Mayors and councillors tackle ferries and emergency planning CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
Fukushima, fire sprinklers and BC Ferries were among the many issues brought up by municipalities last weekend at a conference which saw nearly 300 Vancouver Island politicians at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. The 65th annual Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) conference brought together city councillors, mayors, regional district directors and MLAs who discussed and debated issues pertinent to their respective communities. “People are energized about a lot of things,” said Regional District of Nanaimo chair and French Creek resident Joe Stanhope, who sits on the AVICC executive and helped form this past weekend’s agenda. Stanhope said the hot button issue of the conference was BC Ferries. See PASSED TO UBCM, page A9
MP warns delegates JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
The future of rail service on Vancouver Island was not an official agenda item this past weekend, but MP James Lunney sent a letter to AVICC delegates urging them not to take any action regarding the ICF. Regional District of Nanaimo chair Joe Stanhope said he received a letter from Lunney addressed to the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities delegates on the eve of their annual conference this past weekend in Parksville and Qualicum Beach. The NEWS has obtained a copy of the letter. “I can assure you that agreement (between VIA Rail and Southern Rail to re-start passenger service) is in the final days of completion,” wrote Lunney. “I urge you to put aside disappointments and please do not take upon yourselves actions that would scuttle the future of rail on Vancouver Island. If you do, you carry that responsibility into history.” See ICF’S AGM CLOSED TO PUBLIC, page A9

STARTING POINT
Public invited to Parksville budget talks
Parksville city council is inviting residents to attend the second public budget deliberation meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. This special Committee of the Whole meeting will be held in the Forum at city hall. A city hall news release said the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Draft 2014 Final Financial Plan currently before council. The release said public input is an important part of the financial planning process and council would like your comments and suggestions. If you can’t make it to the meeting Wednesday, you can submit comments by April 17 through e-mail (info@parksville.ca) or on Facebook http://facebook.com/cityparksville. — NEWS Staff/City of Parksville
Think and seek info before burning
The Coastal Fire Centre is encouraging the public to exercise caution when doing any outdoor burning. Open burning restrictions will be in place later this spring, so officials say now is a good time for residents to clean up their yards. Almost all wildfires that start at this time of year are humancaused and are therefore preventable, said a news release from the fire centre. Homeowners and industry personnel are encouraged to visit the Wildfire Management Branch website (www.bcwildfire.ca/ Prevention) and consult the B.C. FireSmart manual. Before conducting a burn, residents are urged to check with their local fire department, municipality and regional district to see if any open burning restrictions or bylaws are in effect. — Submitted by Wildfire Management Branch

MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Doctors put in tough spot ‘It completely shifts the onus of liability (on physicians)’ CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
NEWS FILE PHOTO
Doctors say Health Canada’s new system for medical marijuana puts physicians in the position of being gatekeepers.
Changing medical marijuana regulations have left users in a smoky state of mind and doctors fuming with rage. Initially, new Health Canada legislation was supposed to put an end to home grown pot productions directing nearly 40,000 medical marijuana users to buy their green from large-scale commercial operations with a prescription-like document from their doctor. But a last minute federal court injunction March 21 halted Health Canada’s plan providing temporary reprieve to users — many of whom

feared they wouldn’t be able to afford the new system. Health Canada responded by issuing a news release stating they intend on appealing the court’s order. However, amidst the haze of political gridlock between the federal government, federal court and licence-holding medical marijuana users at least one thing is clear: British Columbian physicians are outraged. “It completely shifts the onus of liability (on physicians),” Doctors of B.C. president-elect Bill Cavers told The NEWS in a phone interview recently from Victoria. “We’re being dumped in the middle of this expedite.” Cavers said under the old system patients applied to the medical marijuana program through Health Canada with a signature from their doctor to acknowledge they knew the patient was using pot for medical purposes. “The new regulations are totally different,” said Cavers, explaining the changes would see doctors essentially become “gatekeepers” of medical marijuana while Health Canada’s role becomes more obsolete. “Physicians are now being asked to provide a medication (marijuana) with no support or training,” said Cavers, adding Health Canada has not conducted any studies validating the use of medical pot. “Every other prescription drug has to go through rigorous testing from Health Canada (before it’s available to patients), why is marijuana exempt from that?” Cavers said regardless of his personal opinions on pot, “if it’s going to be a medical product there should be the same due diligence to it that is applied to every other prescription drug.” He is calling for guidelines from Health Canada. “We (physicians) want more evaluation on medical marijuana as a treatment for conditions: when it should be used, when it shouldn’t be used, dosage and long term effects.” Cavers said physicians represent high quality patient care. “We want to do our patients well, we want people to get the treatment they need, we want to keep people safe and we are not being given the tools we need to make those decisions,” he said. “Actual data is woefully absent.” When asked how he sees the future of medical marijuana, Cavers didn’t sound optimistic. “The net result will be a reduction in access to this product because physicians will be reluctant to take on the liability,” he said. “It’s a free for all right now and physicians are smack in the middle of a debate.” Dana Larsen, director of Sensible B.C. said the new regulations put doctors in an “awkward” position. “A lot of doctors don’t want to get involved,” said Larsen. “They don’t necessarily want to become “the pot doctor” and moreover doctors don’t prescribe plants —it’s just not what they do.” As a result, Larsen said he is seeing a lot of “profiteering” pop up through clinics specializing in access to marijuana such as the web-based Do No Harm Clinic. Do No Harm Clinic’s webpage states: “Even if your own physician is uncomfortable with Medical Marijuana, we can still help. A referral is not required.” Larsen said clinics like this are “profitable as they are allowed to charge an administrative fee.” Do No Harm Clinic charges $35 per month. “I recommend this website to people who ask me for options,” said Larsen. “It can be great for some people but extremely costly for others.”

