A cougar that sent a woman running in fear Monday morning has been destroyed in Langford, while the potential of another in the area was being investigated. Several reports of cougar sightings, starting at approximately 6 a.m. that day, prompted B.C. conservation officer Peter Pauwels to investigate an area of the Galloping Goose Trail between Sooke Road and Jacklin Road, behind the Glen Lake Inn. One of them came from a woman who said the cougar chased her before she reported the incident to West Shore RCMP. “Cougars are active all year long; they can come at anytime,” Pauwels said. “We don’t usually get them this close into a busy urban area, however, and the behaviour of chasing a woman is very unusual.” The young adult male cat “looked a little thin,” he said, adding such erratic behaviour as it demonstrated can sometimes mean there is something wrong with the animal. Accompanied by two cougar hounds and their trainer, Pauwels found and destroyed the 80-pound cougar in a thicket of bushes along the creek bed at about 9 a.m. “Normally they stick to natural sources of prey,” he said.

Colwood elementary’s new playground promises to be more inclusive. Students and parents at the school are

raising funds for wheelchair-accessible equipment, which comes as good news to Kristine Chamberlain. Her eight-year-old daughter Savannah, who suffers from a severe type of epilepsy, is one of four wheelchair-bound students who may benefit from the redesigned playground area. “We need to make it happen. They are going out every recess and lunch and having nothing to do except sit in their wheelchairs,” Chamberlain said. “These are kids can’t get on the swing and with them there

Pink, green and purple waves were in evidence around Langford on Sunday as participants in the third annual Goddess Run took to the streets. The 1,760 women competing in the run/walk event had nearperfect conditions for the fivekilometre, 10K and half marathon distances. Lara Greaves of Victoria won the half marathon crown in a field of 230 with a time of one hour, 35 minutes and seven seconds. She crossed the line comfortably ahead of second-place finisher Yana Hempler of Saanich, who timed 1:35.41. Duncan’s Raisa David was another full minute back in third, while Cara Williams of Victoria was fourth in 1:38.20. PAC executive member Alison Dame said the project has been a long time coming. “We are a wheelchair friendly school, with completely flat levels with no (second floor),” she said. “We should have an accessible playground area. We should (already) have a playground like this.” Dame said there are students who have spent their entire elementary years at the school without anything on the playground to play with. The PAC hopes to raise $7,500 towards equipment. Ideas include a picnic table where children with disabilities can sit with friends, or a set of musical drums and chimes easily accessed by children in wheelchairs. They have raised more than $4,400 so far from the 198 students who collected pledges for Friday’s one-hour walk around the school property. The goal, Dame said, is to create an accessible amenity available to the entire community, not just Colwood elementary students and fundraising continues with a beer and burger night Sunday (June 8) at the Loghouse Pub on Millstream Road. The hope is to host the event every year, eventually raising enough money to remove the gravel rock in the playground area and update or add more wheelchair-accessible equipment. “I think the best part will be to see the kids having fun with their friends and playing, being able to see them being a kid like every other kid,” Chamberlain said. “My hope is that every playground in the future is an inclusive playground. Walkout won’t end job action It’s encouraging to see students from across the province stepping out and speaking up on the ongoing negotiations between their teachers and the provincial government. Many students are expected to walk out of class today (Wednesday) holding placards and pickets to remind both parties that the decisions they are making related to rotating strikes and teacher lockouts are having the greatest impact on their education. While we are thrilled to see non-voting age British Columbians show an interest in political matters, we feel the students’ direction is misguided and won’t accomplish much. The two sides will still go back to the bargaining table arguing over numbers and priorities. Today is the only day this week that no teacher in B.C. will be picketing – meaning all students from all schools in B.C. should be in class today. It also means that the students who participate in the walkout will miss two days of classes this week. With just a couple of weeks before finals, students of all skill levels need all the in-class time with teachers they can get to prepare themselves. One day per week of strikes is out of students’ control, but two days isn’t. We’re sure some students see the word “walkout” and treat it as an opportunity to skip classes. But we hope that’s not the case for most willing to risk losing another day of learning at such a crucial time of the school year. We hope the BCTF and the provincial government take note that students are ready and willing to walk. Even the threat of an organized walkout should be enough to remind the adults on both sides that students are being impacted the most in this dispute. Regardless of which side of the debate one happens to be on, no one wants to see this whole sorry affair drag on and put the education of our children at risk. And if you can help it by being in class when class is in session, that’s the best way of not risking your education. What do you think? If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true. A study published in Pediatrics magazine stated that approximately two-thirds of girls in grades 5 to 12 said pictures in magazines influence their image of an ideal body, and half of those girls stated the images made them feel they needed to lose weight. Doctored photos encourage people to turn to extremes, such as anorexia and bulimia, to try and make themselves look like the models in the photos. For a long while, I found myself thinking less highly of myself and the people around me because we didn’t look like Photoshopped, almost-anorexic models. I guess I’m still fooled by it, sometimes; there are days where I’m still trying to understand that these media messages are false and not something attainable. Society needs to take this message to heart. It’s time we woke up, faced the mirror and told ourselves we are already perfect. It’s time we realized that we are real people, and real people have flaws. Jordan Michelsen is a student at Belmont secondary.

