With possible school closures being announced tonight, more than 100 people gathered Friday to show their support and raise awareness of their plan to save Qualicum Beach Elementary School. Now formally organized as the Qualicum Beach Community School Steering Committee, the event Friday afternoon was fun and active, keeping the audience moving with aerobic dancing interspersed with short speeches about the importance of the school to the community. “Closing QBES is going to drive children and families out of the public school system and out of the town,” co-chair of the committee Anna Sjoo told The NEWS. “Community schools have been proven to be successful and sustainable. Creating a community school is an opportunity to provide an alternative, innovative and more attractive model of education for our children.” Complete with a 23-page working plan, the committee is calling on the trustees of School District 69 (Qualicum) to hold off closing QBES for one year to give them time to convert it to a community school model to help save it. “We have given you many compelling reasons to keep the school open — improved learning opportunities and outcomes for students, community wellness, access to increased revenues and in-kind donations, improved community relations, among numerous others,” said co-chair Anne Skipsey. The committee is calling on all supporters to wear red and attend the school board meeting tonight, Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. in the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.

Master Corporal Craig Boyd got a unique look at his hometown last week. Sitting in a CF-18 Royal Canadian Air Force fighter jet, Boyd convinced pilot Major Yannick Gregoire to take a small

detour on the way to Comox from their base in Cold Lake, Alta. Those who were fortunate enough to be at Parksville’s Community Park got to see a pair of CF18s fly right over the beach, take a turn and come by once again. “It definitely was interesting from where I was sitting,” said Boyd, a grad-

uate of Kwalikum Secondary School and a member of the RCAF since 2006. “I lived there forever but I was barely able to recognize it.” Boyd is a mechanic with the RCAF based in Cold Lake. He doesn’t often get to fly in the jets he works on. See CONTINUING, page A9

NEWS takes silver for general excellence

The Parksville Qualicum Beach News was awarded the silver medal Saturday for general excellence in its circulation category for B.C. community newspapers. In the closest result of all categories, The NEWS was edged out for the gold by .17 of a percentage point by its Black Press sister paper, The Campbell River Mirror. Another Black Press paper, The Cowichan News Leader Pictorial, was third. “There’s a lot of moving parts to putting a newspaper together and getting it to the door,” said The NEWS publisher Peter McCully. “Sweating all of those details is rewarded in the general excellence category. We have a great team.” The awards were handed out during a B.C.-Yukon Community Newspaper Association gala at the River Rock Casino and Hotel in Richmond. Here, in part, is what the judges had to say about The NEWS: “Here is a paper that is really dedicated to covering its community well. Consistently strong in all areas, with especially good organization . . . good, sharp leads and strong, engaging writing with equally strong photography.” The NEWS had the highest mark of all the papers in three of the judge’s 11 categories: editorials, arts and local features. In the last four years, The NEWS has taken home two gold and two silver in the general excellence category. “Our readers are engaged and interested in their community and their newspaper of record — they help guide us in everything we do,” said The NEWS editor John Harding. “It’s nice to get recognition from our peers, but at the end of the day it’s about consistently making a responsible, entertaining product for our readers.”

Teachers started job action across the province last week, but the initial impact will be limited. “This job action, in stage one is different from past job actions in that there is no direction to teachers not to do extracurricular activities,” said School District 69 Superintendent Rollie Koop. That said this is one of a limited number of districts cancelling recess. “The same as the last two job actions we have cancelled recess at the middle and elementary schools,” Koop said, based on safety questions. “We touched base with all the principals and vice principals to see if they and the other exempt staff could cover and we didn’t feel they could cover it safely.” The district is encouraging schools to squeeze in nutritional and exercise breaks when they can and Koop said he has still seen lots of student activity out in the school yards. B.C. Teachers’ Federation President Jim Iker said in a April 23 news release that the cancelation of recess in about 12 districts is “unnecessary and inappropriate,” pointing to a Labour

Relations Board order that states: “With respect to any before/after school, recess or noon hour supervision normally provided by teachers… supervision will continue to be provided by teachers subject to the employer utilizing management and excluded staff to the best extent possible to replace teachers for these activities.” He said the stage one job action “is administrative in nature only and teachers will continue to do previously scheduled voluntary activities. As such, there is no reason for any districts to cancel events, trips, or extra-curricular activities.” During stage one teachers will not attend meetings called by principals or vice-principals, but they will continue to count attendance and communicate with parents. As a result of the cancelled recess, schools are shortening their days and busses are running 15 minutes earlier than regularly scheduled at the end of the day. The employer and teacher representatives are continuing to negotiate at the provincial level. Koop said they “recognize this is a provincial issue and try to not have it impact the local district too much.”

