Dustin Mackenzie often rode along with his mom, Joanne, when she travelled in her mobility scooter. She was adamant that her 11-year-old only child always wear his helmet for these trips or when he was skateboarding or cycling – two of his favourite activities. But without Joanne’s knowledge, Dustin did not use his helmet on Saturday night when he went longboarding, even though his cousin Knight, 12, and a friend wore theirs. That decision proved fatal. Dustin was boarding downhill along Bevan Avenue, not far from his home, at about 10 p.m. when he took a spill near Cascade Street. Charges have been laid in relation to an incident on Tuesday in which a man was firing a gun from a townhouse unit on Bourquin Crescent. Justin James Dean Korelus, 23, appeared in court on Wednesday and was charged with assault with a weapon, careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm dangerous to the public, intentional discharge of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and two counts of uttering threats. Korelus, who has no prior criminal record according to the provincial court database, has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment and is next scheduled to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on July 2. Const. Ian MacDonald said the situation

was more harrowing than first reported. Police were called to a townhouse complex in the 33200 block of Bourquin Crescent at about 11:30 a.m., when family members who were in the suite with the man reported that he was holed up in his bedroom and had fired some shots. MacDonald said police officers, including members of the emergency response team, who first arrived on the scene had to take cover from flying bullets because the suspect was still shooting when they arrived. “Our members … on the scene were relying on their ballistic shields (for protection),” he said. Police estimate that the man fired anywhere from one dozen to two dozen rounds, many at walls and the ceiling. He said residents who were evacuated from the building into a waiting transit bus

were not in serious danger, as they were escorted by police out a back entrance – away from the residence where the man was barricaded. At points during the man’s rampage, he threw items from a balcony, including a computer and several rounds of live ammunition, MacDonald said. The man surrendered without further incident at about 1:20 p.m. MacDonald said when police entered the suite, they found four guns – a handgun, an assault-style rifle and two rifles – as well as ammunition and magazines. “The situation that APD officers and residents were placed in was extremely dangerous. The fact that nobody was injured by the numerous shots that were fired inside and outside the suspect’s residence is both incredible and fortunate,” MacDonald said.

Garden gala raises more than $80,000 The Evening in the Garden Gala held on May 31 at the Ramada Plaza raised over $84,235 â€“ with net proceeds of $51,414 â€“ for the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) and its six charity partners. The funds will support summer camps held by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and The Reach Gallery Museum, mentorship programs for at-risk kids by the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley and assist kids with development needs through the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. The City of Abbotsford is not currently participating in the Multi-Materials British Columbia (MMBC) program for curbside collection. MMBC is a provincially approved product stewardship program, created to regulate the recycling of all packaging and printed paper in BC. The City of Abbotsford will be reviewing options for joining the MMBC program, but will not participate until 2015 at the earliest.

The Annual Municipal Report will be available for public inspection during regular ofÂżce hours, excluding statutory holidays, from June 9, 2014, in the Finance & Corporate Services Department on the 6th Ă€oor of City Hall.

The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) announced on Thursday that it will move into the MSA Centennial Library at 33660 South Fraser Way. The ADBA has entered into a lease agreement with the City of Abbotsford to occupy the space, as well as providing meeting and activity spaces to community groups at reduced rates. Along with the ADBA office, the building will house the Abbotsford Art Council’s gallery and boutique. Opened on May 12, 1967, the MSA Centennial Library served the community for more than 40 years. It was closed on Nov. 2, 2012 and its contents moved to the new library, built as part of the renovation/ construction of Abbotsford Senior Secondary School. The ABDA states that the organization will immediately begin plans to rejuvenate the historic building, which backs on to Jubilee Park, while “making every effort to maintain the integrity of the historic value of the building.”

Restore last teachersâ€™ contract Iâ€™m writing in regards to the tiring and disappointing strike that is plaguing our schools. Â I am not choosing sides, nor will I because I believe both sides have a great deal of maturing to do, however, I recently heard some information that discouraged me. Â I was informed that the government reneged on the last contract that was signed. Â The teachersâ€™ union have taken the government to the Supreme Court twice and have won both times, yet the government has still not complied. Â My compromise would be for the government to give back to the teachers what was legally agreed upon in the last contract, and then see if the union steps up to do their share in getting this resolved. My grandfather, Ernie Green, survived. His mother, father, and sister did not. A horrible disaster. But at the Salvation Army mass funeral in Toronto, Edith Jacobs came from New York as part of a Sally Ann contingent. She re-connected with Ernie Green, whom she had known in England. A love blossomed. They eventually married. And so, out of this tragedy, my family exists. My grandparents, mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, nephew who spent their lives touch-

