School’s out for summer Teachers’ job action escalates to full strike C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
In all likelihood, Kimberley students begin their summer holiday today. The BC Teachers Federation announced Thursday morning that they had served 72-hour strike notice and their job action was escalating to a full strike on Tuesday. Monday would be designated a study session with teachers meeting with union reps and the full strike begins on Tuesday, the union said. However, it all could be averted if a deal can be reached as negotiations between the BCTF and the British Columbia Public Schools Employers Association are set to continue through the weekend.
BCTF president Jim Iker said Thursday that the BCTF was prepared to bring a new wage proposal and bargaining package to the table. Of primary concern to many parents are senior students and writing of final exams. School District No. 6 Superintendent Paul Carriere says that provincial exams for all Grade 12 students will be prepared and administered by teachers. Last Friday BCPSEA filed an application with the Labour Relations Board to designate services required to enable secondary students to complete their school year and receive final courses as essential. The LRB has ordered teachers to have final grades for Grade 12 students ready no later than June 20, 2014. Carriere also says that graduation ceremonies in the district will go ahead without change.

Oakley: “I’m running again” Councillor becomes first to officially say he’s going for re-election C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley City Councillor Darryl Oakley says that his first term as a city councillor has been frustrating at times, but he intends to seek another because there
is work to be done and he wants to see it through. There are a few things in particular Oakley is anxious to see some action on; including the motion from Council to explore a visit from the Auditor General. “I really support that,” Oakley said. “And the Auditor General should focus on the flume. The reality is, it’s over budget. We were fortunate to get the grant. “It’s a beautiful

project. It will be a legacy. It will be wonderful. But we need to understand how to man-
age a big project.” Oakley also has concerns about the Sun Mine project. Rogers charms Cranbrook with festival of hits Barry Coulter
Kenny Rogers has the world at his feet, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. The country music great entertained 1,600 people at his Western Financial Place concert Wednesday night with a performance of five decades of hits, and he charmed them in between songs with his humorous, engaging patter. Most, but not all, of his jokes were at his own expense. As an example, two songs in, Rogers stopped the show to examine the question of why women were keen to come to his show, while their husbands had to be dragged along. Interacting with one ‘Steve’ in the front rows, Rogers parsed this question, while tossing cash to Steve, from the stage, to get the answers
he wanted. He then relaunched his concert with a revue of some of the most famous songs of recent decades. But Kenny Rogers is no jukebox. “We Got Tonight,” “Daytime Friends (And Nighttime Lovers), “Coward of the County,” “Have A Little Faith In Me,” “Through The Years,” “The Greatest,” “If You Want To Find Love” … For a 75-year-old just off knee surgery, Rogers gave fresh, inspired renditions of his body of work, backed by a tight band that’s been with him for years. He even gave a mini set of his ‘60s band, the first edition, saying it was a chance for the audience to experience an acid flashback without the acid — “Something’s Burning” and “Just Dropped In.” After fin-
ishing singing the latter song, Rogers recited a portion of its lyrics slowly, to give the post-’60s members of the audience a feel for the spirit of the ‘60s. Quite funny, really. Rogers also spoke about his great friend, Dolly Parton, and sang a song off his recent album he recorded as a duet with her — “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” Dolly’s voice on a backing track on the chorus brought her into the house. Far from being a chestnut, Rogers’ performance of perhaps his greatest hit, “The Gambler,” came across as evergreen, stark and powerful. He sang the tear-jerker “Lucille,” with his tongue in cheek, chatting and joking with the audience between verses.

He finished off his show with “Lady,” and “Islands in the Stream.” All in all, the great Kenny Rogers came and went, and it seems to be full-on summer in Cranbrook now. Opening up for Rogers was Canadian coun-

5-Peaks off to a flying start in Kimberley

The 5-Peaks Adventure Series has been around for some time across Canada, but this years marks its first foray into the Kootenays. Kimberley was one of the locations for the 5-Peaks Kootenay races this year and they were held last Saturday, June 7 at the Lois Creek Trails. The event was hosted by the Friends of Lois Creek, who provided all the volunteers required for the race. There were 38 run-
ners registered for the race, coming from Blairmore, Invermere, Kimberley, Airdrie, Calgary, Canmore, Coquitlam, Cranbrook, Fernie, New Denver, Rossland, Sorrell, Sparwood, Summerland and Windermere. Kimberley City Councillor Darryl Oakley worked the race as a volunteer and said it was a great event. “I thought it was extremely well done,” he said. “It was very professional. I heard from people who travelled from all over that they really enjoyed it. Nobody got lost, nobody got harassed by bears.” Maggie Scallion of 5-Peaks has declared it an unqualified success. “The support of Blake Rawson, Don Davies, Nina Andermatt, Daz DeBoer, the City of
Kimberley and Tourism Kimberley was invaluable. “We had a number of runners comment on how beautiful the course and trails were,” Scallion said. “Our winning couple even went so far to say that it was the most beautiful course they’d ever run, in the entire world.” “From my perspective, the weekend could not have gone better… unless we’d had a few more runners. The weather was perfect. The organization went really smoothly. We had plenty of really awesome volunteers.” 5-Peaks will definitely be back,” Scallion said. “I’m looking forward to keeping Kimberley as a staple of the Kootenay series and growing it in years to come.”

