Homeless numbers up Abbotsford among Valley communities seeing increase

The number of homeless people in Abbotsford rose from 117 to 151 between 2011 and 2014. Though homelessness stayed stable in the Fraser Valley, the number of homeless climbed in several communities including Abbotsford, Mission and Boston Bar, while Chilliwack and Hope saw a decrease since the last survey, according to preliminary totals released Tuesday from the 2014 FVRD Homeless Count. The Fraser Valley Regional District count is

a “snapshot” or point-in-time survey, which was conducted by volunteers simultaneously as the Metro Vancouver count in March over a 24-hour period. “What we know, after doing this now for the fourth time in a decade, is that since 2004, homelessness is not just a Metro Vancouver issue; it is indeed an issue here in our communities as well,” said Ron Van Wyk, homeless count research co-ordinator, in a presentation Tuesday to the FVRD Regional and Corporate Services Committee. From 2011 to 2014, the overall total in the

FVRD has remained “fairly flat,” he said, shifting from 345 people to 346 who self-identified as homeless. The latest total is still well below the record high for the region of 465 homeless enumerated in 2008. When asked what would end their plight of homelessness, the answer most often given to volunteers was “affordable housing.” From 2011 to 2014, Mission’s numbers went from 54 to 75 people. An empty lot on Valley Road off the Abbotsford-Mission Highway is the proposed site for a transitional housing campground in Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Dignitarian Society, a group made up of 18 members, including seven from the homeless community, is moving forward with plans to build a project similar in concept to Portland’s Dignity Village. The location is next to the transfer station, across the highway from Willband Creek Park. The property belongs to a member of the society – and the group plans to enter into a lease. Paul MacLeod, former president of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) and a member of the society, said they have taken some of the homeless members to the site and “they are excited about it.” Though the site is further

The society is presenting its proposal to the city’s task force on homelessness in June, as they are asking for a temporary land use permit for the site, and for sewer and water supply. MacLeod

said sewer and water runs right by the property and they will be asking the city to install access on the site. If granted the permit, MacLeod said they hope to quickly move ahead with the project. In the meantime, the society aims to look after the immediate needs of the homeless at the camps in town, including food, toilets and garbage removal.

There are more men than women who are homeless, and 73 per cent are considered â€œunsheltered,â€? which is the technical term for living on the streets. A significant proportion are on welfare, about 30 per cent, while 13 per cent receive disability benefits.Â â€œAlso interesting to note is that there are also a few that do parttime employment, and even some that work full-time,â€? said Van Wyk. Many reported living with health conditions, such as asthma, arthritis or hypertension. Similar to previous findings nationwide, 22 per cent self-reported struggling with mental health illnesses or issues. â€œWe know from service providers too that the prevalence of people having a mental health issue is quite high among people who are living homeless, and presents a big challenge to those of us providing services.â€? Those who say they struggle with a combination of mental health issues and addictions are a significant number at 64 per cent.Â â€œAs leaders and people concerned about this, a big part of this for people living homeless, and the solution to it, relates to health services and health issues,â€? said Van Wyk. In terms of finding answers, he listed: better health services and access to physicians to deal with health problems, more treatment facilities and support for those coming out of incarceration. After the presentation Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman asked

what level of support would be needed to curb homelessness and provide affordable housing, and if those details would be coming in the final report. â€œWe talk about affordable housing, but itâ€™s a pretty broad statement,â€? Banman said. â€œIs it $300 or $500 that weâ€™re talking about, or what level would be needed to provide support?â€? Van Wyk confirmed that information would be forthcoming in a more detailed final report. â€œI donâ€™t say this in a derogatory way, but those who are living homeless, they are messed up,â€? he said, noting that some have had unconventional childhoods with â€œunbelievable forms of abuse.â€? What is needed in the wake of closed institutions in B.C., is more â€œhumane institutionalization,â€? and a way to deal with the culture of substance abuse, he said.

