be school closures locally on May 28. “We are caught in the middle,” Melissa Hyndes told The Tri-City News yesterday in response to the BCTF’s announcement of plans for four days of rotating strikes across the province beginning Monday unless a deal can be reached at

the bargaining table. Hyndes, a Port Moody trustee, said she would wait until discussions with the district’s senior leadership team, and hearing from unionized support workers (CUPE Branch 561) before commenting fully on what the impact of the oneday walk out May 28 in

$150k to first Mossom milestone Construction has to start in time for fisheries window By Diane Strandberg ThE Tri-CiTy NEws

he people who are working to replaced the burned Mossom Creek Hatchery face a race against time as they still need $150,000 to build the facility in time for the salmon spawning season. The Port Moody hatchery, which has been an important contributor to salmon enhancement — and environmental education — in the Tri-Cities for nearly 30 years, burned down in December. And volunteers, including Pat Dennett, the experienced construction manager who is heading the rebuilding effort, have been pulling out all the stops to get funding and construction services in place so shovels can go in the ground by the end of July. So far, progress is being made. In just six months, plans have been finalized and a development permit application has been filed with the city; and contributions have come from a variety of sources, from $730,000 in insurance money to in-kind services and donations, including a $100,000 grant from the Pacific Salmon Foundation. The building’s ambitious original design has been scaled back and construction has been organized into phases to give fundraisers more time to get resources in place. The new twostorey structure will be all concrete — providing protection against fire — and Lafarge Canada has donated this phase

But $150,000 is still needed before construction can begin — and that’s just to put together the concrete shell. Another $250,000 must be raised to outfit the building with furniture, utilities and complete landscaping. Dennett notes the original plans contained a number of elements that were on a wish list put together by community members and students who were consulted in the design process. Many of these items, including a crow’s nest observation platform, have been deferred to keep costs manageable. As well, many

of the service providers have been tapped to provide assistance to the project, with the result that many businesses involved are not even charging for their work. For example, K. Spence Trucking donated backhoe work for site exploration while SNCLavalin Environment and Water put together the reports for the development permit application at no cost, saving the project about $20,000, according to Dennett. Still, much work needs to be done before construction can start, including receiving city approvals and obtaining the rest of the money. Is Dennett optimistic? Certainly, given the support that has already been provided. “Our problem isn’t insurmountable now to start construction. We’re relatively close to that target. I feel by the time we need it, we’ll have it.”

Everyone pitching in in the Dennett family It takes a team to raise thousands of fish and to raise the roof at a replacement for Port Moody’s Mossom Creek Hatchery. And one key component of the Mossom team is the family of Pat Dennett, the rebuilding project’s volunteer construction manager. Mossom co-founder Ruth Foster wrote this family tree of Dennett helpers: • Pat Dennett: Volunteer construction manager for the rebuild. After the fire, he hit the ground running. He is working fast, furious and full-time on this. He has a wealth of experience working with all the construction trades and has valuable contacts throughout the industry. He has called on a lifetime of favours to secure many donations, in-kind work and highly reduced costs on construction components. • Wynn Dennett: Pat’s 94-year-old mother. She mentioned that she was looking for a new painting subject and when Pat suggested a painting of the original hatchery, she put brush to canvas and did a beautiful painting of the hatchery that will be auctioned off at the July 13 gala (see story at right). see TOOLS, ZUMBA, page A4

Mom’s painting project will have place of honour

here is now a gravel pad where a building used to be and a hole is all that’s left of a concrete fish pond. But while a fire may have burned the much-loved Mossom Creek Hatchery to the ground, it didn’t destroy the memories and the sense of the place. For artist Wynn Dennett, a memory is a good a place as any to start to rebuild, and to help volunteers in their work, she has painted a picture of the Mossom Creek Hatchery the way it was before the fire. A few weeks ago, Dennett donated the painting to the

Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society in the hopes it will inspire volunteers in their rebuilding effort. One of those volunteers, construction manager Pat Dennett, is her son. “I happened to mention to him that I needed a new [painting] project,” she said.“He said, ‘I have one for you.’ “He suggested I paint the old hatchery and he sent me one of the pictures, and that was the result,”Dennett said of her latest painting, which will likely be installed in the new hatchery once it is complete. see FISH, page A4

She organized and put on our highenergy Zumba party fundraiser at Pleasantside elementary on May 9. It was a remarkable evening with about 40 women plus two brave men (Pat and one of our Mossom regulars, Wally). That netted $695 for the hatchery. • Ryan Dennett: Pat’s son, who is assisting with the design and supply of a glass floor skylight in the deck over the Coho tubs. • Emma Langtry: Pat’s granddaughter, responded after the fire by helping form an environmental club at Pleasantside elementary along with a couple of other young ladies. With the help of principal Heather Birnie, they held a two-day popcorn sale, raising $79, and have since done a coin drive at the school. • Lola Langtry: Pat’s younger granddaughter. She held her birthday party at Mossom — a forest party — and asked her guests to donate to the hatchery rather than give her gifts. She raked in $190 for the cause. • Judy Dennett: Pat’s wife is keeping the home fires burning, supporting the supporters. She participated in the Zumba party and attended the Fingerling Festival. So that’s one heck of a lot of help from one family.

On her visit to the hatchery, Dennett fed the coho in the tanks and toured the plot of land beneath the cedar trees, falling in love with the place. “My, what a beautiful spot up in the forest,” she said. That’s saying a lot because Dennett, 94, has painted all over B.C., including the Gulf Islands, and knows natural beauty when she sees it. She has shown her work, mostly oils, pastels, watercolours and acrylics, in several exhibits over the years and is a member of the South Delta Artists’ Guild. What she didn’t expect, perhaps, is how her visit inspired her to learn more about Mossom Creek and the hatchery work that has

“We’ll make the best of the situation,” Hyndes said, adding that the board “would encourage both parties to continue to talk this week and hopefully we can alleviate the decision for rotating strikes B.C.” Her concerns followed a press conference Tuesday at which BCTF president Jim Iker said the decision to move to stage two of job action was supported by a strong majority of teachers because of concerns about class size and composition and a desire for fair wages. A simultaneous threat to cut teacher wages 5% or more because of strike action is “just so disrespectful, so unnecessary, and we’ll be dealing with it at the Labour Relations Board,” Iker said.

Unless there is some compromise on major issues, one-day strikes with picket lines will be staged at one group of school districts in each of the first four days next week, with teachers returning to work across the province on Friday, May 30. Iker reiterated the union’s position that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and special needs support are needed to reach a settlement. Peter Cameron, chief negotiator for the province’s 60 school districts, informed the union last week that a 5% pay cut will be put in place “soon” in response to the first phase of strike action. The BCTF began lim-

ited work-to-rule action in April, refusing supervision outside classrooms and communication with school management. Rotating strikes were also authorized by the BCTF membership in a March vote, and beginning to shut down schools could result in an effort to cut teacher pay by 10%. Cameron said last week the union’s latest wage demand amounts to 15.9% over four years, far beyond what other provincial public service unions have received. The BCTF maintains its wage proposal is 13.25% over four years, including cost-ofliving increases based on each year’s inflation rate.

ere’s something to think about as the summer holiday — and summer holiday driving — season gets underway. While incidents of drinking and driving are on the decline, thanks in part to the much tougher provincial rules about blood alcohol limits, a recent crash in Aldergrove illustrates that some people simply don’t care. A 32-year-old Abbotsford man was seen by witnesses exiting his smashed vehicle, grabbing a case of beer and heading to a nearby fast food restaurant — despite having broken bones in his leg. The man had apparently been driving at a high speed. Witnesses report him passing on the right at a high rate of speed as he was getting off the freeway at 264 Street. Shortly afterwards, he smashed into a minivan driven by a woman and carrying five small children. Thankfully, no one in the van was seriously injured. The RCMP is now reporting that the man has no valid driver’s licence and the car he was driving was not insured. The case is sounding more and more like another one in Aldergrove that ended in tragedy. Carly Regan, a 13-year-old girl, was struck and killed by Paul Wettlaufer, a drunk driver who also did not have a licence. He did not come forward but hid his vehicle. It was found, he was arrested and eventually jailed. While such cases are, thankfully, rare, there are some people who have serious drinking problems and should never be driving. Often, they have lost their licences but continue to drive. All the laws in the world won’t stop them. All that the rest of us can do is be vigilant, report to police anything that looks like a problem situation and drive as cautiously as we can. – The Langley Times (Black Press)