MP salutes vessels that fight crime The HMCS Nanaimo, which has a strong association with the mid-Island, is back in Canada after helping fight organized crime in Central America. Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney took the opportunity to highlight the operation in the House of Commons asking Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, James Bezan about the participation of two Canadian Navy ships. “Transnational criminal organizations use the Caribbean base in Central American as trans-shipment areas for illicit traffic in drugs, weapons, money and people,” said Lunney. “Illicit trafficking is a significant source of revenue for organized crime and a growing threat to national, regional and international security, and therefore to North America and Canada.” “As part of a multinational campaign to combat and prevent illicit trafficking, Canada has contributed significantly to Operation CARIBBE,” he continued. “Today HMCS Whitehorse and HMCS Nanaimo return home from participating The Canadian Armed in this operaForces made major contion.” Lunney tributions to Operation then asked CARIBBE and stopped Bezan about more than 5,000 kilograms what kind of cocaine of work was performed by JAMES BEZAN these two vessels. “Our men and women in the Canadian Armed Forces demonstrate leadership abroad,” Bezan said. “Their work is critical to the success of these joint operations. Taking part in joint operations with our allies helps keep illicit drugs from entering Canada and has a significant impact on the safety of our citizens. The Canadian Armed Forces made major contributions to Operation CARIBBE and stopped more than 5,000 kilograms of cocaine. Bravo Zulu to the men and women in uniform.” Outside the House Lunney added: “The HMCS Nanaimo and its crew have a strong association with the City of Nanaimo. They are a regular visitor for our Empire Days celebration, often accompanied by HMCS Whitehorse. I know Islanders will join me in extending our heartfelt thanks for their service. “These Coastal Defence vessels train on our coast and I am sure I speak for all Islanders in stating how proud we are of their contribution to this international mission.” — NEWS Staff/MP James Lunney’s office

It was a beautiful day for a young bald eagle to be released to the wild. A large crowd gathered Saturday afternoon to watch Buckerfield’s Parksville manager Andrew Gent release the eagle, who had been living at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre since last July. The eagle was discovered in the Port Alberni area, lying in a mud puddle unable to fly. The eagle was brought back to health at the centre and began flying again in the centre’s Eagle Flight Cage. After releasing the young eagle, it circled high above the new releasing area at the centre in the bright blue sky for some time.

Stanhope said rail service and issues surrounding the Island Corridor Foundation were not part of the formal program for the AVICC conference. “There was discussion in the corridors but it didn’t come up before the conference at all,” Stanhope said Monday. “It was not on the agenda and it didn’t come up.” The RDN has a no-confidencein-the-ICF motion on the agenda for its regular board meeting April 22. The ICF’s annual general meeting is set for this Thursday, and Stanhope said he has asked for a legal opinion on whether that AGM should be open to media and the public. While he will be attending as a member of the ICF, Stanhope said he has been told the ICF’s AGM is a closed-door affair. “It should be open to the public,” said Stanhope. “And a lot of (RDN) directors are quite interest-

meetings,” said Bruce. “It’s the way the constitution of the ICF is set up.” The ICF (owners of the track and accompanying lands) announced April 8 that VIA and Southern had reached a tentative agreement on re-starting passenger rail service on Vancouver Island. VIA officials told The NEWS there is no agreement. While others have said it will take upwards of $150 million, Bruce said April 8 suggested the $20 million of funding previously promised by three levels of government was enough to get the railway in safe condition for passenger service. The railway stopped operating passenger service in 2011 due to track safety concerns.

