Toastmasters class helps kids increase communication skills

Caelen St. Bright has seen a change in her daughter. Her 10-year-old’s confidence and comfort speaking in public is growing day-by-day. Sherber said giving youth the confidence to have a voice is an important step on the road to a brighter future for them. The organization, which now boasts more than 13,000 clubs around the world, and more than 40 in Greater Victoria, can also help youth succeed – and Sherber hopes his volunteering to teach the program makes a difference in the children’s lives, just as the mentorship he received growing up helped him. “There are people who profoundly affected me as a child, whether they spent one minute with me or a teacher that spent a year with me,” Sherber said. “Young people need communication and leaderships skills. (This is) teaching them life skills that will last them a lifetime.”

The new monthly lease payments, over a five-year lease period will be $1,760 per month or ($21,120 annually).

Teachers across the province began job action, targeting administrative duties on Wednesday – action that will have little effect on students, and if the president of the Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association is right, it will end soon. “I don’t see us staying in this Stage 1 very long,” said Benula Larsen. “Either we’re going to get something or we’re going to increase. For parents, for public, for the teachers, we don’t want to start September again without knowing what’s happening. Or just sitting at the table and hoping? We can’t keep hoping. We have to do something.” The move comes in response to a March 6 B.C. Teachers’ Federation vote, in which 89 per cent of members waiting on longstalled contract negotiations supported potential job action, the first since a three-day walk out in March 2012. Hannah said she is grateful for that mentorship and already feels more comfortable in public settings and hopes to use the tools she develops now when she enters the job force. “I enjoy it. It helps me with my public speaking and makes me more confident,” she said. “It has gotten much easier than the first day when I was quite nervous.” The programming has also benefitted her siblings, both of whom are also involved and Hannah plans to continue working on the craft moving forward and recommends it for people of all ages. “I think it would really help if they are nervous or not confident enough in doing stuff,” she said. “I think it would help a lot of other kids with their public speaking, and keep going (up) from there.” alim@vicnews.com

Refinery on B.C’s coast will cut greenhouse gases This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime. The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the BC coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together David with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed. The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits: There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new design. This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery. An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day

Imports provide most sizzle in New York There was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show. It seems the Big Four shot their lightning bolts at the preceding Detroit and Los Angeles auto extravaganzas and left it to the import manufacturers to dazzle here. Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano. The mid-size model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-generation. The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerang-shaped tail lights ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals. Inside, up to five passengers can expect more of a luxury ride than they might have enjoyed in the outgoing version – heated and cooled front seats will impress those upfront. It incorporates design touches now appearing in sibling models, including a deeper grille that more resembles an upmarket Lexus. Interior materials are upgraded and a large central display matches the design trend of its competitors. Two trims are added; a sporty XSE with some luxury touches and a Hybrid SE. Toyota sticks with its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, and 3.5-litre, six-cylinder engines plus its Hybrid Synergy Drive. Hyundai would like to put a serious dent in the Toyota Camry success story with its own mid-size sedan – the redesigned Sonata. It’s likely the introduction of a sharp looking Sonata in 2011 helped prompt Toyota into taking a serious look at upping the ante in the Camry. Other competitors have also risen to the challenge. Now the seventh-generation, newly styled, sharper looking 2015 Sonata raises the bar again with improved ride and handling plus advanced driver assistance and safety

Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear is vital to your safety. Just ask someone who has had a spill. Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concussion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed at her condition. It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life. She was wearing leathers, gloves, protective boots, and a helmet. Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point. Those who have experienced an accident weren’t thinking, “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops.” When I ride, I’m in full garb. Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately. I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it. Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road. That’s a helmet. If you’re not going to invest any money in anything else, protect your noggin. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet. Make sure it fits properly. Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly. I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you. You only have one head. Use it and protect it. Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile. There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent. Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case. Some jackets come with armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t. I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in. Pants: Leather, textile and

Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted. I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection. Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots. That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather footwear that at least covers your anklebone. What’s great about the industry now is the availability of cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protected. Bonus. Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists. Some gloves also have reinforced points with carbon fibre to prevent further damage. Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove. Too much room can cause blisters. Too little

room cuts off circulation. Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This material is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So you can take them off or put them on when needed. Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt. Wearing elbow and knee pads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles. Along with their helmet. Accessories: If you want added peace of mind, that’s available, too. I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care. A full chest protector is also available. I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii. They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world. While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought. Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right? One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected. With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks. My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition! Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.” Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition. Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle. I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school. As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition. Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold! Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more. Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that. All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

