The president and CEO of Island Health says he expects Parksville Qualicum Beach will get up to six new palliative care beds by late fall. Dr. Brendan Carr made the announcement after Island Health’s board of directors met in front of about 100 people at the Parksville Community Centre on Thursday. Carr was not available for comment immediately after the meeting, but responded to a request for information from The NEWS via e-mail later that day. “As part of the development of Island Health’s overall end of life plan, we have developed a bed plan for beds in community and hospital settings,” wrote Carr. “The bed plan is based on ‘hospice clusters’ of four-six beds in various communities, including Oceanside. These beds will be located in established residential care settings and funded using existing resources.” The Island Health board of directors got the business portion of its meeting on Thursday — including a presentation by Oceanside Hospice Society’s Lynn Wood — done in about 45 minutes. B.C. will experience a second week of rotating teacher’s strikes, with School District 69 schools closed Thursday, June 5. As teachers continue the partial strike and the province continues a partial lockout in response, they continue to bargain, but some students are starting to worry about the impact. “I feel teachers are fighting for wages more than our rights,” said Grade 10 Kwalikum Secondary student Robert Filmer. He said he felt 70 per cent of students are up on the issues and are roughly 50/50 split supporting one side or the other. Though speaking for himself, he said he feels he represents a good sample of his friends and the opinion he hears in the halls. See TEACHERS ‘GREEDY AND SELFISH’, page A9

On May 23, the Parksville Fire Department received delivery of a new state-of-the-art pumper. The new truck will be designated as Engine 41 and will replace the previous Engine 41, which has been in service for 24 years. This new truck will join Engine 42 delivered in late 2011, also from Hub Fire Engine. Engine 41 was built and designed by Hub Fire Engine Ltd in Abbotsford and features a 1,500 gallon-per-minute pump. The new truck was in Victoria last weekend on display by the manufacturer at the Fire Chiefs’ Association of BC annual conference in Victoria. City officials say residents are welcome to stop by the fire hall at any time to check out the new truck. The Parksville Fire Department operates with 40 volunteer firefighters, three career staff and one part-time clerical staff. — NEWS Staff/City of Parksville news release

They heard from a Hospital Employees Union member who works at Stanford Place who asked the health authority to take over the private contract at that facility. “We beg our health authorities to take over these P3 (public-private partnerships) facilities and run them in a respectful way,” said the man, who also suggested the answer for palliative care beds in the region could lie in the empty beds at Stanford Place.” “We acknowledge it is challenging sometimes with these (P3) relationships ,” said Carr. BCNU’s Pacific Rim chair Jo Salken later took to the microphone, telling Carr and Hubbard that two nurses at the Oceanside Health Centre are currently on stress leave and two others may do the same soon “because they can’t handle their workloads.” “Things need to change or we are going to be losing people left, right and centre,” said Salken. In his e-mail to The NEWS after the meeting, Carr explained what’s at work on this issue. “The Oceanside End of Life Working Group was formed about a year ago and is a group of the Oceanside Division of Family Practice,” wrote Carr. “The group’s members include representatives from Hospice, Island Health, Patient Voices, physicians, the Society of Organized Services, Salvation Army, Pharmacy and residential care partners. The group meets monthly and its priority is to develop a coordinated approach to palliative care services in the Oceanside area. The working group is currently developing a plan of which the outcome will be to enhance palliative care services in the Oceanside area and anticipates it will complete this plan in early fall. Once approved – anticipated by late fall, implementation of the plan will begin.” Island Health also provided The NEWS some statistics related to end-of-life issues in this region: • In 2013, there were 170 palliative care patients in the Oceanside area who were registered with Home and Community Care and passed away. Of these patients, 45 per cent died at home, 30 per cent died at the PCU located at NRGH, eight per cent died in the EOL bed located at Eagle Park residential care facility and seven percent were either discharged or moved. The adult-only event takes place at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC) on Sunday, June 22 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15 and go on sale today (June 3) at the PCCC, Practicum of Music and Art at 620 Neden Way in Parksville, and Once Again Fashions in Chilham Village in Qualicum Beach. Trisha Plunkett has been volunteering with the society for a number of years, dropping by the Manna Van in Parksville on Saturdays to deliver