Only about 18 months into competitive climbing, his roots run deeper. Dorion started as a lad clambering along with his dad, an avid climber. In search of a sport to really throw himself into, he opted to give climbing a shot. Now a speed specialist, he doesn’t get home most days until around 8 p.m. He trains at the climbing wall five days a week and hits the gym the other two. Weighted pull ups are a favourite (nudge and wink) of the “torture exercises.”

Oak Bay’s senior girls soccer team finished third in B.C. “I’m ecstatic with third,” said coach Brent Garraway. “It’s a good accomplishment for the girls.” They lost to Delta in the semi final and defeated Panorama Ridge in the bronze medal game. Holly Goodacre continued her topscorer ways with five goals over the tournament. Teammate Caroline Crossley missed the bronze medal game to compete Holly Goodacre at track and field provincials. “I definitely wouldn’t be able to do what some of the girls were able to do,” Carraway said, clearly impressed with the players who participated in both provincial competitions held on the same weekend. With only four returning starters this season, it took some serious teamwork to get to that point. Much of the dedication came from an off-field goal, to raise $10,000 for cancer research. New OCP may be a developer’s dream The new Official Community Plan (OCP) draft reads like a developer’s wish list with all the expansion propaganda clichés included. Given council’s reckless densification proposals, they need to explain how they think they will protect existing residents’ privacy, views and sunlight from these over-developments. They must also explain how their excessive densification plans will maintain Oak Bay’s character. I don’t believe residents understand exactly what zoning policies of this magnitude will mean, what the real impacts will be, and how this will affect everyone. This OCP development document will open the floodgates to ad hoc, unplanned development and there will be no way to control it – or our growth as a community. The one per cent annual growth figure is particularly deceitful and deliberately misleading. How, for instance, would you restrict the number of applications for duplexes or laneway housing? How would you limit the number of large houses being divided into apartments? Would council tell some owners they can develop and exclude others? The same negative impacts on neighbours by allowing monster houses will occur – only in much larger proportions. Additionally, no more amenities will be provided to serve the new population – instead new and existing residents will pay increased user fees to contain use of the existing facilities. As we know, basement suites do not pay their way and there is no way, given Oak Bay’s budget and staffing limits, to enforce regulation. If there were, every municipality would do so. Throw in the illegal laneway housing, triplexes, 300 square foot units, etc. and taxes will have to be raised accordingly. Council’s next step will be to hurriedly change our zoning bylaw to reflect these OCP extensive densification objectives – opening Oak Bay up to rapid marketing of inappropriate, unwanted change. These development initiatives will significantly increase traffic, parked cars, commuters, illegal suites and other structures, noise, service cuts and also substantially increase taxes. All other communities that have introduced these OCP development objectives have experienced these impacts. It has been proven time and time again this type of densification does not lead to prosperity, instead it increases municipal budgets and lowers living standards. Anthony Mears Oak Bay

Centennial celebration Oak Bay United Church marks 100 years with a party

The cornerstone fulfills its role so well it is immoveable. There for 100 years, the congregation at Oak Bay United considered removing it to access a time capsule planted there when it was placed a century ago. It seems, however, integral to the structure and costly to remove. “They could find no evidence of a time capsule in there,” added Ken Adsett, co-ordinator of the centennial celebrations. Aside from the cost, the only reference found in their archives indicates the capsule could be anywhere along the corner pillar. But they’ll still hold a party to celebrate the centennial of placing that cornerstone. “Well have the normal service in the morning 10 to 11, then move outside under the Dogwood trees,” he said. “We’ll have a look at the cornerstone, rededicate it, then move down into the back garden for a barbecue,” Adsett said. “Maybe we’ll make our own little capsule and stash it away somewhere.” They’ll set a “modern record” during services that day welcoming 16 new members to the church. “Some are coming from other parts of the country and others joining for the first time,” Adsett said. Challenge accepted UrbaCity Challenge race set to break fundraising goal Laura Lavin News staff

Victoria’s version of the Amazing Race is taking place on June 8 with hundreds of local businesses participating. The UrbaCity Challenge is an urban adventure race and fundraiser for The Prostate Centre, and this year the course was designed by an Oak Bay native. Jonathan Willcocks of Vancouver’s Pinnacle Pursuits is thrilled to be at the helm as the “mastermind” behind the event. “I don’t want to give away too many specifics, but we have so many unbelievable draw prizes … the more people pledge, the higher level of draw prize they’re eligible for,” he said. Hosted by Maximus Canada since 2010, UrbaCity is marketed as a strategic adventure race that begins at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre and winds its way through downtown to various challenge stations. Teams of two and four are encouraged to raise minimum pledges to compete, while corporate team categories add to the playful competition. “There are so many ways to strategize – it makes it superfun,” Willcocks said. Teams can choose from brain, brawn or ultra racer categories, while corporate teams can register to face-off against one another. This year’s race also has a social media component, with pre-race questions being posted on their Facebook page. Willcocks is even taking part personally, posting photos of himself in a variety of Victoria locations. “It’s kind of a Where’s Waldo, except it’s Where’s Jono?” he said. “The first one to respond gets access to a challenge before the race,” he said. Contributions last year helped raise $15,000 for Victoria’s Prostate Centre. “This year, we have already achieved