FIRE AND ICE FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND IN QUALICUM BEACH

In his early years, Valdy was a bit of a gunslinger. That was, when it came to showing off his technical ability onstage, he said. “I’d like to think I am paying more attention now than I did to making sure my time on stage is maximized as opposed to doing any throw-away material,” said the Canadian Folk Legend while making his way back to Salt Spring Island from an Earth Day show in Ontario last week. “I play things I enjoy and therefore it gives the audience a chance to enjoy rather than trying things that are technically challenging for me but maybe a big yawn for everyone else.” Valdy, whose full name is Paul Valdemar Horsdal, has

sold almost half a million copies of his 14 albums. He has four Gold albums to his credit and got two Juno Awards (and has been nominated seven times). The 68-year-old continues to write music, perform and tour regularly. Valdy will be playing at Qualicum Beach’s Fire and Ice Festival on May 3. He’ll be playing on the main stage from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Valdy said he stops into Qualicum Beach from time to time and that the Shady Rest is one of his favourite pubs. The Fire and Ice Street Festival was cancelled last year after 21 years, but the popular event (which brings up to 5,000 people to downtown Qualicum Beach) will be back full throttle. Fire and Ice combines the cool talents of ice sculptors and the hot fiery goodness of chilli, which this year will be expanded to other hot food options

from local restaurants. Ice carvers from around the world will line the downtown streets of Qualicum Beach creating their masterpieces. People can amble along checking out the creations while enjoying the hot treats that will be located at stations throughout the town. The NEWS, a sponsor of the event, has partnered with Thalassa Restaurant to enter a chili team. Last week’s regular RDN meeting marked what chair Joe Stanhope called “a watershed moment” in the Fairwinds development project, a plan that’s been on the table for six years and is finally headed to formal public hearing. The board gave second reading to zoning bylaw amendments which will see land known as “the Notch” zoned entirely as parkland — preserving what Nanoose First Nation (Snaw-naw-as) chief David Bob described as “culturally significant land.” “We have no hard feelings about the Fairwinds development,” Bob told The NEWS in a phone interview Saturday. “We agree development has to happen but we, as a nation, have to look after our sacred sites and we will do so.” According to RDN manager of current planning Jeremy Holm, the Notch lands are located within Fairwinds, encompassing an area of approximately 43 hectares.

Fairwinds Community Association president Dave Patterson said while he would have liked to see this project go to public hearing last year, he is happy a public hearing date has been set to move forward with development. “From our point of view we think there is a fairly strong support base for this project,” said Patterson on behalf of the FCA. “We’re pleased the public hearing has been scheduled and we’re looking forward to development happening.” Holme said while there is widespread support for the Fairwinds development concerns over water and environmental issues are still at large and he expects the public hearing to be a full house. Chair of the mid-Island wilderness committee Annette Tanner said the Fairwinds development project compromises a globally imperiled ecosystem. “We have a unique climate and high biological diversity which gives way to an abundance of plant and animal species which are not being protected by government,” said Tanner. “We need to preserve this ecosystem — we can’t afford to continue development.” The formal public hearing is slated for May 12 at 6.30 p.m. at Nanoose Community Hall, 2925 Northwest Bay Road.

Quake felt by Qualicum residents

A tsunami warning was not issued; no reports of injuries or damage CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake off the west coast of Vancouver Island was felt in Parksville Qualicum Beach, across the Island and on parts of the mainland at approximately 8.10 p.m. Wednesday, April 23. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicentre was about 94 km south of Port Hardy and 157 km west of Campbell River, occurring at a depth of 11.4 km. The USGS reported three aftershocks: the first a magnitude 5.0 at 8.20 p.m., the second a magnitude 4.2 at 8.41 p.m. and the third a magnitude 4.2 at 10.16 p.m. A tsunami warning was not issued. Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department fire chief Nick Acciavatti said there were no reports of injuries or damage. “We were actually out in Coombs

training with the Coombs-Hilliers department at the time of the quake,” said Acciavatti. “We got alerts but that’s about all we felt.” However, Qualicum Beach resident Christa Burger said she felt the earthquake immediately from her living room.

“I was sitting on my couch and all of a sudden I felt the couch moving then I felt my legs moving — I thought ‘what the heck?’” she said. “I walked into the kitchen and noticed the chains of my coo coo clock with the weights on them were shaking.” Burger said she felt the earthquake “for a good minute” but was “shaken up for quite a while afterwards.” Wendy Maurer said she was sitting in a chair in her Qualicum Beach home when the quake hit. “The chair I was sitting in kind

of swayed in a rolling motion and I thought ‘Holy smokes this has got to be an earthquake.” Maurer said she wasn’t scared so much as curious about it. “It was a weird experience,” she said. “It wasn’t the first earthquake I have felt but it was certainly the biggest.” Arlene Veenhof was visiting a friend who lives near Spider Lake when she felt the quake. “It felt like my chair was rocking,” said Veenhof. “It was a sort of dizzying feeling.” Veenhof said she timed the earthquake and recorded 40 seconds. Brenda Boyd said she also felt the quake from the second floor of her Qualicum Beach home. “I felt it but it was pretty mild,” said Boyd. “I was sitting on the couch with my cat and all of a sudden I felt something and said ‘We’re having an earthquake.’” Acciavatti said this serves as a good reminder for residents to be aware of earthquakes which are common on Vancouver Island. Comparatively, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011 killing 185 people.

