Gold and silver for News team The Alberni Valley News was honoured with three awards at the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Awards gala at the River Rock Resort in Richmond last Saturday. Editor Susan Quinn was presented with a Silver Quill Award, given by the Canadian Community Newspapers Association to people who have served in community newspapers for 25 years or more. She is one of five recipients in B.C. this year. Quinn, a Langara Journalism graduate, began her journalism career in Richmond in 1987 and has worked in Alberta and B.C. for six different newspapers ranging from a daily to the weekly News. Reporter Wawmeesh G. Hamilton earned a silver for best feature photo in our circulation class for a picture he took of optometrist Shaun
Golemba of Valley Vision Optometry. Reporter Christopher Sun, who spent the summer with the News, won a gold award for investigative journalism for the series of stories he wrote exposing a $480,000 mistake in water taxi payments by School District 70. “I am so pleased to see our staff at the Alberni Valley News receive the recognition they deserve for the excellent work they do,” publisher Teresa Bird said. “We are fortunate to have an editor with as much experience in community news as we do in Susie Quinn. “That we continue to win awards on the provincial and national level confirms the Alberni Valley News is a strong community newspaper serving the community with quality journalism.”
The Alberni Valley Bulldogs want the city to reduce their ice rental fee by 50 per cent reduction to help the team balance its budget, business manager Lucas Banton said. Banton made the request at council’s April 29 meeting. Council will consider the request for its first meeting in May. According to Banton, the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society (PAJHS), which owns the team,
pays $55,000 per year for ice rental and wants it halved to $25,000 per year for the next two years. The team is also behind on paying its ice rental fees this year. City officials wouldn’t disclose the amount owed, saying the amount would be revealed before council’s next meeting in May. But sources close to the matter told the News that the amount is approximately $46,000. If council agrees to halving the team’s ice rental fee, the move would allow the team time
to cultivate corporate sponsorships to help make up the shortfall, Banton said. The PAJHS bought the team in 2012 from the Okanagan Hockey School, The See Group of Companies and Doctor David Ness. The PAJHS owns 100 per cent of the shares, and is operated by a sevenperson board of directors. The business side operates as a separate entity, Banton said. “This is a difficult business model to work in,” he said. “The rising costs of running a BCHL hockey team have risen
faster than the teams corporate sponsorships and ticket prices.” According to Banton, the team is dealing with a budget crunch. Earlier in the team’s presentation, PAJHS official Bob Cole said the new group was hobbled by the fact that it started with a larger shortfall than they thought. Cole didn’t disclose how much of a shortfall but said that “we were not aware of that when we started.” For its part, the team has pared its budget to the bone. Continued / A23

Merchants in South Port are going after graffiti. Businesses from the Uptown Merchants Association, Kingsway Crossing, Harbour Quay and Third Avenue have assembled four ‘graffiti busting’ kits comprising graffiti removing spray, gloves, safety goggles, brushes and an extendable pole for the brush. “We’ve put some of our own money into the graffiti busting kits,” said Kevin Wright, president of the Uptown Merchants Association. The move comes after the Coulson Group, which owns two buildings uptown that have been hit
repeatedly with graffiti, threatened to pull out of the neighbourhood if the problem wasn’t addressed. The idea is to attack graffiti within 24 hours of it showing up, Wright said. “If you get on it right away, it goes away (paint). We’re trying to do it in a non-toxic way,” he said. It also takes exposure away from the graffiti taggers. The kits will be available for any businesses to borrow, regardless of where they are located in the Alberni Valley. Property crime is up by 30 per cent over last year in Port Alberni, says RCMP Insp. Mack Richards. Richards told Port Alberni city councillors that thefts and breaks and enters were up in the Alberni Valley. The increase was attributable to a warmer winter that
average, 2014 is shaping up to be the second best year after 2013 when there were 814 thefts and 245 break and enters, Richards said. Highly visible patrols and vigilant curfew checks account for the bulk of the reduction. Relationship violence calls are down (27 to date in 2014) from this time last year, Richards said. But there’s
always the unknown. “The numbers don’t always tell the story because we know the actual number of incidents is underreported,” he said. The drop in the number of calls is due to establishing an officer that deals specifically with relationship violence, as well as people reporting relationship violence crime more often, he said.