Who to cheer?
I
t’s playoff time in the NHL and hockey fans in two of Canada’s three largest cities are on the outside looking in. Both the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs could not squeeze into the 16-team postseason. For the Leafs, a colossal collapse in March spelled their demise. For the Canucks, a good first couple of months disintegrated into a season of odd incidents and poor play. Both have quickly turned to big names in the game to help turn around their fortunes. The Canucks have brought iconic former captain Trevor Linden back into the fold after he spent six years in the hockey wilderness. The Leafs have secured Brendan Shanahan from the league office, a hall-of-famer who has won both a Stanley Cup and Olympic gold. The big question now is whether these two greats on the ice, now with grey hair sprinkling their former mullets, can turn around the fortunes of these franchises. Linden’s task looks larger than that of Shanahan’s. The game has passed the Canucks. It’s all about speed and size now, and the Canucks’ core players, specifically the Sedin brothers, have never been known for their fleetness of foot. They are smart, skilled and tougher than they are given credit for — they are not, however, fast. One could argue neither of these big announcements from the Canucks or Leafs amounts to a hill of beans. Even someone with a smidgeon of hockey sense could tell you the Leafs need reliable defencemen. Shanny going to play D? Does Linden have a time machine to get the speedy Pavel Bure back on the ice? These announcements are window dressing, at best. Bring in a big name, parade him in front of the cameras, mollify the disappointed season ticket holders. With huge, no-trade player contracts stifling both teams, we wish Linden and Shanahan luck. So, for whom do we cheer when the quest for the greatest trophy in pro sports begins on Wednesday? We held out hope it could be the Phoenix Coyotes with their ownership link to Qualicum Beach but, alas, they did not make it to the dance. The last remaining Canadian-based team, Les Habitants? No thanks. We will scour the rosters, find the team with the highest percentage of B.C. and Canadian-born players, and go that route. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters PARKSVILLE CARES ABOUT SCHOOLS TOO
I’m getting frustrated with the amount of news coverage that the possible closure of Qualicum Beach Elementary School is generating. I have one child in French immersion at Parksville Elementary School, and one entering French immersion Kindergarten next year. Good on the residents of Qualicum Beach for rallying to save their school; they are vocal, they are outspoken, and they are proactive. We in Parksville may need to copy these behaviours, or we may find ourselves with no schools to speak of. Out of many of the elementary schools set for closure, it seems that QBES is one of the oldest, least populated, and most outdated schools (i.e., no fire suppression system). So why is there nothing in the papers about the closure of PES? The latest and greatest is to not only close it, but now split the French program in two, making all French classrooms split between multiple grades to desperately try to make it work with the intensely tiny pool of awesomely qualified French teachers we currently have employed at PES. I enrolled my children at PES not only because of the French program, but because back then, there was talk of closing Kwalikum Secondary. I wanted to ensure my kids got a good education at a school with no risk of closure. This was a no-brainier since PES was full, and the only French program. Oops. Am I wrong in thinking that maybe all those years ago, a high school clo-

sure at a relatively poorly attended school would have saved what I think is precious — our elementary schools? Maybe, maybe not. But if the squeaky wheel gets the grease, Qualicum will have a whole bunch of half-empty schools, while the rest of Oceanside scrambles to drive miles from school to school to pick up our kids who may now be split up even at the elementary level. That, or all those families living in Parksville currently paying taxes, and shelling out for pricey kids’ programs, and adding jobs to the local economy will just say “enough is enough,” and move somewhere with jobs and schools. Education at elementary level is priceless, yet we now have a terribly high price on it that we can’t pay. I understand there needs to be school closures. I understand we can’t pay the bill. But I am hoping these decisions aren’t made based on who yells the loudest, but on what helps the most children get the best education. Parksville, maybe we need to step up and rally, louder and prouder, to let the powers that be know that we care about our schools, too. SHARON TODD Parksville
UNHAPPY WITH QB COUNCIL’S ANGER Council meetings aren’t high on my list of entertaining events, but when a hot topic is on the agenda the action can be quite stimulating and unpredictable, as was the case at Qualicum Beach’s town council
meeting April 7 when the last agenda item burst forth for debate. Tempers flared, sparks flew, curt remarks erupted. What was most disconcerting was the anger of certain council members that was directed at the public or more specifically, at residents who have been following the proposed boundary change amendment with concern. After the mayor concluded first reading with a recorded vote of the usual three in favour and two opposed to first reading for changing the Growth Containment Boundary, he adjourned the meeting and residents were permitted two minute comments. It was clear from the residents’ comments that they understood more about the issues surrounding this amendment and the numerous implications resulting from a boundary change than the majority of council. Observing the majority of council’s irresponsible management of the amendment process increased the concerns of those present. I wonder if the town has the ability to represent the best interests of our community? A public hearing is scheduled for April 22, even though the majority of council don’t fully understand what they are voting on. Residents should contact RDN directors with their comments and concerns about this amendment since the RDN directors will also be debating this issue and have the final word on the amendment.

