Riversdale remains optimistic By Joni MacFarlane Editor

About 25 people turned out for an update about proposed coal mining operations on Grassy Mountain about six kilometres north of Blairmore. Although coal prices remain low, senior executives said Riversdale Resources remains focused on the Crowsnest Pass project and expects production to begin in about four more years. Over the past winter, the company began a drilling program to determine coal quality, said Operations Manager Peter Murray, and samples have been sent for analysis. Geotechnical drilling will start in August, said Murray, to see what the surface formation strengths are, as well as more quality sampling to “join the whole sequence together”. Murray also said Riversdale has erected signs on the Grassy Mountain access road to keep the public aware of its operations and ensure public safety. Over the next three or four years, he said, access will become restricted and eventually the road will be closed to the public. Community Liaison Keith Bott told the audience Riversdale has been communicating with neighbouring communities and has established a community advisory committee to look at conservation, recreation and the historical context. “The role behind the committee is to sit down and discuss some of the issues that may arise as a result of the mine coming into the community,” said Bott. Managing Director Steve Mallyon said the Crowsnest Pass project will produce a hard coking coal destined for steel producing markets in Asia, Brazil and possibly, North America. “In doing so, we can attract long-term contracts and premium pricing, which helps the stability of the project going forward,” said Mallyon. “The objective of all this work is to try and reverse history somewhat... The worse thing we can do is start a project out with low coal prices that it closes down very quickly as has been the case with many small mines on the periphery of Grassy Mountain, Bellevue, Frank, etc.” Currently, there is not a lot of competition for contracting and lab services, said Mallyon, and Riversdale is moving quickly to take advantage of that. Mallyon said they have also joined the Canadian Coal Association and provided input to the South Saskatchewan Regional Land Use Plan, even though it does not impact the

Grassy Mountain project directly. One of the key issues is water and the huge demand of water in the MD of Ranchland area. Options Riversdale is looking at are using municipal waste water and utilizing water from old mine cavities that have filled with water over the years, said Mallyon. “The two-fold approach is to look at the ability to utilize

that water if possible, if the regulator will allow it, but also to make a positive impact on runoff into the Crowsnest River,” he said. Riversdale is considering nine options for rail transportation and hopes to reduce them to about three by September. Ideally, said Mallyon, they would bring rail directly to the site, to ensure safety and provide the highest efficiency. Rail options will be presented to the public for input, said

Mallyon, once cost-benefit analyses are completed. Millenium EMS Solutions Ltd. are doing the feasibility study, which will be finished in the third quarter of 2015 and an Environmental Impact Assessment will be completed by mid-2015, Mallyon said. A construction period of about 18 months is expected to start in 2017 and production would get underway towards the end of 2018. A 25-year lifespan is a reasonable length, but the engineering and feasibility studies will determine this further, he added. The company expects to produce about two million tonnes annually with potential for up to four million, he added, In terms of the financial picture, Anthony Martin, Chief Financial Officer, said Riversdale is well funded with supportive shareholders. Although prices remain low, the world’s largest mines are producing record numbers, “so it really shows that those people with the best quality assets are still producing a significant amount of coal”. When pushed for a break-even price, Martin said it would be somewhere around $100/tonne. Mallyon also said because Riversdale is somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of size, they are not as vulnerable to price fluctuations and would be able to get long-term stable contracts for their coal. Also of interest, said Martin, is that China has increased coal imports from Canada from seven per cent to 15 per cent over the last year. “From our point of view, we do see this market not necessarily improving significantly in the short term, but in the medium term we do see it coming back… the reality is that there are a lot of marginal projects that may not still be around at that time,” he said. “We’re quite confident and comfortable in the position we’re in given the general market at the moment.” New hire David Leslie, Vice President Technical Services, introduced himself and said he’ll be running the feasibility study and ensuring the regulatory applications are submitted on time to move the project forward. Mallyon said the company’s business plan is to employ contract services and have as few people as possible at the mine site. For example, this would include equipment suppliers and maintenance services. Traditionally, he said, mining operations employ five to seven people in support services.

