Oak Bay High gave St. Michaels University School the boot, but it wasn’t the outcome they were looking for. Despite a hearty effort in the final 10 minutes, Oak Bay High’s senior boys rugby team fell to SMUS in the 20th annual Boot Game. The team was unable to complete a comeback, falling 23-14 in front of vibrant crowd under the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium lights. “I think it was a matter of who could impose which team’s will in the game,” said Oak Bay coach Gary Johnston. “Today they imposed their will on us. Heroes build more than homes Holiday offers teens a chance to give back

Oak Bay High students, staff and other volunteers in front of one of the homes they built during spring break in Colonia Vicente Guerrero, Mexico. The foundations for both homes were poured prior to the teens arrival, but they built the walls, roof and painted the simple homes which measure about 6.7x6.1 m (20x22 ft). While this is Lindroos’ second time participating with Hero Holiday, her first time was in 2012, she was again overwhelmed by the experience. “I thought this being my second time, that I could handle it better because I went through this before, but the experience was still so overwhelming and powerful,” Lindroos said, explaining the love and passion for life she saw, even though the people have very little.

“It sounds so cliché and cheesy, but this was the highlight of my life.” Lindroos said the trip gave the students a new perspective as they witnessed extreme poverty. The teens also learned how valuable water is, as it was limited for showers and isn’t safe for consumption. “You can really see how the trip changed them,” Lindroos said. The students participated in Live Different’s Hero Holiday. Live Different is a charitable organization that arranges humanitarian work for Canadian youth to help those living in extreme poverty. The students spent a year-and-a-half fundraising for the trip and flew to San Diego last month. They then journeyed by bus to Colonia Vicente Guerrero, a small town about 300 kilometres south in Baja California. To Grade 12 student Jane Lindroos, it was an eye-opening experience and the scenery vastly changed as they travelled into Mexico. “Houses are big near the border and then get smaller and smaller as you go further south and then they are not houses anymore (they’re shacks),” Lindroos said. “You can see how things change economically as you go further south. You see it change drastically in the span of one-and-a-half hours.” The high school students were split into two teams with one team building a two-bedroom home for a family with a one-year-old child and the second team building a three-bedroom home for a family with three kids, two of whom work in Tijuana. “One of those kids is 17,” said Lindroos, also 17. “The mom is hoping this home will get the whole family working together again.” The fathers of both families each earn $10 a week; one fixes irrigation pipes and the other picks strawberries.

Ah yes, a New Year and all those resolutions you don’t keep. Attending to your eye health is one resolution you should keep. A complete eye examination is your most valuable tool in ensuring a lifetime of healthy eyes and clear vision. To provide you with the best eye and vision care, your Optometrist needs to know a few things about your health, how you use your eyes, and any unusual symptoms you may be experiencing. Make it clear what you want or what is bothering you at the beginning of the exam. Some people wait until the very end of the exam to mention what is really worrying them. Perhaps this is from embarrassment or the feeling that the complaint is trivial, but the Optometrist will be better able to give the problem the time and attention it requires if it is mentioned early. Few complaints are silly and even minor symptoms can be important. Know your medications or, even better, bring a list. Knowledge of your family history of eye disorders is extremely helpful. If you have a complaint like a headache, try to describe it as accurately as possible: time of onset, duration, frequency etc. Be able to describe your work environment. Knowing the distance to your computer or desk makes it much easier to prescribe and design the appropriate spectacle lens. Consider the hobbies and sports in which you participate. You may use your eyes differently for recreational activities than you do for your job, or you may require suitable eye protection. Don’t forget to bring the glasses that you wear every day along with any old ones that you still may use. Any other old glasses may be brought in and donated for use in third world countries. Do not wear a lot of eye makeup. If you wear contact lenses, inquire if the optometrist will want you to wear them to the exam. This varies from one optometrist to another and with the purpose of the visit. Ask if your eyes will be dilated. If the answer is “yes”, avoid driving yourself to the examination and consider bringing sunglasses. And finally, relax! Eye examinations are not painful, and can even be fun.

Mind your manners There has been a considerable amount of conversation in the pages of the Oak Bay News lately about the level of conviviality we are sharing with our neighbours. Rude and obnoxious behaviour are not the norm for our area, but there is significantly more navel gazing going on as of late. Our reliance on smartphones, iPads and other tablets has led us to be much more insular in our attitude toward others. As we “appear” to be more social, tweeting, texting, sharing our photos instantly in any number of ways, we are actually distancing ourselves from society. Look around in the coffee shop and what do you see? Faces cast down, turned towards our technology. Even toddlers in strollers are happily poking away at screens while busy parents wheel by what, just a few years ago, would have attracted a small child. A dog here, a raised bed of flowers there, petals falling from a cherry tree. All things missed by a child whose attention is instead drawn toward colourful characters and synthesized sound from a screen. Much can be learned from being aware of your surroundings. You’re safer for one, if you keep your eyes on traffic, rather than a photo of your friend’s lunch popping up on your phone. You may notice an elderly person in need of help crossing the street, or carrying groceries. You may notice a youngster wandering away from the playground. You may notice the face of the server in the coffee shop, smiling, offering help. You may notice a friend sitting alone across the room, or perhaps, someone who may become a friend when a little conversation is started. We may want to raise the Tweed Curtain to wave good bye to those who don’t like it here, as one reader suggests in this week’s letters. But instead, let’s look up at them and smile, say hello and offer the best of ourselves to each other. That’s the Oak Bay way. What do you think? Johnson’s letter (Embarrassed too, April 9) about those who are embarrassed to live in our beautiful municipality. This will be one of the few times that council will come back to us with a quick decision and a statement confirming that “living in Oak Bay is a wonderful experience.”

