East Kootenay residents are going to miss one of the region’s most colourful personalities and renowned adventurers, who passed away recently. Uli Korb climbed his final mountain on the evening of April 4, 2014 at the FW Green Home in Cranbrook. It was an ambitious assault that began about two years

prior with a spot on his lung. In spite of that, some of his friends remember a pleasant climb-outing with him up Mause Creek Ridge to Tanglefoot in 2012, and also skiing cross -country loops with him in 2013 near his home in Wycliffe, with the idyllic view west of the airport.

perience, because now for nationals there are talent scouts and people who discover people there,” she said. “Canada’s modelling agencies are there.” She said at the B.C. pageant there were some things to get used to. “We walked around in heels for 12 hours a day, and were taught how to dance in them,” she said. “It was painful.”

Society seeking team of Kyrie Jackson volunteers for Rails to Trails Continued from page 1

She was awarded the title of Miss Teen Kootenays 2014, so she will be representing the Kootenays in Toronto at the nationals. “I was the highest fundraiser for the Cardiac for Kids in all of B.C. and so far second or third in Canada, with $1,100,” she said, adding that there are still a couple provinces that haven’t completed their Miss Teen Canada portion. She raised the money by selling theatrical movie posters and selling tickets for prize draws. Kyrie was in the mall every weekend through February. She raised the funds in only three weeks. She said a lot of local businesses donated prizes for the event and the support from everyone was fantastic. Now Kyrie is working towards the national Miss Teen Canada competition, and raising funds for a new charity, Free the Children. “It’s quite an amazing story,” her mom, Judy, said. “Basically this 12-year-old boy started this organization. He saw an article in a Toronto paper (about)

this young boy standing up for his rights in education and he ended up getting shot, just to get a basic education and get out of slavery.” Kyrie explained that the contestant who raises the most in Canada or who wins Miss Teenage Canada can go on one of the charity’s volunteer excursions. Kyrie will have six weeks to raise funds for the charity once she starts her campaign. She has a couple events coming up as part of raising funds for the charity as well. The United Church is helping to sponsor her by hosting a garage sale on April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On April 27, the Ladies Fraternal Order of Eagles 3032 will be hosting a pancake breakfast for Kyrie’s charity from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook. The North Star Rails to Trails Society will hold its first annual general meeting (AGM) on April 23, and director Al Skucas is encouraging users of the trail to get involved. Opened in 2010, the North Star Rails to Trails is a paved 26-kilometre path between Cranbrook and Kimberley on what used to be railway tracks. Canadian Pacific Railway donated the land to the cities the path runs between. The project is the result of a collaborative effort between the two cities, Canadian Pacific Railway, the Province of

Uli was born in what was formerly East Germany in 1939 and grew up there. He crossed over a minefield to West Germany in 1963, when people were routinely shot for trying this daring move. He came to the Kootenays via Prince George in 1978 and spent many years as a stone mason in this region. In his years here he helped many local residents ascend Fisher Peak, having made some 78 ascents himself.

Uli is survived by two sons, Lars and Olaf, their mother Rosmarie, daughter-in-law Amanda and two grandchildren, Zane and Ryen. Uli was a lively, imposing and unique individual with a great enthusiasm for life’s offerings. Like most of us, he had some rough edges, but his charm and wit made him fascinating and colourful, such that encounters with him were always memorable. He probably knew, and was known by, more people in the Kootenays than most and it is doubtful that he ever met a stranger. There also minor maintenance jobs that will need to be done each year. The cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley are responsible for capital infrastructure for the trail. Already, lovers of the popular trail are pitching in to maintain it, Skucas said, with volunteers recently taking a broom to parts of the trail in Wycliffe affected by sloughing over the

Conservation property an important link The Nature Trust’s latest purchase at Wigwam Flats links several conservation areas near Elko

The purchase of a five-acre property south of Elko by the Nature Trust of B.C. might seem small, but it represents a significant conservation effort. “It’s such an important purchase. It’s really small in terms of the size of the property, but it’s in such an important strategic location,” said Rob Neil, the trust’s Kootenay conservation land manager. The Nature Trust announced last week that it has purchased the last remaining piece of privately owned property on Wigwam Flats, south of Elko and north of the confluence of the Wigwam and Elko Rivers. The five-acre property was purchased from the Tregilges family, which has had a connection to the property since the 1930s. It concludes a 37year history for the Nature Trust, which pur-

So we are looking into the future and hopefully we can get there.” In the meantime, the Nature Trust is encouraging light use of the property for recreation. “We do encourage people to come there and enjoy everything that property has to offer. Our emphasis is not on recreation – we like people to leave a light footprint. So we encourage people to walk there or ride a horse there. Certainly people are part of the equation in terms of long-term management,” said Neil. “We are not setting it up just to protect it and exclude people from enjoying all the characteristics and attributes of our properties.”

