Minions declares intent to run
Sharie Marie Minions is the latest Alberni Valley resident to declare her intention to run for city council in the November municipal election. Minions, who manages a dozen mortgage brokers with the Sharie Marie Mortgage Team, runs an online children’s clothing company and is a member of Young Professionals Alberni Valley, has set up a Facebook page for her campaign. “City council has been something I’ve been thinking about doing for quite a while,” she writes. “As I’ve gotten more and more involved in Port Alberni politics and city operations, the biggest thing that’s concerned and bothered me has been our current council’s lack of planning when it comes to budgeting for our future.” The municipal election doesn’t take place until Nov. 15 and official nominations cannot be filed more than 46 days before the election.
Net pen cannon balls stolen
West Coast Aquatic is asking the public to be on the lookout for suspicious activity around the three salmon net pens it has in the harbour after some cannon balls were cut from the main pens off of Somass mill. “Somebody had to have accessed it by boat,” WCA’s Sheena Falconer said. “They’ve cut the ropes.” Six of the weights were stolen.
Port Alberni parents will need to make other plans for their school-age children after BC teachers served one-day strike notice for next Tuesday. Locals teachers are staging a one-day walkout on May 27. The move affects all schools across School District 70, Alberni
District Teachers Union President Ken Zydyk said. The measure is for one day only and further action will depend on the progress of negotiations between the BCTF and provincial government. “Right now it’s just for one day. But if there is no progress at the table then we’ll look at one day the following week,” Zydyk said. “It won’t necessarily be on the same day of the
week though.” Notices will be sent home with students about the issue, School District 70 superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Schools will be open but there will be minimal supervision. “And we don’t expect anyone to cross the picket line,” he said. The BCTF rejected the offer of a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by
the end of the school year. BCTF president Jim Iker said Tuesday the bonus doesn’t make up for the government’s wage offer of six per cent over six years. The government also threatened to cut teacher wages by five per cent or more because of strike action. “There’s been concessions asked for and threats but there’s been nothing that meets the
educational needs of kids,” Zydyk said. Iker reiterated the union’s position that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and special needs support are needed to reach a settlement. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter/AlberniNews

A monument at Harbour Quay dedicated to the Komagata Maru would aid in public education and honour the passengers who were trapped aboard the doomed ship a century ago. Members of the Komagata Maru commemoration committee broached the idea at a special ceremony attended by 80 people at the Guru Nanak Society temple on Eighth Avenue on Sunday. “I think that this would be a wonderful idea if we could make it happen,” organizer Palo Soll said. The monument would be placed at Harbour Quay and overlook the harbour where the Komagata Maru and its 376 passengers would have landed had things been different. In 1914, two South Asian men travelled to Port Alberni to try and lure the Komagata Maru up the Alberni Inlet to Port Alberni, which authorities didn’t consider a restricted port. The plan failed and the ship dropped anchor in Vancouver instead, where a two-month stalemate ensued before the ship sailed back to India. “A monument at Harbour Quay would be a good

public education tool because it would remind people of the history of the incident,” Sall said. “It would also point out that Port Alberni has a connection to that history because the ship almost docked here.” The monument has more meaning that just footnoting a historical event. “In our culture, we have a very deep, deep respect for our ancestors,”
city councillor Hira Chopra said about the ship’s 376 passengers. Committee members are going to huddle up to discuss the idea further before making inquiries to the city, Soll said. Mayor John Douglas, who attended the ceremony, said he would be open to discussing the idea. “I’ve only recently become intimately aware of this incident and our
city’s place in it,” he said. “I think it’s important to not just remember this but to learn from it as well.” Among the things to learn, Douglas said is “that we all came from somewhere else. The people who came to this country are the people who helped build this country.” Sitting quietly in attendance at the ceremony was Pauline
Siegfried (born Indarpaul Kaur Rattan), a Port Alberni resident and retired school teacher. “My grandfather Chanda Singh Rattan was aboard the Komagata Maru,” Siegfried said. “His ticket number was 247.” Siegfried’s older brother Mohinder told her 10 years ago of their grandfather’s voyage. The then 22-year old Chanda survived the trip back to India and, undaunted, returned to Canada later with his family. “On one hand I was surprised to know that I have an intimate place in this history,” Siegfried said. “But on the other hand, it’s awful what was done to them.” Little if any information about the event was ever taught in schools, Siegfried said, something that would be invaluable. “I understand the value it would have of teaching kids to be accepting of everyone.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter/AlberniNews