We cannot forget safety Inconvenient truth of the pine beetle Industrial workers and emergency services personnel marked the 28th annual Day of Mourning on Monday with a service at the Steelworkers’ Hall in Port Alberni. Each year, it seems attendance is dropping at this event. It shouldn’t. Three decades on, it is more important than ever to remember the original message: to fight for the living and mourn for the dead. In 2013, 128 people died on the job in B.C. That’s 128 too many as far as the Port Alberni & District Labour Council and its members are concerned. Yet many members fear the message is becoming diluted. ‘We’ve had tremendous changes; but I see the changes slipping away,’ Unifor 686 representative Rick Lord said. ‘People are starting to forget. We can’t forget history.’ When Lord started working at the paper mill in 1969, there were 12 fatalities at the mill. Those remaining demanded safer working conditions. A new generation of young workers is being trained to take over at the paper mill and other mills in our community. They cannot comprehend the meaning behind the Day of Mourning, because big industry has cleaned up its act since the days when an average of three workers per year were killed on the job. The interests and attitudes in these young workers is challenging: they don’t understand why we pause every April 28 to remember. They are attached 24/7 to their attention-diverting electronic devices. They have never seen a paper machine suck up a colleague in the blink of an eye. It is up to us to ensure they are well educated in safety measures so that they never do.

ICTORIA – Last week’s column on Earth Day myths attracted a fair amount of criticism. One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so. This fact blows another hole in the carefully crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems. That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C. coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen
from space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas that comes up with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline. Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government. B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years. In 2012 I participated in a B.C. forests ministry tour of facilities where hardy seedlings are grown for reforestation. Test plantings were also underway to see if the range of southern tree species is shifting northward due to climate change. During the bus ride, I asked the province’s top forest scientists if Campbell was right. The answer? We don’t have enough evidence to conclude that. As for
shifting tree habitat, those decades-long experiments are continuing. The scientists confirmed what I already knew, which is that the most recent bark beetle epidemic is the latest of many. It’s the largest “on record,” but the record goes back less than a century. In 2008, I interviewed Lorne Swanell on the occasion of his 100th birthday. A graduate of UBC’s school of forest engineering, Swanell began his career with the forests ministry in 1930. After a year as a ranger, he was assigned to the Kamloops region to help deal with a pine beetle epidemic. Conventional wisdom on the latest outbreak holds that it spread so far because of a lack of cold winters, attributed to human carbon emissions. I grew up in northern B.C., and my last two visits to the Peace country were both in January. In 2004 I recall changing planes on the tarmac of Prince George airport, moving briskly in the daytime temperature near -40 C. That night, and

subsequent nights, the mercury dropped to -50 C. In January 2013, I returned for some discussions on the Enbridge pipeline route, and experienced a relatively balmy -30 C in the daytime. So when I hear people talk about the end of cold winters in northern B.C. because of global warming, it’s difficult to square with personal experience. Similarly flexible theories are being advanced to explain the 17-year “pause” in Earth’s average surface temperature rise, the growing Antarctic ice sheet, and this past winter’s “polar vortex.” If anyone has substantial evidence that CO2 from human activity was the trigger mechanism for the latest beetle outbreak in B.C., I’d like to see it. This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime (the first column ran in the April 24 edition of the Alberni Valley News). The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the BC coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable
because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed. The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits: There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less carbon dioxide (CO2) than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new design.

Coal misses deadline again To the Editor,
One year after the government rejected Compliance Energy’s Raven coal mine application, the company has recently missed their own self-imposed deadline for re-submission of their Raven coal mine application to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. Last April the company failed to include application information based on their own selfimposed application guidelines for Raven Coal. They did not address operational issues that are a focus of concern by many in communities that stretch from one side of Vancouver Island to the other, like the coal port here, with enclosed coal storage that is susceptible to spontaneous combustion and explosion, too close to residential neighbourhoods.