Junior cricket on the pitch in Metchosin The Metchosin Cricket Club debuts its inaugural junior league this weekend, a development program for boys and girls ages six to 16. The club initiated the program to provide an opportunity for youth from the West Shore and Sooke to learn a new sport and stay active in summer. Practices and games are held at the Metchosin Cricket Ground, behind the municipal hall on Happy Valley Road. Evening practices began in mid-May and the opening games happen Saturday (June 7). Junior league organizer Rick Gardner says there’s still spots open for kids who want to get involved. With sponsorship of the league by Saunders Subaru, the season registration fees are $45 per person, $35 for a second sibling or a family rate of $100 for three or more players. Powerlifter keeps on rolling Darshan Gill’s leg-press feat the talk of West Shore gym Don Descoteau News staff

An old advertising slogan used to claim, “you’re not getting older, you’re getting better.” The same could be said for Darshan Singh Gill. The View Royal resident, who won world powerlifting gold in 2008 and owns multiple B.C. and national age group titles, just turned 77. He indirectly marked the occasion in the weight room at West Shore Parks and Recreation by leg pressing 1,100 pounds, an all-time personal best. The successful attempt, which saw Gill load up the machine with nine 45-pound plates on each side, had a somewhat theatrical flair, as a fellow lifting enthusiast sat atop the apparatus to add 235 pounds of weight. Gill pulled off five repetitions to show he could do it. “Even 50-year-old guys can’t do that. Even young kids can’t do that,” the usually modest Gill said afterward in an interview. Standing just under five-eight and carrying 206 well-toned pounds on his frame, the long-retired mill worker looks closer to 60 than 80. He’s been a regular at the Juan de Fuca gym for 20 years and works out five or six times a week, on average. He doesn’t think much about age, he said, although some days his body tells him he’s overdone it a bit. A rotator cuff injury sustained a while back is healing nicely, but will keep him out of this month’s provincial championships in Vancouver. “You have to just think positive. I think when I’m 90 I’ll still be lifting.” Gill has competed 30-plus years in powerlifting, which combines squats, bench press and deadlift, and usually includes a bench-press only competition. He broke his hip and knee in 1986 and was told at the time by his doctor he would be lucky to walk normally again, never mind powerlifting. Having worked hard on his physical conditioning, he largely ignored the doctor’s dim prognosis and was back competing after a couple of years. These days, fellow lifters marvel at Gill’s longevity and relative durability. “People ask me, ‘when you were young, were you stronger then?’ I say no,” he said. “In 1975, my squat was 350 pounds. When I was 65 (in 2002) my squat was over 500.” With the help of regular leg presses, which work a similar muscle group, he still squats more than 400 pounds. He also deadlifts at least 400 and the other day bench pressed 275, the same amount he lifted in winning his category at the 2013 B.C. championships last June. Gill, who hopes to be ready to compete again by the Fall Classic this November, enjoys the people he works out with at the rec centre and enjoys inspiring them to do more. “I love it. When you go there and you meet people, and you’re lifting, then lifting more, you see them and they’re happy,” he said. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Eye hazards in the backyard

Some day soon the rain will stop, and we will venture outdoors to do dour bit in making Victoria “the Garden City”. Before setting out to tame your own personal wilderness, stop and think about your eyes (and other body parts). Pruning and trimming can be hazardous. If you do splash a chemical in the eye, flush the eye immediately with vast, huge, enormous quantities of clean cold water; then go to Emergency if necessary. The good news is that eye protection is simple and inexpensive. Safety glasses and goggles that fit over prescription glasses are all that is required, and you can find them in your local hardware store. Our local eye surgeons would rather spend their weekends with their families than treating ocular injuries that are easily prevented. Have a happy and safe spring and summer.