Caldwell Road residents face rising waters of Elizabeth Lake Bar ry Co ulter

The residents of Caldwell Road on the western edge of Cranbrook are watching with alarm as water encroaches on their properties. Eight households line the frontage road beside the highway leaving town to the southwest. Their backyards are acres of pastureland, which are homes for horses, places for car collections and recreational vehicles, outbuildings and barns, even storage for friends’ large personal items. Farther beyond is Elizabeth Lake, a famous wetland and wildlife sanctuary. Deb Kopak, one of the residents who has lived on Caldwell Road for 25 years, says a weir was put in place in the 1930s. A new weir was installed two years ago, and ever since then, the waters have risen into their property, getting worse every year, she said. “It has never, ever been so bad,” Kopak said. “We’ve always had a little bit of water, but this is ridiculous. The water is literally rising by the hour.” Kopak owns five horses, which are stabled in her backyard. Also, she stores a motorhome and several travel trailers for friends. These vehicles were trapped and surrounded by water, though she was eventually able to get them out of the mud up on to drier land. Kopak has also had to evacuate her horses as the rising water flooded out the stable, and left them roaming the pasture in water up to their shins. “I’ve never had to relocate horses before,” Kopak said. “I can’t even get to my barn. Thank God for good friends (who can take the horses).” Kopak’s neighbours are in the same boat. One neighbour brings in firewood by the semiload, for example, Kopak said. That wood is all under water. And Jerry Tames’ has a valuable collection of classic cars, also trapped, which he is

The pump on the right is hors de combat. trying to get up onto his lawn. But the ground has become so saturated that getting a tractor in is difficult. Tames says toilets aren’t flushing properly, and he’s worried about sewage backing up into his 45-foot well. “This has always been farmland,” Tames said. “It’s never been a swamp. The bird sanctuary has gradually been getting bigger and bigger.” Tames used the example of what used to be the Silver Ridge sawmill many years ago, on the eastern side of the lake. “It’s now underwater,” he said. The situation is made more complicated by the fact that various levels of government oversee different aspects. Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski said that three levels of government — the Province, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) and the City of Cranbrook — have met several times over recent days to discuss options. Elizabeth Lake is fed from the west by underground springs and creeks, including a creek from Jimsmith Lake and Silver Creek. The water sources feeding the creek are in the purview of the RDEK. But the lake drains to the northeast into Cranbrook to Joseph Creek, via a creek/culvert system. Water from the lake

goes through a culvert under Wattsville Road, into a creek which runs past the old waterslide site and the Heritage Motel. In recent days, the City has had big pumps out behind Elizabeth Lake Lodge, pumping water out of the lake, across Wattsville Road and into the creek, to help keep the lake level down. Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski said that as of Tuesday, the City has been pumping water out of the east end of the lake for over a week now. “We have burned out two pumps, one is still running, and we are trying to get two more out of the Elk Valley,” Stetski said in an email. He said the City is doing all that it can to reduce the water level in Elizabeth Lake without also putting downstream Cranbrook residents at risk of flooding. “The City can only take as much water out of the lake as the downstream channels can handle, as we do not want to put any city residents or property at risk,” he added. The creek crosses under the highway, and runs along past the Columbia Greenhouses and the FasGas station, before going underground past the Prestige. The creek re-emerges in the little park between the Prestige and the railway museum, before going underground and crossing

the highway again, where it runs underground until emptying into Joseph Creek. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure manages the culverts that go under the highway. Tames said parts of this infrastructure can no longer handle the lake drainage. Plus, the culverts are continually being plugged with debris like old cattails and garbage. Tames has been cleaning some of them out. “The banks should be cleaned up and rocked all the way along,” Tames said. “And the litter should be cleared away. “I’ve been finding plastic bags, gallon jugs, bottles, steel pipes, tree branches …” The RDEK said in an email that it has been working with the City of Cranbrook, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Water Stewardship Branch to identify contributing factors to the high water level in Elizabeth Lake this year. This combination of factors include: the freeze/thaw cycles this winter, the wet spring, rapid melt in midMarch, high groundwater table, and increased flow in Jimsmith Creek watershed which is still in freshet. “A third pump was brought on line (Tues-

