With no outward signs of progress, a third single day rotating strike is scheduled Thursday, June 12 in District 69, while teachers across the province vote on a full walkout. After a Labour Relations Board ruling allowing the province to cut teacher pay 10 per cent during the partial job action and lockout, B.C.’s 41,000 teachers will vote on escalating to a full-scale strike. With results expected Tuesday night, a full strike could begin June 16, leaving nine school days that could be affected in most districts. “We want to see an end to that chaos and a fair resolution to this,” said B.C. Teachers’ Federation President Jim Iker at a June 4 news conference before the LRB ruling. “The time has come to apply even more pressure, to get a fair deal and get better support.” According to a B.C. government statement Sunday, “The Ministry of Education and the B.C. Public School Employers Association (BCPSEA) want to assure parents that every effort is being made to ensure the strike does not disadvantage students, nor delay their transition to the next grade or on to post-secondary.” They explain that while a strike would close schools, students in grades 10-12 will be able to attend school to write final and provincial exams. For all grades, “Final report cards will be sent to parents, but written comments may be shorter than usual,” according to the statement. The government has asked the LRB to deem the work required for report cards as an essential service. They added that most students going on to post-secondary education in B.C. have already been admitted based on their current marks. The outside pressure is increasing with groups like the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) calling for an immediate end to the strike and lockout. “Successful outcomes for all students — not just those graduating from Grade 12 — are being affected by this labour dispute,” said BCCPAC president Terry Berting. “This has got to stop.” See STRIKE PAY, page A4

As of June 3, open fires have been restricted in size throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. The ban restricts fires to half-metre (19.5”) high by a half-metre wide and allows cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. It covers all B.C. Parks, crown and private land except municipalities that have their own wildfire prevention bylaws (like Parksville and Qualicum Beach). BITTERSWEET EVENT: Happy children ran wild under calm, sunny skies Friday night at the Coombs Community Picnic but there was also a bittersweet edge to the event. The picnic was held at the French Creek Community School, one of the elementary schools slated for closure. The focus was on honouring the 102 year-old-school. Those connected to the community landmark made speeches, while other volunteers were honoured for their dedication to local community events. Water restrictions for Parksville Qualicum Beach residents are in full swing, but water purveyors don’t expect to tighten the reigns any further this summer. This comes after the 2013 winter season which Regional District of Nanaimo water services manager Mike Donnelly said “saw no snowpack and half the precipitation we usually see.” Donnelly said this “generated serious concern” amongst water officials who feared water levels wouldn’t be replenished leading to stringent water restrictions in the community. However, Donnelly said “the skies opened

up the second week of February” and snowpack levels recovered significantly to the point where Arrowsmith Dam filled up. “We’re in pretty good shape,” he said about the water levels in the mid-Island area. During the summer months Parksville, Qualicum Beach and RDN electoral areas have different ways of regulating water usage. In Parksville, project manager for Englishman River Water Service Mike Squire said from May to August residents must practice “water conservation level two.” This means residents’ “watering times” are from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Residents are allocated four hours per day with even numbered houses on even days and odd numbered houses on odd days. Strike pay running out

He said the “feud” is having a detrimental effect on students, particularly those most vulnerable, and creating financial hardship for struggling families. They are also concerned about the cancellation of extra-curricular activities, end-of-year celebrations and sporting events, and urge the government and the BCTF to concentrate on achieving a new collective agreement. Meanwhile the province quietly reached a tentative agreement with 34,000 support staff, mostly represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), including everyone from teaching assistants and secretaries to bus drivers and maintenance workers. Details are not yet available, but the government said a new five year deal was reached after five intense days of negotiation. A possible factor in the June 9-10 strike vote is the recent announcement by BCTF president Iker that they are running out of strike pay.He didn’t say how much was left, but that the $50 per strike-day pay would only last a few more days. Although neither side is saying much about the negotiations, various media reports have the union reducing its wage demands from a 15.9 per cent increase to 14 per cent over four years. The government is offering 7.25 per cent over six years plus a signing bonus. The BCTF also says it is fighting for better class sizes and composition. A Parksville fire fighter has been selected from more than 400 departments in the province as Trainer of the Year. Captain Mike Davidson of the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department was given the award after being nominated by his peers at the B.C. Fire Training Officers Conference hosted in Parksville last month. B.C. Fire Training Officers Association president Dean

