aren Longman sat quietly in her Grade 5 class at Alberni Elementary School working intently on her project report. Longman assembled her project’s pieces: text, pictures and a video, then handed it in to teacher Luke McIvor. But this isn’t an ordinary school report—at least it’s not the kind or report that parents remember doing when they were in elementary school. Longman and 27 other students in McIvor’s class assembled their reports on computer tablets supplied by School District 70.
‘Right away, the kids were more engaged, more interactive and they had more fun learning this way.’
The class is part of a pilot project that integrates tablets into a classroom for teaching math, science, social studies and French. If successful, tablets could one day be introduced into all SD70 classrooms. “Most of the kids already have this kind of technology at home so it’s already a part of them,” McIvor said. “This is learning in the 21st century.” The initiative came about in September, SD70 Director of Instruction and IT, Jack Hitchings said. District officials wanted to know how technology such as tablets would work in a classroom setting. McIvor’s class was chosen, Hitchings said, because he was a dynamic teacher who believed in technology and
– Luke McIvor learning and was willing to work with the IT department. “A lot of people would like to have them but there’s only so many to be had.” The district bought 27 tablets with $10,000 from the Ministry of Education’s ‘Education Plan’ category which funds personalized learning and technology projects among others,

Hitchings said. Tablets were chosen instead of iPads because they’re more versatile and can integrate with both the school hardware and software network. “IPads are a more personal device than a hardware device and there are issues with running our programs on them,” Hitchings said. McIvor previously taught school curriculum using text books and photocopied sheets. But he observed several things. A lot of books were out of date. Some students didn’t want to read. Others read at an incongruent rate but hid it by looking at the same books other kids were reading. The tablets were integrated into McIvor’s class last November. He still uses
books and the dry erase board to teach lessons, but now he intersperses learning with tablets. “Right away, the kids were more engaged, more interactive and they had more fun learning this way,” McIvor said. At first, only enough tablets were supplied for half of the class so McIvor had his students group up for lessons. But the move took away from personalized learning. Kids had different ideas about how projects should be done or worked at different rates. When researching projects, gone is the old wooden cabinet with drawers of flashcards classified using the Dewey Decimal System.

Cop charged with assault

RCMP have recommended assault charges against one of their own officers following the handling of a prisoner at the Port Alberni RCMP detachment.
RCMP Cpl. Colin Banks faces one count of assault and appeared in Port Alberni Provincial Court for a first appearance on May 1, and RCMP press release noted. His next court appearance is on May 22.
The alleged incident occurred in the cell block of the Port Alberni Detachment on Nov. 8, 2013. An RCMP Code of Conduct investigation into the incident is also underway. Banks has been assigned to administrative duties.

There is a sense of urgency this year because the longer the team loses money the higher the risk is of insolvency, he said. “Are we in danger of losing the team? Potentially, yes,” he said. “We’re working out way out of that danger but we’re not there yet. We need to move faster.” The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society bought the team in 2012 for $600,000. The society joined the ranks of the Merritt Centennials, Prince George Spruce Kings,

The city is in danger of losing its Alberni Valley Bulldogs if the B.C. Hockey League team doesn’t improve its financial position this year, Bulldogs’ business manager Lucas Banton said. The team owes the city $46,000 in unpaid ice rental, and Port Alberni city councillors are considering a request to shave the team’s ice rental fees in half in advance of next hockey season. The plan will help the team balance its books, create
Trail Smoke Eaters and Powell River Kings as teams run under community ownership models. But the model hasn’t gained traction in Alberni yet. A viable financial plan was a key selling point with the BCHL when the PAJHS bought the team. A request to study the Bulldogs’ financial report was denied. “It’s not in the best interests of the team to disclose our financial position,” Banton said. “We’d be at a competitive disadvantage if teams we compete against know our finances intimately.”
According to the BCHL, teams, regardless of their ownership structure or situation, are not required to disclose financial statements. Under the BC Societies Act, only members of a society have the right to request and see financial reports, a Service BC official said. Banton said that the team has moved to reduce costs. The team is a year behind paying its ice fee payment to the city, he said. But it is requesting a 50 per cent reduction in the rate. “It’s too dangerous to lose money. It adds debt to the balance sheet and it’s too risky to have that.” The community