Is it aboriginal education or just victim studies? BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA C School Trustees’ Association is calling for a mandatory high school course on the history of residential schools set up to assimilate aboriginal children into European culture. Trustees propose a 25-hour course required for all graduating students, using interviews with residential school survivors, presentations by aboriginal leaders and discussion of current events. This would build on aboriginal courses already in offered in B.C. schools, and a public education effort that began with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s 2008 apology and compensation for Canada’s residential school policy. BC Teachers’ Federation vice-president Glen Hansman gave a speech on the need for mandatory education to a 2012 teacher conference. He said current aboriginal culture courses are poorly attended and went on to denounce a

school system he said is still based on“colonialism”and a“settler construct”of history. “We need to acknowledge that racism is the norm in public schools — still today,” Hansman said. Is it, really? He also claimed that the purpose and legacy of the residential schools have been“deliberately hidden”from school curriculum. In lieu of evidence, Hansman recounted old anecdotes of American-style stereotyping from his own schooling in Ontario. But mostly, he demanded social engineering in schools that must, of course, include more funding, more teacher professional development time and an affirmative action program to recruit more aboriginal teachers. Do Hansman’s allegations reflect the kind of attitude that would lead to truth and reconciliation? Or are they signs of another unfortunate legacy, that of the victim studies mentality that permeates our universities? Here’s a suggestion for this mandatory course: Students could spend a couple of hours on one of the definitive works of B.C. aboriginal

history, A Stó:lo Coast Salish Historical Atlas. A long-term project of the Stó:lo Nation, the atlas has meticulously documented chapters on European contact and residential schools, and others that piece together oral histories and what few written records there are of B.C. First Nations life at the time of European contact. A journal kept at Fort Langley from 1827 to 1830 documents some of the raids between aboriginal communities on the Fraser River andVancouver Island, corroborating elders’ accounts. During those three years, Cowichan men attacked the Chilliwack Stó:lo community four times. In the same period, the journal records 30 incidents of inter-community violence, some reaching down to present-day Washington state. Atlas editor Keith Thor Carlson summarized the research this way:“Viewed from the perspective of the aggressor, raids and attacks appear to have been motivated primarily by a desire to obtain quick wealth [in the form of slaves and property such as dried and smoked salmon] or to exact revenge for previous insults.” Archaeological study of stone fortifications and weapons at fishing sites in the Fraser

Canyon traces a history of inter-community violence back at least 3,000 years. Historians characterize some of this as warfare. British colonial authorities had some “settler constructs”about these activities: They saw them as assault, robbery, abduction and murder as well as slavery. This is the seldom-discussed backdrop for the European settlement of British Columbia, the imposition of British law and the later establishment of church-run residential schools. None of this is to excuse the forced removal of aboriginal children from their families, the horrendous abuse and neglect, or the multigenerational damage to a culture already weakened by waves of smallpox. This 1928 plan to fix what was called the“Indian problem”deserves to be understood by everyone. But glossing over historical context and presenting a guilt trip to students would serve no one well.

