Address your

FINANCIAL CONCERNS and take control of your

FINANCES!

The roles played by women have changed dramatically over the years. Modern women now wear many hats, one of which is money manager. That’s true for women managing their personal finances or those overseeing their family’s finances. But managing finances can be intimidating for anyone, regardless of gender. Oftentimes, a careful assessment of your attitude toward money is a great way to make the process of managing your finances a lot less stressful. A great first step when

managing your finances is to identify any concerns you have about money. Being able to pinpoint the particulars will help you develop a plan of action. For example, if you want to invest in stocks but don’t know a bull from a bear market, acknowledging this shortcoming can help you learn the necessary facts to get started. Once such concerns have been addressed, you’re likely to feel more comfortable and confident about managing your money and can start taking steps to do just that.

★ CONSULT WITH AN ESTATE PLANNER

The earlier you start the better off you will be with regard to planning for the future. It is not an admission of weakness if you rely on the help of financial experts to guide you in the right direction.

★ GET TALKING ABOUT YOUR CONCERNS

Talk to other women in similar situations. You may find that you share the same concerns. Discussing common concerns or financial strategies can help you in your own endeavors.

Women in Business

★ THINK POSITIVELY AND VALUE

YOUR STRENGTHS

Embracing your strengths, even if those strengths have little to do with money management, can help you gain control of your finances. Perhaps you are not a financial whiz but your networking skills have left you with a vast network of friends and family in various professions. You may be able to use those connections to gain access to experts in the financial field who can guide you through the questions you may have.

★ KNOW YOUR CURRENT

FINANCIAL STATUS

Feigning ignorance is not the way to get started. It is important to honestly assess your financial situation so you can effectively handle those finances going forward. Take stock of your income, expenditures and what you have in savings. Keep abreast of any changes in your accounts and stay current with business news and issues that may play a direct or indirect role on your finances.

★ CONTINUE WORKING,

EVEN IF IT’S ONLY PART-TIME

A study by the Women’s Institute For a Secure Retirement found that a college-educated 25-year-old female will earn $500,000 less than a male counterpart in a similar position over her lifetime because of sporadic employment associated with caring for family, including children and aging parents. That worries many young women who have previously thought about taking time off from work to raise families. Even if you may want to scale down your work schedule, you may not want to completely remove yourself from the workforce so you can remain in touch and current.

T

hough it’s unwise to judge a book by its cover, the image a business projects can make a big difference in how well it is received. Image is vital when it comes to the corporate world, and it behooves business owners to reflect on the message and image they hope to convey. Kristie Rimmele, a business consultant and the president of Branding on the Net, states that 75 percent of buying decisions are based on emotion. A stronger corporate brand image can boost stock prices, help a business be better received and offer a bigger return on advertising dollars. A study from the marketing and research firm Yankelovich Partners found that more than 50 percent of consumers have a more negative opinion about advertising than they did a few years ago, and they feel overwhelmed with marketing messages. Individuals tasked with creating a positive image for their company or promoting an image should keep such feedback in mind when assessing

their company’s image. Here are some ways to begin.

• Decide what needs to be changed. Feedback from

current customers can be a key way to learn which aspects of the business need to be changed. Don’t be afraid to ask for customer reviews and offer incentives to those who answer promptly and honestly. After gathering information, see if there is a common in the customer responses and analyze what can be done to turn things around if anything negative comes to the surface.

• Talk to employees.

Employees are in the trenches every day. They get first-hand information from customers and see the day-to-day operations of a business. Supervisors who are outside of the daily workings of the business may not realize which areas of a company’s image may need improvement. The physical look of the office, the way employees dress and operate and other factors may have a trickle-down effect on a business’ image.

Women in Business

• Further develop your logo. A logo is

an important part of a business image. An attractive logo can attract new customers in a matter of seconds, so be thoughtful when designing your logo. If need be, hire a professional designer to help you use your logo to develop a solid brand image.

• Tell your story. The story of how a business came to be can set that business apart from its competitors. The relationship between a business and its customers is very often built on emotion, and gaining a loyal customer base may be as simple as sharing a compelling story as to how the business started. Consider hiring a public relations firm to help you analyze which parts of your business’ story are most worthy of highlighting.

may be hard for customers to digest. It’s better to gradually implement changes once you have identified which aspects of the business image can use an overhaul.

• Get involved. Businesses that take an

active role in the community may be better received

than those that do not. Volunteering time or money at a town or city level can spread positive feelings about a business. Once a business image has been changed, it is important to be confident with the new persona and remain consistent, especially when the changes seem to be working for the better.

The process of finding a new job has changed dramatically over the last decade-plus. Whereas professionals once printed their resumes and mailed them to hiring managers in response to job postings, nowadays resumes and cover letters are largely uploaded via the Internet or emailed directly to a company’s human resources department.

A strong cover letter may not guarantee you land a good job, but a poor cover letter may guarantee you won’t. prospective employer. When responding to a job posting that listed a specific contact, address your cover letter to that person rather than beginning the letter with, “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” This is your opportunity to show how your work history makes you a qualified candidate for a specific position. Remember to be concise but relate a specific example that illustrates how your work history would help you thrive in the position for which you’re applying. An effective cover letter should help you stand out among your fellow applicants, and expressing some knowledge about the organization can do just that. The goal here is to illustrate how you and the organization are a good fit, so you don’t need to go overboard or be too specific.

Tailoring a resume to a specific job or employer is one way individuals can stand out among fellow job seekers. Resumes themselves have changed as well, and professionals looking for a new job might want to tweak their existing resumes in the following ways to increase their chances of finding a new job.

Show accomplishments rather than responsibilities. Many hiring managers are experienced enough to know the responsibilities of a certain job title. So instead of listing your responsibilities as a Regional Sales Manager, list what you accomplished during your time in that position. Be as specific as possible, listing any sales goals you exceeded and awards you might have won. Your achievements are what set you apart from other candidates with similar work histories, so use your resume to highlight those achievements instead of listing your responsibilities.

Keep things brief.

Your resume should highlight those accomplishments and that should be enough to secure an interview. When you get that interview, that’s when you can go into greater detail. But try to

keep your resume to one or two pages.

Remove older positions.

Older positions, such as a long-ago college internship, have no place on a seasoned professional’s resume. On a similar note, if you have long since changed careers, you may not need to include much about your previous positions in another field, especially if your work experience in your new field is extensive. Hiring managers likely won’t be interested in a past work history if it’s irrelevant to your current field.

Many professionals are hesitant to upload their resumes to a business networking site, out of fear that their current employers will feel they are looking for a new job. But so many professionals are now members of such sites that it’s no longer associated with a job search as much as it is an easy way to keep in touch with professional contacts.

Consider a new format.