An hour after auditor Mark McGorman told council the “city is in good stead,” Coun. Bill Neufeld decided that good financial news should equal some relief for Parksville taxpayers. Neufeld made a motion to reduce the planned two per cent tax increase to one per cent. “We can afford to back off on some of the increase,” Neufeld said. “We are in a tremendous position as far as the welfare of the City of Parksville is concerned.” The motion was defeated, with only Neufeld and Coun. Al Greir in favour. Councillors Sue Powell, Peter Morrison and Carrie Powell-Davidson voted against the motion. Mayor Chris Burger did not indicate a vote, and Coun. Marc Lefebvre was absent. In other news from Parksville city council’s meeting Wednesday night: • Council heard about an idea put forward by the Parksville Historical Society to hold a summer farmers’ market on Friday evenings at the museum on the Island Highway and Northwest Bay Road. Society spokesperson David Haynes said the plan is to have 30-plus vendor spots for farmers and 15 for artisans. Haynes said a byproduct of the market would be to “expose the museum to a whole new audience.” “We’re not asking for money,” said Haynes. “We’re just asking for permission to allow us to raise our own funds through a minor change in our agreement (its lease with the city).” Nothing was finalized on Wednesday. Council asked staff to have a look

They made the trip from Cold Lake to Comox on Thursday in about 80 minutes, averaging a speed of 600 knots (about 1,100 km-h). “That was only the second time in my life (he flew in a CF18),” said Boyd. “It was amazing. It’s definitely hard on the system — when I got out of the jet, my body was done.” A pair of people on the beach Thursday had more than a passing interest in the F-18s soaring above, Craig’s parents Brenda and Greg. “I’m a pretty proud mama — it was spectacular” said Brenda, who went to Comox later to meet up with her son and see the jets. “And it was also really great to see him do his job, up close.” Master Corporal Craig said family played a big role in his career-path decision. Brenda’s family has a long history in the RCAF. And it was Craig’s uncle Leo who convinced Craig to enlist. “I’m trying to keep that (family tradition) going,” said Craig. “And it’s a really awesome job.” Craig went to BCIT after graduating KSS and took automotive mechanic classes. He was in Chilliwack living with uncle Leo doing practicums at auto dealers when he decided he would shift his focus from working on ground vehicles to planes. “I like working on cars, but the old saying is, don’t make your hobby your career,” said

Craig, who said he doesn’t see himself leaving the RCAF any time soon. “I love it — I will be in for the long haul,” he said. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.” Craig’s job — he’s an air frame tech and in charge of a crew that works on the F-18s — has taken him to Las Vegas, Key West Florida and the arctic, among other places. He admits there are some things about working with the RCAF that may be different from the

private sector. “There are definitely certain sides of my job I can’t even talk about.” And what about living in Cold Lake? “I love it there,” said Craig, who will be returning to Parksville Qualicum Beach in the summer to get married to Lauren, a massage therapist he met in Cold Lake. “There are very few places where I can drive my quad from my property right to some trails. If I did that in Qualicum Beach, I’d be getting a talking to.”

Shifting concerns

re the right-of-centre governing parties in Ottawa and Victoria misreading the evolution of what they believe is their base of voter support? The long-accepted line of thinking was those who elected the Conservatives federally and the B.C. Liberals provincially believe in fiscal responsibility. They also believe in less government and the power of the free enterprise system. However, we believe the priorities of these people, a different generation than the days of Brian Mulroney or W.A.C. Bennett, have shifted a bit. While the tenets of conservatism listed above remain, this block of voters is now much more complex. You can be a champion for the environment and a conservative. You can support public health care and education systems and still vote for Conservative and B.C. Liberal candidates. Regardless of one’s political persuasion, all can likely agree we need government to marshal and protect three core areas of responsibility: health care, education and public safety. Thing is, the Conservatives and B.C. Liberals are not only falling down in regards to these three core responsibilities, they are underestimating the evolving sensitivities of their voter base. The local school board has to close schools. We get reports every week about seemingly ridiculous wait times at the new Oceanside Health Centre. Meanwhile, cuts are also made in food safety monitoring, conservation officer coverage, lighthouses — public safety concerns are also getting short shrift. Responses to those who voice these concerns, especially from the B.C. Liberals, is heavy-handed and arrogant. We are tightening our belts in Victoria, you do the same, is what MLA Michelle Stilwell and the rest of the B.C. Liberals are saying. While the NDP alternative in B.C. is not appealing to those who voted B.C. Liberal, Premier Christy Clark, Stilwell and others need to do a better job taking care of their core responsibilities and respect the changing values of their core constituency. The B.C. Liberals were elected on promises of an improved economy and job creation. We have seen scant evidence of either in Parksville Qualicum Beach. Letters CURLING BENEFITS