A quartet of friends is combining a few milestones into one upcoming event. Mike Woodard, Rob Montgomery, Timo Itkonen, and Richard Blaschek will dip their toes into the Pacific Ocean at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria on July 1, and plan to repeat that action in the Atlantic 54 days later in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The event is called Cycling4Water. Montgomery, who resides in Quebec, and Abbotsford’s Woodard had talked years earlier about riding across the country to celebrate turning 60 years old, but decided that “it shouldn’t just be a recreational ride,” said Woodard, “so we started looking for a cause.” Woodard and Montgomery will both turn 60 during the ride, while Mission’s Itkonen will celebrate his 63rd birthday. Blaschek, 50, is also

from Mission, and Woodard said is called “The Kid.” They decided they wanted to bring awareness to the Global Aid Network’s (GAiN) efforts to help build 60 deep-water wells in Africa, giving 60,000 villagers disease-free water. The group is trying to raise $510,000 (each well costs $8,500) through social media and partnerships with local organizations. To date, they have raised just over $53,000, with 13 wells pledged. The men are also sourcing funding to help with the estimated $12,000 to $15,000 the voyage will cost. So far, Abbotsford’s Fraserway RV has donated a support vehicle, and Columbia Cabinets is sponsoring the ride by paying to wrap the RV in signage. Liberal for new riding Liberal Party of Canada members can vote for the first-ever Liberal candidate in the newly formed riding of Mission - Matsqui - Fraser Canyon. The next federal election will be held in October 2015. The new riding includes the northernmost portion of Abbotsford, all of Mission and reaches up through the Interior, north of Lillooet and Ashcroft. The Liberal Party of Canada has issued a meeting to nominate a candidate on Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m. in the Cadet Building at Abbotsford Exhibition Park. Members of the party can vote beginning after the speeches at 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Yale students in Relay for Hope Students at Yale Secondary School helped support their community by participating in the Relay for Hope on May 31. Seven girls set out with a vision to fundraise money for the Abbotsford Community Services Meals on Wheels Program. Meals on Wheels delivers meals to senior citizens in need. As part of an assignment for their senior leadership class, they were given

the task of fundraising for their community. The 90-km ride took the students from Hope to Abbotsford. The girls persevered and fulfilled their vision and fundraised just under $1,000 for the cause. Though the ride was supposed to be a relay, all the students wanted to do the full distance and with parental support, they finished the full ride.

Workers on strike at Cascade Aerospace Unifor union members at Cascade Aerospace in Abbotsford began strike action as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The union issued notice of job action last Thursday and stated that a strike would begin if agreement on outstanding issues, such as benefits, could not be reached by June 4. Abbotsford-based Cascade Aerospace is the primary Department of National Defence (DND) contractor for repair and overhaul on the DND Hercules heavy transport plane fleet covering the Lockheed Martin C130 E, H and the new J models. Unifor Local 114 represents 440 workers at Cascade, including aircraft maintenance engineers, interior technicians, painters, stores, maintenance, planning clerks and sheet metal mechanics.

$42,000 for books

A l e x a n d e r Elementary in Abbotsford is the recipient of a $42,000 grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. The school is one of 20 across Canada and three in B.C. to receive a total of $1.5 million in grants from the Love of Reading Literacy Fund. The grants enable recipient schools to purchase books and education resources “in an effort to bolster literacy and transform school libraries,” said Heather Reisman, president of the foundation. A l e x a n d e r Elementary currently has 153 students with a library budget of $2,900, allowing for 1.5 books per student, according to school principal Donna Wright. She said the average age of the school’s books is 25 years. The grant will enable the school to transform its library over the next three years. The literacy fund was established in 2004 to address the underfunding of public elementary school libraries. To date, more than $15 million has been committed to 170 schools nationally.

Charities supported The Tycuda Group at Raymond James, Facet Advisors and RDM Lawyers recently presented a total of $16,457 to Canuck Place Childrenâ€™s Hospice, the Abbotsford Hospice Society and the Canadian Cancer Societyâ€™s Camp Goodtimes. The funds were raised from the Fraser Valley Spring Business Gala on May 8. The event featured a presentation by Kevin Oâ€™Leary, a venture capitalist and former cast member of the CBC TV series Dragonsâ€™ Den.

