It was anything but the typical “what I did on my spring vacation” talk in Rock Creek Sunday night as Lisa Siewert and six high school students recently returned from Guatemala presented a report on their trip to the community. They travelled to San Antonio Aguascalientes from March 13-24 to work with Hope for Home, a home for children with disabilities. Lisa said the team spent their spring break learning first-hand what life is like in the third world. The evening opened with Pastor Dave Janke of Kettle River Chapel in Rock Creek welcoming over 50 people who had gathered to hear about the trip. Lisa explained that Guatemala is a very poor country with over half of their children under five being chronically malnourished. “On this trip we mostly worked with children,” she said. “Some of them were either neglected, abused or abandoned— or the parents just simply didn’t have the means to take care of their children. It was a privilege for us to be able to go to schools and orphanages and feeding centres and villages to help where we could.” • See GUATEMALA page 4

Staff and board members of the Heritage Credit Union on the celebration of a decade of service at the West Boundary Branch in Greenwood: (L-R) Donna Durban, Edward Rohn, Dan Wack, Jeniece Uyeyama, Joanne Cotter and Christina Delisle.

Credit Union celebrates decade A special anniversary celebration was held in the West Boundary on Saturday, April 12 as the Heritage Credit Union (HCU) marked the 10th anniversary of the West Boundary branch in Greenwood. The celebration offered members—old and new—cake, coffee and a chance to win a door prize. Two senior directors came from Castlegar to offer their congratulations. Chair of the HCU board Dan Wack, and Edward Rohn, who serves as secretary, both insisted the hard work and dedication of the West Boundary staff and management over the past decade is the main reason for the success of the branch. Joanne Cotter, who served as branch manager for nearly seven years from the time the branch opened,

was at the branch on Saturday as well. Cotter now holds a position at Castlegar branch as Manager, Retail Services. Current manager Donna Durban has been at the helm since December 2010. “It seems like just the other day we started this branch,” Wack remarked. According to their website (heritagecu.ca) HCU was established in 1948 (originally named Castlegar Savings Credit Union). At the time of incorporation assets were $45.00 in share capital and $9 in initiation fees. The average weekly wage in B.C at the time was $42.47. Today HCU has over $148 million in assets with three branches serving the communities of Castlegar, Slocan Valley, and the West Boundary.

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Training in Midway, BC The Village of Midway, City of Greenwood, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) and the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) would like to host an EMR training to support recruitment for the Midway and Greenwood ambulance stations. In order for the course to proceed, 5-6 new staff would need to be hired and available for training. The course will be provided in Midway. Interested applicants must have a Class 4 drivers licence and clean criminal record. When the new staff begins with BCAS, they work as ‘driver only’ employees during the six month probationary period. Following this, BCAS provides the new staff with EMR training through the JIBC and the employee can then begin providing direct patient care for the community. Kari Durban (with mike) explains one of the pictures shown on Sunday evening at Kettle River Chapel as six high school students who spent their spring break volunteering at a home for disabled children in Guatemala. From left are Anna Danyluk, Elijah Sheremeto, Shelby Condon, team-leader and chaperone Lisa Siewert, John Siewert, Kari Durban and Josiah Danyluk.

Guatemala

Continued from page 1

The team included five BCSS students: Anna and Josiah Danyluk from Midway, Kari Durban from Greenwood, John Siewert and Shelby Condon from Rock Creek. Joining them was Langley high school student Elijah Sheremeto who formerly lived in the Boundary. “The team definitely had to step out of their comfort zone,” noted Lisa. Those at the chapel on Sunday evening were treated to numerous slides of the trip and the smiling faces and bright shining eyes left everyone moved. The team also presented a three-minute skit that they had prepared for the trip. One photograph showed an outdoor sink that doubles as a place to washes dishes and do laundry and it was reported that most people only have water for part of the day. “I think that their eyes were opened to reality and they see the reality of their own world a little differently now,” Lisa commented. They painted, helped bag and deliver food and also did a program, which consisted of face painting, soccer and animal balloons. On Sunday evening the kids were asked to briefly explain what the trip meant to them. John Siewert said this was his second trip to Guatemala. His family had come across Hope for Home when they went on a five-month trip to the country a year ago and John was the main motivator for getting this return trip organized. “One of the things that changed for me was that, because we were staying at a home for handicapped people I became a lot more comfortable and familiar with ways to bond with them and bring them joy,” John explained. “This trip for me was an eye-opener, it was the first time out of country for me,” Durban commented. “It was seeing what an actual third-world country is like. Just helping the children and hav-

