Fresh air, crafts, music and art make for a magical Mother’s Day at Royal Roads University. The annual Mother’s Day Paint In and Craft Fair kicks off at 10 a.m. Sunday (May 11) with a full day of events planned at the perennially popular event. The day will feature local artisans displaying hand sculpted and painted glass art, organic seasonings, fudge, jewelry, garden stepping stones, home-grown plants and more. Community leaders will share information on Colwood’s heritage and community initiatives, along with offering Power Smart conservation tips and interactive activities. An art show and sale also happens at the event, organized by the West Shore Arts Council and featuring works from local artists. The show will be held in the Quarterdeck on the second floor of the Grant Building. On the main stage music will be performed all day, starting with the Belmont R&B band at 10 a.m. Other featured acts are Mike Lefebvre and Perros Libres, Terry Brennan and the West Shore Community Concert Band. Children’s activities are also a part of the fun, with a visit from Tickles the Clown, Daisy and Farmer Vicki, and Twiggly Wiggly the Magic Clown. The day also features free admission to Hatley Castle and gardens, along with 30-minute castle tours offered on the hour, every hour. were a little rough, but then we started getting into it.” The students in this group decided to give 75 per cent of their profits to the Langford family of Zach Downey, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. “I learned a lot about marketing and just overall trial and error, teaching yourself

Great teachers have an impact: students Evidence of Great Teachers seen in stores

Harmen Berghuis, general manager for the Staples School Tools program, says store staff who work with students and families get a sense of how teachers think outside the box when it comes to assignments. What sticks out in his mind are the science fair or heritage day projects on which students aim to reach a little higher. “What we see, especially on the projects that are done by a couple of students or a team of students, is that teachers build into the assignment the ability for co-operation and collaboration, even a bit of leadership, perhaps,” he says.

Teachers who have a special way of getting their points across that make us feel good or look at things differently do so through personal connections. So who better to ask what makes a great grade school teacher than students who are living that experience daily? In continuing our look at outstanding educators, part of Black Press and Staples’ Great Teachers initiative, supported by Thrifty Foods, we heard from some well-spoken middle and high school students around the region. We hope the teachers on their St. Laurent list of favourites, those who are really making a difference, will be nominated for Great Teachers awards at vicnews.com/ contests. Direct involvement with students strikes a chord with some. Grade 9 Spencer middle school student Daniel St. Laurent lit up when talking about a shop teacher who builds things and puts them up around the school. “I help him with some of his projects,” Daniel says. “(He also) helps people step out of their comfort zones and try different things.” Mixing things up keeps

things interesting, he adds. “One of my teachers teaches in three different ways. One day he’ll do it through video, another day it’ll be using worksheets and the next it’s talking lessons, having discussions.” Personal connections allow teachers to make more in headway with individuals who may be having troubles in the classroom, says Spectrum’ Grade 11 Dezy Manuel. “The best teachers go into a class where Manuel everyone is struggling and they make them better. They get people passionate about the subject and use that to their advantage,” she says. “I love teachers who can relate to a student. If they can’t relate (to their teacher) they’re not going to have that (same level of) interest in the subject.” Adds Sophie Adams, in Grade 11 at Edward Milne

Community School in Sooke: “To me a great teacher is someone who doesn’t consider themselves a teacher, but a mentor, and a mentor is someone who is passionate about what they’re Adams teaching and develops great relationships with students.” Knowing more about individuals, such as whether they work a part-time job outside school and have a lot on their plate, is important, she says. Grade 9 Vic High student Avery Paul, who spent a yeara n d - a - h a l f Paul being home schooled, is big on relationships, especially given the way she learns. “I like to work at my own pace, I have my own specific learning style. I’m really visual and like to work with my

hands. I like when a teacher allows me to be flexible with my learning style. That shows they care about their students.” Manuel, who serves as a teacher’s assistant in a learning strategies class, adds that excellent educators have something else that differentiates them from others. “They’re usually not just a great teacher, they’re usually just a really great person and they’re positive role models.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