food, supplies and warm hugs. Plunkett raised $1,600 for Manna at a community garage sale last summer and said it was wonderful to be able to use that for local people in need. Her daughter Susanne also bakes and buys items for Plunkett to take to the Manna Van on Saturdays and her granddaughter Madison helps her put together items for the van like handmade bags filled with ladies personal items. The event on June 22 will feature musical duo Micheal and Els Schutte. The couple is from Holland, where Michael was in a number of prominent bands for many years and Els taught line dancing. Oyster 101 on June 19 at 7 p.m. promises to be an evening of fun for oyster lovers. The $40 admission includes raw and cooked local oyster dishes, BC oyster wine pairings and an educational seminar. Guests will learn what makes a great oyster and how to shuck one as well as a bit of oyster lore. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Call 250-740-6611 to reserve. Brian Kingzett, manager of the field station in Deep Bay will lead an excursion called Foraging for Wild Edibles. On June 28 ,one of the year’s lowest tides takes place uncovering a variety of edible treasures. From 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. guests will sample salty-sweet ocean delicacies including Pacific oysters and Manila clams direct from their shells on the shellfish research farm of the university. Afterwards, participants will return to the field station for a short cooking demonstration and a shellfish themed meal showcasing the products of local shellfish farms and paired with Vancouver Island wines all prepared by the field station’s chefs in residence. Tickets are $95 plus tax and reservations are required. The Errington Volunteer Fire Department started a junior program in April and the six new recruits have been enthusiastically learning the ropes. They participate in Tuesday night fire practices and thanks to a generous donation from the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation they get to wear new helmets. They also have their own turn-out gear and on June 21 they will take part in an EVFD car wash and garage sale to raise funds for a turn-out gear washing machine. Drop by fire hall #1 at 960 Errington Road and check out the bargains from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. To donate to the fundraiser you can drop off items at fire hall #1 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call the hall first at 250-248-5601 to make sure an officer is there. The group Feathers, which stands for friends for ethical avian treatment, finding homes, sharing education, resources and support has about 48 parrot owners on Vancouver Island. The bird lovers meet monthly in Parksville for fun and camaraderie and also to find ways to help birds and bird owners in need. Assistance can range from education on behaviour, nutrition, health issues and crisis intervention to fostering, assistance in re-homing a bird and advice on habitat enrichment. New members are welcome and can email Irex@shaw.ca for more information. When David Rowe started the Mount Arrowsmith Bonsai Club 10 years ago there were only a dozen members. Today, there are 26 members who practice the ancient art of bonsai. Rowe says they do a lot more than just growing trees in containers. “It is quite an art and it takes a lot of practice,” he said. Errington volunteer firefighter Lieutenant Dave Dahlstedt accepted a cheque for $1000 from Gale Mossman a director with the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation. The foundation held its AGM May 21 and distributed grants to several local charitable organizations. The EVFD used the funds to purchase fire helmets for their six new junior fire fighters.
Nancy Chisholm celebrated her 88th birthday May 23 with her yoga instructor Jill Sawchuck at the Qualicum Beach Seniors Activity Centre. Jill has been teaching yoga at the centre for three years and said Nancy as well as her other flexible seniors enjoy the many benefits of her gentle yoga classes including improved balance, posture, strength and mental calmness.
Part of being a firefighter includes being an expert car washer. Qualicum Beach firefighter Aaron Schneider and his sons Carson and Max left no streaks on May 24 as they helped out with a QBFD car wash fundraiser. The Firefighters Association is raising money for a student bursary that will be awarded in 2015 at Kwalikum Senior Secondary School.
Naala a 15 year old Umbrella Cockatoo has a special bond with Brenda Hale and spends a lot of time on her shoulder. Brenda who lives in French Creek acquired Naala eight years ago and says the bird will live to be about 40. The two were among several bird lovers at St. Anne and St. Edmund Church May 24 for a gathering of the parrot support group, Feathers.
This Bougainvillea tree originally from Thailand was just one of the many beautiful specimens that were part of the Mt. Arrowsmith Bonsai Society spring show at The Old School House Gallery in Qualicum Beach May 24. Bonsai master David Rowe bought the tree 40 years ago and says it is about 120 years old and produces new red flowers two to three times a year.

