A program offered through the Abbotsford school district is helping to prepare kids for kindergarten. Ready Set Learn (RSL), an early-learning initiative of the Ministry of Education, is offered at all 30 elementary schools in the district, as well as at Abbotsford Virtual School. This year’s program is open to children born in 2009 or 2010, and they attend with their parents for the one-hour session. The city of Abbotsford sought an injunction in late November to prohibit a homeless protest camp in Jubilee Park. lution for homeless people. The city issued notice in late November for the camp to be dismantled, citing safety violations noted by police and fire services and the contravention of city bylaws against camping in public parks. When the order was defied, the issue went to court, with the city seeking an injunction to prohibit the camp in Jubilee Park. City lawyers presented evi-

dence in B.C. Supreme Court that the campers were breaking city bylaws by lighting fires, using drugs and alcohol, littering and becoming involved in physical assaults. The judge said the camp was impacting public use of the park and this superseded the inconvenience of moving the campers. He also ordered the dismantling of a wooden structure used as a camp site that was erected by concerned citizens in a

city-owned parking lot next to Jubilee Park. The injunction issued in December related only to Jubilee Park. The city’s application to enforce a ban on overnight camping in all parks will be dealt with as part of a separate trial, a date for which has not been set. A teepee that was located in the camp was relocated to Gladys Avenue, where it has remained since January in defiance of a city eviction notice.

The removal of a homeless protest camp in Jubilee Park in December cost the city at least $60,000 – not including the legal costs which were withheld by the city – according to information obtained by The News through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. In the information obtained in the request, the city listed staff overtime costs to clear the site at $40,875, while contract services cost $15,049 and departmental supplies and miscellaneous expenses were $6,660. The city withheld the legal costs for the file, citing section 14 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, stating that the information is subject to solicitor-client privilege. The protest camp was established in October of last year, organized by members of the Abbotsford chapter of the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors, who originally said they would stay in the downtown park on McCallum Road for a few days. The group said they were gathered to raise awareness about the needs of the city’s marginalized residents and soon announced they would continue a peaceful protest until there was a housing so-

This was the scene of a crash on Vye Road in September 2012 that killed passenger Brian Patchett. for relatively minor injuries. Police at the time said alcohol and speed were suspected as factors in the crash. The group had been on their way home from a friend’s 22nd birthday party.

Patchett left behind a wife and two young children – a boy, who was four at the time, and a girl, who had just turned three – for whom a trust fund was set up. He had been working at an Abbotsford furni-

ture store, and was the family’s main bread winner. According to the provincial court database, Hamon was convicted of assault with a weapon in June 2012 and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation.

Businesses move towards organic compost program The city will continue consultation with the business sector on composting organic materials and report back to council in June. As Metro Vancouver moves to ban all compostables from the garbage by the end of 2015, it is expected the Fraser Valley will follow. The Chamber of Commerce sent a letter containing concerns that collecting compost could increase costs for businesses and advised the city to consider models from other communities. City data shows that some larger businesses saw savings for implementing a compost program.

Changes to parks and recreation subsidy Council approved changes to the parks, recreation and culture subsidy program to help make programs more accessible to those living on low incomes, while ending the possibility of those who are not in financial need of accessing the program. The subsidy will now allow those who qualify to access certain activities at no charge, instead of the current method of allotting an amount that may not cover the whole cost. The changes were implemented May 1. To qualify, applicants must be a low-income family or individual as determined by Statistics Canada Low Income Cut Off (LICO).

Business licence fees to increase City council has approved an increase to business licence fees, effective May 1. The majority of businesses will see a roughly eight per cent increase, while some will be subject to greater increases, including bingo halls, pawn shops, scrap metals dealers, and liquor establishments that do not currently follow Bar Watch standards.

Animal trainer sentenced for grow-op 1,600 pot plants found on Matsqui Prairie property in 2010 Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford exotic animal trainer has received an 18-month conditional sentence (house arrest) for a grow-op that was discovered on his property in April 2010. Gerry Therrien, 58, was sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack on Monday for production of a controlled substance. He was also ordered to pay restitution of about $11,400. He previously pleaded guilty to the offence, while charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and fraudulently consuming electricity or gas were stayed.

Therrien’s son Luc, 25, and another man, Houston Kyle Roach, 24, were also charged in the case, but all charges were stayed against them. Gerry Therrien is the owner/operator of Action Animals, which trains animals for TV, films, music videos, live performances and more, according to its website. His animals include tigers, bears, cougars, wolves and baboons. Abbotsford Police conducted a search of Therrien’s property on Matsqui Prairie in April 2010 and found 1,600 marijuana plants in the loft of an outbuilding.