Crowsnest Pass bands together to end stigma of mental health

Oh what a night. Beginning with the silence of shocking statistics showing the devastation of mental illness, and moving to the heartbreak of personal stories, last week saw residents come together in a way seldom seen. The event was Clara’s Big Ride and as inspiring and moving as Clara Hughes was, the evening wasn’t about her. And the story wasn’t only hers. It was about all of us and all our stories. The message brought to those of us in attendance – told so humbly and with such grace – was that we all suffer from the havoc that mental illness wreaks upon society, and that together we can break the cycle of fear and isolation felt by those afraid of being “found out”. Those who suffer in silence need to know that there is help available, that there are hands outstretched ready to catch them, and that healthy emotional wellness and a life beyond pain can be yours. It was an incredibly moving and heartwarming experience to feel the connection with hundreds of people in our small community who believe in a caring, compassionate approach to a subject that has for too long been kept in the dark. As witnessed by the courage and celebration of those who work to help others, we’ve opened the door and let a crack of light into this world. Let’s make journeys like Clara’s Big Ride, a thing of the past and no longer necessary. Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s share our stories and help end the stigma around mental illness. Snow clearing While residents are pleased to see the last of winter, municipal council wants to review the snow clearing and ice control policy while it’s fresh on their minds. Issues discussed include clearing municipal sidewalks, clearing back alleys in locations where it’s the main access, ensuring snowplows aren’t impeded by parked vehicles, and shortening the timeframe for clearing main routes. Pass Piranhas Council approved a request to waive swimming pool fees of $577 for the Pass Piranha’s Swim Meet. The request was approved under a new Community Funding & Support Policy implemented to standardize and streamline support requests received by the municipality from community organizations. Since there was no specific dollar amount requested by the Swim Club and it was unknown how much the group expected to fundraise, Council believed waiving the rental fee was appropriate. In celebration of EMS Week, members of the South Zone EMS provided the public with information and cake at the Crowsnest Health Centre on May 27. Responsibility for EMS was transitioned from municipalities and organizations to Alberta Health Services in April 2009. Their mandate is to provide safe, high quality, patient-focused care that is accessible and sustainable. EMS is a key part of the health care system and an important component of the public safety net. Services include ground ambulance, air ambulance, inter-facility transfers and EMS dispatch. Alberta has about 550 ambulances with 4,000 EMS practitioners to provide emergency care. The STARS helicopters fly 1,000 missions every year and 8,500 patients are transferred by fixed-wing planes. There are 152 ambulance stations across the province and EMS dispatch receives 1,100 calls every day. About 280,000 911 calls are received annually.

New Authority to replace sports & recreation committee By Joni MacFarlane Editor

In order to increase authorities and responsibilities, Council approved creation of a new Park & Recreation Authority that will eventually replace the existing Sport & Recreation Advisory Committee. Doing so, said the Director of Community Services Lyle Hannan, will give them the same level of authority as the Municipal Ski Hill Authority and the Family & Community Support Services Board. A recent collaborative review of municipal boards and committees was held with council and administration to understand the way the municipality was using boards and committees. During the review, Hannan said council was very clear that they value the role of committees and that they want volunteers’ experience to be valuable. “So how do we make change that the volunteers will like but will also make the system more efficient,” Hannan said. “We met and talked about a number of issues with the existing structure, the way we’re using committees and boards basically. Some of the issues were things like making sure boards had clear mandates, that they knew what they were supposed to be doing, and that the community understood what the boards’ roles were.” Hannan said part of the discussion also centered around the fact that some committees, societies and boards had decision making authority making it easier to attract volunteers. “It’s a more fulfilling volunteer role than just reviewing issues and making a recommendation to council all the time, which is what the Sport & Rec was [doing],” he added. Changing to a Parks & Recreation Authority will fill several purposes. First, it clearly identifies the mandate to both the community and the committee. Year-round, general usage facilities such as the M.D. McEachern Community Centre, Elks Hall, Albert Stella Memorial Arena, Crowsnest Sports Complex, parks, trails, playgrounds, sports fields and programming will fall under the responsibility of the new Parks & Rec Authority, said Hannan.