Donen to helm UFV men’s volleyball team

Kyle Donen boasts a uniquely broad volleyball skill set, with experience as a player, a coach and even a playby-play broadcaster. He'll bring all those experiences to bear in his latest gig – head coach of the University of the Fraser Valley men's volleyball squad. "It's a dream come true to have an opportunity to work at this level," Donen said. "Being able to do it at the college/university level is something that I've always wanted to do." T h e 26-yearo l d White R o c k native DONEN takes over for Greg Russell, who had helmed the Cascades since 2005 but whose contract was not renewed by UFV. The Cascades men's volleyballers won PacWest medals four straight years between 2007 and 2010, with a fourth-place finish at nationals in 2009, but didn't approach those heights in more recent years and missed the playoffs last season. Donen has a good feel for his personnel already – he served as an assistant coach with the UFV men over the season half of last season. "Some of the key pieces are returning, and it's a strong core," he said. "With the group last year, I think they beat every team at least once time. Unfortunately they weren't able to string together multiple wins against some of the teams they needed to, which would have really been the difference between making (the playoffs) and not making it. It's definitely a tight league. "But I don't see any reason we can't be successful. I'm hoping to try and change the mindset of some of these guys, and make them more driven to want to have that success and earn that berth to go to nationals this year." Donen played university volleyball for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack from 2006 to 2010. He was also a longtime member of the B.C. provincial program, and was part of the Canadian Jewish national volleyball squad that competed in Tel Aviv in 2009.

Donen has previously coached with White Rock's Seaside Volleyball Club and at Semiahmoo and Elgin Park secondaries.

Also an accomplished play-by-play broadcaster, he has been the voice of many volleyball championships over the past few years, includ-

ing last year’s Canada West men’s Final Four hosted by Trinity Western University. "I think you have a certain level of learning

as a player, but when you finally get a chance to watch it . . . from behind the mic, you kind of see the game in a different way," he

said. "I'm going to bring as much of that to my coaching as possible." UFV athletic director Rocky Olfert said Donen has "so many of the

qualities that we were looking for . . . He is very professional, wellprepared, and passionate about developing student athletes.”

Brandon Jobb and Scott McGrandle led the charge, both winning their respective weight classes in the senior men’s division. McGrandle, who trains out of the National Training Centre (NTC) in Montreal, won his third national title in the -81 kilogram category, rolling through the draw in impressive fashion. The last time I saw him at a tournament was November last year, and since then . . . Once he gets the grip, he can throw anybody. Not too many people can do it.” Three younger athletes from the Abbotsford Judo Club also registered podium finishes. Leo Goldberg brought home silver medals in the -55 kg class in two age divisions – U16 and U18. It’s an impressive accomplishment, but Goldberg was the reigning champ in the U16 category and was disappointed he didn’t defend that title. “The U18 medal was way better than my expectation – I was really happy about that,” he said. “But the U16 one . . . was a bit of a disappointment and left a bitter taste in my mouth. “It’s really motivating me (at practice) – I’m going to work 10 times harder.” Mitchell Wolfe won his first national medal, a silver in the U16 -60 kg class. In the final, he thought he’d won, but was disqualified on a penalty after stepping out of bounds. “It feels pretty good,” he said. “It was a good fight anyway, I lost it to a good guy.” Jeff Swadden took bronze in the U21 +100 kg category for the second straight year. He’d been aiming to upgrade the colour of his medal this time around, but suffered a couple of tough losses. “I think I definitely could have gotten gold, and I was close,” he said.

Quality and cost conscious classic car restoration is the key

Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the second part of his series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialist work and I’m often asked if I could recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand.

But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication, in Abbotsford. They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs kept mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, was short changed, resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer, mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions! Laura Ballance’s original plan was to have a sympathetic restoration performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are

no different from houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only major sheet metal components left was the roof, “A” pillars, rocker-panels, bulkhead, the two front frame rails and the rear section of the floor. I have heard the expression “better than new” a few times over the years and have often wondered how can it be better than new? But it can. Today’s restorations have improved with the help of new technology such as compression fit welding equipment, seam sealers and paint products including epoxy primers, spray on

polyester fillers and the waterborne colour coats with a clear-coat finish. These products are far superior to anything that came off the production line during the ’60s. Rick Francoeur and his team at 360 always allow the customer to be in control and understand customer needs and expectations, even down to the smallest sentimental detail. However, sometimes they have to advise the client for their own benefit, sometimes financial, safety related or future re-sale value. Laura wanted the Mustang refinished it its metallic blue, all the rage during the ‘60s and the car she remembers. But if the car is to retain its value and to represent how it came off the production line as a rare T5, it had to be painted its original Ford Paint Code Z, an interesting colour called Sauterne Gold Irid. This colour combined with a black interior and

