About 20 people turned out to a public hearing in 100 Mile House on May 20 to discuss proposed bylaw changes to allow backyard beekeeping and chickens, with certain restrictions, in single- or two-family residential zones. It was one of three hearings held in Cariboo municipalities by the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) to gain resident input on allowing these hobby farming activities. Several members of the 100 Mile House Beekeepers Support Group attended, including Denese Hark, and her husband, Roger Meeks, to participate in the discussions. Hark says CRD development services manager Karen Moores made a PowerPoint presentation on the proposed bylaw amendments, which have been underway in draft form since June 2013. Feedback sought on backyard bees cen-
tred on whether electric fencing should be required to deter attracting bears to the honey in the hives, the beekeeper explains. The comments she and Meeks made reflected their opposition to that regulation, as they are in favour of leaving it to homeowners to control hive access. Hark notes this might be accomplished with guard dogs, other fencing, or by locating them on roofs or in a building. “We have an electric fence around our yard – but we don’t feel it should be mandatory. “Beekeepers will do whatever they have to to protect their bees.... They are part of your family, you don’t want to lose them, [and] it is a fair chunk of change that you have invested in those bees. It is not a cheap hobby to get into.” Hark and Meeks had lobbied for two years to have beekeeping allowed in residential zones, after they discovered their beehives at Horse Lake were illegal under a CRD bylaw for their zoning. “rogue beekeepers,” since they knew it fell under complaint-driven bylaw enforcement, and their neighbours were comfortable with having hives in the vicinity. Several restrictions in the proposed bylaw include limits on the number of colonies, and a requirement for resident beekeepers to register with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture Apiculture Program. No other key beekeeping points were brought out for much discussion, Hark says. “I think it was just a matter of a formality in discussing the electric fencing. “But, they don’t make you electric fence your fruit trees, your garbage cans or your livestock, so why insist that you have to do your honeybees?” She is aware of only two municipalities in the province, Williams Lake and Fernie, which currently require this type of enclosure. Foundation of health care bequeathed
South Cariboo Health Foundation (SCHF) was bequeathed $30,000 in the estate of longtime Canim Lake resident, Jens Kristensen, who passed away on Nov. 5, 2011. SCHF chair Mary Shennum notes the funds are designated to be split evenly, $15,000 for the 100 Mile House District General Hospital and $15,000 to go to Mill Site Lodge. “We are really fortunate that we were the beneficiaries of Mr. Kristensen’s generosity, so we can pass this on for the community’s benefit. “When people in the community leave donations through estate planning, they
leave behind a legacy of health-care improvements.” The cheque was handed over to SCHF by Gordon Kellett, Kristensen’s estate executor and longtime family friend.

Successful rodeo weekend
By Katie McCullough Under the direction of Wayne Griffith and Bonnie Stanke, the 2014 Clinton May Ball Parade was a great success, with a lot of entries and very nice weather. It was great to see so many floats, and different businesses and community organizations participating. The entry that travelled the farthest was the little wagon from the Cloverdale Rodeo. They have been a part of our parade many times. The good weather held out for the rodeo on Saturday. Clinton Ag Association president Jane Munro was in charge of the rodeo weekend along with her many volunteers and Ag members, and although the numbers have not all been tallied, everything ran smoothly and was a success. There were a record number of entries in the rodeo this year with several locals competing. Clinton residents Russell Allison and
However, the rodeo weekend ended on a bit of a negative note. On Sunday evening, someone drove into the rodeo arena in a pickup truck and spun donuts all over the new ground in the arena. The ruts they dug did a considerable amount of damage. The incident is being investigated and the public is reminded the Clinton Rodeo Grounds is private property and such an act is considered vandalism. The new ground that had recently been put in to the arena took over a week’s worth of work, not to mention the time of all the contractors that did the work and easily equals more than $20,000 worth of upgrades. Rollie Higginbottom of Clinton has been involved in pack horse competitions and demonstrations for a long time. He has also been in a lot of Clinton Rodeo weekend parades.
Jim McColl were both money winners in junior breakaway and the team roping. Rob Dube won the packhorse race both days. It was a crowd pleaser with lot of excitement, including bucking pack horses. Attendance was good at the rodeo on Saturday, and very good for the dance featuring Barney and Dustin Bentall. The father-andson duo attracted fans

from far away as well as the usual rodeo dance crowd. The performance from the High Bar Gang, which is a Juno nominated bluegrass band that Barney is a part of was very enjoyable. There was a very large rodeo slack on Sunday, which meant the contestants had many people with them and led to a very busy
pancake breakfast. The slack ran almost until the rodeo performance at 1 p.m. and the good weather held out until the rodeo was almost over. The Clinton 4H Club looked after the rodeo gate on Saturday and the Clinton Lions Club looked after the gate on Sunday. The Clinton Ag thanks both groups for their hours of hard work.