Second, as with any of these groups, operating and capital budgets are developed in conjunction with administration, which will then be presented for approval to council. “They don’t have the authority just to set the budget, they have the authority to request a budget,” said Hannan. “But in terms of passing policies that affect how we run those facilities, such as rental policies, pricing, that would be approved at the Authority or Board level.” Currently, the Ski Hill Authority and FCSS set their own fees and prices, and Hannan said he envisions the new Authority will operate the same way. Part of their mandate will also be to increase utilization by looking at hours of operations, rental agreements, future plans and anything that impacts the use of those facilities, said Hannan. Anything with a financial impact will be included in the Board’s budget proposal and council representatives who sit on these boards, will provide input into financial decisions, he added. Within the Community Services Department, Hannan said, they’ve now reviewed several committees including the Swimming Pool Society which they are reformatting, the Ski Hill, FCSS, and the new Parks & Rec Authority. Remaining is the Culture & Heritage Advisory Committee who will meet with council and administration in the near future to discuss their role and future, if any. “We don’t want to have a committee just for the sake of having a committee, so if there’s a purpose, great,” said Hannan. “We as a department don’t have a mandate to deliver facilities and services [in the culture and heritage area] because the

community is doing it... we have no cultural facilities that the municipality directly manages... The difference is that with parks and rec, the pool or the ski hill, we have amenities, facilities, programs that we administer directly so we have boards in place to give us guidance and policies on how to run them and work with user groups that use those facilities. In the case of Culture & Heritage,

for the most part, we have groups that are running those on our behalf or doing the service for the municipality and we’re just supporting them with funds or in-kind contributions.” Hannan said there are other committees and advisory boards but they aren’t part of his department and so were not part of his review with council.

Crowsnest Pass celebrates an evening of mental wellness with Clara Hughes By Joni MacFarlane Editor

It started with the odd blue bike scattered here and there throughout Crowsnest Pass. It grew to a groundswell of blue bikes everywhere and culminated in an evening of shared stories, bringing both laughter and tears in equal measure. Clara’s Big Ride and the community event celebrated on May 28, was a moving and heartwarming experience for more than 400 people that shed light on the tragedy that is mental illness and gave hope for those suffer-

ing in silence. Since March, sixtime Olympian Clara Hughes has been riding across Canada in support of mental health. Over 110 days Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk is visiting 95 communities in all territories and provinces and on Wednesday, May 28, she chose Crowsnest Pass as her stopping point. A group of volunteers made the event a memorable one devoted to the mental wellness of Crowsnest Pass and a celebration of local champions. The evening kicked off with a Hawaiian-

themed fundraising event called “PuPus in the Pass” aimed to “poo-poo” the stigmas attached to mental illness. About 150 people -many styling Hawaiian outfits - attended the event to enjoy Hawaiian appetizers catered by Country Encounters, a live auction, and two speakers. Guest speaker Craig Heisinger, Assistant GM with the Winnipeg Jets, opened the evening followed by a young writer and stand-up comic, Kevin Breel. At only 20-years-old, Breel has become a mental health activist

seen on media outlets around the world, including a TED talk titled, “Confessions of a Depressed Comic” that went instantly viral with nearly two millions views. His story, told at “PuPus”, was at once both heartbreaking and inspiring. A live auction then took place with auctioneer Lowry Toombs getting top dollar for two Cruiser Bikes, a limited-edition NHL autographed jersey, and a Clara-Hughes autographed jersey. The event then moved downstairs where a video of shocking statistics on mental illness echoed eerily through the silence. Despite a roomful of 400 people, the impact of the video was deafening. Randi-Lynn Rinaldi and Pat Rypien, both with well-known families in the Crowsnest Pass, shared their cou-

