Six dogs originally reported stolen in Langley had actually died in the care of their dog walker and were dumped on Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford. The bodies were retrieved by the BC SPCA on Monday. They had been dumped in a ditch
near the corner of Dixon Road and Campbell Road. Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks said police believe the six dogs perished in the back of the dog walker’s vehicle in the heat of the day. Public mischief charges are possible and the investigation into the alleged mistreatment of the dogs has been turned over to the SPCA.
Pet Searchers Canada, an agency hired by the dog owners to help retrieve the animals, determined that the animals had actually died of heat stroke last Tuesday, when they were said to have gone missing from Brookswood dog park. On the agency’s website, owner Al MacLellan Continued on A3

When she discovered all the dogs had succumbed, she said she panicked and made up the lie that they were taken. Lorie Chortyk, spokesperson for the BC SPCA, said after that information was shared with police and the animals were confirmed dead, the file was handed over to the BC SPCA, as they are the lead investigation and enforcement agency for animal cruelty cases.
Yesterday (Tuesday) the bodies were taken to a medical lab to undergo necropsies. Chortyk said they will look for physical evidence to show how the animals died and how long it took. They will also interview those involved and that information will form part of the evidence that the BC SPCA will submit to Crown counsel, which will decide whether charges will be laid. “Any situation involving causing distress to animals or allowing distress to animals certainly can be punished either under the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals Act ... or the Criminal Code.” Chortyk said they hope to have the results of the necropsy within a week. Chortyk said, “It is just sickening to think what (the families of the dogs) must have gone through,” while the animals were missing. She said people must be aware of the dangers of leaving animals in vehicles. Chortyk said many people don’t realize that as little as 10 minutes in a warm vehicle, even with windows open, can be fatal to animals. “We really hope that from this tragedy, there comes an awareness.”

Mission and Abbotsford teachers will take part in a one-day rotating strike with picket lines next Monday and Wednesday, respectively. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) announced the action Tuesday after they rejected an offer of a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year. The strikes will be staged at one group of school districts in each of the first four days next week, with teachers returning to work across the province May 30.
According to Abbotsford superintendent of schools Kevin Godden, schools will be closed next Wednesday as adequate supervision levels cannot be ensured. “It’s important for parents to stay tuned, and we’ll do our best to get the information out to them as soon as possible,” he said Tuesday afternoon. BCTF president Jim Iker said the bonus doesn’t make up for the government’s wage offer of 6.5 per cent over six years. A simultaneous plan to cut teacher wages five per cent or more because of strike action is “just so disrespectful, so unnecessary, and we’ll be dealing with it at the Labour Relations Board,” Iker said.
Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the signing bonus and reducing the contract term from 10 years to six were significant efforts to move toward a settlement. “Unfortunately, the announcement today says that the BCTF feels that disrupting classrooms, affecting children and their families is going to help to reach a settlement,” said Fassbender. Depending on what type of barbeque you have, setting it up for indirect cooking will be different. Many ceramic charcoal BBQs will have a ceramic plate for heat diffusion, while gas grills will mostly rely on having a burner turned off under the meat and closing the lid. Although men have been assigned the stereotype of working the backyard BBQ, it is a joy that is shared by all home culinary enthusiasts. It’s a summertime passion. The smoky essence of smoldering charcoal starts my mouth watering as my mind conjures up recollections of flame-licked meats, and fire caramelized vegetables. With a few basic tips, you can overcome any barbequing intimidation you may have. Overcooking lean meats is the most common mistake made, as people want to ensure that meat is fully cooked before serving. Although it is imperative for poultry and ground meats to be fully cooked, this does not give you the right to transform them into dry charred remains. Brining can help protect light-meat poultry and lean pork. This is a technique that involves soaking in a salt-water solution for a period of time prior to cooking. Not only does this add moisture to the center of the meat, but also seasoning, as the salt saturated water is drawn in. A simple brining formula would be: one quarter cup table salt dissolved in 4 cups of water for pieces of poultry or lean pork. Let the meat sit in the brine for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator. Remove from the brine, pat them dry, and cook
as you normally would. This brining process will provide a moisture protection shield to help keep fully cooked meats juicy. However, this is only a safeguard - overcooking is still possible, but this lessens the chance. The only other consideration you may need to give your recipe is the amount of seasoning. The meat will already be seasoned somewhat from the salt in the brine, so back off on the saltshaker. Try this technique the next time you are barbequing chicken breasts, pork chops, pork tenderloins or pork loins. You will be impressed with the results. The salt used can be any salt: Kosher, Sea, etc. - the important aspect is to ensure that the granules are the same size as table salt. A coarser grind will result in less salt per equal measure as more air trapped between the larger particles. It is important to mention that this is the simplest form of brine: Water & Salt. A philosophical reset
Local teachers will join their colleagues across B.C. with one-day rotating strike action this month. Abbotsford and Misson schools will be closed next Wednesday and Monday, respectively. Students lose a day of classes during key end-of-year learning and testing schedules – once again played as pawns in the war between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the B.C. government. There has not been a negotiated teachers’ contract settlement since 1996, with both the NDP and the Liberals taking turns at the helm. In past bargaining, the BCTF has opened new contract discussions with lofty demands, and when they aren’t met, has withdrawn teacher particpation in extra-curricular activities, and disrupted classrooms with varying forms of strike action. That now looms again, despite public education being an essential service. It could escalate as well, since this is only part two of a three-stage strategy. This time around, the BCTF wants a four-
year contract with a 10.75 per cent wage increase, plus 2.75 cost of living increase, and a return to 2001 class sizes and composition requirements. Do those expectations reflect the reality of a deeply challenged provincial economy and resulting budget? Comments online and on social media clearly illustrate that many parents, and even members of the public who do not have school-aged children, have lost patience with this tiresome, repetitive battle. We appreciate teachers’ importance and hard work, as well as their frustrations and challenges in the classroom. We also understand the government’s (the public’s) ability to pay. However, this combative atmosphere between the BCTF and the government of the day simply must change. That requires a major philosophical reset by both sides. The phrase “we’re doing it for the kids” is heavily exploited in this dreary dialogue. This time, do it, and mean it.

