The Harvest In the sunny, arid climate of the Okanagan Valley, local farmers can plant and harvest a seemingly countless selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Anyone can get a piece of this fruitful bounty by visiting one of the roadside fruit stands, stores, "U-Pick" orchards and farmers' markets in Summerland, Penticton and Naramata, open from May to October. In Penticton the market is held at the end of Main Street every Saturday morning, May - October. The market features farming methods used in the surrounding area, from conventional to certified organic. Summerland's market is held Tuesdays, April - October, 9am to 1pm in Memorial Park and Naramata hosts its farmers' market Wednesday evening, June - September in Wharf Park. Plan your trip during the dates when your favourite fruit or vegetable is in season, and get premium quality produce. After a few weeks of dumpster diving, buying Penticton stores out of duct tape and strategising, the cardboard boats are poised to race for the 2nd Annual Naramata Cardboard Boat race trophy on August 3rd. Teams will parade their boats from the school on Sunday morning and make their way to the beach at Manitou Park, children are welcome to take part in the parade on bikes, trikes etc. The race will kick off at 11a.m. with awards to follow. Penticton Peach Festival:
Ask anyone what Penticton is famous for, and Peachfest will likely be the answer. For over six decades, the Peach City's signature festival has been drawing in tourists from all over to take part in five days of family fun. Organizers have managed to keep this event free while still bringing in big name acts and offering something for everyone. Oliver's Festival of the Grape is an all-ages festival and is part of the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. Keremeos hosts this hot pepper festival which celebrates the colourful and spicy pepper - abundant in the Similkameen. Pepper season doesn't start until August, so this year's Sept. 20 date for the festival is just at the right time. One of the festival's most popular events – the Sear Factor Hot Pepper-eating Contest – is made possible thanks to over 100 jalapeno peppers donated by Harkers Farm. Participants in this competition will put their tongues to the test.

Play, tan or just relax at one of our many parks and beaches On the south end of the Penticton, Skaha Lake is always bustling with activity thanks to its cement boardwalk which follows the entire beachfront and passes by a number of vendors often set up alongside it. Home to tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, basketball hoops and a place to play road hockey. For the kids there's a water park and playground with a pond where ducks hang out. The perfect place for a picnic with a large grassy park, lots of shade and tables. For those looking to get wild and wet there is a marina/boat launch and a water sports rental location. Head to the north end of town to Okanagan Lake which is bordered by a long beach running along Lakeshore Drive. The historic SS Sicamous is docked at the west end of the

beach not only offering a beautiful sight to see but also a floating museum for those looking to escape the sun. At the east end of the Strip, visitors can cool down with a refreshment from the giant peach concession stand — a well known Penticton landmark. You can also rent a jet ski or other water sport device. Want to take to the skies? Try out parasailing on Okanagan Lake. Just a block east down the strip you'll find Okanagan Lake Park Beach where you can catch a ride on the Casabella Princess Paddlewheeler. There is also a fenced in dog beach for our four-legged friends. East of Okanagan Lake Park Beach is Marina Way Beach and then the Penticton Yacht Club and Marina where sailboats launch.