Don’t dump on homeless Two of the most visible homeless enclaves in Abbotsford were tidied up to a degree this past Saturday, as city workers, service providers and homeless residents gathered to remove garbage, but not displace the residents. The Gladys Avenue sites, including one across from the Salvation Army, and the teepee camp a few hundred metres farther west, were targeted to “help the folks who are in the camp to better health and wellness,” according to Salvation Army spokesperson Deb Lowell. The effort was initiated by the Salvation Army and the 5 and 2 Ministries, with help from CP Rail and BC Hydro. Dozens of bags of trash were collected and trucked away. It certainly doesn’t bring a long-awaited close to these unsightly camps, but it was a commendable initiative by the agencies and the city, and something that will help build better relations with

the homeless and, hopefully, a long-term solution. But what’s irresponsible in the extreme is members of the public dropping off items such as refrigerators and sofas at homeless camps, according to reports from their occupants. While it is conceivable the people dropping off couches thought they were doing a good deed, clearly they didn’t think about furniture sitting in the rain, becoming just more trash. It’s beyond any logic to regard a fridge being deposited at a homeless camp as anything other than illegal dumping. This city already has a problem in that regard – to the tune of $50,000 spent in 2013 to pick up other people’s messes left on roadsides, especially in rural areas. The homeless have enough issues of their own – don’t add to them with your junk.

On a warm spring evening, the big moon casting a ghostly glow over the landscape, there’s nothing like the stirring, ethereal songs of coyote packs; their yips and howls, though sounding mournful, are actually broadcasting success of yet another meal scored. Annoying though they may be if you keep sheep or chickens, their field foraging controls both the bunny and mouse populations. Better, particularly the latter, to have them in a coyote’s craw than in the house. At night, with the windows and balcony door open, the myriad frogs that

populate the ponds sing us to sleep, albeit for newcomers to the vicinity the constant spring-time croaking and chirping can be a little disconcerting. However, it is a sound you not only become accustomed to, but welcome when the weather finally warms after winter’s grip. Those same ponds also attract wild ducks, their flashy breeding plumage a beautiful contrast to the green grass and yellow buttercups as they root about for bugs and seeds. The ponds and frogs also attract another bird, the majestic great blue heron. Unfortunately, as they frequently fly from one favoured hunting site to another, they emulate the bombing runs reminiscent of Second World War newsreels. Nothing like going out to your car on a Monday morning, already late for an appointment, to discover a line of processed frog, fish and other food arcing from the front wheel up across the driver’s door, the windows and roof to the other corner of the vehicle.

letters Don’t give up The Abbotsford Centre is not doomed forever. The Heat was not the right fit for Abbotsford, but that does not mean the arena will never be cost-effective. For starters, there have been many concerts that have drawn large crowds, with some even selling out (Toby Mac, Florida Georgia Line). The citizens of Abbotsford are willing to go to the Abbotsford Centre, but only under the right circumstances. A proactive approach would be to get a temporary hockey tenant until the Utica Comets’ lease ends. When available, the Canucks would move the Comets to Abbotsford in a heartbeat. In the meantime, there are a plethora of local leagues that have teams that would be ecstatic to play at the 7,000seat, top-of-the-line centre. For this next year, however, the focus should be exclusively on broadening the market for shows and concerts. With a clean slate for the year, Abbotsford should try and attract as many headlining shows as possible. This will not only raise appeal for potential ticket-buyers, but also for potential performers. Lights not a factor Re: Lights chase away waterfowl, May 7. As a bird-lover, I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that too many geese are better than none at all, but I suggest that the cause for the fewer geese at Mill Lake does not lie with the lights. For starters, I’m not even sure the lights work, since geese are nesting on buildings around town under street lights, with good results. As well, a few healthy broods did hatch at the lake; certainly enough to keep them from dying out and also enough to provide us all with the joy of seeing goslings’ antics and growth. Although there were a good many geese in spring, most of them dispersed, as usual, into the countryside for the nesting season. They will return by the hundreds with their young in a few months. The same applies to many of the mallards and other waterfowl. The coots disappear for the nesting season, as do the mergansers and cormorants – they raise their young at sea and possibly won’t return until next spring. Les Friesen, Abbotsford

Residential spike pushes building permit values up Building permit values in Abbotsford jumped 115 per cent in March from February (seasonally adjusted), with soaring residential permit values offsetting a drop in non-residential values. Those numbers are according to the Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s (VCRA) analysis of Statistics Canada Building Permit Report. “March saw a dramatic spike in multi-unit residential permits, which will more than likely fall back to expected trend levels next month,” said Fiona Famulak, president of the VCRA. “Abbotsford’s economy continues to exhibit sustained growth signs that point towards upcoming residential and non-residential investment in the medium term.” Seasonally adjusted non-residential permit values fell 62 per cent to $2.6 million in March 2014 from $6.9 million in February. Commercial permits dropped to $1.2 million from $3.3 million, while industrial permits rebounded 161 per cent to 1.4 million from $0.6 million, and institutional-government permits fell to near zero from $3 million previously. The seasonally adjusted value of residential permits spiked 667 per cent to $18.3 million in March 2014 from February’s $2.8 million.

