P
ort Alberni resident Maryann Rumney wants people to know that you don’t have to wait until after you’re dead to donate an organ to save someone. In January, Rumney donated part of her liver to her biological aunt, who was suffering from the effects of Hepatitis C. The operation was successful and both are recovering from the procedure. Rumney has had time to reflect while on the mend. She was particularly struck, she said, by how little people knew about organ donation. “A lot of people have told me that they were surprised that I could make an organ donation while I was alive,” Rumney said. “They thought you have to be dead first and that’s not the case at all.” That Rumney donated part of her liver is almost a miracle. That she got to donate it to her aunt at all is. Rumney, 48, is an adoptee. She was born in Vancouver but grew up with her adopted family in Prince George. She lived in Ladysmith and Parksville before marrying her husband Ross and moving to Port Alberni 27 years ago. Rumney’s biological father sought her out and connected with her more than 10 years ago. He helped her search for her biological mother but mother and daughter would tragically never reunite. “She lived in Manitoba but she’d died before I found her,” Rumney said. “My dad helped me find her sisters though, and she’d told them of me before she died.” She met her aunt Wendy

Rasmussen nine years ago. A Kamloops resident, Rasmussen contracted Hepatitis C 20 years ago after receiving a blood transfusion. Her liver slowly deteriorated and she’d become particularly ill in the last three years, Rumney said. “She was critically ill, and a year ago doctors gave her until this month to live if she didn’t get a transplant,” Rumney said. Rasmussen’s condition was complicated by the fact that she has O negative blood. She could only receive a donation from someone else with the same blood type. “I’m O negative, Rumney said. Rumney said she learned that she could donate part of her
liver to her aunt. Her own liver would grow back and her aunt’s would grow to what she needed. “I didn’t even have to think about whether I should do it or not. I just did it,” she said. According to transplant.bc.ca, the first living organ transplant in B.C. was performed in 1976. Since then, hundreds of living donor transplants have occurred. Rumney underwent a battery of tests in Vancouver for five months to determine her suitability. Being a genetic match isn’t enough, she said. “You have to be compatible in size and weight for it to work,” she said. “If my aunt weighed more than me for instance then
she may need more than I can give.” She learned in September that she could donate part of her liver to her aunt, and in January of this year doctors gave a green light for the operation to proceed. “I wasn’t excited to do it, that’s not the right word. I was relieved that I was a match,” Rumney said. The procedure was performed on Jan. 27 at Vancouver General Hospital. The pair went into surgery at 7:30 a.m. Doctors removed one third of Rumney’s liver and transplanted it into her aunt. Rumney emerged first at 7 p.m. Rasmussen’s operation was finished at 10 p.m. Both are on the road to
recovery. The post-operation period is harder than the operation itself. “We had five months to prepare for the operation. But there’s no preparation time after the operation. You just go right into recovery.” Rumney says her aunt wouldn’t be alive if she hadn’t have known that you don’t have to be dead to be an organ donor, something that she finds disconcerting. “I don’t think people realize they can be a donor while they are alive,” she said. “My aunt can drive, shop, go out and do all of the things that she used to do before. The mystery surrounding a sports trophy from Port Alberni’s early history has been solved, at least partially. A 1912 “Challenge Trophy” was recovered earlier this year from a garage sale in Keremeos, but nothing was known about the cup’s origin. Deepening the mystery was the fact the cup was presented to the “Port Alberni” athletic association, which a century ago was divided into two towns, and the rivalry was strong. A news story from
the archives of the British Times Colonist dated Aug. 23, 1913 sheds light on the trophy and what it was for. Titled “Field Meet in Port Alberni” the story previewed an annual field sports event being held in Port Alberni on Labour Day weekend. According to the article, the annual event was hosted by the Port Alberni Athletic Club. The event featured competition between athletes from Vancouver and Victoria. The Victoria contingent was being led by champion sprinter Hal Beasley
