After a six month hiatus, a Surrey-based development company hosted a three day invite-only meeting to discuss the future of their 341 acre property in the heart of Deep Bay. Fatal accident in Nanoose Bay An accident on the highway in Nanoose Bay Sunday morning killed a motorcycle rider. Oceanside RCMP report that a 33-year-old man from the Lower Mainland, travelling southbound around 9 a.m., lost control in the Nanoose Flats area and was found deceased at the scene. Cst. Doug Pennington of the Central Island Traffic Services told CHECK News the man hit the concrete medi-

A non-profit society received nearly $60,000 in grant money from the provincial government to tackle invasive plants on Vancouver Island, including in Parksville Qualicum Beach. Rachelle McElroy, executive director of the Coastal Invasive Species Committee who received the money last week, called the government’s contribution “critical.” McElroy said the grant will save taxpayers money in the long run “by investing now to prevent the introduction — and control the spread — of invasive species.” She said CISC works alongside the French Creek Society, Qualicum Beach Stream Keepers and Oceanside Broombusters, among the many organizations. “Invasive species degrade the
natural biodiversity of our ecosystems,” Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell said in a news release. “This funding supports the CISC work to control the spread of invasive plants.” A news release issued May 9 described invasive plants as “species that have been introduced into B.C. from other areas.” According to the release, invasive plants displace our native vegetation and can pose a health risk while adversely affecting our economy and environment by disrupting natural ecosystems, increasing soil erosion and altering the chemistry of soil needed for commercial crops. A total of $1.6 million is being distributed by the B.C. government to help local governments and regional committees.

People raising funds and awareness for difficult disease The Peoples Drug Mart Walk for ALS is taking place in Parksville June 8 starting at city hall. The funds raised will help support people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, through the ALS Society of B.C. Patient Services programs and research into a cause and cure. “Come out for a family fun event featuring great prizes, food and more,” said Darcie Nolan, the mid-Island coordinator in a news release. “If you’ve never participated before, make 2014 your year. Graduating high school students across the district and province are doing their Grad Transitions Exit Interviews and this year Kwalikum Secondary has made it even more of a community affair than usual. The school has been doing the provincially required interviews at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach for about five year, explained KSS counsellor Shelly Slaughter. This year, for the first time, they did group interviews with two grads being interviewed simultaneously by two adults and two Grade 10 and 11 students. “Our interview teams consist of teachers, school district administration, the Qualicum Beach mayor, town councillors, church pastors, First Nations,
Rotary members and students,” she said. Each school does the process a bit differently, finding the best way to help students transition on to the next stage in their life. Slaughter said they are taking the idea that “It takes a community to raise a child” to heart. The grads were asked informal questions about what they learned, what they liked or didn’t like about school and where they might be headed. Twenty-four people attended the meeting including representatives from the Mapleguard Ratepayers’ Association (MRA), the business community and local residents. Bains said RDN staff and board members were invited but did not attend. Bains said the meeting was not advertised publicly because BSI wanted to run small-scale workshops in an effort to gather a more comprehensive account of what the community wants to see in terms of development projects. “Last time around there were concerns the community wasn’t really consulted,” said Bains. “So we’ve restarted the whole project with a community workshop.” According to Bains, last year’s plan has been completely scrapped and the developers are now “seeking public consultation and working with the public.” Long time Deep Bay resident Marg Healey said she was impressed with the meeting — where every person in attendance had the opportunity to

contribute and communicate with the developers. “BSI went to great lengths to invite a large cross section of people to this meeting,” said Healey. “I have never been to a more civil meeting in 42 years and I’ve been very involved in
the community.” Healey said she likes this plan better than the last one and feels the developers are “going the extra mile” to consult with the public. However, MRA president Dianne Eddy is calling on the

RDN to conduct a neighbourhood plan for Deep Bay. “It’s a very complex issue,” said Eddy. “Unfortunately sometimes developers think development will draw young people to an area — that doesn’t happen out here.”
While Eddy confirmed the MRA isn’t opposed to development, she noted “we are opposed to development not respecting the RDN’s regional growth strategy and the official community plan — these plans represent the choice of residents developed by a democratic process.” RDN director Bill Veenhof said he is happy to see BSI consulting with the community. “I’m neutral,” said Veenhof, in terms of the development project. “I want the people to make the decision.” BSI project manager Jim Crawford said connecting with Deep Bay residents has been “an educational process for all of us.” “We’re trying to figure out what the community requires and what they need and want,” said Crawford. “These are the people that live in the community who, at the end of the day, will be neighbours to this project.” Crawford said an application proposal could be submitted to the RDN as early as the end of this year.