Enhanced earthquake alert capability is behind an Ocean Networks Canada initiative that will see new sensors installed across Vancouver Island including Port Alberni. Falling victim to US politics Aboriginal education or victim studies? We’re curious where the anger comes from and how deeply rooted it is. We’re talking about the palpable distaste, even disdain that surfaces in public discourse for “left wingers” or “right wingers,” to the point where the phrases are tossed around like epithets. In the media business it crops up regularly, usually in the context of someone finding an easy way to dismiss someone else’s idea or opinion. And we wonder: how can this be fixed? Because it needs to be fixed. Certainly part of it can be chalked up to the media and its penchant for framing stories as conflict. Certainly it has to do with our electoral system and the way it segregates people into camps then pits them against each other in a dogfight for power. When you are invested in a battle of any kind, it is human nature to think the worst of your opponent. But we aren’t sure this quality always represents the best of human nature. And much of the responsibility for these adversarial relationships also needs to be placed on the shoulders of individuals. How guilty are we of equating the distasteful words and actions of a single “leftie” or “rightie” to the default mindset of an entire group of people? How respectful are we of other points of view? How much of an effort are we making to see things from other people’s perspective? Rational thinking demands an open mind. Civil discourse demands civility. These should be things we actively aspire to. To do otherwise seems contrary to our Canadian nature. — Cowichan News Leader

ICTORIA – The B.C. School Trustees’ Association is calling for a mandatory high school course on the history of residential schools set up to assimilate aboriginal children into European culture. Trustees propose a 25-hour course required for all graduating students, using interviews with residential school survivors, presentations by aboriginal leaders and discussion of current events. This would build on aboriginal courses already offered in B.C. schools, and a public education effort that began with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s 2008 apology and compensation for Canada’s residential school policy. B.C. Teachers’ Federation vice-president Glen Hansman gave a
speech on the need for mandatory education to a 2012 teacher conference. He said current aboriginal culture courses are poorly attended, and went on to denounce a school system he said is still based on “colonialism” and a “settler construct” of history. “We need to acknowledge that racism is the norm in public schools— still today,” Hansman said. Is it really? He also claimed that the purpose and legacy of the residential schools – Glen have been “deliberately hidden” from school curriculum. In lieu of evidence, Hansman recounted old anecdotes of Americanstyle stereotyping from his own schooling in Ontario. But mostly he demanded social engineering in schools that must of course include more
funding, more teacher professional development time and an affirmative action program to recruit more aboriginal teachers. Do Hansman’s allegations reflect the kind of attitude that would lead to truth and reconciliation? Or are they signs of another unfortunate legacy, that of the victim studies mentality that permeates our universities? Here’s a suggestion for this mandatory course. Students spend Hansman could a couple of hours on one of the definitive works of B.C. aboriginal history, A Stó:lo Coast Salish Historical Atlas. A long-term project of the Stól:lo Nation, the atlas has meticulously documented chapters on European contact and residential schools, and

On May 8, as I was watching CTV News I heard Justin Trudeau declare that the Liberal Party will not accept candidates who harbour pro life views. This viewpoint did not surprise me. He supports abortion, same sex marriage, contraception, legalized marijuana, euthanasia, assisted suicide and use of
swear words. Justin Trudeau, the so called “Catholic” politician, and other “so called” Christian political officials continue to oppose the church’s most important teaching on the sanctity of human life and sexuality. Justin Trudeau’s personal beliefs and his actions to not support pro life candidates in the Liberal party are not in alignment with the party itself or the Catholic church’s teaching. Canada is a democratic country and individuals, pro life or pro choice, should be allowed to run and serve in parliament. It is unconstitutional and undemocratic to disavow someone from being a part of a political party simply because they oppose a highly controversial topic. I would recommend that people, both in or outside of the Liberal party, not support Trudeau’s stance on not allowing people with different viewpoints to be a part of this political party.

