Petition aims to halt river crossing project
Group says it has enough signatures BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
Crossing the Columbia River near the south end of town by this time next year is a vision that will probably go up in smoke after a petition opposed to the pedestrian/pipe bridge has garnered enough signatures to grind the project to halt. According to one petitioner, 10 per cent of Trail electors, or 573 residents, have already signed the petition objecting to building a multi-million dollar crossing upstream from the Old Trail Bridge without a public referendum. That number of signatories is enough to put the project on hold, although the issue can be put to Trail voters during the upcoming civic election. “I think we are over our number already and we have lots of petitioners out there,” Norm Gabana told the Trail Times Sunday afternoon. “Ninety per cent of the people we are approaching are signing and today we have people of stature out there petitioning.” Gabana’s group has until 4 p.m. on Friday to present the signatures to the city hall and stop a $5 million loan authorization bylaw meant to fund the construction of a walking platform over a pipe bridge structure that would house a new regional sewer line. GUY BERTRAND PHOTO “The public is entitled to petition the city’s The West Coast Amusements fleet of trucks rolled into Trail on Monday and was greeted by a community still drenched from intent to adopt the bylaw,” said Mayor Dieter the weekend’s 20-millimetre downpour that had city crews out clearing clogged sewer lines on Monday. City missing out on Edible garden launch met with vandalism great opportunity, says councillor By Valerie Rossi Times Staff
FROM PAGE 1 “We have an opportunity here that will never come about again,” Cacchioni said. “The whole concept is to partner with a group (sewer partners) and provide something for the entire area and not just the City of Trail,” he continued. “To partner with another government agency and reduce overall cost and with no impact to the Trail taxpayer is a once in a lifetime opportunity and might now be a missed opportunity. The sewer committee has approved funding in 2014 to get a new utility line from one side of the river to the other, confirmed John McLean, chief administrative officer for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. “The City of Trail, who owns the bridge, has indicated to us that their engineers have recommended decommissioning the Old Bridge,” noted MacLean. “Hanging a line under the old bridge is not an option unless something changes. “The issue is not the line, it is the bridge it is hanging from.” Gabana, a former Trail councillor maintains the city hasn’t finished its homework on the Old Bridge’s rehabilitation possibilities or made the most cost effective decision about how to funnel untreated sewage across the Columbia River. He said after conferring with Redwood Engineering, a member of the Trail-based firm backed up his idea that a new sewer interceptor line can be re-routed from the Old Bridge to the new bridge and suspended across the river that way. The Old Bridge could be refurbished to become a walking bridge instead of building a new structure, according to Gabana. “It they can’t save the Old Bridge then they have to come up with another way to reroute the sewer line,” he added. Directional drilling, laying the pipe on the riverbed or the construction of a pipe bridge are all options with a plus and minus, said MacLean, adding that the pipe bridge will be discussed in detail at Tuesday’s sewer committee meeting. A report on the Old Trail Bridge completed by the city three years ago, summarizes a 2011 public consultation process that concluded the majority of survey respondents said “no” to a tax increase for the construction of a new bridge. Additionally, the report details a 2010 annual inspection of the bridge that found significant erosion and wear of the steel piers and struts that support the weight of the structure. Prior to closing the bridge, the city invested $935,000 over 10 years, and at least another $10 million is required for repairs that would only extend the bridge’s lifespan 10 to 15 years, according to the public report. Spending that much taxpayer money with no end result is not an option, explained Cacchioni. “We’ve been told by the primary bridge engineers that we could in fact redo the old bridge for $10 to $20 million dollars for maybe 10 years,” he said. “Who in their right mind on council or any kind of business man would invest a million a year for 10 years with no guarantee beyond that,” Cacchioni questioned. “I could never support it, you’d bankrupt the town.”
One downtown Trail business owner is remaining optimistic on an edible garden project following vandalism to one of her planters that is set to bear free produce for passersby. Sabine Mann, owner of Women's Journey To Fitness on Spokane Street, thinks the Communities in Bloom Project needs more of an explanation. In the meantime she's crafted her own sign asking citizens to leave her edible planters to grow free vegetables for the picking. Now only beets, snap peas and radishes remain. “I came to work this morning and the planter itself was knocked over so all the seedlings that were coming up just a little bit were buried in the dirt so I salvaged what I could,” said Mann Monday.