model has merit if it is given time to grow out, Banton said. “Societies can access grants that a private ownership can’t. And there is a deeper sense of connection to the community in large part because the team’s profits stay in the community,” he said. “But it’s important to keep this in perspective: businesses can take up to five years to
turn around. It’s only been two years here.” The PAJHS required the assent of the BCHL board of governors before it took possession of the team. When asked if the BCHL could order that a team be sold, BCHL communications spokesperson Brent Mutis said “the BCHL is directed by its board of governors, following regulations and bylaws which include ownership issues. However, these regulations and bylaws are private within the league.” Banton said he doesn’t foresee a scenario where a new owner comes in to take over the team—therefore, it’s make or break for the PAJHS. “It would take
three to five years to make a profit, or there would be huge support for something new,” Banton said. “A new owner may be reluctant to keep the team in the community.” The team has also grappled with the turnaround of business managers— three since 2012. But they might have found a keeper in Banton. The Alberni Valley School District will be moving in a new direction next year without its superintendent. Cam Pinkerton announced his retirement last Friday, effective June 30. Pinkerton will join School District 61 (Greater Victoria) as associate superintendent for next season. “It’s my cycle of personal growth,” he said. In his 14-year tenure with SD70, Pinkerton served as principal of Bamfield Community School, director of First Nations and Information Technology and for the past seven years as superintendent. The past two years have been challenging, with the district facing closures, he said. And

it’s time for him to move on. “For two years in a row I’ve made suggestions to the board for moving forward and they haven’t taken them,” he said. “Our budget will be balance this year but at the cost of a surplus,” he said. The next council, which will be voted on in November’s municipal
election, will have to contend with the aftereffects. “I’ve really enjoyed working with this board and there are a lot of things we’ve accomplished together. Perhaps a fresh set of eyes can look at (the district) with a new board.” “The district is grateful for Mr. Pinkerton’s years of service to the
students of SD70,” board chair Larry Ransom said via press release. “We wish him the best as he assumes his new responsibilities with the Greater Victoria School Board.” Trustees will meet shortly to discuss options in filling the vacancy created by Pinkerton’s impending departure, Ransom noted. Pinkerton will join SD61 as of July 1. He says he’s looking forward to the move. “The district team is a great team to work with by the looks of it. Some of our former employees are working down there that I have a lot of respect for,” he added. Although he is going to a larger city than Port Alberni, Pinkerton said it’s not as large as Toronto, where he came from before Port Alberni. “It’s a size I’m used to as well,” he said.

Haa-huu-payak Elementary School is set to offer Grade 7 starting this September. The school’s board of directors voted in April to reconfigure the school from the Kindergarten to Grade 6 to K–7. “We’ve already sent notification out to parents and we’ve advertised in local media that we’ll be offering Grade 7,” Haahuu-payak principal Gio Mussato said. The move is being done in advance of School District 70’s
expected move to reconfigure schools to a K-7 and 8-12 format. “It made sense to go to Grade 7 because if we didn’t then our students would have to transition twice in two years,” Mussato said. The move isn’t new. The school used to have a K-7 format but switched to a K-6 after SD70 closed several schools and reconfigured to a K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 format, Mussato said. Haa-huu-payak’s enrolment is estimated to go from 102 currently to approximately 120 with the new move, Mussato said.
“Our current crop of Grade 6’s have already indicated that they’re staying and we’ve had interest from other students,” he said. “We’ll be moving a teacher up and hiring another as well.” School officials are wrestling with the issue of space to accommodate the new Grade 7 class. The school is already maxed out in size and space. Converting the school’s computer lab is one possibility. “There’s a sliding partition but it’s not thick and doesn’t dampen the noise on the other side,” he said.
Officials will be discussing the space issue with the Tseshaht First Nation administration, Mussato said. The reconfiguration is a small step towards the ultimate goal of having a full K-12 aboriginal school, he said. Such a school would have to be comparable to mainstream schools in the district which is no small feat. “Nothing is impossible but this will require time, planning, resources, capital costs and a gradual implementation,” Mussato said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com
McEvay a Hometown Hero In the runup to the 2015 Canada Winter Games, a Pacific Western Brewing Community Foundation Hometown Heroes bursary worth $2,000 has been awarded to Alberni Valley coach and mentor Tom McEvay. The bursary was one of four granted Friday in ceremonies at the Terminal City Club in Vancouver headlined by four-time Olympic
medalist Denny Morrison. The other Hometown Heroes recipients included: Quesnel Paralympics hopeful Landon McGauley, Kelowna speed skater Nick Goplen and North Vancouver track star Andy White. Pacific Western Brewing (PWB) is an official sponsor of the 2015 Canada Winter Games and plans to award bursaries to 16
heroes in all. “Our 16 heroes will share a minimum of $32,000 representing a portion of PWB proceeds from the sale of our Cariboo Genuine Draft 20 packs. We started this program in 2002 and we have supported many young athletes and other community heroes whose extraordinary endeavours inspire us all,” PWB owner Kazuko Komatsu says.