Inmate dies at Fraser Valley Institution Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has announced the death of an inmate at Fraser Valley Institution, a women’s prison in Abbotsford. Katherine Anne Johnson, 66, died April 27 at the institutional hospital, although CSC did not release the

exact cause. Johnson had been serving a life sentence since Oct. 31, 2007 for the second-degree murder of her roommate Horace Stevens, 56. Stevens was found beaten to death with a baseball bat in his apartment in the 1200 block of East 11th

Avenue in Vancouver on Aug. 1, 2006. Johnson, who spent more than 30 years in the prison system, made headlines in 2009 when she filed an application in the Federal Court of Canada to have CSC approve and pay for her sex-change operation.

Johnson, who was born a male, also successfully fought to be transferred to a woman’s prison. As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and CSC will review the circumstances of the incident.

One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so. This fact blows another hole in the carefully crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems. That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C. coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen from space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas that comes up

with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline. Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government. B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years. In 2012 I participated in a B.C. forests ministry tour of facilities where hardy seedlings are grown for reforestation. Test plantings were also underway to see if the range of southern tree species is shifting northward due to climate change. During the bus ride, I asked the province’s top forest scientists if Campbell was right. The answer? We don’t have enough evidence to conclude that. As for shifting tree habitat, those decades-long

experiments are continuing. The scientists confirmed what I already knew, which is that the most recent bark beetle epidemic is the latest of many. It’s the largest “on record,” but the record goes back less than a century. In 2008 I interviewed Lorne Swanell on the occasion of his 100th birthday. A graduate of UBC’s school of forest engineering, Swanell began his career with the forests ministry in 1930. After a year as a ranger, he was assigned to the Kamloops region to help deal with a pine beetle epidemic. Conventional wisdom on the latest outbreak holds that it spread so far because of a lack of cold winters, attributed to human carbon emissions. I grew up in northern B.C., and my last two visits to the Peace country were both in January. In 2004 I recall changing planes on the tarmac of Prince George airport, moving briskly in the daytime temperature near -40 C. That night, and

subsequent nights, the mercury dropped to -50 C. In January 2013 I returned for some discussions on the Enbridge pipeline route, and experienced a relatively balmy -30 C in the daytime. So when I hear people talk about the end of cold winters in northern B.C. because of global warming, it’s difficult to square with personal experience. I can hear the rebuttals already. It takes long periods of extreme cold to kill the pine beetle. How long? Longer than those ones, of course. Similarly flexible theories are being advanced to explain the 17-year “pause” in Earth’s average surface temperature rise, the growing Antarctic ice sheet, and this past winter’s “polar vortex.” If anyone has substantial evidence that CO2 from human activity was the trigger mechanism for the latest beetle outbreak in B.C., I’d like to see it. APD did the right thing I just wanted to comment on a couple of articles that I read in the Abbotsford News this week. Firstly, your brilliantly written point of view in section “On Point” about the takedown of the knifewielding homeless man by the Abbotsford Police. As the warehouse manager of a distribution business on Gladys Avenue, and between two notorious homeless camps, I believe I’ve earned the right to speak on behalf of the citizens who work in this area. I first read the story by Vikki Hopes in last Thursday’s paper on the bean bag takedown, and the first thing that crossed my mind was how potentially dangerous and deadly this situation could have escalated to if the APD didn’t do what they did. The Abbotsford Police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t, and that is utterly unfair and ridiculous. The armchair experts, as I like to refer to them as well, have no right to bash the

APD in the disgraceful manner they do. I completely understand Ward Draper’s attempts to do the right thing, but give your head a shake. The homeless have mental issues and by simply offering Mr. Roberts a latte to defuse the situation is crazy. The food bank obviously felt threatened and unsafe and they did the absolute right thing. The APD have a job to do and this incident had all the potential of going very wrong and the APD handled it brilliantly. As for those armchair experts, they should try getting the complete story. Quit spouting off after only a tiny bit of information. Quit believing everything you read or see on the news or YouTube. Most of the stories when first aired on TV or published in the papers are rather one-sided until all the facts are brought to the surface. The APD are doing their job and keeping the citizens of Abbotsford safe. I loved the column and actually applauded after reading it. Most of

