White Rock Pier celebrates centennial The pier is still standing today thanks to a group of bright businessmen and zealous residents Back in the early 1900s, convincing the government to build the White Rock Pier was tricky business. But a group of local realtors and businessmen had a clever plan. They invited the minister of marine and fisheries, John Douglas Hazen, to visit White Rock and see first hand its potential as a major industrial port, similar to those of Vancouver and Seattle. When Hazen arrived, he was forced to use a small floating plank wharf and "got soaked up to the waist," explains Hugh Ellenwood, archives manager at White Rock Museum & Archives, with a laugh. It turns out the quick-witted realtors and businessmen decided to invite the minister at high tide, a time when they knew the existing makeshift pier would be less than adequate. Hazen agreed to secure funds for a better pier and construction began soon after. On Nov. 14, 1914, the White Rock Pier was officially opened to the public.
The dream was to create a bustling port where barges would be loaded with goods to deliver around the world. But the original plan never became reality. Instead, it was recreation that the pier became famous for. For the last 100 years, men, women and children have enjoyed taking leisurely strolls along the wooden planks, often stopping to watch others enjoy the sand and water below. "In picture after picture, no matter what the decade – whether it's yesterday or 1914 – you see people walking up and down the pier. It's always been the thing to do," notes Ellenwood. Back in the early days, the pier's close proximity to the railway station boosted White Rock as a popular vacation destination. Women in long cotton dresses and men donning top-hats stopped to watch sandcastle tournaments and swimming competitions. Dance halls and a roller skating rink were located nearby. Overshadowing any industrial activity, the White Rock Amateur Swimming Association moored its swim tank to the pier and the Great War Veteran Association built a hall on pilings adjacent to it.
Beginning in 1931, union steam ships Lady Alexandra and Lady Cynthia provided recreational cruises from White Rock to Victoria, Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast. They docked until the 1950s. By mid-century, thousands of guests and locals had enjoyed meandering down the pier. Time, however, was not kind and by the 1970s the pier was in danger of being torn down. White Rock residents put up a fight – creating bumper stickers that read "Save the pier. I'm helping, are you?" – and in 1977 it was completely rebuilt, mostly with federal funding, and turned over to the City of White Rock to maintain. In 1982, the pier was designated as a municipal heritage site. "South Surrey wasn't built up at all until the late-'70s and early-'80s so it was a place to get away and recreate," says Ellenwood. Today, in its 100th year, thousands of people still flock to the White Rock Pier each year and it's the site of dozens of community events. Canada Day by the Bay July 1, White Rock Beach This annual celebration spans the waterfront from East to West Beach and includes a pancake breakfast, art displays and live music. Bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting and a sandcastle competition will keep kids busy for hours.

A group of actors performs a festive play last year during the annual Christmas on the Peninsula, which takes place Nov. 29 at White Rock Community Centre. this festival is now celebrating its 65th year and promises to offer plenty of affordable fun, including a children's carnival, parade, beach games, food, live entertainment and more. Each year around 100,000 visitors enjoy the festival.
July 11-13, Uptown/Waterfront Now in its 35th year, this highoctane event features dozens of elite local and international cyclists in gruelling climbs and a short circuit race. The weekend wraps up with the 130-km Peace Arch News Road Race, which takes cyclists through White Rock's hilly seaside.

July 18-20, Ocean Park Village, 16 Avenue & 128 Street This festival kicks off with an openair movie night on Friday, followed by an outdoor vendors market Saturday and Sunday, complete with live music, food and an art show at Ocean Park Hall. A proposed beach party at the Village Pub will take place on July 19. For your guilty pleasure, there is a free pancake breakfast on Sunday morning and in the afternoon there is a golf putting contest.

Great Pumpkin Walk/Run Oct. 26, Peace Arch Hospital It's all about fun at this eighthannual five- or one-km run/walk, benefitting the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Dress up in your Halloween costume to really get into the spirit. Last year, 1,000 runners and walkers participated, raising $75,000.

Marine Drive and Cypress Street One of the most popular spots on Marine Drive's East Beach, the plaza, located on traditional homelands of the Semiahmoo First Nation, is best known for its two totem poles, designed by Haida artist Robert Davidson and Coast Salish artist Susan Point.