On Point Last week, I made a very serious error in judgment. I drank, and then drove. I was stopped in a routine police check, and I failed a roadside screening test. I am now paying the price, and it is extremely steep. I have lost my driver’s licence for 90 days, and it will be expensive getting it back. But the financial cost doesn’t begin to compare with the real pain. Words are inadequate as to how I feel, but here are some... Ashamed. Embarrassed. Guilty. Irresponsible. Gutted. That works well, too. Among what absolutely hurts the most – telling my 16-year-old daughter. This is what your father has done. The
dad you deserve to be proud of. The role model in your life. I have brought more anxiety, uncertainty and complication into your life, and your mom’s. What was I thinking? The answer is, I wasn’t. It wasn’t so much thinking that I was OK to drive – it was more about not thinking at all. This was not deliberate. It was not an intentional flouting of the law, or a perception of somehow being exempt. It was just after dinner, for just a few moments, just on a short errand – just... just... just. The law dictates I should not have been on the road, and for good reason. I accept that. The penalties for a failed test are tough. Vehicle impounded for 30 days. An $800 bill to get it back. A $500 fine. A $250 licence reinstatement fee. An $800 responsible driver’s course. Go online to icbc.com to read the details. I understand why the laws in this
respect have become more immediate and punitive. There have been too many people like me who drove after a few drinks. The tougher laws are having a positive impact. Since the new rules were introduced, B.C. has seen a decrease in impaired driving deaths to an annual average of 54, half of a previous annual fiveyear average of 112. There are personal upsides in all of this as well. I did not cause an accident, nor was I involved in one. The consequences of that are almost too chilling to imagine. I learned a huge lesson – one that should have been obvious. Also clear is the necessity of some lifestyle changes. Those are underway. Job stress. Fatigue. The tensions of everyday life. None of those influences, nor any others, are reasons to drink irresponsibly. I am sharing my experience with you, because I sincerely hope that by reading

this, others won’t repeat my grave error in judgment. It doesn’t require a great deal to fail a roadside screening test. Don’t take the chance. Caution over convenience. Not because of the potential penalties that loom, but because of the risk you place upon yourself, your passengers and other people on the road. If you’re wondering, I was not ordered or asked to write this column. I could try to hide what happened from everyone other than my family and work. And that would make me a liar. To the constable who dealt with me: Thank you for your courtesy and professionalism. To my colleagues and friends: I sincerely apologize. I know you expect better, and you would be right. Most importantly, to my wife and daughter, and our moms: I failed more than a roadside test. The road to rebuilding your support and respect begins here. For anyone who drinks, read this, and please think before you drive. Now I have three months to do that. You just need one moment.