It’s not the first time Compliance Energy has failed with mining projects and now it’s looking dismal for Raven Coal with empty promises and failed applications. Compliance plans a “longwall mining” approach beneath the highly irrigated surface and subsurface of the Comox Valley located above the pristine waters of Baynes Sound that celebrate supplying high quality shellfish featured in top restaurants around the world. More than 600 hardworking people rely on these jobs. For those still hoping for this mine to create jobs, there have been several B.C. mine closures recently and HD Mining International still wants to import up to 480 Chinese workers for its proposed Murray River coal mine. HD Mining’s rationale, which was supported by both the federal and provincial
governments, is that only Mandarinspeaking Chinese understand the company’s system of “longwall mining”. Until Compliance can produce credible information to the federal and provincial regulators, as well as our communities who reject the Raven Coal mine concept in general due to the abundance of scientifically proven significant negative impacts caused by coal mining worldwide, and until their claims that the coal mine will benefit local economies, their declarations remain conjecture. City needs jobs not negativity To the Editor,
Re: Foresight for foreshore, Letters, April 17. It seems someone has bought into Chris Alemany’s negative rants.
Alemany seems to think he’s a weather expert as well as an expert in rail transport, and coal too. It must be known that rail to Port Alberni is dead. I have lived in Nanaimo for 35 years; rail on the Island operated the Dayliner from Victoria to Courtenay. This train killed many people as well as pets and livestock yearly. The fact is, no one rode on the Dayliner: that’s why passenger service was cancelled. As well, Mr. Alemany loves to talk global warming: something he knows nothing about. This planet has been going through cycles of temperature since man could count to five. Does he have any education in meteorology? Or is he paid to preach his doom and gloom theories? I’d like to know what makes him an expert on coal. Coal built every town on the east coast of
the Island. Seafood is being harvested where there were coal mines nearby in the past. Port Alberni needs good paying jobs for the next generation.

City buildings should be fined To the Editor,
Re: derelict buildings in Port Alberni. Congratulations to city council for taking the initiative to tidy up the derelict buildings in town. A financial penalty will certainly be an incentive to keep these buildings maintained and presentable. However, I wish councillors would hold city property to the same standards. City owned Lot A adjacent to Canal Beach is an industrial storage site. If this eye sore is not tidied then I hope the mayor will be fined.

Refinery moving ahead despite challenges: Black This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery. An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of very dirty coke
(much fouler than B.C. coal) which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power. The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is
far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada. Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years. Operations at the refinery will result in

more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in B.C. with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province. The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year. Unfortunately our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery.
They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that. We have a solid business plan and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We are currently moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work. We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations. Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available
for everyone to see on Canadian and American government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada. In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-of-the-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea. Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in BC.

Nancy Wilmot is used to telling other people’s stories. So when the SHAW TV journalist’s name was announced as winner of the Citizen of the Year award last Friday, she was speechless. Wilmot was one of several winners at the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual Community Excellence Awards, held at the Best Western Plus Barclay Hotel. “I really, truly did not expect this,” she said as past recipient Pam Craig introduced her. “I am truly honoured to share your stories.” Each nominee in the 12 different categories was profiled, and presenters had a chance to talk about their businesses as well before announcing the winners. “What’s so great about these awards is they’re spread around town,” said Morgan Kennah of Island Timberlands, who presented the Image Enhancement Award to Jeff Stephenson from Sproat Lake Landing. Mayor John Douglas said the number of businesses honoured at the awards underlines the direction the city is going toward diversification. “I think that’s a really good direction to be going.”

Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an
accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.

This Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, Port Alberni hosts the Regional Heritage Fair for Vancouver Island North.
On Friday, May 2, students will present their projects to judges, take part in some heritage related workshops and
activities and then board the train for an afternoon at the McLean Mill. The fair concludes on Saturday, May

Airborne teams excel at B.C.s The Alberni Airborne Volleyball teams were three of 200 competing at the provincial championships last weekend across various age groups and divisions. They had games on 30 courts consistently for three days. Alberni’s 14U team played phenomenally on the first day,
coaches Lindsay Devine and Jay Dyer said. “The girls’ positive energy, hard work and movement helped to be so successful.” In our pool play the 14U team finished second, missing first place by losing a hard battle to the Death Stars in the third match 13-15. The girls had
a rough day on Saturday, losing both their games to give them a sixth place finish out of 12 teams in their division. “The pressure the girls had to deal with over the weekend was a huge learning curve for many of our girls that have never been put in such intense situations before,” Devine said.
The girls have Nationals coming up (May 8-11). The 13U team, coached by Carly Whitmore, Claire Champagne and Jamie Clarke, finished seventh. The 12U team, coaches by Julie Anderson and Kym Cyr finished third in their pool play and 11th out of 12 in the 13U division.
Racer Brent Harris dies Inbrief
The Alberni Valley Drag Race Association has lost one of its long time supporters. Brent Harris, a crowd favourite in his bright yellow 1933 Willys Gasser for many years at Thunder in the Valley, passed away on April 26 after a short battle with cancer, according to a family member. Harris was living in Edmonton, but was married to Sharon Lover of Port Alberni, who comes from a drag racing family. He came to Thunder in the Valley every year, and delighted crowds in his distinctive Gasser (usually on just three wheels) at speeds of more than 200 mph in just 6.8 seconds. Harris loved

