Two of Mission’s most dedicated volunteers are being recognized by the District of Mission next month. Ron Leger will be named a Freeman of the City, and Bob Ingram will receive this year’s Citizen of the Year Award. Both men were surprised by the recognition. “I was stunned for a week,” said Leger, who received the

news from the mayor a couple of weeks ago. “It’s quite overwhelming.” “It’s the furthest thing from your mind when you get involved (in the community),” said Ingram. Leger has lived in Mission since 1983 and has been involved in numerous service clubs and committees to improve the community. He took on his biggest challenge five years ago when he began an effort to build a new food bank

at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Seventh Avenue. “The award is probably because of the work I’ve done with the food bank building,” said Leger, who works as an accountant in Mission. Leger has had a desire to help people who are less fortunate than he is since he was a young boy when he and some friends raised money and donated it to nuns who helped look after the poor. Volunteering wasn’t some-

thing he picked up from his parents, or learned from a role model; it was simply a desire, said Leger, who added his inspiration comes from the Bible. But mostly, Leger says he enjoys working with people, and that’s what will keep him involved in the community. Ingram also credits his fellow volunteers with helping him achieve the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award. “I work with great people and any one of them could be the

He moved with his wife to Mission nine years ago from New Westminster, and his reputation as a volunteer followed him. Not every council member believes there is a problem at municipal hall with staff departures, but all have agreed to look into hiring a consultant to examine the issue. Earlier this month, The Record reported 34 full-time employees, including nine senior managers, have

resigned from their positions at the district in the past two and a half years, while 13 have retired. Last week Coun. Nelson Tilbury said he believes staff are leaving because of “micromanaging from the CAO (chief administrative officer) and bullying and berating from council.” At a committee of the whole meeting on Monday, Tilbury made a

motion directing staff to research the cost, and propose terms of reference for an external consultant to examine and evaluate staffing issues and the operational capabilities at the district. “I’m not comfortable with statements saying (staff departures) are not a problem,” said Tilbury, referring to comments made from other councillors.

“I want to … hire a consultant to do an evaluation of staffing at city hall and just see what the general morale is. This should be a good place to work.” Tilbury only managed to add the item to the agenda Monday afternoon after a half hour discussion on late items. Mayor Ted Adlem said that according to council’s procedural

bylaw, any councillor who wants to add an item to the agenda must do so in writing in advance of the meeting. Tilbury and Coun. Jenny Stevens argued the policy has never been enforced before, and Coun. Jewell noted the purpose of adopting the agenda at the beginning of a meeting is to allow changes. Coun. Tony Luck said he was not aware of the policy

either. Couns. Dave Hensman and Larry Nundal concurred with the mayor. “I can’t make decisions without knowing the background,” said Nundal, who argued the issue should have been discussed in-camera (closed meeting) because it relates to employees. “I’m a little annoyed because this keeps

coming up … This is getting nasty.” Nundal, who threatened to walk out of the meeting, said council’s role is to govern the district, not to act as the administrator. “I’m not going to put the CAO on the hot seat.” Tilbury responded that this was brought forward because some CONTINUED ON 13

Do you remember an older man on a bike who appeared wherever you looked? “We saw him in Maple Ridge!” “We saw him with his bike in a lineup to get on the ferry to Nanaimo!”

Willy arrived in Canada in 1947 and worked in construction on oil and logging sites. He was the hardest worker known and never out of work a day (until he found he was giving too much to the Government income tax so took time off to go to Mexico.) He came from Denmark and had never married (one story was he had to climb out of the bathroom window of a widow’s house who had asked him in for dinner.) At age sixty-nine he met Doris Paterson - a Mission artist and writer who was sixty-five and had ten children!! She was divorced and opposite to Willy in every way. They fell in love and were together for twenty-four years, officially marrying in the year 2001. Doris wrote a small book “Willy and Me” about how they compromised in their togetherness and the book was published by Portage and Main Press of Winnipeg. Two sequel books were combined with this and titled “The artist and the Bicycle man.” After his ninetieth birthday he was taken to E.C.U. because of Parkinson’s disease - kicking and raging against being confined to Pleasantview. Willy died when he was ninety-three years old. He passed away on April 11th 2014, leaving his wife Doris, brother Vagn/Ellen and his nieces in Sweden. His family will be ever grateful for the loving care he received at Pleasantview.

