When police were able to get into the suite where a 23-year-old distraught man believed to be on drugs had barricaded himself after firing shots on Tuesday, they found several guns, as well as bullet holes in the walls and ceiling. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said one of the rounds had gone into a neighbouring suite that was occupied by two women. Families and friends are mourning the loss of six individuals who perished in a series of tragedies in Abbotsford and Mission over the weekend. Four of the losses were due to vehicle crashes, including two on Saturday on Highway 1 in Abbotsford. The first took place around noon, when a truck rolled over just east of the Sumas exit

Robert McDonald of RCMP Traffic Services said a commercial cube-style truck was travelling in the slow lane and then moved into the fast lane to allow oncoming traffic to merge. The driver then noticed that a 1997 GMC Yukon was swerving and then flipped onto its roof. The 44-year-old Maple Ridge woman driving the Yukon was airlifted to hospital, where she died from her injuries the following day.
Her two passengers were taken to hospital and released. The second fatality occurred just before 6 p.m. the same day on Highway 1, when a motorcyclist went off the road near Clearbrook Road. Multiple police officers, including members of the emergency response team, were on the scene, as were numerous police vehicles, ambulances and a firetruck. The Air One police helicopter circled the area. At points during the standoff, the man threw items from the balcony. It was all over by 1:20 p.m., when the man surrendered to police and was taken into custody. MacDonald said it is believed the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. It is not yet known what charges he could face.

A black bear spotted strolling through backyards in the area of Woodbine Crescent on Friday afternoon has been euthanized. Conservation officer Sgt. Steve Jacobi said the bruin had been relocated last year after entering into local neighbourhoods. He said they had received many calls through the last few weeks about the bear again entering people’s yards. It was also spotted near a gas station and a convenience store. “He was relocated last year … He was doing basically the same thing (this year) and we kind of gave him one chance to smarten up.” Jacobi said the bear’s behaviour did not change.”He’s lost all fear of people. A brief sojourn into the forgotten past Mark

Other Hand Standing in a somewhat crowded room last Wednesday I was approached by two women, one of whom exclaimed: Mark Rushton, you haven’t changed a bit. My first thought was: geeezzz, you mean I looked this old back in high school? The scene was a reunion marking the (reluctantly admitted) 50th year since I and 68 others graduated from Qualicum Beach High School. Since the district that fed QBHS is/was perhaps one of the longest and narrowest of any in the province, most of us rarely met outside of school. We were for the most part, except during classes, more the equivalent of ships passing in the night. Because our homes were widely separated, I tended to hang out with kids older or younger who lived nearby.
However, glancing at the few yearbooks on display, and a couple of class pictures in the reunion yearbook I did begin to recognize and vaguely remember some faces. I was surprised to be instantly recognized by a few who were already in the reception hall, only later to discover that a column of mine from a few months ago, with my relatively current photo, was stuck on the wall along with other memorabilia. I should also mention, particularly in reference to the “haven’t changed a bit” that in all the class pictures, and in the reunion group photo, I tower head and shoulders above most. Hard to forget the tallest, skinniest kid in class, I guess, and those characteristics haven’t changed despite the passing of half a century. While I like to think the ravages of time have been kind to me, there were many others in that room last week who, like fine wine, have aged remarkably well. One slim and very attractive woman came up to me and, as an introductory comment, said, “I read your bio (in the reunion booklet) and it sounds like you’ve had an interesting career.”

The class of ’64, it seems, did rather well for itself. Regrettably, a dozen of us never made it this far, and a glass was raised in their honour. Sitting with a wag over dinner, he commented following the toast that at our ages, pretty well every year from now on there will be at least one fewer of us. Kind of makes the prospect of a 60th reunion rather bleak. Thus the day after returning from the reunion I hooked a boat to a truck and my son and two grandkids spent the weekend fishing in the Coquihalla highlands. Get on with it
Another week has gone by with no contract resolution in sight. Being an “octogenarian high school drop-out,” I am coming to a bit of a slow boil. The negotiations for a new educational contract have been at a stalemate far too long.What are these “highly educated” negotiators doing about problem-solving? The approach seems to be “there is only one side to the story and it’s mine.” The first question they should ask themselves is: Do we have a problem? Can we work out a solution? If the answer is yes, get on with it! If no, find individuals who can. The government has
its hands tied because of funds available. The teachers should accept a settlement similar to what some of the other public service unions have settled for. Based on this type of settlement, teachers’ dollar increase will be higher because the percentage is based on a higher salary to start with. Let the students and teachers get on with education and school activites. What message are we sending to our young people? Conflict solves problems?As I heard so often in my younger days, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Just get on with it! Eric Myrholm Abbotsford

