Schalekamp said she progressed in the finance field in South Africa eventually in the position of Administrative Manager, managing a finance team for a large international mining company. She and her husband wanted to leave South Africa, she said, because of the violence and high crime rate and were looking for opportunities elsewhere. In 2007, her husband, a geologist, was transferred to a mine in Tumbler Ridge and his company moved them to the northeastern B.C. community. “It was a wonderful opportunity for us,” she said. She also said it’s important to involve them as much as possible. “I like involving my staff and sharing. I like uplifting people, training people. I’d like to share my knowledge,” she said. “I don’t want to be the only one who knows how to do certain things and I always try to involve other people so that there’s an awareness and a sharing of knowledge and a transfer of knowledge.” Fortunately, the 2014 budget has been completed, she said, to provide a detailed working document. As well, the 2013 audit will provide a good baseline of where things are at, which will help determine a plan going forward, she said. “My prime responsibility will be to make sure that the infrastructure that we have, we can maintain that properly. And then it will be for council, I would see for growth that might come down to borrowing if they want to do different projects.” I do believe in providing for a rainy day, most definitely, it has to be in one’s plan to make sure that you do have the reserves, especially with infrastructure that’s aging,” said Schalekamp. I believe it will be a combination of both.” Schalekamp and her husband have two children, one in Grade 10 and another in Grade 8. She said they will complete their education in Elkford until they’re both finished high school. In the meantime, she will commute to Elkford and possibly look for an apartment in Crowsnest Pass. Although Schalekamp has spent the last two years studying, she said her family enjoys “typical Canadian” activities such as camping and hiking. They love travelling, she added, and try to see as much of the country as they can.

Throughout the month of May, locals are speaking up about their experience with mental illness. By being vocal about their experience, hopefully conversations about mental illness will increase and therefore the silence and stigma associated with mental illness will diminish. Congratulations to all our 2014 graduates This Friday night, Crowsnest Pass celebrates another group of young people as they move into the next phase of their lives. Parents and other family members will proudly participate in the celebrations and support their young as they accept formal recognition of this milestone. For many, it’s a time of unabashed pride but one also tinged with sadness as they watch their kids take one step closer to independence. For graduates, it’s a time of hope and renewal. Opportunities abound, idealism runs high and time stretches out before them like a long country road. Many have plans for the future firmly in place while others will tentatively dip their toes into several ventures to try them on for size. Others stand at a crossroads questioning which direction to take. Joining the fray of advice, I’d say trust in yourself and pursue the path that brings you the most happiness. Cliché as it is, life is a journey and not always a straight path. Live your passions and don’t be afraid of making mistakes – they go a long way to bringing you knowledge about yourself and others that you will hold forever. We wish our graduates to live the lives that bring them happiness, and to find careers, friends and partners that bring them the richness and rewards of a life worth lived. Construction started last week on a new accommodation and restaurant development that will expand the existing business of Country Encounters and provide a unique experience for visitors. Owners Dawn and Mark Rigby said more accommodation is necessary for business growth. “There’s been a steady increase over the years,” said Dawn. “Last year we turned 97 people away from June to September.” The new building will double their current accommodation capacity, she said. As well, added Mark, even without the new building, they badly needed a parking lot. “We started talking about expanding about two years ago,” said Dawn. “We thought about expanding our current building or maybe buying a new one. Beer and wine will be offered but no hard liquor, she added. “I’m leaning heavily on Canadian wines,” said Dawn. “That’s not to say there won’t be some good French or Australian. But Canada has some very good wines now.” Dawn will act as Executive Chef, she said, and will find people to operate the restaurant. Built in 1904, their current building is the oldest commercial building in Coleman. According to Ian McKenzie with the Crowsnest Historical Society, the new building site had two retail shop buildings on it while the site on the corner (which will be the parking lot) was the site of the old Coleman Hotel. The hotel was built in 1904 as a threestorey wood structure with a front balcony and retail shops on the main floor. Like many hotels in the area, there were run-ins with the Alberta Provincial Police during prohibition for illegally selling liquor to Coleman residents. The balcony was removed in 1949, the last of the many balconies that once overhung main street Coleman. The Coleman Hotel was torn down in 1977.