ICBC has designed a test it hopes participants will fail. The “walking and texting” obstacle course, offered to visitors at tomorrow’s (May 10) West Shore RCMP open house, aims to show people how difficult it is to text while performing seemingly simple tasks, such as walking around a few cones. The idea is, if you can’t walk and text, should you try to drive and text? The course is one of many learning experiences available to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the detachment, 698 Atkins Ave. in Langford. The event is an invitation to investigate all the West Shore RCMP does in the community. “We feel it’s really important to share with the community what we’re made of, all of the specialty sections that we have, all of the partners that we have,” detachment spokesperson Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz said. “We like to be able to showcase to the public what we do, give them a chance to really come out and meet and connect with us.” New this year is the participation of the Vancouverbased bomb disposal unit, which will have equipment on display and members on hand to answer questions. Also in attendance will be members of the RCMP’s tactical response team, which deals primarily with riot-type situations, and the emergency response team, the RCMP equivalent of a SWAT team. “Most people, when they think of policing, think of the person in the car that when you call 911, that’s the person that shows up,” Rochlitz said. “They don’t realize what really makes us a whole detachment and a whole policing community.” RCMP forensic identification officers will be there to answer questions and talk about real-life police work versus what people see on CSI, she said. West Shore RCMP police dog Tito will show off his evidencefinding skills and

Let’s hope MLA sticks around Now that John Horgan has been confirmed as the new leader of the B.C. NDP, the questions can begin about how often Jane and Joe Average constituent will find him spending time in the Juan de Fuca riding. As a member of the official Opposition, Horgan’s schedule might seem to be less demanding than if he were a minister with or leader of the governing party. But most good Opposition MLAs spend hours in committee meetings, tending to issues that affect their constituents and others around the province, in preparation for the day their party gets a chance to form government. The proof will come after six months or so, once he settles into the job and finds his political feet. When Victoria’s Carole James was leader of the B.C. NDP, she occasionally managed to find time to meet with people in her riding. Of course that was no stretch, since the legislature is located there. When the legislature is sitting, Horgan will have to make a special trip to come out to the West Shore. We hope that regular visits here, at the very least to his constituency office, will be a part of his routine. Otherwise, having our MLA as leader of the party may not be any advantage at all.

How prepared are you? As we coast into the final days of Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada, it’s a good time to ask how prepared we really are. Are you prepared for not just a devastating act of God such as an earthquake or tsunami, but more localized incidents such as fires or a serious car crash? You may have your three-day emergency pack stocked up, but how are the tires on your main vehicle? Safe enough to carry you and your family a modest distance? And do you carry house or tenant insurance to cover your belongings in case you or someone else starts a fire in your home? Just remember, they’re all emergencies.

Rodeo not preferred entertainment May is here, the weather is warming up and all sorts of wonderful spring events are occurring to entertain Greater Victoria citizens. Unfortunately there is still one event, while described as entertainment, consisting of inhumane treatment of animals. The Luxton Pro Rodeo is scheduled for the May long weekend in Langford. Since 2012, Victoria Citizens Against Rodeo Events, the Vancouver Humane Society and the B.C. SPCA have all requested that changes be made at this annual event either by the rodeo organizers or the City of Langford. To date these requests have largely been ignored. Animals are caused significant fear and anxiety during rodeo events and the risk of lifeending injuries is substantial, as demonstrated at rodeos across North America every year. The only reason these events are allowed to continue is that the animals used are classified as ‘livestock’ and therefore exempt from provincial animal cruelty laws. This classification effectively restricts the B.C. SPCA from acting and leaves the responsibility to enact a bylaw eliminating the events squarely with the mayor and council of Langford. Mining decision a head-scratcher Please add me to the list of people who feel Taseko’s New Prosperity mine got a raw deal from the federal government. It makes me want to shake my head. They seem to forget that virtually every dollar created in British Columbia starts with the extraction of natural resources such as gold and copper. The feds also seem to forget that B.C.’s Pacific Rim economy lifts and carries a huge, and often disproportionate, share of the entire country’s economy. Perhaps Stephen Harper and his Conservatives should spend more time in places like Williams Lake, Prince George, Quesnel and the Cariboo-Chilcotin to see where the Canadian economy really starts. Then we bypassed Kelowna and headed for Beaverdell, admiring the evidence of the now defunct historic Kettle Valley railway. Then the chilling hail hit but a single glass of beer at Rock Creek restored us us. The winding back road trail to Princeton was a joy but the last stretch home was not. First, we were hit by snow, then hail that numbed our faces as we descended from Manning Park. Of course, it could have been the hole in the left side of my helmet. There was one other little challenge. The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in an accident and had all original parts. I left thinking the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might have the bike’s history on hand. It never hurts to double check. The myth of displacements Many new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader

write me asking what he should get. He’s 6-foot-two-inches tall and 220 pounds with long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. He wanted something manageable for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t going to fit him. Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Davidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Suzuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher displacement but they’re going to be work better with his body. I recommend buying a bike you are comfortable on. Test rides Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend the extra $100 to $200 to have a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting onto. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