Curbers often lurk online and in the small print of classified advertising sections. But no matter where they choose to advertise their cars for sale, their driving desire is to make you a bad deal dressed as a good one. In the next two weeks, we’re going to take a look first at a typical curber profile then tell you about the activities of some specific con men known to the authorities. It is hoped that this information will ensure you won’t fall foul of these low-lifers. I’m indebted to the Vehicle Sales Authority for providing the research necessary for me to furnish you with this advice. I guess I’ve always had a cartoonish image of what a curber looks like, but the VSA put me straight on that notion. Typically, the curber is a male, 45 or older, but they can come in all ages, shapes and sizes. Frequently, they have a ‘your neighbour’ look, avoiding anything flashy in appearance that might draw attention. Sometimes dressing like a mechanic or labourer who needs the cash urgently for one reason or another. He always has a story about the vehicle that sounds reasonable, given that the buyer is really only interested in the car, not the story. However, sometimes there will be an elaborate yarn designed to elicit an emotional reaction; for example, he’s selling for his dad’s widow, his kid is going back to the home country for a visit. This is a way they can “bridge” the registration and sell a vehicle still registered in someone else’s name. The only way to reach him is by cellphone; he’s slippery about providing personal details. He will always be alone and usually has a pay-as-you-go phone. This enables him to switch SIM cards and use different numbers in ads for different cars. Here’s a tip: scan ads and see if any others read similarly to the one detailing the car you are interested in. The viewing location will always be a parking lot, most often at a mall or large grocery store parking lot, and occasionally at service stations. He will avoid going for a test drive, saying that he’s not allowed to let someone else drive the vehicle for insurance reasons or the vehicle doesn’t have enough gas. If there is a test drive, the radio will be turned up loud to drown out any mechanical problems. If the customer wants to take the vehicle for an inspection, the curber will accuse them of not trusting them! They’re always in a hurry

She is survived by her sister Barbara Paine, step children DeeDee Trill and Dennis Cunningham, step grandchildren Dennis, Rebecca and Stacey.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our quiet, beautiful soul, Chelsey Dykshoorn. She passed away tragically on June 1, 2014 at the age of 22 due to injuries sustained from a boating accident. Chelsey is survived by her mother Patti, father Rod, step-mother Betty-Ann; brother Kyle, sister Britney, step-sister Ashley, step-brother Brandon; grandparents Arnie and Fran; grandparents Joe and Johanna and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her grandparents Marinus and Corena Dykshoorn, and her aunt Nelvia. Chelsey was a quiet and gentle young woman, fun-loving and content with her small group of very close friends. She loved being at home with her sister, her dearest and best friend, with whom she shared everything. Their shared tattoos read; “I’ll be the wings that keep your head in the clouds” (Britney) and “I’ll be the anchor that keeps your feet on the ground” (Chelsey). He was a teacher, writer/poet artist, lover of nature, and a hard working man. Fred generously shared many of his endless creative works with family or friends; be it writings, poetry, salvage sculpture, cooking and gardening. He bids farewell to his partner “twin flame” Maria/Mary and extended family, Teresa, Tim and Aaron and their families. Bob passed away peacefully at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 ½ years, Donna; 2 sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob loved his family and loved to be with them - camping and fishing family sitting around a bonfire was one of his greatest pleasures. He was always there to lend a helping hand, not only to family but to his many friends as well. Bob loved walking around Mill Lake and seeing all the wildlife. He was a simple man with strong beliefs and lived his life around them. His family will miss our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and his cheery smile and laugh. It is with saddened hearts we announce that John Schofield passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Saviour on May 31, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carol; his devoted daughters, Lynn (Chris) van der Vlist, Mary May (Wiebe) de Jong, and Tracy (Devin) Nienow; and his 7 cherished grandchildren, Alex and Chelsea van der Vlist, Cassie, Michael and Brianna de Jong, Theresa Massicotte, and Jonathon Nienow. Born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England in 1933, John grew up an only child to loving parents during the Second World War, spending his time singing in the church choir and playing soccer for the school and the village teams. At the age of 17, he joined the RAF and was sent to Canada to the British Embassy in Ottawa. Soon after returning to England, he chose to immigrate back to Canada,

a country he had come to love. John joined the RCAF and it was during a posting to Comox, BC that he met the love of his life, Carol. They married, and soon after, their daughters entered the world and the 5 of them enjoyed the military life of travel and adventure.