Tourist season
T
he tourist season is upon us in Parksville Qualicum Beach, a time when many businesses take in the bulk of their annual revenues. With this comes traffic and the wear and tear on our roads. And all of the services us locals use year-round. Thankfully, the provincial government recognizes this challenge for resort communities. Since 2006, through something called the Resort Municipality Initiative, the provincial government has doled out more than $87 million to help these unique communities with their infrastructure challenges. On Wednesday of last week, the latest round of funding — $10.5 million from the RMI was announced. Communities like Osoyoos, Revelstoke and Golden received money to improve signage and boat parking lots, build trails and enhance their waterfront facilities. There’s an extra-special club of communities — 14 of them — that split all the money. And Parksville Qualicum Beach can’t get in the club. When she was here on the campaign trail one year ago, we asked Premier Christy Clark if she thought this region had a chance to join the club. “I would be happy to sit down and talk to them about that,” the premier told The NEWS. “This community has all the characteristics of any great resort around the world.” Later, we asked MLA Michelle Stilwell if anything was up with this file. “Minister (of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, Shirley) Bond has offered to have one of her senior officials to sit down and review the criteria with both myself and our community if they are interested,” Stilwell told us. “The criteria to meet the threshold are very rigorous, but I will continue to pursue the issue.” A couple of months ago, we asked Stilwell if there was any news on this. She said Parksville Qualicum Beach did not fit the club’s profile and would not be admitted. She said if the rules were changed, too many communities would become eligible and the province couldn’t afford to broaden the program. Once again, no joy from Victoria for Parksville Qualicum Beach. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters SENIORS WANT TRAINS
Seniors need transportation as their ability to travel is reduced. More trails do not help. Train travel is more comfortable and you can move around and go to the washroom. Not worry about traffic. Trains carry more people and reduce road traffic. One dayliner coach can carry 90 people. Freight traffic can haul larger loads and take some trucks off the road. How many people remember waving at the train as it went by? Maybe the federal government should help restore rail service on Vancouver Island? AL NICHOL Qualicum Beach
NO TIPPING, NOT RIGHT In Tuesday’s edition of The NEWS, (May 13, p. A14) I see that a new restaurant at Pacific Shores Resort is evidently the forerunner for a no-tipping concept and the owner David Jones confidently states “this is going to create a social change.” He further states “This (tipping) is a broke system, a broken business model.” Jones is new to the restaurant business and also probably doesn’t realize that the restaurant at Pacific Shores has been through a number of closures and reincarnations for various reasons. My standard for tipping is 12 per cent. Occasionally, I will tip higher when service is very good/exceptional. Considering that restaurant prices have climbed with the price of food, this means that where a server earned, say an $8.40 tip on a bill of $70, they now earn $9.60 on a bill of $80 (15 per cent increase in menu cost). This means my servers have realized an increase of

more than 14 per cent in tips over perhaps the past two years. That’s a pretty good raise. Further to this, as a result of the HST fiasco, I do not tip on the total bill but rather on the subtotal, before taxes. Prior to HST, for most of my life I tipped on the total bill which was not smart but most of us did the same. We should all understand that when we add a tip to our bill we do so without paying tax on the tip. As far as I am concerned, Jones’ idea is far too costly and while some other countries have different methods for rewarding servers, very few arbitrarily add a compulsory tip portion to the individual menu item. In some countries, tipping is not customary at all. Suffice to say I will not be visiting Mr. Jones restaurant and paying a 19 per cent tip for my meal. I believe his idea is ill informed and perhaps rather dictatorial and it will be interesting to see the results down the road, if his business is still operating. ROB WILLIAMS Parksville
SCHOOL LAND TOO VALUABLE TO SELL
Public use lands offer significant benefits to the community beyond their educational and social opportunities. Full disclosure, my wife and I do not have children, so I am not vested in the closure debate. I must also admit that I provide consulting services for private developments. The demographic changes to our area have led to the need to close schools. It is what it is. What should we do with these ‘prime development’ sites once they are closed? These school sites are public lands that you and I have all paid for.
In my opinion, the preservation of public land use designations is a key component of a complete community. We may not need our land right now for schools, but we may in the future. The cost of assembling land after the ‘baby-boom’ bubble to accommodate large new school sites will inevitably come at a higher cost than simply retaining them for public use in the interim. Shortfalls in school district funding from higher levels of government and budget deficits are an administrative issue that should not be borne by our communities. Nor should our local government rezone these lands in order to mitigate such financial woes. There is some talk about how these lands are prime for redevelopment. Of course they are. Schools are planned and located within existing growth centres. Imagine the outcry if we suggested rezoning Rathtrevor because the economics didn’t work for it to be a park. When we look at long-range planning for our municipal clients, schools are often considered as, and tied into, a larger community open space network of environmentally protected areas, trails, and active recreation sites. These civic open space networks are the lifeblood of a community. Once these lands are rezoned to private use, they are forever lost as a community asset. Given the lack of indoor recreation space in our area, the loss of the school buildings will be a hard hit to what little amenities we had for prospective citizens. If we lose these sites, we lose a future opportunity, we lose our commons, and we prove that we have given up on the oft-touted vacuous political slogan “we need to bring in young families.” NIGEL GRAY Parksville