Few job postings request applicants to send in their resumes via mail, so unlike the days of old, you probably won’t be printing your resume and mailing it to prospective employers. Consider uploading your resume as a PDF or as plain text, as such formats are less likely to become scrambled during when they are uploaded or downloaded.

professional networking site.

an Armstrong girl CARA BRADY Morning Star Staff

Patti Noonan has always been proud to say she’s a B.C. girl and even prouder to be an Armstrong girl. She and her husband, Barry, have lived in Armstrong for 16 years and will definitely retire there. “When we moved here I wanted to volunteer and meet people so I started to come into the chamber office and it kind of grew on me. I liked it so much that I was thrilled when the job came up,” she said. “Every day is different. What I like best is meeting the people, the business people, the people who are visiting, the local people. It’s always interesting to talk to people who are thinking of relocating here, young families or people retiring or people wanting to live in a good community where they can start a business or work from home. It’s amazing the people in the area who are now able to work anywhere in the world, either by being online or going somewhere else for part of the time. “Two weeks ago we had eight enquiries about relocation in five days. It gives you a feeling of gratitude when you can tell people all the great things about where you live.” With more people choosing to call Armstrong and Spallumcheen home, the community becomes more attractive all the time. “We’re not a sleepy little rural town. We have a vibrant community with local businesses of all kinds, artists, local foods and a huge vol-

unteer base. There is a good spirit of entrepreneurship,” she said, citing businesses that might not be expected in a smaller city, like Pleasant Valley Quilting, Chocaliro and Sea Stars Kids Boutique. She noted that while all members of the business community are supportive of each other, there seems to be particular support for women with successful women in banking, real estate and as independent business owners. Noonan also likes the opportunity to meet people from chambers of commerce around the province and find out how they serve their communities. “They’re quite different. Some places have no visitors’ centres and don’t sponsor any events like we do and others do much the same things we do with a lot of events and community involvement for everyone,” she said. It was interesting to look back at the area’s history for the centennial celebrations last year. “I think that in the past 100 years, the sense of community has stayed the same and has probably even grown stronger. But people are looking forward to the future, to find ways that we can have a community where it is viable for families to live and work without losing what we have. We see an increasing need for care options for seniors and for day care for children. We want to make sure our growth is balanced with something for people of all

ages. A good thing that is happening is that with people revitalizing the older building downtown, they are often putting in attractive living space above business locations which many people want.” The official community plan provides for growth while keeping the area’s heritage feel. There are also plans for green trails to link everywhere eventually. Planning is particularly important as the town cannot outgrow its five-square-kilometre footprint. “I love the trails, especially in the spring time. You can walk and meet neighbours and chat. I love my office because I can walk to the post office and talk to everyone and when people pass by the office window they can wave and I can wave back,” said Noonan. “We like to showcase our community through seasonal events. Right now, we’re working on Funtastic and Canada Day. Of course, we love IPE and hope that people who come for that will come back and see what we have to offer for the rest of the year.” Chamber-sponsored events include Pumpkin Light-Up, Christmas festivities and the new Cheese Festival set to take place Nov. 8. Noonan does a lot of work on promotional materials, brochures and maps and is active on social media, something she admits she had to learn although it’s lots of fun for her now. “I love meeting so many people, in person and online and especially hearing back from people that they think they’ve made the right decision to move here. It’s a great community that pulls together when there’s a need,” she said. “I could never do this without the support of the board of directors,

Cyenthia Cyenthia decided it was time for a new beginning. She moved her salon, Styles on Mane, which has been operating in the downtown core since 1995, to a cozy studio in her home. She is still passionate about her craft and enjoys the one-on-one with her clients but Cyenthia is beginning to slow things down so she may enjoy the finer things in life. She has been blessed with grandchildren and would like to spend more time with them. Having less responsibility with not having a staff, she would like to travel a bit more. One thing that hasn’t changed at Styles on Mane, a coffee and a smile is always available. Cyenthia has been a stylist for over 30 years. She invites you to a new hair experience and looks forward to seeing you soon.

Sally Benson I went to Jazzercise class for the first time in 2009. After only attending 15 classes, I knew I had found my calling. I had worked in the fitness industry for a few years back in Calgary, but Jazzercise was by far the most fun and a way more effective workout. I became certified in 2010 and taught as an associate for 3.5 years in Grand Forks. I had more to give, so my family and I moved to Vernon last August and I opened my own studio last November! Jazzercise combines dance aerobics, jazz dance, yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, and strength training all in a one hour class. All routines are choreographed to various music styles, a little something for everyone!

GET ED in a crowded IC NOTFinding a new job is online job postings provide

never an easy task. That task grew even more difficult over the last half decade, when a struggling economy forced many companies to lay off workers and institute hiring freezes.

Standing out in a crowded job market has always been tough, but many professionals find it even more difficult to get noticed now, when many companies request prospective employees apply for job postings via the Internet. That process can be frustrating, as even the most qualified applicants can easily get lost among the myriad of workers all applying for the same position. Go the extra mile when sending your application. Many

a link or an email address where applicants can fill out an application or send their resumes. This is a necessary step, and applicants should follow the directions in the posting. But applicants who really want to get noticed can take the extra step of finding the contact information for the company’s hiring manager and sending their resume directly to that person’s email address. Include the title of the position you’re applying for in the subject line of your email, and cut and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. In addition to sending your email to the company’s hiring manager, consider CC’ing the person who might be your boss if you were to get the position.

Rachelle Dixon Locally made, quality, designer clothing at affordable prices! After celebrating 15 years of business it was time to take a look back to where my dream for Square One started. My dream of filling my store with all my own creations and share my love of fashion with the world. From a home based sewing business to my newest retail location, it has been quite a journey. The first downtown location was open four years when we found the level our own manufacturing growing so we needed more space. With the purchase of a commercial building, SQUARE ONE APPAREL & SALON moved across 30th Avenue and re-opened in our newest space December of 2011. With the addition of a fabulous hair salon right in the store, we now dress and style Vernon’s women from head to toe. My new 2014 spring/summer women’s collection is in full production. Being made right here in our store, there is new items hitting the floor daily. As well as shipping out to almost 20 other retail locations around BC, Alberta, and North West. From a full line of athletic/yoga and dance apparel to a wide range of women‘s fashions, including accessories, bags, jewellery and scarves, we are a full service fashion outlet with new collections each season including VERNON’S BEST SELECTION OF LADIES JEANS! The team and I here at Square One are consistently bringing a little much needed style and flare to downtown. With the difficult times many of us have seen here locally for the last few years a lot has changed, but one thing remains the same … We all still have to get dressed every day. So here at Square One we got ya covered! As time has evolved so has the fashion needs of our customers. So as a designer I just simply start with beautiful basic’s … Shall we say! “TAKING IT BACK TO SQUARE ONE” What I love to create and wear myself, comfortable, affordable fashions that I can wear in every aspect of my life. So don’t forget to stop every now and again, and take some time to look and feel beautiful. Because after all…life is like a fashion show, so make sure every step you take, is with your best dressed self forward!”

Tighten things up. Your resume should reflect your work experience, but you want to focus primarily on the experience and skills that are relevant to the position. You can list past positions or internships you’ve had, but keep the synopsis of those positions brief if they bear little relevance to the position for which you’re applying. Make your resume downloadfriendly. Applying for positions but getting little response despite your qualifications? Chances are your resume might not be download-friendly. Bullet points and boxes might look good to you, but if the hiring manager on the receiving end of your resume does not have the same version of the program you’re using, that resume might look like a scrambled mess by the time the it’s downloaded. A PDF, for example, is a format that’s easy to download and unlikely to scramble. Beware of hyperlinks. Adding hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it’s a hit, a hiring manager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring manager’s email address, then those same hyperlinks might be

relegating your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they’re employed under the right circumstances. Include social media profiles. More and more companies want employees who are familiar with social media, which can work to an applicants’ advantage or prove detrimental. If you have been responsible regarding your use of social media, conducting yourself in a professional matter and even benefiting your existing employer, by all means share these profiles with potential employers. But if you have traditionally used social media purely as a social tool and not in a professional manner, then it bears little relevance to your job search and likely won’t help you stand out for the right reasons.

