re writing is called Down Beat and the girls have entered it into the contest Let’s Make a Movie, where online votes will help them reach the top five, and a grand prize win could secure them funds to produce the film and screen it at the Cannes Film Festival. Galloway and Ramdeen will star in the film, which will surrounds the infamous Highway of

Tears where dozens of Aboriginal women have disappeared since 1969. Galloway is a member of a First Nations band herself, and said she feels its important to shed more light on the situation and continue to spread awareness. She and Ramdeen will play two young female cops who are investigating some of the cases. The two actors are also keen on writing a script with two female leads that doesn’t involve love. “They’re always out to find a boyfriend or husband or something, so we thought let’s make a shift and do something a little different.” Growing up in Qualicum Beach, Galloway was an avid dancer and loved performing on stage. But it wasn’t until she moved to Vancouver after graduation that she fell in love with acting. “I found an acting school and I thought I’d give it a try and I just loved it so much — you can’t stop me from acting now,” she laughed. Her first gig was a Worksafe B.C. commercial and before she knew it she was starring in feature films including Ancient Lights. Her first speaking role was in Supernatural, which has been screened all over the world and garnered her Twitter followers in places like Italy and Greece. See OPTIMISTIC, page B4

The Parksville Ballet School has been nurturing dance students for the past 40 years with Linda Klassen at the helm, but starting August 1 there will be new owners who intend to carry on Klassen’s legacy. Sarah DeVito and Deena Carl are taking over ownership of the school and plan to continue the dance training program that Klassen has nurtured in the community since 1973. All of the same dance programs will be offered at the studio when classes resume in the fall. but one thing that will change is the name. The studio located in Stanford Centre in Parksville will be called Innovate Dance Arts. DeVito and Carl who are both Parks-

ville Ballet School alumni have taken the skills they honed at the school to become dance instructors themselves. The pair started the Helix Dance Company five years ago in Parksville and since then they have been mentoring young dancers in contemporary, modern and jazz dance genres. DeVito has been running the jazz program at the Parksville Ballet School for 10 years and Carl has taught ballet and jazz at the school. Carl will now be the director of primary and pre-primary dancers and DeVito will be the director of the jazz and contemporary programs at Innovate Dance Arts. The two have been working hard putting together an amazing team for the 2014/2015 season and coming up with some new classes.

In 1989 The Wealthy Barber (David Chilton) told readers “to look for (mutual) funds with a long-term track record; to make sure that the team who created the success was still running the show; to emphasize consistency by looking for funds that did well in both bear and bull markets; and to stay away from fad funds, focusing instead on value-oriented, disciplined management teams.” Now that nearly 25 years have passed, let’s have a look and see how this approach has worked out. Not so well, I’m afraid.

To his credit though, he concedes this in the sequel The Wealthy Barber Returns (2011). In his words: “I’m forced to admit that funds matching those criteria over the years have collectively underperformed the market. What’s worse, some of the management teams in whom I was most confident have posted the weakest returns. It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”

Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.

It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

A variety of exotic flowers, natural materials and ingenious designs make up Art in Bloom: A Kaleidoscope of Petals and Paint at the Old School House Arts Centre. The show is put on by the Mid-Island Floral Arts Club (MIFAC) every two years as it takes an incredible of amount of work and upkeep by the members to keep the displays in their impeccable shape. Laurene Ebbett with MIFAC said besides the time to arrange the designs and set them up at TOSH, there is a lot of planning involved. “I know many of us go through a few sleepless nights,” she said. This year, Corinne James, executive director at TOSH, chose abstract art for the MIFAC members (and those affiliated with them) to

interpret. Each floral design complements the paintings for a bright and bold show which runs to June 21. Some of the flowers used were Calla lilies, orchids and birds of paradise, along with mosses, shiny metal accent pieces, hand stitched fabric and even a piece of driftwood shaped like a wolf. Ebbett said members like to put the show on despite all the work because of the creativity involved. “I think many of our members have had careers and families and this is something they do for themselves.” She said the MIFAC members also help, admire and inspire each other for the events they put on and take part in throughout the year. Other events include Milner Garden’s Art and Photography in the Garden August 9 and 10 and MIFAC will be back at TOSH for Wreaths For Charity and a Christmas Tree display in November and December. She said she’s always been proactive in finding work, constantly apply to both paying and non-paying roles for experience. Some of her most recent work includes playing a nurse in The Untold Stories of the ER airing on TLC in the fall. Galloway said she is hopeful and optimistic about winning the Let’s Make a Movie contest and

was in fourth place as of the weekend. The girls were recently featured on Breakfast Television on the recommendation from the people behind the contest. “We want to continue to foster an environment where the love of dance, music and creativity can be explored and enjoyed at every age and at every level,” stated DeVito. Dance classes from September to June and over the summer break there are dance camps run through the RDN recreation program. There will be some new programs starting in the fall including a Barre Fitness class headed by Carl. “I have become a certified Barre Fitness in-

structor. It is a new craze for fitness that has a ballet twist. It encompass all genres of dance but has a fitness component,” explained Carl. Other new programs include: Gotta Sing, Gotta Act, Gotta Dance, Acro for dancers, Conditioning Stretch and Strength and Improv movement workshops. POTTERY WORKSHOP