Competition tough for racer Bill Okell sits in fifth place for points

ust two races in, Bill Okell is off to a good start in his bid to qualify for the Sports Car Club of America’s national championships. Driving a modified MG Midget in the F production class, Okell posted fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the events held at Thunderhill Raceway Park road course near Sacramento, Calif. The results left him sitting fifth in the point standings for the SCCA’s Western Conference, heading into this weekend’s races in Los Angeles. “Every time we went out we just got faster and better,” said Okell, who was invited to drive a car owned by fellow racer Chuck Horton. Both are under the umbrella of the San Francisco-based Huffaker Engineering team. “I think they were content that I could be competitive and brought the car back in one piece and didn’t wreck it,” Okell said. The conference schedule lists six race weekends with two races each. Drivers need a minimum of four race starts to be eligible for nationals – known as the run-offs – and the top 10 in the standings qualify. Community leaders share their favourite teacher stories Don Descoteau News staff

With the benefit of time and life experience, most adults can remember at least one grade school teacher who stood out among the rest and impacted their life for the better. Mine were in the field of music (thank you, Keith Descoteau Fraser) and phys-ed (likewise, Ed Ashmore), men who laid the groundwork for lifelong interests in both areas. In continuing our series celebrating grade school teachers and the critical role they play in human development, we asked community leaders to share some of their favourite experiences with educators from their past. We hope their stories resonate with you and prompt you to think about teachers from your past. Tania Miller, music director, Victoria Symphony Orchestra – I grew up in a farming community of 1,000 people (Foam Lake, Sask.). In high school I had a social studies teacher named Ian Cooper who had an incredible passion for people and history. He had a big impact on me for the way he taught us about being a member of society and passionately follow-

ing our dreams,. He also started a band at school and taught everybody how to play guitar. There was that side of him that embraced the arts, which appealed to me, but he taught us to be passionate in a variety of different ways. I think the profound thing that he did was he Miller made us want to be the best we could be. As a result of his impact and others,’ I’d say probably 80 per cent of our class went to university. Guy Dauncey, Victoria author, sustainable futurist – “I was at a boarding school in England (from age 13 to 18), and the music master there, his name was Tony Brown, was by far the greatest inspiration

to me. Not only did he give us the greatest musical education, on Friday evenings he would invite us over for tea and talk philosophy with us. He would ask things like, ‘Do we have free will?’ and however we would answer, he’d proceed to point out precisely why the Dauncey opposite was true. The lesson was, you’ve got to think things out for yourselves. We didn’t have any other classes that went remotely near (talking about) philosophy or the big questions of life, and the realization that the big questions of life don’t have black and white answers.” Lillian Szpak, City of Langford councillor – I was an Air Force brat and we moved around every two to three years. My Grade 7 teacher at RCAF Centralia (Ontario) was Mr. Heimrich. He stands out for me because he encouraged me to write creatively and to write poetry. He Szpak treated me like an adult, as if I had something to say that could affect others. He really shaped me that way. He was very candid and would share his own experience and joke about

what was going on at home, so he was real to me. Teachers in my era were authoritative, but he was so different. Having the freedom to write what you want and how you want, and to share that without being judged, was really outside of the box. Frank Leonard, mayor of Saanich – I attended nine schools in my 12 school years since my father’s employer transferred us around B.C. I often didn’t get involved in school activities since I hardly knew anyone. However, my senior high Leonard school years at Mount View High on Carey Road in Saanich were terrific and I attribute that to principal Don Smyth and vice-principal Ken Brown. They ‘recruited’ me into activities like student council, refereeing the student/teacher soccer game, reading the morning announcements and running the Miss Mount View pageant. I loved being active, yet it was the support of Don and Ken that made it happen. I credit them with the experiences that gave me the confidence to later become involved in our community. set by Peter Mason has always resonated with me. I remember him saying, ‘One year I’m going to take a class of students to Mount Everest’ and I remember it reverberated through the school. People had to think about ‘what is Everest?’ It’s the highest peak of human achieve- Olsen ment. They went, and I remember he came back and said, ‘I’m going to build a climbing wall,’ and he was one of the people responsible for the development of Boulders Climbing Gym, which continues to have a huge impact on our community and on our kids in Central Saanich. He’s always had a very, very significant impact on me. It’s about setting a goal, no matter how impossible it may seem to be, then going out and getting it. Music conservatory to celebrate half-century of history in Victoria Daniel Palmer News staff