Trail Times circulation manager Michelle Bedford has recycled old newspapers tubes into planters for herbs as well as used a broken Trail Times newspaper coin box to house everbearing strawberries. She is one of over 50 companies and services committed to nurturing edible gardens instead of seasonal flora in storefront planters this summer, which will be mapped out in a "Green Route" that will guide visitors through the downtown.
Although the incrEDIBLE green route is meant to draw foot traffic through the downtown by inviting people to take a walk and pick free-ofcharge produce from planters, the heart of the initiative remains around growing food and supporting local
food security and sustainability in the Silver City. Trail Times circulation manager Michelle Bedford has recycled old Nelson Daily News tubes into planters for herbs — including basil, rosemary, peppermint and sage — as well as a broken Trail
Times newspaper coin box to house everbearing strawberries and has transformed a broken West Kootenay Advertiser (WKA) box into a garden for radishes, royal red lettuce and nasturtiums (edible flowers). “I think it's awesome, I think it's a great idea,” she said Monday. “I just really hope that everybody watches out for them and they don't get vandalized.” She's keeping the “free” sign on the former WKA box to indicate that the produce is for the taking so long as people allow it time to grow without harm or theft. The "Explore Our IncrEDIBLE Trail" initiative took root this winter when Trail council granted representatives from Communities in Bloom and 32 downtown businesses to move ahead with their edible landscape idea.
School District 20
Balanced budget passes with little objection By Art Harrison Times Staff
The School District 20 (SD 20) Board of Trustees and senior staff gathered for a special open board meeting at the Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre Friday for the third and final reading of the 2014-2015 Budget Bylaw. In spite of the meeting being open to the public a grand total of one member of the public, a media representative, was on hand to observe the 20-minute, near unanimous vote, with only one trustee, alternate B.C. Public School Employers Association representative, Jen Carter, in opposition to the budget. The vote provides final approval of the close to $41 million budget for the coming school year, which the board and staff were able to balance after weeks of deliberation and consideration of a “long list” of potential cost savings necessary to eliminate over $860,000 of projected deficit.
SOLD
At the April 28 open board meeting where the bylaw had its first and second readings, trustees voiced the personal struggles they had experienced in trying to decide where cuts could be made with the least impact on students within the district. The finalized budget will see the reduction of teaching staff based on projected reduced student enrollment, the elimination of a position in the finance department, and the reduction of one trades position. “There will be four less teachers but those should be covered via retirements and those on temporary contracts (people whose job is already known to end at the end of June,)” Superintendent for Schools for SD 20, Greg Luterbach, said in an email. “There will be one less accountant through the loss of the SD 10 financial services contract, and one less electrician, which is occurring through natural attrition.”
Luterbach said the remainder of changes to staffing costs are to be achieved by the shifting of costing between various budget lines and some possible changes to staffing hours in some positions. Other savings were found in cutting supply costs and pursuing negotiations with the City of Trail to encourage them to pay a portion of the costs of maintaining the
Fieldhouse indoor athletic facility. “This year’s budget was a slightly easier process because it was developed by senior school district staff and they know the district and where cuts could be made without hurting the kids,” said trustee, Mark Wilson. “Previous years were way more complicated because schools were being closed and it became much more political.”
Summer preview in April
FROM PAGE 1 “A more active Pacific storm cycle resulted in far more frequent amounts of rain during the second half of the month,” he said. Thirteen of 16 days of measurable rain was recorded during this time, with the most significant downfall, almost 18 mm, recorded the evening of April 17. During the first two weeks of April, the region was sun soaked with near high record temperatures of 21 C recorded on April 7 and 22.6 recorded on April 8 compared to the alltime high temperature of 28 C recorded in 1980. No records were broken during the month, but a hint of summer shone through during the final two days, and brought the warmest day on April 30, and a temperature of almost 25 degrees.