You’ve got your licence and proper gear, now all you need is a motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Budget Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing when it comes to your new ride. Particularly if you’re buying used. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike happens to be a nightmare and costs a fortune on repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. New or used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warranties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget. Private sale or from a dealership? Buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike online. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VIN It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail

The Audi A7 a luxury fuel sipper Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the mainstream Volkswagen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI engines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing right. The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25 to 30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look for. Looks The body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, in combination

swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for full-sized adult passengers. The reality is that many professionals who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best materials are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market.

Drive Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that

power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go. Verdict The Audi A7 is a lovely car filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige that all come at a price. Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several years of driving thanks to the improved fuel

During a recent short stay in Los Angeles, I drove a Mazda3i Grand Touring. It’s a trim level not available in Canada, even though Mazda3 is more

Danica, on the other hand, Lundy was bright and clean, with combed curly locks and little laces tied on perfect white shoes. Danica was nicely dressed in those days, but not in the way I had envisioned. I sort of thought that since I liked denim, I’d dress my kids in little denim pants, little jean shirts and jackets. Anything else would be yellow, green or blue. At all costs, I would avoid pink, and I would never, ever purchase a frilly dress. Then, as I wheeled Danica down a bumpy road in a stroller one day, someone asked the heart-ripping question: “How old is he?” He! So out came the pink sleepers. For some reason, I’ve been thinking about the “baby years.” Maybe it’s all those puffy pink blossoms triggering memories of a time when everything seemed coloured in pretty pastels. Maybe it’s Facebook. I keep Susan seeing younger friends posting baby pictures and it reminds me that the world was once very, very small: about the size of my babies’ eyes. One of the burly, masculine men at our table said, “Try this.” He leaned toward Danica and started clucking. Soon we were all clucking. Then Danica swatted at Sandy, and I murmured offhandedly, “You’re supposed to honk when she touches your nose.” So Sandy honked. Then we all honked. Twenty odd years later, the world is a little bigger and things aren’t so pink (more like green, if I consider the flow of money from my wallet). Eleven-yearold Anastasia Bird enjoys all her Grade 5 subjects at Ecole Millstream elementary equally. She played on the school basketball team and will soon try out for track and field. She’s very busy with Girl Guides outside school and is a Sparks leader within that group. She loves to camp and has attended several regional Guides gatherings. She recently received a scholarship to St. Margaret’s, where she’ll attend school in Grade 6 this September.

That’s tough one. It’s a delicate balance between work and kids. Owning my own company takes up a lot of time. On the weekends, anytime we have together is family time. I would say going for walks and bike rides is pretty huge for us. We just recently started skateboarding as well. We really enjoy a big plate of nachos together. Going down to

the Causeway and watching the entertainers is also a fun one. We like to maximize our time together.

Dinner time. Coming home and having dinner with my family. Generally speaking, my husband will have dinner on the go. We sit down together and decide whether we’re going to have an adventure that night. I feel sometimes that we’re starting to live separate lives, so that coming together time is important. Also first thing in the morning, when the kids jump into bed and discussing what we’re going to do that day.

The seeds of literacy can be sown at any age. As such, many programs in Greater Victoria help parents give their children an early start on reading. Jan Dupuis, a literacy outreach co-ordinator in the Capital Region, helps various organizations and families connect and collaborate. The Greater Victoria Public Library and the READ Society, for example, host a range of programs for families. They target children of any age, Dupuis said, though many focus specifically on the five-and-under group. “Family literacy is focused on parents engaging with their children right from birth with literacy activities,” Dupuis said. Programs focus on reading, writing and numbers at early ages then move to learning with technology later on. Other pro-

grams also encourage singing and cooking together as families, along with other activities. “Literacy really involves those tasks that increase the levels of skill and confidence and selfesteem and really connect the family,” Dupuis said. The Parent-Child Mother Goose program offered at various library branches and community centres brings parents together with their young children to share stories and music. The READ Society hosts the Noisy Kids Reading Club, an after-school program offered through school districts that sees children who could benefit from extra literacy support learn through reading, theatre and educational games. Shantael Sleight is literacy outreach co-ordinator with Your Literacy Connection Westshore. “We’re always looking to get a better understanding on where the needs are, where the gaps