Tseshaht whaling exhibit to be unveiled HISTORY: | An Tseshaht First Nation whaling exhibit at the Maritime Discovery Centre starting in June will feature a mix of history and contemporary art. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

inishing touches are being put in a special exhibit showcasing the Tseshaht First Nation’s history of whaling. The exhibit will be shown at the Maritime Discovery Centre on Harbour Road starting in June and will run for the rest of the summer at least, Alberni Valley Museum director Jamie Morton said. “The exhibit will centre around the tradition of whale hunting to Tseshaht culture,” Morton said. “It’s a central touchpoint, and takes them back to when those resources were used in the Barkley Sound.” Talks with the Port
Alberni Maritime Heritage Society about the exhibit have been going on for eight months, Tseshaht senior researcher and planner Darrell Ross said. The exhibit is being underwritten by Tseshaht as well as by a grant from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council. The display will feature harpoon points, elk bone, mussel shell blades and rope from the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que. The pieces were originally gathered by anthropologist Edward Sapir when he did research in Tseshaht territory in the early 1900’s, Ross said. The exhibit will also have contemporary pieces melded in it.

whale dorsal fin. Willard Gallic Jr. has also been commissioned to do some work. And a produced by the late Tseshaht historian George Clutesi depicting a whaling scene will be shown. The title of the exhibit will likely be the traditional names for either whaling or gathering whaling gear, Ross said. The name Tseshaht refers to Benson Island and roughly translated means “place that smells of whale oil.” “Tseshaht were whalers. They lived by the sea and hunted on it,” Ross said. From / A6 “We know that there are other young parents out there who aren’t at VAST but I couldn’t put a number to that.” VAST offers young parents its close working relationship with Hummingbird Childcare Centre. It facilitates a healthy relationships for youth course through the Red Cross; and it offers an employment and life skills program called Step-up which Money facilitates. VAST also employs five youth workers who meet with students twice a week. Transportation issues and school scheduling flexibility are challenges that
moms have that other students don’t. Young moms need to get to and from school, daycare, doctors appointments as well as grocery shopping. “I drive and it’s tough enough. But they walk or take the bus yet they are at class almost every day,” Money said. Teen parents have the choice of attending classes at ADSS but most choose VAST because of its flexibility. “Moms don’t have set schedules and your kids always come first, so VAST is a better fit with their lives and achieving their educational goals,” Money said. Mark’s goal has
always been to work with animals and that hasn’t changed. “I don’t want to give up school because my pregnancy didn’t change my goals,” she said. “I’m not stressed about school with VAST’s schedule and I’m keeping my marks up.” Not every young parent finishes their education. When Honda launched its fourth generation Odyssey in 2011, it described the minivan as ‘the ultimate in family transportation’. Odyssey has become an industry benchmark for minivan interior versatility features, fuel economy and its agile driving dynamics. While the market for new minivans has been shrinking in recent years, it’s still a sizeable in Canada. A used Odyssey is a sought-after premium product that will probably cost a little more, but historically it also retains its value exceptionally well. Compared to its predecessor, the 2011 Odyssey offered improved fuel economy due in part to a more aerodynamic shape that’s wider and includes a lower roofline. Offering seating for up to seven (or eight) occupants, this Odyssey also came with a new “3-mode” second-row seat design and an easier to use fold-away 60/40 split 3rd-row seat. Even its third row seat provides ample head and legroom for adults and a surprisingly high degree of comfort. Its stylish “lightning-bolt” body belt line, that zig-zag just aft of the sliding door, also cleverly provides third row passengers a larger window. A bigger part of the fuel economy improvement story was the new 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine that came with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). The VCM technology allows the engine to operate on just three or four of its six cylinders when power requirements are low, such as highway cruising.