Penticton Peach Festival The largest free festival in Western Canada is one of the highlights of the summer season in the Okanagan Valley. The 67th annual Penticton Peach Festival is scheduled Aug. 6-10. The opening day entertainment line-up includes one of Canada’s premier country music groups, Emerson Drive, presented by Peters Bros. Construction. Two of Canada’s legendary classic rock groups, Trooper and The Stampeders will also be performing at Peachfest this year. Trooper will be on Thursday night, with the Stampeders on Saturday. In between, on Friday, will be a special Tribute Night featuring tributes to Neil Young, AC/DC and U2. On Sunday night, Irish party band, ‘Killarney’ will wrap up the Peach Festival. Twice per day throughout the festival, one of the most thrilling trampoline shows in North America will dazzle spectators with their Trampoline Wall and Power Track Show, presented by the Lakeside Resort. And everything happening in Okanagan Lake Park can be seen on the Tim Hortons Giant Screen. But, Peach Festival is much more than entertainment on the main stage. The Peters Bros. Grand Parade is scheduled Saturday, to be followed by the Downtown Penticton Association’s Kiddies Parade on Sunday. Other events include: The square dance festival which attracts hundreds of participants to the Seniors Drop-in Centre; the Pentown Throwdown which features some of the top BMX riders and skateboarders in Western Canada; the Aboriginal Cultural Village and Pow Wow in Gyro Park; the crowning of Miss Penticton at the Cleland Theatre; the Sandcastle Competition at Skaha Lake Beach; the annual Sheila Bishop Memorial Slopitch Tournament at Lions Park; Seniors Day on Aug. 6; Kiddies Day on Aug. 10; and the Shooting Star Amusements Carnival, from Aug. 4-10 in Rotary Park. Penticton Farmers' Market
Downtown Besides traditional storefronts, downtown Penticton becomes a bustling public market that opens the beginning of May until early fall. The public markets have become, without a doubt, one of the biggest attractions in Penticton's downtown core. The Penticton Farmers' Market takes over the 100 block of Main Street, where the home-grown delights of the South Okanagan can be purchased from local small-scale organic farmers and orchardists. Starting in June, find a range of original art from locals in the park directly adjacent. Penticton and District Arts Council Artisan Market, Art Under The Trees features photography, paintings, pottery, clothing and jewellery from throughout the Okanagan. The Community Market encompasses the 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street, as well as Front Street. This year calls are going out for all performers: jugglers, stilt walkers, portrait painters, chalk artists, body painters or anyone who would like to entertain during market hours. Traditional storefronts offer an eclectic diverse

shopping experience. Whether you are looking for the latest music album, a new bathing suit, skateboard gear, latest fashion trends, books or gifts you can probably find it in one of the many downtown shops. Check out the many restaurants, sports bars and clubs or catch a movie at the 3D, seven screen Landmark Cinema theatre, live music at one of the cafes or play a game of pool while you are down there. The Downtown Penticton Association has a loyalty card program rewarding customers for shopping and dining in downtown Penticton. Customers will receive a Downtown Loyalty Card, register online, and watch as their purchases turn into cash rewards. Each participating business creates a unique offer, while the customer has the benefit of using one loyalty card in more than one location. A summer staple in Penticton is also offered by the Downtown Penticton Association. Sunshine Cabaret is a free concert series in Gyro Park on Friday and Saturday evenings in July and August. It is a great way to spend a summer evening with the family sitting in the park listening to live music of a variety of genres.

Penticton Plaza Penticton Plaza has the bases covered with a Safeway grocery store, Shoppers Drug Mart, a liquor store and a number of other shops. You'll find the plaza at Main Street and Duncan Avenue.
Lougheed Centre This plaza-style shopping area is anchored by Real Canadian Superstore, Staples and Winners. It is also home to a health food store and a major bank. There are a number of shops that make this a worthwhile stop on the southeast corner of Main Street and Warren Avenue.

Peachtree Square A WalMart anchors Peachtree Square. It is also home to a credit union, Payless Shoesource and a number of new outlets. Peachtree is in the south end of the city at Skaha Lake Road and Green Avenue.
The Cannery Trade Centre In a warehouse-style setting on Fairview Road you'll find everything from coffee shops, a unique bakery, outerwear, shoe repair to drama and dance studios.

Colourful Front Street
If you have a taste for something different and unique you will probably find it on colourful Front Street, which is known for the brightly coloured storefronts. With architecture reminiscent of the early 1900s, Front Street has something for everyone – from art galleries to quaint cafés. It is also known as a hotspot to watch live music. This area also boasts unique restaurants, one-of-a-kind boutiques, salons and other services.
Along the beaches
On Lakeshore and Riverside drives you'll find shops, motels and restaurants with some of the best views of Penticton. Sunset Strip is the perfect locale for a scenic lunch or fabulous dinner. Rent a scooter or hop on a bike from the rental shop near the S.S. Sicamous and take in the atmosphere.
Flea markets
There are a few flea markets to browse in Penticton Sunday mornings. The SPCA flea market runs from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Creekside Plaza located at 1550 Main St. It raises funds for the animal shelter. Survivorship Dragonboat Team's Flea Market is held from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. every Sunday (weather permitting) at Fairview Plaza, 1652 Fairview Road, with money raised toward the team's activities and breast cancer awareness.