ing the children just let you love them was amazing for me. That was my favourite part—letting all of the children love you and giving you hugs because that is all they wanted from you.” Anna Danyluk said she learned from the people at Hope for Home to be happy and thank God in all situations. “They were always smiling and always happy and thankful. I really learned to thank God in all these situations too. Try to see the good things and try to be positive and not just find the negative stuff.” “This was my first time out of country as well,” Sheremeto said. “I learned how to love everyone everywhere and that God helps everyone everywhere.” Condon said she was moved by how much the little things helped everybody. “It was amazing to see how the simplest things impacted them.” Josiah Danyluk was struck by how happy the people were down there. “They didn’t have much, and helping them made them so happy. Just like us donating C$10 meant so much for them.” To raise funds and prepare for the trip the team met monthly since last fall and was involved in a number of fundraisers: helping in the tea garden at the fair, delivering phone books, selling apple crisps at the Christmas craft fair and a bottle drive. “They were a really amazing group of kids,” Lisa Siewert said of her team. “I am really proud of them and I think as a community we all should be. They were really cooperative. They helped where they were needed and they got compliments from people who normally don’t compliment teens. “Thank you for coming and for supporting us in the many ways,” she added. “It has meant so much to the team and the children at Hope for Home.”

Spring Financial Planning Check-Up As the snow begins to disappear and thoughts of warmer weather become reality, an update to your financial plan may be in order. Now might be a good time to take a look back and think about all the changes that you and your family have experienced over the past year and plan for any updates needed to your financial plan. Any major changes, whether they are personal or professional, can have a significant impact on your family’s insurance needs. A spring time review of your situation will help ensure that you have adequate coverage. If your family has grown, or you plan on getting married this year, your responsibility now extends to another person. Be sure to expand your life and disability coverage accordingly. A divorce, serious illness, or death in the family may also require you to adjust your insurance and estate plans. If you have changed employment or are expecting a raise or promotion soon, then your financial plan needs to be updated. With higher income come higher financial losses to your family if something were to happen to you. If you have lost your job or retired, then it is crucial to replace your group insurance benefits with a personal plan. With rising costs, perhaps you have taken on more debt. If you have purchased a new home, a new car or borrowed to renovate your bathroom, make sure your insurance is adequate to cover all liabilities and interest payments. Spring time is also a good time to give your mutual funds and investment portfolio a check-up. With RRSP season over, it may be a good time to rebalance your portfolio and ensure that your investments meet your risk profile objectives. Consider starting contributions to a Tax Free Savings Account. The more you save on a tax free basis, the more funds you leave in your pocket and out of the tax man’s coffers. If appropriate for your investment strategy, consider selling your nonregistered portfolio of holdings that are in a loss position. A capital loss

must first be used to offset the tax on any capital gains realized in the same year. Any remaining loss can be applied to gains from the previous three years or used in the future. It is important to seek professional advice to determine the best strategy for your situation. December 31 is the deadline to contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews so that you qualify for the Canada Education Savings Grant for 2014. Recent government budget changes to RESP rules raised the amount on which the CESG is paid to $2 500 from $2 000. So if you contribute $2500 before the end of the year, your RESP will get an extra $500 from the CESG. The budget also eliminated the annual contribution limit and raised the lifetime maximum contribution to $50 000 from $42 000 per beneficiary. If you turn 71 this year, you have until December 31, 2014 to convert your RRSP’s to a Registered Retirement Income fund. Your income, however, can be deferred until the next year to allow you time to start budgeting this extra income for tax purposes. Professional guidance in all these circumstances is essential and can assist you in keeping your insurance, investment and estate plans up to date and allow you to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise. Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees and expenses all may be associated with mutual fund investments. Please read the prospectus before investing. Mutual fund securities are not insured or guaranteed, their values change frequently and past performance may not be repeated.

