Mission and the surrounding area reaped a direct $1.6-million economic benefit from February’s BC Winter Games, according to an analysis released last week. The Economic Planning Group, which has done similar analyses for other Games host communities, reported that participants, spectators and volunteers accounted for $851,300 of spending while Games organizers spent $731,900. “As the Games are a unique, one-

time opportunity for athletes, the majority of spectator spending comes from parents attending the Games in support of their children, booking hotel nights and visiting restaurants,” read the report. This direct spending resulted in an estimated impact on the economy – including indirect and induced effects – of just over $3.2 million. “If nothing else, this is consistent with what we’ve seen in the past,” said Kelly Mann, president of the BC Games Society. “For a district

There were fewer athletes competing in the Mission event (1,847) compared to Kimberly (1,934), and due to the high number of athletes from the Lower Mainland/Fraser

Valley area, many families were able to drive home each night, instead of having to secure hotel rooms. There is also a “greater range of leisure activities in the metro Vancouver region.” Participants spent an average of $103 each, including 26 per cent on gifts and souvenirs, 22 per cent on accommodation, and on auto expenses at 15 per cent. Spectators were found to have spent $232 each, with accommodation accounting for 28 per cent ($64.99), meals at 20 per cent

Track work delays MRP’s biggest race ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The biggest drag race in Canada held at Mission Raceway Park has been postponed until September due to delays in track surface repairs. The National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Division 6 Lordco BC Nationals was scheduled for June 6-8, but according to information on the raceway’s website, all races up to June 1 have been cancelled outright. The Lordco race will now happen Sept. 5-7. Race track repairs began at the end of February, and a number of issues arose during the work that have added weeks of delays, said

B.C. Custom Car Association president Brian Nawyn. The association operates the raceway. The right lane was poured first, in late March, and problems immediately manifested, he said. The concrete mix was off and there were inconsistencies with the surface, with level variations between one-eighth and one-quarter of an inch. The surface was ground smooth, and then shot blasted – a process which uses mechanically propelled steel shot to texture the lane. This rougher surface gives the traction compound something to which to adhere, said Nawyn. Due to these prob-

The water discharge may contain the following constituents at concentrations less than the most stringent of the BC Water Quality Guidelines for the protection of freshwater aquatic life, CSR freshwater aquatic life standards, and the Hazardous Waste Regulation effluent standards for Hazardous Waste Facilities: light/ heavy extractable hydrocarbons (LEPH/HEPH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), volatile organic compounds (VOC), benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene-xylenes (BTEX), volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH), dissolved metals, chlorophenols, non-chlorinated phenols, sulphate and/or sulphide. The maximum rate of remediated soil discharged from this facility will be 60,000 tonnes/yr. The operating period for this facility will be 10 hours/day, 5 days/week. The remediated soil may contain the following constituents at concentrations less than CSR IL standards: LEPH, HEPH, PAH, VOC, BTEX, VPH, metals, chlorophenols, non-chlorinated phenols, sulphate and/or sulphide. Police are concerned about the increasing presence of tags around the community. A tag is considered graffiti, used to establish recognition, create intimidation and mark off turf. Mission RCMP Const. David Robichaud said he began noticing tags more than eight months ago and has been keeping a journal on markings around Mission. “They are all over,” he said. There are tags in the commercial areas of town, but Robichaud is mostly concerned about the damage being done in residential neighbourhoods, especially around the 14 Avenue area, west of Cedar Street. Some people report the mischief to police, but damage to public property, such as lamp posts and hydro boxes is almost never passed on to RCMP. Police have identified

Confront emotions and offer help

A spike in domestic violence in B.C. this year is a stark reminder that more must be done to address why men focus their emotional disturbance on women they know. More often than not, it’s women who suffer at the hands of their male partners in cases of domestic violence. There are certainly studies and case files of why men become violent and their inappropriate actions towards women and others. This is a call to politicians, activists, health care professionals and law enforcement agencies to not just leap to the defence of victims after the fact, but to provide resources to anyone when they need help dealing with massive and unwelcome change. It’s also a call to parents, family and

friends to confront emotions and uncomfortable situations with their loved ones head-on, and change attitudes about how men deal with it. This is not responding to violence with violence – it’s simply a request to be willing to talk about life with a friend or partner instead of avoiding it, and allowing it to fester. It’s also about individuals being responsible for their reactions to any given situation, stressful or not. Only individuals can control how they react and if we want them to avoid violence, they need the tools to take a better path than one that leads them to violence against another person. Everyone needs to speak up if they feel threatened or if they are in crisis – men and women. – Black Press

Building a refinery in Fort McMurray a smarter option I found David Black’s opinion editorial on the eventual destruction of the North Pacific most

interesting and timely, considering the federal Conservative government’s commitment on

making a decision on the Northern Gateway Pipeline in June of this year.