This is not the result of garbage being out just on garbage day but a result of a few homeowners who do not manage their garbage properly. We can co-habit with bears — they do their own thing in the forest, without us providing garbage food. Please store your garbage properly, secured, and if at all possible in your garage. The Editor, During the ongoing discussions on the budget shortfall by the School District 43 board of education, superintendent Tom Grant and others, there was one forgotten group that was also affected by the cuts: 500 non-teaching retirees. The board chose to cut the non-teaching retirees’ extended health and dental benefits. We do not receive these benefits for free; on the contrary, we pay a large part of the costs and we will now be paying more, which will be a financial hardship for many. It is disappointing that prior to making their decision, the school trustees did not consult, meet or discuss with the retirees the impending cuts to our benefits. The board, in all its wisdom, cut services to the most vulnerable in this district: the students who are starting out on life’s path and the retirees who are nearing the end of their journey. The children of SD43 are our most precious and valuable resource but we retirees are important, too. We have been good employees and concerned citizens, and some of us are the grandparents of students. Although it seems some at the board would like to place us among the ghosts of Christmas past, we are still alive and kicking. Cormoran is almost Hagrid-like: a tough, larger-than-life character with a lot of personality. The use of Latin, the detailed descriptions of food and the abundance of great characters all make this book a fun and engaging read with a delightful mystery that will satisfy Rowling fans. Goodbye to music biz By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

oy Sawyer made a life decision on her last birthday. Realizing “I’m not Benjamin Button” and the clock would not be turning back, the founder of Coquitlam Music agreed it was time to say goodbye to her business after 43 years and finally enjoy her golden years. It was a tough choice — and one that her kids had been pressing her to make for years. “My age is catching up to me,” the 73-year-old grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of three said from her Port Coquitlam shop last week. “I’m not going to live forever.” The drive to PoCo from her Maple Ridge home and back after a 12-hour shift also took its toll, she said. Still, Sawyer had been preparing for the change for a while. A few years ago, she downsized her business to ready for retirement; her lease is also up this fall. Sawyer bought the business in 1971 from Brentwood Music, which was closing up. She had been its accordion teacher for eight years and purchased the company’s PoCo studio, incorporating it the next year as Coquitlam Music. “I wanted to have my own music business and my own studios. My love was music and I wanted to continue that,” she said. Sawyer started with 50 students and quickly learned the ropes to manage a store. Today, she has 270 students — ranging in age from five to 80 — from the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Burnaby and Langley that receive weekly private lessons; many have gone on to study music at post-secondary schools and some have carried on with professional music careers.

Sawyer’s teachers have all been offered studio space at Crossroads Guitar & Drums in Port Moody and Salina Cheng Music Academy in Coquitlam, after classes wrap up on July 31. And Crossroads and Salina Cheng, as well as G&G Music in Maple Ridge, said they will also help to clear out her instruments and inventory when Coquitlam Music vacates on Aug. 31. Earlier this month, Sawyer gave notice to her students, parents and customers; she was surprised by their reac-

Music teachers formed the band while guitar and piano teacher Michael Cham was the emcee. Siedlecki, who Sawyer hired as a violin, piano and vocal teacher 26 years ago, “is the best thing I got out of my business,”she said. As for her next move, Sawyer said she’ll keep the company but she and Siedlecki will teach from their home. She’ll also have a bit more time for her family and to garden. “I have been a teacher all my life, since my early 20s,” she said. “I can’t imagine not teaching music.”

Don’t cut SD43 music, prez says More than 2,000 middle and secondary students in the Tri-Cities will perform at the Rocky Point Park bandshell in Port Moody this weekend. But those in the audience on Saturday will be not only hear great concert and string music from the school bands, they’ll also be asked to show their support for music education. Kathy Fester, music director at Heritage Woods secondary in PoMo and president of the Coquitlam Music Teachers’ Association, told The Tri-City News that buttons with the slogan “Music+U=Success” will be handed out along with flyers to rally the public and parents to save music programs in SD43, which is now looking at operational cuts to balance the books. The board of education is facing a $13.4-million shortfall. Fester said decisions are now happening on how SD43 music classes will be affected in the next academic year for students in kindergarten to Grade 12. “We want to be proactive and send a message to administrators to make the right choices,” she said. “Music education opens doors for students and allows them to be whole learners. “It creates success in life,”Fester said. For the 6th annual district band and string festival of music on May 24, a total of 15 schools from SD43 will be represented. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the PCT Performance Stage at Rocky Point Park. The Port Moody Community Band is also scheduled to perform at the festival.