Students prepare for grad

Serving the Boundary for over 20 years

In conversation with members of the Class of 2014

Introducing

Thinh Atkinson

When Thinh Atkinson was a 13-year-old student in Grade 8 she came with her family to the Boundary from Nova Scotia. She noticed the difference right away. For one thing there were over 1,000 other kids at the east coast school. “It’s a different feeling, but it is better because I joined a lot of clubs and sports,” states Thinh. “In Nova Scotia I was a little bit intimidated so I didn’t join any sports activities.” While she says she would have never joined any of the clubs in Nova Scotia, she has blossomed at BCSS. She is Student Council President, a member of Spirit Club, she joined the basketball team in Grade 9 and soccer in grade ten as a goal keeper. Thinh has already been accepted at UBC Okanagan for this falls’ intake. She plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science. “After that I hope to further my education and go to medical school and become a doctor,” she confidently announces. “If that doesn’t work then I guess I will go to BCIT and get a certificate in the cardio-vascular pulmonary field.” She says she likes the science courses, and her

favourite is biology. Thinh confesses to wanting to be a doctor since Grade 8, when she took her first science class from Mrs. Baia. “She has a lot of passion and it shows in a teacher,” Thinh said. Thinh has two older sisters and two older brothers, plus a younger brother and another younger sister. When asked what it was like to be the middle child in a family with that many siblings she said, “You kind of have to obey the older ones and look after the younger ones.” Thinh was able to count on her parents for transportation that has allowed her to gain valuable work experience. She worked at Extra Foods in Grand Forks for two years; and last summer was hired at the Greenwood Museum and Visitor’s Centre. She says the museum job is great. “You meet a lot of different people and you just learn a lot of local history. Once I met a deaf family and there was about six of them. We communicated very well by writing things on paper. They were really happy so that sort of brought things into a new perspective. They are optimistic—despite their challenges.” During their grad transition work students this year have been asked to pick an inspirational quote. Thinh choose, “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” Obviously, Thinh has taken this to heart.

Perfect hand Leo Jacob proudly shows off his 29 crib hand that he got in a game at the Greenwood Legion Crib Night on Monday, March 10. But he didn’t get to count it because the opposition pegged out before his turn to count. Leo says he’s been playing since he was around eight years old, so he figures it’s taken him probably 65 years of playing to get his first perfect hand. It was Yuko Hasebe who counted out just before Leo. “She was sad, but happy,” recalled Leo. Yuko almost didn’t make it—she said she needed four points and got six. The hand was dealt by Cathy Willis and Paul Richards was the fourth player at the table. Greenwood Legion plays crib every Monday night at 7 p.m.

Is Medicare dead? B.C.’s largest federation of seniors has called on the federal, provincial and territorial governments to negotiate “a new comprehensive health accord that protects, transforms and strengthens our national health care system.” At a recent special meeting held in Vancouver—11 days after the expiry of the national health accord— about 100 seniors unanimously adopted a declaration that quality health care must be available to every resident of Canada without discrimination, and regardless of ability to pay. “All levels of government have a role to play in the delivery of quality and accessible health care,” said Lorraine Logan, President of the 107,000 member Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C. (COSCO). “To ensure Medicare is not fragmented, Ottawa must provide coordination, foster innovation, and provide financial support at a level that secures the integrity of the 1984 Canada Health Act,” she said. Michael McBane of the Canadian Health Coalition said the federal government has launched a “stealth attack” on Medicare, with reductions in funding scheduled for future years. “We need a national debate, a national conversation on the future of Medicare,” said McBane, adding that the withdrawal of federal leadership will lead to a fragmentation of service. Wendell Potter, former head of communications at a large health insurance company in the USA, said he walked away from his job when he realized private corporations were not improving access, were not improving quality of care, and looked on health care as a major profit centre. He called on Canadians to carefully examine the misleading language used by those who promote privatization. Seniors at the meeting expressed outrage that the federal government has refused to negotiate a new health accord, effectively ending Medicare as a national program.