Local is featured in Campbell River

A local artist is hitting the ground running this summer starting with an exhibition at Impressions Gallery & Framing in Campbell River in July. Susan Schaefer is the Feature Artist at that gallery and will have about 20 acrylic paintings ranging in theme from West Coast landscapes, prairie images of elevators and old barns, floral paintings and a few New Mexico pieces. There will be a meet and greet at the gallery on Saturday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Schaefer’s exhibition runs in conjunction with the third annual Rivercity Arts Festival, held on Saturday July 26 in downtown Campbell River. Impressions Gallery & Framing is located at 990B Shoppers Row in Campbell River. In August, Schaefer moves her work to the Pearl Ellis Gallery on 1729 Comox Ave. in Comox. “Landscapes; as we see them,” runs from Aug. 19 to Sept. 7. Along with fellow artist Jill Paris Rody, Susan will be showing a vast array of acrylic landscape paintings. Local potters took a glazing workshop at the Train Station Pottery studio this weekend and the results were shiny and stunning. John Shauer taught the class, and there are many more workshops coming up at the studio, home of the Via Rail Train station in Parksville. A Kid’s Pottery class runs from Aug 4-8 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It costs $50 for the week and includes all supplies. There are also adult classes and the studio is open for birthday parties and other events. The Train Station Pottery shop is open daily and is filled with the recent works of the Arrowmsmith Potters’ Guild. This June the school year draws to a close amidst a tumult of strife and change. Following the controversy surrounding the closure of schools that sit at the heart of our communities, there are disputes, strikes and lock-outs relating to the pay and conditions of teachers. So maybe now is an appropriate moment to go back in time and take a glimpse at how it was for teachers and students at the turn of the last century … Conditions were unforgiving for teachers and students alike. The little school house that now sits as part of the village buildings at the Parksville Museum, has a story to tell. Originally the small school room was located at Craig’s Crossing as the engineer’s cabin and home of Mr. Moore, the project engineer for the E&N Railway. When the work on the railway was completed and it was no longer needed, James Craig arranged for it to be moved to his own property. Bynmarl School in Nanoose had recently closed, insufficient student numbers being an issue for the community more than a hundred years ago. James Craig had children of his own and so decided that the cabin would make an ideal school house for his own and for the Nanoose children. When the school superintendent, Mr Gordon told him this would not be possible, his son Duncan tells that he replied, “That’s what you think”. The superintendent, recognizing the strength of James Craig’s resolution is reputed to have asked him, should the plan for the school go ahead, what he would call the school. James Craig answered “I am going to name it Montrose School”. Superintendent Gordon was known to have hailed from Montrose, Prince Edward Island. Duncan said that Mr Gordon smiled and replied “You are quite a diplomat”. And so it was that the Montrose School opened in 1912. Netta Hardy was the first teacher and, as the cabin was well enough equipped, she lived in the two small rooms at the back of the schoolhouse as did her successors. Although the school was closed in 1920 when the children went on to Park School, the Montrose Schoolhouse still stands and can be seen at Parksville Museum & Archives. Depicting the school life of the early 1900s, a visit to the school is a step back in time. The room is small and heated on chilly winter days by a coal stove. There you will see the teacher’s desk and, in neat rows, the school desks. Children visiting the schoolhouse today can still look up at the chalk blackboard on the wall and above the board, recite the letters of the alphabet. The braided strap that once would sit on the teacher’s desk ready to administer discipline to errant boys and girls can be seen

On the wall inside the schoolroom hang two sets of rules, one for teachers and one for students. It is likely that today’s teachers might well take exception to some of the constraints applied to their predecessors. For instance, women teachers were expected to remain single. The rules however state that “Men teachers may have one evening each week for courting purposes or two evenings if they go to church regularly.” The rules also note that “After 10 hours in school a teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books”. In addition, rule no 7. observes that “Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls or gets shaved in a barber’s shop, will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty”. The final rule puts on record that “A teacher who

performs his labour faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of 25 cents a week in his pay, providing that the board of education approves”. In Parksville, the first school was built on land donated by Henry Gaetjen at the corner of the Alberni and what was then the Comox Highway. It opened in October 1891 and was closed just a year later, again due to lack of pupils. When it reopened again in 1893 a degree of creativity was demonstrated in ensuring there were sufficient students to meet the required quota. Whereas one of the youngest pupils was Isabelle McMillan who was just four years old, the oldest was 23 year old Joe Hirst. It is said that he used to sit on the front step of the school and smoke his pipe. The first school mistress was Miss Kate McKinnon who was paid the princely sum of $50.00 a month.