Colthorp described the accolade as “prestigious” and said Davidson is “a good recipient of the award.” “He has a huge amount of enthusiasm and passion,” Colthorp said about Davidson. “He really takes individual fire fighters under his wing and gives them not only guidance but also teaches them how to be a better fire fighter.” Davidson said he has been with the department since 2001. “I’ve always been interested in (fire fighter) training,” he said. “I love teaching — I tell my students they’ll never forget their recruit class.” Davidson said he was “totally humbled” by the award, which

he said took him by complete surprise. The Trainer of the Year award has been given out for more than two decades to various deserving individual fire fighters. In 2010 PVFD’s Marc Norris received the award. Davidson said the PVFD is a great institution. “Two years ago we had five of our volunteer members accepted by full-time career departments,” he explained. “That’s substantial — and a testament to the training Parksville does.” Davidson said he sees tremendous potential in many Parksville fire fighters and encourages anybody interested to come out.

The third annual Parksville Zombie Walk saw about 60 corpses slowly make their way along the Island Highway, down to the beachfront and then to the Pacific Brimm. As the undead prepared for the zombie apocalypse they also brought a donation for the food bank.

The union partner groups of School District 69 are initially supportive of an increase in school board trustee pay. “Trustees in our district have been very reluctant in the past to increase compensation during an extended period of budget challenges,” board chair Lynette Kershaw explained of a late addition to their ongoing budget deliberations. “As a result, trustee renumeration in our district has lagged behind other districts quite substantially.” “No sitting board can vote itself a raise, it’s the obligation of the outgoing board to review renumeration for the upcoming board,” she said, pointing out that the current trustee renumeration of $9,720 is well below the provincial average. She proposed bumping the next board up 39 per cent to the provincial average of $13,500 and undertaking a full consultation process with stake-

holder groups and partners before a final decision. The chair’s renumeration would go up to $16,500. The increases, supported by the board, would add a total of $11,670 to next year’s budget. Because they needed unanimous consent to give all the readings in one meeting, they passed the first two last week and have scheduled a meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 10 (tonight) in the PCTC forum. “Taking a look at other jurisdictions, seeing what the average is and factoring in a COLA (cost of living increase), seems to be a fair way of coming up with an increase,” said Mount Arrowsmith Teachers’ Association president Debbie Morran. “I just wanted to point out that’s exactly what we’re trying to do for teacher’s across the province.” Read the full story ONLINE at www.pqbnews.com

Spring is a challenging time of year for the City’s parks department now diligently planting annuals and trees, weeding, mowing, fixing irrigation, top dressing and over-seeding Highway 19A, emptying garbage cans, collecting litter, repairing vandalism and responding to requests for service, as well as installing park furniture, new dugouts at Springwood Park and a new scoreboard at the little league diamond, expanding the volleyball courts and bringing the sports fields back to peak condition in time for the start of summer sports. During the normal spring activity of planting and repairing winter damage, weed growth may outpace staff efforts. However, once the spring rush is over, staff will be able to catch up with those areas needing more attention. Hanging baskets and planters will be completed in the next two weeks and the flower bed at Pym Street has been planted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.

Now in effect, Water Conservation Level 2 allows for odd numbered addresses to water on odd numbered days and even numbered addresses on even numbered days. Watering times are 6 to 10 morning and evening for no more than two hours per period with four hours maximum watering per day. [Water Conservation]

Tax notices for the current year were mailed in May. Contact the City’s property tax department (250 954-4653) if you did not receive your notice. Prior to July 2, residents must claim the Northern and Rural Home Owner Grant by bringing the completed application to City Hall or by claiming the grant online [online services]. Home owner grant applications must be completed each year you are eligible. If the July 2 deadline is not met, your property tax account will have an outstanding balance and receive an immediate 5% penalty.

Under the provisions of the Community Charter, Council may exempt land and/or improvements from municipal property taxes for the next calendar year, subject to certain requirements which in general, restrict exemption to non-profit organizations using the lands for specific non-profit purposes. Deadline for application is noon, June 30. Details, application form and policy may be obtained from City Hall or from the website.

Parksville Votes 2014

Attention voters! Voters will see changes to how voting is conducted in the City of Parksville. We will no longer use a voters’ list; all voters will be required to bring two pieces of acceptable identification to the voting place. The two pieces must contain your name and address and at least one with a signature. If you do not have documentation showing residency, then two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) are still required and you will be required to make a “solemn declaration” as to your residency. A list of documents which may be accepted are on the City’s website [Council/Election].