rageous stories of loss and grief within their own families from the devastating mental illnesses. The audience, clearly moved, then took an emotional right turn as emcee Derek Forgie had them in stitches with his humorous perspective on the community’s unique name before his introduction to keynote speaker, Clara Hughes. Despite 76 days, 182 community events and having ridden 165 kilometres in six hours, Hughes was clearly struck by the presence of “how many blue bikes were out on the road, out in the most unusual places”. Hughes began by saying how great she felt crossing into Alberta. “I felt like I was coming home today,” she said to screams of applause. “It’s a real gift to be

nities big and small is something that truly moves mountains.” She said mental illness was not something a person chooses, but is a sickness that manifests itself differently in everyone. “And this sickness, though it doesn’t affect each person individually, it affects every single one of us because... every person we’ve met and there’s been about 47,000 so far, is affected directly by someone who is struggling if it is not them,” Hughes said. “So why are we not talking about this more? Why are we not talking about the struggle, talking about the reality of what so many families are living, so many families end up torn apart from it because they feel they can’t get help and they can’t say anything.” Cont. next page...

She then shared her personal story of how she struggled throughout her life, poured her energy into sport until after seeing that reaching her Olympic dreams did not lift her depression, accepted the help that had been offered to her. “If we can leave anything with you tonight it’s this audacious idea of having hope and never letting go of hope. Hope that things can be better, hope that people can get help, hope that maybe you can be the person that listens to someone and directs them to the right place or the right person at the right time and they get the help that shifts the direction of their life. Anything is possible.” After her speech, local Chairperson Val Breakenridge thanked Hughes for visiting the Pass and congratulated Clara’s team. Breakenridge then presented Hughes with a book filled with signatures and comments written by thousands of Crowsnest Pass residents on what Clara’s Big Ride and her mental health initiative meant to them. Two women from Piikani Nation traveled specifically to present Hughes with gifts crafted by and given on behalf of their Nation. Vera Potts and Adeline Smith gave Hughes deer antler earrings symbolizing a deer running swiftly, a replica of a bow and arrow symbolizing survival and strength, a picture of a woman at water symboling abundance and a journal with a horse on the front

cover to symbolize power. Potts said when she heard Hughes was coming through Crowsnest Pass, she knew she had to go. “First Nations aboriginal youth are the highest [rate of suicide] in Canada,” she said. “My heart goes out to my people because so many suffer. We need to get everybody back and feel part of the community.” Potts said she presented the gifts to give Hughes encouragement and strength to guide her safely on her journey. Last, Deputy Mayor Bill Kovach gave a brief speech and presented the Community Champions for Mental Health Awards. “We’d like to take this time to honour and thank those people in our community who give so much of their time and energy to promote mental health initiatives,” said Kovach. “Six recipients have been selected whose efforts and achievements are an inspiration to us all.” Students from Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Livingstone School created original pieces of artwork representing their vision of mental wellness. They were Tori Wakaluk, Brittany Jones, Moriah Loseth-Vanderlinden, Tiffany Douglas, Morgan Michalsky and Anna Blomgren. Awarded for their contributions were Janet Elder, Mike Mertz, Loretta Schaufele, Ryan Peebles, the Rinaldi family, and the Ricky Ryp Foundation. According to volunteer John Redekopp, over 25 of the blue bikes were also sold. All money raised by the event stays in the Crowsnest Pass and goes to the Ricky Ryp Foundation and Darcy’s Nature Walk.

For most teenagers, their senior year of high school is one full of excitement and uncertainty. Days consist of catching up on credits and planning for graduation. For Elise Kwan, however, this is not entirely the reality. Kwan, a Grade 12 student at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, was first admitted to the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre in June 2013, before being transferred to Calgary, and later Edmonton, due to a worsening condition and heart complications. She has a multitude of chronic illnesses, causing not only distress to the cardiovascular system but also causing an inability to create her own hemoglobin, resulting in regular blood trans-

fusions. Kwan was also the first person to obtain a dual-ventricular assisting device. Receiving not only local, but also global attention, Kwan has been given aid by such charities as The Sheckler Foundation, an American charity aimed at assisting injured and ill children. Ronald McDonald House charities have also stepped in, housing her family after relocating to be near her. In addition to charitable aid, the community of the Crowsnest Pass and Kwan’s graduating class have been contributing to her betterment as well. Fundraisers, such as “Tacoin-a-Bag Day” have taken place over the past nine months to raise money for Kwan and her family. The money raised, in accordance with Scotiabank, will be