Most of the 17 violinists, violists and cellists are current students of Dr. Wolfe. They were joined by three former students from Kelowna. The afternoon concert was a demonstration of the Suzuki approach to musical learning. Just as a child learns to speak before learning to read, learning music by ear is emphasized over reading musical notation in early Suzuki lessons. The concert opened

Eagles fly at track meet
Five Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School athletes were on their marks at a track meet in Prince George, May 22-23. Grade 8 students Courtney Cave, Reid Collinson, Ashley Holyk and Lydia Kinasewich, and Grade 9 student Caily Mellott, competed in a number of events at the North Central High School Zone Meet at Masich Place Stadium. In the combined team score, based on points accumulated throughout different events, PSO won second place in bantam, and third in juvenile. Coach Lori Meville says she was really impressed with the dedication and determination of all the PSO athletes, even when they had to race against athletes in higher levels. “They had terrific

results for such a short training season and small team.” In the 100-metre bantam girls final, which featured eight runners, Cave finished third (14.91 seconds), Kinasewich finished fourth (14.95) and Holyk was right behind in fifth (15.36). All three improved their times from the preliminary round.
The girls 200m dash saw Cave in third (31.11) and Kinasewich in fourth (32.19). In the girls 80m hurtles, Holyk finished second (17.11); Cave came in fifth (18.08); and Kinasewich sixth (18.23). Cave completed the 1500m steeplechase in 8:33.49, which was good enough for second place and earned PSO

Capital project The Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District board approved the Interior Health Authority request for $81,600 for the replacement of picture archiving and communication systems in CaribooChilcotin hospitals. Support letter The directors approved provision of a letter of support for an application from the Interlakes Economic Association to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) for funding for a farmers’ market. Financial information The board approved

In the 80m hurdles, Mellott ran and jumped, and ran and jumped, to second place (16.68). In high jump, Mellott cleared the bar at 1.15m, which was good enough for third. In long jump, Mellott finished second (3.53m). Collinson was the only PSO boys bantam competitor. In the 400m run, he finished second (1:21.25). In the 800m run, he finished second (3:08.13). As the only competitor in the field, he ran the 3000m in 13:32.97; the 100m hurdles in 23.05; and the 1500m steeplechase in 7:14.93

Players recognized for achievements By Crystal Makaro The wind up party for the 2013/14 season of the Watch Lake Dart League was held May 1. Awards were given out to the members for their performance this season. Rick Lunsted was awarded top man of the year, men’s high finish score with a 103, and men’s most scores over 85 with 118. The men’s high single score went to Jim Antosh for his score of 171. Lou Stevens was named top lady of the
year, and Anna Marie Sward took home the prizes for lady’s high single score with a 140, lady’s high finish score a 59, and lady’s most scores over 85 with 28. The Steve Dubrovay Memorial Trophy for Fellowship was awarded to Ross Clark. Prize money was also received by all of the regular players in winning order – Lunsted, Stevens, Roy Ramsey, Rolly Rupertus, Brian Thatcher, Sward, Dorothy Clark, R.
Clark, Dorothy Buss, Lynda Esau, Iris Ramsey, Carolynne Swansborough, Gary Gerrard, Antosh, Dan Grant, Naomi Bishop, Ralph Barnett and Shelley Barnett who also won the draw for the nightly high score pot. Vet has cold head, warm heart

Dr. John Atkinson’s Shave a Vet for Cancer event at Lakeland Veterinary Clinic on May 26 brought in about $975 in donations for the Canadian Cancer Society. Atkinson says both the lead-up fundraising and the head-shaving event “went great.”
“[My life partner Charline Marshall] served chili and cupcakes, and I think everybody had a smile on their faces, so that’s good.” Atkinson had a long mane of curly locks before it was buzzed off at the event by Katelynn Dowe. “My head is fuzzy. I surprised myself in the mirror when I went to
brush my teeth the next morning.” Further donations are still being collected at his vet practice in Lillooet, so the final
totals are not in yet. “Also, I was just camping with my kids and some friends from Victoria, and they all donated as well.”
Local veterinarian Dr. John Atkinson had his head shaved by Katelynn Dowe at Lakeland Veterinary Clinic on May 26. He raised about $975 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Relay for Life jam packed
All the planning work is paying off and things are falling into place for local Relay for Life organizers, but they’re still short on volunteers and, of course, looking for more teams to join in the fun. The nation-wide fundraiser for cancer research is taking place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Centennial Park in 100 Mile House on June 7. “Everything looks good,” says organizer Alaina Fryer. “Basically, it’s just the volunteers we’re really still scrambling to find.” A schedule of events (found below) has been released and includes a good lineup of live entertainment and a number of active lifestyle and dancing demonstrations. Fryer asks people
to remember to bring canned goods to the park to be donated to the 100 Mile House Food Bank Society. They will also have luminary bags for sale for $5. A number of local teams are already registered online at the Canadian Cancer Society website, where people can search the 2014 100 Mile House Relay for Life page. Last year’s event, which saw people in communities from coast to coast participate in a fun and non-competitive 12-hour relay to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society, included 107 participants in 100 Mile House, and raised nearly $22,000. In 2013, Canada-wide, 161,746 people participated in 487 Relay For Life events and raised