Attention candidates! For the first time in BC, voters will be electing candidates for a four-year term. Those elected in 2014 will serve on Council until November 2018. Elections BC will manage the financial requirements and reporting for all local government election candidates with recently introduced new legislation (Local Elections Campaign Financing Act). A bike could change someone’s life. That’s why Robin Campbell says Manna Homeless Society, which he co-founded four years ago, is branching into transportation. “I know so many people that need bikes and it will change their quality of life—it will just be so wonderful,” he said. Campbell picks people up on a regular basis to get them places they need to go for food, shelter and other reasons. He said not only would a bike be good exercise for someone but it would allow them to be more independent,

relying on others less, and ensuring they are able to get places they need to go. He said he has asked homeless and those living in poverty before if they would consider a bike but they respond they don’t have money to get one. Campbell and Manna Homeless Society is asking the public for donations of good working bikes, which the society can then tune up and give to qualifying members of the public. They could also use safety gear, including helmets and vests, bike baskets, air pumps and other bicycle parts. Manna has a van and can pick up bikes, or they can be dropped off at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington. Call Campbell at 250-248-0845 for more information.

Parksville Qualicum Beach have decreased their water consumption, following a North American trend seeing more conservative uses of water. Donnelly said the RDN delivers an average of 260 litres of water per person, per day, on an annual basis, just above Parksville’s average of 250 litres. Weir said Qualicum Beach delivers an average of 441 litres of water per person, per day, on an annual basis. While Qualicum Beach’s numbers far exceed that of Parksville or the electoral areas, all three regions use less water than the provincial average, which is 490 litres per person per day. These figures includes only residential use — excluding industrial, commercial or agricultural use. “Water consumption levels are going down,” said Donnelly. “It’s gradual but it’s going down — this points to a cultural change assisted by a technological change.”

Qualicum Beach director of engineering, utilities and airport Bob Weir explains the town “looks at it (water usage) from the point of view of stress on our system.” Weir said the town does not restrict residents from watering by the day but by the time. “There is a prohibition on watering from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. but you can water any day of the week,” he said. “We ask people not to water when the sun is up.” Weir said this system “allows for more freedom.” He said this is beneficial because “the more you restrict the use of water the greater strain you put on your (water) systems.” Donnelly said in the last decade, people in

fter one of the worst winters in a century — well, for the rest of the country — everything is growing and colourful, reaching to a warm sun. Crops are in the ground and some local vegetables are appearing at the many and varied markets in Parksville Qualicum Beach. It’s a time of year when one can say, yes, I can do this 100-mile diet and quite enjoy it. Before refrigerators and grocery stores, this was a much more important time of year. The work one did in the garden right now — the love, care, attention and sweat equity afforded — paid dividends in the months ahead at harvest time. There was a sense that yes, these are the plentiful times, but serious thought was given to the lesser months, the November-March time when the earth doesn’t give what it gives in the summer and fall. For many in our region, that kind of thought process around food still exists, and good on them. It might be a good idea for local businesses to jump aboard that train of thought, too. It’s super busy now. The restaurants, shops, stores of all shapes and sizes are in their hay-making season, a time that determines if they will have a good year or not. Such is life in a beautiful region that is so attractive to tourists. It’s not too busy, however, for businesses to think like the farmer of days gone by. What are businesses doing now that will set them up to survive in that dark first weekend of December or that rainy day in February? Forgive the amateur economics that follow, but we had a thought. If 50 businesses in Parksville Qualicum Beach set themselves up in this busy time to get into a position to keep two employees more than they normally would for the October to March period, the economy would get a huge boost. That would be 100 people, making, say, $2,500/month for six months. That’s $1.5 million into the local economy. If two-thirds of that was spent on what these people would normally disburse — mortgage or rent, bills, food, etc. — that still leaves $500,000 to be pumped into the local economy that wasn’t there previously. One reaps what one sows, as a farmer or business owner. As we enjoy the summer months ahead, are we getting ready for the down time? — Editorial by John Harding