Stop Bill 24 with its changes to ALR An open letter to Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson: I’m writing to express my concerns about Bill 24’s design to undermine the ALR’s integrity and to ask for your help stop its passage. The ALR was set up to protect farmland from competing market interests that would otherwise undermine its integrity over time. The market reminds us daily that it is neither our god, nor a benign or benevolent dictator. It has no special insight, foresight, wisdom nor does it have a moral compass. It cares only about itself. The ALR was set up 40 years ago to protect farmland from the whims of market’s arbitrary rapaciousness. Without the
ALR’s intervention, farmland integrity is at risk and becomes beholden to the market’s whims, by default. By that same default, B.C. constituents become liable bystanders to the outcome. I am asking you to convince your fellow MLA’s to defeat Bill 24. The ALR has done an excellent job providing reasonable farmland protection in long term best interest of B.C. Abbotsford Centre is heading into the 2014-15 season without a hockey tenant, after the city paid $5.5 million to buy out the last five years of the Abbotsford Heat’s 10year supply fee agreement. When the American Hockey League club’s impending departure was announced, WHL commissioner Ron Robison told The News that Abbotsford was “a market we have interest in.” But he noted that the league is not open to expansion at this point and does not have any pending applications for relocation. In addition, the WHL wouldn’t be able to get a franchise into Abbotsford in time for the 2014-15 season.

Summer camps University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is hosting a series of summer camps starting the second week of July, and registration is encouraged as soon as possible. Crohn’s and Colitis Canada holds its annual Gutsy Walk on Sunday, June 8 in Abbotsford. The five-kilometre event takes place at Trethewey House, 2313 Ware St., with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m. The walk raises funds for research and education to find cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This year’s honorary chair is James Najman, 19, a student of University of the Fraser Valley who is a second-

The condition causes patches of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and is usually located in the lower part of the small bowel and the upper end of the colon. Gifts that leave a lasting legacy It was a warm, sunny afternoon when John Wiebe and his son Rod walked through Matthew’s House. Rod’s wife, Laura and their daughters, Emily and Julianna were also there, taking the opportunity to visit a place that has a personal connection for them. “It’s so great that this is right here in our community and people here made it happen,” Rod said. The extended Wiebe family – and their company, Vedder Transportation Group - are among those who “made it happen.” Generosity is a personal commitment and one that the family has incorporated into their company. The Wiebes chose to support Matthew’s House because of its connection to one of their employees: Doug Froese. Matthew’s House is named for Matthew, son of Doug and Andrea Froese. Doug has been a Vedder employee for nearly 20 years. Laura remembers being pregnant with Julianna while Andrea was pregnant with Matthew. When complications during his birth left Matthew with complex health care needs, it was
the start of a long and difficult journey.

Holmberg House Abbotsford’s first adult hospice residence for those as young as 19 Every day the team at Abbotsford Hospice Society walks alongside families in Abbotsford; families like Joyce’s. Joyce places her husband’s picture by the fireplace. His grin is framed by a sun-soaked lake landscape of water, trees and mountains. He looks content, settled in his canoe. Joyce took the picture just months before Keith was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “That was the first time we canoed Echo Lake, ” Joyce explains. Keith died two and a half months later. In Keith’s final days, Joyce and Keith were connected with a hospice outside of their community, as Abbotsford does not have a hospice
of its own. “As soon as we got there Keith looked at me and said we made the right decision.” Joyce says that being at Hospice allowed her to be Keith’s wife again, and not his caregiver. “Hospice is truly death with dignity. All the staff and volunteers made me realize that someone else could help me carry the load. At Hospice the nurses explain things and are always there for a hug or a chat. At Hospice you can be a family again.” Abbotsford is the only community in the region that doesn’t have a residential hospice. Currently, loved ones of dying people must travel to other cities to spend their precious final days and moments together. People often die in the clinical set-
ting of a hospital rather than the warm, natural setting of a hospice building. That’s why the Abbotsford Hospice Society is building Holmberg House, a world-class end-oflife care facility for adults as young as 19 and their grieving families. Holmberg House will be so much more than a building. It will be a refuge for the dying and grieving, a place where significant moments and lifelong memories will be shared. While nothing can erase the pain that comes with loss, Holmberg House will give dying people
and their loved ones the space to live through these moments with comfort, dignity, and quality of care. We would like to invite you to con-