in the Times Colonist 10K run in Victoria. On the all-female team, three of 14 girls previously ran in the event. But completing the 10K race was a new
achievement for most of the girls. Cassia Johnson led the team with a finish time of 52:43. Megan Skjodal improved on her time from last year with
55:44, as did Gina Grumbach with 56:36. Karissa Pley and Mychaela McGifford rounded out the team’s top five finish times with 56:50 and 59:23.

One of the reasons golfers tend to live an average five years longer may be because of golfing’s unique social nature. There is no confusing golf’s social attributes. It’s a rare game, attracting those who like the company of others as well as those who don’t. It , entertains an extremely wide variety of individuals. Golf captivates common denomination groups, magnetizing those who are business makers, corporate staff workers, family generations, friends, and sporting teams, amongst others. In strange, surreal and undefined ways, the game bonds them. In our workday lives, there is stress in any orientation, but least of all on golf courses. And when it comes to meeting new people what environment can offer so unoffendingly as golf.
Here’s an example. Imagine the reader in a movie theatre with many open seats. A stranger approaches and asks if they could sit with them? While I personally don’t see what’s wrong with it, most might think twice. But on a golf course, it’s recognized as a natural, normal way to join up when playing the game with others. It’s a bonding key to a social door, and deep down; I think most everyone exists for the companionship of another. If that were not so, I doubt marriages and relationships would exist. On the same level, it keeps people youthful, because play is involved. Today, experts will testify loneliness appears on the rise amongst the elderly and young alike, claiming it ages the human. Leo Arthur Joseph Gaudreault Leo passed away suddenly on April 3, 2014. He was predeceased by his father Arthur and his brother Michael and is survived by his loving wife Janet, his mother Mary, his daughter Lisa, step children Sean, Keith (Lynn), Lana (Ben) and their mother Grace, siblings Denise (Michael), Andy, Anita (Raymond) and Larry, grandchildren Kaylam and Anthony, Kai and Kam, Kayden and Aliah, and nephew Stephen. Leo was born June 10, 1953 in Port Alberni. He will be greatly missed by his commercial and sport fishing buddies. He loved life, but more than anything he loved spending time with his grandson Kaylam. A Celebration Service will be held at Notre Dame Church on Saturday,, May 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leo’s name to Ty Watson House or the charity of your choice. Lori (Ogden) Smith Sept 30 1949-Apr 13 2014 Lori passed away at home surrounded by loved ones after a brave fight with cancer. Lori was born in New Westminster to Fred and Kitty Kwasnycia. The family moved to Sooke in 1953. She married Rod Ogden in 1967 and they raised two wonderful daughters. Port Alberni was their home from 1991, until Rod’s passing in Feb 2011. Lori moved back to Sooke and subsequently married Don Smith in 2012, who took exceptional care of her until her passing. Lori was predeceased by her parents Fred and Kitty Kwasnycia and her beloved brother Larry Kwasnycia. Lori is survived by her loving husband Don, her two daughters Lesa Ogden and Alena(Scott) Christensen, her three precious granddaughters Sara Ogden, Sydnee Ogden-Moore and Hayley Christensen, her sisters Lynne(Jim) Barber and Leah(Dan) Butler, her sisters in law, Judy(Tom) Nicks, Cathy McCully and Shirley Roy along with numerous other family and good friends. We also would like to give a very Special Thank You, to Dr. Ellen Anderson, the house support staff and Sooke Hospice Society. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank. This position will be required to test and perform diagnosis on Yamaha outboard engines; resolve motor and propeller breakdowns; and repair any malfunctions on the boats’ navigational equipment and electrical systems. Moreover, this position will maintain accurate maintenance records and supplies, with the goal of being able to actively provide a well-maintained and dependable fleet of boats for our sea-based operations. The ideal applicant will have: • Minimum 3 years experience in the marine industry; • Able to operate various hand and power tools; • Team player with good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; • Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision. This position requires shift-work in a camp-based setting. Prerequisites to hiring are a fitness test and a criminal record check.