Letters INAPPROPRIATE PHOTO It was the Third Annual Civic Bike Challenge where 68 cyclists from kids to seniors, the two Oceanside mayors, many of the town staff, etc. enjoying a leisurely and safe ride through our towns and The NEWS found the one photo with two cyclists without helmets and one of them on a cell phone. Did you want to make a anti cyclist statement on purpose? Qualicum Beach and Parksville are both committed to improving the safety on the street and the bike challenge ride is about a bike-safe friendly community. But if you are more interested on making an article about bike safety, and there is much to improve on the motorist as well as from the cyclist side, I would be delighted to work with you, and there the featured picture would be appropriate. TEXT AND CYCLE? There is something wrong with that picture on page A5 of Tuesday’s edition of The NEWS. The caption under the photo about Qualicum Beach winning the bike-to-work challenge against Parksville says this is an event that “promotes the ever-increasing number of people safely commuting by bicycle.” The two people on the lead bikes in the photo do not have helmets on. The man right in the front appears to be texting or reading a text while cycling. That’s not really the safety measures they are trying to get across. CINDY LEIVO Parksville

CAP TEACHER PAY Re: Leonard Melman’s letter ‘Important strike questions’ (The NEWS, June 5). He is absolutely right that the government can not hire thousands of new teachers under the current conditions. Instead, the astronomical high salaries of the teachers should be reduced to a realistic level and with the saved tax money the gov-

ernment can hire extra teachers with no additional costs to the taxpayers. It is not a great imposition to have a salary cap at $50,000 for teachers. A good education is the guarantor for the future of this country, but the actual education children are getting now is bad for the future of Canada. There are several reasons, summer breaks of 10 weeks and the quality of the teachers being two of them. When you see the young people after finishing school are not even able to speak clearly, then the teachers have failed. As the students have the right of education and good education means a good future for Canada, teachers should not be allowed to strike. WILFRIED G. WEBER Nanoose Bay

STRIKE NOT ABOUT PAY Having been a carpenter since 1954 and a high school teacher for 37 years I feel qualified to comment on the Tuesday, June 3 edition of The NEWS. First, to Grade 10 student Robert Filmer: when I quit the regular Composite High School in Edmonton it was because of classroom composition, not wages. When a vice principal insisted on placing students, who could not do basic mathematics, in my carpentry framing class two years in a row, I could not stand the pain of seeing them sit there, day after day, for the whole year without understanding what was going on, so I quit. I then taught at the Young Offenders Centre where I was actually able to teach again. When I retired, at age 65, a carpenter, in his mid-40s, came to take my place. His wage that year was $75,000 and mine was $68,000. Was I being greedy, Robert, because I quit? Thank you to superintendent Rollie Koop for pointing out that I did not get paid for coaching Monday, Wednesday, Friday after school and Saturday mornings as well as weekend trips to competitions. Second, I would like to thank Grade 10 student Ginny Lefeaux for a very impressive letter to the editor. For me, she has nailed down the problem extremely well — please hire her for a committee for the next

two years she is in school. She sums up my experience over the 37 years. At one point I had 38 students in a Sociology 20 class and had no problems, aside from the horrendous marking load, because all the students had a similar academic background. I always told parents they were welcome to spend a day with me to see what I did for all the money they were paying me. I actually had one parent come and spend a morning with me; when we broke for lunch he said: “I would not trade you jobs for all the tea in China — I’ll stick to being an electrician.” Who is making the decisions that students do not need basic math, cannot be given a ‘zero’ for work they do not do, do not learn to write and spell correctly, etc.? Let’s put some common sense people in these positions. In the past I often had occasion to ask: “Did someone just come back from the U.S.A. with a Masters or Ph.D? ED FERGUSSON Parksville

OHC WORKING Re: the Oceanside Health Centre. We have to admit, in the beginning we were pretty skeptical about the role and value of the new health centre. We groaned when our doctor decided to join the primary care team. As patients, the first few months were a little trying while they were getting used to delivering health care in a different way, but we stuck with it, at times reluctantly. Now, 10 months later, we have nothing but praise for both the clinic and the staff. The primary care doctor and her small team of nurse practitioners, nurses and assistants are very helpful and readily available. Other members of the health care team such as home care, long term care and wound care are easily accessible. We have also been very fortunate to have had some of the care providers visit us at home. Think you can handle the Tomahawk Steak? Three-pound meat lollipop costs $139 at Pacific Prime BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

Size matters and a new menu item at Pacific Prime Steak and Chop at The Beach Club in Parksville is a first for Vancouver Island. The tomahawk chop is a Fred Flintstone-sized steak that is not for the faint of heart. Executive Chef Rick Davidson admits the $139 slab of certified Angus beef is pricey, but he says the three-pound meat lollipop that resembles something out of the Stone Age easily feeds two modern-day humans. “The price point is not cheap but it feeds two-plus people and you can take home the bone for your dog.” Legend has it the tomahawk originated on cattle drives along the Rio Grande in Texas, and Davidson said as far he knows no other restaurant offers it in these parts. “We are the first to do the tomahawk on the Island and one of just two in B.C. offering it, according to my protein supplier. It is called a tomahawk because it looks like a weapon.”

