baby or sometimes early mornings and sleep when you can. Thompson is one of four siblings. The second eldest, she was already used to helping with her younger siblings, so she is better prepared for parenthood, she said. She sees former high school classmates from time to time and while they are pursuing their own lives independently she isn’t envious. “I have friends who don’t have kids. Having a child might change what you do every day but it doesn’t change who you are,”

Thompson said. “We’re just normal people and we’re still young. It’s just that we have children.” Living a normal life is something Darla Larocque, 22, is thankful for. The mother of two graduated from VAST last June and took a break from North Island College in December to give birth to her son Parker, who is five months old. Her daughter Channelle is three. Larocque is up early to make breakfast for her children and husband Josh before he heads to work and she to daycare

then school. VAST teachers bring math classes to Larocque three times a week, visiting her at home. But she still takes Chanelle to daycare then back home where the cycle starts again. “It just never ends,” she says with a laugh. Going to school and becoming a mother has its challenges for Larocque. But her struggles with parenthood and studies pale in comparison to what she’s overcome. Formerly of Victoria, Larocque dropped out of high school in Grade 8, got into trouble with the

law and was in and out of juvenile corrections facilities by age 16. She started using drugs and alcohol as a teen, and the drug use escalated into her young adulthood. She and Josh were living in Port Alberni and struggling with drug issues when she felt something different happening with her body. “I took a home pregnancy test but I already knew,” she said. “I was excited that we’d started something new, that I had a new life.” The pregnancy forced Larocque and Josh to reckon with their lifestyle. “We had something to live for and a reason to better our lives,” she said. “I didn’t want our baby to have the kind of life that we did.” The pregnancy was difficult, she said. “I was really sick for the first half of it [with morning sickness] but I was all right after that.” Her daughter was born the day she was due, on the first snowfall of the year.

School District 70 officials want to use the district’s $900,000 surplus to balance its debt and keep existing programs and services. SD70 secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham outlined the plan to trustees and the public at their May 13 meeting. According to Cheetham, the district is spending $900,000 more than it is brining in. “We can’t spend what we don’t have,” he said. Cheetham cautioned trustees about pontificating about inadequate funding on the part of the provincial

government. “But if we don’t have the funds we shouldn’t be spending them.” The district is either going to have to find some revenue somewhere or restrict spending, he added. While programs and services are maintained for at least this year the plan comes at a cost as three teaching positions will have to be eliminated. The hurt could come in next year’s budget though. The district will be forced to replenish its surplus as well as find another $500,000 to offset the loss of Ministry of Education funding protection. Using up the surplus is too risky, trustee Pam Craig said. “Other

factors could come up and we’d have no recourse, no fall back.” Cheetham said that there is about $60,000 left over and that staff are still crunching numbers to buttress the surplus. But registering a deficit triggers a formal process, and a plan would have to be developed with the Ministry of Education to deal with it, he said. More than 88 per cent of the budget is salaries and benefits costs, Cheetham said. “There’s a good chance what we find will be in employee cuts,” he said. Cheetham will bring a final budget for adoption at trustees next meeting. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Net pens stocked with Chinook fry West Coast Aquatic, through the Barkley Salmon Committee, has stocked three net pens with 100,000 Chinook fry in the Alberni Harbour. This year’s project follows a pilot completed last year with a test pen and

10,000 fish. Two 50-foot-square pens, frames and floats donated by Mainstream Canada have been stocked with 45,000 fry each near Somass mill. A smaller test pen with 10,000 fry is located right at Harbour Quay.

“In three, four and five years, these fish will return as adults to the upper inlet and hang around where they were released until ready to head up-river and spawn,” Bob Cole noted in a press release. The test pen off the

side of Centennial Pier is visible to the public. Volunteers ask that people respect the “no trespassing” signs, and to call the posted numbers if there is a problem with the net. The smolts will be released over the next two or three weeks.

Talks no ‘secret’: city

Closed door discussions between the city and Port Alberni Port Authority over two lots of land beside Canal Beach are a normal course of business and not secretive, city manager Ken Watson said Monday at a city council meeting. The city is in talks with PAPA that, if fruitful, could see Canada Alberni Engineering shipyards expand its waterfront operation next to Canal Beach.

