Colwood couple faces cruelty charge in dog beating Pit bull cross in critical condition when taken into care by SPCA Arnold Lim News staff
“From a student perspective it is not an easy three years. You are finding yourself and figuring out who you are,” said McDowell-Powlowski, 17. “It’s incredible. Any teacher, any administrator, you are able to approach them and get help whenever you need. The faculty are the most inspirational people and you always have someone to look up to and go to. We wouldn’t be here at grad without the amazing staff.”
Criminal charges have been recommended against a Colwood couple in a case alleging the beating of their family dog back in April. A pit bull cross named Bryn that came into the care of the B.C. SPCA on April 1 had her head split open, a tooth broken off, a front leg broken and a deep laceration under its front leg. “It was pretty horrific. It was bluntforce trauma to the head,” SPCA spokesperson Lorrie Chortyk said of the injuries. “When she first came in, we were concerned she wouldn’t be able to walk again, but they have done a lot of veterinary treatment now. Unfortunately, animal abuse is not rare, but the level of brutality in this case was quite shocking.” Joseph White and Elizabeth Johnston will hear the charges against them when they make their first appearance in the Western Communities Courthouse at 9 a.m. on June 26. The charges relate to the attack itself, letting the dog suffer without medical attention and wilfully neglecting providing care for the dog, said B.C. SPCA constable Erika Paul. Criminal code convictions on animal cruelty charges have punishment ranging from fines to prohibition of owning animals to jail time or a combination.

Belmont valedictorian Molly McDowell-Powlowski will be graduating alongside approximately 400 other Grade 12 students at ceremonies tomorrow (June 7) at the University of Victoria. Her high school experience has taught her a lot, she says.
Class of 2014 ready to say so long A multi-talented group of Belmont students prepare for the next stage of life Arnold Lim News staff
Molly McDowell-Powlowski leaves Belmont secondary with mixed emotions. It hasn’t always been easy, but the soonto-be graduate said her three years at the school are a collective experience she will always remember. “Even though we are all nervous and kind of scared in what comes next, from the students’ perspective it is great to finally see the fruits of our labour,” she says. “To see that community at the end of
it, that is a great feeling.” The school valedictorian leads Belmont’s 2014 graduating class into tomorrow’s (June 7) ceremony at the University of Victoria, leaving behind a faculty and staff she says taught her not only the value of academics, but community. Students and teachers working together on initiatives such as the food drive 10,000 Tonight – roughly 20,000 items were collected for the Goldstream Food Bank last December – were also important pieces of her education, she adds.

Skin reaction causes call for education
IN BRIEF
Hogweed or cow parsnip? There’s some major differences between plants
Picnic planned for disability group
Two boys who developed a skin reaction from a plant species they were clearing near their school in Metchosin can feel lucky it wasn’t giant hogweed. The plants in question, which had grown in a Garry oak meadow on the edge of the West-Mont Montessori School grounds, turned out to be cow parsnip, or Heracleum maximum. It’s a native species and member of the carrot family that has mild photoreactive properties, meaning its secretions can cause minor Don Descoteau irritation or blistering in Reporting people with more sensitive skin. Cow parsnip, although generally much smaller and featuring different physical characteristics, resembles giant hogweed. That invasive species contains a highly toxic sap on its leaves and stem hairs which can cause hypersensitivity to the sun if contacted on the skin. Both have umbrella-like clusters of white flowers at the end of long stems, but the leaves are different and hogweed can grow to five or six metres high, compare to a maximum of about two metres for cow parsnip. Rachelle McElroy is executive direc-

The public is invited to a free picnic June 12 where they can meet members of the Intermunicipal Advisory Committee on Disability Issues. Beverages and barbecue items will be provided at Metchosin Community House, 4430 Happy Valley Rd, from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. If weather doesn’t co-operate the picnic will be held inside the building. RSVP by calling Marnie Essery at 250-474-5939, or email iacdisabilityissues@gmail.com.