The bone-in rib-eye steak is cut from between the sixth and 12th ribs of the cow and is wellmarbled with fat, making it tender and flavourful and a steak lovers dream. Meat is scraped from the bone (Frenched), leaving a handle with the meat portion resembling a First Nations tomahawk. Davidson said he named his gargantuan steak feature The Tomahawk Experience and while it is geared toward serious carnivores, the massive piece of meat is meant to offer a unique over the top dining adventure. “With my team I try to play with food and have a bit of fun with it. It’s all about having a fun experience,” he explained. The first tomahawk sold at the restaurant was presented to a couple from Buffalo, New York last week and Davidson said when it was brought to the table all of their diners were talking about it. “It created quite a buzz in the restaurant and the guy who ordered it had fun eating it. It is absolutely OK to pick up the bone and gnaw on it and he did.” The big chunk of tender beef is served with a bouquetiere of vegetables and mashed potatoes, a side of red wine jus and béarnaise sauce.

Pacific Prime Steak and Chop is also one of the only restaurants on the Island that uses the Montague broiling system, guaranteeing tender, juicy and delicious steaks every time. Davidson said when he joined The Beach Club in 2012 his mission was to make the restaurant a destination for steak lovers. “We are a steak and chop house and when I took over we only had three steaks on the menu so I wanted to expand that and make it a true steak house because we are the only one in this area.” Davidson agreed The Tomahawk Experience is the perfect celebration dish and would certainly make a statement for Father’s Day. He said the restaurant will be presenting a special four-course dinner menu for Father’s Day as well as their a-la-cart menu and of course their unique Sunday brunch menu. When Davidson created his brunch features he said he wanted them to be different and creative. “When I started here I set out to do a different Sunday brunch. I am a competitive guy so I wanted to take the dishes to the next level, especially since we

The Oceanside Mind Body Spirit Expo is coming to Parksville June 21. Organizer Olly Chaperon describes the firsttime event as “everything to do with spirituality and natural health.” Chaperon said she has 16 local vendors currently signed up and there is room for a few more. “The expo is an opportunity for people to come and see what local businesses are offering in terms of alternative health, cleansing and tools of enlightenment,” she explained. “It’s all about the natural way of doing things.” Chaperon said there are a lot more people looking to alternative health options these days. “There are ways of distressing yourself without taking medication and cleansing your body without overloading it with toxins,” she said. “There are more natural approaches and this expo will showcase what we offer in the community.” The Oceanside Mind Body Spirit Expo is a one-day event June 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Quality Inn Bayside Resort. Parksville Qualicum Beach has the best SPCA in the province. The local branch of the the B.C. SPCA, located in Errington, was recently honoured by the provincial organization, singling out the work of manager Nadine Durante, who in turn passed the accolades on to the community. “This community really does so much to support us,” she said pointing out the small staff wouldn’t be able to operate without the more than 2,300 hours of volunteer fundraising and 4,200 hours of volunteer hands-on work every year. “The work the volunteers do allows staff to do the sometimes tough work we have to do,” she said. On top of that she thanked the community for the donation and purchase of items at their fundraising events, and the adoption of animals by the public, which was up an impressive 29 per cent in 2013, which the B.C. SPCA pointed out with the annual award. “Although any of our branches are deserving of recognition, Parksville does stand out,” said B.C. SPCA Vancouver Island, Salt Spring and Powell River regional manager Graeme Wright in a news release.

“There’s a feeling when you first walk in the door — it’s a welcoming environment,” he said. “The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. It’s a warm, hospitable feeling and (the branch) is always organized and clean. They demonstrate a high level of professionalism and take their shared responsibility seriously, but they know how to have fun, too.” B.C. SPCA chief operations officer Mark Tahar said the branch met each of its financial targets in 2013, excelling in adoptions and fundraising, adding “We never receive customer complaints about them, which is significant, given the sometimes emotional nature of animal welfare work.” In 2013 the community helped them raise more than $41,500 and the branch helped a record 278 animals find homes. Wright said that Durante and her staff and volunteers are always willing to help whenever the opportunity arises, and work hard to keep a close relationship with their Community Council. Durante and community council chair Sabrina Qureshi, who attended the annual meeting in Vancouver, were completely shocked by the award and it was an honour just to be there and meet some of the other people and heroic surviving animals that were honoured. JESSIE REYNOLDS (NEE ALLEN)