Metro Vancouver’s proposed bylaw to control the flow of waste out of the region, including banning shipments to out-of-region transfer stations such as Abbotsford, is the subject of opposition from the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. The local chamber and the BC Chamber are calling on the provincial government to reject the proposed bylaw, which critics say will be used to ensure there is enough fuel to justify building a new garbage incinerator. A news release from the Chamber states that the bylaw sets the stage for tipping fee hikes on businesses that could amount to up to 100 per cent or more within a few years in order to fund operating and capital costs such as a new waste-to-energy incinerator. “This bylaw effectively dismantles a market-driven waste management system and installs a monopoly – and the fees that go with that,” said John Winter, president and CEO of the BC Chamber. “If this bylaw goes forward, Metro Vancouver would have the unilateral power to hike tipping fees at whim, and with zero accountability.”

Mike Welte, president of the Abbotsford chamber, also voiced concern with the bylaw for shutting private industry out of providing cheaper, greener solutions to Metro Vancouver’s waste management needs, such as mixed-waste material recovery facilities (MRFs), which he said “are a more effective tool to maximize material recovery from waste without threatening our fragile air shed in the Fraser Valley.” John Winter said the BC Chamber and the chamber network across the region stand opposed to both the proposed bylaw and the broader incinerator plan. Among other things, the Chamber network has voiced concern with the incinerator business plan, which is premised on securing funding from two tiers of government plus achieving BC Hydro preferential rates for electricity produced. The BC Chamber and its partner chambers are calling on Metro Vancouver to pursue a more thorough examination of private-sector solutions to its waste management needs, with a focus on its own stated goal which is to maximize recycling and material recovery.

Abbotsford to host regional economic summit this fall Event will focus on opportunities and challenges for businesses The City of Abbotsford will host a regionally focused Fraser Valley Economic Summit (FVES) on Sept. 9 at the Abbotsford Centre. The summit focuses on the economic opportunities and challenges unique to small- and medium-sized businesses in the Fraser Valley. Building on the 2012 Abbotsford Economic Symposium, the summit has been restructured as a regional event drawing various levels of participation from the Township of Langley, City of Langley, District of Mission and the City of Chilliwack.

With a full agenda, the event will include a networking breakfast and lunch, three keynote speakers, a series of breakout sessions, and a mayor’s panel. “We are thrilled to see the support that industry and association representatives have already demonstrated and we believe that this year’s event will be better than ever,” said Jake Rudolph, the deputy city manager. Money provided to combat invasive plants

A pair of local organizations have received provincial government money to fight the spread of invasive plants. The Fraser Valley Invasive Plant Council will get $43,700, while the Fraser Valley Regional District will receive $25,000. The funding will be invested in raising public awareness of invasive plants, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating high-priority sites to control their spread. Invasive plants are species that have been introduced into B.C. from other areas. They

Invasive plants may disrupt natural ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry and adversely affect commercial crops. This grant is one of 29, totalling $1.6 million, which are being distributed provincewide to local governments, regional invasive species committees and the Invasive Species Council of B.C. to assist with their activities and support the objectives of the provincial invasive plant program. The program identifies sites where invasive plant species have been found and responds rapidly to contain and eradicate them before they become established and start spreading. This funding is in addition to the $809,000 already earmarked by the provincial government for invasive plant control and management in the fiscal 2014-15 year.