Ukraine: Stupidity in action It’s all too easy to imagine the high-level meeting in Kiev where the Ukrainian government decided on its next move. It probably sounded a bit like this: “Very well, gentlemen, we are agreed on our strategy for dealing with the Russians. First we will figure out exactly what they are trying to force us to do. And then we’ll do it.” Of course, it sounds stupid when you put it like that, but this does appear to be the Ukrainian strategy in a nutshell. Or as Ukrainian Security Service General Vasyl Krutov put it, “They [separatists] must be warned that if they do not lay down their arms, they will be destroyed.” As I write this, the first reports are coming in of Ukrainian troops trying to take back control of occupied government buildings in the east of the country by force. This cannot be done without killing people. And that is exactly what the Russians want. The provisional government of Ukraine does have a serious problem in the east, of course. It is trying to organise a national election in less than six weeks’ time that will produce a government whose legitimacy nobody can question. There may be a referendum on constitutional reform at the same time. It will be harder to do that credibly if government buildings in half a dozen eastern cities are occupied by armed men. On the other hand, if Russia’s President Vladimir Putin really wants to seize control of eastern Ukraine, or even all the parts of Ukraine where there are significant numbers of Russian-speakers, what he needs is a pretext. It’s already clear from Russian official statements what that pretext would be: that the “fascist puppet

government” in Kiev is “killing its own citizens” just because they are Russians or Russian-speakers. It is doubtful that all or even most of the heavily armed men in the occupied buildings are actually Ukrainian citizens. There was no separatist political organisation in the east before the revolution that was capable of producing hundreds of volunteers with military training, wearing identical uniforms and carrying identical Russian-made weapons, and using them to seize multitargets in different citGwynne ple ies simultaneously. It looks like Crimea all Dyer over again: a lot of the “local militia” there were also really Spetsnaz (Russian special forces). But there is a big difference: the Donbas, the region where Donetsk and the other affected cities are located, does not contain a civilian majority that actually wants to be ruled by Russia. If it did, the pro-Russians could just come out in non-violent crowds, like the protesters did in Kiev, and take control of the region peacefully. The Crimean tactics won’t work in the Donbas, because most people there see themselves as Ukrainian even though they speak Russian on a daily basis. So there are no peaceful mass protests demanding “unification” with Russia, and the small groups of armed men who have seized buildings in various cities will only provide a usable pretext for a Russian invasion if some of them are killed by Ukrainian government forces. The truth, mercifully withheld from the soldiers in the occupied buildings, is that they are there to provide some martyrs — and when they die, Spetsnaz or not, they will be portrayed as local people killed by

the government in Kiev. Then the Russian forces will move, to “save” the oppressed Russian-speakers of eastern Ukraine from the fascists in Kiev. So why is the Ukrainian government going to provide Putin with exactly that pretext by attacking the buildings in question? It would be inconvenient, but quite possible, just to blockade them, leave them in Russian hands and carry on the election around them. Or, if the authorities in Kiev find that too embarrassing, then just cut off the water and wait for the occupiers to come out peacefully. A week or two should be enough. You would think that the government in Kiev, which came to power itself by mainly non-violent means, and finally won when the Yanukovych government discredited itself by the massive use of force, would understand the importance of not killing people. You would, it appears, be wrong to think that. Maybe this conclusion is premature. Maybe, when the “volunteers” occupying the government buildings don’t flee at the first shots — and they won’t; these guys are professionals — the Ukrainian troops will be ordered to stop. Common sense could yet prevail. But the Kiev government has been doing the wrong things in the east for so long that a last-minute change of heart seems unlikely. And by the way, could somebody please explain to the Central Intelligence Agency why the optics of sending John Brennan, the director of the CIA, to Kiev last Sunday were so bad? And why swatting the critics away by saying that it was just a “routine” visit made matters worse? Governments that are “routinely” visited by the head of the CIA are usually puppet governments. Though to be fair, in this case it’s not so much a puppet government as a very stupid government.

standard, we have no idea how they’re going to respond. If we may, we’d like to offer you our own personal opinion: we think you’ll love it. We think that it’ll alter your perspective. We think that it’ll be new, but art is always

changing, and something odd can often work itself out to be something really damn cool. The show runs from May 8 to May 11 at the Key City Theatre. Curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. for the first three nights,

and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for students and seniors, and $18 for the unlucky rest of you. It’ll be a fun night for the whole family, or a fun night away from your cats. Urinetown: the Musical – honestly.