After establishing the settlement first known as ‘The River’, Nelson Parks, one of the early settlement’s founding fathers, called it Parks Village, a name that was officially designated as Parksville in 1900. Over the next twenty years the community rapidly expanded. With the building of a road connecting Nanaimo to Parksville and the E&N railway connecting Nanaimo to McBride Junction, Parksville’s own railway station, the population more than doubled over the next 20 years. By the end of the World War 1, the 1918 census listed 1000 people. To support a burgeoning community, businesses and stores were soon established. There were Post Offices in both Parksville and French Creek. In Parksville, Mrs. Ann Hirst who also owned and ran The Rod & Gun, held the contract to deliver mail. When the post office was moved to a small building on the hotel property her son John worked for her and eventually succeeded as postmaster until he went off to fight the Great War. At that point, his sister Leah took over the postal duties until she retired to marry the Parksville station agent. Mr. W.H.Lee was the postmaster at The French Creek Post Office until it was closed in 1911. The Post Office still stands and for those with a mind to explore the past, it can be visited at the Parksville & Museum & Archives. Frank Plummer was eldest child and son of settlers George and Elizabeth Plummer who built the log house that later became Shelly’s Farm and Trailer Park. Frank at one time drove the stage coach between Nanaimo and Alberni and was an enterprising young man. So in 1908, when the Ford Model T motor car made its debut, he was quick to join with Thomas Kinkade in buying the first Ford motor car in Parksville to use as a taxi. With the increasing popularity of motor vehicles, it was in the same year that the Rushton family came to the area where for many years they operated a garage. By 1912 Parksville had its own Bank of Commerce. There was a bakery and also a grocery store opened by George Wilson in the new shopping centre built he had built on the Comox Highway (now known as the Island Highway). George Wilson was also one of the merchants who could see the need for an improved firefighting service. He headed a group of like-minded citizens who raised the $200 needed to purchase a three-quarter ton Graham truck that had formerly been used as a vegetable wagon. It was in 1929 that the truck was stripped down to the frame and rebuilt by the Vocational Training school in Nanaimo as Parkville’s new fire truck. This was provi-

dent as just a few years later there was a fire in the government liquor store. Although the stock valued at $5,000 was destroyed, the volunteer firemen with their newly refurbished truck were able to fight the fire and prevent it spreading to nearby homes and businesses. It was 1942 before the first Fire Hall was opened. Today this can still be seen at the Parksville Museum together with a collection of photographs including the original Graham Fire Truck. One of the most significant early entrepreneurs was Edgar Dundas Thwaites, usually known as E.D. He was described as ‘larger than life … a man who could fill a room!’ E.D. established the first real estate office on the corner of what had become known as Hirst Street and the Port Alberni Highway, a business that still stands today as Thwaites Norris Insurance Office. Soon after establishing the office, E.D. held the first of the many auctions. His wit and repartee made him a name known across Vancouver Island. The building he first auctioned was bought by Mrs. Ann Hirst and
used to accommodate the overflow from the ever expanding school. The same building was later moved up the street where Alf Rheumer used it as an egg grading station before it went on to house Mozel’s watch and Repair Service. Interestingly, Parksville Museum & Archives has an egg-grading tool that may have originated at the egg-grading station. E.D. Thwaites was a man with energy, zest for life and a love of his hometown. Over the years that he spent in Parksville, in addition to his Real Estate business he played many other roles. During the First World War he took on the duties of Postmaster for the grand sum of $40 per month. This may have been an honorarium as, at the same time, a seasonal farm help would have been paid $47.85. E.D. (as he liked to be known) edited and published Parksville’s first newspaper known as the Parksville Journal. A copy of this may still be seen at the Parksville & Museum Archives. He wrote most of the copy and, it was said, also wrote contentious letters to the editor (himself) in his efforts to create controversy and debate.