Oakley is first to announce From Page 1 “The resolution was to release information in a timely manner,” said City CAO Scott Sommerville. “It was passed May 26 and on May 29 I got an email asking why wasn’t it done. We are preparing a press release but I feel it’s premature. “We have partners that we must coordinate the press release with.” “I understand that,” Oakley replied. “I’m not trying to undermine the process of working with partners. But the press release was always in the plans. If Council did not want to release the information, then it
should have defeated the motion.” Coun. Bev Middlebrook said that as she understood it at the time, her understanding was that information would be forthcoming in three weeks. In any event, Oakley says he is concerned about the Sun Mine. “I think it’s a really funky, interesting project, but I do have concerns. I wish somebody other than the City took it on. I think we are too small a city to take it on. We need to focus on infrastructure. “The Sun Mine offers no new jobs, no new taxes from the project. They were very clear about that from
the start. It’s done. Council voted four to three to make it a go. I just want to focus on the basics. “We should be doing a lot more with infrastructure. Roads, sewage treatment; really basic stuff needs attention.” Oakley says that he hopes the City can now enter into an era of focusing on a solid infrastructure plan. “There are no more big projects in the cue. We need a full infrastructure assessment. I mean every pipe in the ground. How long will it last? What will it cost to replace? How much longer does the sewage treatment plant last and
what is the cost to replace it? How about the Civic Centre? “We need a broad look at the plans for renewal of all our infrastructure. And we need to have a look at how we approach and work with federal government and the province to get the grants to do the work. “Right now we’re doing it piecemeal and my gut feeling is it’s not sustainable. I’m not getting the information I need. “I hope we are poised to go after the dollars and get the work done. We need a clear picture of where we stand.”

Kimberley junior golfers out of the Kimberley Golf Club continue to do very well. The recent East Kootenay Zone Championships in Creston were claimed by Kimberley’s Dererniwsky sisters. Overall Low Gross Champion - Julia Dereniwsky, Kimberley Golf Club and Overall Low Net Champion Kira Dereniwsky, Kimberley Golf Club.
At their regular meeting this past Monday evening, Kimberley City Council voted to return to regular Administration and Operations meetings after a trial period of replacing them with Committee of the Whole meetings.
The motion was brought forward by Coun. Don McCormick, who had also made the motion to go to Committee of the Whole a few months ago. “I envisioned being more connected not less, but in fact the opposite has happened,” McCormick said.
Coun. Kent Goodwin was against the move saying he thought the Committee of the Whole meetings were an improvement, it’s just that not enough of them were being held. “The couple that we’ve had have worked very well as opposed to half of Council getting
some information from Operations or Admin meetings and half of Council not.” Coun. Albert Hoglund pointed out that there are some issues that are better served going through Admin or Ops rather than committee of the Whole.

Mens Mountain Classic seeks more local players C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Over 25 years ago, the Mens Mountain Classic began as a golf tournament at Jasper Park Lodge in Jasper, Alberta. In 2005, the tournament switched locations to Trickle Creek in Kimberley. Since that time, the tournament has raised over $26,000 for local organizations such as Kimberley Search and Rescue, the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank and more. The 2013 tournament contributed $2500 to the Kimberley Youth Centre and $500 to junior golf at the Kimberley Golf Club. It’s really been a great success says Bob McLean, one of the organizers. Coroner identifies accident victim KELOWNA - The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died after a motor vehicle incident near Kimberley on June 10, 2014. He is John Robert Williams, aged 45. Mr.
Williams is a resident of Guelph, Ontario, but had most recently been working in the Kimberley area. Mr. Williams was the operator of a motorcycle which was heading southbound on High-
way 95A at about 3:30 p.m. on June 10, 2014, when he lost control and left the highway about one kilometre north of the Forest Crowne Subdivision Road. Mr. Williams was
deceased at the scene. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services continue to investigate this death. Mr. Williams’s family has been notified of his death.