The idea of building a refinery in Prince Rupert has already been proposed by BC Green Party

Better thinking can help us live better lives On April 30, it was widely reported that the B.C. government has decided some courses like philosophy will lose out to business, commerce and sciences in B.C. post-secondary education. Yes, philosophy has been around for a long time. One of the first Western philosophers, Plato, founded the first Western university almost 2500 years ago in Athens. But philosophy is

also very contemporary. When Fraser Valley College began offering courses in 1974, philosophy was included, and a full-time faculty member was hired in 1975. For the 2013-14 school year, about 50 sections of philosophy were offered, almost all fully enrolled. The course PHIL 100: Reasoning has been required for most liberal arts students for several decades as an extremely practical course that enables students to

reason effectively with others and to assess the quality of reasoning in all fields including science, social science, arts, business, ethics and politics. In addition to its practical values for contemporary economic and political life, philosophy broadens the mind through engagement with ideas and questions originating in diverse times and places, encourages deep and clear thinking, and

ultimately encourages students to think for themselves in order to cultivate lives that are truly their own. These skills are essential to our roles as citizens, workers, managers, consumers, parents. Better thinking can help us live better lives.

Celebrating 100 years A local man with strong ties to both Mission and Abbotsford turns 100 years old May 14. Paul Singh Dhaliwal left Ludhiana, India on March 7, 1932, arriving in Vancouver May 9, 1932 after a voyage by train and boat. Dhaliwal wound up in Abbotsford, living with an uncle. Dhaliwal started work three weeks after arriving and worked at a lumber camp in Green Lake, outside of Squamish, eventually working in mills in Duncan, New Westminster and Vancouver. At this time, Dhaliwal had been participating in local wrestling matches and eventually he began to train professionally. In 1945, after being spotted by a promoter, he toured throughout the United States and locally. This endeavour culminated in a professional wrestling contract, and a scout from Hollywood had spotted Dhaliwal and wanted him to try out for a movie role. But in 1947, Dha-

While there he married Mohinder Kaur Dhaliwal, and returned to Mission in 1949 to start a trucking business, Paul Bros. Mohinder arrived in 1950, and they raised six children in Mission. The business was situated in Mission flats, and changed names to Mission Fuel Ltd. Dhaliwal delivered fuel to many families in the local area, and as the need for wood and sawdust as home fuel began to drop, he started to work as an independent trucker, eventually retiring in 1998 at the age of 84.

We sometimes decide whether someone deserves our forgiveness by carefully considering how many times they may have wronged us, or even by considering the perceived worth of the person. But is it truly forgiveness if we calculate whether the person deserves it? True forgiveness, like true grace, is unearned. Forgiveness that is deserved is really something more like a pardon, or even a person having served their time. To truly forgive someone, there should be no consideration of whether they are deserving of it or not. The true act of forgiveness takes place in the heart of the person who has been wronged, and has absolutely nothing to do with the person who committed the wrong. We see true forgiveness in God’s sacrifice of His sinless Son for the atonement of our sins. Nothing we did makes us deserving of that sacrifice. On the contrary, the whole transaction is pure grace; that is, a free and unearned gift. Our existence itself has the quality of grace because our lives are a pure gift, and there is nothing we did, in the past, present, or future to deserve the gift of life. So, we should not calculate or decide whether someone deserves forgiveness, but instead, we should just give it to them. Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? They took different routes to get there, but Mission hockey prospects Bailey Dhaliwal and Bronson Sharp have both had their rights picked up by Western Hockey League teams. Dhaliwal, a 15-yearold defenceman, was selected by the Vancouver Giants in the seventh round of the WHL bantam draft (for 1999born players) on May 1. Sharp, a versatile forward, was passed over in the draft, but was added to the Portland Winterhawks’ protected player list a couple days later. Both players suited up last season for the Mission Stars bantam squad, which hosted the provincial Tier 2 championship and finished fourth. Both are also part of the hockey academy at Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary and W.A. Fraser Middle – Dhaliwal is a Grade 9 student at Yale, while Sharp is in Grade 8 at Fraser. Dhaliwal found out he’d been drafted during warm-up for a hockey academy dryland training session. “Some of the guys had their cellphones on and they were checking Twitter,” he recounted with a smile. “All of a sudden I hear, ‘Where’s Bailey, where’s Bailey,’ and I look back, and they’re all jumping on me. It was a great experience. It was awesome.” Dhaliwal, who boasts a terrific frame (6’2”, 185 pounds) for a 15-yearold, said he’s pleased to stay close to home with the Giants. “It’s nice and close, and if I make the team, I can get season tickets for my parents,” he noted. Sharp, who can play centre or left wing, said it was “a little bit of disappointment” to go undrafted. But he was thrilled to land with the powerhouse Winterhawks, who have been to the WHL final four straight years and won the league title in 2013.