until you ask yourself and elected officials these key questions: Will it be affordable? Who would be utilizing train services? Will the schedule be convenient? Would visitor’s transportation budget be nil after arriving by ferry? Is there an understanding the railway would have to be utilized by freight trains as well as passenger to be feasible? Do you want coal trains to be running through your town, city or backyard? What will happen to my property value? The only sustainable option for this corridor in my opinion is a clean, affordable, easy to maintain, paved multi-use, non-motorized, trail running from Victoria to Courtenay and possibly beyond. A trail would open many doors to a wider tourism market and provide residents with a

safe corridor to travel freely. This trail would attract cyclists, hikers, equestrians’, geocachers, athletes and families from around the world. Other potential revenues could stem from marathons, triathlons, races and other athletic events. New business potentials will arise across Vancouver Island along the corridor such as bike and bike trailer rentals, GPS rentals for geocaching, campgrounds, hostels and the list goes on. All businesses would see increased revenue. The trail is accessible from airports, BC Ferries and all municipalities. This trail would put Vancouver Island on the world eco-tourism map and invite the world to explore beautiful British Columbia and Vancouver Island in a unique way. MEGAN OLSEN Parksville

THE EVOLUTION OF A LOCAL BAND — NEW ALBUM NOW AVAILABLE ON ITUNES
Counting Time carefully adds key members Former paramedic from Qualicum Beach reconnected with art LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Megan Keene sang alongside Sharon Tomczyk for years in a local choir, but she didn’t recognize the singer had a remarkable and gripping voice until she saw her on stage in Errington. “For 12 years of singing with her right beside me, I never heard her voice,” she said. “And then one day, I went to the Coffee House and she was singing with Counting Time, they had just started up, and she just about knocked me off my seat. To hear the voice that this woman has was an amazing experience.” Keene joined the band Counting Time in 2012 and the group’s debut album, called What’s Coming Over Me, was released in March this year. The band was co-founded by singer songwriter Tomczyk and guitarist and songwriter, Hugh Yardley. Tomczyk moved to the area when she was young and although she always loved music and singing, she became a paramedic at the age of 19 in Qualicum Beach. About seven years ago she began to reconnect with her artistic side, giving up emergency services, writing a book (which was published in 2009) and holding music jams at her house. Yardley, who she met at local martial arts classes, was one of the people who attended the musical evenings. Yardley is from Victoria originally and began playing the guitar when he was 13. He played in a few bands and then, following an injury, took some time off from music. He became reacquainted with his musical side in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He took a luthiers course and built his own guitar and taught music lessons at a private school for five years. A few years after moving back to Victoria, he decided to take a job in this area. After a few musical evenings at the Tomczyk house, Tomczyk and Yardley realized it was more than just a hobby for them, and their music was starting to sound pretty good. “Playing music evolved from once-aweek to twice-a-week, to seven times a week,” said Tomczyk. “We decided we have a deep passion for music and tried to formulate a band and wanted to make a CD,” Yardley said. Counting Time was formed in 2009 and the band began playing at local events and venues. Keene has lived on the Island for the majority of her life, primarily in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area and Nanaimo. She has always loved to sing and after graduation she joined a choir with her mom, called Every Voice Singers. Twelve years later she’s still with the

far exceeded the group’s expectations. “Our music has a lot of intricacies and the people who seem to enjoy it the most are the people who seem to really get music and understand what’s been put into it.” Tomczyk said the CD reinforced to her that she’s always been an artist and it is a sort of declaration to herself of who she is today. Although she was once a coy and quiet artist, people now stop her and say, “I didn’t know you sang?” she revealed. “I was a timid singer and now my voice is on that album and everybody hears it.” Members of the group feel that music has done a lot for them mentally and emotionally and that’s why, Tomczyk said, they like to give back to the community. Tomczyk is co-founder of The Soundgarden in Coombs, where musicians and music lovers come together on a regular basis for events, open mic nights, workshops and claseses. She also helps run a youth jam at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville and is finishing up a Youth Rock Band Project. For more on The Soundgarden visit www.thesoundgarden.org. AT THE SHADY REST PUB ON SATURDAY NIGHT
Lazy Mike celebrates release of a new CD Harp-driven blues band is led by Mike Mallon LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
There will be plenty of Loving Hugging Kissing at the Shady Rest Pub this Saturday night as Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners throw a CD release party. The new album, called Rollin’ Through this World, includes 10 songs, half of which are originals and half that are covers, including one by Canadian band Powder Blues called Loving Hugging Kissing. Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners formed in 2007 and are known as a harpdriven blues band. The group is lead by vocalist and harmonica player Mike Mallon, who played with the popular rock ‘n roll cover group The Maloomba Boogie Band for 22 years. Bob Berry sings and plays bass with the group, Mark Comerford plays guitar and sings, and Ryan Connell plays the drums. The band’s new album is the third one they have produced, and includes a Junior Wells song called Messin’ with the Kid and a favourite tune by blues legend Duke Robillard. Mallon said he’s always writing music, as is the bass player Berry, but the original tunes that made the album were fresh ones, and he’s pleased with the outcome.