Think globally, act locally, and vote

“Think Globally, Act Locally.” The actual quote has been attributed to a number of different people but the principle is said to have been put forward initially by a Scots Planner, Patrick Geddes, as far back as 1915. Whatever its origins, it is becoming more widely accepted that effective action, even on global issues, begins at the local level. Not only is this a matter of individual choice and responsibility but also an issue for local governments. As senior levels of government download or back away from responsibilities for affordable housing, health and social services, and the environment, local governments are increasingly called upon to address these needs. At the same time, municipalities across the country face infrastructure deficits and rising costs for core services. Property taxation is one of the few options available for local governments to raise funds yet municipal councils must attempt to keep taxes within affordable levels. Daunting? Yes, but also a challenge — especially when considered in the context of outside influences. Climate change may be a subject for debate but, using water as an example, there can be little doubt that a trend towards warming temperatures and an earlier spring runoff is already having an impact on our own ability to meet the peak summer demands. Upcoming coun-

cils will have to consider strategies to address this issue by way of increased storage capacity, water metering, or other means to reduce consumption. The solution will likely be costly and economic factors outside our immediate control will influence our ability to pay for these and other improvements necessary to meet the city’s needs. Taking steps to ensure that services are provided to support a vibrant and healthy community is an ongoing task that requires creativity and an ability to collaborate with other city orgaBob nizations as well as senior Whetham levels of government. All of these issues at some point become topics for council discussion and debate. Despite the direct role of local government in many areas of our daily lives, voter turnout is abysmally low, averaging about 32 per cent across the province. By comparison, the voter turnout for federal and provincial elections is nearly double. Many reasons are given including cynicism about politicians generally, apathy, voter alienation, and the difficulty in getting information to make informed choices. Another factor is simply the number of candidates on a municipal ballot. Federal and provincial ridings are represented by a single candidate while municipal governments have positions for several councillors as well as a mayor. Disturbingly, voter registration is lowest

among the 18 – 24 age group. Regardless of voter turnout, municipalities must continue to function. The question for individual electors is whether or not you wish to take part in the decisions that affect you and your community. Information on City of Cranbrook functions is provided together with contact information, council minutes and agendas on the city website: www.cranbrook.ca. Council meetings are open and later televised. As we approach the fall election, there will also be one or more forums to provide an opportunity to hear and question potential candidates. For those who choose to put their names forward and stand for office, it is worth noting that local government is non-partisan. Each councillor is responsible and accountable to electors for his or her own position when voting on city matters. Serving on council involves a considerable commitment of time with limited financial remuneration but for someone interested in taking an active role to ensure that our city is the best it can be, there are less tangible rewards. Ultimately, the choice to have a say is yours. Tippett to coach Canada at world championship C ANADIAN PRESS

Dave Tippett is known for getting the most out of his players in the NHL, and he’ll be counted on to do the same as Team Canada’s coach at the upcoming world championship. Tippett, whose Phoenix Coyotes narrowly missed the playoffs, was named to that post Wednesday and will be joined by assistants Peter DeBoer of the New Jersey Devils and Paul Maurice of the Winnipeg Jets. It’ll be up to that staff to try to make the most of a roster that won’t be as star-studded as the group that won gold at the Sochi Olympics. “That’s the exciting thing for me is to try to get players in, get them in roles and get them in situations where they can succeed at,” Tippett said in a phone interview. “That’s always been our philosophy in Phoenix is we might not be a cap team, but we got players that can do

jobs in certain areas and really excel at it. “Once the team gets settled in here we’ll try to figure out where everybody kind of fits, but that’s one of the challenges, whether you’ve got young players or veteran players or superstar players, is getting your group together and getting them all in situations where they can play well.” This Canadian team will include David Perron of the Edmonton Oilers, Sean Monahan of the Calgary Flames, Morgan Rielly and James Reimer of the Toronto Maple Leafs, among others who have already confirmed they’ll go to Minsk, Belarus, for next month’s tournament. There isn’t Olympic experience there, but Jason Chimera of the Washington Capitals was there in 2007 when Canada last won gold at the world championship, and Reimer went 4-0 at the 2011 tourna-