They can grow to six metres. tor with the Saanich-based Coastal Invasive Species Committee, which works with municipal and regional jurisdictions to combat invasive species here. She said one of their subcontractors visited the school and treated the plants with a herbicide, a rare move given that cow parsnip is native, but one taken due to the reaction it caused. While the boys did suffer some discomfort, she said the incident – and the time of year – provide a good oppor-
tunity to learn the difference between cow parsnip and the dreaded giant hogweed, and to identify other invasive species or potentially harmful plants. “I think the message here is that not all plants are created equal,” she said. “It’s important, as part of environmental education and to know for yourself, about certain types of plants.” Private property owners such as the school are responsible for taking care of their own land, McElroy said. On public land, the various municipal and regional jurisdictions, working with Coastal ISC contractors, have combined to do a good job of controlling hogweed in the region, she said. While her group fields many calls at this time of year from people either reporting hogweed or asking questions about what they might have discovered, most often the plant in question is cow parsnip or one of several similar looking native plants. Volunteer Peter Giles of Metchosin, who helps tend the vegetable and flower gardens at the Montessori school, asked the boys to cut the tops off the plants in question and put them in a bucket. He initially thought they were Queen Anne’s lace, a form of wild carrot, but was surprised at the reaction the boys had. “For a novice like myself, there’s a three or four other things it could look like,” he said. For more information on differences between the plants watch a YouTube video by the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver at bit.ly/1uirpeL, visit coastalisc.com and click on invasive species, or call 250-857-2472. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Goldstream’s great outdoors gets more active New playground already a hit with kids, families
this playground is low-impact and there is no concrete pillars going into the ground. We didn’t want to impact any of the trees.” As an example, cedar from Qualicum Beach was brought in to make the split-rail fences that sit on cement blocks instead of being piled into the ground. “A park of this nature is deserving of this facility,” Ministry of Environment spokesperson Kirby Villeneuve said of the project, which was completed at a cost of about $220,000. “It is long overdue. The fact we didn’t have one here 10 years ago is a head-scratcher for me.” The playground was added to Goldstream –the second-busiest provincial campground on Vancouver Island, behind Rathtrevor in Parksville – based on a campground user survey. “It was an overwhelming response for wanting this type of facility,” Villeneuve said, noting that 800 responses were received. “It keeps kids busy, keeps parents happy and adds to the overall experience here at Goldstream.” There may be more improvements coming as well. A kids mountain biking facility with a figure-eight track and a trail with basic biking obstacles are potentially on the horizon. Carswell hopes to see many locals visit the park, adding many Greater Victoria residents still don’t

Goldstream Park has added it’s newest amenity, an eightpiece playground joining a host of outdoor activities at the 200plus site provincial campground. Situated almost dead centre in the campground, the equipment received a good workout in its first full week of use after being completed May 23, said park operations contractor Rick Carswell. “Every table was full, every bench was full and every piece of equipment had 10 kids on it,” he said. “To see that and the families interacting with each other, that’s what it is all about. It put a huge smile on my face. This is finally what this park needs.” Situated next to the popular amphitheatre, which has begun hosting free children’s activities seven days a week, the playground was installed over a clearing. No Douglas fir trees were taken down during construction, which was undertaken with an eye on protecting the root system of nearby trees. “This was the perfect area for it,” said Carswell. “Everything on
know the campsite exists. “I have so many people who live in Langford and graduated out of Belmont that don’t even know it is here,” he said. “The park is for the people, we want them to come out and enjoy it.” For more information on the Goldstream campground visit naturehouse.ca. alim@vicnews.com

Bryn, a pit bull cross, rests at a foster home after surgery. She was found in critical condition in April, the victim of an alleged beating at the hands of her owners in Colwood, who now face cruelty charges.
Attacked dog recovering well in local foster home Continued from Page A1
Paul couldn’t release all the details of the case, but confirmed the alleged attack was carried out with an instrument. She said the owners called an animal control agency to collect the dog, but the worker tipped off the SPCA to the injuries to the canine, estimated in age at three or four. Bryn could hardly stand or move and medical attention was not sought for the injured animal until the SPCA became aware and rushed her to emergency, almost 24 hours after the initial injuries occurred. The dog has since undergone dental surgery to remove the damaged tooth, with one more surgery to come. She is being cared for at a foster home.

