Women play role in Canadian businesses Women have a prominent role in Canadian businesses according to research from Statistics Canada. The 2011 Survey on Financing and Growth of
Small and Medium Enterprises, 2011, examines business ownership for businesses with one to 99 employees and 100 to 499 employees. According to the study
53.8 per cent of the smaller businesses and 66.0 per cent of medium sized businesses were owned by men only. Businesses where male and female owners
had equal partnerships accounted for 18.2 per cent of all small businesses. Another 13.5 per cent of small businesses were solely owned by women.

Increasing number of women self-employed Close to one in eight working women in Canada are self-employed. According to a 2009 study by Statistics Canada and Status of Women Canada, nearly
one million women or 11.9 per cent of those with jobs were selfemployed. This is a significant increase from 1976, when 8.6 per cent of working
Canadian women were self-employed. More than 1.5 million Canadians work at businesses owned by women, according to a 2012 study by the BMO

Nesters Markets’ focus is on fresh products in all of our departments, we continue to support our local farmers and businesses promoting their products.