are and what is already in place in terms of improving literacy at any level, “ she said. Books for Breakfast sees families come together with facilitators to read books, sing songs and enjoy a snack, while parents learn effective literary skills to teach their children. Each family gets a new book at the end of each session. The Family Learning Tour, a one-day event in January, sees families learn about informal reading, such as labels and recipes, along with the value of play as a learning tool. Poul Marcus Poulsen Sept 21, 1952 - April 20, 2014

Poul Marcus Poulsen late of Langford BC passed away at Victoria Hospice on Sunday April 20, 2014. Born Sept 21, 1952 in Victoria BC, Poul was predeceased by his parents Knud and Gwyneth Poulsen, his nephew Brian Bone and brother-in-law Tony Mazerolle. He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Helen Mazerolle, Betty Nemeth, Shirley Bone, brother-in-law Larry Bone, numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends. Poul worked for Shop Easy in Colwood and retired from School District #62 as a custodian. During his lifetime Poul coached little league baseball and enjoyed many sports including running, cycling, golf, ďŹ shing and exploring the great outdoors. In accordance with his wishes there is no service and cremation has taken place. An informal gathering to celebrate Poulâ€™s life will be held at a private residence May 17: 12 to 2pm. PRIVATE INSURERS REACT TO CMHC’S REGULATION CHANGES Genworth – Canada’s largest private residential mortgage insurers, founded in 1995, has decided not to follow suit with CMHC’s product changes. Announced last Friday, Genworth will make one adjustment, however. The maximum number of units allowable under the vacation/secondary home program will be reduced from two units to one unit. There will no changes to the business for self program. Canada Guaranty – The private investor group Canada Guaranty, formed in 2010 when the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and National Mortgage Guaranty Holdings Inc. acquired AIG United Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company Canada, took the same tack as Genworth in light of CMHC’s management plan. Prospective home buyers in Victoria may have a difficult time sealing the deal at month’s end when the country’s national housing agency does away with two insurance products – a move that could spark repercussions across the buyers’ and rental markets alike. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada’s leading provider of mortgage loan insurance and mortgage-backed securities, on April 25 announced the discontinuation of its second home and self-employed without a third-party income validation products. After May 30, homeowners with one CMHC-insured mortgage will have to sell said property in order to become eligible for a second. Additionally, self-employed applicants must have two years of unaudited, independent thirdparty validation of their income, as opposed to stating income of year’s past to qualify. While the Crown Corporation claims just three per cent of their business came via such products in 2013 and has no comment on what effects the change may spark, at least one local mortgage planner is willing to venture an educated guess. Kam Brar, mortgage planner with Auxilium Mortgage Corporation in Colwood, puts forward a typical example of a young couple who has bought a new condo a few years ago when the Victoria market was at its peak. “Now you decide to go sell that condo, however, for whatever reason – let’s say it’s not worth

what you owe, or any other reasons – you can’t get out of it right now and you decide you just want to rent it and then buy the other property,” Brar says. Your choices: either sell it, or you live in it, or you find a 20 per cent down payment for the new purchase, to avoid CMHC. “If you’re not turning them into rentals, you’re either going to be living in it or selling. Most of these upgrades are usually condos,” Brar said. “That’s usually the stepping stone to the next property purchase. We’ll see what happens because they’re the feeder pool for the whole market. If you look at it as an eco-cycle. It starts with a small purchase and you move your way up gradually.” Should many potential landlords decide to stay in their condos now, at a time when Victoria has a fairly high number of new condominiums recently completed, Brar says, a lack of used inventory could be quite helpful to developers at this time. With the changes still a matter of weeks away, CMHC isn’t willing to venture a guess at the possible side effects of the change. “Basically we want to help Canadians meet their housing needs and our insurance business activities need to contribute to the stability of the housing markets and finance systems,” said Charles Sauriol, media relations for CMHC. “This is a business decision that we made and again, it’s just looking at our products and how they fit with our core objectives.” Brar, underlining his view that CMHC’s products were intended to enable first-time buyers, not future land barons, has his own hypotheses on the timing of the changes. “I think they are hearing from a lot of worldwide economists that the Canadian housing mar-