For the sixth year in a row, Cranbrook’s Elizabeth Lake Lodge has won a coveted TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Hotel Award. The lodge, which sits beside Elizabeth Lake on Cranbrook’s south-western edge, ranked as the ninth best hotel in Canada for Exceptional Service. “We were absolutely thrilled to get it,” said George Freitag, who owns the lodge with his wife Rachel. It was joined in the top 10 by the likes of Trump International Hotel in Toronto and the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver.
TripAdvisor is a travel website where hotel guests can rank their stay and write reviews of the accommodation. It contains reviews of about 10,000 Canadian properties. Each year, TripAdvisor looks at the hotels ranked in the top 25 positions in five categories: luxury hotels, family hotels, resorts, best bargains, and exceptional service. For three years, Elizabeth Lake Lodge was awarded in the bargain hotel category. However, a slight rate increase saw it priced out of that category. Since 2012, the Cranbrook hotel has won in the service category. “It becomes tougher to win it every year, because now you get people booking just because of our reviews. So their expectations walking in are very high,” said George. “For that reason, I’m thrilled that we got it for one more year, and it shows that we have been able to continue to up our game a
little bit.” Elizabeth Lake Lodge has 276 reviews on TripAdvisor. Of those, 250 ranked the lodge as excellent with 5 stars, 21 ranked it as very good with 4 stars, 4 ranked it as average with 3 stars, and only one of the 276 gave it a poor review with one star. None of the reviews failed to give the lodge any stars. In the six categories, the lodge has five stars for five out of six: sleep quality, rooms, service, value and cleanliness. In the remaining category, location, it has four and a half stars. Although the reviews from guests are overwhelmingly positive, George is humble about the ranking. “I try and let people know that it’s not saying we are the absolute best property. These are properties that have exceeded expectations for what they have paid and what they have come for; these properties have delivered more than what they were expecting.”

Again this year, the Marysville Business Men’s Club has entered into an agreement with the Wayne Drive-in Theatre to present two first class movies with Marysville churches to benefit from the proceeds. The first of these special events is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday when the picture to be shown is “Mandy”, a tender story of devotion and love in helping a child handicapped by deafness to find her place in the world. Starring are Jack Hawkins and Phyllis Calvert, who give moving performances as the parents who can only trust in faith to give Mandy her chance in life. During the following week, on June 29 and 30, the Business men’s Club will share with the Wayne Drive-In in presenting Penny princess, a gay and lovable story that has captured the hearts of millions. Starring Yolanda Donlan and Dirk Bogarde, this entrancing romance tells the story of a winsome lass who inherits, of all things, a kingdom. What befalls her as she tries to govern the bankrupt little country makes for a pleasant evening of fun and merriment. The churches to benefit by this unique arrangement are the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, whose two evenings are next Monday and Tuesday, and the Laura Keer Memorial Church, whose members are looking forward to the presentation of “Penny Princess”. Theatre fans will have the added pleasure of meeting the enterprising members of the Marysville Business men’s Club who will, for these four evenings, become movie theatre empresarios.
Marysville Fire Department Has Busy Week

of inactivity, the Marysville Fire Department was called into action twice within a few days. The first completely destroyed the concession booth at the Wayne Drive-In, which was being run by the Marysville Branch of the Canadian Legion Auxiliary. On Wednesday evening last the fire truck and eight men, with Fire Chief T.L. Leighton, were again called out when fire broke out at the Pringle residence on Turner Avenue. Mr. And mrs. Pringle were away at the time, at Monarch, Alberta. Cause of the fire is not definitely known, but it is felt that a smouldering cigarette butt in a chesterfield chair was the culprit, the fire chief feeling that it had probably smouldered during the 36 hours which had elapsed from the time the Pringles left. The big chair, the bathroom and attic were completely gutted, and some water damage and blistering of furniture occurred. The fire department fought the flames with the fog system, backed up with a hydrant line.

Marysville legion and Auxiliary members had an emergency meeting after the fire at the booth at the DriveIn last week, and decided to carry on in spite of the fire. One of the Marysville Day booths was hauled to the Drive-in and renovated, and the members were open for business at Saturday night’s show.

Trail to connect Cranbrook and Wardner Work has begun on the first phase of an extension of the Trans Canada Trail in the East Kootenay Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Work has begun on a new section of the Trans Canada Trail between Cranbrook and Wardner. The crushed gravel surfaced trail will follow the Isadore Canyon trail to Mayook, then continue along an abandoned rail corridor to Wardner Provincial Park beside the Kootenay River, with a bypass around private land in Mayook. A connector trail will link the Cranbrook to Wardner trail with the rest stop on Highway 3 in Mayook known as the Ramparts Lake rest area. The project is being led by trail enthusiasts in the community, said Al Skucas, a Cranbrook-based Trails BC director. “It’s a grassroots movement. With this kind of major project, there is normally some level of government handling this. But this is grassroots and it’s important to engage volunteers and community partners.” A special committee of Cranbrook, Kimberley, Wardner and Mayook residents is working on developing the trail. With funding from Trans Canada Trail, a feasibility study has