who was running for the James Bay Athletic Club. An Olympian, Beasley competed in 100-metre, 200m and 400m races in the 1912 Olympic Games. The athletes were vying for some coveted trophies— including the challenge trophy offered by the Alberni Land Commission. The cup is a replica of the one given by the King of England to the Royal Yacht Club. The Coulson Group of Companies wants something done about the defacing of its building on Third Avenue or it will sell the property, owner Wayne Coulson said. In an April 7 letter
to council, Coulson Group of Companies CEO Wayne Coulson expressed concern about tagging/graffiti on the former Zellers building which he purchased last year. Coulson’s property on Third Avenue and Mar Street have been defaced six times since he bought it, he
said. Coulson said he has invested $200,000 in the property since acquiring it, and has worked to attract new business to the area. The graffiti/tagging is a personal attack on the Coulson Group of Companies, and Coulson said he wants council to apprise him
of its position on the matter and plans for followup. “This will help us decide if we continue remodelling Building N0. 2 or put the property up for sale,” Coulson said. “I am reluctant to continue to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in the uptown if this situation is acceptable to council.” Specifically, Coulson pointed to graffiti painted on the main building last month
in which the words “Sorry Coulsons...” is clearly legible. Coulson noted that he met with council prior to buying the Third Avenue and Mar Street property to discuss “the nonsense that goes on up there” and that “some of the property owners up there needed to be ‘pushed’ to clean up their properties.” Coulson noted that he was left with the impression that council supported
this. Coulson scolded council for being mum on the issue of graffiti and tagging. “What was even more surprising to me was that no one from council stood up and took the position that it is not OK to tag/ vandalize anyone’s property.” Graffiti and tagging isn’t good for the town’s image, Coun. Jack McLeman said. Leaving the material on the
Coulson building is an invitation for it to keep happening so it should be painted over, he added. Council should take a lead role in the issue by rolling up their sleeves one day of the week and paint over the graffiti themselves, Coun. Wendy Kerr said. Tag—we’re not getting it Farmland fight sheds little light A collaborative approach is needed to deal with the growing graffiti problem in Port Alberni. And it needs to happen soon. This is not a new problem: Kamloops has a non-profit Graffiti Task Force that operates in concert with the city to remove graffiti on city property. In Saanich, the police, municipality, businesses and residents work together to combat graffiti. The municipality has free graffiti removal kits available, consisting of paint, brushes, gloves, disposable coveralls and visibility safety vests. Residents have taken a vested interest in the program, taking on small projects such as painting over tagged telephone poles. While their efforts have not eradicated the problem, there is evidence that their efforts are making a definite difference. And they are achieving this not through threats, but with elbow grease and pride in their community. The Coulson Group of Companies, whose two buildings on Third Avenue have been hit multiple times since their purchase last year, have said they will sell at least one of the buildings if the city doesn’t move on this. We ask: why is this solely city council’s problem? Where is the Uptown Merchants’ Association’s voice on the matter? How about the RCMP? We know from social media that residents are fed up but what are they doing to help? The mayor has been quoted in radio reports as saying beautification is important in drawing business to the Alberni Valley. We would agree: it’s time for a more formal graffiti reporting and removal program in our city. City councillors should not be the only people rolling up their sleeves and cleaning up graffiti. — Alberni Valley News

We often contribute to the well-being of people in the underdeveloped world. This is true with fair-trade coffee and is increasingly the case with other fair-trade consumer goods, such as chocolate. The purchase of fair-tradecertified products has important consequences. It allows many producers to receive reasonable prices for their products, and numerous workers to climb out of poverty. It also has positive impacts on the environment. About 15,000 slave children works on farms and cocoa plantations in Ivory Coast, which supplies 35 per cent of the world’s cocoa. In Western Africa, they are 300,000 children under 14 working on such plantations, doing hard and dangerous labour. Overall, 14 billion workers live from cocoa plantations, several of them earning around $300US per year for their work and production. Young and old,
we should all work toward a world where solidarity is at the heart of economic development. A fair trade Easter would be an immense step in this direction.