The 26th Annual Lifestyle & Outdoor Adventure Show continued to earn its renown as one of the best trade shows in southwest Alberta. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers and the exhibitors with a special thanks to the student volunteers and John Taylor [of Livingstone Range School Division],” said Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce President Patrick Sager. “We look forward to next year’s show to be bigger and better than ever.” The events stage featured a wide variety of entertainment from the humorous handyman challenge to an informative acupuncture session. Electrician goes the extra voltage By Joni MacFarlane Editor Dedication, ambition and a passion for the trade are the driving forces behind Crowsnest Pass’s newest electrical company. Steve Schafer of Normera Power Solutions is a journeyman electrician who has been contracting for over 17 years and is now servicing residential, commercial and industrial clients in southern Alberta. After working in Lethbridge for many years, Schafer, who moved to the Pass over a year ago, has opened Normera Power and is excited to be contracting again. With experience in a diverse variety of avenues, Schafer said he’s worked on wastewater plants, farms and feedlots, as well as residential developments and schools. Normera Power Solutions opened in January and Schafer said it’s an exciting trade to be in because you get to do every-
thing from home automation systems to computer network cabling and fire alarm installations to lighting upgrades. “I love contracting and enjoy meeting new people and the challenge of the work,” he said. Although Schafer was born in Montana, he grew up in Fernie and lived in Lethbridge. With a cabin at Lee Lake and living in the Pass, he’s said he loves being back in the mountains. “I want to be the go-to guy,” said Schafer. “I’d like to be the electrical contractor people know and get to use. My goal is to stay in the mountains.” Having dual citizenship, Schafer said he’s also able to contract south of the border and hopes to grow the business to contract in the Whitefish area. As technology changes, he said, it’s important to keep up with the latest applications. This may include home automation systems with sensors for appliances, HVAC and security or ensuring plug-ins with built-in USB charging ports.
“A lot of people are looking for new ideas with technology, things that are simpler and more convenient,” he said. “It depends on the usage of the building but I’ll always look at these kinds of details.” Schafer also stressed the importance of keeping customers informed and uses online communication tools so they’re kept aware of the status of the job and he knows exactly what the customer wants. “I always do one step above what the other guy does. I’m a huge details guy and do whatever it takes,” he said. I can’t guarantee I’ll be the cheapest. But I can guarantee I’ll do a great job, I’ll show up when I say I will. I’ll do great work and do a bit more to do the best job possible... Location identified for recreation/culture complex By Joni MacFarlane Editor
Taking the long view, the Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society (CCRS), sometimes referred to as the Crowsnest CanDo, know their plans call for focus and commitment long into the future. President Tim Juhlin said the organization’s goal is to plan for the raising of funds, construction, maintenance and operation of a recreational complex. This complex may include an aquatic centre, indoor track, racquet ball courts, weight room, gymnasium, dance studio, live theatre facility and food services. To do this, he said, they continue to liaise with businesses and industry and work with the municipality to develop a management framework. “Right now we’re focused on creating awareness,” said Juhlin. “We have lots of support but others are unaware that we’re here… Our whole intent is to create awareness and meet with other groups.” On April 25, CCRS met with members of municipal council to present results from their preliminary site assessment for a multi-purpose recreation and cultural centre in the Pass. Juhlin said the organization recognized that choosing a location had the potential to be “divisive... and approached this task with concern and respect for each of the communities.” An assessment team was put together that used a process that identified locations and rated them according to a specific list of key needs and “wants”. The sites considered were the MDM ball field area, the Albert Stella Memorial Arena area including the ISS
fields, the former Crowsnest Centre site, the Natal Forest Products site in east Coleman, the area between Crowsnest Consolidated High School and the Sportsplex, Horace Allen School fields, and the old Coleman Collieries Mine site. Other sites were rejected based on the

“must” criteria that said the “complex must be located within 2,000 metres of the main streets and avenues of the five communities... and the land can have no liens or encumbrances”. Rejected areas included those near the Crowsnest Lake, the former Devon gas plant, sites east of Bellevue and the River Run properties. Criteria considered as “wants” included easy access for traffic flow, ample parking, nearby utilities services, ample size, minimal site preparation, options for green initiatives, minimal cost acquisition, aesthetically pleas-
ing location, and sites that link well with existing facilities. A rating system was applied to assign a relative weight of each “want”. “We assessed each option according to our wants with an explanation of each location and an overall rating,” said Juhlin. “It’s part art and part science.” A risk assessment was also applied to each location. For example, how traffic would flow in the event of a major snow storm. The preferred option was the area between the Crowsnest Consolidated High School and the Crowsnest Sportsplex in Coleman, ranking highest in the list of both needs and wants. Council was given a general package of information and a site survey that included plans with parking and a building site adjoining the Sportsplex. Juhlin said the meeting went well with all council members agreeing on the site review conclusion. The stage is now set for ongoing activity, he added. The next step for the organization is to meet with the Historical and Cultural Board and the Sport and Recreation Board to get their input. “If these committees agree with us then we will bring this back to council for the Hub to become a priority for council,” said Juhlin. “We’d like council to be engaged with the process and to see the economic value of a centre... It’s not just about getting a pool built, but trying to bring the community together.” Juhlin said the next wave of people to live in the Crowsnest Pass will move here because of the amenities and the culture provided. “Moving to the creation of a cultural and recreation centre for the area is a natural flow.”