When linked with a six-speed automatic transmission in the Touring edition of Odyssey it can achieve best-in-class city/highway fuel economy, rated at 10.9/7.1 L/100km (city/highway). The same engine comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission in all other trim levels of Odyssey, which are LX, EX, EX-RES and EX-L. The Touring edition, which is considered the most luxurious Honda minivan ever, came with a 16.2-inch ultra-wide screen rear entertainment system, a cool box for beverages, a multiview rear-view camera with parking aid lines, a Blind Spot information system and auto-leveling HID headlights. Odyssey also comes with an audio-based Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system and a chassis-based Active Control Engine Mount (ACM) system to cancel out noise and vibrations that can occur during the engines cylinder deactivation. Illumination of a green ‘ECO” light on the instrument panel is an indicator, although not necessarily, that Odyssey’s covert cylinder-deactivation is taking place. Other than minor exterior colour changes there were no changes to Odyssey for the 2012 model year. It got a back-up camera as standard equipment for 2013, but was otherwise unchanged. Designed, engineered and made in North America, the fourth-generation Honda Odyssey has a very good reliability record and achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating based on its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash testing results. Congratulations go out to Carol Bouchard for having a hole in one on No. 2 at the Alberni Golf Course last Thursday. That is Bouchard’s second hole in one on No. 2 within the year. Marilyn Merwin and LaDonna Knutson shared the low gross honours for nine-hole ladies (low handicap division) at Alberni Golf Club last week. Julie Swaney won the low net. Knutson had the lowest putts of the day. In the high handicap group, Mary Ann Maddison won the low gross, the low net went to Lee Anne VenLent and the lowest putts of the day was shared by VanLent and Maddison. Pars were had by Swaney on No. 12 and Merwin on No. 17.
Lorraine Wilson had a chip in on No. 13 and Swaney had one on No. 14. Twelve of our ladies attended the Qualicum Memorial Interclub last Wednesday, May 14. Low gross score went to LaDonna Knutson, low net went to Marie Swain and the lowest putts was won by Betty Adair. Knutson broke 100 for the first time on Monday, May 19. The ADSS Armada headed down to Victoria on May 8 to participate in the Island Badminton Championship at St. Michael’s University. In their first match they faced the top seeded team, Mount Douglas. There were several close matches, but Mount Doug eventually won 9-2. In their second match they faced the fourth seeded team, Oak Bay High. There were many exciting matches, but
Oak Bay was able to eke out a win 6-5, narrowly eliminating the Armada from the bronze medal match. Jesse Law was the top Armada player as he went undefeated in the tournament in both Boys’ Singles, and in Mixed Doubles with his partner Makenna Cyr. Mackenzie Berry and newcomer Chelsey Charlesworth had success in Girls’ Doubles, as did Maho Nakamura and
Tiffany McCarthy. Elson Wong and Mark Wang had a win in Boys’ Doubles. The team had a great season and are sad to see grade 12s Makenna Cyr and Eric Newton graduate. ADSS Proteau wins North Islands again hosts rugby
Christina Proteau of Port Alberni successfully defended her low gross title at the Ladies’ North Island Golf Tournament on Mother’s Day. Proteau won the Mildred Laver Trophy for Low Gross with a solid 74 and Comox’s Carmen deWinter drank out of the Low Net Cup for a second year in a row with a score of 65, defeating her next opponent by seven shots. The Archie Dick Trophy for Low Net Team was won by Mary Buchanan, Carmen de Winter, Fran Robinson and Maggie Miller. Sixty women teed off in the Ladies’ North Island this year.

The Men’s Club at Alberni Golf Club would like to welcome new member Gord Bonar as well as welcome back for another season of winning Peter (Fair Weather) Mugleston. Recycling rules change in city

Port Alberni residents may have noticed some changes to their recycling pickup this week. Businesses that supply packaging and printed paper to BC residents are now responsible for collecting and managing these materials so they can be recycled; they’re doing this under the auspices of Multi-Material BC (MMBC), a non-profit organization financed by these businesses, explains Janice Hill, ACRD environmental services co-ordinator. “Through MMBC’s