As a founding member of the Parksville Curling Club, I find it disturbing to hear that the city fathers find it necessary to impose a tax on our facilities, a non-profit organization. Thanks to Paul Reitsma, the mayor at the time of the organization of the club, who convinced council the benefits of the curling club and supplied property in the industrial park. Ten years of fundraising by way of casinos, raffles, catalogue delivery and we had a financial start. Thanks to the RDN who offered us the old arena when the new Oceanside Place facilities were completed. Sixteen of us issued a cheque in the amount of $1,000 each to purchase rocks for four sheets of ice from Harrison Hot Springs, who were closing their curling rink. Volunteers, good management and hard work has brought world-class facilities. Yes, I say this because some years ago we had two teams from Japan here for weeks practising for world competition and also a visit from world curling champion Russ Howard. I’m sure if city council realized the benefit of the facilities they would be offering help instead of actions that could cause us to close. GEORGE GUDBRANSON Parksville

COMMUNITY SCHOOLS As a parent with a child at Qualicum Beach Elementary (QBES), I would like to thank town council for taking an interest in the school closure issue. Closing QBES in the heart of Qualicum would have a negative impact on businesses and on the town’s ability to attract and

retain young families. There is the opportunity to turn QBES into a community school, which would offer programs and services that benefit all members of the community. VIU Elder College, yoga instructors and local artists have already committed to running programs at Qualicum Beach Community School. A community school is able to rent out space and generate income as a non-profit organization. The Qualicum Beach Community School Steering Committee has put together a business plan to run Qualicum Beach Elementary as a community school. It has asked the school board for one year to demonstrate that a community school can enhance community wellness while increasing revenue for the district. The Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District (SD68) has designated five community schools. Their education committee is also recommending that their board “include the concept of community schools as much as possible” in their ten-year plan. Our school board should explore the option of community schools before deciding on closures. While French Creek Community School and Errington Elementary are important community assets, they are not designated as community schools. As a parent, I strongly encourage the school trustees to give the community school option a chance. It’s not about closing schools in other parts of the district; it’s about options that can generate new revenue. School closures are permanent. They provide short-term financial gain; however, they lead to a decline in enrollment. Instead, let’s explore a positive solution: community schools across our district beginning in Qualicum Beach.

I am surprised at the amount of coverage given to the faction that sees a single use for the rail corridor on Vancouver Island. As seen in Nanaimo, the rail line and cycle and foot paths are quite compatible, and also evident along the expressway where there is room for both road and trails. The rest of the world is increasing the use of trains to move heavy and hazardous materials. Vancouver Island would benefit from the same separation of materials as well as big savings on highway maintenance. A local management, to direct and grow both freight and passengers traffic, would be vastly superior to one located in a basement in New Brunswick as is now the case. We need politicians capable of looking forward to build a stronger future, not ones looking back.

We used to have 15 minutes, but now we have to eat fast at our desks and get back to work. We didn’t have time to take a break or go outside. We had to wait until lunch time to play outside. Young actors contribute to poignant play Mrs. Reynolds and the Ruffian is playing at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach from April 24 to May 11 REVIEW BY LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Mrs. Reynolds and the Ruffian is a fitting play for Qualicum Beach. It brings to light the strained relationships and misunderstandings that are too often evident between young people and seniors. It’s a poignant and thought provoking play, not meant to be a nail-biter that is wildly entertaining. Director Arlene Blundell put it well in her program message. “…some productions will be entertaining, some will challenge us to think. This presentation, I hope, will challenge you to think, consider your biases, yet be a hopeful inspiration to you in trying to relate to a younger, more alien generation.” The story surrounds an elderly lady named Mrs. Reynolds and her endeavour to have a small garden and clean local park despite all the vandals and deliquents about. Jay is misguided and nasty young boy who get caught vandalizing and stealing from the old lady. Rather than sending him to jail, it is decided they will take a restorative justice route called community payback, assisting Mrs. Reynolds in cleaning up her garden and the community. I was very impressed with the acting in the play. Mack Lazzarino (also known as Mackenzie Blanchard as listed in the program) gave a brilliant performance capturing the character Jay. Mack is a Grade 9 student at Kwalikum Secondary School. He has taken part in a number of local acting camps and has worked with Bard to Broadway in the past, but this was his first performance with Echo Players, and hopefully not his last. Other youth starring in play were Quinn Proud, who did a phenomenal job portraying Jay’s crass best friend Kieran, and Alexandra Harris, who also did an admiral job in her role playing Jay’s love interest. Aviva Fox never disappoints in her acting roles and this was no exception. She was a very convincing Mrs. Reynolds and she nailed the timing and her lines, both

funny and profound, every time. Kim Bellwood was also a great addition to this excellent cast, as Cassie, Jays’ social worker. I liked the honesty in the play. Mrs. Reynolds was certainly not a shining example of a role model in every case, but instead a believable, human character. The play made you think about the assumptions people make when judging people they know nothing about. True there is no excuse for vandalizing and stealing, but often times there is more going on than meets the eye. We’re not all the same. We were not all raised the same. We all have different insecurities and have

made different mistakes. But we all need love, support and encouragement in order to be good, happy people. And sometimes we have to go out of our comfort zones to truly make a difference in someone else’s life. Thanks to the director, cast and crew for delivering a strong play and giving us something meaningful to think about. Art showcase in Nanoose Bay