Peninsula athletics in full swing Looking to get your sports fix this summer? For the Semiahmoo Peninsula sports fan, there are plenty of options close to home, as events throughout White Rock, Surrey and Cloverdale are set for the coming months. Here is a selection of the area's best events:
Canadian Open This year, the Canadian Open – now in its fifth year since replacing the Canada Cup event which had been held since the early-1990s – is set to run from July 11-21. The women's fastpitch event is among the world's largest and most popular, routinely featuring top youth and women's teams from all manner of countries. The 10-day showcase is split into four divisions – international, elite, Futures (under 19) and Showcase (under 16) – and in the past has seen more than 80 teams, and more than 1,300 players. The event is a popular draw for fans
at both Softball City (2201 148 St.) and Cloverdale Athletic Park (6330 168 St.). This year's event comes on the heels of last fall's announcement that Surrey – headed up by the Canadian Open's organizing committee – will host the 2016 Women's World Fastpitch Championships. Tour de White Rock That same July weekend, just a few blocks south of the softball action, White Rock will host the three-day Tour de White Rock, which is part of BC Superweek. The cycling series – which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2014 – begins the evening of Friday, July 11 with the hill climb. The climb is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and spectators – who line the streets to take in the action – will see Tour riders test their power and

endurance by pedaling up Buena Vista Avenue, between Oxford Street to just past Martin Drive. The following day, the Tour de White Rock heads uptown for the criterium race. In the criterium cyclists zip around a short, one-kilometre course that includes Johnston Road, Five Corners, White Rock City Hall and White Rock Elementary. The criterium races are among the most exciting of the weekend, as riders – cycling within mere centimetres of each other – reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. The first criterium race takes off at 3:15 p.m., with the final event of the day – the men's pro division – going at 6 p.m. The final event on the Tour calendar hits the streets of White Rock on the morning of July 13, with the main event – the Peace Arch News Road Race. The race – which begins at 9 a.m. – features a 130-km men's event and an 80-km distance for the women's race. › see page 40

Baseball There's myriad other athletic endeavours around town if the aforementioned two aren't up your alley. Local ball diamonds have been abuzz since early spring, as the South Surrey Athletic Park-based White Rock Tritons – which have U16 and U18 squads – aim for playoff spots in the competitive BC Premier Baseball League. Softball teams are busy all spring and summer, too, as the Surrey Storm, White Rock Renegades and South Surrey-White Rock Thunder softball associations play regularly throughout the city, including at Softball City, Sunnyside Park and both the Cloverdale and Newton athletic parks.
Competitive swimming Local pools are also a hub of activity, as Peninsula-based swim and dive clubs – including the Pacific Sea Wolves, White Rock Divers, White Rock Amateur Swim Association, White Rock Wave and the Crescent Beach Swimming Club – stay busy in the water, competing in meets throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. Synchronized swimming is also growing in popularity, thanks to clubs like the Surrey-based BC Aquasonics, which routinely win provincial and national trophies. The local aquatic scene is set to grow this year, too – a new pool is currently under construction in Grandview Heights.

Sandcastles, sun and a ton of fun Relax at Peninsula beaches and swimming pools Looking for relief from the hot sun this summer? The Semiahmoo Peninsula is home to a number of beaches and pools that will help you cool off – or soak up some rays. Whether it's sandy beaches and salt water you're looking for or an indoor pool to work on your cardio, it's all here in your community. Here are some popular spots in White Rock and South Surrey:
Crescent Beach Crescent Beach, situated on the eastern shores of Boundary Bay, is a relaxing, low-key alternative to the hustle and bustle of nearby White Rock Beach in the summer. Whether the tide is out or in, one will find a whole host of activities at their fingertips. It's a great place for playing on the beach, kite flying, ice cream, kayaking, picnic, searching for crabs and is undeniably one of the best swimming beaches in the region. A lifeguard is on duty from July through August to keep an eye on swimmers in the roped off area. Another perk for visitors: free parking.
White Rock Beach Thousands of visitors from all over flock to White Rock Beach every summer to dive from the pier, take a dip in the ocean and sun bathe. Named after the large boulder deposited on its shoreline, this charming oceanside community is located along an eight-kilometre stretch of sandy beach. The beach is always bustling with activity and excitement, especially around Marine Drive, where the sounds of music and laughter echo from the restaurant patios filled with patrons. At low tide, children build sandcastles, play frisbee and explore the marine life lurking below the seaweed. Swimmers note: Be aware that White Rock Beach does not have a lifeguard on duty at any time throughout the year. Make sure you have a credit card or change to pay the parking meter.

Year round, the South Surrey Indoor Pool, measuring 37-metres in length, is a popular hotspot for swimmers of all ages and experience levels. With admission one has access to six 25-metre lanes, a dive tank and two diving boards. There's also a children's pool, a whirlpool and two dry heat saunas. All swim sessions are fun-filled and interactive. The "Fun Staff" lead activities and games throughout the afternoon and evening public sessions and are sure to leave you with a big smile on your face. Located at 14988 57 Ave., the Tong Louie Family YMCA offers a range of swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. The facility includes a toddler pool, 25-metre lanes for swimming lengths as well as a smaller special-use pool.
Sunnyside Outdoor Pool As soon as the sun begins to really sizzle on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, the Sunnyside Outdoor Pool on 26 Ave. and 152 St. in South Surrey becomes a haven for many. The gates open for public swims from mid-May to Sept. 1. Swimming lessons take place at the pool throughout the summer.