This living museum is home to historic buildings from Parkville’s early days, together with a host of artifacts and archives. These reflect the daily lives, homes, schooling and worship of the early communities, together with an insight into the trades and industry of the area. So why not spend a day in the past at Parksville Museum? Explore the pioneer buildings, check out the artifacts and delve in to the archives. As grandma and grandpa wander around exclaiming “I remember this,” the next generation and their children will marvel at how the past has shaped the way we live today.

Piano trio A day for families in QB on Sunday Family Day includes a parade, activities, games, music, food and more EVENT

It’s time to celebrate family again in Qualicum Beach and this Sunday there will be a parade, activities, games, music, food and much more. May 25 is the 38th annual Family Day in Qualicum Beach and this year there will be some new things to discover on the Civic Centre fields, including Milner Garden’s Shoots with Roots program and interactive information about the Deep Bay Marine Shellfish Station. The evening before the parade, at dusk (May 24), residents can enjoy the Quality Foods Festival of Lights Fireworks down at the public beach area. Family Day kicks off with a Shriner’s pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the Civic Centre parking area on May 25, which runs until 11:30 a.m. From 10 a.m. to noon there is a free swim at Ravensong Pool (sponsored by RBC in Qualicum Beach). Pre-parade entertainment along the parade route includes the Rainbow Stew Cloggers and at noon the parade will take over the streets near Memorial and Second Avenue and head towards the Civic Centre. A piano trio will captivate a local audience Sunday afternoon at Vancouver Island Opera’s last recital performance of the season in Parksville. A piano trio is chamber music for piano as well as two other instruments, and on Sunday that will include Eric Wilson on cello and Gwen Thompson on violin. The two will accompany Nikolai Maloff on piano. Maloff has won a number of major piano competitions around the world including the Virginia Waring in the United States, Franz Liszt in Italy, and the Eckhardt-Gramatt in Canada. He holds a doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and runs a private studio in Vancouver as well as teaches at the School of Music at UBC. Artistic director with Vancouver Island Opera, Tatiana Vasilieva, is Maloff’s mother. She said chamber music is a form of classical music for a small group of instruments which could traditionally fit into a palace chamber. Musicians also got together at residences socializing and enjoying playing music, she said. A German poet described this chamber music gathering as a musical conversation between musicians and it became known as the music of friends. Hence this concert is titled, Nikolai and Friends, Vasilieva explained. Besides the piano trio, Wilson will play the cello with piano accompaniment on Sunday, and similarly Thompson will play the violin complimented by piano. “It will be wonderful music: Beethoven, Mozart and the music our people here love,” Vasilieva said. Wilson has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He is Head of Strings at the University of British Columbia’s School of Music. Gwen Thompson has been performing, teaching and coaching music for 45 years. She has acted as concertmaster of Orchestra London, the CBC Chamber Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Victoria Symphony. The recital on May 25 will take place at 3 p.m. at the McMillan Arts Centre, located at 133 McMillan Street in Parksville. For more information call Vasilieva at 250-586-6095. activities from 1 to 4 p.m. “My kids have decided they are doing the climbing wall this year so they are excited about that and they are very excited about the pony rides,” said Chairperson of the Select Committee on Family Day, Rob Ferguson. There will also be bouncy slides and castles, crafts, dancing, non-profit booths and room on the fields for people to play frisbee or other games. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s recreation department will once again be on-site facilitating active play for children, including soccer. There are a number of food vendors and there will be some picnic areas set up. A music stage will be set up on the field and the theme “Together We Can” will be bring-
ing music artists of all ages together. “It’s an intergenerational program where we’re trying to get younger ones playing with more established musicians,” said Ferguson. Vancouver Island University student Brittany Patterson is the volunteer co-ordinator this year and she said they are still looking for volunteers. She said the event is so popular because it provides such a wide variety of things for local families to enjoy. “There aren’t very many things around where you can spend the day with your family and it’s all free,” she said. Tsimshian artist, Dorothy Jarvis, has recently been traveling to old village sites along the Nass River in Northern British Columbia and she’ll be sharing her works of art and presentations surrounding her travels at Coastal Carv-
ings Fine Art Gallery in Coombs this weekend. Coastal Carvings is the sole gallery that represents the impressionistic painter. “She is a really special artist who is really concerned with preserving the stories and trails of her people,” said owner of the aboriginal gallery and
master carver, Jeremy Humpherville. From Friday, May 23 through 25 the gallery will be featuring Jarvis’ exhibition called Beauty out of Tragedy. The exhibition runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. It opened with little fan fare but Taste Café & Bistro is no longer Parksville’s best kept secret. Tucked away at Oceanside Village Resort on Resort Drive, the little café started serving great food on March 1 and since then has received so much positive feedback it is already number one on Trip Advisor. With Jason Hastings and Kirsten Ruryk at the helm, the bright and airy little eatery offers comfort food made from scratch with a modern twist. Hastings isn’t new to the culinary world. He was a partner at Lefty’s dishing up fresh food for 15 years but then decided to take things down a notch. “Lefty’s was great but as it grew it was a little too much. I wanted to do something smaller,” he said. Preparing fresh simple food in a small intimate environment allows Hastings to focus on the little details. The menu which continues to evolve is cleverly attached to