A forensic audit allegedly found evidence that $315,650 was “misappropriated” between May 2010 and April 2013 through altered cheques, falsified receipts and records, plus cash transactions for referee payments and concession revenue. PMHA president Bruce Judd declined comment and referred questions to lawyer Erik Lund. The statement said Judd became suspicious after Elder died and called in a forensic auditor, but decided not to make the matter public until after the investigation. “Now that the investigation is complete, litigation is expected to commence against Ms. Elder’s estate,” Lund said in the statement, which noted the RCMP have also been alerted. “In cases such as these, it can be very difficult for victims to locate and execute on sufficient funds or assets. It is an unfortunate reality of the legal world that you can’t get blood from a stone ... At this point it is unclear how Elder has (allegedly) disposed of the funds.” Elder’s family couldn’t be reached for comment.

SCHMIDT, BETH WAVE – (February 10, 1926 – October 19, 2013) Family and Friends are invited to celebrate our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. The Celebration will take place on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 10:00am at Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services; 1298 Pine Avenue, Trail. *** BARRON (C.M.), JOHN PHILIP – December 20, 1939 - April 28, 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of John Barron share the news of his passing. John died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by Lowell, his loving wife of 47 years, his four daughters, Jennie (Erik Leslie) of Nelson, BC, Naomi (Troy Milleker) of Toronto, Julie (Michael Zaugg) of Edmonton, and Katie (Lee Waxberg) of Toronto, as well as his eight grandchildren – Quinn, Felix, Liam, Luna, Matilda, Clara, Lucy and Benji – who brought him such delight, even in his final months and days. Also lovingly remembered by dear brother Ken (Peggy) of Penticton, as well as many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, and friends. John was born in Kimberley and grew up in Trail, where he attended J.L. Crowe Secondary School. He played percussion in the school band and was an avid curler. He was also an accomplished pianist and golfer. He left Trail in 1958 to pursue a degree in music education at the University of Toronto, where he met and fell in love with Lowell. In 1970 he and his family moved to London, Ontario where he taught music and served as the music consultant for the Middlesex County Board of Education for 24 years. In 1976, John and his young family spent a year in Kecskemét, Hungary, where he studied the Kodály method of music education. He later devoted considerable energy adapting the Kodály method for use in Canadian schools. In 1985 he cofounded the Amabile Youth Singers, which grew into an organization of eight choirs that is recognized internationally for helping inspire a renaissance in choral singing, particularly among youth. He received numerous awards for his contributions to choral music, including the Order of Canada, and was proud to have been named to Trail’s Wall of Champions. Outside of music, John loved gardening, traveling, playing cribbage and golfing – especially with his old high school buddies from Trail with whom he was reunited some years ago. He had an impish sense of humour, an abiding interest in history, and a quiet but very sincere concern for those less fortunate. A memorial service will be held in Toronto on Saturday May 10. In lieu of flowers, donations to the John and Lowell Barron Amabile Choirs Endowment Fund (P.O. Box 201, London, Ontario, Canada N6A 4V8) would be gratefully appreciated. Online condolences may be left at www.turnerporter.ca/memorials.

All ages and abilities are welcome for a half hour walk to promote the importance of physical activity for better health and provide opportunity to chat with the doc outside the confines of four hospital walls. “The event is to encourage a healthy lifestyle,” said Lum during his regular lunch hour walk last week. “And an event like this creates doctors and patients interacting on a personal level while getting outside and getting some activity done.” Lum doesn’t practise in a “traditional” office, but after 14 years of administering to patients who access care through
the emergency ward in the regional hospital, the doctor has noted the role chronic diseases play in the lives of patients and their families. “These diseases have a dramatic impact on people’s lives so part of the walk is getting doctors and patients together in a healthy way,” he said. “And ‘Walk with your Doc’ can give a helping hand when sometimes during the course of a busy day we can make excuses or don’t find time for a healthy activity like walking.” Elsewhere in the region, Doctor Libby McCoid will host a walk in Fruitvale beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Beaver Valley Clinic, Doctor Ellen Smart’s Walk with
the Doc kicks off at 6 p.m. at Millenium Park in Castlegar and in Nelson, Doctor Lee MacKay will start the walk at 6 p.m. at the end of Lakeside Park. The four local practitioners are members of the Doctors from the
Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practise, which was developed as part of a 2008 province-wide initiative to pull community-based groups of doctors together to help improve health in the region.