Your cartoon in the May 29 edition is an extreme example of bias. Whatever happened to objectivity in the press? This education conflict is not caused by just the teachers. Neither is the conflict only about teacher wages, though in your reporting that seems to be the only one you are willing to discuss. No mention of stripped contract or the government unwilling to let teachers even negotiate classroom size and composition. I guess your political view will continue to ignore those things. An Abbotsford student will undertake a 200-km-plus bicycle journey in honour of his father, raising money to combat cancer along the way. Taylor Rourke, 17, a Grade 11 student at W.J. Mouat Secondary, will participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a two-day cycling event taking place June 14 and 15. Rourke’s father passed away a year and a half ago after a long battle with cancer. As a way of honouring him, Rourke will participate this year on Team Orange, made up of five riders. Abbotsford Police are investigating two fast food restaurant robberies they are believe are related. The first took place at 3:35 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, when two men went to a McDonald’s restaurant in the 2100 block of Whatcom Road. One man went inside while the second kept watch outside. The suspect – in his 20s, over six feet tall and with a medium build – demanded cash from the manager, who was struck several times. On Friday, May 30 at 4:25 a.m., two men entered a McDonald’s in the 32900 block of South Fraser Way. They demanded cash from a 36-year-old manager and fled. The manager was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The suspects are in their 20s, one Caucasian and one possibly South Asian.

Quilts in the Valley
The Abbotsford Quilters’ Guild (AQG) presents “Quilts in the Valley” on Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7 at Tradex in Abbotsford. The show will feature more than 400 quilts and quilted objects, as well as a boutique, a large merchant mall, Quilts of Valour, challenge quilts, demos, children’s activities and two raffle quilts. The AQG, which has been in existence since the mid-1980s, last held the show three years ago, and the event is its major fundraiser for the next three years until the next quilt show. AQG donates about 350 quilts per year to hospitals and charities in Abbotsford and Mission. Quilts in the Valley runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Cost is $8. Local teams finished strong at the B.C. high school boys rugby championships, highlighted by a solid fifth-place result from the Robert Bateman Timberwolves. Bateman blew out the Earl Marriott Mariners, their longtime Fraser Valley rivals from South Surrey, 32-6 in the fifth/ sixth placing game at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park on Saturday afternoon, matching their highest finish at the provincial AAA tourney. “We were decimated by injuries,” said T-Wolves coach Dave Chambers, whose team had beaten crosstown rival Yale 29-10 to get to the fifth-place game. “But guys stepped up. It was a great culmination to the season. They played the way we’d been coaching – they played to their abilities and their understanding of the game.” Bateman got tries from Kolby Steen (2), Austen Zacher, Slayter Tonneson and Noah Jensen vs. the Mariners, while Gavin Rowell accounted for nine points on kicks. Kurtis Kirschner was named to the President’s 15 alltournament team. In other AAA action, the Yale Lions locked up seventh place with a blowout win of their own – they crushed Carson Graham of North Vancouver 40-22 behind tries from Noah Bain (2), President’s 15 selection Travis Murray, Surge Francis, Chris Combs and Josh Long. In the AA draw, the Rick Hansen Hurricanes wrapped up the tourney with a second straight win, beating L.V. Rogers of Nelson 20-14 in the 13th/14th placing game. Twin brothers Alex and Brandon Ho and Devin DaCosta scored tries, while Vishal Toor notched a convert and a penalty kick. Alex Ho was named to the President’s 15. The Abby Senior Panthers finished 16th in AA, dropping their finale 48-14 to G.W. Graham of Chilliwack. The Panthers got two tries from Grayson Marquardt and two converts from James Parker vs. G.W. Sunny skies greeted participants at the sixth annual Jumpstart Day, held Saturday at Canadian Tire in Abbotsford. The event was a fund-raiser for Jumpstart, a charity which provides financial assistance for families who can’t afford to enrol their kids in organized sport. Kids’ games, sports, face painting and a barbecue highlighted the local festivities, and approximately $1,600 was raised. “It was a perfect day for it,” enthused Mark Krawiec, general manager of Abbotsford’s Canadian Tire. “It was a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause.”