these armchair experts have never even been near the Gladys Avenue homeless camps. They would be horrified if they do. The people who think they are helping by stopping by and unloading couches, mattresses, tables, and whatever – guess what, everything is absolutely soaked, unusable, and rotting. It all sits in one of the several piles of garbage in both camps. Church donates sweaters to refugees Members of Abbotsford’s Trinity Lutheran Church helped support a national effort that saw 70,000 sweaters donated to Syrian refugees. The local church collected, sorted and boxed 107 sweaters for shipment to the Canadian Lutheran World Relief’s (CLWR) warehouse in Winnipeg recently. The boxes were shipped by Blackwood Home Hardware. The sweater drive was supported by congregations across Canada, and as a result, thousands of people in the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan will receive the clothing. The men, women and children in the camp have fled terrible violence in Syria, often with few personal possessions, and many are now living in temporary shelters without sufficient warm clothing, according to a CLWR press release. Families are receiving sweaters in bundles of five, in an assortment of sizes, which can be exchanged if one doesn’t fit.

er, with some granted intervenor status for the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline hearings which

are slated to start next January. According to Brian Kingman, the acting secretary treasur-

er for Collaborative Group of Landowners Affected by Pipelines (CGLAP), members must be property owners who will have the pipeline on their land.

Kingman said all the members’ properties are in the Agricultural Land Reserve and represent operations valued at “several millions of dollars of ag-

ricultural business.” “We think [the pipeline] is going to happen, but we think it should happen on our terms,” he said. Among the issues they plan to address

CGLAP is having a meeting May 6 for potential new members. People must live in the Fraser Valley and currently have the Trans Mountain pipeline right-of-way on their property, they are on title of that property, or have been given authority by the landowner to speak on their behalf. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at the Mt. Lehman Community Hall, located on the northeast corner of Taylor Road and Mt. Lehman Road. The $5.4-billion Kinder Morgan project would twin the 60-year-old oil pipeline that runs from northern Alberta to Burnaby, nearly tripling capacity to 890,000 barrels per day, and resulting in a five-fold jump in the number of oil tankers passing through Vancouver harbour. The second 1,150-kilometre line would carry mainly diluted bitumen for export to Asia.

The Abbotsford Arts Council’s next show, Transformation, begins May 2 at the Kariton Art Gallery (2387 Ware St.). Tr a n s f o r m a t i o n features a collection of acrylic paintings by Kristin Krimmel and a separate collection of woodwork by the Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild. Unusual for an artist, Krimmel became property manager with a large real estate organization to earn a living, but “the eyes of the artist never rest.” While managing projects, Krimmel kept finding imagery in the ground preparations or the earth-moving equipment such as bulldozers, excavators and cranes. She liked the macho power of their bold colours in an otherwise grey landscape. When she retired and had time to paint, she

wanted to celebrate these machines that alter our daily landscape. The Fraser Valley Woodturning Guild (FVWG), based in Abbotsford, is one of two woodturning guilds (and the oldest) in the Lower Mainland. The FVWG is also a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. The show runs from May 2 to 27, with an opening reception on Sunday, May 4 from 1 to 4 p.m., when the artists will be present. To conclude its 59th season, the Gloria Dei Chorale will perform selections from Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver! and other musicals at a concert in Abbotsford on Friday, May 9. The concert will feature soul/gospel singer Darlene Ketchum of Delta. Ketchum performs at various events, solo or accompanied by her husband, Kelvin, on piano. She is the associate director for the M a rc u s M o s e ly Chorale along with Bill Sample and Marcus Mosely, and a soloist for the chorale. Ketchum released her first solo soul/ gospel/R&B EP, Soul Connections, in November 2013. The Gloria Dei Chorale was founded in 1954. Comprising members from all over the Lower