a bamboo cutting board and has plenty of options without being overwhelming. Hastings and Ruryk collaborated on their menu and after some research came up with
specialty paninis, soups, fish tacos with avocado cream and a smoked cheddar waffle BLT for some of their savory offerings. “We really thought about the menu and would research Pin-
terest on-line. We just wanted to take a classic lunch and put a modern spin on it,” he said. Hastings didn’t get any formal culinary training. The cook and restaurateur is self taught and over the years he said he has become skilled in the kitchen. “I learned on my own, basically cooking for family and friends. Then I got hands on training at Lefty’s where I learned to cook on line in a busy kitchen, everything from making pizza in our pizza shop to making full on dinners and I became the breakfast cook for a little while too. I didn’t go to school.” You won’t find anything out of a jar at Taste. Hastings said they make everything from scratch. “We make our pulled pork every day and we make our roast beef every day. Kirsten makes all of the desserts,” he said. Ruryk who loves to bake said her specialty is New York cheesecake with a mixed berry coulis as well as Guinness chocolate cake with orange chocolate grand mariner butter cream icing. “It is the best icing I have ever
made. After a few tries with certain things, I found some that I really enjoyed doing and they tasted amazing so we kept them.” The pair has been a couple for 15 years but it is the first time they have worked together and Hastings said so far so good. “Kirsten used to work in a pharmacy. We see the best in each other throughout the day and we work really well together,” Hastings said. “He is right handed and I am left handed so we stay out of each others way which is awesome,” said Ruryk. With just six tables and the walls adorned with art work of local pastel artist Dan Gray the simple décor allows patrons to appreciate the beauty of the food. They can also enjoy a glass of wine or a craft beer with their meal and on Friday and Saturday nights reservations are a must for tapas being served at 6:30 p.m. Taste Café & Bistro (250-5868676) is at 101-B 1080 Resort Drive in Parksville and is closed Sunday and Monday.