Much has been written about substance abuse and although many myths continue to prevail, a more sophisticated understanding of addiction has emerged in the last two decades. Crowsnest Pass addictions counselor Loretta Schaufele, along with mental health therapists Robert Garnier and Betty Neil, provide outpatient counseling in the Crowsnest Pass, but are also available to assist getting clients into an appropriate treatment centre. First, stressed Schaufele, it’s important to recognize that are many different types of centres and treating addiction can’t be a onesize-fits all approach. If a client feels they can benefit from a treatment centre and are willing to go, therapists will work with them to find one that’s best for their needs. They will explain how that centre works, the programs available and
their specific approach to addiction. They will also work with clients to complete the application forms, write referral letters and get medical information completed by a physician, if required. “We assist with the paperwork and make it as seamless as possible for [clients],” said Garnier. “Sometimes we suggest going to a residential centre or you can just stay in the community. It all depends on what’s best for you and your goals. But we always go with what you want.” Often, a client must have a certain period of sobriety before going for treatment and in these cases, therapists will help with detox, said Schaufele. The duration of treatment varies from a few weeks to months and the wait process to get into a centre can be months. Centres are available for women only, women with children, men only, youth and seniors. Although all treatment centres address issues such
as depression and anxiety, clients with more prominent issues can be referred to appropriate facilities that are mental health based. In these cases, a mental health diagnosis is needed. Therapists also stressed that chronic substance abuse may have physiologically altered clients who’ve had a lifelong history of the abuse. In those cases, clients need to understand the effect it may have on them. As an analogy, diabetes isn’t cured – it’s managed, said Garnier. Clients can go to treatment centres themselves, said Schaufele, but the success rate is low. “With prior relationships set up, there are more supports set up,” she said. “The odds are generally more in your favour. And if you’re already connected to outpatient treatment, you can come for follow up.” A common myth about addiction and recovery is to look at treatment centres as a cure, Schaufele added. “Recovery is not treat-
ment. It’s only one small step… their addiction has to be managed,” she said. “Some clients have progress but usually relapse is part of recovery. It’s not uncommon to go more than twice.” Therapists agree that just because someone goes back for treatment, they’re not a failure. Research shows that the more someone tries to quit, the more likely they are to succeed. Therapists are also available to help people cope with loved ones who are dealing with addiction, said Garnier. Depending on what they want, therapists can help them set boundaries and stop enabling their loved one’s abuse. They also provide support for employees, business and industry through Employee Assistance Programs as well as give information to schools and community organizations. “We advocate for our clients to try and provide support for them,” said Schaufele. “Help is there if needed.”