CONTEST Rotary Club of Abbotsford Million Dollar Hole-in-One When Abbotsford’s Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest commences May 31st, participants will take their best shot at a life-changing sum of money. Rotary Club of Abbotsford members, who run the annual charity fundraiser at Fraserglen Golf Course, will be shooting for an impactful goal of their own. The local Rotary club has chosen Holmberg House, an adult hospice facility currently
under construction which will be operated by the Abbotsford Hospice Society, as its primary beneficiary for each of the previous two Hole-inOne contests, and it will be once again this year. Funds will also be provided to other Rotary projects. Hugh Ellis, Rotary Club of Abbotsford incoming president, said they’re aiming to reach their $125,000 total fundraising goal this year, which would sponsor a room
at Holmberg House. They would need to generate in excess of $50,000 at this year’s event to get there. “I think it would be a wonderful contribution from Rotary, to have a room named and to assist in the ongoing operation of hospice,” Ellis said. “We’re really looking forward to the public getting behind us to help raise these funds, and have a great time doing it.”
This year’s Million Dollar Hole-in-One begins on Saturday, May 31 and continues through June 7 at Fraserglen Golf Course. The quarter-finals, semifinals and finals all run on Sunday, June 8. The contest is open to golfers of all ages. During the qualifying days, golfers can pay $10 for 12 balls or $20 for 30 balls and take a shot at a pin 95 yards away. The top seven closest to the pin each day win a spot in the
quarter-final round, plus a prize from a daily prize pool. Five additional quarter-finalists will be randomly drawn each day, and the top 10 finishers from ladies day (Wednesday, June 4) will also participate. Each of the quarter-finalists will have three shots at a pin approximately 165 yards away. If their ball finds the hole, top prizes include a vehicle from Magnuson Ford, a motorcycle from Mountainview Harley-Davidson, and a $10,000 cash prize
sponsored by Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes. The 10 closest to the pin from the quarters move on to the semis, where they get one chance to hole out for a $100,000 prize sponsored by Raymond James. CONTEST Rotary Club of Abbotsford Million Dollar Hole-in-One When Abbotsford’s Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest commences May 31st, participants will take their best shot at a life-changing sum of money. Rotary Club of Abbotsford members, who run the annual charity fundraiser at Fraserglen Golf Course, will be shooting for an impactful goal of their own. The local Rotary club has chosen Holmberg House, an adult hospice facility currently
under construction which will be operated by the Abbotsford Hospice Society, as its primary beneficiary for each of the previous two Hole-inOne contests, and it will be once again this year. Funds will also be provided to other Rotary projects. Hugh Ellis, Rotary Club of Abbotsford incoming president, said they’re aiming to reach their $125,000 total fundraising goal this year, which would sponsor a room
at Holmberg House. They would need to generate in excess of $50,000 at this year’s event to get there. “I think it would be a wonderful contribution from Rotary, to have a room named and to assist in the ongoing operation of hospice,” Ellis said. “We’re really looking forward to the public getting behind us to help raise these funds, and have a great time doing it.”
This year’s Million Dollar Hole-in-One begins on Saturday, May 31 and continues through June 7 at Fraserglen Golf Course. The quarter-finals, semifinals and finals all run on Sunday, June 8. The contest is open to golfers of all ages. During the qualifying days, golfers can pay $10 for 12 balls or $20 for 30 balls and take a shot at a pin 95 yards away. The top seven closest to the pin each day win a spot in the
quarter-final round, plus a prize from a daily prize pool. Five additional quarter-finalists will be randomly drawn each day, and the top 10 finishers from ladies day (Wednesday, June 4) will also participate. Each of the quarter-finalists will have three shots at a pin approximately 165 yards away. If their ball finds the hole, top prizes include a vehicle from Magnuson Ford, a motorcycle from Mountainview Harley-Davidson, and a $10,000 cash prize
sponsored by Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes. The 10 closest to the pin from the quarters move on to the semis, where they get one chance to hole out for a $100,000 prize sponsored by Raymond James. The top three advance to the finals, where they get one shot at $1 million, sponsored by Matsqui Development Co. Ltd., which has come on board as the event’s title sponsor this year. Pair assists after Phillipines typhoon In the wake of Super Typhoon Yolanda (known internationally as Haiyan), two Abbotsford youth headed to the Philippines to help in the aftermath on Bantayan Island. Joel Trask, a 2011 graduate of W. J. Mouat Secondary, and Julie Thorne, a 2009 graduate of Rick Hansen Secondary, joined with Young Pioneer Disaster Response (YPDR), a non-profit group committed to long-term revitalization efforts. Trask joined YPDR in February 2014, interrupting his backpacking trip to help and leading construction crews building YPDR model homes for local beneficiaries. With experience as a carpenter, Trask trained locals in safe, storm-strengthened building models. Following her graduation from York University in 2014, Thorne headed to