Jumpstart helped mom get her kids in the game where they had no family, things were not easy. “Life was quite a bit of a struggle for us,” she said. “And it always has been. “It took me a little while to get back to work and to get back in the swing of things after moving here. “We had what we needed to get by and that was it; there wasn’t room for anything extra. There was not even $5 to put towards sports.” With no registration fee to join a flag football league, she signed up all three boys. But eventually it was going to cost money to keep her kids in organized sport and

Growing up, sports were always a big part of Renee Doucette’s life. But when she moved to B.C. from Alberta in 2000 as a single mother with her three young sons Ryan, Ritchie and Reagan – who were between the ages of five and eight – times were tough. The boys’ father battled drug addiction which led to the couple breaking up and Renee moving west to start over. With their father not involved in their lives and moving to a place
dependence, strength, camaraderie and mentorship, all things she wanted to instill in her children. A school principal mentioned the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program as a way to help the family out. Jumpstart is a nationally registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids have the chance to get off the sidelines and into the game. According to a Vision Critical 2011 study, one in three Canadian families cannot afford to enrol their child in organized sport and

Tim Bertness of MEI, who was fourth in the senior boys decathlon last week, got onto the podium for bronze in the triple jump (12.25m), while Mouat’s Josh Adhemar of Mouat nabbed bronze in the senior boys 400m hurdles (57.38 seconds). Jordan York of MEI earned bronze in the Grade 8 boys 400m (56.56 seconds). A trio of relay teams also climbed the podium. Mouat’s 4x100m senior boys squad won silver (43.92 seconds), while MEI’s 4x400m girls squads fared very well – the Grade 8 crew won silver (4:31.54), while the junior girls took bronze (4:14.98).