“She is on the long road to recovery, but she hasn’t made the finish line yet,” Paul said. “We are told she is an absolute sweetheart and a popular dog in the neighbourhood where she is being fostered.” Bryn has not been medically cleared yet, despite more than two months passing since the attack, but will be available for adoption once she is back in good health. “When there are cases of sheer physical violence on an animal, those cases are scary. When you see (those) situations you know that humans are at risk as well,” Chortyk said. The B.C. SPCA investigates about 8,000 cases of animal abuse a year, including several hundred on Vancouver Island. alim@vicnews.com

The 400 or so students who will graduate from Belmont this year are the second-to-last class to graduate from the existing school building. The school moves to a new location nearby for the 2015-2016 year. “The neat thing about this year is they have been here for three years and I will have been here for three years, so we are going to be graduating together,” said principal Ray Miller, laughing. “The only problem is I will be back in September and they (won’t be).” Besides that special connection, he feels mixed emotions seeing the students, many of whom he knows by name, start the next chapter of their lives. “This has been an amazing experience as an educator, to see the last three years of their education pathway,” he said. “The system is designed for a lot of creativity and choice and that is what we typically see, students finding their passion and finding their dreams.” McDowellPowlowski, too, is proud of the students she’ll graduate beside and looks forward to seeing what the future holds. “It is through your peers you can really find yourself. My friends are my role models – these are the people who have such caring hearts. “What I have seen from so many Belmont students, when they put their passion and hearts into something, (they are) unstoppable. I am honoured to represent this group of people, because I know what is in store for them is an amazing, bright future. It is an amazing thing to see where it all starts.” Two ceremonies happen for Belmont students tomorrow at the Farquhar Auditorium at UVic, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m. alim@vicnews.com

Canada played a big part in the June 6 recalls invasion, with Canadian troops the day the tides among the Britishof war shifted led forces who stormed Juno Beach, one of five landing places along 80 kilometres of shoreline in Normandy. Among their ranks were soldiers from Greater Victoria and those who have since settled in our corner of the world. Throughout the war, the Soviet Union continually put great pressure on its allies to land in France, as it was doing the heavy lifting on the eastern front. When the Allied forces finally executed their year of planning with Operation Overlord, not everything worked out as hoped, but on the whole the invasion was a success. It took a month or so of hard fighting to truly establish a significant presence in France, but from then on, it was simply a matter of time before the Germans conceded defeat, as they were stretched due to troubles on the eastern front. But a formidable foe they remained for some time. If D-Day had been a failure, the Germans would have likely fought on for much longer. The cost in lives lost and in the intentional wiping out of Jews and other minority groups would have persisted for even more horrific years. D-Day remains a truly historic day 70 years later, though most of the troops who fought in that battle and survived have since passed away. Those of us too young to remember that day, it’s vital not to forget. Our way of life can be traced back to the tragedies and triumphs that scarred the coast of France seven decades ago.

Have a sweet time at Strawberry Tea Annual event a fundraiser plus a social gathering for volunteers
ANNIVERSARY PARTY June 7th

It’s tea time in Colwood. Twenty-four large cakes, 12 flats of strawberries, “lots” of whipped cream and hundreds of cups of tea served in fine China will feed the masses tomorrow (June 7) during the 31st annual Church of the Advent Craft Fair & Strawberry Tea. “It is really very sweet,” said Donna Brandle, one of the organizers. “(The event) is based on friendship, longevity and meeting new people.” She’s one of several people around since the inception of the function, which started with a group of young mothers looking to raise money for a church nursery, Brandle said. Today, in addition to the traditional strawberry shortcake and tea, the event includes a craft and artisan element, with 21 local crafters selling wares from pottery and woodworking, to various cards and weaving products. “It has really had a long his-

Committee members have been raising funds for youth programs and church outreach programs with the tea and craft fair for 31 years, she added. The Strawberry Tea served about 300 people last year and

Quality, cost conscious key to restoration Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the second part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialized work and I’m often asked if I can recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand.
‘‘
The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating..
’’
Nigel Matthews
But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.
They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs would keep mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, would end up short-changed, resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions. Laura Ballance’s original plan was to have a sympathetic restoration
performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are no different than houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only major sheet metal components left was the roof, “A” pillars, rocker-panels, bulkhead and the two front frame rails and the rear section of the floor. I have heard the expression “better than new” a few times over the years and have often wondered how can it be better than new? But it can. Today’s restorations have improved with the help of new technology such as compression fit welding equipment, seam sealers
and paint products including epoxy primers, spray on polyester fillers and the waterborne color coats with a clear coat finish. These products are far superior to anything that came off the production line during the ‘60s. Rick Francoeur and his team at 360 always allow the customer to be in control and understand customer needs and expectations, even down to the smallest senti-
mental detail. However, sometimes they have to advise the client for their own benefit, sometimes financial, safety related or future re-sale value. Laura wanted the Mustang refinished metallic blue, all the rage during the ‘60s and the car she remembers. But if the car is to retain its value and to represent how it came off the production line as a rare T5, it had to be painted its original Ford Paint Code
Z, an interesting colour called Sauterne Gold Irid. This colour combined with a black interior and vinyl roof will make the car a real eye-catcher.
Next week we will look into the mechanical component restoration and exterior trim replacement. Nigel Matthews is the director of sales and marketing for Hagerty Insurance Canada. nmatthews@hagerty.com