The Victoria Conservatory of Music marks 50 years in the community this year with two events to benefit the institution. Danisha Drury and Amy McGeachy, known individually for their design talents and together for appearances on CHEK TV’s Design District, will make homeowners feel safe delving into these trends of 2014. The duo hosts Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Design Trends for 2014 talks during this year’s April 25 to 27 Home Expo. “We’ll talk a lot about design in general and accessories,” says McGeachy of the second presentation. “That’s where people really spend the majority of their money in renovations. It has to be functional and have good form, but then you do want it to look nice and have style.” Wallpaper is a top trend they’ll hit on during presentations at the show. “Some of the paper they’re making now, it’s so beautiful, easy to apply and easy to remove and they’re gorgeous. On a bright April afternoon, Shel Suzuki and Brooklyn the bulldog soak in the sun on the deck of their Fisherman’s Wharf float home. A harbour taxi packed with passengers cruises by and just up the dock, tourists hold up iPads and cameras to take a piece of this scene home. Inside Suzuki’s kitchen, a two-man work crew is in the final stages of installing the kitchen cabinets back around the hot water heater – that unexpectedly gave out earlier in the day – because today they learned that the cabinets were actually built around the tank. Just another example of how float home life, particularly life in Suzuki’s ultra compact, 347 square-foot floating “hobbit house” is just like life on land, with a twist. “It’s like any other home,” Suzuki says. “It’s just maintenance. But you can’t find people who’ve worked on float homes before, so this is their first time working on a really small space.” Suzuki was drawn to the close community following a 2010 visit to Victoria, when along with friends, they spotted the float home, which happened to be for sale, and posed for a photo in front of it. Suzuki was living in Winnipeg at the time and was taken by the copper-roofed float home, dubbed Ziggaratus by previous owners. “Within two months I bought the place and moved out here – without seeing the inside at all. It was just a gut feeling. I saw the front and thought: ‘I think I could live here.’” Suzuki’s story is a common one

among the 33-home community. One Edmonton import made a deal to purchase his home from the parking lot when he learned it was up for sale during a visit to Victoria. Before Suzuki would experience the warmweather joys that generally attract new residents to the lifestyle: kayaking off the deck and riding the water taxi downtown with Brooklyn – they had to experience a winter on the water without adequate weatherproofing. “Because I came in January and didn’t know what the weather was like, I didn’t have a fireplace. I had single pane windows that weren’t great. I had doors that didn’t fit. It was a very cold winter – so cold I had to sleep with a pillow case on my head.” The following month came a tsunami warning from the earthquake in Japan. The float homes were evacuated within five minutes in the middle of the night. Last Febru-

ary, a homeowner to the community couldn’t sleep through the sound of their wind chimes, and when he got out of bed to silence the noise, he spotted his neighbour’s home floating towards the Inner Harbour, secured by just one rope. Eventually, the residents woke up, heeded the advice to stay inside, and with the help of several neighbours, secured the home once more. Suzuki simply laughs at the few close calls they’ve been through and reiterates the need to check and tighten lines regularly. Maintenance costs, such as regular upkeep of the float on which the home is built, are in line with those of living on land. The cost of moorage, paid by squarefootage, of the base is comparable to strata fees for condo owners. Guy Crozier, president elect of the Victoria Real Estate Board sold float homes at Westbay Marine Village in Esquimalt when the community launched in the early 2000s.

The homes have always had a romantic appeal, the Sleepless in Seattle effect, Crozier says. “A lot of float homes, you can park your car in a covered parking lot, walk down the dock to your float home and jump on your paddle board or in your canoe and go out right from your back door. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to have.” Since Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t gated like Westbay, residents are in constant contact with tourists drawn to the lifestyle. “Sometimes in the summer, we’ll leave chalk out here and people will write where they’re from. You’ll come home and see a hundred different places in the world,” Suzuki says. “Advice I give people, that if you want to live down here and it’s your gut to live down here, then you should do it.” arts@mondaymag.com