Bev Sheldon This is my 20th year in my current career. The personal growth, fun, travel, and satisfaction that I have experienced during those years has been absolutely fantastic! I love working with my clients as well as my team, which is expanding throughout the Okanagan as well as Alberta, to help change their lives. Mike and I have been married for 38 years and it has been an ever changing adventure. We have a growing family which includes our three beautiful grandsons. Students who are years behind in reading, math, and/or spelling catch up and go on to excel at school. This unique program, directed by Ms. Leanne Topham, a specialized learning therapist, has helped students who have suspected or diagnosed learning disabilities (like dyslexia) to overcome their challenges. At Potentials Learning Centre, the biggest reward is to see a student finally ‘get it’, and see the difference that also makes in his or her confidence and self-esteem. It strengthens auditory, visual, and tactile perception, which actually helps develop the brain’s ability to learn.

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre may not have a resident ghost but it does have a secret. The large, decorative light in the foyer is known as the ‘no gossip zone’ because it echoes back what is said below it. So patrons are reminded not to share secrets there as they enjoy refreshments at intermission. Pamela Burns Resch, executive director of the centre, and Erin Kennedy, artistic director, are hard at work planning which performances will take place in the coming season. The delightful, eclectic mix presented at the theatre happens in three ways. “We go to shows, connect with community festivals and events and develop relationships with companies working in various disciplines. Sometimes we work with other communities to create tours. For example, we’re now working with organizations in Vancouver and Victoria with a group, Compagnie Kafig, which has a French choreographer and Brazilian dancers, to have them come here,” said Kennedy. “I stay connected locally to see who in our community would connect with which shows and to bring something for niche demographics as well, maybe a little something that will stretch people’s boundaries. I follow up every suggestion but things can’t always work out to come here.” The centre is also available for rentals to touring and local groups. “That brings another flavour and texture to what we offer and we often get very good shows, things we might not get otherwise, that way. The touring artists tell us they like the theatre and find the audiences really warm and appreciative,” said Burns Resch. The other component in making the theatre attractive and accessible to everyone in the community is the youth performances. “It gives young people a chance to do their best in a professional theatre setting. We always have some shows that will appeal to youth so that they can see a professional show onstage and often have a chance to go backstage and meet and talk to the actors and crew,” said Kennedy. “I’ve been involved in theatre and the performing arts pretty

well all my life, lighting, set design, stage management and technical direction at a time when there were not many women in technical direction. I love this job, how I’m always learning.” She is also technical director for the centre, which means she makes sure everything gets done backstage so the show goes on onstage. With some shows bringing as many as 15 of their own crew members and others needing all the technical work done by the centre, she’s always busy. Burns Resch has a visual arts background. She owned an art gallery in Winnipeg and is former executive director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery. and has been at the Performing Arts Centre since 2009. “We are always looking for more ways that the centre can be part of the community,” she said. “We could accommodate more rentals and off-season activities. We are planning youth spring break and summer theatre camps.” The centre has to take some down time for maintenance but there are always new things happening. The On Stage concert series had a cabaret setting on the stage for an intimate performance for 110 patrons. Morning Melodies is a series of chamber music concerts for people who don’t like to go out at night and has been well attended. Pizza Parties let high school age youth eat, watch a show, and then ask questions of the actors. Other series featuring a variety of performances let people see their favourites while sampling something unfamiliar. Kennedy likes the shows that bring children, parents and grandparents all out together. “It’s important for children to be exposed to the arts when they are young. When we look back in history, we see that it is the arts that tell the stories of civilizations. I love seeing children at a live performance. We had the national puppeteer of Iceland, who let the children pet the puppets afterwards and created a real connection with them. With a live performance, you know that it will never happen again in exactly the same way. Even if something goes wrong there is a connect with the artists and the show goes on.”

Part of the difficulty of balancing work and family life is that the challenge is ongoing. The threat of losing your work-life balance is never too far away, but there are steps men and women can take to regain that balance once it’s been lost.

*

Start documenting your activities.

No one operates at 100 percent efficiency all the time, but balancing obligations at work with those at home is especially difficult when time is routinely lost to trivial matters or tasks at work that can be delegated to others. These time-consuming tasks have a tendency to add up, but professionals rarely take note of the smaller tasks or distractions that cost them time. Start documenting your activities on a daily basis, jotting down how each hour of your day is spent, both at home and at work.

Do this for several weeks, after which time a pattern will likely develop, and you can see where you are wasting time and where you are being most efficient with your time. When you sit down to examine your notes, look for ways to free up time without sacrificing the quality of your work or the quality of time you spend with your family. Don’t be afraid to make changes.

*

Don’t go it alone.

Teamwork is important at home and around the office and can help overburdened professionals regain their worklife balance. If you tend to go it alone in the office, reach out to your colleagues more often, seeking their help on projects and offering your help in return. This can drastically cut back on the hours you spend in the office, giving you more quality time at home. Assign tasks around the house so you aren’t doing chores during the time you do have at home. Split cooking duties with your spouse or even the kids if they’re old enough and delegate other household tasks as well. Such tasks can be tackled while you’re at work so the family can spend more time together each night and on weekends.

Stop emulating Atlas.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was condemned to standing at the

edge of the Earth and holding the weight of Uranus on his shoulders. Many professionals can no doubt empathize with Atlas, even if taking such weight on their shoulders was selfinflicted. Regaining work-life balance may require taking some of that weight off of your shoulders by learning to respectfully decline extra projects around the office or in your personal life. You can still pitch in on special projects at work without spearheading them. Cutting back on your obligations is a great way to reduce stress and free up time to focus on the things that mean the most to you.

*

Think outside the box.

If you have examined your daily activities and commitments but can’t seem to find any ways to regain your work-life balance, start looking for unique ways to make the time you spend at work and the time you spend at home more proportionate. Consider telecommuting one or two days per week to free up time to spend with your family. If moving is an option, consider moving closer to your office so you aren’t spending so much time commuting to and from work each day. Sometimes that balance requires a little creativity and some give-and-take with both your employer and your family.

A Love Affair With Her Paint Brush Patricia Neil Lawton has been in love with image making since earliest memory….. A Life-time Affair. She began teaching fellow playmates at age eight and has been instructing drawing and painting, as well as painting continuously herself, through all the ensuing years….. Patricia spent many years teaching for The Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr), Vancouver College, Bella Bella Secondary School, OUC, as well as traveling throughout the Province. For interested Art Lovers, whether they want to commission a painting or would like to take lessons, Patricia can be reached via Vernon Art Centre at 250-542-6243 or her Atelier at 250-545-6497. Her background in art began in Eaton’s Display Department where she designed window sho-cards and wrote the many verses for Eaton’s famous Christmas Display Windows. She moved on to a Women’s and Children’s Department Store on Granville street as Marketing Manager and drew all the Fashion Illustrations plus wrote the ad copy for this store as well as ‘free-lancing’ as illustrator for fourteen other fashion houses. Patricia taught the first “Fashion Illustration” courses for the Vancouver School of Art offered in that city. She was then hired by Pacific Press to work in the Art Department of the Vancouver Sun, then an ad to teach Art in the small Native community of Bella Bella (Waglisla) called to her and she and her husband moved north. The Lawtons moved to Vernon in 1984 and she was soon teaching courses in advertising and fashion illustration for OUC; plus fun drawing courses for Vernon’s Art Centre. From the beginning, Patricia has advocated “giving” to Vernon Jubilee Hospital, where she was instrumental in starting the major fundraiser to purchase our first CT Scanner and served on the Hospital Foundation Board for five years. She also donates her art to Hospice House and was on the board to raise the building funds for Vernon’s Women’s Transition House. Patricia is presently involved with Vernon’s Cancer Clinic, donating fifty original works towards raising $450,000 in an on-line Art Auction to raise funding for new Digital Mammography equipment. For the past twenty years she has served as primary judge for the Vernon District Art Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to the top graduating grade twelve Art Students of the North Okanagan. Patricia’s aim in life is to be a useful, serving citizen in her home town, a happy woman with her life’s companion, Peter, and their pet “Lacey”, a fine, polite dog who is the source of many hours of fun and laughter in the Lawton household. Patricia’s paintings are in corporate and private collections in the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, the U.S.A. Japan, South America, Mexico and Canada. Her works have been published by the prestigious San Diego watercolour Society, for their annual International Shows. IDEAS