Wind your way north from Penticton on a country road with breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake and into the world of wine and beaches to the village of Naramata. Stop at the historic Inn for lunch or dinner or try out meditation at the Naramata Centre, a conference and retreat facility. Founded in 1907, Naramata linked with the rest of Canada when the Kettle Valley Railway was completed on the hillside above the village. Today, remnants of the KVR make for great hiking or biking exploration, such as the train tunnels, rock ovens and the railway right-of-way which clings to the hillside above Okanagan Lake and is now part of the Trans-Canada trail.

Oliver is a nature lovers' paradise with a diverse landscape and a wealth of activities year-round including windsurfing, fishing, golfing, hiking and canoeing. From the Festival of the Grape, Half Corked Marathon to the Oliver airport flying' breakfast there is plenty going on in the community. Keremeos
An hour west along Highway 3 you will find Keremeos. History buffs should check out the Grist Mill and nature lovers can trek around nearby Cathedral Provincial Park. For a spectacular sight visit the Keremeos Columns, created from basalt resulting from Volcanic activity some 30 million years ago. Every year cowgirls and cowboys gather in the small community in May for the Elks Keremeos Rodeo which features all the major events, a parade and more. Keremeos is also home to Canada's only hot pepper festival. The 13th annual event takes place Sept. 20th and includes a hot sauce contest, entertainment and more.

The Peach City Half Marathon and 10-kilometre run starts and ends at the west end of Skaha beach. From the start area, the course makes a right hand turn after approximately 120-m onto Skaha Lake Road where the course proceeds north for 2.5-km. The course then turns right and proceeds onto South Main Street and heads 2.5-km south to the edge of town. They run along Skaha Lake to the turn around point (7.5-km from the start), then return along Skaha Lake to the Skaha Beach promenade and the finish line. July 7 The Desert Half Iron takes triathletes through a twokm swim, 93-km bike and 21.1-km journey through Osoyoos. Athletes will begin the challenge at 7 a.m. Last year’s race was won by Nathan Champness of Vernon and Malindi Elmore of Kelowna.
July 20 The 32nd Peach Classic Triathlon takes athletes through one of the most beautiful courses you’ll find. Competitors swim 1.5 kilometres on a new triangular course within the city before embarking on the challenging bike (40-km) and running (10-km) courses that take them on a scenic tour of the Penticton/ Naramata area. The event has 14 age categories ranging from 18 to 80-plus years of age. The Boston Pizza Junior event, previously held the day before, is being held during Challenge Penticton week on August 22. Beach Cruise Car enthusiasts will gather for the must-see Annual Peach City Beach Cruise event in Penticton June 20-22, with hundreds of hot rods, antique and classic cars on display on Lakeshore Drive. The Peach City Beach Cruise hits the street this June 20, 21 and 22. The annual event features over 600 vehicles from western Canada, the northwest USA and as far away as Arizona and Texas. Friday, "Ken Paton Day" in memory of one of the founders of the event, vehicles will travel from Skaha Lake to Okanagan Lake which then continues with a display of cars along Lakeshore Drive. The three day event also features live entertainment and food vendors in Gyro Park. The Beach cruise has partnered with Mackee Collector Car Auctions to present an exciting Collector Car Auction at the Lakeside Resort. Eventually the Penticton Historic Automobile society hopes to build and maintain an automobile museum in Penticton. Challenge Penticton Penticton’s fresh start in triathlon couldn’t have had a better ending for Challenge Penticton. Local Jeff Symonds crossed the finish line on Aug. 27 bruised and bloodied after he crashed on his bike. With his fists raised and head thrown back, Symonds shouted in joy as he danced the final 30-metres to the finish line in a time of eight hours, 29 minutes and 57 seconds. Symonds, competing in only his second long-distance triathlon, suffered serious scrapes to his hands, arms and legs after crashing his bicycle on a steep hill near Yellow Lake. Symonds, 27, later admitted he had concerns about finishing the race but somehow found the will to continue. “If you lose your concentration, even for a moment, it can be all over, so I was just glad to get up and back on the bike, I’m never going to forget this one, that’s for sure." he said. “I grew up watching the race but I never dreamed I would be in this position one day. I guess it shows that anything is possible.” Symonds was among the 381 men who finished the 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-km bike and 42-km run. Carrie Lester of Australia won the women’s side while Penticton’s Jen Annett finished third in a field of 191. The inaugural Challenge Penticton also featured a relay event that saw 84 teams tackle the full distance course. For 2014, Challenge Penticton has added a half distance race. Triathletes will complete a 1.9-km swim in Okanagan Lake, followed by a single-loop 90-km bike ride and a 21.1-km out-and-back run through Penticton and along northeastern Skaha Lake. Challenge Penticton athlete liaison Bruce Schoenne said this was an athlete-driven addition. The half-triathlon is limited to 600 entries, 500 individual and 100 relay teams, made up of two or three members. Challenge Penticton organizers have also added a half relay. Teams of two or three people can now register to swim 1.9-km, bike 90-km and run 21.1-km on the iconic course. Diana Stirling, vice-chair of the Penticton Triathlon Race Society, said that right from the start of planning, they embraced the Challenge Family goal of appealing to athletes of all levels. The full distance relay, the half course Challenge and the new relay all offer different entry points for aspiring long distance triathletes. The 2014 Challenge Penticton takes place on Aug. 24.

