1859: The discovery of gold on the Horsefly River by Peter Dunlevey starts the Cariboo Gold Rush. The junction of Bridge Creek and Little Bridge Creek is a favourite resting place and watering hole for fur traders traveling the Fort Alexandria, Fort George, Fort St. John and Fort Kamloops circuit. The original stopping house is known as Bridge Creek House.

1918: The

who work on the 15,000 acre ranch. The lumber for the lodge comes from the small sawmill Syd Stephenson had erected a mile or two away on Bridge Creek.

Cariboo Wagon Road from Yale north to Soda Creek is completed. William J. Roper pre-empts 320 acres a few miles north of Bridge Creek, and builds a log roadhouse (108 Hotel) north of the road.

1864: Coaches, mule trains and freight wagons move passen-

gers and supplies along the 480-km route, a 52-hour voyage. Bridge Creek House, 100 miles from the jumping off place on the route to fortune (Lillooet), is renamed 100 Mile House. These coaches travel up and down the Cariboo for 50 years until 1915, the end of the stagecoach era.

1872: Thomas

Miller and David Pratt purchase the 100 Mile house and then sell it to Hamilton in 1880.

1887: Indian

Reserve Commissioner O’Reilly creates Canim Lake Indian Reserve lands, 47 miles northeast of 100 Mile House

PGE (Pacific Great Eastern) begins building their railroad from North Vancouver to Squamish, and onward through to Prince George, connecting the Cariboo to the coast. The highest point on the line was Lone Butte where today one of the only two remaining water towers in the province exists.

1932: The Lodge is built by Martin Cecil to house the cowboys

1937: The original five buildings of the 100 Mile House Ranch

1904: Captain

Geoffrey Lancelot Watson builds the “Watson Manor” at Watson Lake, and turns his attention to ranching. He is a breeder of purebred Clydesdale horses and Highland Cattle.

1908: McNeil House is built at 105 Mile House. This house was moved to the 108 Heritage Site in 1979.

1908: The large log Clydesdale Barn - the largest log barn in

1969: Block

Brothers (H&R Block) purchase the 108 Mile Ranch and develop it into a resort community. Today, the 108 Mile Ranch is one of the largest subdivisions in the South Cariboo with a population of over 2,600.

1970: Stan Halcro Memorial Arena is built. Ainsworth Lumber Co. builds its first electrical sawmill at Chasm.

1944: The

1980: 100 Mile Free Press newspaper office burns down, most

Jens brothers begin a small sawmill out at Canim Lake. Abundant stands of timber throughout the South Cariboo draw dozens of port-able sawmill owners in the late 40’s and 50’s.

1949: In

order to establish dwellings in the 100 Mile House area, the Jens brothers enter into a leasing agreement with Lord Martin Cecil. The lease agreement proves to be the first of many from the 15,000 acre estate, which included all of what is now the District of 100 Mile House.

Mile House gets its first RCMP officer, Constable Ron Duncan. Also, the first airplane lands on a grass strip that was the future site of the 100 Mile Airport.

1953: Cariboo Electricity Generation Plant is built and oper-

ated by Ross Marks and Dave Oshanek. It is taken over BC Hydro in 1956.

1955: First Volunteer Fire Department starts, with Chief Ross Marks.

Canada - is built by Gilbert Monroe of Ashcroft, for Captain Watson.

1957-58: The 100 Mile Elementary School is built and opens.

1912: The Marquess of Exeter buys the 15,000 acre 100 Mile

House

1957: First

comes to 100 Mile House. CKBX (The Wolf) Radio goes on the air. records and newspaper archives are lost.

1981: The first Cariboo Marathon X-Country Ski Race is held. 1987: Ainsworth

Lumber Co. buys out Evans Forest Products plants in Lillooet, Savona, and Donald, British Columbia.

1989: Ainsworth Exeter site.

Lumber Co. builds a Strand Board Plant at

Mile House Fire Chief Bob Paterson died while responding to an accident on the 108 Mile Hill. He is the only fire chief in BC history to have ever died in the line of duty. Firefighters from all over BC come with their fire trucks to participate in a procession in his honour.

Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. buys Ainsworth’s Chasm

2003: The new South Cariboo Recreation Centre is built. 2004: West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. buys the Weldwood Division Sawmill at Exeter Site.