Mainland, the choir sings a wide variety of serious and lighthearted works. Concerts frequently feature soloists and musicians from around the Lower Mainland. The 2013-2014 season was the choir’s first under new director Betty-Ann Vroom, as well as accomplished pianist Ingrid Verseveldt. The performance starts at 8 p.m. at Bakerview Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for students and free for kids 11 and under. They are available in Abbotsford at the House of James, Karl’s Dutch Meat Market, and King’s Music. The City of Abbotsford had announced on April 15 that they would pay $5.5 million to the Calgary Flames to buy out the last five years of a 10-year supply fee contract for their AHL affiliate to play in Abbotsford, and Glens Falls has been rumoured as the most likely destination for the team. The Heat have insisted that the franchise’s future isn’t a distraction, but in any event, they dropped their first two games of the playoffs at home – 2-1 in double-OT last Friday, and 7-2 on Saturday. In Game 3, the Griffins picked up where they left off, outshooting the Heat 14-7 in the opening frame. He said it’s the strongest the local senior B men’s box lacrosse team has ever been on paper in its history, which dates back to 2005 when the franchise moved from Surrey to Abbotsford. “Honestly, this team is better than the Ladner (Pioneers) team that won the 2004 President’s Cup,” Nishiyama said. “I was part of that team, and I thought it was the best team I’ve ever played on. But this team is far and above. It’s ridiculous, it really is.” Fueling Nishiyama’s optimism is the fact he’s got two terrific goalies – Matt Morehouse and Brandon Mulligan – in the fold, along with significant upgrades both on defence and up front. Influential newcomers on D include Craig Smith and Derek Murrell, while key snipers include last season’s top two scorers in Sean Kelly (27 goals and 29 assists in 12 games) and Jordan Hernandez (24 goals and 11 assists in nine games). Curt Callard, the Rebels’ leading scorer in 2012, is back after missing last season with a broken arm. Prompting the congregation of talent in Abbotsford is the fact that this year’s President’s Cup, the national senior B lacrosse championship, is being hosted by the Tri-City Bandits. The powerhouse Bandits have a guaranteed host berth, which leaves a spot for another B.C. team. Nishiyama firmly believes his squad, which lost to Ladner in the 2013 WCSLA semifinals, has the inside track on earning that President’s Cup berth. “I’ll be surprised if it’s not Tri-City and us in the league final,” he said. “Our upgrades are phenomenal.” The Rebels open the regular season at home tonight (May 2), when they host the Port Moody Thunder at 8 p.m. at MSA Arena.

Tennis academy established at Abbotsford Christian Andre du Toit and his son Charles, launches this Saturday, May 3, with an evaluation and registration event

at 10 a.m. at the Abby Christian Secondary tennis courts. “We believe that tennis education should start at the school level,” Charles du Toit explained. “That’s where you can expose kids to tennis, and out of the younger kids in the elementary school, you work them from there and build them up.” Andre du Toit ran a tennis academy involving over 1,000 kids in 50 schools in South Africa, before moving his family to Abbotsford in 2002. His kids – Charles, Trudie and Riaan – all attended Abby Christian, and were elite players at the provincial and national level. Riaan is currently playing professionally after NCAA stints at New Mexico and Central Florida universities. The du Toit academy differs from the many schoolbased academies that have popped up in Abbotsford in recent years, in that the program is not integrated into the curriculum for course credit. Rather, the school provides its outdoor courts to the academy, in exchange for the du Toits helping with tennis instruction in elementary and middle school phys ed classes. “They want to create exposure (to tennis) for families and kids, an opportunity for kids to be athletically involved in something after school and on the weekends,” explained Julius Siebenga, executive director of Abby Christian. “We’re all for supporting that.” The academy is open to the public – “age five to 60,” Andre says – with an emphasis on getting younger kids involved in the game. No, they don’t crash test the cars but they do examine how easy it is for children to buckle up. “Working with children on Take Your Child to Work Day is an excellent way for us to expand our pool of feedback,” said Don Shreves, GM Human Factors engineering group manager. “Our group and research is very data-driven,” he said. “Designing every element to a vehicle comes down to millimetres. While a door handle placement or seat switch might feel right to the designing engineer, we come in with data points from real consumer

feedback, including kids, to help determine the best location.” This year during the special day, the Usability team conducted a study looking at the Buick Enclave’s third-row safety belt buckles. The kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the safety belt

based on a five-point scale. A previous study dealt with a sickly problem that many of us have faced on trips with young offspring. Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an

accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.

Children help with GM car designs figured out how to place the screen outside of what they charmingly refer to as “the puke zone.” Shreves explains, sensitively: “We know through other scientific research that even if our eyes are focused on a fixed point – if we can see the outside passing by in the window – our brain is telling us that we are moving. “But if our eyes are at a downward angle and do not see the view outside the vehicle, our bodies become sensitive to motion and increase the chance of sickness.” The team’s goal was to

keep passenger’s eyes up and in a given spot. Determining that precise location required setting up a DVD screen on a track that could slide fore and aft along the roof of an Enclave. Researchers recorded the responses of more than 75 kids who were asked when the screen distance was too close and too far away. From there, the data was graphed and compiled to determine the best location. Long time resident of Clinton, BC. Survived by his wife Helene, daughters Sheryl (Wayne) Walch and Colleen (John) Engelhart, grandaughter, Krista, two grandsons, Morgan and Dustin of Clinton. The only son of Margaret and Albert Cade, Bud was born in Mission and attended school there. He was predeceased by two sisters, Jane Eburne and Laura Thomson and leaves seven sisters, Martha Munn, of Victoria, Dorothy Scudder and Juanita Thomson (Jack), Mission, Margaret Edge and Betty Bodnar, O.K. Falls, Susan (Don) Rose, Clinton and Irene (Cliff) Fisher, North Bend. A Remembrance Service will be held at Clinton Hall on May 3rd at 1:00 pm. Contact: 604-826-6412 or 826-2374.