Columbia Basin Trust is contributing to the project through the Community Initiatives program. The Trans Canada Trail Foundation will provide significant funding, but that depends on a higher level of community support. “Although we have not reached this year’s goal of $90,000 of matching funding, we are hoping with the support of our local communities and support groups that those additional funds can be raised,” said Skucas. A team of volunteers
from the Kootenay Orienteering Club began the first work on the Cranbrook to Wardner trail last week. On Wednesday, June 4, the trail enthusiasts walked the trail from the Isadore Canyon trailhead to Pritchard Road, placing flags along the trail’s route. “It’s an important first step to evaluate the whole project,” said Skucas. The trail has been broken down into three phases over three years. In phase one, which is set to take shape this year, the rail grade on Crown land will be improved and resurfaced from Cranbrook’s north-eastern edge to Pritchard Road. The connector trail to Ramparts Lake rest stop will also be built.
2013 ANNUAL REPORT The City of Cranbrook 2013 Annual Report will be presented to Council for consideration at the Special Meeting on June 23, 2014 at 3:00pm in the City Hall Council Chambers. The 2013 Annual Report will be available for public review on the City website www.cranbrook.ca or can be picked up after 1:00pm on June 6, 2014 at the reception desk at City Hall. This notice is published in accordance with Section 99 of the Community Charter.
In phase two, the rail grade from Ha Ha Creek Road to Wardner will be resurfaced. Phase three, in 2016, will see the Mayook bypass completed and final completion of the trail. Once the Cranbrook to Wardner trail is complete, and the Rotary Way connector from the
strip to the North Star Rails to Trails at McPhee Road is also complete, it will be possible to travel 70 kilometres from Kimberley to Cranbrook along the Rails to Trails, connect past the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, and onto the Cranbrook to Wardner trail to the Kootenay River.

zine. This particular translation was copied from a previous unknown and unpublished French translation. Although interest in Franklin remains high, nothing more is published until 1818, when a London firm releases the three-volume ‘Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin.’ Hopes were high for this one, as this set not only contained parts one, two and three of Franklin’s work, but it had been printed from Franklin’s own original manuscript, purchased from his grandson and heir. These hopes were quickly dashed, though, as it turned out Franklin’s grandson had provided only a copy of the original, and only after he had altered much of the text to suit his own personal whims. A good 40 years goes by until an American lawyer named John Bigelow enters the story. Realizing Franklin’s autobiography only exists in unfinished, unauthorized, badly translated, purposely altered, inaccurate and incomplete editions, he begins to assemble as many original manuscripts he can find. Finally, in 1868, Bigelow releases ‘The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin,’ which not only includes all four parts but Franklin’s original outline as well. The ‘Golden Summer’ 100 years ago What’s Up? JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

h yes, “The Golden Summer” — those dwindling days of 1914 before the Great War graced the globe with its ever-lasting litany of death and destruction. Summer, to be sure, but as for “Golden” well, not so much. The first week of June brought news of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River following a collision with another ship at a cost of 1,012 lives, including an estimated 28 Kootenay/Boundary residents. Closer to home was the horrific death of young Flora Woods, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Woods, residents of the second floor of the former East Kootenay Butcher Co. on 9th Avenue. Flora, age four, was playing in the alley with several children when she appeared to step on a match which ignited her shoelaces, fanning onto her clothing as she ran. She was a mass of flames when she was caught by Mr. Carson at the next street. He burned himself badly trying to save her but to no avail. She died a few hours later. Despite its tragic start, it was a typical summer in many ways; a time of baseball, tennis and especially lacrosse, which drew crowds to the newly leveled field now covered by Mount Baker School. The city brass band played regular concerts at the bandstand near the old courthouse (the Cranbrook Mall parking lot) and June lawn socials were regular occurrences consistently accompanied, it seemed, by bad weather which cut short the activities. Vaudeville continued to be a big draw at the old Auditorium with miniature elephants, trained chimpanzees, Italian accordion quartets, hoop rollers and numerous other novelties. Next door the Rex Theatre (now Muriel and Jane’s General Store) featured one and two-reelers of the day. As a stormy June gave way to what would become a hot, dry summer, the city came under enforced water restrictions. Cranbrook was in dire need of a proper waterworks system and a bylaw was duly passed to allow the borrowing of $110,000 — a very large sum of money at the time — to allow the work to proceed. The Retail Merchants Association approached city council requesting that white help be given preference when hiring laborers for waterworks construction in order to aid numerous families in “destitute circumstances” unable to find