This track meet took place at the University of Calgary on Saturday, April 26 and marked the conclusion of the indoor track and field season for Passtrak. Two athletes represented the club and they each contested two events in their particular age groups. Keely Anderson came oh-so-close to posting personal best times in both her races. The Forest Management Program within the South Saskatchewan Region is inviting applications from all qualified persons interested in registering as a Community Timber Manufacturer (mill owner) in the C5 Forest Management Unit subject to the following eligibility criteria: 1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age 2. A body corporate will be eligible only if the body corporate is in good standing with the Corporate Registry of Alberta Consumer Affairs. 3. Applicants must not be in default under the Forests Act, the Timber Management Regulation, or indebted to the crown. 4. Applicants must have resided within the Municipal District of Cardston, the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, the Municipal District of Ranchlands, or the Municipality of the Crowsnest Pass boundaries for at least the previous six (6) months. 5. The applicant must own an operating sawmill and provide proof of operations within the period of January 1, 2011 to March 31, 2014 (three years). 6. The applicant cannot hold a Forest Management Agreement or a Coniferous Timber Quota. Between April 23 and April 30, Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to 40 calls for service. They included: Mischief: 2 Thefts: 2 Impaired Driving: 1 Driving Complaints: 8 MV Collisions: 7 Suspicious Occurrences: 4 Assistance to General Public: 3 911 Calls (Invalid): 2 False Alarms: 3 Animal Calls: 4 Over the long haul On April 25, police received a complaint of theft of a U-haul trailer from the Frank Industrial Park. The theft occurred sometime over the past few days. It’s a family affair On April 24 at 2 p.m., police received a complaint from a Crowsnest Pass resident being threatened by a family member from northern Alberta. The incident was reported for information.
Firearms while impaired On April 24 at 8:30 p.m., police on patrol noticed a vehicle speeding on a gravel road near Highway 3A in Lundbreck. The vehicle was stopped and the driver showed signs of impairment. A rifle was noted in the back seat. Neither the driver nor the passenger were in possession of a valid firearm’s licence. The driver, a 28-year-old male from Lundreck, provided breath samples of 100 mgs per cent and was charged with impaired driving and possessing firearms without a valid licence. The rifle was seized and the vehicle was towed. He was released for court on June 17 in Pincher Creek.
Passing it On April 25 at 3:15 p.m., police received a complaint of a company vehicle passing on double solid lines on Highway 3 west of Coleman. The suspect vehicle was located and the driver was warned of his actions and that if applicable, the registered owner can be charged with the traffic offence.
Please mister postman On April 25 at 12:30 p.m., police received a complaint of mischief/damage to several post office boxes in Coleman over the past three weeks.
Road rage On April 25 at 9:30 p.m., police received a complaint from a driver on Highway 3 in the Bellevue/Hillcrest area that another vehicle refused to let him pass. The complainant flashed his high beams at him and the other vehicle stopped. The complainant passed him and the other vehicle then tailgated. Both vehicles stopped, both drivers got out and yelling and pushing ensued. Police located and stopped the suspect vehicle west of Coleman and the driver was warned. No charges were laid.
Long lost trailer A flatdeck trailer reported stolen from Coleman in 2008 was recovered in the Calgary area in April 2014. A suspect from Calgary has been identified and charges are pending.
Taxi driver On April 28 at 3:30 a.m., police received a complaint that occupants of a taxi were being unruly and uttering threats. The male suspects were dropped off in Bellevue.

As Olympian Clara Hughes cycles across Canada, she’s moves closer to her visit in the Crowsnest Pass. Currently making her way across the north from Yellowknife to Inuvik to Whitehorse, Clara rides into Crowsnest Pass on Wednesday, May 28 sharing her story to reach out and help others. As a national spokesperson for Bell Canada’s Let’s Talk Mental Health initiative, including Bell Let’s Talk Day, Clara has been sharing her past struggles with depression in an effort to promote awareness and break down the stigma associated with mental illness. Her journey spans 110 days and covers 12,000 kilometres through every province and territory. Residents are invited to help celebrate and promote awareness of mental wellness in our community. Help welcome Clara to the Pass at Gazebo Park on Main Street Blairmore at about 4:30 to 5 p.m. Afterwards, Pupus in the Pass is a fundraising event taking place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Curling Lounge in the Coleman Sportsplex. Come “pu-pu” the stigma of mental illness with Hawaiian appetizers, cash bar, auction items and VIP seating for Clara’s community address. Keynote speakers are Craig Heisinger, Assistant General Manager with the Winnipeg Jets and Jim Richards, Clara’s Big Ride Event Director. Tickets are $25, available at Scotiabank. Afterwards, the event moves downstairs to the curling rink area at 7:30 p.m. Local Community Champions for Mental Health will be recognized for their efforts and Clara will share her story with us. This event is free and is open to everyone. Hope to see you there!