Abbotsford teams showed exceptionally well at the Fraser Valley high school girls rugby championships, highlighted by the Abby Senior Panthers and Yale Lions claiming regional titles. For the Panthers, this sort of thing is old hat – they’re the two-time defending B.C. AA champs, and they added another Valley title to their trophy haul by beating their local rivals, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves, 5-0 at Exhibition Park last Thursday. For the Lions, their 15-5 triumph in the AAA final over the Gleneagle Talons was of the landmark variety – it was the first

Mariners rally to win B.C. title Abbotsford’s Magnuson Ford United Mariners women’s soccer team won the Provincial ‘B’ Cup on Sunday, knocking off Bombastic of Vancouver 3-2 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. The Mariners controlled the early portion of the game, and opened the scoring in the ninth minute when when Kristen Vanderpauw buried a corner kick from Danielle Schmidt. Bombastic tied it up on a penalty kick in the 18th minute, though, and went ahead in the 23rd on a free kick from just outside the penalty area that found the top corner, just out of the reach of Abby goalie Karlee Arden. Vanderpauw’s second of the game, via a Megan Webster pass, drew the Mariners even in the 71st minute, and three minutes later, Shelby Beck slammed home the rebound off Ashandeep Sandu’s initial shot.

Rough week for Rebels

The Valley Rebels encountered some earlyseason turbulence last week, dropping two of three games. Abbotsford's senior B men's box lacrosse team fell 12-4 to the Ladner Pioneers on the road on Thursday before bouncing back with a 10-6 triumph over the Langley Warriors the next night at MSA Arena. As of Monday afternoon, Boseko Lokombo’s football future was open-ended after he went unselected in the National Football League draft. The linebacker out of Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Secondary recently wrapped up his NCAA eligibility with the University of Oregon Ducks, and was pegged as a possible late-round selection in last week’s seven-round NFL talent lottery. But coming off shoulder surgery in February, the 6’2”, 233-pounder did not hear his name called. The 23-year-old is now in the market for an NFL contract as an undrafted free agent (UDFA). UDFAs typically face an uphill battle to crack a team’s roster, but there’s a long list of stars who got their start that

Lawn Bowling Club starts season The Jubilee Park Lawn Bowling Club kicked off its summer season on April 30, and welcomes players of all ages to join in the fun. The lawn bowling club has been in operation since 1935. Jubilee Park is located near the area of McCallum Road and South Fraser Way in Abbotsford. The annual fee to play is $40 and entitles a person to bowl four days a week – Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weather permitting. The bowling times are 1:15 p.m. in May, 6:45 p.m. from June to August, and 5:45 p.m. in September. Bowlers should arrive 15 minutes before the start time so they can be placed on a team. Brown wins national photography awards An Abbotsford photographer has been named Canada’s commercial photographer of the year. Revival Arts’ Jason Brown also took home the best in class illustration award (Love Potion Number Nine), a best in class fine art award (Preposterous Erection), and a judge’s choice ribbon (Preposterous Erection). The Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) announced the winners of its 2014 competition at the Canadian Imaging Conference and Tradeshow April 29 in Winnipeg, Man.

This year, there were 830 images entered and 56 per cent were accepted into the National Image Salon. When assessing the submissions, judges consider impact, creativity, style, composition and technique. Brown said, “Winning the commercial photographer of the year award is a personal affirmation as all of the images this year were from self-directed projects that excite and drive me.” This competition includes entries from across Canada in 21 different classes.

Brown has been pursuing photography since he bought his first SLR camera from the “Buckpasser” in 1997 and studied commercial photography at Langara College in Vancouver. He has used his photography skills to support many nonprofit organizations locally and internationally such as Run for Water, The Crystal Gala, We Day, Matthew’s House and many more. He regularly does portrait and commercial photography for a wide range of clients throughout the Lower Mainland.

This year’s Mill Lake Cruise-in Car Show is set for Saturday, July 12, and co-ordinators are hoping to make this the biggest car show in Abbotsford. The event runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to all specialty vehicles and car clubs. The cost is $15 per vehicle with room for over 700 cars. Pete Zomar, who coordinates the event with his wife Robbie, said that after the enthusiasm at last year’s show, which drew more than 400 vehicles, this year’s event “will be the biggest car show Abbotsford has ever seen.” The show will feature muscle cars, street rods, hot rods, vintage cars, trucks, low-riders and more. The event is free to the public, but donations are welcome and all proceeds will go to the MSA Museum Society and the Abbotsford Arts Council. Non-perishable food donations will also be accepted for the food bank. Last year, the event raised more than $20,000 for local charities. The event will also feature food vendors, trophies, prizes, live entertainment and the first 400 vehicles will receive dash plaques. There will be a raffle with prizes including an 18-foot flatdeck car trailer and a 400-horsepower 383 stroker engine.