I think you were both very lucky to have had each other. I am both sad and relieved by the news. I would say he was a man of conviction and knew at the end, life in a care home was not what he wanted and just let go. Good for Willy!”

He slept on a garbage bag in the bush on the way there because he didn’t believe in spending money on a motel. He loved being in nature, picking up discarded bottles on the way. In the mornings he had coffee at MacDonalds where people told him they admired him for being active and he was a role model for them.

2014 Community Service Awards A total of 19 community awards will be given out at a ceremony on May 31. In addition to Citizen of the Year and Freeman of the City, featured in this issue of The Record, awards recipients are: • The 2014 Citizen of the Year is Bob Ingram. Medical pot: Confusion reigns

It’s difficult to imagine a more botched rollout than the policies and procedures surrounding the use of “medical marijuana.” For years municipal governments have sought clarity on an edict, set down not by elected officials, but by the courts. That decision – that the federal government must allow limited access to marijuana for medical purposes – has garnered nothing but confusion, regulator chaos and a virtual cottage industry of illegal activity. The federal government’s recent attempt to patch the gaping holes left in the original “plan” is off the rails again following a recent Supreme Court injunction. That injunction is now being appealed by the federal government. Consequently, people who had been allowed to grow their own marijuana, but were told to stop by April 1, have no idea if, or for how long, they can pro-

duce their own drug. More so, the municipal governments, police and public safety officials expected to enforce or monitor these operations are once again scrambling. Ever since the courts allowed the personal cultivation of marijuana for medical purposes, there has been confusion. Federal privacy laws prevented local governments from knowing where these cottage pot farms existed. That lack of clarity and accountability opened the system to abuse. The new federal regulations were supposed to change that. But once again, confusion prevails. It fails the communities in which these lucrative and potentially illegal operations exist, and it fails the people who count on medical marijuana relief. Surely we can do better. – Black Press

Huge and growing problem It is abundantly clear to me there is a crisis of leadership and management occurring at the District of Mission, starting with council and extending to the chief administrative officer. The resulting exodus of senior staff is a huge problem. As a former senior manager in the organization, I know virtually all of the people who have left. To describe their departure as “resistance to change” is self-serving and an insult to the good work they have done. In my opinion, bullying and micromanaging are symptoms of insecurity and lack of true leadership. Unfailingly, these tactics destroy morale, innovation, and desire. My experience of the district’s management and union staff was always that they

are predominantly innovative, industrious, and committed servants of the people. They understand their job is to provide good service to their community. It will take a long time and great expense to replace the skill and experience of those who have left, and those who will be leaving as soon as they can find other positions. Their loss negatively impacts on proper administration and governing, planning and development in the community, proper regulatory enforcement, and good management and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure (worth hundreds of millions of dollars). Mission’s had a reputation as a good and viable employer. That is now in question, and will make hiring equally competent staff even more difficult than it already

is. But according to the CAO, there is no hurry to replace them and they will all be replaced with far superior and less costly versions. In my experience, that is a pipe dream. (For the mayor) to rationalize this huge and growing problem as nothing more than “a resistance to change” is pure folly. But it is not just the bullying and micromanaging that are a problem. Council’s inability to conduct itself in a mature and respectful way, either with each other or with staff, is very troubling. The conduct of these elected representatives has been ghastly, and frankly embarrassing for Mission’s citizens. Is there any valid reason for a vote of non-confidence in a mayor? What does this say about everyone involved in

such activity, including the mayor? More importantly, what does it indicate about the ability of these people to conduct the public business, when they literally behave worse than school children? Fair and open debate is both welcome and necessary, but the boorish behaviour of most of these individuals is almost stunning. For all of this, shame on all of you. C l e a r ly some s i g n i f i c a n t behavioural change is required, and soon. Failing that, the positions that need to be changed, and the people who need to be replaced, are obvious. Dudley Cox will be inducted in NLAC Hall of Honour Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Mission resident Dudley Cox will be inducted in Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s (NLAC) “Fortis Properties” Hall of Honour later this month. Cox, 79, was “completely surprised,” when he heard the news. “I have no idea where it came from,” he told The Record. Cox has lived in Mission for the past 15 years and is an active member of the local theatre company, Opening Nite Theatre. He left Newfoundland 38 years ago and has not been back since. Now, almost 40 years