to Grow your Business Sarah McRae My husband William started Keshiki Gardening in the spring of 1981, I joined him shortly after. We had no idea of the great adventure that we had embarked upon. At that time there weren’t any cell phones, computers were a rarity, the biggest screen you could get for your t.v. was 21 inches to view both channels available and business was conducted with a hand shake! (btw no one had even heard of bottled water)!! We have seen many changes over thirty three years in business but the one thing that has not changed is our commitment to our customers. Whether it is grounds maintenance, irrigation services or snow removal we pride ourselves in keeping updated and educated so we can give our customers the best service possible. We find great joy in our work, our customers and our life in the Okanagan Valley. Many of our loyal customers have been with us from the beginning, I believe that says something about our work ethic. Besides work, I also have a great time at Zumba, enjoy a good book and most of all visits with our sons Jonathan and Christopher who are now off on their own adventures.

Dr. Shelby Entner Some new and exciting opportunities have happened this year for Dr. Shelby Entner! She is pleased to announce the opening of Vero Health Naturopathic Care, a vision she has created with her team of health care practitioners and staff to help meet the demand for natural medicine in the Okanagan. After over 13 years of clinical practice, Dr. Entner saw an opportunity to expand her services and has opened Vero Health in the same location of her last clinic, Okanagan Natural Medicine. Known for her easy going, realistic approach to treatment programs, her patients appreciate her ability to take complex information and explain it in a manner that is straight forward and relevant to understand. Dr. Entner is one of only a few physicians in BC who has been accredited by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in bio-identical hormones. Her specialty and passion is to help women to make sense of their health and her clinical expertise is in all aspects of women’s health – from puberty to menopause. Her experience in women’s health has made her a sought after speaker and expert in many North American conferences, magazines and local events. Dr. Entner also enjoys a practice that helps men and women with digestive issues, skin concerns, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, stress related illnesses, fertility, pediatrics and detoxification. Besides running a busy practice and trying to figure how to blog, Shelby also enjoys her family time with her husband Ryan, son Aidan (11) and daughter Senna (8). She is looking forward to lots of camping this summer and enjoying the Okanagan summer!

etting a startup off the ground is a considerable and rewarding achievement. But once a business has achieved a certain level of success, business owners often find themselves wondering what to do next. Growing a business may not

prove as challenging as turning it from a startup into a successful enterprise, but business owners often agonize over the best way to grow their businesses. The following are a few ideas to grow your business so you can build on your initial success.

Roxanne Petruk, RMT Roxanne is dedicated to helping people live a life of vitality. In her massage therapy practise at Vero Health, she provides comprehensive massage care. She is excited about sharing her focused training in visceral manipulation and is passionate about helping her clients achieve their optimal health. Her education in visceral manipulation allows her to witness the bodies amazing ability to heal itself. Pregnancy, abdominal surgery, infection, injuries, and food sensitivities, can all affect the tissues surrounding our organs, leaving us with a variety of symptoms including acid reflux, bladder/ bowel dysfunction, bloating, and musculoskeletal pain that we wouldn’t commonly attribute to viscera. When not massaging, Roxanne enjoys hiking with her dogs, gardening, and time with her family.

Ashley Piderman, R. Ac. Vero Health is pleased to welcome Ashley to our team as a licensed acupuncturist. A graduate of the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences in Nelson, BC, Ashley completed her degree as class valedictorian and brings to the Okanagan a passionate interest in helping patients with Traditional Chinese Medicine. With a special interest in digestive issues, autoimmune illness, mental/emotional issues as well as pain management, she is excited about establishing herself in the community and working with patients at Vero Health. Covered by many extended health plans, acupuncture can play a major role in helping people with both acute and chronic health concerns. In her down time, Ashley can be found curled up with a good book, drawing, playing guitar and going to comic book conventions and blogging about her adventures!

Open a new location. Physical expansion is often the first idea that comes into business owners’ minds when they are thinking about how to grow their businesses. But before deciding to open a second location, consider consumer trends to determine if your company has staying power, and economic trends to determine if the economy is healthy enough to support both your initial location and any additional locations you plan to open. Another thing to consider before opening a new location is your management style. If that style is very hands-on, then who will manage your new location, or your existing one if you plan to oversee things at the new store? Physical expansion can be good for business, but it’s often most successful when business owners have a solid management team already in place, which allows owners to spend time at both locations.

Diversify your offerings. The Small Business Administration notes that diversifying is a strong growth strategy, providing multiple streams of income that can help business owners survive the slower months when sales tend to dip. Businesses known for a

particular product may want to offer complementary products or services or import or export others’ products. Startups often credit loyal customer bases when citing their reasons for surviving their first few years, and such customer bases already trust your brand. Expanding that brand to include complementary products or services is a logical next step to grow your business and build on the credibility you worked so hard to achieve with your customer base.

Lindsay Anderson Chicken Little Childhood Outfitters is the best place in town to find everything from the most practical to unique baby gifts. There is also a great selection of quality children’s clothing and shoes from infant up to 10 years. Lindsay’s inspiration for going into the baby/children’s retail business was her two children, Ethan 8 ½ & Lauren 6. She is always looking for quality, affordable items to sell at the store and has had a great opportunity to try most of them out. Customer service is what Lindsay and her staff strive to provide at every opportunity. Lindsay would like to thank her wonderful staff, Judy, Jackie and Jamie, for all of their hard work & dedication. She would also like to thank her customers for their ongoing feedback & support. At Chicken Little we know you have many choices out there and we greatly appreciate that we are one of them.

Form an alliance with other businesses.

Rather than diversifying their product offerings, some business owners have found it’s easier and more profitable to form an alliance with other businesses who already sell complementary products. Such an alliance can be good for both businesses, as each can expand its customer base without the kind of effort it takes to open a new location or the cost of producing new products. Other businesses already have lists of prospective customers who may need your products, and vice versa. Alliances can be the most effective and quickest ways to grow a business, not to mention the least expensive and timeconsuming.