The Nanoose Bay Studio Tour Group originally held two studio tours a year but organizers discovered it was difficult for some people to make it out to all the studios involved in the tour. Now they get together once a year and show their work in one place and hold a Studio Tour in October and then in December for the Christmas Crawl. One of the participants, Deb Kasprick of Affinity Stone Jewellery will have her stunning pieces for sale. The jewellery maker said she strives to create uniquely different designs made with hand picked gems and crystals from her travels. A lot of her inspiration stems from seeing the art and architecture of Mexico and she agreed her creations have undergone a transformation since she started her artistic journey almost three years ago. “Everything always evolves … you can’t stay the same. My latest thing is incorporating leather and copper into my designs.” Creating artistically inspired pieces using colourful stones with copper and silver, Kasprick agreed a lot of her pieces are more earthy and rustic and have an organic feel. Her bold pendants with big nuggets on hammered copper plate are certainly not bland.

Some of her designs have free form copper accents and bent wire scraps while others are elegant and dainty with a hint of bling. Kasprick said each design is different and they definitely make a statement. “I often use leather to pull off a design concept. It is a nice change from using mixed metals.” She said the different characteristics and colours of the stones she uses evoke an array of emotions and she is excited for the public to see her new Mexican inspired necklaces. Every year she and her husband Dave, who is a metal artist, do a fundraiser at Halloween and at Christmas to generate donations for the local food bank as well as spay and neuter clinics in Mexico. Admittance to the showcase is by donation of non-perishable foods or cash for the Nanoose Bay food bank. Twenty studios and guest artists are taking part in the event and a 2014 Nanoose Bay Studio Guide will also be available at the event and people are encouraged to come by year round to those studios. As Parksville’s Chuffin Cafe hits its 27th anniversary — “120 in Chuffin years” the owner jokes — they are as busy as ever. “We’ve survived everything, nothing could stop us now,” said Gayna Thompson who started the restaurant with her parents Rhoda and George Thompson in 1987. She admits to ups and downs over the years, but the family operation has adapted and survived. The biggest shift came in 1994 with a complete re-design and the addition of their famous nostalgia theme, complete with hundreds of photos of the biggest film and music stars of the last 100 years, focused on the mid-century. She said it’s surprising how often someone comes in with a story about an encounter, or working with one of the featured stars, like one guy who took John Wayne on a chauffeured camping trip. “Music wise my first love is the Beat-

George is no longer around, but Rhoda is still busy in the family biz, and her granddaughter Alycia — who literally grew up in the restaurant — is now the main server. Gayna said she is trying to ease up on her workload these days but isn’t doing a good job of that. She said she still loves meeting so many different people and hearing all the nice stories. The Chuffin Cafe is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday on Craig Street, behind the Royal Bank.

A 19-year-old Parksville girl was presented with the silver level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Saturday night at a ceremony held in Burnaby. Sandra McNeill, the only recipient from Parksville Qualicum Beach, accepted the award from the lieutenant governor of British Columbia Judith Guichon. A news release issued by the Duke of Edinburgh’s executive director Sushil Saini described the award as “the most prestigious international youth award in the world.” “It’s a really big deal to me,” McNeill told The NEWS with pride. “I’ve been working towards this for three years — it’s a major achievement.” McNeill explains the purpose of the award is to encourage young people to set their own goals and challenge themselves to grow on a personal level. There is no competition between the participants as the award recognizes long term commitment, self motivation, community engagement and persistence. THEODORE KERELUK March 1, 1935 â€“ April 14, 2014 On April 14th, Kornel (aka â€œCurlyâ€? â€“ aka â€œEugeneâ€?) passed away at his home in Parkville, BC with his loving wife of 50 years, Marianne, by his side. Curly enjoyed spending his retirement days beating a little white ball around the golf course or throwing granite rocks down the ice at the curling rink. To offset the gray hairs from these games, Dad could be found having fun with his two daughters, Cortina (Trevor) and Corina (Paul); or his three young granddaughters, Morgan, Ryann and Berlin. Curly was always eager to lend a hand to his sonsin-law when they needed to â€œfixâ€? things around the house, when any woodworking needed to be completed, or a tequila shot needed to be drank. Curly enjoyed 35 eventful years in the RCMP and, if that wasnâ€™t enough, another 10 years with TransCanada Pipeline in Calgary before retiring to Parksville with his beloved Marianne. JOSEPH FRED BOCHEK July 22, 1927 - April 9, 2014

