The sounds of summer will keep the region rocking as music festivals fill the air. The party gets started with the A&W Funtastic Music Festival June 27 to 30 at the DND grounds in Vernon. Classic rock takes the stage with headliners Nazareth and Trooper. For more details, check out funtasticsports.ca. The first annual Okanagan Military Tattoo is set for Aug. 1 and 2 at Kal Tire Place. A musical tattoo is a demonstration of military drumming, piping and skills. Visit www.okanagantattoo.ca for more details. Salmon Arm is going back to its roots for the 22nd annual Roots and Blues Festival from Aug. 15 to 17, a family-friendly event. Among the countless performers to grace the stages will be rock band The Sheepdogs, hip hop artist Shad and Canadian blues legend Doc McClean. to beat the heat There’s no better place to beat the Okanagan heat than at the beach, and we’ve got plenty of options. Kal Beach is located at the north end of Kalamalka Lake (in Coldstream) and offers a long meandering beach with a pier perfect for a sunset stroll. With golden sands there is a large area blocked off for swimming, and some great shaded areas for cooling off. A close walk away there is a family-friendly pub with an adjacent liquor store, a convenience store, a stand up paddle board shop, a booth to rent life jackets and kayaks, and in the summer there is a concession stand. Around Kalamalka Lake there are numerous smaller areas to take a dip such as Kekuli, Kalavista, Kirkland and Sovereign beaches. Further down the lake there is also Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, where you can hike into several sandy alcoves. While many people are attracted to the turquoise tranquility of Kal Lake, the region is also home to Okanagan Lake. Kin Beach is located at the far north end of Okanagan Lake and is a popular spot for a splashing good time. This popular hangout offers not only the beach itself, but a wonderful park with barbecue pits, a large grassy area, a playground, towering trees and covered picnic areas. Paddlewheel Park beach is also a great place for family fun and is located on Okanagan Landing Road with a boat launch on site. For a complete list of local beaches visit www.vernonbeaches. com. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can head out to the nearby provincial parks of Ellison, Mabel Lake and Fintry. Or check out one of the region’s many hiking and/or cycling trails. Wanting to get out on the water? Aside from owning or renting a boat, there are numerous ways to surf the waves without actually getting wet. Kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards are just a few of the options, with local rentals available, or harness the power of wind and go sailing. The snow may be gone but Silver Star Mountain Resort is still one of the hottest places to get your thrill on. Mountain biking, hiking, cross country biking, outdoor discoveries tours, disc golf and geocaching. Silver Star’s bike park opens June 26 and offers more than 1,600 vertical feet of trails and is rated one of Canada’s best mountain bike experiences. Bring the bikes out early June 21 and 22 to test the trails before the mountain opens to seven days a week, with extended play Wednesdays and Fridays. More trail is the direction this year with another 15 kilometres of trail opened and by 2015 there will be more than 100 km of trail to ride (both downhill and cross country). Jedi Mind Trick opened last summer to rave reviews therefore the resort is pushing the trail all the way to the top. The line has been flagged and the upper portion of the trail slatted to open late this summer, with the middle section in early 2015. There are bike camps available for riders of any skill or gender throughout the summer. Other events include the Silver Star Freeride Festival July 11-13 followed by the BC Cup weekend July 19-20. But summer at the Star is about more than just bikes. It will be a mountain of music and dance with the biggest piping, drumming and highland program in North America beginning July 6. Called Piping Hot Summer Drummer, the program offers participants the chance to learn from world-class teachers and performers. Aug. 3 is the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic. The Silver Star Wine and Food Festival goes Aug. 8 and 9 with wine Masters’ Dinners, alpine flower hikes, art gallery viewings, wine and food seminars and the Mile High Wine Tasting presented by Valley First. Nestled in between downtown Vernon and Kalamalka Lake, this semi-private course lets golfers enjoy a peaceful round surrounded by lombard poplars and weeping willows. There are 6,600 yards of fairway on this 18-hole, par 72, course. Book on-line tee times at www.vernongolf.com. If you are looking to challenge yourself, check out Hillview Golf Club’s fast-playing, 18-hole course that is short, but demanding. Sitting at par 57, only 3 holes are a par 4, but they are no easy task. With eight lakes connected by creeks and several sandtraps there are some obstacles over this 3,375 yard course. Try your luck at panning for gold and take part in some ol’ time fun. The BC Open Gold Panning Championships have moved to Enderby May 16-18 at Riverside Park (formerly in Cherryville). The family fun event is filled from morning to night with events like panning, gold rush, claim staking,dirt toss, pan toss, bannock baking, metal detecting, music and games for all different ages and qualifications. From large