Stories from Riverside The universal love for stories will be the yearend theme for the multicultural leadership class at Riverside secondary. Next Thursday, 20 students at the Port Coquitlam high school will invite the public to hear tales from around the world — and told in different languages. The storytelling festival by the multicultural class follows last year’s wrap-up event on another popular topic that has no barriers: fashion.

“All countries love stories and many share the same story,” said teacher CatherineYamamoto. For example, most people know about C i n d e r e l l a t h ro u g h Disney; however, the rags-to-riches narrative was first penned in China in 850 A.D. under the title Yeh-Shen or Ye Xian. In it, there is a fish instead of a fairy godmother. The plot was later modified in 1697 by Charles Perrault in France “and that’s the

one that we all grew up with,”Yamamoto said. At the fest, students will re-tell Cinderella in English but they will also insert small translations in French, Chinese and Polish, she said. The celebration will also include a First Nations blessing from the School District 43’s Aboriginal education program to acknowledge the territories and speak about their creation myth, a symbolic story of how the world began

and how people came to inhabit it. Next, there will be break-out sessions for children with a Terry Fox librarian; a recount of the Filipino creation myth Si Malakas at Si Maganda; a reading of the Japanese story Little Mouse’s Red Vest in Japanese, French, English and Polish; and a reading — in Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English — of the Asian fable The Cowherd and the Weaving Girl.

Admission is with a suggested $5 donation and proceeds will go to support Yamashita elementary in Yamamoto, Japan, which was destroyed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. This past spring break, the Riverside multicultural students presented $1,000 to the Japanese school and sent a video with a goodwill message that included an appearance by PoCo Mayor Greg Moore.

A new art exhibit featuring the work 10 Port Moody-based artists will open tomorrow (Thursday). The reception for the display, titled Hands that Shape our Community, a project conceived and co-ordinated by Tracy Riddell, will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gallery Bistro (2411 Clarke St., Port Moody). Coquitlam Redlegs split a doubleheader with the Whalley Jr. Chiefs and the two games had split personalities. The host Redlegs won the opener 6-5 but dropped the second game 12-5 at Mundy Park. In the first outing, the BC Jr. Premier Baseball League teams were tied at two runs apiece after the first inning, then Whalley banged in three more in the third to take the lead. But Coquitlam clawed back, picking up a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and the winning run in the seventh, out-hitting the opposition 12-7 in the process. Pitcher Riley Engleson picked up the win with one shutout inning (and one strikeout) after Jared Clark pitched six innings, racking up four strikeouts and collecting seven hits and five runs. In the second game, Whalley had the game well in control by the time Coquitlam scored their five runs in the final two innings, with four-run third and fifth innings sealing the deal. Coquitlam RedLegs next play tonight (Wednesday), 6:30 p.m. at Mundy Park, where they’ll host the Vancouver Jr. Cannons.

Coquitlam Adanacs may not have kicked their 50th season off with a bang but at least they kicked it off with a win. In their home regular season opener Saturday evening at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex, the Sr. Adanacs downed the Langley Thunder 9-7. The scoresheet tells a tale of an even game: a two-goal differential, the same number of power plays and two pretty close periods. The two teams were knotted at two goals apiece after the opening period and Langley edged the locals 2-1 in

Gleneagle is headed to rugby provincials It was a hot day but Gleneagle Warriors were hotter. The Coquitlam secondary school’s senior boys’ rugby team trounced Prince of Wales of Vancouver to earn a berth at the provincial championships this weekend — the first time in five years a team from School District 43 is going to the B.C. finals. The Warriors earned the spot with a 26-7 defeat of Prince of Wales last Wednesday in scorching heat in Abbotsford. It was a crossover match between the Fraser Valley #6 seeded team and the Lower Mainland #5 team, with the winner earning the right to move on. Gleneagle jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead at Rotary Park with a try by captain Kallam Harley. The second half started with Prince of Wales successfully breaching the Gleneagle backline for a try under the posts but the Warriors tightened their defence and Prince of Wales did not threaten to score the rest of the match.