says GVHBA Chief Executive Officer Bob de Wit. “Vancouver is a leading-edge city and the design and construction of our homes reflects this. We are proud to be working with world-class builders, designers and renovators.” Several companies won multiple awards. Among them was Best Builders, who went home with six awards, including Custom Home Builder of the Year. Their other awards were for Best Kitchen and Greatroom Renovation for Reviving the 70s in association with Sarah Gallop Design Inc., Best Accessible Renovation for The Homecoming, Best Renovation $300,000 to $499,999 (for Reviving the 70s), Best Custom Home: Over $1.5 Million for Orchard Way and Best Outdoor Living Space: New or Renovated, also for Orchard Way. it comes to ceiling decor and still the most popular, adding a splash of colour to the ceiling might be just what your room needs. But how do you choose which colour? “There are a couple of simple colour premises, that when followed, help to create a harmonious look in a room,” says Bell. “Cool and light colours recede, warm and darker colours advance.” When used on a ceiling, a light colour will make the ceiling appear higher, while a dark colour will make it look lower. Another way to make a ceiling look higher or lower is to paint the ceiling colour about six inches down the wall. Something else to keep in mind when choosing a colour for your ceiling is that the lighting will be very different. The same colour on a wall and a ceiling will look different as the walls are hit with more light. “The trick to ending up with a ceiling colour true to what you want is to make sure to hold the colour sample over your head,” Bell says. “That way the light will hit it the same way it will once the colour is painted on the ceiling.” Something that you should keep in mind however is that a ceiling is rarely perfect, and thus Bell recommends choosing a flat paint in order to hide some of the imperfections.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, try putting wallpaper on the ceiling. “People are learning that wallpaper doesn’t have to be just for walls,” says Anita Modha, owner and CEO at ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper. “Part of the allure of putting wallpaper on the ceiling is the texture and design.” Modha notes that bright and bold colours are the most popular for ceilings, but it depends on the room it’s being installed in. For example, a living room might be a better place to do something bold and graphic, while a quieter pattern would be more suited to a bedroom. “You want to make sure it’s something that you don’t mind looking at every morning,” says Modha. “You don’t want to be startled when you wake up!” One advantage of putting wallpaper on a ceiling is that it’s not a permanent change. However, she also recommends making sure that the work is done by a professional installer, especially when it comes to the ceiling. A very high ceiling would need to involve scaffolding, which is not something that most homeowners will want to deal with on their own. “It takes just a few dollars to transform a room from lovely to ‘wow,’” Bell says. “Don’t overlook those ceilings because they really do add a lot to the whole look of your home.”

Simplifying your life at home one,” he says. “There are also a variety of wireless controls and sensors, so your home doesn’t have to be pre-wired.” Having a good installer when dealing with putting home automation into a renovation project is paramount. “Your system will be as good as your installer’s vision,” says Rente. “That vision is important because the installer needs to have the ability to see what the project can be when dealing with a retrofit.” Because home automation can be controlled via wireless devices such as your iPad or smartphone, it is also important to have a good network. “You will run into a lot more issues with a cheap entry-level router than if you have a quality router,” says Rente. “You really have to rely on the strength of your wireless network with home automation.” The integral part of a home automation system is the home controller, which Rente calls “the brain.” “It will tell everything else what to do, how to do it and when to do it,” he says. “Everything else depends on it. You’ll also need an interface, whether it’s an app or a touchscreen.” A remote control is also a handy addition, allowing you to use a single remote for all of your devices instead of having to keep track of multiple pieces. Installing home automation
into an existing home can be more work and will take longer than it would to install it during construction, but Rente says not to let that deter you.