DUDLEY COX later, the NLAC is recognizing Cox for his work and accomplishments in advancing the theatre scene in the East Coast community. Cox studied arts in university and took an interest in theatre. He saw plays in Montreal and became involved in the arts scene when he moved to Newfoundland in the mid-1960s. Cox resided in St. John’s for about 12 years

during a time known as the Newfoundland Cultural Revolution. “We all got swept up in the arts,” he recalled. “It was marvellous.” According to a biography provided by the NLAC, “Cox was responsible for considerable cornerstone developments in Newfoundland and Labrador theatre arts.” Cox taught drama and worked to improve resources for the theatre community. He was a member of the St. John’s Players theatre company and founded the Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company in 1972 which brought shows to youth around

the province. Cox also helped establish the provincial high school drama festival. Cox learned a lot about the business while he was in Newfoundland and has taken on many roles. “I tried being an actor, but I wasn’t very good at it,” he said. He moved on to directing and writing screenplays, and found he enjoyed both. He is also skilled at designing sets for shows. Cox looks forward to returning to Newfoundland next week to accept the award at the NLAC’s 29th annual arts awards ceremony on April 26.

ONT’s latest show Proof on stage April 25 Opening Nite Theatre’s production of Proof will be hitting the local stage beginning on April 25. The play is set on the back porch of an academic’s house in Hyde Park, near the University of Chicago campus. Catherine, played by Krista Drury, is a young woman who has put the last four years of her life on hold to care for her brilliant and very sick father, Robert (played by Randy Holmes), who in his heyday made ground-breaking advances in the field of mathematics.

drawer in which Hal discovers a brilliant mathematical proof. Both Hal and Claire are shocked and less than supportive when Catherine claims authorship. As events unfold, haunted by her father’s genius and demons, Catherine must summon the courage to face her own, and to tread the waters of potential madness lightly. Proof is as a story about trust and betrayal, and of love and loyalty. The show contains mature themes, mature play, and course lan-

guage, and may not be suitable for young audiences. Proof was written by David Auburn and directed by Mission’s Mahara Sinclaire. The Fraser Valley Autism Society has launched its first iPad grant program. The program was created to provide support for individuals with autism who are struggling with the challenges around communication, organization and fine motor skills. heard about Ingram’s move, he called his counterparts at Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) and told them about Ingram’s work and encouraged the group to reach out to him. They did, and Ingram is still involved with MACL today, serving as president. Ingram is currently involved with 14 organizations and committees in Mission. He is president of the Mission Seniors Centre Association, president of the Mission Community Services Society, and chair of the Mission Seniors Centre Task Force, which is working to establish a seniors’ centre in Mission. “If I’m going to get involved, I’m going to get involved,” said Ingram. “If people ask for help, I will help them to the best of my ability.” Ingram says he enjoys meeting people and learning from where they come. One of his strengths, he says, is bringing people together to work towards a goal. “Believe in yourself, and trust in others,” he said. The Community Service Awards ceremony will take place Saturday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Clarke Theatre. More funding for interpretive forest Province and district contribute another $150,000 to project The province and District of Mission are contributing another $150,000 to develop Missionâ€™s Interpretive Forest. I guess you could say I was addicted. Only my drug of choice wasn’t coke or meth. No - it was the thrill of getting away with it all. And the easy cash, of course. Throwing the camper into that last deal was a great marketing idea. And, like last time, I decided to branch out again. There’s so much more than just cars! This time I decided to go with a motorcycle. I purchased it off the internet – I guess you could call it a curber-to-curber transaction. Oh, of course I knew every trick in the book by now. The seller gave me my old story and said that he was the real owner. Did I care? Not a chance. It was a nice Harley. And, it was a steal. I knew I could flip it for more. Why? Because I was a better marketer. But I needed to do it fast. And, I had to make sure I had a buyer that was naive enough not to do a lien check through carproof.com, or the province (bcregistryservices. gov.bc.ca). As usual, I put up a generic, one-line Craigslist ad. With a price like mine, I had a buyer within an hour. I made sure the Harley looked its best. I polished it until it sparkled and filled it with gas. Hey, what’s a few bucks? Then I ran into a small problem. I found out that my seller was the real owner. Wow. But he sold me a vehicle that was about to be repossessed.