Jessie Reynolds passed away on May 21, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on July 1, 1927 at St. Paul, Alberta. She is predeceased by her parents Walter and Mabel Allen, brothers Walter and John and sisters Edith Reynolds and Beatrice. She is survived by her husband Olaf Reynolds, her brother Douglas (Mary) and sister Grace, step-daughter/niece Barbara (Allan), Parksville and step-son/nephew Richard (Lori), Port Alberni, granddaughters Natalie, Jennifer, Mallori, Jillian and Kaitlyn, great-granddaughter Madeline and great-grandson Parks. Nieces Margaret, Caroline (Roy), Donald, and great-nieces Elizabeth and Jessica. Jessie attended Qualicum high school until Grade 11 then received her Grade 12 and in Calgary. She worked as a and Practical Practical Nurse nurse Certificate certificate in Practical Nurse in in St. St. Paul, Paul, Red Red Deer and Nanaimo before returning home to nurse practical nurse her mother and father in Port Alberni. After their passing, she moved to Parksville with her brother Douglas and was an avid gardener and traveler. Her adventurous spirit took her to Australia (twice), New Zealand, Fiji, the western US, Mexico, all provinces of Canada, Britain (3 times), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Africa on a safari in Kenya, cruises to Alaska, and from England, Shetland Islands, Halifax to Boston. Her last trip was on the Rocky Mountaineer last spring which she especially enjoyed. She was an active member of Knox United Church from 1992 to 2007 and enjoyed singing in the choir. In 2007 she started a new adventure when she married Olaf (he was 82 and she was 80 years old). Jessie had a beautiful smile for everyone, was always cheerful and loved to laugh. She will sadly be missed by her family and friends. A huge thank you from the family to Hospice for their loving support and also to Dr. El Karsh. Born August 30th, 1924 Ascended May 29th, 2014 Wendy as she was commonly called passed peacefully in her sleep, she was proceeded into light by her husband Les who passed in January 2009. A world traveler by the age of 2 she was back and forth from England to Sri Lanka, where her father worked as a train engineer. They lived the grand life with many servants until it all ended in 1938 prior to World War II and Wendy came back to England at age 14 to poverty and a life of work to help support the family and her 4 younger siblings. At 18 she joined the Army and went to war in London working as an â€œAck Ackâ€? girl. She trained on radar when it was top secret and radioed to the gunner to shoot down the planes. Upon discharge she returned to Fleetwood, Lancashire, her birthplace and in 1949 married Leslie Fish. They had two children, Anthony and Elizabeth and emigrated to Canada in 1965. In 1999 Wendy and Les moved to Vancouver Island and loved the Qualicum, Parksville area. Wendy was a sparkling, huge presence who had a creative and indomnitable spirit. An amazing sewer, designer and knitter. She loved animals intensely. She is deeply missed by her children, friends and family worldwide. A brother in Africa, a sister in England, a brother on the Island of Guernsey and a sister-in-law in New Zealand.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darrel on Monday, June 2, 2104 at St Josephâ€™s Hospital in Comox with his family by his side. He was predeceased by daughter, Nikki; parents, Daphne and George; and sister, Darlene Towle. Darrel is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane; daughter, Jorgie Alexander (Aaron Bonnell); grandchildren, Kaitlynne, Kennedy, and Jordan Bonnell; brothers, Doug and Ted; brother-in-law, Ron Towle; sister-in-law, Donna Alexander; nieces, Bonnie (Macey), Darlene, Daeshe, Darissa (Daebren), Breanne, and Bailey; nephews, Darron, Brody, and Brett. Darrel was born in Vancouver and raised in Richmond, BC. He was a man of many and varied talents and was successful at whatever endeavours he undertook. In June of 1969, he started his apprenticeship and later became a Journeyman Steamfitter with membership in the United Association of Plumbing and Pipefitting local Union 170 for 45 years. His love of the outdoors, however, steered him in a different direction. The family moved to the Cariboo area of British Columbia where Darrel had fished and hunted for many years. There he started his trucking busines and became a faller, eventually starting his own logging company. In subsequent years, he was a partner in a construction company and created is own falling contracting company. In 1988, they relocated to Bowser, British Columbia and a few years later Gordon started his custom cabinetry business â€“ Qualicum Cabinets Ltd. His love of wood was evident throughout his life, not only in his career choices, but also in the award winning furniture he designed and built. You will be desperately missed and forever in our hearts! Diane. Royals struggle, but snap losing streak