ment. Tippett, from Moosomin, Sask., was an assistant coach in 2009 and 2013, and DeBoer, from Waterloo, Ont., was on staff in 2010 and 2011. Maurice, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., has experience with the bigger, international-sized ice surface from coaching in the KHL. There’s a certain style of play that has come to be expected from Tippett-coached teams. The ice means there are some adjustments, but don’t anticipate that changing too much. “There’s some things that you have to be aware of: spacing and sometimes running around where you’ve got to be a little more position,” Tippett said. “I think the Canadian teams that have done well over there have gone over and played a real simple, hard, Canadian style of hockey. Those are principles that we want to put into place.”

Local boys and girls teams with the East Kootenay Volleyball club (EKVC) did very well at the second annual Cranbrook Cup tournament at the College of the Rockies featuring club from around B.C., Alberta and Washington State. The U14 boys team ended up capturing a sliver medal while the U13 boys claimed a bronze.

The U13 girls team picked up a bronze medal in the triple-ball format. Parkland Middle School hosted another portion of the event, with the EKVC Blue U14 girls team winning their division, while an EKVC U14 team out of Creston earned a bronze medal. Tournament director Brian Millis said teams were happy with the event and look forward to returning next year.

The EKVC is in it’s final week of practice before heading to provincials in Alberta and is also gearing up for the Rich Wayling Memorial, Kootenay Cup tournament this weekend for the U15 and U16 teams. The tournament will be the largest event hosted by the club, with 26 teams entered to play and will be hosted by the College of the Rockies, Mount Baker Secondary School and Parkland Middle School.

In the end, the Tigers were able to claw back from extinction. Facing a 3-1 series deficit, Medicine Hat won three in a row, clinching their second-round series with a 4-1 win over the Kootenay Ice on Wednesday night. Trevor Cox scored the game winner 11 seconds in to the third period after the two teams held each other to a 1-1 tie after 40 minutes. “We made a mental error on our pass, made too soft of a play and they come down and score a nice goal,” said Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “It was a bad play by a defenceman and, unfortunately, the puck went in the net. Medicine Hat added another two goals for insurance before the final buzzer sounded. The Ice threw everything but the kitchen sink at Tigers goaltender Marek Langhamer, who made 43 saves. “I would say that we had some opportunities that we didn’t bury,” said McGill. “Probably a couple in particular that probably didn’t go our way, but their goalie was good, our goalie was real good and we made two mistakes that gave them great opportunities in our net.

“They didn’t make those mistakes we did.” Mackenzie Skapski was equally as sharp, making 24 saves in 27 shots, turning away more than a few dangerous chances from the trio of Cox, Curtis Valk and Cole Sanford. Landon Peel was the lone goal-scorer for the Ice. The Tigers advance to the Eastern Conference championship, where they will face the Edmonton Oil Kings. Early on, it looked good for the Ice. Peel scored less than a minute into the game, beating Langhamer with a screened shot at the point. That’s all the Tigers netminder allowed for the rest of the night. Steve Owre found the equalizer six minutes later, collecting a rebound off a shot from the point to put it home. The two teams held each other off the scoresheet for the rest of the period and throughout the next frame. Medicine Hat had two chances with the man-advantage in the opening period, but Kootenay’s penalty kill kept them off the scoreboard. The Tigers’ quick transition play—a hallmark of the series—created a more than a few odd-man rushes, and Skapski

made a pair of big saves in the second period off Miles Koules and Sanford. However, only 11 seconds into the final 20 minutes of the game, Cox potted the go-ahead goal to give the Tigers the lead. Kootenay did everything to find that game tying marker, doubling up Medicine Hat on the shot clock in the period, but Langhamer was unbeatable. Just after the halfway mark of the frame, a blocked shot from an Ice defenceman in the Tigers’ zone turned into a two-on-none rush for Medicine Hat, and Cox tallied again for a two-goal lead. Skapski headed to the bench with over two minutes left in the game, but Sanford found an empty net to put it out of reach. The team will return to Cranbrook on Wednesday night and hold exit meetings over the next few days before the players return to their respective hometowns. Roughriders sign quarterback Durant to contract extension C anadian Press