“We’re still trying to do the same sort of rocking blues stuff and good time music,” he said, “but I always think when I write songs they are better than the songs I wrote before.”
The music is very danceable, Mallon said, and he’s eager to see how the crowd reacts at The Shady this Saturday night. “I’ve played for years as a bar band and all kinds of stuff and the way you always

KSS GRAD FASHION SHOW ON THURSDAY, APRIL 24
52 students to model 113 outfits This event attracts hundreds to the civic centre every year AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Beach is about to get fashionable with the annual Kwalikum Secondary School grad fashion show fundraiser on April 24. “The students will be modelling a lot of beautiful clothes by a lot of mostly local stores,” said parent organizer Fiona Wratislav. The long running event attracts hundreds to the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre every year for one of the biggest grad fundraisers. This year 52 students will model 113 outfits from a couple dozen stores, almost all in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. “There will also be lots of great prizes, donors have been really generous,” she said, adding, “There will be games, balloons with prizes and people can buy tickets for an iPad raffle in the end of May.” Donations for prizes and auction items include goods and services like a spa night at Tigh-Na-Mara. The evening of entertainment will include both a silent and live auction during intermission, retailers showcasing their merchandise and fashions, a concession and student performances. Along with the latest local fashions, as has become a tradition, they will also feature one prom dress made by a Grade 11 student who is graduating early and formal wear from the SOS Grad Ware program. The SOS (Society of Organized Services) offers complete ensembles, including accessories, for $5 each and they recently recieved a huge new donation of 60 new dresses, some of which still have the tags on. Stop at the SOS office at 245 West Hirst Avenue or call 250-248-2093 to make an appointment to view the clothing anonymously.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Fleet of iconic bikes arrives in Parksville Local shop is one of the first in the country to offer these British motorcycles CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
Bayview Motorcycles has brought a piece of history to Parksville. Just last week the shop became one of the first in Canada to receive a fleet of iconic British bikes: Royal Enfield’s Continental GT “Cafe” Racers. “It’s a big thing in the motorcycle world,” said Lori Nielsen, who co-owns Bayview Motorcycles with her husband, Paul, and also became the first Canadian woman to own one of the bright red, vintage-style bikes. Paul Nielsen said the cultural significance of the bike is “huge.” “Back in the post-war era young Englishmen would race these motorcycles from cafe to cafe just as their name suggests,” he said. “They called themselves rockers — they were young and rebellious; part of a rock and roll subculture who wanted fast bikes to reach ‘the ton’ (motorcycle jargon for 100 miles per hour).” Paul Nielsen explains rockers wore black leather jackets and motorcycle boots; a sharp contrast to a conflicting culture deemed “the mods” who rode scooters, wore suits and more clean cut attire and were more concerned with
soul, rhythm and blues music. “The cafe racers represent nostalgia,” he said, admiring the new shipment of bikes, of which there are only three left until their May order arrives. “It was a glamorous, kind of romantic time in history.” The Nielsen’s first saw the stylish bike at Royal Enfield’s official unveiling in England at the Ace Cafe last fall, where Lori said she “immediately knew (they) had to bring them back to Parksville.” “They’re basic, simple bikes and we love Royal Enfield’s products,” she said. “They’re affordable, they have that retrovintage feel and they’re just really, really cool.” According to Paul Nielsen, the cafe racer is just under 400 pounds, which is relatively light in comparison to most motorcycles which average at least 500 to 600 pounds. Additionally he said they have a bigger engine, fuel injection, electric ignition, paiole suspension, brembo brakes — and “they’re sexy bikes.” Moreover, Royal Enfield’s are the oldest continuous production motorcycles in the world. “That means Royal Enfield has never stopped producing them,” he explains. “They’ve been around since the late 1800s.” The Nielsen’s opened Bayview Motorcycles in 2012. It’s the second bikerelated shop they’ve owned — their last was called Nanaimo Motorcycle Salvage