On June 21, an art extravaganza will be held at the Arrowsmith Golf Club in Qualicum Beach for Aldea Maya. The non-profit group has been assisting the indigenous Mayans to help themselves through education, nutrition, garden projects or micro-loans since 2008. In 2010, they began supplying educational materials for the Chukumuk Elementary School and in 2012 started a middle school. Three years later there are over 100 students in the school and the first group of Grade 9 students will graduate this October. Organizer Louise Sosa said there will be art work from some of the students as well as local artisans at the event. “We will be auctioning original works of art painted by talented artists from the Chukumuk Basico,” said Sosa. Cathy Vera Stewart, a painter from Qualicum Beach was in the village back in January. During the month, she mentored 10 students who show artistic promise and she says their art work is amazing. The students in Chukumuk will receive the exact amount their paintings raised and the money can be used to buy food and supplies for their family. It will also give them additional funds to use towards higher education. Tickets for the art and appy evening are $20 and can be purchased at Arbutus Emporium in Qualicum Beach and Our Glass Shop in Parksville. For more information, e-mail js0922@telus.net. A group of employees from the Qualicum Beach Branch of RBC Royal Bank of Canada joined Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) volunteers, May 3, to help get rid of invasive Scotch Broom from the sensitive ecosystem at the Englishman River Estuary. Before the crew started, a cheque for $1000 from RBC’s day of service fund was presented to the conservation group for its continued efforts to rebuild BC’s wetlands. The Orange Bridge Market opens for the season on June 14 and will run every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with a variety of vendors selling crafts and a wide range of items. The market, which is looking a lot prettier these days, is located in the parking lot of Lady’s Mantle in the south end of Parksville. Owner Donna Andres is thrilled the city dropped off some concrete planters last week. Donna has been trying to beautify the area and she has filled the containers with orange flowers she will be tending to all summer. Milner Gardens and Woodland is always full of surprises and from June 20 to 22, dozens of fairy houses will be showing up throughout the property. You are invited to search the garden to find as many of the magical creations as you can before they disappear again for another year. The gardens are open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. with last entry at 4:30 p.m. for self-guided searches of the miniature masterpieces. Qualicum Beach resident Louise Sosa is a tireless fundraiser for underprivileged children in Guatemala. She had an opportunity to talk about her charity, Aldea Maya to Stephen Fearing and Andy White, April 18, when they played the Errington Hall. The Canadian musicians support World Vision and are spreading the word about its work while on tour.
Members of the local branch of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and staff from the RBC Royal Bank branch in Qualicum Beach joined forces, May 3, for some wetlands cleanup at the Englishman River Estuary. Conservation program specialist for DUC, Jeanine Bond, and volunteer Rick Howe were part of the crew clearing invasive broom from the sensitive ecosystem.

The collaborative event was put on by the SOS, FRA, SD69, RDN and the City of Parksville.
8 year old Mia Matzanke’s garden in Parksville has a whimsical feature. She took part in a fairy garden workshop, May 6, at Lady’s Mantle and learned how to make the enchanted gardens with miniature fairy furniture. Owner, Donna Andres who put on the free event, has even more fanciful embellishments in stock so she will be hosting another workshop on June 27.

For 22 years, Suzy has been volunteering as an accompanist for the school’s choir and 18 of them have been with Deirdre. COUTURE, SYLVIE Sylvie Couture, 56, of Parksville, B.C. and Sherbrooke, Quebec, died Thursday, May 8th, 2014. She will be lovingly remembered by her many friends, family, and co-workers. Sylvie was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and moved to the Parksville area in 1980. Sylvie will be remembered for the Rainbow DayCare in Errington, the Donut Shop in Qualicum Beach, and as a long time employee of the School District, especially at Springwood Middle School, and for her work as CUPE president. Sylvie loved working with students, parents and staff. She was passionate about Social Justice issues. Sylvie returned to Sherbrooke in 2012 to be closer to her many siblings following the devasting diagnosis of very early onset Alzheimer’s. Sylvie is survived by her son Alex, of Vancouver, her eight siblings, and many nieces and nephews. We are especially thankful for the care she received from her sister HÊlène and family and also sister Christine, Teddy, and brother Michel who were nearby and often with Sylvie. We also extend heartfelt thanks to Madame MariÊ for her time with Sylvie. Her care and compassion improved Sylvie’s quality of life. A Celebration of Life for Sylvie will be held Sunday, May 25th, from 1 – 4 p.m., at the Errington Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Sylvie. Cards for Sylvie’s family in Quebec will be forwarded.
William James (JIM) Kingsley September 6, 1923 – May 3, 2014
The family of Jim Kingsley Sr. sadly announce his passing at NRGH Palliative Care, after a short hospital stay. Jim was pre-deceased by his wife Ruby in 2010 and by his daughter Joyce in 1971. He is survived by loving family: daughter Irene Maxwell, son Jim Kingsley (Cindy), grandchildren Brooke Maxwell (Jessica Hickman), Matt Kingsley (Deanne), Angie Webb (Randy), Ben Kingsley and greatgrandson Brad Kingsley. Also surviving are his sister Mary Kingsley, many cousins, nieces and nephews, Jim Maxwell and special friend, Ada Johnston. Jim was born at Wilson’s Nursing Home in Parksville into the Kingsley/Golding/Mills pioneer families. He attended school in Parksville and in Vancouver at Kitsilano Secondary. In 1940, he volunteered for the Navy and in 1944, qualified as a Paratrooper with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, serving overseas until the end of the war. Post-war, Jim apprenticed as a meat-cutter and went on to co-own Delta Cold Storage in Ladner for 20 years. He and Ruby (nÊe Clemence) were married in 1947 and lived their lives in Victoria, Ladner and Parksville. Jim was an avid fisherman and an active volunteer in many sports and community organizations. He and Ruby enjoyed traveling to Paratrooper reunions across Canada and Europe, particularly Holland. Jim was very fun-loving and social. He loved music and dancing, played a mean harmonica, gardened, canned & smoked wonderful salmon, told a good story and cherished visits, pictures and memories with family and many friends. Miss you so much Dad – Rest In Peace. Memorial Service will be held at the Parksville Legion, 146 West Hirst Avenue, on Sunday, May 25 from 2 – 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
DONALD W. CHATTEN 1934- 2014 It was with great sadness and shock that we said good-bye to our husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great grandfather, who died on April 29, 2014, at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital in Nanaimo. His great vitality, interest and humour was always the mainstay of our lives and it seemed impossible for it to be gone. Don had been born in Moncton, NB, moved to Ont. returned to NB. and joined the RCAF toward the end of the Korean crisis, involved in radar, ready to scramble jets out from Comox to defend our Western shores; later a business man and eventually his own business. In later years, he enjoyed traveling in our RV , from west to east and north to south, but always returning to the west coast which he so enjoyed. He loved fishing the small interior lakes, skating with his new friends at Oceanside Arena, volunteering his carpentry skills with the “Building Learning Together� Group or short walks to the Parksville beach or a turn on his bike in our neighbour hood which he loved. There was no service and cremation has taken place. Remember him as he lived: energetic, interested and helpful. A remembrance may be made to a group of your choice.