When the class of 1964 graduated in Qualicum Beach, the village was a couple decades away from becoming a town, the population was under 1,000 and the 66 students comprised the largest grad class in the region’s history. The students, who gathered last week to mark their 50th anniversary, were mostly born in 1946, and they marked a number of important firsts, including being the first “baby boomer” grads, the first to graduate from the newly named Kwalikum Secondary School, though it was still on the spot where The Gardens care home now stands. About 35 of the grads made it to the reunion Wednesday at the community hall, half a block from where they’d attended all five years of high school, before the middle school system was introduced in 1977. as many as 20 people from that class still live, or have returned to the region, but there are also members living in places like New Zealand and The Philippines.

Deja vu, again
T
he instant gratification digital age has detrimentally affected everyone’s ability to see the bigger picture, both as it relates to the past and the future. Two current issues paint a picture of this myopic attitude. Christy Clark is not the first premier to talk about how the process for the way government and teachers bargain is broken. Somehow, because she has said it recently in this round of contentious bargaining, it becomes a new thing, like some kind of revelation. It is not. The characters change in the premier’s office and at the top of the teachers’ union, but the same script is spoken every few years. The facts are, enrolment is down in many jurisdictions, in some places dramatically, like Parksville Qualicum Beach. When the formula used to fund the system is based on per pupil numbers, the pot is smaller. It’s not rocket science. The teachers also say, every time their contract comes up, they are fighting for the children and the level of their education. If they were only asking for smaller class sizes and a return of supports and enhancements like aides and librarians, that would be more believable. The BCTF says the average salary of a teacher in B.C. is $71,485. While the BCTF is coy about its wage-increase demands, some reports indicate the BCTF is asking for 16 per cent over four years, 21.5 per cent if you work in the increased costs to benefits and reduced workload. You can read the same phraseology, the same comments from both the government and the teachers, in any labour dispute between the parties for the past four decades. As Yogi Berra said, it’s deja vu all over gain. Meanwhile, Island Health’s board of directors and president/CEO paid a visit to Parksville Qualicum Beach last week, and spoke about the lack of palliative care beds (there’s one) in the region like it was a new thing that they are tackling in a timely manner. This is another decades-long issue that has been ignored for just as long by Island Health. Our region continues to be home to older and older people, increasing the need for palliative care beds. These are not new issues. All of the parties involved should stop treating them as such, admit culpability and move to make real, systemic changes so we’re not talking about the same things in another 20 years. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters THE STRIKE’S IMPACT ON US STUDENTS
My name is Ginny Lefeaux, and I am a Grade 10 student at Ballenas Secondary in Parksville. I wrote this letter to the B.C. government but I wanted to share it with your readers. I am an active gymnast and an excellent student. Now I realize that you, the government, must be receiving tons of angry letters from parents, teachers, support staff and the community scolding you for cutting teacher’s salaries and canceling recesses. The purpose of this letter isn’t to harass you to raise the salaries, or make miracles; it’s purely to show how much you are affecting us. In just two years, I will be graduating, and universities will start looking at my marks in just a few short months. This year, I am required by you to write three provincial exams, counting for 20 per cent of my final grade. Tell me, how am I supposed to do well on my finals if I can’t ask for extra help at lunchtime? Sometimes, I will have early choir practice and I almost always have gymnastics after school, so there goes before and after school help. What happens on strike days, where we are supposed to have class, and yet our teachers are so fed up with the current situation that they have to protest? Well, we fall even further behind, causing even more homework, and even less learning. And how on earth are teachers supposed to do all their marking and prep in just an hour and a half? I guess they have to do prep inclass, spending precious helping and teaching time grading tests and photocopying. I also tutor at the local elementary school and no recess for them has really affected them. Trust me, would you like to supervise 30 kids who have so much energy and no time to let it out or even get a good snack? My teachers are the ones who have got

me through to this point, and I support them 100 per cent. Their request for smaller class sizes, more support staff and less budget cuts is nowhere near unreasonable. To put it in perspective, my class alone had 33 kids at one point, and four with IEP’s. In a 80-minute math class, 30 minutes is spent teaching while the other 50 minutes is spent working on our own. That means that the teacher can only spend 90 seconds helping each kid, which is now even less because of the marking and prep teachers have to do in-class. Our school is falling apart because you won’t provide us with more funding due to declining registration in our district. Because of this, my school has no honours or AP classes, no textiles program, very limited sports facilities and severely outdated technology. Our generation has been said to be “The Leaders of Tomorrow.” How are we supposed to lead if we are constantly being stuck in the middle of all of this, with not enough resources to get us through? How will I get into university with low provincial exam scores because I couldn’t get help? And please, how are the younger kids going to be leaders in our community and of the world if they can’t be provided with the resources and support to get them there? Please take this into consideration, as it is you who is shaping the mould for generations to come. I hope my letter left an impression, and really did show how much your decisions are affecting us. NO INVASIVE MONEY Re: ‘Battling invasive species’ (The NEWS, May 20). The article said $60,000 in grant money has been given to the Coastal Invasive Species Committee by the provincial gov-