Of course, those of us who call Oak Bay home already know this. In the meantime, I’d like to remind the writer that you have a choice. Our streets run in both directions and if you are not happy here, we’ll raise the curtain and wave good by. Rick Gonder Oak Bay

Think carefully before you buy a bunny As Easter is not far away many people are thinking of those adorable little bunnies and thinking they would make great pets for their children. They are cute and fluffy but they are a lot of work. As a bunny parent with more than 15 years experience, I can tell you that a child will soon tire of the daily chores needed to keep the creature happy and healthy. Unlike dogs or cats, rabbit habitats need daily cleaning. Water and food bowls need washing. A rabbit should not be put in a cage and forgotten. A rabbit needs plenty of free exercise daily and that in itself must be monitored. A rabbit could be a 10-year commitment and

once a child tires of it will there be a parent with enough time to take over the job? If not, what will happen to the bunny? If you are in this situation, please give the rabbit to a rescue or animal sanctuary. Do not let it go in the wild as that is an assured death sentence. A small white bunny was recently dropped by the highway in Sooke and despite efforts to catch it the rabbit ran. It was seen a few days later on the side of the road, dead. Please consider all of the facts and ask questions before you decide to adopt a rabbit. William Jesse Oak Bay

Resource industry leads to depletion I am writing in response to two letters that appeared in the Friday, March 7 edition of the Oak Bay News. The first stated that the Prosperity Mine proposal, turned down again on its second proposal, would have created ‘tens of thousands of secure, high-paying jobs’ in the region. Yet, not only are the numbers unproven, but the legacy of the resource industry in the area points to the opposite. Resource industry jobs often last only a generation or two at most before depletion, foreign competition and consolidation. What they leave behind is a much longer legacy of environmental degradation and, in this case, the exclusion and disenfranchisement of First Nations.

Floor Area Review Public Consultation April 23rd, 2014 Oak Bay is reviewing the Zoning Bylaw regulations governing single-family dwellings on standard lots (RS-4 and RS-5). The review is considering allowable floor area, massing controls, setbacks, and other guidelines that will impact how homes may be built or renovated in the future. The Floor Area Review Committee is seeking input and ideas from both the general public and industry. A prior input opportunity was held on December 11, 2013, where general ideas and recommendations were gathered, and those comments have been used over the last 4 months to help craft an early draft of potential regulation changes. This second opportunity on April 23rd will review the early draft and seek further input on direction. Both session times are open to the public, although each will have a specific focus: Session 1: 3:30-5:00 p.m. Targeted to Professionals: Planners, Developers, Architects, Builders, Residential Designers, or other professionals who have knowledge or experience with Oak Bay or other jurisdictional land use regulations. Session 2: 7:00-8:30 p.m. Targeted to the General Public: those who have an interest in house sizes, allowable floor area, allowable site coverage, streetscapes, or other aspects of massing for residential properties. Each session will use small facilitated groups for input and questions. You may also bring a written submission or notes to leave with the committee for review. Light refreshments will be provided. Camosun Chargers Elyse Matthews (basketball) and Lucas Dellabough (volleyball) were named co-winners of the prestigious Presidents’ Cup at the school’s annual athletic ceremony last Thursday (April 10). The award recognizes Camosun athletes who excel on both athletic and academic fronts. Matthews, 23, a fourth-year wing and a student in the environmental technology program, earned a perfect 9.0 GPA in the fall while playing on a team that made playoffs this season. In February, she was selected as the 2nd Team AllStar in the PACWEST provincials. It was Matthews’ second consecutive year winning the Presidents’ Cup. “This represents, for me, just how hard I work both athletically and academically. It really showed me that I’m able to succeed at both athletics and academics, which has been a high priority for me and one of my goals,” she said. Dellabough, a second-year rightside, is a student in the associate science program who earned a perfect 9.0 GPA last semester, and had a cumulative 8.765 GPA

As my second year with the Chargers, I was more comfortable getting to know everyone and was able to balance my schedule to have time with the team on and off the court,” he said. “I was on an incredible inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic team that made the game more fun and life in general

Politicians serve Easter meal at Our Place

ocal politicians join Our Place volunteers to serve more than 1,000 Easter meals to the city’s homeless and working poor on Thursday (April. 17). Special guests and politicians will roll up their sleeves to dish out a full meal of turkey, potatoes, garden veg and all the trimmings. “Easter is a time of transformation, celebration and belonging,” said Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. “Serving a special meal to those who might otherwise go without is just one small way of showing that we are here to listen, share and support.” The kitchen at Our Place expects to serve a hearty meal consisting of 1,000 lbs. of turkey, 500 lbs. of potatoes, 250 lbs. of stuffing, 200 lbs. of vegetables, 25 gallons of gravy, 55 lbs. of cranberry sauce and 1,500 cups of coffee.