Curbers: dedicated to separating you and cash

needs the cash urgently for one reason or another. He always have a story about the vehicle that sounds reasonable, given that the buyer is really only interested in the car, not the story. However, sometimes there will be an elaborate yarn designed to elicit an emotional reaction; for example, he’s selling for his dad’s widow, his kid is going back to the home country for a visit. This is a way they can “bridge” the registration – sell a vehicle registered to someone else. The only way to reach him is by cell phone, he’s slippery about providing details and his availability. Curbers often lurk online and in the small print of classified advertising sections. But no matter where they choose to advertise their cars for sale, their driving desire is to make you a bad deal dressed as a good one. In the next two weeks, we’re going to take a look first at a typical curber profile then tell you about the activities of some specific conmen known to the authorities. It is hoped that this information will ensure you won’t fall foul of these low-lifers. I’m indebted to the Vehicle Sales Authority for providing the research necessary for me to furnish with this advice. I guess I’ve always had a cartoonish image of what a curber looks like but the VSA put me straight on that notion. Typically, the curber is a male, 45 or older but they can come in all ages, shapes and sizes. Frequently, they have a ‘your neighbour’ look, avoiding anything flashy in appearance that might draw attention. Sometimes dresses like a mechanic or labourer who

Rebels host junior football signing day, help out too Area minor football players were in the spotlight on the Goudy Field turf in Langford on Sunday, but some larger counterparts were being celebrated as well nearby. The Westshore Rebels held their national

Not only did the Rebels players ink their cards for the upcoming season, some helped out by working as the sideline sticks crew and running water to the pre-atom, atom and pee wee division players, who were thrilled to be hanging with young men who will represent the Capital Region on the gridiron this season in B.C. Coach Didmon steps down from Grizzlies Hockey club’s GM Brad Knight to handle both duties Don Descoteau News staff
The Victoria Grizzlies announced Tuesday that Craig Didmon has stepped down as head coach of the B.C. Hockey League club, to be replaced by general manager Brad Knight. Knight indicated the club may treat the move almost as a leave of absence for Didmon, who finished the 2013-14 season as head coach after replacing Bill Bestwick in December. “Craig indicated a month ago he was thinking of taking a Grizzlies GM Brad year off to go spend Knight spoke to Craig some time with his Didmon previously family,” said Knight, about the coach taking who only took over a year off the job. the GM job in April. “He’s still got a good relationship with the team.” Knight had nothing but good things to say for Didmon, who has coached at various levels in Greater Victoria. “it’s a real sad day for the organization with Craig stepping down. But on the other side of it, they say when someone leaves they leave the door open for someone else. We’re hoping to promote a local coach (up to the Junior A level). The team is in the process of interviewing potential assistant coaches, Knight said. Scott Hawthorne will remain as defence coach and video analysis expert, but a new coach will help Knight out with the offence. Roster-wise, the team has 12 returning players and six others committed, Knight said. As well, a new team captain has been selected and will be announced soon. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Even he was a bit taken back during senior’s day play Monday, when the club installed jumbo eight-inch holes on each green to accompany the regular four-inch diameter cups. “It is a totally different challenge,” he said of the larger holes, part of a move being considered by the club as a way to attract new golfers and help improve the scores of novices. “You get over confident and over aggressive and I found myself missing the hole. I showed them more respect on the back nine and did better.” Soberg, who plays three times a week on average, liked how the