shopping centres to quaint downtown boutiques, there are lots of little gems and big treasures to be found in Vernon. The Village Green Centre is the region’s largest mall, located in the heart of Vernon on 27th Street and 48th Avenue. Among the more than 65 stores and services is the newest addition: Target. From all over western Canada, artisans of all venues take part in the annual Creative Chaos Society’s show, held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every June. For almost 40 years the Society has hosted this event enabling over 300 participants annually to display and sell their wares. Everything from handicrafts to fine quality art products are available with appropriate prices ranging from less than a dollar to hundreds of dollars. Specialty food items, homemade with taste and love, have been added to the Show for those who wish to experience epicurean delights. The Creative Activity section, another new addition, enables interaction between the artisan and the customer immediately, producing items or services to each customer’s preferences, such as henna tattoos, clothing apparel, and even palm and psychic readings. The yearly Show, located in 3 buildings at Vernon’s Recreation Complex, also encompasses an outside pavilion where a food court featuring over a dozen vendors, some with ethnic foods, can be found. A covered stage with seating areas complement the food court and it is here where the Performing Arts presentations take place. This section of the Show offers an opportunity for up-and-coming as well as seasoned musicians, dancers, vocalists, and choirs to entertain. All is done in a carnival-like atmosphere. The Society, a not-for-profit group of 30 volunteers, works to promote fine arts within the community. It offers an annual honorarium to local elementary schools selected to display classroom art projects, as well as awarding scholarships to graduates who will be furthering their studies in any of the fine arts fields. Round up your posse for some oldfashioned fun at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Founded in 1867, the working Ranch tells the story of early B.C. ranching endeavours. Visitors can take a walk through the old O’Keefe Victorian-style Mansion, view the original pump organ of St. Anne’s Church, shop in the general store, or visit the Blacksmith. People even still get married in the beautiful little chapel built so long ago. Guides dressed in traditional garb can tour you through the buildings that hold so much history. There is also an on-site museum to honour the heritage of the days of old and a new interactive kids centre. Guests can feel free to wander the pet friendly ranch and take in the collection of vintage farm machinery, pan for gold, see the huge model railway display, catch a glimpse of some of the critters or grab a bite at the famous Cattlemen’s Club Restaurant. The ranch also has RV parking and camping sites. Now open for the season, the Ranch hosts numerous events,

including Father’s Day sheep shearing, Movie Nights on O’Keefe Hill by donation and youth camps through Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation. Cruise back in time to the Vintage Motorcycle and Car Show July 5 and 6. Cowboy Dinner Shows are July 4, 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. There are two Family Fun Days at the Ranch, July 13 and Aug. 24. The Cowboy Summer Festival, which offers cowboy competitions, demonstrations and more runs Aug 2-4. Hot Rods roll into the ranch Aug. 9. Halloween is also a highly anticipated time of year at O’Keefe as the Okanagan Science Centre provides some spooktacular events. Family Day corn maze and pumpkin patch is open Oct. 18, 19, 25 ad 26. Or for the braver souls, the Field of Screams takes place Oct. 24, 25, 28, 29 and 30. There will also be a Paranormal Halloween at the ranch. Lakeside isn’t the only way to beat the summer heat in the North Okanagan. Vernon is home to the region’s only waterslides, just five minutes north of town. The ultimate fun-stop is above Swan Lake, where you can ride the slides at Atlantis Waterslides. The family-fun centre features nine slides for varying ages and abilities plus the popular river riot. There’s also a hot tub, mini golf, arcade, ice cream parlour, concession and more. The waterslides open June 7 (but are closed June 9, 10 and 12) to Sept. 1. This year they have two midnight madness events, July 25 and Aug. 15. There will also be free sliding for dads on Father’s Day (June 15) and the annual speed slide competition is back. For the littler ones looking to cool off, head to Polson Park, which is a beautiful place to visit on its own, and check out the free spray park. It’s open for weekends in June and everyday during July and August from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There’s also a wading pool for the little swimmers at Lakeview Park (AKA the Peanut Pool) at the corner of 18th St. and 30th Ave. for more free fun. hen it comes to hands on fun, the Allan Brooks Nature Centre and Okanagan Science Centre do it best. Accessed from Mission Road, above the DND grounds, the nature centre offers opportunities to explore nature inside and out. There’s a grassland trail where you’re sure to catch a glimpse of a yellow-bellied marmot, a habitat room, discovery room and n u m e ro u s p re s e nt at i o n s throughout the season. The Okanagan Science Centre gives kids and adults the opportunity to experiment and
