Burnaby resident Robert Edwards is heading off to Peru at the end of the month to meet one-year-old Kareli, one of the dozen children he sponsors through World Vision Canada. He says he’s as excited to meet her as if she were his own granddaughter.

People using Bonsor Recreation Centre could soon get an expanded facility without shovels ever hitting the ground. The City of Burnaby will spend $1.3 million to renovate the busy Metrotown-area rec centre, if city council agrees. New space came available when the Bonsor 55-plus Society moved into its new seniors centre next door on Bennett Street. Polygon Development built that two-storey, 8,200-square-foot building as a community amenity next to its Chancellor at Metrotown highrise condo project at Nelson Avenue. The company gave the city the $2.7 million building in exchange for bonus density. It gave Polygon the ability to add more density than normally allowed under the site’s zoning.