change made his regular weekly game more challenging. “The whole secret of golf is to make it fun and this is another way to make it fun and increase the challenge. Not that golf needs more challenges but it adds variety to the different games we play.” Metchosin head professional Jeff Dinn said the club gave the larger cups a one-day trial to see what the response might be. They’re looking at swapping out the regular cups as often as once or twice a week starting in July, he said. The idea came to club owner Grant West when he was watching the news one day and saw a club in Langley using the bigger cups. “He saw the people smiling and playing quicker and decided we should give it a try,” Dinn said.
The Metchosin club wasn’t the only one on the West Shore to give the bigger holes a shot this week. Highland Pacific installed the eight-inch cups early this week and left them in, allowing golfers to play either sized cup on every hole. “It’s been going pretty good. We’ve been getting some good reviews,” said club pro Warren Reeves. “We put them out for men’s and ladies nights, which are both team games.” The club tried the large holes a couple of years ago, Reeves said, and decided to give them another go. For details about the program, call Metchosin at 250-478-3266 (metchosingolfcourse.com) or Highland Pacific at 250-478-4653 (highlandpacificgolf.com). – with files from Arnold Lim editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Hannah as an inspiration Artist Paul Archer of Langford painted this mural of Hannah Day after hearing she would be returning home to Langford from Vancouver Children’s Hospital. Archer airbrushed the 12-foot high by 15-foot wide mural of Hannah, 4, on canvas donated from General Paints. He started at midnight May 31, worked part of the night and continued most of the next day to have it ready for the Day family’s visit on Sunday. Archer hopes to find a new home for the mural, perhaps a building or a business, to provide inspiration for other parents and children suffering from life-threatening disease.

Q: WHAT CAN I DO TO SPRUCE UP MY YARD WHEN SELLING MY HOME? Scrub away the dirt – Clean moss-covered or stained pathways or concrete areas with a power washer, and use it on outside walls too, if not painting the house. Freshen up the colour – Put a coat of paint on arbors, fences and gates and other wooden elements to cross that off the buyers’ to-do list See your yard from the inside out – View sight lines to the garden and grounds from inside. Place tasteful garden art in prominent places near windows; perhaps colourco-ordinate the item with interior decorations. Stage your patio – Set outdoor tables with place mats, and attractive plates and flatware, as if guests were coming over. Do you have a homebuying or selling story to share? Green, freshly cut grass, healthy plants or flowers and generally tidy grounds go a long way when it comes to selling your home. Says Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres, typically not one to trot out clichés, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The state of a home’s outside property is literally the first thing people notice when they arrive for a showing or a drive-by viewing. “You can probably get a pass on your landscaping in the winter, but once spring and summer come, everybody notices. It’s a big deal to have a nice-looking property,” Ayres says. In terms of bang for the buck, spending $200 to $300 on bark mulch and potted plants can be one of the best investments a home seller can make to spruce up their lot, he adds. Niki Ottosen, owner of Gardener for Hire and a certified horticulturist, often gets phone calls from homeowners or real estate agents looking for help tidying up homes before they’re put on the market. “They want a quick cleanup and they want ideas on how to make it look good before they take pictures,” she says. For simple freshen-ups, she advises clients to redefine the edges

Niki Ottosen, a certified horticulturalist, says something as simple as spreading fresh bark mulch in garden beds can enhance the overall look of the yard for home sellers. of garden beds, spend some time weeding and add some bark mulch to gardens or around plants. “It adds curb appeal and shows people that you take care of your place.” With people living busy lives and spending precious spare time on
things they enjoy more, not everyone will be interested or motivated to go to town on their yard, Ottosen says. “What I find is a lot of people find gardening overwhelming. They’re OK doing painting and stuff, but
when it comes to gardening (it seems like) a lot of work. It’s hard work and if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and double your workload. But with a few little trade secrets it can make your work easier.” Some homeowners don’t know how to get started so they don’t want to get started, she says. “We do know the short cuts and know how to do it really fast. And after, people are very thankful for the help.” That fact – not to mention Greater Victoria’s mild climate – has helped the local residential and commercial gardening and landscaping industry blossom in recent years. Ayres, an admitted “non-gardener,” has a go-to landscaper he works with on a regular basis for situations where the homeowner may not wish to tackle the job, or on vacated properties for sale that need to be maintained. While a neat and tidy lot is a must, there’s a fine line between having a nice garden and one that looks like way too much work, he says. “Having too elaborate a garden might turn some people off. But you might also get someone who sees it as a real plus.” Ottosen agrees. “When they’re looking to buy a home, people look for what they have to do. If the gardening part of it is already done, it’s a weight off of them,” she says. Ayres, the veteran Realtor, leaves home sellers with a simple plan: “If you’re trying to sell your home this spring or summer, keep your lawn green. Use your watering days.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com