Joseph Fred Bochek, 86, of Parksville, BC, passed away on Wednesday, April 9th at Trillium Lodge.Â Joe was predeceased by his incredible wife, Christel, whom he married in 1948.Â They had relocated to Vancouver Island in 1972. Born July 22, 1927 in Climax, Saskatchewan, Joe was a larger than life individual whose presence filled a room and his baritone voice and deep laugh carried through a crowd. He wore many different hats, from farmer, to rancher to truck driver to commercial fisherman, to woodworker.Â Joe was capable of creating amazing pieces of art and furniture from burls which remain distinctive and timeless in their rugged beauty.Â Throughout his entire life though, his one trueÂ passion wasÂ bluegrass and country music.Â Joe and his Gibson Hummingbird guitar will be fondly remembered as a fixture and co-founder of the Coombs Bluegrass Festival and within the bluegrass community. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Myrna June Yuhanna Semple on April 21 at Eagle Park Care Home. She was born March 11, 1932 in Vancouver. Myrna leaves behind her loving husband Ross Semple; sons Ralph (Roz), David (Julie); daughter Debby (Blaine); son-in-law Ralph Van Gervan; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She is predeceased by her parents Elvi and Martin Hagglund and daughter Wendy Van Gervan. Myrna received a Canadian Commemorative medal for being an outstanding volunteer (32 year Brownie Leader), also a member of the Port Alberni Sunshine Club, Floor Curling Club, Europa Club and also loved her crafts. DONALD BERTRAM NIX 1923-2014 Don had a great life. He had two great loves. Kathleen (Kay) Louise (Taylor) Nix, the mother of their five children, and Sophia Allan Thornley Nix. Sophia came into Donâ€™s life at just the right moment. Their love lit up each otherâ€™s recent years. Donâ€™s family would like to thank Sophia for bringing much joy to his life. Don was born in Sterling Ont. Sept 25,1923. Straight off the farm and only 18 years old, he enlisted and began his 25 year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Don met and married Kay in Moose Jaw during the war. Their early years together were busy, pursuing a career, raising a family, and moving with a quiet regularity. It wasnâ€™t easy but Don and Kay made it work. After retiring from the Air Force, Don had a second career as a life insurance agent. Don and Kay retired to Qualicum in 1984 and Qualicum became home. Don loved his golf, fishing, gardening and cards. After Kay passed, this community embraced Don and, in that warmth, he found Sophia. It didnâ€™t take him long to know that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He proposed to Sophia at The Final Approach and they married before the year was out. Don is survived by his wife Sophia; his children: Brian (Gayle), Marilyn, Bernie, Gord (Michele) and Noreen; his grandchildren: Shannon (Alison), Kevin (Ruth) and Sean; is great grandchildren: Rachel and Jakob; Sophiaâ€™s children: David (Gail), Chris (Cathy), Andy (Debbie), and Tim; Grandchildren Dianne, Karen, Michael, Patrick, Melissa, Robyn; Great grandchildren: David, Megan, Nevaeh, Tsifira. Vera Geeske Carlton passed away peacefully on April 22 with Penny and Roy Dutton at her side. Predeceased by her loving husband John Wyndham Carlton (Poppi), and by her brothers Gerrit, Kees, & her sister Klaske. Vera Geeske is survived by her stepchildren by marriage and their extended families. Philip (Suzanne, Tania and Ryan and their families), Nigel (Carole, Lindsay and Lesley and their families), Penny Dutton (Roy, Christopher and Jeffrey and their families), Hugh (Elizabeth and Jillian). Vera Geeske Carlton is also survived by her relatives in the Netherlands (Holland); Hannes de Groot and Femmy de Groot; Albert, Nynke de Groot and family; Joop de Groot; Thea van Wees-Nuijen, Ingrid Nuijen, and Hermen de Groot. Growing up in Leeuwarden, Vera survived the German occupation of the Netherlands, and often enthralled our family with stories of the life and times under the occupation. Upon immigrating to Canada, Vera Geeske settled in Edmonton and worked as a nurse practioner for Dr. Murenbeeld who, along with his wife and family became lifelong friends of Vera Geeske. As one would anticipate, Vera Geeske provided support and caring to many patients. After marrying John in 1970, she found her calling as a library assistant with the Calgary Board of Education, serving in two elementary schools in Calgary (Bel-Air and Braeside). Vera Geeske had saved many pictures and notes from students who came in contact with her. John and Geeske retired to the beautiful Qualicum Beach area in 1987, becoming part of the community through the Memorial Golf Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, and making many new friends. The family would like to thank Drs. McClure and Haslett for their care and attention to Vera Geeske over the years and especially after the onset of her dementia. We would also like to extend our thanks to all the staff at Eagle Park Care Facility in Qualicum Beach, especially those in the Green Wing, for your care, compassion and support during Vera Geeskeâ€™s time with you. At Vera Geeskeâ€™s request, a graveside memorial and celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 2:30pm at the Qualicum Beach Municipal Cemetery 867 Jones Street Qualicum Beach, B, prior to her internment with her husband Johnâ€™s ashes. Royals’ earn split in home opener