ernment to “control the spread of invasive plants.” Right away my attention was drawn to the rest of the article. Reference is made to some local groups that are battling invasives. I’ve been a volunteer with both the French Creek Society (hog weed) and the Oceanside Broombusters and I know both of the groups do their work with volunteers and do this work on a shoestring or two. Local residents may think that some of this $60,000 came to these deserving groups, but no. Local bootson-the-ground societies were mentioned in the article, but the provincial grant went to a group that few have ever heard of and which I believe has no representation in the area. The lack of real action by the provincial government on invasive species is being glossed over by grants to invasive committees around the province who operate websites with general info about some plants and animals considered problems. Vague and general information about various invasives just doesn’t cut it or deal with the piles once it’s cut, like the broom that is outof-control here on the coast, where humans have disturbed the topsoil for a 100 years. The biggest problem is that the battle is real difficult to wage when some big players are not involved. In the case of broom, the main culprits in the spread are the rail-lines and BC Hydro transmission lines. If our provincial government really wants to make a difference in what could be an immense problem in a few years, we need to see some real action. A real big impact could be made if corporate “citizens” took their responsibility to the environment seriously. Otherwise it is just so much green wash. letter TOMORROW’S ENVIRO DESOLATION The letter ‘Climate change panel’s edits’ (The NEWS, May 27) Stan Gauthier outlined political engineering of the intergovernmental panel’s report on climate change, which in my opinion is absolutely correct. I believe that governments can get away with minimizing the potential effects on all humanity that a warming world will bring because people in the great majority want to deny that at some time, in the near or not so near future, their lives will be torn apart, diminished and curtailed by the foreseen and likely changes to climate that will come. For 30 years before the start of The First World War of 1914, many learned individuals and groups for and against an armed conflict of empires, constantly warned the future combatants and the so thought independent nation observers, that steps must be taken to prevent the potential tragedy from occurring or to ensure that their side was victorious. To no avail. The threat of war was good for business. Most believed that it would always be
deferred, that common humanity backed by the needs of business would make the start of a great war impossible. When the war started then the belief fostered by all the participants was that it could only last a few months. It would be a war to end wars and so on. I am certain that the majority of people today know that severe climate change with all its consequences is a sure thing. They cling to the forlorn hope that it may never happen or at the final tipping point someone or something will rescue them. Otherwise, hard decisions would have to be made that would impact current lifestyles. Material things and the gratification of so called wants and needs that can be done without, would have to be set aside for the common good. People are not prepared to do that. Tomorrow’s desolation is another day that may not come in their lifetime. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the other world leaders are giving their majority constituents what they want, rose colored glasses that obscure the future. Naskart is coming to Parksville, just in time for summer. Fast Time Grand Prix coowners Doug Mclean and Norm Spann are putting the final touches on their 1,650 foot outdoor track nestled between Errington and Parksville along Springhill Road. The winding asphalt track is lined by bright canary yellow boards. Twenty-one karts in five different colors patiently wait to be driven. The classic black and white checkered flag — a cornerstone of racing — sways in sync with the wind. And a single spotlight, that will provide the leisure of night-riding, towers over the new facility. “Nothing like this exists in B.C.,” said Spann, peering out at the track in seeming disbelief. “We’ve been working on this idea for six years.” Spann describes the track as “that model road race set from when you were a kid but blown up.” And it’s that childhood nostalgia of model race cars that the duo is looking to recreate. Mclean said construction started about eight weeks ago, but the process of securing and re-zoning land, coupled with drawing hundreds of blueprints for the track, took more than half a decade. Mclean explains the karts are not traditional go-karts, but rather naskarts. “They’re made in the United Kingdom by a company called Sodi,” he said. “They’re kind of like a hybrid between a race car and a go kart.” And Spann said they’re built to drive. “The naskarts are low so

you’re only a couple of inches from the ground,” he said. “It really elevates the ride.” Naskarts can get up to 50 kilometres per hour, which Spann said feels like 100 when you are that close to the road driving around a 35-turn track. In the midst of our interview, a young man from Victoria stops by the track to inquire about when it will open. His eyes sparkle like a kid in a candy shop looking at the track as he eagerly asks Spann and Mclean questions about how soon he can drive one of the naskarts around the track. He said he will “definitely be coming back” when they open.