Firing up that barbecue can herald the start of summer and a return to spending a lot of time outside with friends and family. Hadwin and Nick Taylor. It’s been a while, though, since the club’s junior program had a great deal of structure. But that’s about the change, with the launch of a new multi-faceted initiative. “We’ve had pros and

we’ve had instruction, but we haven’t had anything formalized since at least 2008,” said Bob Simoes, chair of the Ledgeview junior committee. “The basic thought is, if we’re producing (great golfers) without much of a junior program . . . what would we do if we had a real formal program?” Beginning on May 26, Mondays will be junior days at Ledgeview. Starting at 4 p.m. each Monday through Sept. 29, golfers between the ages of 12 and 18 will have access to one hour of instruction followed by a nine-hole competition. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members, and includes a hot dog or hamburger and a pop. Alumni like Stewart and Lepp will participate as mentors, as will Hadwin and Taylor on occasion as their pro schedules allow. Lepp, a two-time contestant on the Golf Channel reality show Big Break, is involved in the May 26 kick-off event, demonstrating the “glass break” challenge popularized by the TV show. Additionally, organizers are undertaking several initiatives to make the game more accessible to youth. To begin with, they’ve reduced the cost of a junior membership to $350 plus RCGA fee per year. Abbotsford’s track and field stars shone brightly at the Fraser Valley high school championships, held last week at Coquitlam’s Towne Centre Stadium. In the senior team standings, three of the top seven overall schools hailed from Abby – the W.J. Mouat Hawks, with 97 points, finished second to Walnut Grove of Langley (135), while the Abbotsford Christian Knights (67) were fourth and the Mennonite Educational Institute Eagles (41.5) were seventh. Mouat also finished atop the senior boys, junior overall, and junior boys aggregate, while Abby Christian notched second place in the senior girls standings. Among the many individual standouts, Mouat’s Jayden Driver earned the aggregate award in the junior boys division after earning gold in the shot put and discus, and silver in the hammer. Abby Christian’s Aaron Postma (gold, junior boys 100m hurdles; gold, triple jump; bronze, long jump) and MEI’s Hannah Konrad (gold, junior girls 800m; silver, high jump; silver, 400m) also notched three medals apiece in individual events. Support local charities – vote for Abbotsford’s “Dancing Stars” The Abbotsford Community Foundation’s Evening in the Garden Gala on Saturday May 31st is introducing a fun dance component involving local “stars” who will perform in front of a panel of judges and Gala guests. Abbotsford’s “dancing stars” include: Mary Boonstra and Lorissa Arndt, Business Excellence Dancers will be performing a Latin jazz number called “Fever”; Charlotte and Rob Lepp, owners of Lepp Farm Market decided to celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary by learning to “tango” for their performance. Brother and sister act Denise Rathnam and Jason McElhoes, from Modpro Containers Ltd. are dusting off their dancing shoes for a “swing” number and Jati Sidhu and his young friends from UFV will represent the Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association with a “Bangra” dance. “Vote early and vote often,” said McAlevy. Edna Ruth Went to be with the Lord May 14, 2014 at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack. She is survived by her loving husband Art; her five children: Harold Isaac, Carolyn Rice, Wes Isaac, Naomi Wiebe and Gloria Wiebe with their respective soul mates, eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, three sisters and a host of relatives and friends. Edna was predeceased by her parents, brother Bill Delesky and sister Susie Willms. Graveside service was held Tuesday, May 20 at 9:30 am at Maclure Road Cemetery followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am at Clearbrook MB Church. Passed away on May 16th, 2014 surrounded by family at the age of 68. She is survived by her son Scott (Megan); her two grand-daughters, Hayleigh and Caitlin; her two brothers Eldon (Ruth) and Ron (Lynn) and many nieces and nephews. Sharlene was an amazingly determined woman who never let anything get in her way. She always had a smile on her face, no matter how bad her circumstances were and worried more about you than herself. She was a kind, loving, and generous woman who will be dearly missed. Sharlene suffered many strokes in her life and one of her most proud accomplishments was the formation of the Strokers Club in Abbotsford in the mid-1990’s. We would like to thank all the support staff at both Worthington Pavilion and Carelife Fleetwood for the wonderful care Sharlene received over the last 10 years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday May 25th, 2014 at Valley View Funeral Home and Cemetery, 14644 72nd Ave., Surrey, BC at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sharlene’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC.
Our father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather passed away peacefully on May 11, 2014. Sadly predeceased by his loving wife Edna, he is lovingly remembered by his daughters Judy, Linda (Ray); sons Ron (Lynn) and Ken (Gloria); sister, Kay; fifteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. At 93 years young he was a man whose love for his wife, family and the Lord touched lives too numerous to mention. His impact will leave a legacy for generations to come. We pray that we can continue to live our lives in a way that honors all that he has taught us. Our heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Eden Care Home who loved and cared for John for the three years he was there. He will be sadly missed by all.