A lawsuit may be at the centre of why dividends haven’t been paid to the city for its stake in the Upnit Power Corporation. Mayor John Douglas, who is the city’s representative on the Upnit board of directors, confirmed that damage to the facility’s cement flooring structure has been an ongoing issue. But he declined to provide details about the extent of the repairs, how much they’ll cost or what impact it could have. “It’s the subject of a legal proceeding
though so I can’t say more than that,” Douglas said. “You’re going to have to talk to Steven Tatoosh (Hupacasath Chief Councillor).” Tatoosh didn’t return phone calls by the News’s deadline. But court documents filed with the Supreme Court in Vancouver confirm that the Upnit Power Group is suing Pye Construction Ltd. for a breach. The action was filed in 2011. The matter of Upnit arose during city council’s April 28
meeting. An audience member asked about the micro hydro facility the city has a partnership in, whether the city is making money on it, and if it is true that no dividend payment has been made to the city. Douglas, who is the city’s representative on the board, didn’t speak to the matter during the meeting, deferring to city manager Ken Watson. Watson said that the city had a five per cent stake in the Upnit run-of-river project in China Creek. The Upnit webpage noted that the Hupacasath First Nation holds a 72 per cent stake; Synex Energy Resources Ltd. owns a 12 per cent share and the Ucluelet First Nation has a 10 per cent share.

The city paid no cash for its stake, and instead provided in-kind contributions such as data, access to the site and some grading work. The city received two dividends for its share in the project Watson said: a $5,000 dividend in 2007, and a $2,500 dividend in 2008. The money went into the city’s carbon reserve fund. But Watson confirmed that no dividend had been received lately. “We know they have an operating debt that they have to pay down so we weren’t expecting an annual dividend,” Watson said. In an interview with the News, Douglas said the Upnit board of directors met last week but the matter of the city’s dividends wasn’t discussed.
Road repairs will be conducted on Elizabeth Street compliments of the city’s land sale reserve fund. City councillors last month approved the transfer of $200,000 from the fund to accommodate the capital project. City engineer Guy Cicon plucked the Elizabeth Street project from the city’s five-year capital plan. “It was the first project slated to go so we just transferred it to 2014,” Cicon said. Work includes road surface repair and better drainage.