Lund going to Leos camp Langley Rams running back Nathan Lund is going camping. The Coquitlam native has been invited to the BC Lions rookie football training camp in Kamloops from May 28 to 30. Lund had an outstanding rookie season for the Rams’ junior football program in 2013 as he led the conference with an average of 10.6 yards per carry; he finished with 699 yards and seven touchdowns on 66 carries. He was also a returner on special teams, finishing with 205 yards on 20 punt returns and 10 kick-off returns for 316 yards and a touchdown. He attended Centennial secondary and is entering his second season of junior football, which is for players 18 to 22 years of age.

WINGROVE, Larry “Buck” September 20, 1937 May 12, 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the death of Larry Allan Wingrove on May 12th at Royal Columbian Hospital. Known to family and friends as “Buck”, Larry was a real character; anyone who met him remembered him, always with a smile. He was a long-time employee of CP Rail in Port Coquitlam, working in maintenance. An avid baseball fan, he coached the Bad News Bears in PoCo and enjoyed going to the Nat to see the Canadians. He loved fishing down the Pitt, and was a plain-spoken man - you knew where you stood with Uncle Buck. In retirement, he and Theresa got a kick out of car trips to the Okanagan and Reno. Larry was predeceased by his parents, George and Ruby Wingrove and by brothers Wally (Peg) and Bryan (Barb). Mourning his passing are his partner, Theresa Zappia; sisters Marlene, June (Arden) and Jill (Murray); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A service will be held at Burkeview Chapel, 1340 Dominion Avenue, Port Coquitlam on Wednesday, May 21st at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the MS Society, or a charity of your choice.

Making life easier with home automation By Kerry Vital Imagine being able to turn on your lights before you get home, or checking on your home security system while on vacation. Home automation not only makes everyday tasks easier, it can also make for a simpler life. “It’s important to determine what you want, based on your end goal,” says Lee Rente, president of Encore Security and Automation. “Do you want it to automate audio? Visual? A security system? Your lights? It’s possible to do all of those things and more.” Control4 is one of the most popular home automation systems and is able to be installed in both existing and new construction homes. “It’s a scalable system,” says Rente. “You can start small and expand as you go. Every piece you add can be utilized as you expand the system. Everything works as one to create a larger, stronger system.” Light switches and dimmers are particularly popular items, and can make a big difference. Rente notes that having the lights turn on when you enter your home at night is one of the most-requested options, and can be accomplished with any automated switch or dimmer. “Any light switch can be swapped out for an automated one,” he says. “There are also a variety of wireless controls and sensors, so your home doesn’t have to be pre-wired.” Having a good installer when dealing with putting home automation into a renovation project is paramount.

“Your system will be as good as your installer’s vision,” says Rente. “That vision is important because the installer needs to have the ability to see what the project can be when dealing with a retrofit.” Because home automation can be controlled via wireless devices such as your iPad or smartphone, it is also important to have a good network. “You will run into a lot more issues with a cheap entry-level router than if you have a quality router,” says Rente. “You really have to rely on the strength of your wireless network with home automation.” The integral part of a home automation system is the home controller, which Rente calls “the

brain.” “It will tell everything else what to do, how to do it and when to do it,” he says. “Everything else depends on it. You’ll also need an interface, whether it’s an app or a touchscreen.” A remote control is also a handy addition, allowing you to use a single remote for all of your devices instead of having to keep track of multiple pieces. Installing home automation into an existing home can be more work and will take longer than it would to install it during construction, but Rente says not to let that deter you. “If you plan out the project and can use your existing wires and other technology, it doesn’t have to be hard,” he says.