An Abbotsford mom and her son recently returned from a trip to Uganda, where they worked in children’s homes with Watoto, a non-profit agency that cares for 200 to 300 orphaned children. Amanda Rauh led a team of 15 people from Canada, including her son, Jackson, 7, on the two-and-ahalf-week trip. The group took 39 pieces of luggage that included items such as car seats, medical supplies, baby toys, formula and clothing. Ja ck s o n eve n brought along some of his old hockey jerseys for some of the kids. “They were wellreceived, even if they didn’t know what hockey was,” Amanda said. The team worked in three different children’s homes, providing care, feeding, changing and love. They also painted pools; built walls; cleaned, painted and organized medical storage facilities;

Within minutes, they were giggling and singing songs and telling stories to each other.” Amanda works with Watoto, which cares for children under the age of three before they move on to live with their adoptive families. She has been to Uganda twice before – the last time in 2011 – and Jackson always wanted to join her. Amanda promised her son he could come, but only if he could fundraise $2,000 towards the trip. Jackson raised the funds by selling lemonade, collecting recyclables, and selling chocolate bars and some of his toys. The two hope that Jackson can return again in a few years. Concert series SWEET set to begin & JUICY

The Abbotsford Arts Council, in partnership with Envision Financial, announces the return of the Envision Financial Coffee House Concert Series and Concert in the Park Series. Alzheimer conference June 5

Day-long event features a number of presentations A day-long conference on Alzheimer’s disease is coming to Abbotsford next month. Hosted by the Alzheimer Society of B.C., (ASBC) the June 5 event is titled “The ME in Dementia: Increasing Understanding Along the Dementia Journey,” and will take place at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre on North Parallel Road. On average, one in 11 Canadians over the age of 65 live with dementia – and that means their families and friends live with its impact too. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in increasingly impaired memory, thinking, reasoning, and behaviour. Age is the single biggest risk factor: while dementia can affect people as young as 40, the risk doubles every five years after 65. And approximately 14 per cent of the AbbotsfordMission population – more than 24,000 people – is already 65 or older. The first step to coping with this health issue, said Jan Robson, provincial co-ordinator of programs and services for ASBC, is education. “Greater awareness can reduce fears that many people still have about dementia.” The full-day session covers brain health, dementia and personal planning, and is designed to

benefit all residents concerned about dementia, she emphasizes. Presentations during the day include: Q “Heads Up” for a Healthier Brain: Strategies for improving the health of your mind, body and spirit; Q Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia: The difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and how the brain and behaviour are affected; Q communication and behaviour along the dementia journey: Explore ways to communicate with the person with dementia and understand how behaviour forms part of communication; Q personal planning: Legal options for planning ahead for the time when the person with dementia can no longer manage his or her affairs; Q research: Dr. Robin Hsiung from UBC will review some of the scientific progress being made in Alzheimer’s disease research and its potential future clinical directions. Ray passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014 with his wife and family by his side. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by Sonia, his loving wife of 30 years, his children and step-children Jacalyn, Brenda (Brent), Darrel (Julie), Rodney (Carolyn), Michael (Caroline), Karen (John) and Janet (Gord), 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth (Elsie) Gillberg, nee Hanuszak passed away peacefully in her 98th year. Born in Rosthern, SK, she was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Herbert (Tiny) Gillberg, son Robert Gail (Robbie), brothers Mike, Carl, Bill and sisters Isobel and Mary. Mom is lovingly missed by daughters Donna (Ernie) Morelli and Linda (Milton) Pearson, also daughter-inlaw Verna Blackwell (Robbie). Grandma is also dearly missed by her 5 grandchildren, Mathew (Gina) Gillberg, Lisa (Terry) Mellett, Martin (Jenny) Pearson, Mindy (Victor) Gratwicke and Bradley Morelli. 6 great grandchildren include Ryan and Adam Gillberg, Scott Mellett, Dylan and Skye Gratwicke and newest addition, baby Noah Pearson. Elsie loved and enjoyed family gatherings and was the envy of the neighborhood with her love for gardening, especially for the beautiful flowers she grew. Other hobbies she enjoyed were bowling, sewing, reading and her love for birds and animals. Vacations to Europe and many other places were also enjoyed by her and Tiny during their 64 years of marriage. Her smile and gentle nature did not go unnoticed by the staff at Tabor Home, whom the family sincerely thanks for the kind and compassionate care shown to Elsie during her time with them, especially her final days.