The Parksville Royals earned a split of their home openers this past weekend against the North Shore Twins and Coquitlam Reds, winning two games and losing two games. It was a mixed bag in terms of the weather at Inouye–Wallace Field at Springwood Park but the home opening double header was played out, with the Royals taking the first of two games Saturday. Andrew Evernden, who hails from Parksville, got the start for the Royals in game one, taking to the mound. Evernden went six innings on the day, giving up one run on just five hits and striking out five. Colton Tuka and Will Drewery came on in relief in the seventh inning to close the game out for the Royals, with Drewery collecting the save. Lead off man Ethan Fox, from Campbell River, went 2–3 at the dish and both Owen Kelly and Liam Ballance, from Errington, collected RBI’s for the Royals in the 2–1 victory. “We worked and played as a team real well. It was a good team win, everyone executed well and it was a solid game for us all around,” assistant coach Bruce Biro said. “Andrew got off to a bit of a slow start, which is usually the

way it goes for him, but he finished off strong and it was nice to see him go deep in this one. He pitched well and we played

good defense behind him.” The Royals dropped game two against the Twins by a score of 5–0. Owen Kelly took

the loss in that one, going five innings and giving up two runs while striking out four. The Royals managed only two hits

in the second game of the double header, with Evernden and Jacob Ingersoll going 1–3 at the plate. Sunday, the Royals were back at it against the Coquitlam Reds. Game one saw the Royals coming away with a 5–3 victory thanks to a good outing at the dish from Ethan Fox, who went 2–4 and drove in two runs. Andrew Evernden went 1–2 at the plate and had one RBI as well. Josh Anderson, from Nanoose Bay, got the start in game one and pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with one strikeout. Both Drewery and Tuka came on in relief once again, with Tuka getting the save. Game two on Sunday was much the same as game two on Saturday for the Royals, dropping a 4–0 game to the Reds. Keller Anderson got the start in game two and went five innings, giving up three runs with five hits and three strikeouts. The Royals once again were spinning their wheels when it came to offense, managing just five hits in the game. The Parksville Royals are back at it on Wednesday, April 30 as they take on the Nanaimo Pirates. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at Inouye–Wallace Field at Springwood Park.

The Kwalikum Secondary junior girls soccer team will be headed into the North Islands as the number one seed from their south division. The Kondors started the league playoffs as the fourth place team, behind first place Dover Bay, Ladysmith and the Ballenas Whalers (third). The Kondors had a tough road to get to the North Islands, which are being held in Qualicum Beach at both KSS and Qualicum Beach Middle School May 1-2. KSS’ first match of the league playoffs was against the Barsby Bulldogs under some nasty field conditions. Played at Dover Bay in Nanaimo and with rain in

the forecast for Thursday, the girls tried everything not to let the sloppy weather effect their game. “It’s always tougher when the weather isn’t favourable. Playing in sloppy conditions with the rain and mud tends to make the game sloppy too,” head coach Ruth Stefanek said. “Luckily, the girls were well prepared and didn’t let the bad weather stop them from playing their game.” The Kondors came out strong in their opening game of the tournament, beating Barsby 3–0. Goalkeeper Grace Yacoboski earned the clean sheet in this one as Sofia Jorgenson scored off a corner kick and Alex Shaw bulged the twine two times for the Kondors. Saturday saw better conditions as

the Kondors took on the host Dover Bay Dolphins in their first test of the day. Shaw put the Kondors on the board in the first two minutes off a penalty kick. Yacoboski earned yet another clean sheet with the 1-0 shutout which sent KSS to the final against Ladysmith. “We played really great defense in that second game,” Stefanek said. “We put a lot of pressure on their shooters all game and they had a hard time putting a lot of their shots on net. Our defense really played big in that one and Grace made some big saves to keep the door closed.” Ladysmith found their way on the board early in to the game when the Kondors had one bounce off a defender for an own goal. Ladysmith would find

the net once again in the middle of the first half to go up to 2–0. The Kondors came out of the gates in the second half and cut the lead to one after Ladysmith’s keeper put a clearing attempt off Jorgenson for their first score. KSS got another tally with five minutes in regular time as Nica Drake was hauled down outside the 18-yard box, with Shaw converting the free kick. The Kondors pulled the win out with a corner kick, which bounced off Maya Gayton and found it’s way to the back of the net after Shaw put it in with just seconds left in overtime. The Kondors now host the North Islands May 1-2 with their first game at 10 a.m. May 1 against Barsby at KSS.