According to Watson, the city advertised a request for proposals for Lot A beside Canal Beach, adding that industrial use was favoured. PAPA responded and negotiations ensued. An audience member at Monday’s council meeting criticized council for the closed-door talks. Private talks between the city and an interested party about leasing city property aren’t unusual, Watson said.

The Alberni Bulldogs’ fiscal fate will hinge on a decision from the Alberni-Clayoquot Region District. Team officials met with ACRD Alberni committee members on May 23, chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said. “ACRD staff has been directed to meet with Bulldogs staff to

explore a sponsorship program that would help the ACRD promote recycling and re-use in the Valley,” Dyson said. “This is something that would be mutually beneficial, not just a grant or subsidy.” On May 12, Port Alberni city councillors voted to table a motion denying the Jr. A hockey team’s request for a reduction in current debt with the

city. Instead, councillors will consider supporting a 50 per cent reduction in operating fees for the next two years. The team originally asked for a 50 per cent reduction on their ice rental fee but the plan isn’t possible. According to a report from Parks, Recreation and Heritage director Scott Kenny, the Community Charter forbids the city from

The team currently pays $4,300 per month in rental costs and $1,000 per game for playoffs. The team owes the city a total of $63,500 in fixed and additional costs plus payments to the end of July. The team’s last payment to the city was $10,000 in January. The amount will remain on the city’s books as accounts receivable items. Team officials committed to working out a repayment schedule with the city. Councillors Jack McLeman and Hira Chopra wanted to

know where things would stand with the city once the team is on better financial footing. “Where are we in the pecking order to be paid extra money,” Coun. Jack McLeman said. The city would have first dibs, Bulldogs business manager Lucas Banton said. “If profitable, the city will be first in line to be paid.” The Bulldogs are a big part of the community but business is business, Coun. “I was a little scared but I was excited about living a new life.” Larocque and her small family got a boost in the form of settlement money from a car accident she’d been in years before. But it wasn’t party time, like it might have been in the past. “We paid off fines, got a place and filled it with what we needed,” she said. “It really got us on our feet.” Larocque says she sees other 22-yearolds who don’t have kids and admits that she sometimes envies their freedom. “Sometimes, I feel like I’m 22, have two kids and stay at home. I feel like I’m 30—I feel so old,” she said. “But at school I get to act my age with other mothers who are my age.” Larocque and Thompson had goals and dreams before

they had children, and they haven’t surrendered them just because they’ve become mothers. Larocque wants to become a youth worker and work with youth who are high risk and have addiction and behavioural issues. Thompson, meanwhile, is determined to become a human service worker and is set to attend North Island College to achieve her goal. “I don’t want to live on reserve and be just a stay-at-home mom. Doctors ordered to pay $180K in damages ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A trio of Alberni doctors is being forced to pay a total of $180,000 in damages to a colleague after the Supreme Court ruled that they defamed him. In her ruling, Madam Justice Deborah Kloegman ordered that Dr. Shane Longman, his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Hankins and fellow physician

Dr. Akushla Wijay pay $50,000 each in general damages and $10,000 each in aggravated damages to Dr. Magdy Fouad. The group leveled what the court determined were unfounded accusations against Fouad. Kloegman also noted that Wijay breached Fouad’s privacy and assisted with defaming him in front of West Coast General Hospital staff.

The defending doctors were competent physicians and well-liked by their patients, Kloegman noted. “However, their uncollegial conduct, as relatively novice doctors, towards a newcomer who had much to offer them in the way of special skill and experience, is inexcusable.” Fouad moved to Port Alberni in 2009 and according to the ruling was the object of immediate

scorn by the three. “From a very early stage the defendants questioned his competency and were openly disrespectful to him.” Fouad studied medicine in Cairo, Egypt then spent five years in the UK specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and was a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Amalgamating with another school district and sharing services may be the only thing that stops further school closures in the Alberni Valley. SD70 trustees passed a motion calling for a meeting with the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association to discuss budgets, funding and

shared services, as well as other financial discussions. The meeting is considered an emergency and should be held as soon as possible, SD70 chair Larry Ransom said. The motion’s bland wording belied a radical concept that Ransom said is necessary to stem the financial bleeding that is plaguing the district. Specifically, Ransom wants to

start a discussion about amalgamating school districts and sharing services. The district could seize the initiative with the discussion or eventually be seized by it through a government decision. “We need to show leadership,” he said.“If we don’t do it government will do it for us, and we won’t like the picture.” Ransom advocated for the district to launch its own talks

with other districts. But trustees agreed that VISTA would be the best starting point. “We need to entertain a discussion about what are our next steps,” Ransom said. There has already been discussion provincially about sharing legal services, payroll and resource allocation, secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham said. “Everything is on