which they closed 18 years ago. “Once you run a business for too long you inevitably become complacent and often lose your drive for it,” said Lori Nielsen, adding the couple has owned a few different businesses since then but eventually went back to their “passion and love of motorcycles.” When asked why she’s drawn to mo-
torcycles, she said “freedom — there’s nothing like getting on your motorcycle and just going.” Bayview Motorcycles is located along Highway 19A at 1480 Industrial Way (beside VIP Auto Shine). They are open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by, call the shop at 250-586-1903 or visit their website at www.bayviewmotorcycles.ca.
Cut-rate mortgage could lock you into rigid contract If you’re in the market for a mortgage, and have less than 20 per cent down payment, then you might want to get that mortgage before May. For the first time in more than a decade, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is raising premiums for insuring mortgages on Canadian homes: an average 15 per cent. Private insurer Genworth followed suit with a matching increase. Canadian homebuyers are required to have mortgage insurance if they have less than 20 per cent equity in their homes. Chamber members had a chance to exercise their democratic right to vote when a last minute nomination led to a nail biting election Thursday evening. The Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce saw a full turn out for their annual general meeting where a new executive and board of directors was sworn in at the Quality Resort Bayside. Nine candidates — each selected by a nominations committee — seemed confident they would make up the next board as none had speeches prepared in the case somebody was nominated from the floor. However, Angela Giannotti nominated Bobbi Laird and an election ensued minutes later. “It was intense,” said Mark Jones, one of the candidates surprised by the election. Jones, and the other nine candidates, had a short campaign trail consisting of a two minute speech before members cast their ballots. Burden said it was a fair election because everybody was “equally unprepared” to make a speech. In the end, the original nine candidates selected by the nominations committee were elected: Jones, Donna Andres, Kelly Cudney, Bill McKinney, Beth Ross, Garry Bentham,

Ashley Henry, Andy Lankester and Crystal McMillan. Sue Battle and Lisa Leger are completing their second year term. The executive was acclaimed and now consists of president Robynne Shaw, president-elect Bonnie Wallis, vice-president Terry Kerr, treasurer Al McLean and past president Rudi Widdershoven. MLA Michelle Stilwell swore in the new executive and board of directors. Burden confirmed there were two ballot counts and all ballots were destroyed after the election. “The fact that we even had an election is a reflection of how engaged this organization is,” he said. “It either means we’re doing a bad job and people want to join to fix it, or we’re doing a really good job and people want to get involved — personally, I think we’re doing pretty good.” • What was once known as “the Fantasy Auction” is looking for a new name — and the chamber is calling on the community for help. “Change is a good thing,” said PDCC executive director Kim Burden. “We’re looking at rebranding the whole event.” Burden said this will be the 30th year the chamber has organized the auction, traditionally a black-tie event with a sit down dinner followed by dancing with more than 100 items for auction.

Brickyard Community Park
Directions to Brickyard Community Park:
Brickyard Community Park nestles beside a sheltered bay on the tip of the Nanoose Peninsula in the community of Fairwinds. This delightful park includes woodland and a small cove much favoured by locals as a sheltered place to walk, sunbathe and swim in the waters warmed at high tide by the smooth granite rocks that abound the cove. JILL DAVIES Special to The NEWS
However, the rural peace has not always been this way. Back in 1911 a brick yard was located by the cove. Clay was brought from the meadows that in time became the golf course. Coal to fire the kiln was brought by barges that were then used to ship the bricks to their destination. For those curious to explore the past, take time to check out the woodland above the bay. As you approach the cove along the short and meandering trail, on your right you will see the remains of the concrete piles that once supported the Pelton wheel installed to generate electricity for the brick works. There is also evidence of the rails and cross-ties of the railroad that ran between the meadows and the brick works. Just above the beach is a small circle of coal dust and close-by, bricks that were part of the kiln are now intertwined among the roots of the impressive maples and Coastal Douglas fir. In early October, as the maples turn to yellow, red and gold, Brickyard Cove draws families, dog walkers and those who want to enjoy a stroll through the park. At low tide the water in the bay glitters in the sunlight. The beach is pebbled, scattered with rocks and larger stones intermingled with hundreds of fragments of red brick. Beneath the glaciated rock is a small patch of sandy beach that is just perfect for small feet to go paddling. Take the trail that leads beyond the cove to the rocks and then to the headland. There the view South looks across the bay to Wallis Point and in the distance the Nanaimo headland. Looking over the water to the North East there is an attractive cluster of small islands that form part of the Ballenas - Winchelsea Archipelago. Misted in the distance to the north lie Lasqueti and Texada and beyond, as ever, the Sunshine Coast and distant mountains. On the headland are two benches thoughtfully placed ‘in memory’ of loved ones. In the crystal clear light of this early fall morning, for lovers of our Oceanside beaches, it is a glorious place to sit, gaze, listen to the lapping waves and be at peace with the universe. Who was on the beach: A couple strolled hand in hand along the trail while on the
• At the Petrocan on Highway 19 turn right, if coming from Nanaimo, onto Northwest Bay Rd • At the top of the hill take the first right turn onto Powder Point Rd • Follow the road for 5.5 km to Fairwinds Golf Club • Turn right (just past the golf club parking lot) onto Andover Rd. • Take the first left turn into Amberwood Lane • There is an RDN community park sign marking the trail to Brickyard Cove • Parking is limited so park on the wide grass shoulder close to or beside the traffic circle • A sign requests that dogs are kept under control; another sign carries warnings about harvesting shellfish • A short easily accessible trail winds through the woodland to Brickyard Bay