A trail cleverly conceived with balance MICHAEL ADDISCOTT NEWS Contributor

It’s nice when the work of a community is recognized and augmented, especially when it leads to more people being able to enjoy an experience. This is particularly true of trails. When they are built right, they can be a valuable transport link or a literal and figurative pathway to health, nature, freedom and relaxation. In the case of The Lighthouse Country Regional Trail, the construction of the route strikes a cleverly conceived balance between widely inclusive accessibility and the feeling of being IN nature, rather than looking at it. The route, if completed as a loop, varies significantly in build technique, but, irrespective of terrain or construction, is designated as a Regional Trail Corridor in all but one short section, which we will miss on this occasion. Around the whole trail development, surroundings are predominantly forest, but include woodlot (owned by the Wilson family), Crown Land, hydro cut, forest service road , river valley and, for much of the route, the edge of the dormant E&N Railway. We will only be covering the South Loop in this feature, but stay tuned for a description of the North loop and the trail used to link with it at a later date. Heading West from the ample parking lot (complete with washrooms) just off Lions Way, you will quickly get a feel for the inclusive nature of this first section. Tightly compacted gravel makes for a predictable surface, suitable for walkers, runners, wheelchair users, strollers and leisure cyclists. All but the smallest, narrowest tires will roll with relative ease, and the unpaved treatment given to the trail retains a slightly less urbanized feel. Another feature worth noting is the tap rail installed along the length of this flagship trail section, aiding access for those with vision impairment. A dead straight avenue of around 250 metres, edging the ballfield of Lion’s Park brings us to a Northward turn at the crossing of the E&N Railway. Once through the staggered barriers, take careful note of the trailhead to your left. If you plan to complete a full loop, this is where you will re-join on your way out of the woods. For now, though, bear right across the first of many well constructed bridges that help to hold the trail above the soft ground and watercourses. Two of the bridges, to be crossed later, are remarkable in their appearance. Unlike the dozen or so wooden bridges which blend relatively well into their surroundings, these two, constructed from gleaming aluminium, look like they would be more at home in a marina. While doubtless

well chosen for strength and durability, they look more than a little incongruous in this forest setting. The wet nature of the surroundings have clearly required a massive investment in trailbuilding expertise and infrastructure. The result of this commitment to doing it right from the start is that less maintenance will be required. A walk through on a sunny Spring day lets you look deep into the heart of a lush, green forest, rich with dripping mosses, rotting stumps, draining marshes and towering second growth evergreens. Along with the bridges, countless culverts channel water beneath the trail, keeping it firm and dry. While the path would easily allow two bikes, strollers or wheelchairs to pass in opposite directions, it follows much of the high ground used by the original trailbuilders to minimize wetness so it twists and turns in a most attractive, but not very direct, way through the trees. Keep eyes peeled, not only for interesting natural features, but also for some creative chainsaw work from the trailbuilders. Toadstools, faerie houses, animals and benches all await discovery at the side of the trail. After approximately 1,300 metres, or 2/3 of the way along this outward leg, you’ll find a good sized gravel “pull-out” to the side of the trail, complete with benches and a picnic table. This is

an ideal spot to grab a snack, or to point out to kids as the intended lunch-stop on the return journey. Judging distance is hard in such an environment, and perhaps that’s a good thing as a walk in the woods should, where possible, be an escape from the pressures of time. For those interested in keeping track, another two hundred metres or so brings you to a driveway crossing. This allows a left turn to shorten the circular route by just over a kilometre. One thing worth noting is that anyone relying on the high level of engineering seen on this first section will effectively be obliged to plan an “out and back” trip. Accessing the other sections of trail requires the ability to cover a total distance of around 5km on a mix of well made trail, logging road and twisty, rooty singletrack. For that reason, walkers, runners and reasonably competent off-road cyclists will be best suited to a circuit. In most cases, people follow the gravelled trail to the end before choosing one of 3 options; Return by the same route on the fully manicured trail, cut through a mix of singletrack, damp hydro clearcut and river gully to access the rougher, North Loop (which we will cover in a later feature) or, as I am about to describe, swing West then South on the Nile Creek FSR. After the care with which the gravel trail was constructed, there’s almost a feeling of culture shock coming out of the woods and following a road so comparatively lacking in aesthetic value. For many, a trip through the trees and clearcuts like this would deliver a sense of being in nature, but in this instance, it feels like nothing more than a utilitarian way of getting back to our start point. Happily, there is clear evidence of tree planting, alongside the inevitable falling, so hopefully a more natural feel will develop as the years pass. For many, this may be the closest they have come to active falling. The devastated clearings and piles of stripped tree trunks, although small by comparison to large operations, may bring home the impact such industry can have on areas which currently attract tourists and other leisure users. It’s almost a clear shot of 2 1/2km to the entrance to the flagged trailhead that will bring us back to our start-point. Only a driveway crossing and a couple of logging spurs intersect this main road. Keep following straight and eventually you’ll encounter a distinct tunnel of trees. There will be flagging and a small RDN sign on your left (the sign was on the ground, propped against a tree when we passed this point.)

What to take: Always carry a whistle (I have one on my keys and another attached to my pack.) Check weather forecast and choose appropriate clothing and footwear for your activity. This is easy terrain, but the South Loop described can take several hours, especially for family groups or those walking slowly. Remember to bring any prescription medications, snacks, water and camera. If setting out in the evening bring a flashlight or headlamp. This is a perfect area to pack a picnic. It is a good idea to carry a personal 1st Aid kit and to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club opened last weekend with Mayor Chris Burger delivering the first bowl of the 2014 season. The pitch was busy all weekend as members took part in their first tournament of the season on Sunday. Saturday marked the official opening and members played after Burger’s opening shot. “It’s going to be an exciting year for the club once again,” said spokesperson Carol Bucyk. “We always have a great time, regardless of the weather. Not only that but we’re hosting the Canadian National Mixed Pairs Championship in September as well, so everyone is gearing up for a big year here.” On Sunday, the club held the Mixed Triples Opening Tournament under ominous skies.