“He’s very passionate about climbing and he works very hard,” said Kimanda Jarzebiak, chair of the not-forprofit society that runs the Boulders. At the recent national championships in Montreal, all 12 of the Boulders’ speed athletes earned places in the finals; 10 took home medals. While Dorion finished fourth,

As a member of the national team, Dorion plans to attend training camp in Canmore, Alta. the first week of July and has invites to attend World Cup competition on the Pacific Island of New Caledonia and the Pan Am Games in Mexico in November. “Climbing has one of the best communities, … I feel close to people all over the country,”

he says. “I’ve trained with some of the best climbers in the world.” Just last week Dorion’s coach Libor Hroza, who hopes to challenge the 15-metre wall world record, flew up the Boulders’ speed wall in six seconds. It wasn’t official or documented, but impressive enough with just his climbers watching. Boulders boasts the highest number of speed climbers on the national team. “I find it really useful

Quality, cost conscious key to restoration Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the second part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialized work and I’m often asked if I can recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand.

But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.

They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs would keep mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, would end up short-changed, resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions. Laura Ballance’s original plan was to have a sympathetic restoration

performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are no different than houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only major sheet metal components left was the roof, “A” pillars, rocker-panels, bulkhead and the two front frame rails and the rear section of the floor. I have heard the expression “better than new” a few times over the years and have often wondered how can it be better than new? But it can. Today’s restorations have improved with the help of new technology such as compression fit welding equipment, seam sealers

and paint products including epoxy primers, spray on polyester fillers and the waterborne color coats with a clear coat finish. These products are far superior to anything that came off the production line during the ‘60s. Rick Francoeur and his team at 360 always allow the customer to be in control and understand customer needs and expectations, even down to the smallest senti-

mental detail. However, sometimes they have to advise the client for their own benefit, sometimes financial, safety related or future re-sale value. Laura wanted the Mustang refinished metallic blue, all the rage during the ‘60s and the car she remembers. But if the car is to retain its value and to represent how it came off the production line as a rare T5, it had to be painted its original Ford Paint Code

Z, an interesting colour called Sauterne Gold Irid. This colour combined with a black interior and vinyl roof will make the car a real eye-catcher.

Grade 10 student Caroline Crossley, for example played four soccer games and ran two 100 metre relays and three 400 metre races over the weekend. A total of 17 Oak Bay High athletes cracked the top eight standings. Among them are Mick Taylor 400-metre champion, Lucas Petruzelli silver medalist in men’s pole vault and Danika Postle, second in triple jump. The men’s 4x400 relay was second in the province while the junior boys relay topped the podium with 4x100 gold. “We tend to do quite well in the relays. Green, freshly cut grass, healthy plants or flowers and generally tidy grounds go a long way when it comes to selling your home. Says Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres, typically not one to trot out clichés, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The state of a home’s outside property is literally the first thing people notice when they arrive for a showing or a drive-by viewing. “You can probably get a pass on your landscaping in the winter, but once spring and summer come, everybody notices. It’s a big deal to have a nice-looking property,” Ayres says. In terms of bang for the buck, spending $200 to $300 on bark mulch and potted plants can be one of the best investments a home seller can make to spruce up their lot, he adds. Niki Ottosen, owner of Gardener for Hire and a certified horticulturist, often gets phone calls from homeowners or real estate agents looking for help tidying up homes before they’re put on the market. “They want a quick cleanup and they want ideas on how to make it look good before they take pictures,” she says. For simple freshen-ups, she advises clients to redefine the edges

things they enjoy more, not everyone will be interested or motivated to go to town on their yard, Ottosen says. “What I find is a lot of people find gardening overwhelming. They’re OK doing painting and stuff, but

when it comes to gardening (it seems like) a lot of work. It’s hard work and if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and double your workload. But with a few little trade secrets it can make your work easier.” Some homeowners don’t know how to get started so they don’t want to get started, she says. “We do know the short cuts and know how to do it really fast. And after, people are very thankful for the help.” That fact – not to mention Greater Victoria’s mild climate – has helped the local residential and commercial gardening and landscaping industry blossom in recent years. Ayres, an admitted “non-gardener,” has a go-to landscaper he works with on a regular basis for situations where the homeowner may not wish to tackle the job, or on vacated properties for sale that need to be maintained. While a neat and tidy lot is a must, there’s a fine line between having a nice garden and one that looks like way too much work, he says. “Having too elaborate a garden might turn some people off. But you might also get someone who sees it as a real plus.” Ottosen agrees. “When they’re looking to buy a home, people look for what they have to do. If the gardening part of it is already done, it’s a weight off of them,” she says.