The Balkans gave us women’s fashion and World War One. – Herald, Aug. 1914 work. Mayor Simon Taylor voiced the council’s sympathy and agreed to consider the appeal. The middle of June brought tragic news from the Crowsnest Pass: an explosion in the Hillcrest coal mine near Blairmore, Alberta, took the lives of 189 men, many of whom were known to the people of Cranbrook. It remains the worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history. On July 2, a short article appeared on page five of the local newspaper reporting the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir apparent to the Austrian throne. It was to be the catalyst that would lead to
the war in Europe one month later although few in Cranbrook would have recognized it as such at the time. Della Drummond was elected to represent Cranbrook at the annual Nelson Chahko Mika carnival, 200 boys competed in the Cranbrook Farmer’s Institute potato-growing contest, 12th Avenue was graded and opened to automobile traffic, the first Kootenay Orchards school prepared to open in the fall and merchants enjoyed their new Wednesday half-day holiday. Beatrice Greaves — a longtime resident — unaccountably screamed, threw up her hands and collapsed on the corner of 9th Av-
enue and 1st Sreet, dying soon thereafter. Malcolm Ferguson was struck on the head and killed by a falling tree while out walking near Bull River and Evelyn Barr, age three, died from burns while playing with matches on her family’s farm outside of town. In late July a series of purported gold strikes on Perry Creek, Hospital Creek (near the old St. Eugene Hospital) and St. Mary’s Creek between the Mission and Wycliffe brought would-be prospectors out in droves. No-one got rich. The economy was down and lumber sales slow but real estate was still moving as numerous houses changed hands. A chicken ranch on Baker Hill — four fenced lots, threeroomed cottage, wellequipped 75 x 15 foot chicken house with water on the property – sold for $1,000. Canada entered the war on August 4 and Cranbrook quickly stepped up to the plate. An East Kootenay contingent was raised and immediately attracted young males eager to enlist. The entire city stood draped in bunting of red, white and blue to compliment the emergence of Union Jack flags. An Empire War Fund-Raising Meeting took place at the Rex Theatre on Aug. 17, replete with speeches and songs honouring the volunteers. Shortly thereafter the newly inducted young soldiers were paraded from Baker Street to the lawns of the Baker Home (now mostly a senior housing complex) led by the city band and the Boy Scouts. The evening celebration featured coloured electric lights, a large dancing pavilion, refreshments booths, a fish pond, fortune telling, a shooting gallery and a large bonfire, all looking “truly tropical and romantic under the moonlight.” Eleven days later, over 2,500 people turned out at the railway station to bid good-bye to the troops. The water works project was cancelled due to financial exigencies, the Fall Fair was cancelled out of respect and the Golden Summer was forever cancelled by the Guns of Autumn. Janus now ends its sixth season for the, as yet, unlabeled summer. MONTREAL - Gatineau Olympiques head coach Benoit Groulx will lead Canada in its quest to end its gold medal drought at the 2015 world junior hockey Championship. The Hull, Que., native will serve as head coach for Canada’s national junior team during the 11-day tournament held in Montreal and Toronto at the end of this year. Groulx, 46, was also an assistant coach at the 2014 junior championship, where Canada lost in the semifinals. “We need guys who are self-driven, who are relentless, guys who want to make the difference,” Groulx said following Hockey Canada’s announcement from Montreal on Thursday. “We need hundred-point players who are ready to make changes, ready to play out of their comfort zones. To win that championship, you
need world-class players.” Over the next two weeks, Groulx will begin naming players to his roster. Canada opens the tournament on Dec. 26 with a group game against Slovakia in Montreal. The gold medal game goes Jan. 5 in Toronto. Canada is suffering through a five-year gold medal drought at the tournament after winning five consecutive years between 2005 and 2009. This time around, Groulx is happy to be playing in front of the home crowd. “Pressure will be good for us,” he said. “When’s there’s pressure like that, people are very aware of it. Playing in Montreal and Toronto forces us to prepare adequately. “People in Canada expect us to win. For us, that’s the ultimate. But our focus is on the process more than anything else.”

TORONTO - The CFL Players’ Association has voted to accept a new collective bargaining agreement with the league. The union said in a statement Thursday night that its players voted to accept the fiveyear contract reached Saturday with the CFL. “It’s a YES!” offensive lineman Peter Dyakowski, a player rep with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, tweeted. “We’ve got a new CBA!” The CFL’s board of governors is scheduled to vote on the deal Friday and the expectation is they’ll accept it. The CFLPA didn’t provide a breakdown of the votes but a majority of players - 50 per cent plus one - on six of the nine CFL teams was required for the deal to be accepted. The players voted in
favour despite many expressing their unhappiness publicly and on social media about the deal. It offers a $5-million salary cap in the first year of the agreement after the CFLPA had originally sought a $6.24-million cap. Last year, the CFL’s salary cap was $4.4 million. The CFL also got the players to agree to its gross revenue formula that would trigger the renegotiation of the cap or entire collective agreement. The players, who initially wanted the CBA to include revenue sharing, wanted the cap or entire agreement renegotiated if league revenues increased by more than $18 million - excluding the Grey Cup in the third year of the deal. But the union ultimately agreed to the CFL’s figure of $27 million.