Silverdale outbuilding destroyed by fire May 10 No one was injured in a fire that destroyed an outbuilding housing a Health Canada-licensed marijuana grow operation in Silverdale Saturday morning. The main residence, located about six feet

away from the outbuilding, was not damaged, said Mission RCMP. Mission Fire/Rescue Chief Larry Watkinson said all three fire stations were called to fight the blaze at the corner of Silverdale

Avenue and Lougheed Highway. The building was fully engulfed by flames once firefighters arrived just after 2 a.m. Police believe the presence of a marijuana grow operation is a contributing factor.

â€œPolice are looking at any possible links, but there is no indication that this incident is linked to any other recent fires in the Mission area,â€? said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.

The incident happened just before 1:30 p.m. in the alley between First and Second Avenues near Grand Street. According to LeBlanc, her three small dogs began barking when they saw the pit bull walking towards them. “They got excited,” said LeBlanc, who pulled her dogs closer to her as the larger, unleashed dog approached. The two nine-yearold Havanese dogs named Buddy and Fluffy, and Tuffy, a shih tzu, cocker spaniel, and poodle mix, were on leashes and tried to hide behind LeBlanc. “The pit bull grabbed Tuffy from behind,” said LeBlanc, who was thankful police showed up at that time to help. LeBlanc attempted to

pick up Tuffy, but was bit on her hand by the pit bull. Witnesses at the scene said they saw the brown dog walking across Grand Street on its own and ran over to help when they heard screams and yelps from the small dogs. Grace Jones, who works at Stiletto Hair Studio, thought the attack was unprovoked. “I ran out there to help,” she said. “The woman had all three (of her dogs) on leashes trying to get them away from (the attacking dog).” Eventually the police and the owner of the three dogs managed to pull the attacking canine away. Two of the small dogs got away and ran down the alley and Jones helped unite the dogs with their owner. LeBlanc was treated for her injuries on scene and taken to the hospital for stitches, while Stan, who was

Standard features include tilt and telescopic steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, USB, 8-way power driver’s seat and more. But the back seat might be the best part of this car. The legroom has limo-like dimensions and the space side-to-side and headroom is ample. The trunk is also huge with a fold-down rear seat, providing more space than many small SUVs. Drive The Impala is now offered with a 4-cylinder or V6. The base engine is a 2.5L with direct injection unit and 195hp. My test Impala didn’t have this engine but I have used this new engine in the Malibu and I was very impressed with it then, one of the best new engines I have used. The V6 engine is a 3.6L direct injection unit with a potent 305hp. Both are matched to a 6-speed automatic that can be shifted manually but the shifter is on top of the knob, not the best place. The big car platform and independent suspension makes for a sure-footed ride with almost luxury-car feel. The road feel is there, but never intrusive. This big sedan can actually handle rather well. Not the choice for a backcountry road excursions but stable and secure feeling. Verdict Consumer Reports recently rated this one of the best cars they had ever tested, right behind the Tesla Model S and BMW 135i. This new Impala does everything a big-car buyer is looking for: It cruises with ease, has more than enough room for five full-size adults and the interior is quiet and refined. I would suggest that buyers