No dog house for Bulldogs B.C. farmland ‘holy war’ falls flat Do the Alberni Valley Bulldogs deserve the city’s help in straightening out their finances? The Bulldogs, Port Alberni’s Jr. A hockey franchise that plays in the B.C. Hockey League, is in trouble. Despite the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society taking over ownership of the team two seasons ago, the entity is not thriving. They are a year behind in paying ice rental fees to the city, and have asked for a 50 per cent break for the next two years to help catch up. The team has struggled off-ice with the community non-profit ownership model, and present business manager Lucas Banton admits that openly. It is worrisome that the team has gone through several business managers in the past two years, but it seems like the PAJHS is finally on track. Their plea for help from city council is testament to that. The team struggled at times on-ice last season, before pulling out a nailbiting—if you’re a hockey fan—late-season run for a playoff spot that fell a few points short. The Bulldogs have had few shots at a league championship in its 12-year history in Port Alberni; but this is the BCHL, not the Dub (Western Hockey League) or the NHL. One of the goals of the BCHL is to groom players for collegiate hockey, and the Bulldogs excel at that. As educational advisor Tom McEvay says, the team also teaches players to be community-minded. Players are involved in schools, with the regional district’s recycling plan, participate in community parades and make regular appearances at public events. They have the second highest attendance on Vancouver Island and even mainland teams are envious of the number of loyal fans packing the ‘Dawg Pound’. ICTORIA – The NDP’s holy war against changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve got nastier last week, as it became clear it was defenders of the status quo who were being mowed down. Ever since legislation was tabled to divide the ALR into two zones, with greater emphasis on social and economic needs to help viability of farms in the Kootenay, Interior and North regions, almost all the protest has been from unaffected areas. And much of it depends on emotion rather than fact. In the legislature, Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rose to praise the late Dave Stupich, who birthed the ALR sacred cow as agriculture minister in 1973. Krog likened Stupich to the Biblical Daniel for his bravery in preserving

farmland for our children’s children. Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley did his signature “jiggery pokery” routine, this time accusing cabinet minister Bill Bennett of being “giddy” at the prospect of paying off his friends with development land. Before he gets too jiggery outside the protection of the legislative chamber, he would be well advised to find some evidence. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who at least represents an area being given broader latitude for secondary uses on farmland, warned of drought in California. The history of this is currently a hot topic in the quasi-religious climate change debate. Meanwhile in the real British Columbia, life and farming go on under

the existing farmland protection regime. The largest ALR exclusion in B.C. history took a big step forward last week, as a federalprovincial review panel issued its report on the Site C dam proposed for the Peace River. The panel noted that the dam would flood 2,775 hectares of farmland, representing all seven categories of soil quality. Opponents use a figure about twice that size, as if all the affected land was farmable. The panel accepted that this land, including the small amount of microclimate bottom land, represents 0.2 per cent of the Peace region’s farm receipts. I would add that’s because what is farmed at all is mostly growing hay, which requires minimum capital and labour. “It

The ship dropped anchor in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet on May 23, 1914, but Canadian immigration authorities refused to allow the passengers to disembark because of the Continuous

am going to fill this column with tips for shooting children (with a camera). Numero uno tip is to be prepared: have the proper lens on, the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture all set and ready to go. You don’t want to fumble around with camera settings when the kids are ready. Shoot fast shutter speeds to stop action; 1/250 of a second and use a high ISO such as 400–800 ISO, or if you have a fully automatic camera then put the camera in SPORTS mode. Use a telephoto lens on the camera so that you will not be in their faces while taking the photographs and fill the frame with the