I agree completely with Chris Alemany. Without rail, our town and port will never have “the legs” it needs to move forward. Our city, harbour and port have so much potential. Trucking to and from vessels in Port Alberni is not a viable option; never will be with our location, far from Nanaimo, one lane winding mountainous highway that can’t feed or sustain our port. The transportation hub for containers onto barges might be fine, but that would still be happening some 30 nautical miles from Port Alberni, leaving the port empty. Where is the vision and foresight that looks beyond just three or four years to see an incredible opportunity that would bring

Thank goodness Premier Pauline Marois’ self-serving quest to divide our country was rebuffed in La Belle Province. Fortunately Pierre Karl Péladeau, the ultra-rich, antiunion media baron had the audacious arrogance—and political inexperience —to dramatically declare the ultimate goal of a majority Parti Québécois government would be to transform Quebec into an independent country. Like members of any family, Canadians occasionally disagree and sometimes quarrel. However, all our dreams have a greater chance of succeeding, not by embittered separation but by respectful cooperation. Our progressive democracy has continued to evolve because of tolerance and understanding. Thankfully Quebec voters once again
I’ve noticed a rather disturbing trend with “professional” media outlets the past decade or so. Whenever a person dies an “unnatural” or “suspicious” death, or when our saintly police forces are involved in the slightest degree, the newspapers diligently report to the slavering public that the deceased person was...“known to police”. Why? What is the point of this? It’s tragic enough that the person has lost their life, but now it must be publicized with a not-so-veiled implication that ‘they deserved it’ because they were “known to police”? There are plenty of good-hearted and good-natured people who unfortunately have criminal records. These people give their time and monies to charity, help old ladies across the street, take in
and nurture injured animals, and give comforting words and deeds to those who are hurt and suffering. God forbid a newspaper editor ever runs afoul of the law. One can only hope their successor follows due diligence and reduces their life’s good work to a mere label once they give up the ghost—-a label touted by those who don’t exactly have a sterling record for crimes as a corporate whole either, it must be stated. “The greatness of a nation can be judged by how it treats its weakest member”. That idiom can be suitably translated in this context, for there is none more unable to defend themselves than those who have lost their lives. Ridiculing the dead is hardly becoming of a great nation, or that of a decent human being--and it’s painfully disrespectful to family members in mourning. It’s tantamount to desecrating their grave with slanderous graffiti. Many publications will receive this letter. It should prove interesting who has conscience to print it.

Students from John Howitt Elementary School will team up with seniors from Abbeyfield House, Fir Park and Echo Villages over the next three months to explore educational apps using iPads. Dubbed Tech Buddies, the program helps bridge the digital gap for seniors in the Alberni Valley, and offers learning opportunities for school-aged participants.

Snowbirds coming The Snowbirds air demonstration team arrives in the Comox Valley on Thursday, April 17 for three weeks of training prior to their airshow season. The Snowbirds have been known to fly over the Alberni Valley on arrival and

Woman unhurt after fall behind NIC RESCUE: | Rescue crews called to assist woman after she slipped down steep embankment on wooded trail. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
A woman was lucky to walk away unhurt after sliding down a steep embankment behind North Island College, Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews responded to the calls from the woman on her cellphone at 1
p.m. saying she’d gone down an embankment and couldn’t climb back up, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said. Ambulance dispatch couldn’t pinpoint the woman’s location except to say she was behind the college. Emergency personnel initially tried to ping the woman’s phone
to pinpoint her whereabouts but the effort failed. Pley and another firefighter walked into the treeline behind Glenwood Centre then along the creek towards the college until they happened on two police officers who found her. According to Pley, the woman slid approximately
40-50 feet down the first part of the embankment. The slope increased though and she couldn’t backtrack. She’s lucky she stopped where she did though, Pley said. “I looked up and it was about a 100-foot vertical drop to the creek bed from where she stopped.” Crews rigged a
steep-angle pulley system and winched the woman up the embankment. The woman claimed to be trying to take a short cut to Walmart when the incident happened. The path does not go that way. She was unhurt and walked away from the area on her own. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