‘Vocational school’ now back in style
T
he B.C. government has rolled out its ambitious overhaul of the public education system, from kindergarten to graduate school, much to the horror of its left-wing establishment. The formal title is B.C.’s Skills For Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering Education and Training. It’s designed to dovetail with the Harper regime’s Canada Job Grant that requires employers to cosponsor training spaces so they will hire the students at the end. Elementary and middle school curriculum is being revised to increase emphasis on hands-on experience. High school and post-secondary skilled trades programs are getting more money, but it’s going to be shifted from under-performing programs that don’t lead to jobs. Premier Christy Clark took another swipe at the bias of B.C.’s system before heading to Malaysia, Singapore and
Hong Kong on another liquefied natural gas sales trip. She noted that 20% of B.C. students, and nearly half of aboriginal students, don’t finish high school. “Not only are there kids who don’t graduate, there are kids who graduate, go out and get one or two credentials before they finally find their way into a skills training program,” said Clark, who had her own wander through university campuses before going into politics. A couple of weeks ago, Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter downplayed the “relatively small” skilled trades shortage for B.C. industry. “We should not be engaged in a zero-sum kind of battle for dollars,” Petter protested. That’s exactly what he and other university executives are looking at, and it will be based on the latest graduate employment data and labour demand forecasts. One of the key architects of this sweeping
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
plan is Jessica McDonald, who shook up the public service while serving as Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister. Her report on trades training confirms what Campbell’s critics in the labour movement have long said: the government’s 10-year experiment with the Industry Training Authority is a rudderless mess. “Certain partners, particularly organized labour, feel marginalized,” McDonald wrote. “Others, particularly employers and employers’ associations, do not feel
heard within the system. Over the recent past, several new directions have been introduced such as de-regulation of trades and modular training that have caused strain because they were not fully inclusive during development, were seen to benefit single interests, and they impacted the whole system.” The ITA board is being replaced, with union representation restored, and advisory councils from industrial employers will update their hiring needs. The B.C. Federation of Labour and the construction unions have all but abandoned the NDP after Adrian Dix’s disastrous pitch for urban anti-industry votes last year. B.C. Fed president Jim Sinclair was an early advocate for rescuing skilled trades from the second-class status they received in a culture fixated on university for two generations. That culture has created glaring problems.
There are too many institutions offering the same courses. As with health care, block funding is handed out without any serious effort to measure the results. For many students, university has become an extension of adolescence, finding one’s self through philosophy or film studies. Employers get their share of blame from McDonald. Not only did they chop up trades training to make it cheaper to obtain, their preferred source of skilled workers has been to poach from other employers who paid to train them. Skills-based employment data will be made public for students to make career choices. Finally, students coming out of high school will have a way to assess what they can expect after $50,000 or more is spent on higher education. It’s about time. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