REGINA - Corey Chamblin knows who his starting quarterback will be for the next little while. The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed veteran Darian Durant to a multi-year extension Wednesday after leading the club to just its fourth Grey Cup title last year. Knowing he has the 31-year-old Durant for the long-term - reportedly through the 2016 season - is a big relief for Chamblin, named the CFL’s coach of the year following Saskatchewan’s Grey Cup championship. “In order to win championships you need to have a quarterback and to win multiple championships you have to have a quarterback who believes in the head coach and I think that’s what we have,” Chamblin said during a news conference announcing Durant’s extension. “It’s huge to have that security. “That’s the biggest

security blanket knowing who’s going to be under centre for the next few years.” The five-foot-11, 214-pound Durant, a native of Florence, S.C., had one year left on his previous deal. He’s entering his ninth CFL season, all with Saskatchewan. “A lot of guys don’t get the opportunity to stay with one franchise their whole career,” Durant said. “It was basically a no-brainer for me to stay a part of this organization. “It’s the best in the league.” And there’s certainly continuity at the top as this off-season the Riders have re-signed Durant, Chamblin and general manager Brendan Taman to new extensions. Taman also added the title of vice-president of football operations to his job description Taman called Durant’s deal “win-win” in that the player receives a fair-market contract that the Riders can af-

ford while the team maintains the nucleus of its roster. “It wasn’t about taking as much money as he can get, it was about keeping our team together and that tells you all about Darian,” Taman said. “There was a market that was out there that was laid out by other quarterbacks that had signed. “We worked through it and both parties are happy. I think the key in all this is Darian Durant should be recognized as an elite quarterback in this league, which we

are prepared to do from our end and were able to get to an agreement with him on a multiyear extension.” Exact contract and financial details weren’t divulged but Durant said his new deal doesn’t make him the CFL’s highest-paid player in 2014. It’s generally regarded B.C. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay enjoys that distinction with a reported salary of about $450,000 this year. Veteran Henry Burris of the expansion Ottawa Renegades is said to

have a similar deal if he can stay healthy this season. While Durant’s deal appears to offer the Riders salary-cap savings in 2014, the burning question remains what the quarterback’s average salary might be over the term of the contract. But Chamblin believes Durant can be even better moving forward. “Brendan mentioned him being an elite quarterback, I think Darian has been a very good quarterback,” Chamblin said. “I’m ex-

cited to see him become a great quarterback and one that we can talk about for years.” It’s not the first time Durant has made a commitment to Saskatchewan. In January 2009 he re-signed with the Riders rather than test the free-agent waters. Durant enjoyed a solid 2013 campaign, passing for 4,154 yards and a league-high 31 TD passes with 12 interceptions. He threw for 550 yards and five TDs with no interceptions in leading Saskatchewan

to victory in the West semifinal and final. And then Durant threw for 245 yards and three TDs against Hamilton in the Grey Cup game at Mosaic Stadium, leading Saskatchewan to a 45-23 victory. Durant has completed 1,745 of 2,842 passes (61.4 per cent) for 22,711 yards and 125 touchdowns against 87 interceptions over his career. He’s also a two-time Grey Cup champion, having earned his first championship ring in ‘07 as a backup with the Riders.

Each year, local K – 12 teaching staff from across the East Kootenay collaborate on professional development during a Regional Specialists Association (RSA) Day. This year’s RSA Day took place on April 7 and highlighted renowned keynote speaker, Dr. Martin Brokenleg. Brokenleg is co-author of the internationally best-selling book, Reclaiming Youth at Risk and co-founder of the Circle of Courage, an approach to youth guidance that draws on Native tribal wisdom in conjunction with early youth-work pioneer and youth development work. It outlines the four essential elements every child needs in order to flourish and thrive as belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. “As a district we understand this connection,” said Trina Ayling, trustee representative for the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement (AEA). “It’s important for all kids, yes, but especially for those students of Aboriginal ancestry as it speaks directly to who they are culturally.”