You don’t have to start on the road Many of the top road racers in the world didn’t start on the pavement. They started in the dirt. Why? Because it teaches you how to control a bike in less than ideal traction environments. Also, if you fall, it doesn’t hurt as much! You can certainly get your feet wet when it comes to learning clutch and brake control on a “softer” surface, too. Furthermore, you don’t need a learner’s permit if you are riding off road. When and if you want to transition to the street riding, you’ll need it for that. Check out Popkum Motor Park’s Lessons/Training (www.popkummotorpark.com) program for all ages, as well as the BC Off Road Motorcycle Association’s website (www.bcorma.ca) for upcoming MSF Dirt Bike Schools. The most noticeable updates for 2014 include a thinner front grille, narrower front headlights with LED accents. This really makes the latest model pop; especially when you compare it to the last model. The EcoDiesel option is only available in two trim levels, and this an expensive vehicle. The Overland is the cheapest diesel and it starts at roughly $58,000, $3000 more than a V6 model but the same price as the V8. The top of range Summit diesel starts at $62,000. In comparison, the base VW Touareg diesel starts at $55,000 but most of the other German mid-sized SUVs with a diesel, like the ML from Mercedes or the X5 from BMW also start in
Confessions of a Curber I guess you could say I was addicted. Only my drug of choice wasn’t coke or meth. No - it was the thrill of getting away with it all. And the easy cash, of course. Throwing the camper into that last deal was a great marketing idea. And, like last time, I decided to branch out again. There’s so much more than just cars! This time I decided to go with a motorcycle. I purchased it off the internet – I guess you could call it a curber-to-curber transaction. Oh, of course I knew every trick in the book by now. The seller gave me my old story and said that he was the real owner. Did I care? Not a chance. It was a nice Harley. And, it was a steal. I knew I could flip it for more. Why? Because I was a better marketer. But I needed to do it fast. And, I had to make sure I had a buyer that was naive enough not to do a lien check through carproof.com, or the province (bcregistryservices. gov.bc.ca). As usual, I put up a generic, one-line Craigslist ad. With a price like mine, I had a buyer within an hour. I made sure the Harley looked its best. I polished it until it sparkled and filled it with gas. Hey, what’s a few bucks? Then I ran into a small problem. I found out that my seller was the real owner. Wow. But he sold me a vehicle that was about to be repossessed.
Fortunately, he was in such a hurry that he didn’t make me do the transfer – so it was still in his name. No big deal. Bridging* was my friend. I just used his name and hoped my buyer would never ask me for ID. And I was right. The buyer smelled a bargain and took the bait like fish. He thought I was the fool! No lien check, no ID check. Just cash. I was home free, again. And the best part? When the bailiff came for the motorcycle, he didn’t even know my name.

There is a big premium to get this engine over a V6, or lower trim level V8 gasoline versions, but there are some compelling reasons to choose it. Fuel economy is number one. This heavy truck is rated at 9.8 L/100km in the city and only 7.0L on the highway. With aggressive driving and mostly city, I averaged 12L. I did notice on highway runs that the fuel economy improved radically and quickly. The towing capacity of the EcoDiesel is the same as the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 at 7200 lbs, but this truck gets substantially better fuel economy. For those that drive a lot without a trailer, the improvement in fuel economy is something to factor in. If you don’t drive a lot each year, the diesel option might not be worth the added cost.

Chrysler considers the Jeep Grand Cherokee a premium offering but I would not put this on a par with the Mercedes ML, BMW X5, Audi Q5 or a very nicely equipped VW Touareg. It is a very nice truck with as much diesel power and efficiency as the competition but the German brands have been at the whole diesel thing a lot longer and are a known entity in the market. The Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel would be a very easy choice if it were about $50,000, not $58,000. If you drive a lot or tow, the diesel might be worth it, but as it stands now the already capable and luxurious gasoline versions are less expensive and come with all the regular Grand Cherokee goodness. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Alberni homeowners will pay 2.2 per cent more in property taxes this year. Port Alberni city council passed its fiveyear financial plan at
their meeting on April 14, which was held in the theatre at Alberni District Secondary School. With the increase, the owner of a house with an average assessed value of $183,200 will pay approximately $1,647
in taxes. Council also passed an amendment to the city’s traffic regulation bylaw, meaning drivers in Port Alberni will pay more for parking fines. The minimum fine for a traffic infraction under Section Four is