It all started with a chocolate ginger cookie. In December 2007, Kyla MacAulay, who had been working as a recruiter for WestJet in Calgary, decided to move back to Vernon so her two sons could be closer to their grandparents. “I started making cookies for the Bean Scene and someone from Tolko liked them and asked me to do lunch for them,” she said. “It was word of mouth and community support that helped things grow. I was working out of the Intermezzo kitchen and they taught me how to cook. It was amazing. My parents (Margaret and Richard Heape) were helping me make sandwiches.” Then she met Sarah Pruckl at Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts and they became partners, with Pruckl as event coordinator in Gumtree Catering, named for MacAulay’s Australian father and the song her children like to sing. The Nexus program at the North Okanagan Employment Enhancement Society helped with the details of setting up the business. They bought their present site, with three kitchens, in the Alpine Centre, in 2009. The business has 25 employes and doubles that number in the summer. “What I love about Vernon is that people are willing to try new things and they gave us a chance,” said

MacAulay. “We’re lucky with our staff members who share our vision. We are able to find most of our staff locally and we look first for a good attitude. We can teach someone to make soup but we can’t teach them to be awesome.” Pruckl, who grew up in England, brought with her training and experience in hotel and catering management. “We’re all passionate about Gumtree,” she said. “Our executive chef Billy Sanderson is amazing. We do a lot of research and get creative and he makes it with his own touch. Sometimes we bring him a picture and say, ‘Can we make this?’ We taste when we travel and bring back ideas and he’s there for us. And he’s mentoring two youth in the culinary arts program.” Sanderson is known for making his own infused olive oils and Herbes de Vernon, his special seasoning mix. Gumtree gets as much of its supplies and services as possible locally. “Sometimes we just buy what looks good and give it to Billy and say, “Make something.’ And he does,” said MacAulay, who literally has dreams about new ways to prepare and serve food, which she admits sometimes work out beautifully and sometimes don’t. Both she and Pruckl are hands-on cooks. When things are busy they’re both in the kitchen and they wash a

There’s a certain quality and look that we want for our food,” said Pruckl. “We’re both active in the community. We make soup for the Alliance Church soup for the homeless program, and breakfast for Transition House once a month and we support local schools. We’re sponsoring the appies for the VIP lounge for the RBC event. The community supports us and we want to give back.” The pair likes getting creative with menus, from an Italian wedding where the guests said the lasagna was better than Italian, to a Portuguese wedding, a Japanese dinner, to a South African-style family event where they had to go to Vancouver for some of the ingredients. They love it all. The food goes out to everything from a romantic dinner for two, to a campsite, to events at private homes, local venues and local businesses. “We’re a from-scratch kitchen, the baking, the sauces, the dressings, the freshest ingredients possible.

We cater anywhere, including a van in the rain in the middle of a horse field. We have a lot of fun and we never say no,” said Pruckl, recalling the time everyone worked together to fill an order for 40 cupcakes for a 40th birthday party in 40 minutes. Gumtree Catering also offers cooking classes on request (minimum 10 participants) and has a small frozen food take-out section at the Alpine Centre location. They run a private cafe in the new Kal Tire Building. The company won the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award from Community Futures and has been voted Caterer of the Year by Okanagan Life for four years in a row. The future will probably include expansion but for now, they’re happy with what they’re doing, including the working-mother dream perk of being able to bring dinner home from their kitchens. “We love what we do and we think that reflects in our food. We get to be part of a lot of special moments in people’s lives. We both feel very lucky,” said MacAulay.

How to usher your office

into the

Technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, with once groundbreaking ideas and devices becoming obsolete in what seems like the blink of an eye. Despite such advancements, many professional environments are still consuming far more energy than is necessary, proving that there is still progress to be made with regard to how we use technology and protect the planet. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30 percent of energy consumed by office buildings is used inefficiently, while the Energy Star program notes that 17 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from commercial buildings’ energy use. That leaves ample opportunity for those who want to usher their offices into the ecofriendly era to make changes that will conserve energy.

era

Consider new lighting.

Energy Star notes that lighting is typically the most costly portion of many companies’ monthly electric bills, and that’s often because lighting is so often used in an inefficient manner. But flipping switches at the end of each day is not the only way business owners or office managers can cut their lighting costs. Many companies prefer to have lights on overnight for security purposes, but motion detection lighting systems are more eco-friendly and can pay for themselves over the long haul by reducing energy costs. Such systems will only turn on when movement is detected in the building. This saves owners the cost of illuminating empty offices overnight but still enables them to protect buildings with lights in the case of break-ins.

Screen savers might be aesthetically appealing, but that beauty comes at a steep price, as screen savers use the same amount of energy while you’re away as the computer does while you are hard at work. Encourage workers to put their computers to sleep when they will be away from their desks for 20 minutes or more. Workers can turn their computers off completely to save even more energy when their workday is done. Reduce paper consumption. Hard copy documents are increasingly going the way of the dinosaur, and that’s a good thing for businesses who want to be more eco-friendly. In lieu of storing hard copy documents in filing cabinets or other antiquated storing systems, companies can encourage employees to store files digitally in easily accessible folders on their computers or on company servers. Plug leaks. Much like homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by plugging leaks around windows and doorways, businesses also can cut energy costs by identifying and plugging leaks. In fact, taking care of air leaks can save businesses as much as 10 percent off their energy costs. Make sure air ducts and filters are routinely cleaned to ensure heating and cooling systems are operating at optimal efficiency. Many business owners and office managers have been slow to embrace various eco-friendly strategies that can benefit the planet and their bottom lines. But as technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, the opportunities for businesses to become more eco-friendly continue to evolve as well.

I was first introduced to antiques when I met my husband Randy while he was with the RCMP. A passion for antiques became Blast From The Past Antiques July 1, 2000. After being a stay at home mom for sometime, I joined Randy at the store. Everyday tells a new story. I am surrounded by treasures from days gone by. We are always adding to our inventory and every visit will be a new experience! Providing great customer service in a pleasant, clean, and organized environment is what makes a great day! PLAY YOUR WAY

to a more enjoyable life!

TYLER LOWEY Morning Star Staff

There is a serious science to silliness that can help you handle life’s stressful situations with ease. Mark Twain once said, “the human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.” Jeunesse Pearson is a certified counselor and coach and the creator of PlayFate, a company now offering a series of courses entitled, Laugh Your Past Off. The course starts May 26, running for six Monday evenings 7-9 p.m. at the beautiful Pottery Road Yoga Studio on 694 Pottery Road. There is still time for last-minute registration. The course demonstrates how the use of laughter and play can enrich your life and positively confront challenges. “I love being able to help people laugh and recapture some playfulness and discover that humor can be a very valuable part of your well-being,” said Pearson. Pearson encourages people to bring their problems with them

into the class, so they can work through life’s challenges together. “People will come in and they will be in a fuss because they got cut off while driving, or they got a traffic ticket. We will talk about the situation, put the person back into a good mood and they will realize that it isn’t a big deal in the long run,” said Pearson. Pearson has a background in social work, dealing with highrisk teens. She found that any time humour was involved, it diffused the situation.

walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard.

Stay involved with your child’s school. Many

mothers find staying active with their children’s school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year.

Take advantage of work-from-home policies. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it’s only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate

the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month.

Plan ahead.

Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it’s ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. A three-day weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today’s mothers can raise a happy family and still have a successful career.

☛ Know what you need.

Once you’ve explained your idea, a potential investor, wheth-

er it’s a venture capitalist, a trusted friend or even a family member, will want to know exactly how much money you need. The more money you need, the more people you’re likely to have to approach. If the amount of capital you need is relatively small, then you can seek the help of friends and family members. This might prove especially rewarding should your business eventually succeed, as you will have raised investment capital from the people you trust and rewarded that trust with a healthy return on their investments.