According to Jason Tichauer, the new Director of Student Learning and Aboriginal Education, this approach pays off with higher-than-provincial-average graduation rates for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students. “Provincially, grad rates averaged 62 per cent for Aboriginal and 80 per cent for non-Aboriginal students over the past five years, while SD5 averaged 73 per cent and 83 per cent respectively. There are a number of factors responsible for this success and addressing the whole child based on Aboriginal principals is one of them.” Currently, 14 per cent of SD5 students are of Aboriginal ancestry. The province provides annual targeted funding to support Aboriginal learning. These supports include Aboriginal Education Support Workers (AESW), an Elder’s program and the Welcoming Spaces Project, an initiative to increase awareness of Aboriginal culture throughout SD5. Clever alternatives to traditional dyed Easter eggs

Easter is a time when Christian families gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious customs abound on Easter, but a number of secular traditions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the coloring of Easter eggs. Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring. Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs this year. * Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store and purchase wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated however you desire. The wooden eggs will be durable and can be stored away for use each and every year. Because they are made of wood, a naturally recyclable material, they are easy on the environment. * Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vegetable juices -- even packaged drink mixes -- can be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because you’re controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use. * Experiment with papier mache. This ancient paper crafting technique uses recycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday. * Purchase corn starch eggs. Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials to children’s craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material.

When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for composting. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water. * Make edible eggs. Traditional Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting eggs out of meringue as well. * Dough eggs: Have the children get out their favorite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can purchase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After drying, the eggs should be ready to paint. * Drained eggs: Those interested in using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

Membership Support Committee In an effort to help new members to the Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce feel welcome and nurtured in their first months of membership, the Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce has formed a membership support committee. The committee acts as an outreach and retention committee designed to involve and inform new members of chamber benefits and upcoming events and programs. Committee members are volunteers who, on behalf of the Chamber, make good-will calls to encourage strong continuing membership and active support of chamber programs.

Volunteers Wanted Do you have a passion for Cranbrook? Do you like to meet people and volunteer? The Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce is the sponsoring organization for the Visitor Info Centre and Satellite Centre in Cranbrook. From mid-June to Labour Day weekend, we are responsible for the operation and overall management of our Visitor Info Centre at Elizabeth Lake Park. Zyoji Jackson Successful COTR graduate After graduating from high school, Zyoji wanted to stay in Cranbrook where his job, family and friends were. “I was attracted to the availability of doing my first two years of a science degree without having to move far away and pay rent in a big city,” he says. “I had also heard about the compassionate and patient teachers with solid credentials at the College.” After completing two years of University Transfer courses at College of the Rockies in 2001, Zyoji completed general studies at Concordia University as well as a Bachelor of Science and teacher certification from the University of Victoria. He’s currently teaching math and science at a local independent school in Victoria.

TORONTO — A gallery of political luminaries from all sides of the partisan divide gathered at a cavernous Toronto cathedral Wednesday to set aside their differences and pay final respects to former finance minister Jim Flaherty. Mourners donned green scarves, a tribute to Flaherty’s Irish heritage, inside St. James Cathedral as they celebrated the diminutive, combative politician, who died of a heart attack last week at the age of 64. “What a sad time this is in the life of our country,’’ said Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who began the proceedings with an upbeat personal tribute to his longtime political confidante. Directly addressing Flaherty’s wife Christine Elliott and the couple’s triplet sons, Harper said, “We have lost a partner in politics, but you have lost a partner in life.’’ Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and former prime ministers Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell and John Turner were among those on hand for the funeral, as were various federal cabinet ministers,

Harper arrived late in the day for a private viewing. Flaherty’s state funeral is the first such honour since 2011, when former NDP leader Jack Layton was laid to rest.

VICTORIA – After rejecting an offer from the school district bargaining agency for a long-term contract, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation went to the Labour Relations Board this week to establish essential service levels for strike action. BCTF members voted 89 per cent in March to endorse a three-stage strike plan that can begin with 72 hours notice. Phase one includes restricting communication with school managers, arriving no more than an hour before and leaving an hour after school hours, and refusing supervision of students outside class time. It does not affect pre-arranged voluntary activities such as coaching, but the refusal of supervision requires essential service levels that compel some teachers to assure the safety of students while they are out of classes. Peter Cameron, chief negotiator for B.C.’s 60 school districts, said there are some rural schools with no management staff to supervise playgrounds. Typically it is the employers’ association that seeks an essential services order, but this time the BCTF applied.