Barbarians remain undefeated Kimberley derby squad beats Invermere to climb to the top of league standings

Somebody crown the Bavarian Barbarians, because they now reign on top of the East Kootenay Roller Derby League standings. The Kimberley squad edged out a close 157-145 win against the Invermere Killer Rollbots to lay claim to the top spot in the league. Following the bout, the hosts—the Elkford Wildcat Brawlers—took on the Rocky View Bruise Battalion and fell by a score of 183-146. “Going into it, we’ve never beaten the Invermere team before, but we knew that we had a good chance to put up a good fight, just based on how far our team has come since the first season,” said Nicole Kapell, who skates as Indiana Bones Crusher. Kimberley will be automatically in the championship bout for the league’s final event of the season in July, where they will face either Invermere or Elkford. “We’re pretty excited, we get to go into the final in first place,” said Kapell. “We’ll be playing the headlining game at 8 p.m. here in Kimberley, so hometown ad-

The Barbarians were able to regroup after a
couple timeouts and at the half and eventually figured out a counter strategy. While the Barbarians reacted to the Rollbots, they were also running a tactic of their own. The Kimberley team had a roster of 11 players, while Invermere only had seven. “By the second half, they were getting pretty tired,” said Kapell. “One
of our strategies was to play a long game so that our shifts were longer to try and tire them out, give them less time to sit on the bench.” The game opened up in the second half, as the two teams traded leads all the way up till the final countdown. “We kind of went back and forth, all the way until the very end, and at the end we just
decided to pull out all the stops and played most of our veterans for the last couple of jams straight, just to kind of make that extra push,” added Kapell. “The last jam we got a power jam, meaning their jammer went into the penalty box, so that helped us get a couple of extra points just to kind of get the win at the end.”

The Western Hockey League playoff format has changed following the league’s annual general meeting in Vancouver this week. Taking their cue from the NHL, the WHL has approved the same playoff format— which was introduced this past season—and will run for three years starting in the 2014-15 campaign. While the previous format pitted the first-place team against the eighth-place team system in both conferences, the new system rewards strong teams divisonally. “The Board of Governors felt that the new NHL format was the best of both worlds, kind of a hybrid between the division and the conference,” said Jeff Chynoweth, president and general manager for the Kootenay Ice.
“The Board of Governors felt that the new NHL format was the best of both worlds, kind of a hybrid between the division and the conference.” Jeff Chynoweth WHL commissioner Ron Robison echoed the same sentiment in a press release. “We believe the new format is a hybrid of the WHL’s previous conference and divisional formats,” said Robison. “This will allow us to feature our regional rivalries in the playoffs and offer the most fair and competitive path to the WHL championship.” The top three teams in each division make up the first 12
teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed teams in each Conference, based on their regular-season record and regardless of division. It is possible for one division in each conference to send five teams to the postseason while the other division sends just three. In the first round, the division winner with the best record in each conference will be matched against the wildcard team with the lesser record; the wild card team with the better record will play the other division winner. The teams finishing second and third in each division will meet in the first round within the bracket headed by their respective division winners. First-round winners within each bracket play one another in the second round to determine the four participants in
the conference finals. Home-ice advantage through the first two rounds goes to the team that placed higher in the regular-season standings. In the conference final and WHL championship series, home-ice advantage goes to the team that had the better regular-season record regardless of the teams’ final standing in their respective divisions. Chynoweth added that he is a fan of the new NHL playoff system. “The format in the NHL has worked really well,” said Chynoweth. “I think it’s created a lot of interest for hockey fans throughout the league and I think it can do the same for the Western Hockey League. “We’ve got some great rivalries in our league as well, and I think it will only enhance those rivalries.”