Spann and Mclean smile at each other in anticipation. “That happens at least a few times a day,” said Mclean. “People are really excited about this.” The business partners plan to have single and group/family rates. People will also be able to rent out the entire track for private functions such as work or birthday parties. Furthermore, racers will be able to clock their personal best times and every day they will be recorded at the track under usernames, so people can compete with one another or with themselves. Fast Time Grand Prix is a family business and both partners say they have children who will
work there this summer. They have chosen to support B.C. Transplant to encourage organ donation — an idea that came out of a tragic accident earlier this year. Sixteen-year-old Ciaran Martin, Mclean’s step-son, who was supposed to work at the track, was hit by a car in January while long boarding. Martin succumbed to his injuries, but donated his heart, both lungs, liver, kidney and both eyes through B.C. Transplant; something he said he wanted to do less than two months before the accident. “We wanted to do something with B.C. Transplant to honour Ciaran so his death doesn’t
just become another child who vanishes from this world,” said Mclean. “We’re going to have organ donation forms right here at the track, especially so youth — a more difficult group to target — can sign up. We’ll mail off the forms each month or families can take them home to complete together.” Mclean said naskart number 19 represents his late step-son, as that was his birthday (Feb.19). The annual Fishing Forever event was held at the Coombs Country Campground Friday with over 100 people from local care homes getting a chance to fish and socialize in the sun Brian Borrett, co-chair of the event, said they had great weather and a big turnout of guests from care homes like Stanford Place and The Gardens, and clients of the MS Society and Canadian National Institute for the Blind. “The idea is just to get people out to have a good relaxing time,” Borrett said. “This is the fifth time here and it’s always a great
event,” said campground owner Danny Nedokus. Borrett thanks Nedokus for the free use of the pond and said the event, hosted by the Parksville Qualicum Fish and Game Association, is also made possible by the donation of rods from Walmart, lunch from Qualicum Foods and trout from Vancouver Island University. Started by the B.C. Wildlife Federation in 1989, there are at least a dozen similar events around the province. A Parksville academic has been recognized for his contributions to education. Roger H. Barnsley has been selected as one of 25 in the province to receive the 2014 Order of British Columbia — which Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon describes as “the province’s most prestigious accolade.” Barnsley said the news came as a surprise. “It’s a great honour,” he told The NEWS from his Parksville home Friday. According to a government news release, the award recognizes those who have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of fellow citizens, making a positive difference in the community and providing inspiration across B.C. Barnsley worked in five different provinces before retiring in Parksville three years ago. He completed his PhD and MA in Psychology from McGill University.