George went to be with his Lord on May 13, 2014 at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Florence and four sons Tom (Jane) of Vernon, Mike (Rose) of Matsqui, Roger (Helen) of Matsqui, and Stuart (Darlene) of Taber, AB, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was born in Heerde, the Netherlands on July 6, 1936. He immigrated to Canada in 1952. He became a clerk for the Hudson’s Bay Co. and spent 3 years in the North in Kitimat and Tuktoyaktuk as a fur trader. He came to the Fraser Valley in 1956 and worked for a farmer on Sumas Prairie. His next move was to farming on his own farm on 40th Avenue in Surrey in 1959. Next he bought a dairy farm on Sim Road in Matsqui and farmed with his brother Rudy for 6 years and then with his own sons until 1995. He enjoyed the land and making things grow. George served as an elder at Church for many years. He loved his family and instilled in them a great love for the Lord. The family thanks the doctors and nurses at Abbotsford and Royal Columbian Hospitals for their Care. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11:30 am at the Canadian Reformed Church, 33947 King Rd. Abbotsford, BC. HOSLER - Susan Wallace (nee Meekin) went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Saturday evening May 3, 2014 at the age of 96½ years. She was born in San Francisco, California, September 8, 1917. Her family moved to Duchess, Alberta when she was just a couple years of age. Susan became a full time home maker when she married Roy Hosler on August 31, 1942 and moved to the Rainier, Alberta area where Roy worked with the Eastern Irrigation District. Susan and Roy travelled in their RV’s all over North America and enjoyed fishing wherever they went. Susan was predeceased by her husband Roy on January 26, 1988; her parents Samuel & Margart Meekin, half brother Bill Scott and sister Elizabeth Plew. She had no children but cherished her many friends, especially those living in the Fircrest estates where she made her home for many years. The funeral service will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd with Pastor Dan Goldsmith officiating followed by interment at the Hazelwood Cemetery, Abbotsford. It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved mother, Marion Klugh, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2014 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre after a brave battle with cancer. Marion was a longtime Abbotsford resident, being born in the Abbotsford area and living her life in the community. Marion was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Kay Redekopp, and will be greatly missed by her surviving family; fiancé Rick Mayhew, son Ken Nyitrai (Irma Regier), son Tim Nyitrai (Bonnie Geddert), daughter Cyndi Nyitrai (Lorne Stewart), grandson Christopher Klassen, brothers, Jim (Brenda), Irvin (Donna) and Ray (Cindy) and sister Julie St. Andrassy (John) and many nieces and nephews. Marion will be remembered for her caring ways and willingness to help others. Her funny little giggle was reminiscent of her enjoyment of humor and her ever ready smile. She was a hard worker and inherited her mother’s love of cooking, baking and canning. She valued her family and friends and will be sorely missed by all. Graveside service will be held May 30th at 12:30 pm at Hazelwood Cemetery, Abbotsford. Followed by a celebration of Marion’s life at 1:00 pm at the Eagles Club Hall, Abbotsford. Mildred Mildred Lorraine Kraft, late of Abbotsford, passed away on April 30, 2014 at the Menno Home in Abbotsford in her 99th year. Born July 30, 1914 in Hayter, AB to parents Louis and Ellen (Garnett) Dionne. Predeceased by son John David Kraft in 1954 and husband John Kraft in 1995. Survived by children: Geraldine (Joseph) Farina, Mel (Willa) Kraft, and Lynne (Pierre) VanderStarren; grandchildren: Wayne, Elaine, Gerald, Tammy, Tiffany, Jonathan, Josh, Sara, Mark, Matthew and Michael; great grandchildren: Quinton, Daleela, Curtis, Kaylee, Jennifer, Andrew, Katie, Tegan, Celeste, Cassie, Josie and Ayden; great great grandchildren: Addison, Paxton, Olivia and Aubrey. Mom loved to play cards and bingo with many frequent trips to Reno. They did a lot of traveling with their camping trailer, including across Canada and California. The family would like to thank the Menno Home for all their loving attention in the time that Mom lived there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Menno Home Abbotsford. Mary 1922 ~ 2014 The family of Mary Parkes is sad to announce her passing April 29, 2014 at the age of 92 at Piccadilly Care Centre in Salmon Arm, BC. She is survived by her loving husband John of 65 years, sons Garry (Becky) of Winnipeg, Ron (Judy) of Mission, daughter Bonnie Peterson (Roy) of Salmon Arm, grandsons Brian (Erin), Greg (Sarah), Brad (Emily), Andrew, Bryn and Kean as well as 7 great grandchildren. Born in Alberta she was the last surviving member of her family of 5 brothers & 2 sisters. In 1947 she boarded a train to Matsqui where berry pickers were needed. She met John Parkes, a dairy farmer from Silverdale at a dance at Matsqui Hall. They married in 1948. The farm was sold in 1972 they retired to their new home. She enjoyed her large vegetable and flower gardens and traveled extensively. In 2006 they moved to Salmon Arm. In 2011 they moved to Piccadilly Care Centre.