ic measures will only benefit wealthy candidates. To democratize the federal political finance system, donation and loan limits should be lowered to about $100 to $200 annually (as Quebec did recently); all donations and gifts must be disclosed, and the per-vote annual funding system for parties should be restored to give them a democratic base of funding. Bill C-23 also doesn’t correct other current unfair and undemocratic flaws in the federal elections system. We need an honesty-inpolitics law to ensure political leaders can’t bait voters with false election promises. The federal election voting system should be changed to ensure the number of politicians each political party elects is based on the voter support it receives, and to allow voters to vote “none of the above” and also to actually fix election dates for every four years (unless a vote of non-confidence occurs earlier). Nomination races should be regulated to ensure party leaders can’t appoint or reject candidates (other than on grounds of character) and Elections Canada should be empowered to run these races. So while the Conservatives have proposed some key changes to the so-called Fair Elections Act, if they don’t do more it’s fair to say that voters across Canada will still be fairly concerned that the Conservatives aren’t playing fair, and that it will be fair game for voters not to give the Conservatives a fair shake when they vote in the next election. Duff Conacher is a founding director of Democracy Watch, Canada’s leading democratic reform organization.
Positive U.S. numbers bode well for Canada THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The Conference Board says shortterm indicators are pointing to a stronger spring for the Canadian economy. The Ottawa-based think-tank says its composite leading index rose by 0.4 per cent in March, equal to an upwardly revised leap in February, with the troubled exports sector appearing poised for a major bounce-back due to increased demand in the United States. The forward looking index comes on the same day as the U.S. reported its economy had created an above-consensus 288,000 jobs in April and that the unemployment rate dipped to 6.3 per cent.
The Bank of Canada has pointed to a U.S. recovery as a key factor to Canada’s economic health going forward on the basis that more activity south of the border will pump up demand for Canadian exports of lumber and other building materials, as well as manufactured products. Conference Board deputy chief economist Pedro Antunes cautions an element of the strong composite index reading is likely due to a onetime spurt following a quiet period in the early winter months due to unusually cold weather conditions. As well, he says Canada’s domestic economy is slowing, with both existing home sales and starts falling in recent months.

Benefits of new recycling program questioned

fixtures, batteries — I could go on,” Langdon said. “This is nothing new in terms of this model, but we’re by far the largest program.” Langdon said it’s also the program that’s had the most interaction with municipalities, because in most cases it involves the transition from local government-run programs to a provincial corporation programs. He said comparatively when the electronics recycling program came into being, there wasn’t a large scale program already in place like in this case. “It was really filling a gap, whereas this is much more a transition and enhancement of service that is right now is being fronted by municipal taxpayers,” he said. Langdon later admitted in the meeting: “We’re not calling it an enhancement of service in this regional district.” That was prompted by Invermere Director Gerry Taft, who was not convinced of the benefits of the program, noting there will only be two depots in
Cranbrook and one in Invermere for the East Kootenay. “To suggest that people from Spillimacheen or outside of Canal Flats are somehow going to drive to a municipality an hour away to bring their cardboard and recycling material and call that an enhancement of service is ridiculous,” Taft said, adding the current yellow bin system serves the 56,000 residents of the RDEK well. Area G Director Gerry Wilkie agreed. “We have an outstanding recycling program through the regional district and through the yellow bins,” Wilkie said. “In particular in the rural areas. And a whole generation have bought into it. If we lose that, that’s so highly retrogressive.” Mary Giuliano, City of Fernie director, wanted clarification about what’s expected for the newspaper industry in the program. “Our local newspaper (Fernie Free Press) has a concern with being designated that they are now

YEARS ~ 20
producers of paper,” Giuliano said. “They’ve approached our council with a letter wanting our support. We have not acted on it, however, I would like clarification of why you believe they think this program could be the end of the newspaper that has served Fernie for over 110 years.” Langdon said it’s not a decision by MMBC to classify newspapers as a producer, but a result of the provincial recycling regulations. He said newspapers representatives have not as yet joined MMBC, though he noted newspapers were a part back at the birth of MMBC back in 2011. The newspapers left in 2012 to explore other options. “They had until Nov. 19, 2012, to submit a stewardship plan,” he said. “They did not submit a stewardship plan. I am sympathetic to the plight of the newspaper industry in terms of their financial situation, but unfortunately it’s something that’s outside my purview.”. He said in Ontario for instance the municipal governments are subsidizing newspapers to the tune of $16 million a year. And similar things are happening in Manitoba as well. He said there hasn’t been any movement for something like that to happen in this province. MMBC’s board is
made up of paying members from a number of multinational corporations, including Tim Hortons, Loblaw, Walmart, Coca-Cola, Proctor and Gamble, and Unilever. Wayne Stetski, City of Cranbrook director and mayor, asked what suggestion Langdon would have to make things better. He replied the only thing he would have recommended is that MMBC should have more time. He said municipalities pressured the province to keep on the course, since delaying it an extra year would have meant missing out on MMBC funding for that year. He gave no indication which municipalities those were. “One of the challenges of the program, and I won’t undersell it, is that we’re trying to move forward in a standard model,”
he said. That adherence to a standard model was a source of frustration at the meeting. Director Taft asked why they can’t make an arrangement where MMBC works with the regional district to refine the current yellow bin system to meet the provincial requirements MMBC must adhere to. Mike Sosnowski, Area A director, furthered the line of thought, asking whether MMBC could buy sorted material from the RDEK if the current program adopted the provincial sorting requirements. “You seem like the perfect outlet,” Sosnowski said. “So if we give you the stuff, pay us. Does that model work? I don’t get it. We could do that, and save money on that, but your model’s not offering us that.”