Elvis Festival The tradition of rock ‘n roll excellence continues this summer with the 13th annual Penticton Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival – June 27 to 29. Elvis devotees from far and wide come to the perfect holiday haven to celebrate the King. Dozens of tribute artists will grace the outdoor stages that are set around picturesque Okanagan Lake. Join them for a wonderful weekend of remembering Elvis through his extensive musical library and touching stories from those who knew him and how Elvis touched their lives. The event is run by the Penticton Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival Society, a not-for-profit, whose main goal is to celebrate the life and music of the greatest entertainer ever known. The three-day festival featured Headliner is Bill Cherry, Winner of the 2009 Ultimate Elvis Contest in Memphis. Elvis professional competitors in Penticton will be battling to finish first so they can win the automatic entry into the final round of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Competition held during Elvis Week in Graceland, Memphis.

Some highlights of the festival: • Headliner show is Saturday, June 28th at the Trade and Convention Center. • June 28 - the Competition is on all day at Okanagan Lake Park. • Sunday, June 29th is the Gospel Show (9am) at Okanagan Lake Park. • The Finals take place Sunday afternoon at the Penticton Trade and Convention Center. The winner will represent the Penticton Elvis Festival at the ultimate Elvis Competition this year. Adam Fitzpatrick of Penticton placed 2nd at Memphis in 2013. No trip would be complete without touring portions of the now-abandoned Kettle Valley Railway line. Immediately within Penticton, visitors can access the trail from the end of Vancouver Place just off Vancouver Avenue. Crossing Randolph Draw via a bridge the community helped to build, the trail winds its way towards Hillside Estate Winery where visitors may sample fine wine and cuisine before continuing. The trail – dotted with historic markers and resting places overlooking Okanagan Lake – has a gentle 2.2 per cent uphill grade but it has some rough and sandy spots too and users should be aware of their physical limits. Some basic trail rules also apply. • Cyclists should always carry drinking water and they must yield to hikers or riders as horses may startle easily; • Rattlesnakes are common along the trail. Watch and listen for them; • Stay off private property. While some areas along the trail are public land, most run through private land. The trail is also accessible from the community of Naramata via Arawana and Smethurst roads. Those seeking a more relaxed trail time can stroll along the paved walkway that runs from the S.S. Sicamous to the Penticton Lakeside Resort, Okanagan Lake park and the Penticton-Ikeda Japanese garden behind the Penticton Art Gallery. The trails through the Summerland Ornamental Garden also offer stunning views of a different kind and are less strenuous. An added attraction is the nearby rail trestle across Trout Creek. Those wishing to see some rare wildlife within a short drive from Penticton should check out the Vaseux Lake Provincial Park just south of Okanagan Falls on Hwy 97. Trails lead through a sensitive ecosystem home to many of Canada’s most endangered species. Penticton is also home to the world-famous Skaha Bluffs. The climbing area – a series of north-south canyons south of Penticton – draws climbers from across the world and has been featured in television commercials and other productions.

Standing in the shadows of Giant’s Head Mountain and overlooking Okanagan Lake, the gardens are the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or light picnic lunch.