The Parksville Royals managed to snap a seven game losing skid on Sunday, but walked away with only one victory in four tries last weekend at home. Hosting a pair of double headers, the Royals were in tough against the North Delta Blue Jays and Whalley Chiefs at Inouye–Wallace Field. Saturday saw the Royals and the Blue Jays squaring off for two games in their first meeting this season, with the Royals losing both games. It was a quick turn around to play the Whalley Chiefs on Sunday, winning one of the two games. Game one Saturday against the Jays was a tight game that went the distance, into extra innings. Parksville’s Andrew Evernden started the game and went six strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out six batters. Colton Tuka came on in relief and took the loss, giving up the go ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and giving the Blue Jays the hard fought 3-2 win. Errington’s Liam Ballance had an RBI for the Royals, going one for two at the plate. Game two was a different story as the Royals lost 5–1. Keller Anderson took the loss on the mound, going five innings and allowing five runs, four of which were

going, with only four hits on the game while leaving eight runners on base. “We had a good first game but it was

those little mental errors that got us,” assistant coach Bruce Biro said. “We put a lot of our eggs in the basket of that first game and it showed. It was a good team game that we played though which was nice to see during our losing streak so we knew that things were looking better on the horizon.” Sunday saw the Royals getting off to a good start against the Whalley Chiefs. Owen Kelly was on the mound for game one and pitched five innings, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on four hits with six strikeouts. Nanoose Bay’s Josh Anderson came in to pitch two solid innings in relief, earning the save as the Royals walked away with a 4–3 win. Evernden had two RBI’s while Len Nakatsuka and Ethan Fox had the other two. The second game wasn’t as pretty as Adam McKillican, just back from a broken thumb, was roughed up for six runs in the first inning, after which the Chiefs never looked back, taking game two 13–2. “We hit the ball pretty good, played some pretty solid defense and we had our pitchers throwing well on the mound,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “It was nice to see us get that win, it was a tough game to win but we got the job done. Lots to improve on after this weekend though, that’s for sure.”

Kyle Kramer returned from his first season as a member of the Brown Bears and is looking to build on his freshman season. Kramer, a Ballenas graduate, suited up for 30 of the 31 games with the NCAA’s Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Bears in his first year at Brown, part of the Ivy League division of the NCAA. A former Save-On-Foods Oceanside General and Nanaimo Clipper, Kramer had some adjusting to do in his first season at Brown.

“It’s a faster game at the university level, for sure,” Kramer said. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect in terms of game speed but it’s pretty quick so I had some adjustments to make right out of the gate. It took a bit of time but I eventually found my feet and adjusted pretty well.” A hard-hitting forward with a nose for the net, Kramer managed five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in his first season but isn’t worried. Kramer increased his point totals in all four of his seasons with the B.C. Hockey League’s Clippers.

In 2010, he had 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists), 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists) in 2011, 56 points (29 goals, 27 assists) in 2012 and he was the Clippers’ leading scorer in his final season, notching 30 goals and 27 assists. “I wasn’t really expecting to be a big contributor in my first season there, it’s more about finding where you fit in with the team and learning the system,” he said. “Now that I’ve had one season under my belt I feel like I’ll be able to ramp my game up a level or two next year and hopefully be able to help the team on

The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club held its club mixed triples competition under sunny skies recently, making for some great bowling action. The teams for this tournament were made up by the games committee with the idea of introducing some of its newer members to tournament play. In 1989 The Wealthy Barber (David Chilton) told readers “to look for (mutual) funds with a long-term track record; to make sure that the team who created the success was still running the show; to emphasize consistency by looking for funds that did well in both bear and bull markets; and to stay away from fad funds, focusing instead on value-oriented, disciplined management teams.” Now that nearly 25 years have passed, let’s have a look and see how this approach has worked out. Not so well, I’m afraid.

To his credit though, he concedes this in the sequel The Wealthy Barber Returns (2011). In his words: “I’m forced to admit that funds matching those criteria over the years have collectively underperformed the market. What’s worse, some of the management teams in whom I was most confident have posted the weakest returns. It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”

Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.