Bridesville Hall was spun back in time last weekend as the Speakeasy production played to two sold-out crowds. After a wonderful dinner provided by the volunteers from the Bridesville Community Club, those in attendance were treated to a grand theatrical event with a delightful storyline covering the period from the mid ’20s through the crash of 1929. There has been one additional show added for Saturday, April 26 and there were still some tickets available as of this printing. All people involved with the production are volunteers and all proceeds go to local non-profit groups. As an interesting side note, Erika Tafel and her daughter Olivia Pedlar are both playing the same character in different times. (Top photo) Rossana GarciaManzano (left), Emilio Martinez and Terry Keough perform in The Speakeasy at the Bridesville Hall. (Right) Colleen Smith (left), Terry Keough, Karen Harpur and Shannon Keough were members of the cast who staged another great original performance in the West Boundary. A final performance is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.

Letters to the editor

reporter@boundarycreektimes.com

Speak up if you don’t want chickens Editor, The Times: Re: Opposition to raising chickens within city limits I am not sure if the majority of residents/taxpayers in the City of Greenwood know that city council is consid-

ering allowing the raising of chickens within the boundaries of the city. I am not sure that the majority of residents would want their next door neighbours raising chickens. Maybe they do. If they don’t, however, I just want to remind them that they should let their thoughts be known to city council.

That old saying is so true—the squeaky wheel gets the grease! I have no idea how many people want to raise chickens, but if the majority of taxpayers are opposed, then council should not even be considering the matter. Marjie MacLean, Greenwood

Dinner Theater - Fund Raiser! Third show added April 26th! After playing to two packed houses April 11th & 12th, there is only one chance left to join the fun! Join us and have a peek at life in the roaring twenties! Back in the days of prohibition Big Al's place was a booming Speakeasy, with everyone carefree and happy as the "shoe juice" flowed and the stock market continued to soar. One night something happened that would leave many stuck in limbo while the only one who knew the whole truth slowly went mad. Come see how the mystery unwinds! This original musical will only play one more time and only at Bridesville Hall April 26th. Tickets $25 includes dinner - All proceeds to local non profits.

To arrange for tickets, please call Shannon @ 250-446-2942 or purchase at Christian Valley Service in Rock Creek

Squash (Above) On any Saturday during market season you can find Jeanette Taylor and Vic and Monica Boychuck at the Rock Creek Market. The long offseason between September and May doesn’t sit well with them. So when the snow starts to melt they get an itch that has to be scratched. So the 3rd annual Spring Bazaar in Midway was held last Saturday in the Community Hall. With 34 tables booked it seems that others have the same itch. Proceeds from the day went to the Midway and Beyond Little Theatre Group. (Below) Jost and Brigitte Aretter work together to create these beautiful wood clocks. The couple came to Midway from Chiliwack. Jost retired from the Vancouver Parks Board and they wanted to move to a more relaxed community.

HUGS S and G U SL If you have a hug or a slug, we’d like to hear it. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Email reporter@boundarycreektimes.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints; or you may drop them off at 318 South Copper Street, Greenwood.

Slugs: To Greenwood, the smallest city, for being the dirtiest city. Why is it decrepit streets no longer get the winter’s worth of gravel and sand cleaned come spring time anymore? Grand Forks and Midway are spotless already. Take some pride in this town; what are we paying taxes for? Hugs: To everyone involved in The Speakeasy. Great show! Great food! Lots of fun. Thank you to everyone involved for all the hard work. A Big Hug: To the volunteer members of the Kettle Valley Golf Club who completely renovated the club house. Who said it couldn’t be done? Wow! Hugs: To the Village of Midway crew for all their hard work in

getting the ball diamonds ready for the season. Slugs: To the people that throw their yard waste onto the vacant city lot on Kimberley Ave just below the Catholic Church. Slugs: To the person that parked their motorhome all winter long on the vacant city lot below the Catholic Church. Slugs: To the people that own vacant city lots and let them get overgrown, creating a fire hazard to the properties on either side. Slugs: To the City of Greenwood for not taking a more proactive approach to ensure that their lots are not abused. Hugs: To all the people that helped clean up the grounds at Parkview Manor these last few days.