Keeping things in the family definitely has its benefits, but it can also cause problems, especially if the amount of capital you need to raise is substantial. In such instances, seeking the help of a venture capitalist might be your best bet.

☛ Invest in yourself, but don’t overdo it. Letting

potential investors know you’ve invested your own money in the project can help, but you don’t want to overdo it. Potential investors might hesitate to invest with someone who sank their entire savings into an idea. Such hesitation occurs because investors don’t want decisions affecting the company to be made by someone who is concerned about losing their entire nest egg. So while it’s good to invest in yourself and your idea, don’t overdo it to the point where potential investors might see your business as a red flag instead of a worthwhile investment.

☛ Develop a detailed plan. Potential investors will

want to see a detailed business plan that includes how the business will be run and how their money, should they ultimately choose to invest, will be used. Include a forecast of expenses, which includes materials needed as well as what you expect to pay in rent for office and manufacturing space. This plan

should also include an earnings projection, which can point to when an investor can reasonably expect to start seeing some return on his or her investment. If you have no experience in developing a business plan, then you might want to consult a business advisor.

I am very fortunate to have these girls working with me. Our clients trust our ability to deliver a great treatment and appreciate the extra care and attention they receive.”

☛ Be enthusiastic about the future. Enthusiasm is

important when seeking investors. Potential investors already have money, and they won’t want to invest in an idea with a goal of breaking even. Explain to potential investors that you have a long-term vision for your business, one that isn’t just for survival but, ideally, expansion. You don’t want to go overboard here, but you don’t want to project a lack of confidence in your ideas or a lack of vision for how you want your business to grow, either. Enthusiasm about the future can pique a potential investor’s interest, whereas an investment opportunity that doesn’t figure to yield much of a return will turn investors off. Building a business is no small feat, and entrepreneurs should work as hard at convincing potential investors to invest as they did at developing their initial ideas.

any people are familiar with the conventional wisdom about first impressions. When you only have one chance to make a first impression, it’s a good idea to make the most of that opportunity. But not every first impression inspires fond memories, and while erasing a bad first impression might be impossible, that does not mean a second impression can’t trump its predecessor. That’s especially true for businesses. Businesses typically experience a few stumbles out of the gate, and sometimes those stumbles coincide with a customer’s first encounter with a business. When such encounters hurt a business’ image, a business owner can employ various strategies to restore that image and increase the likelihood that future interactions with customers go as smoothly as possible.

flip-flops may be your ideal outfit, but such attire is rarely appropriate in a professional atmosphere. Firsttime customers who see employees decked out in less formal attire may feel the company also takes a lax attitude toward its work, so avoid fashion that might give the wrong impression. ~ Prioritize positive customer service. Many businesses suffer from bad word of mouth that’s spread when past customers share horror stories of negative experiences with company employees. Such a problem is easily remedied by prioritizing customer service. This includes emphasizing that those who answer the phones always address customers respectfully and, when responding to emails or engaging in online chats, write professional responses that steer clear of informal language. Customers often understand that a product may malfunction, but poor

customer service is inexplicable and will reduce the likelihood that a customer will become a repeat customer. ~ Commission a better website. Today’s consumers often rely on the Internet to connect with a business. Consumers may want to peruse a restaurant’s menu before booking a reservation or view a retailer’s online catalogue before walking into the store. A good website can be a tremendous asset to a business, while a bad website can drive customers away before they spend so much as a dollar. A good website is informative and easy to navigate. Restaurant owners should include some photos of their establishment on the site to show customers the type of ambiance they can expect when dining. The site’s URL should include only the name of the restaurant, which makes it easy for potential customers to find the site when using a search engine. If the name you prefer is already taken by a similarly named establishment in another region, then include your state or city in the URL. If you are not skilled at building websites, hire a professional firm to build the site for you. Such an investment will likely pay for itself sooner rather than later and will increase the chances that customers’ first impressions are good ones. ~ Establish a social media presence. A poor first impression can be difficult to overcome, but companies can take several steps to regain consumer trust. itate or improve a business’ image is to establish a social media presence that connects the business with existing and potential customers. Use the various social media platforms in different ways. Social media can also be used to solicit customer feedback, which can be used to ensure you are meeting your customers’ needs and adapting to meet those needs when necessary. KRISTIN FRONEMAN Morning Star Staff

The wrought iron sculpture of four bicycles located in front of the Seville Centre on 30th Street in downtown Vernon actually has a functional purpose. Not only does it serve as a bike stand, it is also an apt welcome inside the newly opened Paradigm Naturopathic Medicine. It’s where nutritionist and coach Mel Spooner works with her partner in business and life, Dr. Chris Spooner, and can often be found spinning on her stationary bike. The girl can’t help herself. Cycling is in her blood. Those who follow triathlon, and the internationally-run endurance race known as Ironman, may recognize Spooner’s name. A three-time Ironman champion, she has spent more than half her life on a bike seat, in the water, and pounding the pavement in her runners. She now helps others to reach their goals through her work at Paradigm, as well as through her own business, Endurance Health and Fitness. Spooner exudes an infectious energy, and a calm, whether offering a relaxing cup of herbal tea in Paradigm’s new fitness/yoga room, or getting her clients to do intervals around the Polson track. “My thinking (when doing a race) is that you don’t go to Disneyland just to see Mickey, you go for the whole adventure,” she says. “You never know how it is going to end up. You may have an idea on how long it will take, what clothes you need to bring. You prepare, but the result is often unexpected.” Those ideas spread out to Spooner’s teachings about health and fitness: Go at your own pace. Enjoy the journey. Have fun. “There’s been struggles and roadblocks; that’s been part of everything and is something you learn to deal with. I learned the most from the races where I didn’t have my best result. You learn so much more from the challenges. It’s where the passion comes from.” She has the same philosophy when it comes to nutrition. She teaches people to put a spectrum of colour of natural foods on their plates, not only for aesthetic reasons but for the health benefits. “My view is to take it back to simple. It’s the same premise of naturopathic medicine, to get at the root cause. It’s a philosophy,” she said. “It’s about how it fits into your lifestyle, establishing a routine, and about how you feel during it.” Spooner started her journey towards enduro sport while growing up in Comox on Vancouver Island. After her father died from cancer when she was 16, her mother gave her

money to buy a new bike. “She knew movement for me was always important,” said Spooner. “For me sports was whatever the season was at school. I didn’t drive until I was 30. I rode my bike everywhere. It was not something to do or not to do. It was not a competitive thing. It was a lifestyle and it still is.” That lifestyle continued as Spooner made the move to Victoria to attend university. When not studying, she taught aerobics and waited tables, and rode her bike everywhere. She was also exposed to triathlon through a family friend.

