Iconic theatre gets a facelift Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Oak Bay’s iconic theatre building will get a fresh look this summer after council OK’d the work Monday night. The property owner of 2188 Oak Bay Ave. plans to remove and install new exterior cladding and windows. Because the building is listed in the Community Heritage Registry council had the Heritage Commission look at the application. They met June 3 and agreed the work should go ahead provided they work with the property owners on a colour scheme and retain the curved shape of diagonals on the second story. Coun. Cairine Green expressed pleasure at how quickly the commission met and reviewed the application. “It’s a really good reflection on what is potentially a good relationship between the community and this property owner.” Work includes removing the Oak Bay Theatre sign and barnstyle commercial doors which will all be refurbished then reinstalled. “This is an icon for Oak Bay,” said Mayor Nils Jensen. “We look forward to its rejuvenation.” Council lifted a protection order put in place May 26 and the owner hopes to start work Monday (June 16). cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com