Vernon set for RBC
By Times Staff The 2014 Royal Bank Cup roster was confirmed on the weekend, with the host Vernon Vipers as the lone B.C. representative. Seeking a berth in the RBC, the BCHL Champion Coquitlam Express opened the Western Canada Cup with two quick wins, then lost their captain and leading scorer Ryan Rosenthal to injury. They then went on an 0-3 skid including 5-3 losses to Dauphin and Spruce Grove to be eliminated from RBC contention in Dauphin, Man. last week. The Yorkton Terriers were the first team through to the RBC Cup after they beat Dauphin 5-4 Saturday night in the Western Canada Cup championship game. The Vipers, with Trail’s Dallas Calvin and Castlegar’s Ryan Renz in the line up, will open the national Junior A hockey tournament Saturday night at Kal Tire Place against the Eastern champion Carleton Place Canadiens of Ottawa. The Vipers – the first Vernon team to be swept in the BCHL finals in 19 tries – had a 15-day window to prepare for the RBC Cup following their loss to the Express in the league final. The Vipers have been given a mulligan with an automatic host bid into the RBC Cup. “We will refine every aspect and make sure our cardio is good to go,” coach Jason Williamson told the Vernon Morning Star. Former Pride Gym fighter Bisset shines at Hollywood Park By Jim Bailey
Times Sports Editor
Kootenay native Charles Aaron Bisset continues to dominate in the Muay Thai ring with a victory last week at a Mixed Martial Art event dubbed “Cali 4” at the Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old Bissett won a split decision over Manuel “the Sergeant” Morilla, a fighter from Dan Hendersen’s Team Quest, in the undercard at Hollywood’s historic venue. Bissett was thrown a curve when the fighter he was slated to face pulled out a week prior to the bout, but the fight remained on the card of the Romie Adanza vs Frank Gross main event, with Morilla stepping in. “I didn’t really know much about him,” said Bissett from L.A. “I had my coaches look into it. I knew he had heavy hands, kind of an unorthodox fighter, very wild, so I wasn’t really able to get in there.” However, the former Pride Gym fighter did enough to elude Morilla’s lethal right and left hooks, and maintain pressure with a series of heavy kicks from the outside.
“I almost knocked him out three times, like my head kicks were so spot on,” said Bisset. “He wasn’t a dirty fighter, but he was just very wild because he had a lot of MMA experience and whenever he came in he’d throw a big overhand left hook.” Bisset was able to elude the looping punches and survive the odd headbutt, growing charles bisset stronger and more confident as the fight wore on. “I was really happy with the performance. I knew he was a boxer, like a power puncher. My coach wanted me to kick his arms a lot, to take his power away. If you kick someone’s arms enough you can break their arms, so I just kicked his arms all night and landed a couple of beautiful knees to the face, and some really nice elbows.” The victory was even more impressive because the fight promoter didn’t tell Bisset he was facing a different opponent until the day before the bout, leaving Bisset and Dutch coach Antoni