Barnsley is the founding president of Thompson Rivers University and played an instrumental role in transitioning the University College of the Cariboo to TRU in 2004. He also worked as a professor at St. Thomas University, Saint Mary’s University, the University of Lethbridge and Memorial University of Newfoundland. Creating access to education, he said, has been a cornerstone in his career. “Education is all about hope,” he said, adding the most satisfying part of his job has been “the opportunity to influence young people’s lives.” Since retiring in 2008, Barnsley has served on the BC Drug Benefit Council and is currently the co-chair of the British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfers and a Vancouver Island Health Authority director. Recipients of the OBC are selected by an independent advisory committee from public nominations. They will be hon-

School memorabilia highlights annual picnic Free event will honour French Creek Community School’s 102-year history LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
The annual Coombs Community Picnic on June 6 will honour the French Creek Community School, one of four elementary schools in the area slated for closure. The event originated as a Strawberry Tea at the school back in the late 1930s and after it stopped for many years it was reactivated and made into a Community Picnic. Years later it was relocated to the Coombs Fairgrounds in order to use the kitchen and have a potluck. This year the free event will be back at the school, honouring what the school has been over the last 102 years. From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. people can walk through and look at memorabilia. This was compiled by volunteers Marlene Stahley and Sharon Cox-Gustavson from the Coombs Museum. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Community Picnic will offer free food, live entertainment and activities. Everyone from the surrounding communities are welcome at the event. Anne Raffle, on the event’s organizing committee, has a long history at the school. Both her mother and father attended the school, her cousins attended (and they were one of the original families that settled in the area in 1910). Raffle was a teachers’ assistant at the school and later worked as a custodian until last November, she has a grandchild attending the school and two other grandchildren who went through the school. “There’s quite a few others like our

family around,” she said. A number of community members, organizations and businesses have come together to help put the event on, supplying the food for the free picnic, signs, chairs, coffee, activities and much more. Marilynn Sims, with the Arrowsmith Recreation Team, said one of the reasons so many community members have banded together for the event surrounds the closure of the school. “This could be the last one,” she said. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. people can en-
joy free hotdogs, popcorn and beverages while joining in on the activities which will be outside, weather dependent. There will be live music by The Harmony Band, Gerry Barnum and Deb Ryan and the activities include pony rides, bouncy castles, button-making and face painting. There will also be a garden railway, a full-sized steam engine and free play on the field. The 4H club will be on-site with a display, the BLT To Go bus will be in attendance, along with Arrowsmith Search and
Rescue and the local Fire Department. At 6:30 p.m., cake cutting will take place and the organizing committee will be honouring Marlene Stahley and Ingrid Tremblay, two committed community volunteers. “They have been organizing and have really been the main organizers for this event and others for many years,” said Raffle. People are welcome to bring their own picnic dinners, blankets and lawn chairs to the event.

Awards were given out at for the North Island Zone Theatre Festival in Qualicum Beach last week.
The North Island Zone of Theatre BC wrapped up its 2014 Drama Festival on Saturday night with an Awards Ceremony at Thalassa Restaurant. The Festival was hosted May 17 to 24 by ECHO Players at the Village Theatre. Nanaimo Theatre Group’s Production of God of Carnage won the Awards for Best Production, Best Director, Best Female Lead (Sherri McLean), Best Costume Design and Best Sound and Lighting Design. The Best Set went to Claire Guiot for Courtenay Little Theatre’s On Golden Pond which also won the award for Best Male Lead Actor for Tony Arnold. Portal Players production of Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean garnered a Best Female Supporting Actor award for Carrera Schroeder, and ECHO Players’ Mrs. Reynolds and the Ruffian’s Quinn Proud won the award