During the Crowsnest Consolidated High School graduation ceremony, a small speech as well as a video of congratulations was dedicated to Kwan, and on Friday, May 30, a group of 13 CCHS graduates travelled to Edmonton to host an additional graduation ceremony with their friend. “She’s a very strong girl and has never let this get the best of her,” said Alexis Bohmer, friend and classmate. “She isn’t defined by her illness. She’s the most selfless person I’ve ever met.” Kwan was discharged from Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton on May 26 and hopes to lead a free life again in the following months.

Test drives donate to high school athletics By Joni MacFarlane Editor

Have you wanted to see how a new F-150 handles on the road? Or how about a 2014 Expedition or Fusion? Now you can test drive a new Ford here in the Crowsnest Pass and know your drive contributed to local students’ supplies. On Saturday, June 7, Crowsnest Consolidated High School will be the scene of a fundraiser for the Crowsnest Consolidated Academic & Athletic Society (CCAAS). Pincher Creek’s Castle Ford

will be bringing in a variety of 2014 vehicles and for every test drive, they will donate $20 to CCAAS. According to Castle Ford’s George Wolstenholme, there will be “almost one of everything”. Kate McNeil, President of the Society, said they are partnering with Lundbreck’s Livingstone School who instigated the event. Castle Ford held the test drive event for schools in Pincher Creek, said McNeil, and Livingstone suggested Crowsnest Consolidated High School would be an ideal location. Drivers can take vehicles for

a seven to 10 minute test drive, about four to five kilometres, and Ford will donate $20 to CCAAS. Funds will be used to buy school and athletic supplies such as new mats for the gym, sports uniforms, and a new scoreboard. Ford will donate a maximum of $6,000 allowing for 300 people to drive a brand-new Ford of their choice. A BBQ at the high school parking lot will also be held throughout the day. Between May 21 and May 28, Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to 60 calls for service. They included: Assaults: 3 B&E (residential:) 1 Treats/Harassment: 1 Thefts: 1 Disturbing Peace: 2 Driving Complaints: 12 MV Collisions: 6 Suspicious Occurrences: 3 Assistance to General Public: 9 Assistance to Other Agencies: 12 911 calls (invalid): 1 False Alarm: 5 Animal Calls: 2 Municipal Bylaws: 2 Trouble in the ‘hood On May 22 at 9:30 p.m., police received a complaint of disturbance in the Lundbreck area. Two males were fighting when one threatened to shoot the other’s dog and one then assaulted the other. Police attended and charged both males from Lundbreck. A 46-year-old was charged with assault and a 52-year-old was charged with uttering threats. Both men were released on conditions to appear in court July 8. Dream weaver On May 23 at 11:45 a.m., police received a complaint of a single vehicle collision on Highway 3 near the Blairmore centre access. An 84-yearold male from Idaho was heading eastbound when he drove across the eastbound lane and into the north ditch. The driver appeared to have fallen asleep and was not injured. He was issued a violation ticket for careless driving in the amount of $402. Handyman On May 21, police received a complaint of theft from a garage on 21st Ave. Blairmore. Various tools were stolen some time during the past two weeks. The matter is under investigation.