That’s unusual for a union that has a history of opposing essential service orders at the LRB and the International Labour Organization, Cameron said. It is also a sign that the BCTF is preparing for strike action after the Easter break. Cameron said if stage one strike action begins, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will seek an order that the union pay for its extended benefits during any withdrawal of service. That would cost about $5 million a month for 41,000 public school teachers. “In order that there is in fact pressure on both sides, BCPSEA needs to respond to any phase one activities with measures that put corresponding pressure on the union,” Cameron wrote in a letter to BCTF president Jim Iker. Cameron’s initial offer is for a 10year agreement with pay increases totalling 6.5% over the first six years and additional wage increases to be negotiated for the final four years. BCTF negotiators countered with a three-year proposal with three per cent plus a cost-of-living increase in each year. With compounding and current estimates of inflation, BCPSEA calculates that could amount to 13.5 per cent over three years.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Several years ago, I went to a massage parlor and paid a woman for sex. This same woman recently got a job in the office where I work. There are only nine employees. This is an unbelievable coincidence. We get along pretty well as co-workers and are respectful toward each other. But it’s awkward when we bump into each other in the narrow hallways or for the occasional elevator ride. I have been carrying around a letter in my pocket for a long time. It is not a love letter. The woman is married, and I am not interested in her. The message in the letter is simply to reassure her that I have never gossiped about her to anyone, especially our co-workers. I want to put her mind at ease. I’d give her this letter, but I’m afraid of her reaction. Should I just leave things alone? -Sleepless Dear Sleepless: Yes. Please. In time, she will realize that you can be trusted not to ruin her work reputation, and she will relax. Her concerns in the meantime are not your business, and we doubt she would appreciate a reminder of your encounter. Behave around her as you would any other co-worker. Your awkwardness only adds to her discomfort. Dear Annie: I belong to a small group of friends who gather often at one another’s homes. One of our friends recently moved into a larger “dream home” and now wants gatherings at her place more often. The trouble is, they have two cats and for some odd reason have placed the litter box directly in front of the toilet. Worse, most of the time, the box is not clean. It smells and can be downright nasty. Since they live a good distance from town, it’s difficult for us not to use her bathroom before we leave. We were recently invited to another gathering there. We turned it down, saying we had other plans. Should we address this head on or ignore it and hold our breath? We can’t refuse all celebrations at their home. -Not a Party Pooper Dear Party: Here’s what you say: “We love the gatherings in your lovely home, but there is a problem with the litter box being placed in front of the commode. None of us is comfortable using your bathroom. We don’t want to hurt your feelings, but we thought you would want to know.” Dear Annie: I totally agree with your advice to “Omaha, Neb.,” who wants to grow old with his wife, who is 100 pounds overweight. Three years ago, I weighed 280 pounds, was Type II diabetic and had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I walked into an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and found loving support and people I could relate to. A month later, I joined Weight Watchers because I liked the diet, and a year after that, I added a structured exercise program. Today, I am 90 pounds lighter, my numbers for diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol are all in the normal range, and I am so much happier. I still have some weight to lose, but I know that with the help of OA and the other changes I’ve made in my life, I will reach my goal. More importantly, I no longer hide my feelings about my weight, and I have the support I need to keep myself strong and healthy. I hope that “Omaha’s” wife realizes what a caring and concerned husband she has and accepts the support he offers. I also hope she finds her own way back to a healthy lifestyle. Barbara Irmgard Rieger (nee Herbstein) 1928 - 2014 In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 10, 2014 Barbara passed away peacefully at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook. Barbara was born in Breslau, Germany on May 10, 1928. She was a war survivor and in 1952 she decided to immigrate to Canada. She met Wolfgang Rieger and they were married in 1956. They were married for 57 years. Barbara is survived by her loving husband Wolfgang, her son John, numerous relatives and friends in Europe, The United States Of America and Canada. At Barbaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. We would like to express our thanks to all of our friends and the doctors and nurses who attended to Barbara during her illness for the compassion they showed to her and to our family. The objective of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan is to address water quality concerns associated with mining activity in the Elkford Community Conference Centre watershed, including selenium. The process to develop the (large meeting room) plan includes several public consultation periods, the first of 750 Fording Drive which took place in fall 2013. The second consultation period April 23, 2014 will take place from April 9–30, 2014. 5:00–8:00 p.m. During the public consultation period, Teck is asking for your feedback on the work being done to develop the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. Your input will be considered in the development of the Plan. Consultation materials, including an online feedback form, will be available at www.teck.com/ElkValley on April 9.