It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

Nana Cook says she was inspired by her trip to Barkerville

Artist Nana Cook spent the winter and spring hashing through her research, sketches and photos to create a historic new series which will hang near Barkerville throughout the summer. The Nanoose Bay artist fell in love with the historic town of Barkerville during a trip there last year and was soon invited back to the B.C. town to be Theatre Royal’s first Artist in Residence. Last summer, Cook spent 10 days watching shows, getting to know the theatre, the cast, wandering around the mountain town and its cottages and learning about the historical sites. She has now created 20 paintings, and although she is usually known for her nature and landscape pieces, this collection is largely portraits. “I kept finding I was painting people,” she said. “They are the ones that really make the place come to life.”

The nostalgic portraits are bright and evocative while her paintings of the town’s old buildings are also striking, showing great detail like snow damage, imperfections in the logs and capturing a variety of textures. The primary goal of Cook’s project is to raise funds for the Theatre Royal, operated by Newman & Wright Theatre Company and the Barkerville Heritage Trust, she said. “The money we raise with my paintings will help Theatre Royal continue to bring to life the story of Barkerville, and add much needed funds to preserving the town,” she said. The series will hand at the Singing Camel Gallery in Wells, B.C. (five kilometers from Barkerville) all summer and Cook will be in attendance at the Gallery from June 21 to July 15. Local residents can order giclee prints of the series through Nana Cook’s website or through Theatre Royal at www.theatreroyal. ca. members. But once again they were forced to move when the Rocking Horse Pub was closing down. (The Rocking horse Pub has since re-opened). In 2001 the club moved the venue of the Show N’ Shine to the Town of Qualicum Beach where it continues to be held until this day. The Town of Qualicum Beach is second to none in terms of location, design, beauty and atmosphere. We now have over forty members and rely on an additional 90-100 outside volunteers to put on one of the largest car shows on Vancouver Island with approximately 600 cars and upwards of 20,000 spectators. No wonder Oprah Winfrey declared on one of her shows that the Seaside Cruizer’s Show N’ Shine is one of the 10 best things to do on Father’s Day. On April 5, 2005 the Seaside Cruizers were incorporated as a non-profit Community Fundraising Society in British Columbia and we continue to donate the net proceeds of our car show to local charities and community groups.

This is the 21st. Anniversary of the Seaside Cruizers Car Club. The club was formed in 1993 by six local car enthusiasts. The Club was founded on the basis of being a casual, low key club of guys who simply wanted to get together, talk about cars and put on a small annual car show. In planning for that show they decided the best weekend of the cruising season that was available at that time was the Father’s Day Weekend in June. The inaugural Seaside Cruizers Father’s Show was held and attracted about 65 cars. The first three shows were held at the Island Hall Hotel, now the current site of the Beach Club, in Parksville. When the Island Hall closed it’s doors we moved to the Rocking Horse Pub in Nanoose Bay where the next five shows were held. This was a beautiful location on several acres of grass with the Pub, live music and just a great time overall. By this time the Club had grown to 12

BRIAN TATE PERFORMS IN LANTZVILLE ON JUNE 17

A concert celebrating 60 A concert in Lantzville will feature a wellloved choir director, musician and educator who has performed many times in this area. Brian Tate was the director of the Island Soul Choir until last year and he’s performed in the Jazz and Cheesecake event at Morningstar Farm, and at Knox United Church in Parksville, among others events. On June 17 he will commemorate his 60th birthday with the concert at St. Philip-by-theSea Anglican Church in Lantzville, the third in a series called How Can I Keep Singing. He has performed the show in Victoria and Vancouver to rave reviews. The show, presented by Island Soul Choir, begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 each, on sale at www.islandsoulchoir.com/briantate and at the door. The idea of the show is based around a

concert of songs that has had special meaning to Tate throughout his life and career, as well as new material he has always wanted to perform. The two musical styles that have had the greatest influence on Tate are classical and jazz, and since they are rarely heard together, he decided to combine them for an eclectic and unusual program. The classical set will feature songs by Faure, Vaughan-Williams, Barber, Mahler and a set of spirituals. The jazz set will feature songs by Stephen Sondheim and a tribute to the legendary Bill Evans-Tony Bennett sessions. He is collaborating with pianist Michael Creber, a long-time colleague. Tate currently directs City Soul Choir with 100 singers in Vancouver. — NEWS Staff

The quartet is made up of four seasoned musicians, Gary Hodi on keyboards and vocals, Colin Campbell on vocals, guitar and horn, Doug Gretsinger on bass guitar and Tony Toly on drums and vocals.