for Best Male Supporting Actor. Several Awards were also given to Flying Squirrel’s production of Torn Rainbow or Sticks and Stones May Break Me, including Best Ensemble, Best Backstage Coordination, and an Emerging Artist Award for Robbie Granados, and for the whole group, a Matt Shepherd Change the World award. Lesley McVey of ECHO Players was the recipient of the prestigious Donna Lamb Award for service to community theatre. The adjudicator Fran Gebhard commented on the wonderful welcome she had received in Qualicum Beach, and how much she enjoyed the community. Fran commended all those involved in the many aspects of community theatre for their commitment and for continuing to keep raising the bar for theatre in this zone. — Submitted by Alistair McVey

KSS win second provincial title
Defending provincial champions had something to prove on home turf, and they did it in style T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
The Kwalikum Secondary Kondors are back-to-back winners of the AA provincial golf championships, thanks to a 16-shot victory last week at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort. The Kondors came in to the provincials with something to prove and didn’t disappoint, blowing away the competition by 16 shots. The tournament was played under excellent conditions as rain fell the morning of opening day but the sun was out by the shotgun start. KSS got off to a great start on the opening day, shooting a team score of 298 to sit six shots clear of the second place St. Thomas Moore Collegiate. Santiago Bourya led the way for the Kondors on day one, shooting a round of even par 72. Grade 10 Masato Wilson shot a 73, Scott Lemon 76, Tony Trozzo 77 and Cole Morrison 83. “Masato was really the nice surprise on the first day for us,” coach Butch Gayton said. “To

have the number five golfer come out and shoot a 73 was quite the pleasant surprise for us and really put us at an advantage heading in to day two.” Day two was much of the same in terms of weather, the sun shining on the golfers all day long as round two got un-
der way early in the morning. The Kondors had a six-shot lead and would stretch that lead out even more, thanks to a two–under round of 70 from Santiago Bourya. Both Lemon and Trozzo shot the same scores as the previous day (76 and 77, respectively) on day two while Cole
Morrison turned in an 80 and Masato Wilson shot an 83. “Day two was just the perfect day in terms of the shape of the course,” Gayton said. “We had a good first round but were sort of in that position where we weren’t satisfied with the lead, knowing it could slip away from us. To see
Santi get out there and shoot two under was huge and having Scott and Anthony shoot the same scores helped big time.” This brought the AA Provincial title to the Kondors for the second year in a row, this time on their home turf. Last year saw Bourya, Lemon, Morrison, Trozzo and Blair Stewart earning their names on the trophy and this year will have Masato Wilson getting his name on the trophy in place of Stewart, who is also in Grade 10. “It just goes to show that we’ve got some great golf talent here at KSS,” Gayton said. “To have those four kids get their names on this trophy two years in a row is huge and knowing that both Blair and Masato have their name on it too does wonders for them. It was a pleasure to coach all of these kids and see them capture the title two years in a row was just spectacular.” Bourya, Lemon and Morrison are all graduating this year while Wilson, Trozzo and Blair Stewart will be back next year to go for the three–peat.

The Parksville Royals were back in action with three games last week, looking to turn things around after dropping two games to the Victoria Mariners. Wednesday night saw the Royals hosting the Nanaimo Pirates at Inouye–Wallace Field at Springwood Park. The Royals were 2–0 against the Pirates this season. Nanoose Bay’s Josh Anderson got the start on Wednesday and took the loss on the hill as the Royals were thumped 11–1. Anderson went two innings on the mound, giving up four runs, three of them earned, on four hits, with three walks to boot. Errington’s Liam Ballance came on in relief of Anderson and didn’t fare much better, giving up six runs, five
earned, on seven hits and one walk in two innings of work. Parksville’s Andrew Evernden went 1–2 at the plate, driving in the Royals’ only run in the bottom of the first inning. The game was called after the fifth inning at 11–1. “We just weren’t in the game against Nanaimo from the get go,” assistant coach Bruce Biro said. “We started off alright but then things got out of control and we checked out mentally after that. Nanaimo capitalized and came to play on Wednesday.” The Royals went to Vancouver to try their luck against the Cannons for a double header Saturday but the results weren’t much better.