SAO PAULO, Brazil Neymar gave Brazil a winning start to its home World Cup, scoring twice to lead the host nation to an unconvincing 3-1 victory over Croatia in the opening game on Thursday. Brazil had a disastrous start when defender Marcelo found his own net while trying to clear a low cross by Ivica Olic in the 11th minute, but Neymar then showed why the nation’s high hopes are all pinned on him. The 22-year-old forward equalized in the 29th minute, clearing a defender in midfield before making a run toward the edge of the area and firing a perfectly placed low shot that went in off the post. The game turned on a controversial penalty awarded by Japanese
referee Yuichi Nishimura in the 71st minute when striker Fred went down inside the area under minimal contact from defender Dejan Lovren. Neymar scored from the spot and the Croatians were furious. “If that was a penalty, we should be playing basketball,” said Croatia coach Niko Kovac. “Those kinds of fouls are penalized there.” “That is shameful, this is not a World Cup referee. He had one kind of criteria for them and another for us. The rules were not the same,” said Kovac. As Croatia searched desperately for an equalizer, Oscar added to the lead in the first minute of injury time with a toe poke from just outside the penalty area. CHICAGO — The perfect pothole might not exist for many people — but for mosaic artist Jim Bachor, it’s one with a nice oval shape. Bachor began filling those potholes a little more than a year ago, after one in front of his house became a hassle. Bachor doesn’t just fill them with cement, though. He’s turned pothole-filling into a public art project — one with a sense of humour. He fills them with mosaics. “I just think it’s fun to add that ASSOCIATED PRESS
little bit of spark into (an) issue that people moan about,” says the Chicago resident, whose work also hangs in galleries. He was first drawn to the ancient art form because of its ability to last. With orange cones and vests displaying his last name, Bachor and his helpers look official enough to shut down a street section to work on filling a pothole. He says Bachor and his crew are welcome anytime to fill potholes in his city, one of many hit with an especially large number of the annoying craters after a hard winter. “I’ll pave the way for them,” Shaheen said with smirk. “No pun intended.”

Honouring those who serve
E
arlier this week, I watched parts of the funeral service for Constables Fabrice Gevaudan, Doug Larche, and Dave Ross, the three RCMP officers gunned down in Moncton, NB. Thousands of other officers in the family of law enforcement came to show their solidarity at the service, marching together to honour those three whose lives were taken much too soon. I was touched by various moments during the ceremony. My heart skipped a beat as I watched the Mounties marching together in perfect unison, their distinctive red serge uniforms immaculate in parade. I was moved by the faces of these same men and women, streaked by sorrow and tears as they mourned. My heart broke as the RCMP Commissioner presented Stetsons to the families of the slain officers. I was moved by the story of Sgt. Eric Bunday, who came here from the Hillsboro Police Department, a small force just west of Portland, Oregon, who paid his own way across the continent to pay his respects to these three officers. But the moment that touched me most deeply was when I saw Danny, the canine partner of Const. David Ross, whimpering near the coffin that held his handler. Danny looked lost, and I suspect it was the kind of emotion many of us felt at this senseless murder. I don’t often agree with Prime Minister Harper, but his words echoed in my mind. He reminded us that there is an unspoken “understanding between the police and the rest of society: their service and our support.” There is an agreement that undergirds the life of an orderly society, what one reporter calls a “democratic bargain”. Society permits police officers to use force, sometimes even lethal force, to protect us as long as they do so lawfully. Our part of the bargain is to have their backs. As I was listening to the newscast, one of the reporters said something along the lines that the work of the police officers in all of the different departments,
including the RCMP, is not so much a job as it is a vocation. That caught my ear. The word vocation comes from the Latin root which means “a calling”. Those who go into this kind of work respond to an inner calling which cannot be resisted. We use this word in the church as well, to talk about faithful followers of Jesus living in the world. life is a calling, which cannot be resisted. We can ignore that call to a vocation, but it costs us something in our souls. We can put answering that call off to another time, but it keeps knocking persistently at our consciences until we respond. We can resist that call, but it is always there in the back of our minds, pushing us, prodding us. As I reflect on what would cause a person to rush into danger, that notion of vocation seems to me to be exactly the right word. Police officers are trained to do what does not come naturally. Most of us run away. But not those who are sworn to protect us. Not those who take an oath to serve and protect. Not those who serve under the motto, “Maintiens le droit.” Defend the law.