LEMAY Annie Marie Joseé July 26, 1962 ~ May 9, 2014 Annie passed away peacefully after a short and valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving family, mother Margo, brother Steve (Anndraya Luui), sisters Marlene and Carolle (Dave Lind), nieces Laine, Janel, Raeleen, nephew Mack and her sweet dog Gizmo. Annie was predeceased by her father Art in 2007. Annie was born in Chapais, Quebec. The family moved to the United States, then Africa and eventually returned to Canada, resting in Mission in 1976. Annie was an extremely talented photographer. She will live on in the hearts of those who love her and in her beautiful photos. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital Cancer Centre for their care and compassion. Yvonne loved to garden and especially loved her flower and vegetable garden. Yvonne was an RN with Riverview Hospital and Maple Ridge Hospital. She loved animals and especially loved her pug Cosmo. MINTY William Alexander 1920 ~ 2014 William Alexander (Bill) Minty passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 2014 at his home in Red Deer, Alberta. He had just celebrated his 94th birthday. Bill, a long time resident of Abbotsford, BC, spent his last few years in Red Deer, AB where he could be closer to his children. While in Abbotsford, Bill was active in the old time country music scene, playing his button accordion or the drums at dances, concerts, competitions and seniors lodges. He and his music will be greatly missed until we meet again. Bill is survived by his son Ken (Denelda) Minty of Cold Lake, AB; daughters Jane (Bart) Jensen of Red Deer, AB and Sydna (Jean) Ascione of Raymond, AB as well as 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. At Bill’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Bower Chapel), 3002 - 47 Ave., Red Deer, AB on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 2:00 pm. SIEMENS Allan Hugo God Is Good Dad’s theme he would say in good and bad times) Allan was born to John and Helen Siemens in Hepburn, Saskatchewan on November 12, 1929. He passed peacefully into the presence of His Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and reunited with his beloved wife Maxine on May 8, 2014. Allan was predeceased by his wife Maxine in 2008. He is survived by his brother Milton (Anne) Siemens, sister-in-law Gae, Shirley (Lorne), brotherin-law Gaston. Allan is also survived by his daughter Joan (Jeff) Thompson and sons Roger (Gail) Siemens, Randall (Jennifer) Siemens, Richard (Arlene) Siemens, Doug (Lana) Siemens, Mitchell (Pamela) Siemens as well as a full quiver of 57 grand and great grand kids. God is good. Allan met his beloved wife Maxine at Cultus Lake on June 10, 1949 and was married on March 10, 1950. Over the next 12 years their family grew with the addition of their 6 children. God is good. Allan progressed into the sales office, foreman, superintendent, manager and then General Manager, during his career within the Sawmill industry. Allan was a self made man who worked hard and had a very successful career. Allan accepted the Lord into his life as a child and then made a recommitment to the Lord while they were living in The Pas, Manitoba in 1972. He also had a heart of service and volunteered with the cancer agency and assisted many shut ins by running errands for them. God is good. Allan will be greatly missed here on earth but we are so filled with joy that Dad could finally go home to be with his beloved Maxine and to be in the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This is what he longed for over the last 6 years since Mom went Home. God Is Good! The family would like to thanks the staff at Menno Terrace East and Maplewood for the great care they extended to our dad. A celebration of his life will be on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 11 am at Clearbrook MB Church at 2719 Clearbrook Rd. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Clearbrook MB Church.

STEVENSON, Marion (nee Todd) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother and sister Marion Stevenson on May 8th 2014 at the age of 74. Marion is survived by her four children; Lesley Heyninck, Jackie McSween, Russell Blair and Natalie Blair, 9 grandchildren and three brothers Ronnie, Robin and David from Scotland. Marion was born on July 20, 1939 in Maddiston, Scotland, immigrated to Ontario in 1968 and moved to British Columbia in 2004. Marion will be missed dearly by her family and her Mission community of friends.