Instead, students log onto SD70’s digital classroom where they can access research sources such as Ebooks, Learn 360, TumbleBook Library, Historical Canada and Kid Search as well as a host of others. Students are more engaged with their learning, more excited and eager to share what they’ve learned. But McIvor noticed another benefit. Kids who read at a different rate used to grab the same books as other students to hide the fact that they read slower than others. “It got reluctant readers to read because with a tablet they can read at their own level without anyone noticing,” McIvor said. Alberni Elem. isn’t the only school that integrates computers into learning. There are other small projects at AW Neill Middle School, as well as Eighth Avenue and Gill Elementary Schools. An example of how the tablets are used with lessons is the project students did for social studies. McIvor had
students research the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Using their tablets, students gleaned information from the Internet and wrote about what they were, where they were and who works there. They chose pictures of the building to go with the report as well as a video. “They were better able to grasp the concept and bring the lesson to life through the tablets,” McIvor said. McIvor was careful to point out that the tablets aren’t for play. “Whether it’s pics, videos or games the lessons are all thoughtfully chosen,” he said. “They can play math or spelling games against other kids in class, or even against kids in other provinces.” Accessing the Bescherelle—or French book of verbs—is important to McIvor, who teaches French Immersion. “It has a tonne of resources available inside the tablet instead of bulky books,” he said. Using tablets connects students
with mainstream learning and makes learning personally relevant for students. Students can write on pages in a tablet but can’t in a book, and books cost money to replace. But using tablets isn’t without challenges, McIvor said. The tablets use Wi-Fi and there can be connection problems, or there can be issues with the SD70 network. And because it’s only a pilot project McIvor has to balance continuing use of traditional learning resources. But the tablets have made their mark. “It’s hard to pinpoint why but it’s just part of their world,” McIvor said. With two months left in the school year the project will be winding down to a close and will soon be assessed for its effectiveness. “Students aren’t learning differently so much as they are engaging with learning differently,” Hitchings said. “Based on what Luke says though we know that they can make a difference.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Police forced into social work There’s a reason why we call them first responders. Police, firefighters and paramedics are the first people called when we need help. It used to be for fires, car accidents or falling from a tree. But soon police, firefighters and paramedics are going to have to add ‘social worker’ to their job descriptions. Nanaimo’s top cop said statistics show a 22-per cent increase in the number of mental health calls for his officers since 2010. When they’re on the beat, police are often the ones contacting social service providers for people in need, checking on vulnerable people to ensure they’re safe, and diffusing dangerous situations. It’s a specialized skill set that used to fall to case workers. As the provincial government closes facilities for people with mental illness and reduces resources, case loads for social workers increase and people fall through the cracks. Where the police used to be the last call, now they’re often the first. Care for people with mental illness, brain injury or developmental disabilities is complex. With fewer doctors available to take new patients, those high-maintenance clients are left calling crisis lines and walkin clinics for stop-gap measures instead of a solution. Add in poverty, poor nutrition, barriers to housing and it doesn’t take long for someone barely getting by to suddenly end up in crisis. It takes a community to raise a child, but it also takes a community to ensure that our most vulnerable people are safe and cared for. That means access to food and nutrition, health care, adequate social services and affordable housing – not a jail cell. — Nanaimo News Bulletin

ICTORIA – The B.C. government has rolled out its ambitious overhaul of the public education system, from kindergarten to graduate school, much to the horror of its left-wing establishment. The formal title is B.C.’s Skills For Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering Education and Training. It’s designed to dovetail with the Harper regime’s Canada Job Grant that requires employers to co-sponsor training spaces so they will hire the students at the end. Elementary and middle school curriculum is being revised to increase emphasis on hands-on experience. High school and post-secondary skilled trades programs are getting more money, but it’s going to be shifted from under-performing programs that don’t lead to jobs.
Premier Christy Clark took another swipe at the bias of B.C.’s system before heading to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong on another liquefied natural gas sales trip. She noted that 20 per cent of B.C. students, and nearly half of aboriginal students, don’t finish high school. “Not only are there kids who don’t graduate, there are kids who graduate, go out and get one or two credentials before they finally find – Jessica their way into a skills training program,” said Clark, who had her own wander through university campuses before going into politics. A couple of weeks ago, Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter downplayed the “relatively small” skilled trades shortage for B.C. industry. “We should not be
engaged in a zero-sum kind of battle for dollars,” Petter protested. That’s exactly what he and other university executives are looking at, and it will be based on the latest graduate employment data and labour demand forecasts. One of the key architects of this sweeping plan is Jessica McDonald, who shook up the public service while serving as Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister. Her report on trades McDonald training confirms what Campbell’s critics in the labour movement have long said: the government’s 10-year experiment with the Industry Training Authority is a rudderless mess. “Certain partners, particularly organized labour, feel marginalized,” McDonald wrote. “Others, particularly

Over the recent past, several new directions have been introduced such as de-regulation of trades and modular training that have caused strain because they were not fully inclusive during development, were seen to benefit single interests, and they impacted the whole system.” The ITA board is being replaced, with union representation restored, and advisory councils from industrial employers will update their hiring needs. The B.C. Federation of Labour and the construction unions have all but abandoned the NDP after Adrian Dix’s disastrous pitch for urban anti-industry votes last year. B.C. Fed president Jim Sinclair was an early advocate for rescuing skilled trades from the second-class status they received in a culture fixated on university for two generations.