Around that time, Spooner decided to forgo a trip to Europe and do her first Olympic distance triathlon in China. “It was a sanctioned event and I came in dead last. I thought it was more interesting to go to China,” she said. In 1993, after volunteering at Ironman Canada, then held in Penticton, Spooner completed her first Ironman race in Penticton the following year. She placed first in her age group and broke a record, still in the books to this day. “The distance of the race resonated with me. I didn’t care about going fast, I loved the challenge of it,” she said, adding,“I was broke at the time, so I thought if I was racing professionally, I could make money.” The following year, she went with a note with her professional accreditation to the Wildflower triathlon, part of the TriCalifornia events series. “I was getting off my bike in third place and yelled at the organizer, ‘I guess I like this!,” laughed Spooner. By that time she had also found love

Mel Spooner, an endurance coach and nutritionist with Paradigm Naturopathic Medicine, strikes a yoga pose at Kalamalka Provincial Park. through her running partner Chris Spooner. The two eventually moved to Seattle, where Chris studied naturopathic medicine and Mel took her bachelor of science with a major in nutrition at Bastyer University. The couple then moved to Toronto, where Mel decided to make a move from just racing to winning. “I met Julius Palladino, a coach at a running club in Toronto, and asked him to help me. Instead of saying ‘no, you can’t do that,’ he said ‘this is how we’re going to do it.’ That attitude was an important attribute for providing me with that same mindset.” It also helped that Chris supported her long training sessions and races away from home. “I was always surrounded by a group of people who thought what I was doing wasn’t weird,” she said. Besides those three Ironman races which she won, Spooner finished a personal best

fourth place at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in 1998. Not officially retired from the sport, Spooner now keeps a busy schedule helping others find a balance in their lives. She is currently taking a yoga instructor’s course, and her other new endeavour is a triathlon club just for youth, which she conducts with fellow triathlon/swimming coach Laura Medcalf. “We had 180 kids sign up for the first Kids of Steel triathlon last year so when Laura asked me about starting a club here, I said yes,” she said. “It’s important to build this sense of community here, and sometimes you have to think outside the box. It often comes full circle; asking yourself how do you allow people a safe way to explore a healthy lifestyle. I love being part of that community.”

Put yourself to the test. Do your homework. Take your new career for a test drive. With the world ever-changing in nearly every way, one area that certainly isn’t bucking that trend is the workplace. Technology seems to be making daily changes to how companies do business. But while technology is certainly leaving its mark, so too is an ideological shift with respect to work. Whereas it was once common for people to choose a career path and stick with it until it came time to retire, more and more of today’s workers find themselves making at least one career change during their lifetime. Many more change careers several times before settling on the one they’ll pursue

until it comes time to retire. While change is good, the growing trend of career changes can be looked at as part of a greater problem: many of today’s workers are choosing the wrong path at the start of their employment journey. That’s not to say this is a bad thing, as many people simply don’t know what they want to do when it comes time to enter the workforce, and many more still don’t know several years into their professional lives. Fortunately, for people in such a quandary, there is advice to consider to ensure your next career change will take you down the right path.

Put yourself to the test Many job-hunting agencies offer services that are designed to help you find the right career path. This typically involves lots of selfassessment, where you’ll take tests to see what it is you truly want to do with your life and what you want out of a career. These tests can be accurate or useless, depending on how honest you are with yourself. Keep an open mind with whatever results the tests find. And remember, if the test says you’re best suited for a certain field but you don’t agree, you can always move on to other methods.

Do your homework Choosing the right career path, whether you’re fresh out of college or well into your professional life, involves researching what careers are out there and what’s best suited to your talents and goals. Typically, such research yields a number of fields that match both interests and career goals. Some of these careers you might not even know about, while some could be obvious. If your research produces a handful of careers, you’ve now narrowed your search and can begin more extensive research. Consider seeking advice from a career

Sunday, May 25, 2014 - The Morning Star Z35

counsellor who might help you speed up the process.

Take your new career for a test drive. Once you’ve done your research on your narrowed list, consider taking a couple of those prospective careers on a “test drive.” Rather than give your two weeks notice and just dive right in, try volunteering in your prospective field first. This will give you a chance to see if your research was right and the career is something you’re willing to try out for the long haul. It can also help you eliminate making a mistake and taking a job you won’t like.

Go for it If you like what you’ve seen and feel like it’s the right direction for you, then go for it. While it will seem like a big risk, as the current workplace climate suggests, you’re certainly not the first nor will you be the last to make a career change or choose a career that may or may not be right for you. Just make the most of whatever choice you make.

entors are an important and invaluable resource directly linked to entrepreneurial success. ARE YOU READY TO BE ONE? Research suggests that good mentoring is critical to business success. Indeed, 88 per cent of entrepreneurs who have mentors survive in business, while only 50 per cent of those without a mentor make it through. This is why the Canadian Youth Business Foundation provides handmatched mentors to young entrepreneurs. CYBF recruits people with diverse business know-how to help them thrive. Mentors come in all shapes and sizes. They could be managing million-dollar companies or have decades of experience running local convenience stores. They may be experts in law, accounting, or marketing. They could be leading a not-for-profit organization or work as professionals for the government.

Joan has worked with owner, Traci Evans, for ten years and is proud to be the Senior Team Leader with Okanagan Traffic Control Professionals Inc. Known locally for many years as “Smiley”, the mother of two and Grandmother of two has gone from being a “newbie” in 2004, to Supervisor, H & S employee representative and Trainer. Joan truly enjoys her job. Okanagan Traffic Control, a COR certified company, always has a great team of TCPs. They are very professional and take their responsibility for the public and crew safety seriously yet still believe you should enjoy your job, as you spend a lot of time there!

Many Canadians have experience and skills that are relevant to someone in the start-up phase of their business.

Along with working construction sites for a variety of local contractors, Okanagan TCP proudly provides traffic control for a number of special events throughout the year. You will see them at triathlons, graduations, the Balloon Glow, The IPE Parade, and numerous others, including the Annual Longboard Race on Middleton Mtn.

The organization reports that since 1997, more than 3,000 volunteer mentors have successfully guided more than 5,600 young CYBF entrepreneurs through their crucial early stages – and is currently recruiting new mentors to support Canada’s next wave of young business leaders. It only requires four to five hours per month and a commitment of up to two years. Anyone with time to give, plus a successful track record in their business sector, is welcome.

So watch for them on the road, and share a smile. Remember, slow down, stay off the phone and pay attention. We all want to get home safe.

Wardrobe Tips FOR EVERY WOMEN Celebrities and public figures make many things look easy, especially when it comes to fashion. Money alone does not buy style, and chances are the average woman has the wardrobe staples necessary to look her best. Such essentials need not cost a fortune to produce a seemingly endless array of outfits.

Take inventory of the basics Women should go through their closets and find the wardrobe pieces that can be put to use in multiple combinations. Timeless styles can be used over and over, and some items work well as a base for a multitude of outfits. For example, a simple sleeveless dress in a neutral color can be worn alone, paired with a cardigan for a professional or casual look, or even made to look corporate with a blazer for a business meeting. A sheath in black, tan or navy can be worn repeatedly and matched to a bevy of other pieces. In addition to a simple dress, a pair of black pants, a knee-length skirt, a few tanks or camisoles, a pair of dark-colored jeans, and solid-colored cardigans can be mixed and matched in different ways.

Spice up the basics with some new items that feature hot colors of the season. Pastels, orange and neon colors are big for the spring and summer. Orange can also carry into autumn. A bold blazer will add appeal to an office combination. A printed scarf paired with a neutral blouse and pants adds some color and whimsy without being too bold. Add some punch to any wardrobe with strapped shoes or flashy accessories.

HOW A LITTLE

FASHION

BOUTIQUE IN ARMSTRONG LAUNCHED THE OKANAGAN’S ONLY GLOSSY WOMEN’S MAGAZINE!