Passed away after a wonderful life. Leaving her beloved husband Don, of more than 62 years, and her proudest achievement and legacy, her family. Joan was predeceased by her sister Barbara and brother Michael, and is survived by brothers David and Graham, her sister, Jane and sister-in-law Barbara who reside in England; her daughters, Joanne (Gordon) Veltkamp, Donna (Bob) Rolls; her four grandchildren, Barb, Don, Shanna and Erin; and her six great grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, Finn, Jacob, Mackenzie and Emma, with her seventh due in July. Joan was born in Leicester, England and met Don at a dance at the Aylestone Parish Hall in 1948. Don looked across the hall and seeing Joan said to his friend “that’s the one for me”. Joan and Don fulfilled a cherished dream in 1968 when the family immigrated to Vancouver. Joan loved the outdoors, camping, gardening, reading and traveling, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She leaves us with many treasured memories and we will be forever thankful for all the fine years she graced our lives. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Sunday June 8th, 1:00 pm, Langley Golf Centre, 21550 44th Ave., Langley.

Layla went to be with her Lord on April 29, 2014 at the age of 30 years. She is survived by her loving family: her soul mate Caleb MacArthur, her parents Derek and Cindy Locke, brother Justin (Racheal), niece Avery, her Gramma Helen Herman, and also by her lifelong best friend Stephanie Siemens and many relatives and good friends. Layla’s passions in life included fastpitch softball in sports, being a paramedic professionally, and spending time with her family and friends. She had a big smile and a personality that you instantly fell in love with. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, May 6th at 2:00 p.m. in Olivet Church, 2630 Langdon Street, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to the Canuck Place Hospice would be appreciated.

Jake is survived by his loving wife Katie, daughter Mandy (Colin), son Mike (Cindy), daughter Tammy (Raymond), sister Jessie (Nick), brother Cornie (Suzie), step children Randy (Marion) and Angela (Paul), grandchildren Sheri (Graham), Michele, Nicole, Jacob and Madeline, step grandchildren Daniel (Daisy), Kairee (Ben) and Kelsey and great step grandson Knox. Jake was born in Neuenburg, Ukraine on July 31, 1937 and immigrated to Canada in November 1948, eventually making his way to the Fraser Valley. Jake had a passion for sports including softball, hockey and fishing. He was also a tremendous handy-man and spent many hours in his workshop working on projects. After many years of service for the municipality of Matsqui/Abbotsford, he found a new love working at the MCC in Clearbrook. In keeping with Jakes’ wishes, there has been a small family service; we hope that you will share a kind thought in memory of Jake. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family who all loved him very much. In lieu of gifts or flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

It is with a profound sense of loss that we share the passing of Frances (Fran) L’Heureux, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. After an all too brief battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Fran passed peacefully on April 18th with her family by her side. She is survived by her daughters Charmaine (Wes), Nadine (Gerald), Nikki (Kevin), son Chuck (Darcy, Kristy, and Kathleen), and step-son Marc (Colette and family): grand-children Neil, Amanda, Braeden, Dustin, Aja, Kylee, Logan, Breanne, Elann, Sierra, Savannah, Cynthia and Makenzie: great-grandchildren Cassidy and Kai and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Helen Clarke, husbands, Marcel Dancoisne and Lloyd L’Heureux, son, Gary Dancoisne, sisters, Jean Steendahl and Leslie Carew, step-son Serge L’Heureux and grandson-in-law Robert Manning. Fran’s most cherished times were spent surrounded by family, whether it was picnics in the park, Sunday brunches or Christmas day. Her garden also held a sense of pride; she loved spending time nurturing its design and growth and then reaping the rewards of its peace and serenity. The community of Fort Langley had become her home away from home over the past 30 years, where she enjoyed the many lasting relationships she built there. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fort Langley Golf Course 9782 McKinnon Crescent Langley, BC on Saturday May 3rd, 2014 at 1:00 pm.