Fortunately, he was in such a hurry that he didn’t make me do the transfer – so it was still in his name. No big deal. Bridging* was my friend. I just used his name and hoped my buyer would never ask me for ID. And I was right. The buyer smelled a bargain and took the bait like fish. He thought I was the fool! No lien check, no ID check. Just cash. I was home free, again. And the best part? When the bailiff came for the motorcycle, he didn’t even know my name.

*Bridging – A trick that curbers use to keep their identity secret. Curbers will pay more for a vehicle from an unscrupulous wholesaler or broker if they are not required to immediately put the vehicle in their name. This keeps their name out of the vehicle registry and makes them impossible to locate when deals go bad. Breaking the law is never a concern for them.

driveway Grand Cherokee slightly over priced and not a long enough track record There is a big premium to get this engine over a V6, or lower trim level V8 gasoline versions, but there are some compelling reasons to choose it. Fuel economy is number one. This heavy truck is rated at 9.8 L/100km in the city and only 7.0L on the highway. With aggressive driving and mostly city, I averaged 12L. I did notice on highway runs that the fuel economy improved radically. The towing capacity of the EcoDiesel is the same as the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 at 7,200 lbs, but this truck gets substantially better fuel economy. For those who drive a lot without a

trailer, the improvement in fuel economy is something to factor in. If you don’t drive a lot each year, the diesel option might not be worth the added cost.

Verdict Chrysler considers the Jeep Grand Cherokee a premium offering but I would not put this on par with the Mercedes ML, BMW X5, Audi Q5 or a very nicely equipped VW Touareg. It is a very nice truck with as much diesel power and efficiency as the competition but the German brands have been at the whole diesel thing a lot longer and are a known entity in the market. The Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel would be a very

easy choice if it were about $50,000, not $58,000. If you drive a lot or tow, the diesel might be worth it, but as it stands now, the already capable and luxurious gasoline versions are less expensive and come with all the regular Grand Cherokee goodness.

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. LECHNER, Edwin (Ed) Jan 21, 1943 - Feb 28, 2014 Died suddenly at home with his boots on. A popular horseman, mechanic, sportsman, and friend to everyone he met. Ed was predeceased by his father George, mother Susan, brother George, and his ex wife Carol. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Taylor, his daughters Cheri Cooper & Tracy Lechner as well as his 4 grandchildren Natasha Cooper, Chelsea Cooper, Chantelle Campbell, and Cole Campbell. The family invites friends to a celebration of his life to be held at the farm on April 27th from noon til 4:00PM.

STRANGWARD, Lloyd Louis Lloyd Louis Strangward aged 82 years passed away peacefully with his family at his side on April 13, 2014. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Cherie, Daughter Debbie, Son Randy (Linda), Son Doug (Tammy), Grandchildren Shane (Laura), Jesse, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends that he loved dearly but are too numerous to list. He is predeceased by his Father Henry, Mother Maria, and Brother Harry as well as many other aunts, uncles, relatives and friends that will ensure he has a warm and fitting home coming. Lloyd realized many accomplishments and adventures during his life but by far his biggest treasures were his wife, children, grandsons and numerous family and friends. His loving, caring nature and infinite generosity will live on with us forever. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 11 am at St. Josephs Parish, 32550 7th Ave in Mission followed by a celebration of life at the Ruskin Community Hall on 96th Ave & 284th St, in Ruskin (Maple Ridge) at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Lloyds name.

DANIEL, HARMENY 1958 - 2014 Harmeny Daniel, nee Maw, Vissers, artist, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and aunt (Honey). Harmeny’s warmth and compassion were unlimited; each day she fulfilled her desire to make the world a better place. Harmeny was immensely proud of her two children, Ian and Leifka Vissers. She taught her children to be strong, independent, and always ensured that they felt loved. Harmeny had an exceptional amount of love for her siblings; to Jann, Colleen, Patrick, and Thorrin she was a constant source of encouragement, love, and humour. Harmeny is survived by her mother, Jean Maw, whose unwavering support has been with her through every one of life’s adventures. While Harmeny was born in the lower mainland, she was drawn to the Yukon by its raw beauty, and it is here she found her true home.