The sign needs some refurbishing but is in good shape despite having lain outside for three years. The chamber has indicated to Western Forest Products that it would find a new home for the sign this year. Collette proposed that the sign be moved to and erected at the north entrance of the chamber property. More than 30,000 visitors who stop by the location would see the sign, he said. Road repairs will be conducted on Elizabeth Street compliments of the city’s land sale reserve fund. City councillors gave three readings of a bylaw which allowed the transfer of $200,000 from the fund to accommodate the capital project. In order for the transfer to take place a bylaw must first be adopted. The work to be done includes drainage improvements and road surface repair. Alberni skip leads way at nationals Sheep fall short

A Port Alberni skip has led the women’s curling team from BC to the playoffs at the 2014 ATB Financial Canadian Masters Curling Championships in Coaldale, Alberta. The Vancouver Island team of Lorraine Jeffries took home the bronze medal, after a great string of results at the competition, which ran from March 31 to April 6. A 3-2 defeat against Saskatchewan in the semi-finals took them to the bronze medal game, where they beat Manitoba 4-3. “The event was
absolutely wonderful – extremely well run, and a lot of fun,” Jeffries said. “ Coaldale did a great job of hosting the Masters.” This is the second year in a row that Jeffries has represented BC at the masters level. The Port Alberni native played third on Team Lepine at last year’s event. This year’s team, representing the Alberni Valley Curling Club had Jeffries, lead Trudy Beskau (Alberni), third Zorka Smith (Nanaimo), second Eilene Mitton (Nanaimo).

the day was 74 shot by Sam Parhar, the low net in the low Handi Cap division was won by Tyler Ruel who carded a 70. The high Handi Cap division winner, also with a 70, was Gary Korven. There was only one skin won in the low H/C division and that belongs to Glen Trask who took home $85. In the high