If the entire image is out of focus but the eyes are sharp then you have a photograph, so make sure to focus on the child’s eyes. If possible do not take photos between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., as the sunlight is very harsh at that time and creates heavy facial shadows. Should you decide to take photographs with full sunlight on the subject then use a fill flash. Most but not all automatic cameras will fill in the deep

facial shadows when you turn on the flash outdoors. Try it and let me know. Keep the background simple, move the subject further away from the background and use a large aperture such as f4 or f5.6 to blur the background while the child is in focus to give your images that 3D look. Try shooting in burst (continuous) mode to tell a story. Be sure to take lots of silly shots, you will love them in 10 years. Bring some old clothes and hats with you and let them play dress-up. The result is a net 280 horsepower. There’s also a 1,587 kg (3,500 lbs.) towing capacity. Looking at the estimated fuel results, it’s rated at 6.8L/100km in the city and 7.2L/100km on the highway. Keep in mind the aforementioned stats about its size and weight and those numbers are really impressive. My real world numbers? A combined average of 8.9L/100km. Not bad. Not bad at all. s the act of walking taken for granted? I think so! Done so often; it’s easy to neglect its necessity. It may be another reason golfers live five years longer than others. That doesn’t include golfers who ride motorized golf carts, however. If you golf regularly by walking, (one to two times per week), the physical effort cannot be denied its place in healthy living. A full-length golf course may occupy 150 acres of land. When a person walks 18 holes, the walking may add up to five or six kilometres! At a short course like Hollies, a walker

These are the prescriptions for mildly stimulating one’s heart rate and cardiovascular system. I’m not a doctor, but these claims seem legendary, bordering on common sense now. Pins, skins and wins for men at AGC The closest to the pin winners were: Cal Davies on No. 2, Glen Trask had the charity closest to the pin on No. 4 (taking home $30) and Sam Parhar won both No. 13 and No. 17. Parhar also won $50 for the only birdie on No. 17; the rest of the par 3’s were halved. In the skins competition there is only No. 16 left in the low handicap division. There was no winner on Sunday, which means the carry over for next week will be worth $135.

Another Men’s Club Sunday is in the books for Alberni Golf Course. The low gross for the day was Vito Caldarulo with an impressive 73. Great game, Vito. The low net in the low handicap division was old lefty himself, Keith Gauthier, with a smooth 65. In the high handicap division it was Cal Davies on top, shooting a 69.

Albert (Glen) Wilkie Passed away peacefully at WCGH May 09 2014, surrounded by his family. Glen was born on the family farm outside of Wapella Sask. March 14, 1939 Glen is survived By the love of his life Arlene, his Son Doug, Daughter Glenda (Rick), Sister Pat (Dave), numerous Grand Children, nieces and nephews, all very loved and involved in Glen’s life, and other family members. Glen moved to White Rock 1950. He started working in 1956 at Coastal Tugs. Glen joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957. While at Esquimalt, he went to the home of a ship mate, and there at the McClean farm he met and fell head over heels in love with Arlene.  Glen and Ar were married in 1959, and after 55 years they were still crazy in love. Glen left the Navy in 1970, and moved from their little home on Hampton Rd. to Port Alberni. Glen and Ar completed building their home on Sproat Lake, where the family lived and played until 2009. Glen worked in the Steam Plant as a Power Eng. (1st class) at the paper mill for M&B. Glen was a well respected, very fair to work with and for. Glen ended his career as Asst. Chief Eng. in 1994. Glen took early retirement, not because he had to, or really wanted to, but, because it would save a job for a younger person in the plant. That is just the type of guy he was. After retiring, Ar and Glen travelled all over the place in their 5th wheel, camping on the beach in Mexico, then in Yuma. They danced and just had a ball. They also cruised and travelled to many places. Glen enjoyed woodworking, gardening etc. Glen and Ar were avid hikers, spending many days exploring the trails around Port Alberni, and lots of different places. Ar and Glen took up Ballroom dancing, and spent many a night dancing and having fun. Ray was predeceased by his parents, his brother Stan, his sister Agnes and is survived by his loving wife Gweneth, son Sean, stepsons Terry (Diane), Jimmy, Walter (Sharon) and stepdaughter Carol Ann, and several grandchildren. Ray was a Steam Engineer; he retired after 27 years of service at the local Pulp and Paper Mill. He enjoyed his retirement, played some golf, fished a little and loved his computer.