en Portsmouth never particularly liked competing in singing competitions, but he was glad he was nudged into participating in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest (UETA) in Memphis during Elvis Week in 2012. “I was very pleased and surprised to win,� said the Elvis Tribute artist from his home in England. “I am the first and only non-American to win the contest. [I] Never actually thought a non-American would win.� Portsmouth is making his way to British Columbia for the first time later this month, and after his performance at the first Vancouver Island International Tribute Festival this weekend in Parksville, he will be making stops at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre, Victoria, Surrey and North Vancouver. Portsmouth’s father was a huge Elvis fan and he grew up listening to and singing along with the music. Although he taught himself Elvis songs on his guitar at home, it wasn’t until he was in his twenties that he formed the Taking Care of Elvis Band in 2005, which includes his brother on drums. A new exhibition at The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) includes submissions from photographers who have interpreted paintings. Viewpoint 2014 features 22 artists and 25 photographers. TOSH Executive Director Corinne James said the pieces are influenced by artists inspiring photographers. James explained that back in 2012 during the 25th anniversary of TOSH they produced an exhibition called Viewpoint 25. Photographs were submitted and chosen by painters who in turn interpreted them in a painting. The photographs and paintings were hung together in an exhibition. "Two years later in 2014 the conversation continues, but we are spinning the concept around ‌ paintings to be inter-
preted by photographers." Running from May 20 to June 8 the exhibition will have submissions from shutterbugs who like to think outside of the box. "I asked for submissions from artists of diverse styles and mediums and encouraged the photographers to interpret the painting in their own style. The paintings are nonrepresentational as the photographs are the literal interpretation," she said. The intention of the exhibition is not to copy the painting but to be inspired by it without computer alterations although, enhancements are acceptable. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Wednesday, May 21 at 7p.m. at TOSH located at 122 Fern Road, West in Qualicum Beach.

Duncan Wilson will be stepping through the ropes to try his hand at boxing on July 18 at the Port Theater, just three months after capturing the Fivestar Fight League welterweight title. Wilson, nicknamed ‘The Heart Break Kid,’ will be making his professional boxing debut in Nanaimo in front of a hometown crowd. The Parksville product won the Fivestar championship April 25 with a second round TKO against now former champion Jonathan Cowan. It was a fight that almost never happened for Wilson, who sustained a fractured kneecap during training, as well as damage to his MCL. “Yeah, that fight was close to not even happening for me,” Wilson said. “I wasn’t sure if the knee was going to feel any better or worse as the time grew closer but luckily I was able to heal it up enough to the point that I could go out there and fight and the end result was better than I could have imagined.” With a record of six wins and four losses, Wilson has split his victories with three coming by TKO and three by way of submission. As someone who likes to stand and throw punches, Wilson is looking