Pauline Bergen went to be with her Lord June 1, 2014 at the age of 87. Thank you to all the staff at the Valhaven Home in Abbotsford who gave her wonderful loving care. She was predeceased by her father John Stobbe, mother Margaret, stepmother Susie, 10 siblings, 4 sister-in-laws, baby son Dennis, and husband Henry. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Chalmers on May 30th, 2014 in Abbotsford, BC, at 62 years of age. He was a loving, faithful husband of 42 years and a devoted father and grandfather (Opa). His greatest passion was spending time with his family and friends and was gifted with humour. Jim had a love for music and was a talented guitar player for over 50 years. Jim was predeceased by his father Charles (Ted), his mother Ethel (Frankie), and his sister Bonnie. He is survived by his wife Helen, son Clayton (Stefanie), daughter Kimberley (Garth), grandchildren Benjamin, Kaiden, Tyson and Evan, brothers Wayne (Julia), Kenny (Kim), sister Sharon (Wes) and brother and sister in-laws. He will also be greatly missed by his many family members and friends. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Friday, June 6th at 2 pm at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, Abbotsford. McKENZIE, Elsie May Elsie May McKenzie of Abbotsford, at the age of 75, passed away peacefully on May 28th, 2014 at Worthington Pavilion. Elsie May McKenzie (Nice) Born August 21, 1938 in London, England to Leslie and Florence Nice. She is one of 6 children, Ron, Anne, Paul, Debbie and Linda. The Nice family boarded The Queen Elizabeth Ship, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Christmas day, 1942. Elsie is survived by her loving husband Bob McKenzie, two sons Graham McKenzie and Scott McKenzie and daughter Kari McKenzie. Elsie is also survived by three daughter-inlaw’s, Kathy McKenzie, Shelley McKenzie and Coreen Jackson in addition to son in law Jerry Schmiegel. She loves spending time with her seven grandchildren Adyson, Cole, Sarah, Skye, Cade, Genevieve and Cameron. The Celebration of Life will be held at the Pentecostal Assembly Church, at 3145 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC on Thursday, June 5th at 11:00am. Graveside to follow. Mildred Jean Mildred Jean Taylor aged 93 passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2014. She is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Reah and Cathie as well her son Bob and their families. In addition to her three children she had 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lorne in 2006 at the age of 93 as well. Jean will be remembered for her involvement with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mission.
FRIESEN, Heinrich Heinrich Friesen, the eleventh of fourteen children, was born in Morris, Manitoba on November 7th, 1925. Eighty-eight years later, Hank died in the arms of his wife Shirley (Brown) Friesen on May 29, 2014 in Abbotsford, BC. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this November. He was predeceased by his first wife of 40 years, Mary (Dyck) Friesen, as well as all his siblings, with the exception of his younger brother, Abe Friesen of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He also leaves behind five daughters, nine grandchildren, seven great grand-children and 50 nieces and nephews. He was loved beyond measure. Through his hard work, generosity, optimism and humour, he left the world a better place. Donations can be made in Hank’s name to the Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC. His funeral will take place at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church in Mission, BC on June 7th, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dan Rempel officiating. He has left us with wonderful reminders of his quiet, gentle and loving ways and we will cherish those memories while missing the man that created them. His legacy and love will go on in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he adored and was so proud of. Lloyd was born in Vancouver and grew up in the autobody business working alongside of his father and then branching off on his own including teaching the autobody trade in Salmon Arm secondary school for 9 ½ years. He loved his hotrods and built a number of beautiful cars over time. He leaves behind to mourn, his wife Doreen, his brother Gary (Rosalie), sister Marilyn Lillies, sons Edward, Shawn (Cibele), Cory (Irene) Broadbent, daughters Maureen (Manfred) Sieg, Anita (Dave) Lautsch, Lisa Broadbent. Grandchildren, Josh (Jodi), Megan, Shaylene (Derek), Caitlin (Stuart), Erika (Elliott), Vanessa, Bianca, Dana, Rob, Amanda and Kelsey. Commercial energy City planning on how to manage growth
A
ccording to BC Statistics population projections, by the year 2036, Abbotsford will be home to 212,000 people. It’s a growth rate of approximately 50 per cent over the next quarter-century. So the question is not will the city grow, but rather how do you manage that growth? Issues such as land use planning, transit, densification and affordability all become increasingly important as the population expands – as does the need for commercial growth. “We need to find, somehow, about 40,000 jobs. There is always going to be that balance between lifestyle versus land use. Do we want people to have to travel east or west in order to find work?” asked Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman. But the need for commercial industry is twofold. It provides jobs for the growing population as well as services.
Add to the equation that Abbotsford is centrally located and serves a regional market, and commercial planning becomes even more important. In recent years, clusters of commercial and residential development have begun redefining the landscape. Abbotsford now consists of many “centres.” “I can see where we will have mini-centres throughout the city. People are always asking ‘where’s the city’s core,’” said Banman, adding that it’s difficult to name just one area. The newest cluster of development is located at Mt. Lehman Road. Four years ago, Abbotsford attracted Shape Properties’ 600,000-sq.-ft. mall project, called Highstreet. Now complete – tenants include Walmart, London Drugs, Marshalls, Cineplex and more. A new Sandman Hotel is also under construction close to the Highstreet project. “People need to understand that Highstreet

kept a number of businesses in Abbotsford working, that may not have survived the economic downturn. There is more concrete in Highstreet than there is in BC Place. It is the largest shopping mall built in the last 20 years between Vancouver and Calgary.” Highstreet was not Shape’s only investment in Abbotsford. The Vancouver-based company also built the Parallel Marketplace in the area of Whatcom Road. That 135,000-sq.-ft project on the south side of Sumas Mountain is anchored by Coopers Foods. Plans are in place for phase two of that site. The Mennonite Central Committee has acquired land on Gladys and will relocate and consolidate all of its offices in the area. Construction is underway next to the new federal corrections facility that opened last year. The old Clayburn Brick Plant site, which has now been cleared, can also be developed. “South Fraser Way is ripe for development as
well,” said Banman, who also pointed to the Clearbrook and McCallum Road corridors as areas suited for commercial growth. A combination of commercial and residential structures and the need to accommodate the future growth of UFV are planned. This trend of commercial growth has been occurring for years. In the last few decades, much of Abbotsford’s retail began spreading west from the original downtown. When the big box phenomenon took hold, many such stores were built along South Fraser Way, and the sector continues to grow south along Sumas Way. One of the advantages that Abbotsford has, according to Banman, is the fact that “we are surrounded by such rich farmland that will never be developed.” He can’t imagine development on Matsqui or Sumas Prairie. “We will always have agriculture as a backbone of our economy.”