The thrill is gone On May 24 at 5 p.m., police received a complaint of an abandoned quad lying in the ditch near Chain Lakes. Police attended and inquires revealed the quad had been stolen from the Turner Valley area. Hell or high water On May 26 at 9 a.m., police received a complaint of a lost dirt bike. The complainant from Medicine Hat advised that he was crossing the creek at Allison Creek when he became caught in fast waters and lost control of the bike to save himself. The bike was recovered by Alberta Environment & Sustainable Resources. Found On May 26 at 6:20 p.m., police received a report of a Yamaha dirt bike found hidden in the bush in the Knowles Flats area. It appears to have been there for some time. Swerving On May 26 at 8:10 p.m., police received a complaint of an aggressive tow truck weaving and tailgating. The vehicle was located and stopped and the Fort Macleod driver was warned. A heap o’ trouble On May 25 at 2:05 a.m., police received a complaint of a disturbance at a Blairmore bar. A male was being subdued when a black truck pulled up and the suspect jumped in. The truck sped away hitting four vehicles in the parking lot and later a light standard on Highway 3 in Frank. At about 5 p.m., a 20-year-old male from Calgary was arrested by the Airdrie RCMP and charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, four counts of failing to comply with conditions, two counts of assault, and two counts of failing to remain at scene of an accident. A Justice Interim Hearing was held and the accused was remanded in custody for a court date of June 3.

The Crowsnest Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will be producing a $10 Crowsnest Pass Trade Dollar to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster, Canada’s worst mining disaster, that occurred on June 19th, 1914 and resulted in the death of 189 coal miners. The obverse of the trade dollar features the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial Monument and the pillows surrounding the monument commemorating other Canadian coal mining disasters. Hillcrest Mine Disaster 19142014 is inscribed on the trade dollar. The reverse of the coin will feature a scene of Crowsnest Mountain and crows in a nest which has been featured on all Crowsnest Pass Trade Dollars produced by

the Society. The society is producing 1,000 nickel/steel Trade Dollars in the denomination of $10. They will be presented in a plastic capsule to preserve them as a commemorative souvenir and they will be available for the price of $10. Also the Society will be producing 50 limited edition pure silver versions of the Trade Dollar in a presentation case and each coin will have a numbered limited edition certificate. They will be available for the price of $75 per piece. To commemorate the loss of 189 coal miners in the disaster, the Society will be producing 189 limited edition gold plated coins in a presentation case with a a numbered limited edition certificate. They will be available for the price of $25. The Society will be auctioning the #1 of 50 Silver Hillcrest Mine Disaster Commemorative Trade

The 100th anniversary of Canada’s worst mining disaster is an important event in not only our community, but in the nation and province. The commemorative events will be featured on national and provincial media bringing attention to our community. It is important that an appropriate commemoration is planned and carried out to commemorate this tragedy. Improvements to the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial will not only honour those who lost their lives but provide an appropriate commemorative experience for all those who visit the site. It is anticipated that publicity around the event will have an ongoing legacy and increase visits to our community as part of an ongoing effort to market our community’s history and our community spirit to not only to live through such a tragedy but to rebuild and survive as a vibrant community that recognizes its past and builds for its future. Improvements to the Hillcrest Ball/Soccer complex will provide a legacy to the community to host future sporting and outdoor events.

Dollars and the #1 and #189 of 189 limited edition Gold Plated Trade Dollars at the Crowsnest Museum’s Book Launch, Exhibit Opening, and Meet and Greet at the Crowsnest Museum on Wednesday evening, June 18 at the Crowsnest Museum in historic downtown Coleman starting at 7 p.m. Individuals may place advance orders for the nickel/steel, pure silver, and gold plated Hillcrest Mine Disaster Commemorative Trade Dollar by contacting the Crowsnest Museum by phoning 403-563-5434, e-mailing cnmuseum@shaw.ca, or dropping by the Museum at 7701-18th Avenue, Coleman. Who will be attending Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial commemorative events?

Invitations have been sent to national, provincial, regional and local dignitaries to participate in the Commemorative Memorial Ceremony. Also descendants of victims from across the country and overseas are expected to attend the Commemorative Memorial Events. Representatives of coal mining communities from across the country have been invited as all coal mining disasters in Canada have been commemorated through the National Coal Mining Memorial Markers which surround the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial Monument. Three additional markers will be added to honour those who lost their lives in other Canadian coal mining disaster in which more than three individuals lost their lives. These disasters were missed when the original monument was dedicated in 2000. Also, local and regional residents will be in attendance to remember and honour those who lost their lives in Canada’s worst mining disaster and to celebrate the spirit of the miner and the community to survive such a tragedy.