beach, Vicki and Walter Voros were enjoying the company of their grand-daughter. Elodie is rising too and armed with bucket and spade was crouched low turning over stones to discover, with all the joy and inquiry of a small person, the small crabs and occasional purple sea star hidden below. Among her treasures was a skeletal purple crab that had washed up on the beach, a rubbery bubble of kelp, a feather and a pine cone. Vicki said, ‘This is a wonderful place. On a summer’s evening we bring a picnic and swim off the rocks. We love to watch the birds. There are eagles in the high trees. And once when we were swimming, a heron almost landed on Walter’s head! Now Elodie is getting bigger, it’s the perfect place for her to play and share
our delight in the world around us.’ What might you see there in October? In the woodland the huge maples are displaying their fall glory; there are stands of tall Coastal Douglas firs, arbutus and mature Garry oaks with one beside the water spreading its branches over the rocks. Beneath the canopy snowberries still glimmer in the shade and the summer honeysuckle is dying back. On the beach, a myriad of marine creatures lurk and scuttle beneath the stones. Oysters cling to the rocks. From the headland, watch for harbour seals and the returning sea lions that gracefully arch through the waves. If you are lucky you may spot a pod of passing orcas.

JOHN D. BARTON
(1931-2014) On the morning of April 5th, John died peacefully with family beside him. He leaves Lesley and their three children; Juley, Reid (Donna), Alan (Kelly) -- grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, Adam, Patrick, Chris, Stephanie, Samuel and Joe, and great grandchildren Haley and William. John was born in Saskatoon to Donald and Evelyn Barton. From an early age his keen interest in radio led to his first job at CKRD in Red Deer, as he was finishing High School. For the next sixty years he did what he loved: working at the microphone doing morning shows on CHED, CKDA, CJCA, CHFI and then standing in front of the camera on such television shows as ‘What’s The Good Word’, ‘Hot Hands’ and ‘Pitfall’. He also showed his immense talent at the drawing board teaching at various Art Schools around the province, on television and as creative director at advertising agencies. John was an artist, a gifted man, a private man with a big melodious voice and an even bigger heart. We will love him always...as he loved us. Truly the “best of the best. At John’s request there will be a family burial service. A celebration of his life to be held in the summer. The Barton family wish to thank the entire team at Jubilee Hospital Cancer Clinic and especially Dr. Nicol MacPherson, and Vancouver’s Dr. Denegri. You have been remarkable! Our thanks also to our family doctor Peter Innes. We are in your debt. Thank you so much. In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria Hospitals Foundation or to the B.C. Cancer Agency would be appreciated.
DON THOMPSON February 11, 1929 – April 5, 2014
It is with p r o f o u n d sadness that we announce that Nut Bar M o u n t a i n has lost its President. On Saturday, April 5th, 2014 Donald John George Thompson’s chainsaw went quiet for the last time. He will always be remembered for his whimsical folk art carvings and his painting (not bad for an ex-sewer contractor). Don leaves behind his daughter Debbie (Ron) Smith, son Gary (Tracy) and grandsons Rusty and Jared as well as Kelly the dog! Will have to go it alone. Would like to send a special thanks to the staff at Port Alberni Hospital for their professional care. July 13, 2014 would have been the 55th anniversary of Don & Annelise, who passed on April 27, 2012, so it’s fitting that there will be a great memorial party at the Folkart Farms on Chatsworth Road. P.S. Jack Daniels drinkers everywhere are asked to have an extra shot for Pa.

January 31, 1943 – April 3, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandma, and sister Dorothy Donkersley. Dorothy lost a very short battle with cancer. Her husband and three sons were at her bedside when she passed away. She leaves behind her husband Ken and three sons Greg (Rhonda), Tim (Anne), Brad (Elsje) and her grandchildren, Chelsea, Adam, Sydney, Nash, Peyton, Duane, Rhythm, Josh, sister Peggy, and many friends. Dorothy was born in Edmonton and moved to Victoria as a teenager with her parents where she met Ken. She spent the last 25 years managing Ken-Dor Garden Centre, which she started with Ken. When she wasn’t working at the Garden Centre, she could usually be found at the golf course or spending the winter in Palm Springs. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and grandson Christian (2007).
May you forever rest in peace, Mom.
Service will be held at Yates Funeral Chapel

Genesis: charity and Bronze Gloves Parksville’s Rick Rae has big hopes for planned charity events and Vancouver Island boxing T YSON TAYLOR
We’ve got all kinds of athletes that come in here and work their butts off to improve, not just boxers.
sports@pqbnews.com
Genesis Boxing Club is coming off their first of a series of charity events, which they’ve been doing for the last four years, and will look to continue their support of local foundations. Their last event was held, along with Barry Creswell and the Nanaimo Boxing Club, on April 5. There were close to 100 people in attendance to see some of the local boxers taking part in the charity event. “I’ve been talking with Barry about getting together and doing an event like this every month,” said Genesis owner Rick Rae. “We’re really two of the only boxing clubs left on the Island and we’re hoping to get some more kids interested in boxing,” he said. “It’s all about the work ethic here for us. We’ve got all kinds of athletes that come in here and work their butts off to improve, not just boxers. We love to install a good work ethic in to these kids.”