forward to making the change on July 18 from mixed martial arts to the boxing ring. “I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been training in boxing for quite a few years now so it’s going to be pretty cool to have my first professional fight in Nanai-
mo,” Wilson said. “It’ll be nice to fight in front of family and friends too. I don’t get a chance to fight too close to home with the MMA so this is going to be extra special.” For promoter Terry Strawson, who is putting on this event along with business
partner Andrew Wilde, the chance to have Wilson on the card was a no brainer. “Duncan is an exciting fighter and having him be a part of this event, his first professional fight and my first card as a promoter, it’s pretty great,” Strawson said. “We’re putting together a really good card here for the fans and I think that it’s going to deliver.” Wilson will be fighting on the same card as locals Aubrey Morrow, Shane Andreesen and recently added Mark Woolnough. This marks the first time that Morrow, Andreesen and Woolnough will all be fighting on the same card, with all of them spending time training with local trainer Rich LeStage. “To fight alongside Mark, Shane and Aubrey, we’re all buddies so it’s going to be a blast,” Wilson said. “We’ve all trained together and been through a lot together so to have something like this come along is going to be a lot of fun. There’s going to be some added pressure of course, fighting in front of the home crowd, but I can’t wait for it. I’m happy to be part of this event and I’m happy to have a fight at home.” Tickets for the event are on sale at www.porttheatre.com under the events and tickets header, in ‘special events.’

The quest for the provincials has come to an end for the Ballenas Whalers Sr. Girls Soccer team after they missed out on advancing in the Island tournament. The Whalers finished third in their pool, not advancing to the game for the third and final seed to go to the provincials. The team battled hard but ran out of steam before making the provincials for a second year in a row. “We started off real well in the Islands, beating Gulf Islands in our first game,” head coach Larry Stefanek said. “The girls came out looking solid and played a
good team game that first game, so that was a positive sign right off the bat.” Ballenas beat Gulf Islands 3–1 in their opening game of the Islands, with Emily Robertson potting two goals and Sophie Palmer netting one, leading the charge for the Whalers on offense. It was another solid game defensively for the back line of Heavenly Brock, Olivia Friesen, Bronwyn Kirk and Tianna Squire. Their second game of the tournament proved to be more of a challenge as the Whalers faced off against NDSS. Finding themselves down 1–0 at the half,
Sophie Palmer found the back of the net early in the second half to knot it up at 1–1. That’s when the Whalers ran in to some trouble. “One of our girls ended up getting a second yellow card, which resulted in the red to send her off and it was on a penalty in the box to boot,” Stefanek said. “So NDSS scores on that one and now we’re down to just 10 players, which can be a bit of a problem for teams.” With the Whalers down a goal and down players, the team rose to the challenge and battled back, but NDSS managed to score one more to make it a 3–1 game. The
Whalers never quit and it was Emily Robertson putting the ball past the NDSS with time running down. Ballenas kept the pressure up the entire time, coming close to tying the game but time ran out on the Whalers and they dropped their second game 3–2. “We played really hard and the girls never quit,” Stefanek said. “They showed great determination with 10 of them on the field and it was nice to see them come together like that with it all on the line.” The Whalers needed a win in their third game to advance but ran up against a Lambrick Park
team that boasted the top scorer in the Island tournament. In the end, it was too much for the Whalers, as they dropped a 5–1 decision, which brought an end to their season. “The last game was a tough one. It’s one of those games where the girls played real well but weren’t getting any bounces,” Stefanek said. “We hit the crossbar a couple times and their goalie came up with huge saves. One or two bounces our way and it would have been a different game. But the girls had a great season and I’m proud of them for the way they battled.”

SCHOONER COVE
Changing winds in Bay Race Reverse handicap competitors start at different times T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
Overcast skies and a moderate breeze greeted the competitors at the May 3 Bay Race held by the racing fleet of the Schooner Cove Yacht Club. The race was a reverse handicap event where the boats started separately depending on their rating. The slower ones started first and the fastest went last, in hopes that they will all cross the finish line at the same time, with the first boat across being the winner. The first boat started at 10 a.m. with the rest of the fleet at varying intervals over forty minutes. The course took the fleet though a maze of small islands, around Cottam Point
and into Northwest Bay where they rounded the navigation buoy at the head of the bay and returned home. As they threaded their way through the islands and around the headlands, the boats were greeted by winds that changed speed and direction every few minutes. This created a constant challenge for skippers and crews to get the best result out of any given situation. Spinnakers were deployed when the wind was astern, then hauled down, stowed below and repacked to be ready for use again for the next wind change. The next event, a single-handed race, was scheduled for May 18 after The NEWS’ long weekend deadline.
