Students may stage their own protest today Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The student “pawns” in the contract dispute between the province and teachers are expected to make a bold move today. Students across B.C., including Campbell River, are being encouraged to walk out of school at 9 a.m. and to spend the day out of class protesting the dispute. “The students in British Columbia have been put in the middle of the labour dispute between the BCTF (B.C. Teachers’ Federation) and the government for our entire schooling. For some of us, that means our entire 13 years of education.” That’s just an excerpt from the new Facebook page “BC Student Walkout

for Students.” The student protest movement is being driven by social media which also includes the Twitter site @BCWalkout2014. Students are being asked to protest the entire school day and to make their own placards, “but make sure that what is said on them neither supports the BCTF nor the government.” In Campbell River, the student protest may take place at middle and secondary schools. As for the teachers, they continue rotating strikes around the province. The second strike day for the Campbell River school district is this Friday. Parents and guardians are being told to keep kids at home. For local updates from the board, visit www.sd72.bc.ca

cut off from its drinking water supply. “We should be looking at an emergency water supply in the event of an interruption,” Samson said at last week’s council meeting. “The interruption can be natural, it can be man-made, it can be mechanical – it can be for a number of reasons.” Samson said it’s important the city come up with a plan B. He suggested options that could Continued on Pg. 4