Genesis owner Rick Rae invites everyone out May 3 to help local charities.
Both Rae and Creswell are looking to rebuild boxing back to
its glory days. Through the 1960s and ’70s, Vancouver Island had
its own Golden Gloves tournament, which was a big deal.
While the tournament has gone by the wayside, Rae believes there is a chance to bring it all back. “To be able to rebuild it to the point it was like it was back then, that would be huge. It was a big deal back then, with all the boxers that were around at the time, so we’re hoping we can bring it back,” Rae said. Genesis is hosting their next charity event on May 3 at their gym, which can hold up to 400 people. With the SPCA, MS Foundation and Food Bank all on the receiving end of the funds, Rae hopes to fill the gym for these great causes. “It’s always good to be able to give back to the community. A little bit of support can go a long way and everything adds up,” Rae said. See GYM GIVING, page A39

Buy a cord to help KSS golf and basketball Qualicum Beach students looking to deliver firewood to raise money T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
Members of both the Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) senior boys basketball and golf teams were on hand at the Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach this past weekend getting ready to deliver firewood. The fundraiser, which has been going on for over a month now, sees students from KSS cutting and delivering firewood to anyone looking to purchase some. It’s an event to raise money for this year’s trip the senior boys and girls basketball teams went on to California, as well as helping out the golf team to pay their entry fees into tournaments this year.
“We’ve been at it for a little while now and we’re finally to the point now where we can start shipping a lot of this wood off for folks who can store it and have it ready for use down the road,” KSS Athletic Director Butch Gayton said. “We owe a huge thanks to Gord Melissa here at Pheasant Glen for donating the wood and to Brian Slater at Windsor Plywood in Qualicum Beach for donating the wood splitter.” For those looking to purchase a cord of firewood ($150), you can contact Butch Gayton at KSS 250752-5651, extension number 160.

LAWN BOWLING
Busy outdoor lawn bowl season starting The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club is hosting a number of events to help get people to their facility T YSON TAYLOR
as it gives people a chance to see what the sport of lawn bowling is all about. They can roll some bowls then sit and have a coffee and see what a great facility we have,” Nielsen said. Opening day for the outdoor season is May 1. Along with the various club tournaments, the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club will be hosting two major open tournaments — mixed fours (May 10-11) and the mens and ladies triples (June 21-22). Teams from up and down the Island participate along with teams from the QBLBC. This year they will be introducing a new tournament, the ladies open pairs on June 13-14. This tournament will honour Sylvia Gibb, who passed away last year. “Sylvia was a long time member and great supporter of the club and just loved to be out lawn bowling. She was an inspiration to us all,” Nielsen said. In addition to the many tournaments, the QBLBC will be holding evening fun leagues throughout the summer along with various “special occasion” events. There will be ladies and men’s open draws held during weekdays and every Tuesday afternoon there will be a coach on hand for anyone looking to better their game. Add all this together with the major tournaments held by other clubs and the provincial tournaments and it all adds up to some non-stop bowling. “We hope to see a big turnout for our open house, we are always looking for new members to join us and you can contact Wilma at 250-752-3330 if you would like more information.”
sports@pqbnews.com
On April 5 and 6 the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club held its final tournament of the indoor season. Everyone bowled well but it was the Parksville team of Mick and Vicki Banks and Gary Robinson who not only took top spot but also claimed the Qualicum Foods Indoor Trophy. There were 12 teams in total and it proved to be another competitive tournament. The Parksville team of David Perry, Frankie Stemler and Ruby Bishop-Ryan took second place. Coming in third were Bill Davenport, Ruth Brodie and Martin Sichert, while fourth went to Gavin Reid, Pat Reid and Margaret Clow (both Qualicum Beach teams). Spring is here and another indoor lawn bowling season is winding down with the leagues finishing up this past week. With many of the leagues over-subscribed, the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club had to add more league dates. Tournaments were held each month and this provided for some good competition. “We were well supported by our club members along with bowlers from Nanaimo, Parksville and Port Alberni. Winter bowling is becoming a popular pastime and we hope to see you all back next winter,” said Jane Nielsen, coordinator for the QBLBC. Now their attention turns to the upcoming outdoor season. First up is an open house April 26-27 (12:30-3:30 p.m.). “The doors will be open to the public,