B

oth Silhouette Fashion Boutique and Okanagan Woman Magazine were started as business ventures because parttime goat farmer, gift shop owner and full time accountant, TJ Wallis, saw a couple of opportunities -- niches that needed filling. “As an accountant, my busy time of year is January through April. I wanted something to keep me busy during the rest of the year, so I opened a gift/candy store in the retail space next to my office in downtown Armstrong. “ It didn’t take long to realize that the bestselling items in the gift store were handbags and scarves. Her mostly female clientele often asked if she would consider bringing in more fashion items. There hadn’t been a women’s clothing store in Armstrong in well over 7 years and locals were missing it. So TJ put on her accountant’s hat and crunched some numbers. She knew the boutique would have the support of Armstrong women, but she also knew she would have to draw in from other areas to make a viable business. That would require a larger marketing budget than she could afford. But what if … ? What if she published her own magazine, one in which she could advertise her store, one that would appeal to the audience she wanted to attract to Silhouette Fashion Boutique? That just might work. Women are the number one consumers and they are the number one readers of magazines! With 100,000 women over the age of 25 living in the Okanagan, TJ saw an opportunity – a niche market. And so the idea for Silhouette Fashion Boutique and Okanagan Woman Magazine was born. Both businesses are thriving and TJ credits that to their mutualistic relationship. They are so well suited, a perfect marriage, each supporting the other and each perfectly capable of standing on their own, too. During January and February, the store expanded to make room for new spring stock. “Now that the snow has disappeared, we’d love to show off our new floor space. We’ve doubled in size, from 700 to 1400 square feet! That means we’ve doubled our inventory, too.” TJ expects that Silhouette Fashion Boutique’s online presence will play a significant role in bringing in shoppers from throughout the Okanagan. The new online store helps showcase the boutique’s collections from Salmon Arm to Penticton, and beyond. It gives women a very good idea of what they can expect when they come out to Armstrong to shop. It gives them the confidence that it is worth the drive. And, of course, they don’t have to make the drive if they don’t want to because ordering online is easy. “I think it gives on-line shoppers a feeling of security to know that we have a bricks and mortar store right here in the Okanagan and they can come visit us anytime! Well, at least, Monday to Friday 10 – 5 and Saturdays, 10 – 3 ”

Know the cuts and colors that work

Looking polished means finding the hues and styles that fit with a particular body type and skin coloring, more so than simply following the latest trends. A woman who understands her body type can rely on pieces that are designed to flatter. Not all colors work on every person. While greens and yellows may look good on one person, a woman with an olive skin tone may look washed out wearing these shades too close to her face. Similarly, fair- or dark-skinned women may fade into their clothing if the pieces are too similar to their skin tone. Once a match is found, these can be the go-to looks that enable her to always look polished.

Make sure it fits

Clothing that does not fit properly will not look good no matter how fashionable or expensive it might be. Rather than fixating on the size printed on the tag, women should shop for clothing based on fit. This could mean bringing a few different sizes into the dressing room and figuring out which one fits best. Not all designers run true to size, and some fabrics will have more give than others. A good rule of thumb is to always fit the largest part of your body. The other measurements can be tailored accordingly.

Invest in good undergarments

Sometimes it isn’t the clothes that can make the woman, but the structure pieces she wears underneath. Fitting experts attest that nearly 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Most women are slipping into bras that are too small. Although bras range in size from 28AAA to 56FF, the majority of department stores stock a limited number of the most popular sizes. Therefore, women may squeeze into bras that are not sized correctly. A better idea is to go to a specialty lingerie shop to get properly sized. A well-fitting bra also transforms the way shirts and dresses look and fit. Before investing in an entirely new wardrobe, women should invest in new bras. Looking good does not have to require spending a fortune or overhauling a wardrobe. Mix and match existing clothing with some new, well-fitting pieces to revitalize your look.

Corinne Jeppesen Corinne moved to Armstrong with her parents in 1979 and picked asparagus as a teenager on weekends and after school. Now almost 35 years later she is growing asparagus (across the road from where she grew up) with her husband Mark. This year Corinne and her husband Mark are celebrating 17 years of growing asparagus. Their first harvest (in 1997) lasted only 10 days and was sold on the honor system. Customers bagged and weighed their own asparagus and made change in an ice cream bucket. Today the farm (store) is set up to take you back in time with antiques and old photos of Armstrong and Spallumcheen. Recipe ideas and pickled asparagus are just a few of the extras you will find at the farm store. There is now also a second location at 4239 Salmon River Rd. Mark & Corinne also grow cantaloupe, garlic, squash, strawberries, sweet corn & watermelon. Free guided and self - guided (with map) farm tours are available. For large groups, pre-booking is recommended.

Lisa Angelis What an incredible first year Lisa has had at Serenity Tanning! The support has truly been amazing from all the clients that have been coming here for years and years. Lisa feels they have welcomed her and she has met some fantastic people. It is important to her that she knows her customers when they walk through the door. Serenity Tanning is a great place to come every day as everyone is happy and they leave in a great mood. Some things have change this past year as Lisa added swimwear and apparel and it was a hit. They have also added some great skin care products that go hand in hand with tanning and just recently added spraytans. It was an area that they felt they needed to expand into as people want that option. Not everyone has the time to get in and build a Tan. Lisa loves the feedback so she encourages everyone to let us know what brands they would like to see or other services they would like. Serenity Tanning has a great team of girls whose priority, of course, is always having well maintained hot beds and a clean, sanitary and comfortable environment. Lisa feels there is only one down side to this business and that is getting everyone set for a vacation and then sending them on their way to the beaches in Mexico while she am stuck here. Lisa looks forward to another great year with you all. Drop ins are always welcome and first tan is always complimentry so come down and check us out.

SWITCH JOBS

Grace & Decorum

Women leave jobs for various reasons. Some women cite disparities in pay, an inability to advance through the company or incompatibility with a particular place of business as their reasons for seeking new employment, while others leave jobs to take time off for family obligations, only to reenter the workforce at a later time. Transitioning between jobs is common, but professionals can take certain steps to ensure their transition works out for them and does not burn any bridges along the way. Be clear about why you are leaving. Having firm reasons for your resignation will enable you to leave with more confidence and conviction. Provide enough notice to the company. While two weeks is standard, some positions may require more or less time. It’s best not to drag your exit out too long though.

Diana Vona Excellence in customer service is Diana’s passion. She wanted to create a beautiful store that would make her customers feel important; getting that little extra care and attention. Diana wanted that small town atmosphere where you know your customers by name. With a vision in her head, Diana worked hard for two months and the inspiration came to life. She knew she did the store justice when her friend Jackie cried when she first saw the store. Diana’s motto for customers is “if you don`t love it, don`t buy it”. She wanted the highest quality of goods for each price point and she stocks Canadian made products because they are the standard to follow. Why not have quality instead of quantity? It is so important for our health as we spend many hours in our bedroom and our bodies absorb what is in our fabrics.

3212 30th Avenue, Vernon • 778-475-4603 • 778-475-4902

Meet with your boss first. Don’t let a boss find out about your intentions to leave the company through the workplace gossip mill. It is always more professional to keep plans to yourself and show your boss the respect of hearing about your decision to leave first. Continue to do your job to the best of your abilities. Slacking off damages good will and is a surefire way to burn some bridges. Put in your best effort until the day you leave the company behind. Maintain decorum even if it was not your idea to leave. Being fired or downsized can hurt, particularly when you thought you were doing a good job. Remain cool and always be professional. How you conduct yourself when facing adversity could speak well to your future employers. When it is time to leave an employment position for a new one, do so with grace and humility.