I have a couple of designs that I wish to produce here in the Alberni Valley. One is for the electric vehicle, and the other is for producing electrical power. Both of these designs will not pollute our environment. All the time since I moved here from Ontario, it has been made clear how important people take living here. How nice and clear everything is. But I am amazed that these same people who are so passionate about keeping it clear are doing the most damage. I notice how well these same people take care of their modes of transportation. I wonder how much they spend on auto maintenance in a year. I have designed a way of producing electrical power that is cheap and does little harm to the environment. I wrote to the engineer in charge of building the new dam on the Peace River and offered to sell the power to BC Hydro for $3 per mega watt minute. This new dam is expected

to cost taxpayers $8 billion today. The real cost will be closer to $14 billion. I have been part of this type of project before, and not one of the projects was ever completed for less than double the cost. That will mean the average family now paying $70 a month can expect to pay $210 per month for the same power when the dam is finished. And what will this mean for the 1,100 mega watts this is expected to produce for Fort St. John in northern B.C.? The families who are just getting by in the
private sector that haven’t had a raise in 10 years? I believe they will end up at the food banks more and more. I have done some cost projections for my design that can produce the same power as the project on the Peace River, for less then $75,000 per mega watt. I will be building just such a plant here in the Alberni Valley as part of the complex that I will be building to provide for my building needs with cheap power. This will be a large advantage over my competition.
I figure that I’ll need somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 mega watts of power all day, every day. Terry Short, Port Alberni

Ottawa designated Friday, May 9 as the National Day Of Honour Commemorating The End Of Canada’s Military Commitment In Afghanistan. Nobody should ever forget any of the allvolunteer Canadian Forces who fought in that godforsaken
hellhole, nor their families waiting anxiously at home. The monetary cost of the mission has been estimated as around $18-billion; there were 40,026 military personnel deployed, and at least 10,000 served more than once. One hundred and fiftyeight paid the ultimate sacrifice; 2,179 suffered physical wounds of varying degrees, including horrendous maiming; an estimated 8,000 developed or will develop mental health conditions, already resulting in far too many broken lives, broken homes, and suicides. While never forgetting those people, we have a right to question the end result of those years of war; so extremely costly to personnel, and to our nation’s coffers. So here’s the question: was it worth it? Will the schools that were installed still be thriving in a few years’ time, and will women have some kind of rights? Has much changed with this 21st century invasion? I suspect an Afghani Day of Honour would look different. Bernie Smith, Parksville

The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. Budget
Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing to outline when it comes to your new ride. If you’re buying used, this is particularly important. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike just happens to be a nightmare and costs you an unanticipated fortune on repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle.
Speaking from experience, buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike on Craigslist. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options.
Check the VIN through ICBC or a Trusted Database
It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail the damage. It’ll also show if there is money owing on the bike or if it was reported stolen. Keep in mind, if the bike is
from out of the country, the record likely won’t show. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might even have the bike’s history on hand for you. It never hurts to double check.
Test Rides
Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open to this, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets.
Mechanical Inspection
If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend an extra $100-$200 to get a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers

ave you ever considered where your food comes from? There are more than 300,000 food products available on the market. This can lead to a potentially confusing trip to the grocery store and may mean the frequent purchase of food that is not necessarily good for health. More and more foods are packaged and prepared in a way that has altered their nutritional content with added salt, fat and/or sugar, in addition to preservatives and other additives. The convenience of not having to prepare food from scratch may be what many people desire with their busy lives, or need, due to lack of basic food skills. This trend of having a multitude of options offers variety, but can also lead to cheap, excessive consumption of food products that may throw off the balance of healthy eating and lead to the development of chronic disease over the long term. Getting back to basics, buying real food more often and taking time for food preparation can be a good investment for you and your family’s health. Reading labels in the grocery store and looking at amounts for the daily value (D.V.) of sodium (salt), plus, checking for added sugars and amounts of saturated fat help to identify what’s in
the food item and can be an eye-opening experience. Have you looked at the label for a package of pepperoni sticks? Thirty five percent of your daily value of sodium, plus almost half of your daily amount of fat (44 per cent) in just one serving. In comparison, check out a bag of frozen vegetables, that generally offers no sodium or fat or added sugar. It’s beneficial to check the label and think before you buy. In addition, look for amounts of fibre, vitamins and minerals to help make healthier choices. Shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store will offer a way to buy ‘basics’ with a few key items in the aisles to add to your food staple inventory. While sitting down for a meal, look at a certain food product
(with label) and try to determine its origins and all of the processes that it went through to be on the table for you to eat. This exercise may help identify the series of steps involved with food alterations and raise awareness of its nutritional composition. These characteristics of its nutritional makeup can have an affect on health, if consumed too often as a regular habit. If available and accessible, choosing more locally grown, raised and harvested food is a good move for many reasons. Supporting local economies can be a more environmentally friendly and sustainable option. In addition, the foods bought in-season (for their growing phase) are generally picked closer to their ripened
phase, and hence have less processing for shelf-life and taste. Regularly visiting the local farmer’s market will offer an easy way to buy foods grown locally and in-season and can help enhance the likelihood of eating a variety of vegetables and fruits daily. Aim for one dark orange and one green vegetable per day to provide important nutrients for health. Join your local physician for the annual ‘Walk with your Doc’ event on Thursday, May 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Bob Dailey Stadium for a glimpse into the variety of local fitness groups, clubs and other activities that may enhance quality of life through exercise. James William Hall “Jim� passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, April 30, 2014, in his 92nd year with family by his side. Loving father of Sharon (Ron); Miller of Port Alberni and Heather (David) Stewart, Nanaimo. Predeceased by his wife June (06/23/1925 to 05/09/2005), his parents Raymond and Mary, sister Mary Shaw and granddaughter Becky Randall. Fondly remembered by Grandchildren Felicia and Andrea and great Grandchildren Christian, Brady, Tianna, Caylee, Caleb and Jessica.  Remembered with love by all the extended family and friends. Jim was born in Utica, NY and after the death of Jim’s Father ‘Raymond’, (1888/1936) his mother ‘MARY’ moved the family to Nanaimo. Jim completed school in Nanaimo, and worked in the Coastal Forest Industry before joining the 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII MB Dragoons in 1942. He served overseas in France, Belgium and Holland, before being returned to Canada to prepare for the push on the Pacific Front. After the war Jim returned to the forest industry in the Alberni Valley before re-enlisting in the RCAF in 1953 and working with Transport Squadron on Lancaster’s and other Radial Engines as an aero engine technician. With the introduction of turbines, Jim served as a MSEOP in Comox and Gypsonville MB. Jim retired from the RCAF in 1968 in Comox,  and after relocating to Nanaimo, worked with the BC Vocational Institute (Malaspina College) as a heavy equipment operator, where he retired in 1986. After enjoying family camping for many years, on arrival in Nanaimo, Jim bought a small boat so that he could enjoy the wonders of the Pacific West Coast with his growing extended family. He found ‘small’ was not big enough, and with each new boat he got a larger more comfortable model. He and June enjoyed many summers of retirement on the “June Lynn� and the “Skipper� cruising the waters of Georgia Strait and the Alberni Canal. No service by request. A family service, at a date to be determined, will be at the Nanaimo Heritage Cemetery, Townsite Rd., Nanaimo. Jim supported many charities over his lifetime, but those wishing to make a memorial donation in his name may do so by supporting the Nanaimo Child Development Center (mailto:info@nanaimocdc. com) or other charity of choice.

Poul Marcus Poulsen late of Langford BC passed away at Victoria Hospice on Sunday April 20, 2014. Born Sept 21, 1952 in Victoria BC, Poul was predeceased by his parents Knud and Gwyneth Poulsen, his nephew Brian Bone and brother-in-law Tony Mazerolle. He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Helen Mazerolle, Betty Nemeth, Shirley Bone, brother-in-law Larry Bone, numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends. Poul worked for Shop Easy in Colwood and retired from School District #62 as a custodian. During his lifetime Poul coached little league baseball and enjoyed many sports including running, cycling, golf, ďŹ shing and exploring the great outdoors. In accordance with his wishes there is no service and cremation has taken place. An informal gathering to celebrate Poul’s life will be held at a private residence May 17: 12 to 2pm. The Wagner twins tied for the Senior Male Most Outstanding Wrestler award at last week’s Alberni Wrestling Club awards night. The twins racked up other awards – 19 in total - top grade awards, senior honour roll, Knights of the Armada and recognition for provincial and national championship tournament placings. While the twins owned the podium this night other athletes also won awards. Nolan Badovinac won a leadership award along with Jorgan Wagner, and an educated wrestler scholarship. Badovinac also received the Senior Academics/Athletics

top junior female wrestler was Ally Flaro, who, along with Jace Clayton, was named top Grade 7 wrestler. The 2013-14 Rookie of The Year was Emma McGowan. And Clayton and Mackenzie Boudreau were named as the most improved junior wrestlers. Oliver Witham was named as top Grade 10 wrestler.