Home automation can be installed in both new homes and existing homes, and can be controlled via smartphone or a dedicated touchscreen. Many things in your home can be automated, from televisions to light switches to your security system. Photos courtesy of Control4

The event is produced by the GVHBA Renovation Council and sponsored by FortisBC. “Professional RenoMark renovators, many of them awardwinners, will be on-site to offer expert advice and discuss their craftsmanship,” says de Wit. “Project values range widely, offering homeowners an abundance of ideas they can incorporate into their own renovations.” Project descriptions and before-and-after photos are available on the GVHBA website. The projects are located

all over the Lower Mainland. Admission is by passport, which can be purchased at each home for $10 each, with children 17 and under admitted for free. Purchasing a passport will give you access to all of the homes on the tour. Part of the proceeds will help fund the purchases of tools, building materials and safety gear for a carpentry training program at Guildford Park and Frank Hurt secondary schools in Surrey. Firing up the barbecue for the summer

By Kerry Vital Outdoor grilling is a time-honoured tradition. Firing up that barbecue can herald the start of summer and a return to spending a lot of time outside with friends and family. Perhaps you’re in the market for something new this year; happily, you’ll find a lot of choices. “Many people are now looking at products that make their lives easier, so less work is better,” says Darren Widas, sales representative at Trail Appliances Vancouver. “Many grills on the market still have cast-iron grates, and although great from a cooking perspective, they can rust over the winter. Stainlesssteel grates are much easier to maintain and require very little, if any, maintenance.” The barbecue itself will also be available in a wide variety of sizes. “It is best to choose something that fits your cooking needs as well as the space you are planning on putting it in,” Widas says. Natural gas has become a popular fuel source for outdoor grills. “The quick-disconnect natural gas connections allow the easy disconnection of your barbecue so it can be moved and/or stored elsewhere as well as provide an endless supply of fuel; no more having to fill heavy propane bottles and pack them around,” says Widas. No matter the fuel source, there are still a few things you need to keep in mind. “There are many options in outdoor grills these days, but sometimes the physical details can cause issues,” says Widas. For example, “if you have a natural gas connection it is best to make sure that you have enough pressure and an appropriately sized line to supply the grill of your choice; too small a supply will not allow your grill to perform as it was designed to.” There are several new innovations on the market this year. “Interior lighting allows the use of your grill in the

Lynx’s new design allows you to turn the burner on high to sear that baseball steak or to be set very low to cook a delicate piece of fish nicely. Best of both worlds!”

Like most home renovations, choosing new wall tile for your kitchen or bathroom can be both a fun experience and a stressful one. Options abound, and it can be tough to know where to start; no one wants their space to look dated too quickly. However, there are some things that never go out of style and will continue to look good for many years. “We’re seeing a lot more larger-format tiles for walls right now,” says Lawrence Pham of Fontile Kitchen & Bath. “Twelve by 36 is common.” Pham attributes this to trends in other products that are hitting the market. “Modern TV screens are becoming elongated,” he says. “It’s similar to that concept.” However, installing larger tiles doesn’t have to be more costly. “People see large format tiles and think the costs will increase, but that’s not always the case,” says Pham. “It depends on the materials. Ceramic tiles are the most cost-effective.” If ceramic tiles aren’t your style, there are a variety of beautiful stone options on the market right now. “Marble, limestone and travertine are still trends,” Pham says. He also notes the increased popularity of tapestry-style tiles in art deco patterns. “Styles are a throwback, but modernized now,” he says. “For example, the tiles you would see in an old-school pizza place” are popular right now. “Styles come and go,” says Pham. “We’ve seen warm matte whites for a clean look recently.” The most important tip that Pham gives homeowners is to get the help of a professional. “First and foremost, get a good installer,” says Pham. “It can be a nightmare if you have a bad one. Definitely check credentials before you hire someone.”

Wood planks installed on the ceiling might seem like you’re turning the room upside-down, but they’re also great for adding texture to a space. Beadboard can give you a similar look. “It takes just a few dollars to transform a room from lovely to ‘wow,’” Bell says. “Don’t overlook those ceilings because they really do add a lot to the whole look of your home.”