Game one of the double header saw the Cannons light up the Royals for 17 runs, beating them 17–6. Locals Justin Dieleman and Josh Anderson (Nanoose Bay) each drove in one run with Keller Anderson and Len Nakatsuka driving in a run each. Ethan Fox went 2–3 at the dish, collecting two of the four Royals hits in game one. Owen Kelly took the loss, giving up nine runs, eight of them earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts over four innings of work. The back end of the double header wasn’t much better for the Royals, as the Cannons took it to them once again, disposing of them 10–3. errors. Fox had another good game at the plate, going 3–4 with an RBI. Liam Janzen and Owen Kelly had the other two RBI’s in this one for the Royals. Keller Anderson was tagged with the loss with eight runs, but none of them were earned runs. In fact, this game saw the Royals give up 10 runs and not one of them was earned. “I thought our weekend series went well in terms of hitting the ball,” Biro said. “Ethan Fox continues to hit well and we had some moments but it was our errors that really cost us on the weekend. We made too many mistakes and when that happens, chances are you aren’t going to be winning the game.” See a PHOTO, page A34

The Nanaimo Junior A Timbermen were in action on Saturday at Oceanside Place, hosting the Coquitlam Adnacs while riding a five game winning streak. The action was fast and physical all game, giving the fans a glimpse into the world of junior A lacrosse. The Adnacs are sitting in first place in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League thanks to the 8–5 win over the Timbermen, who were ranked as high as seventh in Canada last
week, thanks to their five game win streak. The Adnacs’ win snapped that streak and is the second win in a row for the team out of Coquitlam. This marked the first game the Timbermen have played at Oceanside Place this year and will be their only time in Parksville. The T-Men regularly play their home games at Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo and will also play three games at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Qualicum train station celebrates a century (Editor’s note: Welcome to the second of a series of pages The NEWS will present every two weeks highlighting the history of the region. Qualicum Beach as we know it today was heavily influenced by the arrival of rail service to Vancouver Island. Rail service on Vancouver Island was part of the conditions for British Columbia’s entry into Confederation in 1871. For a variety of economic and political reasons, little happened until 1883 when a contract for construction of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway was drawn up. Three years later, the first timetable saw service between Victoria and Nanaimo go into effect in September 1886. Passenger travel began in Victoria in the morning and left Nanaimo about 2 in the afternoon to return to Victoria in the early evening. Once the initial service was established, many parts of Vancouver Island (including Qualicum Beach) advocated for rail service as the economic benefits were demonstrated early. At this point in history, Qualicum Beach was a settlement. Road arrived to Qualicum Beach in 1894. In 1906 a railway official, Mr. H.E. Beasley was travelling through the area and saw potential. He later became involved with The Merchants Trust & Trading Company, Ltd. said to have created the original town layout. Others saw the potential too and several lobbied to have a train station built in Qualicum Beach. Here’s a March 20, 1913 letter from the developensof the Qualiucm beach GHotel to the Mr. Beasley, the railway official: “March 20, 1913 Dear Sir: In reference to the conversation I had with you today, regarding the station at Qualicum Beach, we are putting in, as you know, a Hotel which will cost us over $50,000, and are spending $10,000 on a Golf Links there. In accordance with your permission, we are stating the fact in our literature, that you will provide a stopping place at Qualicum Beach — and possibly a Station.” The Qualicum Beach Train Station was officially opened in August 1914. It was designed with freight storage, a waiting room and living space for the Station agent and his family. People were still living in the Qualicum Beach station in the 1980’s.

A train arrives at the Qualicum Beach train station during its first year of operation, 1913. The former CPR station was named a federal heritage site October 5, 1993. The Old Train Station Society was formed to restore the train station with support of the Kiwanis and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Qualicum Beach. The Society, started in Jim Storey’s living room one night, raised the funds through various fundraisers including freight shed sales, Dori McGarrigle’s Country Western Musical Theatre, the Town of Qualicum Beach’s water conservation program and $5,000 was contributed by the E&N Railway. An initial estimate of $25,000 was needed for the restoration. A dedicated group of volunteers, some who still live in Qualicum Beach, worked to protect the history of Qualicum Beach by preserving the building. They started by raising the train station and restoring the foundation, then they went on to create what we have today – a Qualicum Beach icon. For many years the QB Chamber of Commerce offered a twice daily train greeter program where volunteers met the train and helped visitors discover how to best experience the community until the train returned from Courtenay and headed back to Victoria. The rest of the building has seen adaptive re-use with various
spaces made available for groups to have offices. Today the upstairs space is used by the Qualicum Beach Spinners and Weavers and the main floor areas are dedicated to the new Digital Arts Facility. The Qualicum Beach Train Station building is owned by the Island Corridor Foundation and leased to the Town of Qualicum Beach. Ian Baird’s 1985 “A Historic Guide to the E&N Railway” is a fascinating account of the development of rail service on Vancouver Island, detailing they types of stations, their design and construction and the economic and social impacts of rail service. As the Qualicum Beach Select Committee for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the opening of the Train Station collects information it is a piecing together of bits and pieces from a wide variety of sources. Collecting this information in one central location is an important function and the collection will later be housed in the Qualicum Beach Museum & Archives. The information will then available for anyone doing research.