Granted, some officers overstep their bounds. That’s true in every sphere of life. There will always be people who seek a position so that they can manipulate others or lord it over others. It’s true in religion; it’s true of lawyers and doctors and teachers. But the vast majority of those who serve to protect us do so in response to that sense of being called to this kind of service, a calling that resides in their souls. This is illustrated by Constable Dave Ross rushing to deal with the situation, leaving his bbq lid up and his garage open. He didn’t hesitate for a moment to do what he was being called to do. A calling like that is explicitly a call to serve others. That’s not a popular concept in our world these days. Many of us—might I suggest even most of us?—begin by asking “What’s in it for me?” Those who live in response to such a vocation are guided by a different reference point. They seek above all else to serve, to protect, to put themselves in harm’s way so that we might not have to face that harm. I honour those who live in response to such a call. I will do more now to express my gratitude for their presence in my life and in our community. To the members of the Cranbrook and Kimberley detachments, thank you for your service. North Okanagan wins distinction of having top three worst B.C. roads C ANADIAN PRESS
VANCOUVER — Pot holes, crumbling pavement and congestion top the list in the British Columbia Automobile Association’s fourth annual survey of the province’s worst roads. The Association says motorists, pedestrians and cyclists identified 1,277 separate stretches of provincial roads they feel are unsafe or difficult to navigate. A list naming the 10 worst has been created and the top three are all in, or around, the
north Okanagan, including B.C.’s new “worst’’ thoroughfare, Silver Star Road, near Vernon. Pot holes and crumbling pavement are the problems there, with similar issues identified for the second-worst route on the list, Westside Road, southwest of Vernon, while Cosens Bay Road to the southeast, grabs third spot because of concerns about safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Most of the roads on the 2014 list have been mentioned
before, but BCAA says McKenzie Avenue in Victoria makes its debut in sixth spot because of traffic congestion while Maple Crescent, a residential street in Maple Ridge, east of Vancouver, ranks eighth due to pedestrian and cycling safety issues. BCAA says the number of votes submitted for its annual survey tripled this year in what the association believes is an expression of traveller frustration and a desire to offer opinions about the problem.
Edmonton man acquitted of hitting, killing Good Samaritan C ANADIAN PRESS
EDMONTON — A judge has acquitted an Edmonton man charged in a crash that killed a Good Samaritan two years ago. Andrew Green, who was 46, was struck and killed on the side of the Anthony Henday highway in June 2012, after pulling over to help a stranded driver. Green, who had recently moved to Edmonton from Toronto, was helping change a
tire and was putting down traffic triangles when he was hit. Kieran Porter, who is 37, was charged with careless driving and hit and run. Justice Donna Shelley said Thursday that the Crown couldn’t prove Porter was the driver who struck and killed Green. The decision came down to evidence that was deemed inadmissible because the judge determined Porter’s charter rights had been violated.
The evidence included statements that Porter made to his insurance company and a collision statement made to police, which cannot be used in court proceedings against the person who gave the statement. Porter appeared to have no emotion during the proceedings, and left quickly after the judge’s decision. The Crown said it will review the decision.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am in my mid-20s and have been with my husband for seven years. Last year, while I was attending school and working, my husband started an affair. I also discovered information about his cheating dating back three years. I have found texts, social media messages and even a secret phone. My husband doesn’t know that I am aware of his affair. We have a toddler, and I don’t know what to do. I cannot believe the man I love has been unfaithful for so long and I just found out about it. I am seriously contemplating divorce, but I feel as if there is more to it. I think my husband may be a sex addict. This is how his father treated his mother for years, and maybe it’s all he knows. I want to get him the help he needs, but I’m not sure how to handle the situation. -- A Nurse in Need Dear Nurse: This must be a terrible time for you, but you are making an awful lot of excuses for your husband’s behavior. You need to tell him what you know and ask him to go with you for counseling. If he is a sex addict, he can get help. But if he refuses to do the necessary work to repair your marriage, you will have some tough decisions to make. Please get counseling on your own so you can do what is best for you and your child. Dear Annie: I really like my mother-inlaw, but she has terrible taste and insists on buying me clothes. For my birthday last year, she gave me a blouse that looked like it came from a rummage sale, even though it still had the sales slip attached. To make her happy, I tried it on, and she squealed with delight. I thought it was hideous. I don’t want to hurt her feelings, but I cannot possibly wear this blouse. However, I’d feel terrible if I took it back to the store and she found out. My husband says to just stick the blouse in the closet and forget about it, but what if she asks me to wear it? What should I do? -- Trying To Be a Sweet DIL Dear Trying: It’s perfectly OK to thank your mother-in-law sweetly for the blouse and then return it. She is unlikely to find out. If she later asks you to wear it, you can say that it wasn’t exactly your taste and you picked out something that matched your wardrobe better. But it would be a true kindness to ask her to accompany you the next time you go shopping. Tell her it’s a “girl bonding” experience. Go out for lunch. Let her see the types of things that attract your attention. Ask her opinion. Help her pick out something you think looks good on her. This is how you get to know each other. Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from “Upset Dad,” whose 14-year-old son wasn’t getting enough playing time on his basketball team. As a longtime coach, I wanted to give some input. Rightly or wrongly, the goal of school teams and coaches is to win the game without worrying about playing time. Parents should probably know this, but many don’t. (Practice and scrimmages are a different story.) Parents are generally very poor evaluators of their child’s talent. I would suspect this child is less skilled than the other players on the squad. My advice would be to talk respectfully to the coach to find out what your child could be working on to get more playing time. You will learn a lot about the coach’s mindset. His siblings, Michael, Mary Lane, Elizabeth Parkinson (Barry), Tim, and Kevin’s “Lady friend” Sherry. Kevin was predeceased by his Mother, Father and “Sheba”. Kevin worked for the City of Cranbrook for 37 years and just recently retired. There will be a gathering at Kevin’s watering hole, (Cranbrook Hotel), Sunday, June 15th, after 5:00 p.m.. All are welcome to attend. Kevin will be missed by many.