Hardonk virtually no time to prepare. “I think I’m growing as a person, like getting a little more mature,” said Bisset. “A few years ago that would have really rocked me, but I stayed composed and it was a great experience.” The Retalick native balances an active life in Los Angeles. Between Muay Thai bouts, Bisset also teaches Mixed Martial Arts, and is making a go of it as an actor, studying acting, and appearing in a number of commercials and short features. “If I didn’t have it (fighting), I think I’d go nuts. You need that balance between the two, when one is kind of slow, the other one helps you out, but other times both are jam packed . . .and it’s kind of hectic.” Still, Bissett thrives off the busy schedule, and looks forward to his next bout in July. With the victory over Morilla, Bisset’s record goes to 18-4, and includes a National Muay Thai Canadian title, the North American Muay Thai cruiser weight championship, and the World Kickboxing Association’s cruiser weight title which he won in Medicine Hat last April against British and European champion David Wright.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Naya Rivera is still a Gleek. “There is no truth to the rumour Naya has been fired from the show,” the Fox Network noted in a statement released to The Associated Press Saturday night, which concluded, “She remains under contract to ‘Glee.”’ Rivera plays Santana Lopez, a lesbian glee club member, on the popular musical drama. Before “Glee” actress Lea Michele arrived Saturday morning at the premiere of her latest film, the animated “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” a publicist for Michele said her client would not comment on co-star Rivera, the subject of numerous rumours and reports over the last week. But Michele did reveal “Glee” had a fifthseason wrap gathering Friday night.

Box office
Strong start for ‘Spider-Man’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Spider-Man can still sling it at the box office. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” debuted with $92 million at the box office over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The rebooted franchise starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone isn’t performing quite as strongly as Sam Raimi’s trilogy with Tobey Maguire. Two of those films opened well above $100 million. Last week’s No. 1 film, the female revenge comedy “The Other Woman,” slid to second with a distant $14 million. The release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” essentially kicks off Hollywood’s summer season and its annual parade of sequels and spectacle.

don’t want to discuss this with him now and disturb his business appointments. My son has never had problems stealing as far as we know. He lives in L.A. and is financially secure. What is the best approach to this situation? Should I just pay the value of the ring to my sister? Should we wait until my son comes back and ask what happened? -Upset Mom in USA Dear Mom: Yes, please wait until your son comes back. You don’t seem 100-percent certain that he didn’t take the ring. And of course, it’s equally possible that
and eight siblings, called or visited me. The hospital is close to them, and part of the time I was there, it was a weekend, and they weren’t working. Was I expecting too much? Wouldn’t any decent person call to express concern for a hospitalized family member? It certainly changes how I feel about them. -- Sick at Heart Dear Sick: Of course your family members should have expressed their concern. But did they know? Sometimes, we assume people are aware that we are sick or hospitalized, but they don’t find out until you’ve been home for a week. Please call your parents and siblings. Ask why they seemed so indifferent to your situation. Let them know how much it hurt you. We hope things can be mended. Dear Annie: Your advice to “A Wife” regarding job applications was spot on, espe-
cially when you said, “Be sure to include a cover letter.” When I owned my own business, I would not consider an applicant’s resume without a cover letter. Only once did I disregard this rule and hired a person whose qualifications
were exactly what I was looking for. She quit a month later, saying she was bored. I should have known, because she was not motivated enough to write a cover letter in the first place. A few years later, she contacted me and asked for her job back.
I declined. -- Paco from Albany, N.Y. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast.net

your niece put the ring somewhere else, doesn’t recall doing so and believes your son took it. Things are misplaced all the time, and others are often blamed. Tell your sister you will speak to your son as soon as he returns and work it out. If you believe he is responsible for the ring, ask how much it would cost to replace it. If you think your son is innocent, you could offer to split the cost for the sake of family harmony. The price of the ring is less important than the relationship with your sister. Dear Annie: I was recently in the emergency room and then admitted to the critical care unit for three days in danger of bleeding out. I remained in the hospital for an additional three days. What hurts more than the illness is that not a single person from my family, including my parents

Dear Annie: My 32-year-old son is currently traveling overseas on business. He is staying at a hotel, but he visited my sister’s house to see his aunt and his grandma, who live near his place of business. My niece and her husband also came by to see my son. My son spent a few hours napping in my niece’s old bedroom and then left for the hotel. Two days later, my son got a call at 2 a.m. from his aunt asking whether he had found a ring in his bag, because her daughter said she left her ring on the makeup table in her old room. Mind you, she didn’t notice it was missing for two days. And while my son was in her room, he left his bag in the living room. So I guess my sister is accusing my son of stealing the ring. My son denied taking the ring and was very upset and angry. He is still overseas, and I