A scoring surge late in the second half wasn’t enough to salvage the Port Alberni Black Sheep’s Div. 1 men’s rugby season on Saturday. The fourth-place Black Sheep had travelled to Duncan for the B.C. Rugby Union Vancouver Island Cowichan Cup semi-final playoff game against the firstplace Piggies, but lost 29-21. “We had too many turnovers in offence. We were deep in their end in the first half,” Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal said. Cowichan was on the scoreboard just four minutes into the game; they dominated the first half 24-0. “We pressured a great deal but they had two tries against the flow,” Purewal said. The Black Sheep coughed up the ball inside Cowichan’s five-metre line just before halftime and
the Piggies scored. The start of the second half was no better for Port Alberni: the Sheep kicked off, but a bad catch translated into a Cowichan possession and they ran the ball all the way back to go up 29-0. The Black Sheep mounted a huge comeback after that, but “we just couldn’t do it,” Purewal said. Jack Rokotuiwakaya, Anthony Selva and Brennan Tourangeau all scored tries, converted by Ty Shannon, to bring the Sheep to within eight points, but they ran out of time. The Black Sheep will hold their windup banquet soon. In the meantime, touch rugby starts this Thursday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the rugby club at the top of Argyle Street, and continues every Tuesday and Thursday. The weather was a little sketchy today but it turned out to be all right. In the Nine hole ladies Low Handicap Division, Marta Williamson won the low gross. Low net and low putts was won by Julie Swaney.
In the High Handicap Division, there was a tie for low gross between LeAnne VanLent and Joan Hall, they also tied for the low net. Lots of pars today, Julie Swaney on No. 2 and 4; Marie Swain on No. 2, Claudia Romaniuk on No. 2 and 3; Marta Williamson on No. 9. Kath Stolth had a good day with pars on
No. 2 and 8 and also a chip in on No. 8. In the 18 hole ladies division, the Challenge Pin was held by Barb Sheare and challenged by Patsy Gauthier, Sheare held the pin with an impressive 65 net, that was the lowest net of the day. Nice to have Janice Cross back with us today, she won the low gross. In the ball sweep Cross just
cleaned up getting the closest to the pin in our KP challenge on both hole No. 4 and 13, she birdied No. 4. Next week the greens will be aerated so we will be playing one of the nines twice. Rather, as a result of holding their adjustment, their body will repair itself and the side effect of that healing will include feeling better over time. For me, there is nothing more profound than watching people’s nervous systems readdress their past injuries, their past lung, stomach, intestinal, menstrual...difficulties as they begin chiropractic care. We call it retracing. After all, healing is really just getting sick in reverse. As your nerves send more healthful messages to each of your muscles, organs and immune system, you may even experience minor flu-like symptoms as your body begins to detoxify. passed from this earth to be with her parents and the Lord on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 30 years of age. Left behind to mourn her passing is her son Mattias Newton, brother Graham, grandparents: Dieter and Judith Winter, and Dorothy Hughes (Hank Grobowsky); her aunts and uncles: Ralph Winter (Honor), Wayne Hughes (Dagmar), Cauleen Pollock, and numerous cousins. Jessica also leaves behind many friends, especially Tamara Dutton, Stefan Zaharoff, Samantha Clark, Nicole Tennison and Christina Klemencic, who she always referred to as family, loved dearly, and talked about continually. While Jessica was only here with us for a short time, she touched countless lives with her kind heart, hilarious hijinks, and desire to help others before herself. Despite the struggles and heartache she faced throughout her life, she never gave up her faith in the Lord, and fought each day to overcome her afflictions. The most important thing to know and remember about Jessica is that she was deeply loved by all those who knew her, and loved those close to her heart immensely. Her pride and motivation was always her son, who she loved most of all. A memorial will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Best Western Barclay Hotel, 4277 Stamp Ave., Port Alberni. Rock the Country with Barkley Sounds Choir on April 27
The Barkley Sounds Community Choir will celebrate spring on Sunday, April 27 with Rock the Country, a concert featuring music by Johnny Cash, the Beach Boys, The Drifters and other music from the era. Bonnie Wallbank will direct the choir, while celebrated guitarist Dennis Olsen will be the soloist. The concert starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Alberni District Secondary School Theatre. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Rollin Art Centre, Blue Fish Gallery and Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Shayne Lloyd remembers the exact moment he decided on the design for his first wood burning piece. He was sitting around a campfire with some friends, carving a spoon, and dreamed up a concept for a coffee table made out of discarded wood pallets. “I laminated a table out of old pallets and burned an octopus on top,” recalls the Port Alberni artist. “A friend of mine made the base and I sold it to my aunt.” His art has come a long way since then: he knows not to work with such hard wood. And he knows he enjoys taking something that already exists, refinishing it and transforming it with pyrography. Lloyd’s exhibit, Past, Present and Future, The Various Works of Shayne Lloyd, is at the Rollin Art Centre gallery. Lloyd will host a reception at the Rollin Art Centre this Saturday, April 19 from 1–3 p.m. Lloyd’s home is sprinkled with reclaimed treasures, such as a chest of drawers and a solid wood telephone table that he and his wife Ileana Indelicato-Lloyd have

He has sold other furniture restored and decorated with his wood burning; the first big piece he did once he moved to Port Alberni from the greater Victoria area was a cabinet depicting a humpback whale. Although Lloyd has a regular job working as a bank teller with RBC Royal Bank, and he and Ileana have a 22-month-old daughter at home, art is a constant for him. He has painted panoramas on saw blades, made architectural drawings and family portraits. He’s

created a graphic novel and a cartoon strip called Chicken Strips. He has also started a series of pencil and pen sketches of heritage pieces and machinery around the Alberni Valley, with an eye

Mostly self-taught, with some life drawing training courtesy of the animation program at the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, Lloyd says he is also inspired by the work of American underground cartoonist Robert Crumb. After his mother died when Lloyd was 25, he began to think of his own mortality and what kind of mark he wanted to leave with his art. “I need to make an impression,” he said. Continued / A26
