he Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s 35th annual Thrash Regatta heads to the starting line in the waters off Cattle Point this Saturday, with distance racing and buoy racing through Sunday, April 13. Expected fleets include the Melges 24 and Martin 242 One Design Classes as well as four Performance Handicap Racing Fleet Divisions. Thrash is expected to draw more than 50 boats and more than 300 participants, not including the 30 volunteers involved in making the event happen. Thrash is the first buoy
racing regatta of the season, and provides an opportunity for crews from Esquimalt to Sidney, and as far away as Nanaimo, to thank heaven racing and spring are here, said David Motherwell, Thrash Regatta chair. Among the competitors is longtime Victoria resident David Richardson, not only winner of the 2013 Thrash, but someone who has taken part in almost all 35 races. The only one he missed was the year he was working for Canada 2, when they used Victoria as a training base in their lead up to the America’s Cup in Fremantle Australia in 1987.
Richardson was the overall winner in 2013 with Fetish – his venerable Hotfoot 27 – in around the buoys with a near perfect record of five wins in six races. Over the past 12 years, he has placed first in his division five times and finished no worse that third. 2013 was the second time that Richardson won the Ole Olson Trophy, awarded to the boat with the best overall results. Racing both days starts at 9:50 a.m. for the distance fleets, and the buoy racing fleets at 10 a.m. editor@oakbaynews.com

St. Mike’s to rebuild Arnold Lim News staff
After years of planning, four public consultations and a focus group session, the new St. Michaels University Junior school is coming into focus. Plans to replace the current facility nestled in a residential area in Oak Bay have been completed and will be submitted to Oak Bay council for a variance permit at a committee of the whole meeting April 22. “We are proposing a new building, razing what we have to the ground and starting from scratch,” said St. Michaels director of communications Laura Authier. “Our aspiration is two years to have the project start, but that is far from definite.” At its location since 1918, with the current building dating back to 1959, Authier said the time is now to replace the aging school. They are currently fundraising the capital needed for the multi-million dollar project. They hope to begin construction in two years and take under 16 months to finish, Authier said. “This location (has been) part of the school since 1918, we want to stay in that area but we want to make sure the building is evolving at the same place as our programs,” she said. “What we thought about teaching and learning in the 1960s and what we think about it now, the size, shape, design and layout of it are completely different than what we need today.”
Oak Bay News file
St. Michaels University Junior School students Amelia Hadfield, left, and Meghan Chestnut greet goat Miss Demenour at the school on Victoria Avenue. After 55 years in the same building, the school will be renovated to accommodate a modern curriculum. The proposed building will however, need to get through council first. They are looking for an extra 30-centimetre (one-foot) side yard set back variance on either side of the building and to address traffic issues and the potential for parking problems, especially for the neighbours of the primarily residential area. Oak Bay Coun. Tara Ney, who attended the consultations, hopes an agreement can be reached for the proposed Paul Merrick-designed facility featuring access to outdoor spaces, increased interaction between classrooms and a 38-spot underground parking
lot to help mitigate the potential for traffic and parking issues. “Philosophically, it is a wonderful idea for an educational facility. It’s like a campus connected to the environment,” she said. “It’s a marvelous educational concept. Everyone would want their child to be in this kind of learning environment. I feel positive if we can find the right platform to work through the thorny issues, good solutions will materialize.” The proposed facility is scheduled to open in time for the 2017-2018 academic year. alim@vicnews.com

Rotary awards high honour

The Rotary Club of Oak Bay continued on its path to honour those who provide “service above self” with a recent award ceremony. The Rotary Club of Oak Bay presented University of Victoria student Steven Wong with a Paul Harris Fellow Medal and citation. After graduating from Oak Bay High with honours, Wong attended the University of Victoria and continued his association with Rotary by becoming active in the Rotaract Club and the Circle K Club where he continued to organize initiatives to help others. In 2011 Wong was awarded the prestigious “Youth Leader of the Year” Award during the C-FAX 1070/Telus Community Awards. “I (am) impressed with a multiplicity of initiatives that Steven has ventured at such a young age and completed them so successfully, while at the same time, doing his scholastic work and passing exams with top marks,” said Rotarian Perry Bamji. “Steven’s vision, enthusiasm and the tenacity to do something tangible for youth in general, and special needs children in particular, is what
caught my eye.” Wong’s contributions to community include working with the Eldercare Foundation, the Circle K Club, as a candy striper at Royal Jubilee Hospital, visiting residents at Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion, organizing fundraisers for the B.C. Cancer Foundation and B.C. Children’s Hospital and volunteering as a camp leader at summer programs serving special needs children through the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health. Wong founded the UVic Nutrition Club to educate students on the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles. He did all this while achieving top marks through high school and earning his Honours in Biochemistry at UVic. As a UVic student he worked in the departments of biochemistry and microbiology; the department of chemistry and the department of biology conducting research. “Volunteering and community services are ways to impact those around me. These experiences have taught me much,” Wong said. “To know my hard work went towards valuable humanitarian causes or earning that delightful appreciation from others is empowering. I helped many
people throughout the years; this all led me to understand I want to study medicine. With great hopes of becoming a doctor, I have ambitions to continue impacting my community for the rest of my life.” The award of a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) is the Rotary Club’s way of expressing appreciation for a substantial contribution that an individual makes towards social, humanitarian and other voluntary causes. The award is the highest recognition conferred on an individual who exemplifies Rotary’s principal motto Service Above Self. “In Rotary, we are placing a great emphasis on youth – be they local or overseas. We sincerely believe that amongst the youth of today there will be some leaders and we are simply paving the way to achieve their dreams and their goals. Steven is a leader par excellence,” Bamji said. The Rotary Foundation authorizes Rotary clubs throughout the world to make one PHF award for every U.S. $1,000 club members contribute to the Rotary Foundation. Last year, Oak Bay members donated more than $20,000 to the Rotary Foundation. editor@oakbaynews.com

Horgan expected to earn top NDP job The B.C. NDP caucus lined up behind leadership contender John Horgan Tuesday, including his only rival for the job, Mike Farnworth. “Yes, today marks the end of my campaign for B.C. NDP leader,” Farnworth said at a news conference in Victoria Tuesday. “But more importantly, it begins our campaign to elect a B.C. NDP government in 2017, with John Horgan as premier.” Horgan thanked Farnworth for “putting aside his leadership campaign to create a unity candidate, a unity committee, to go forward and beat the Liberals in 2017.” Horgan said he will continue to campaign for the leadership until May 1, the deadline for nominations to lead the party. If that deadline passes with no new candidates, Horgan expects to be acclaimed. Farnworth’s campaign has suffered two setbacks in recent days, the latest being Horgan’s increased lead in endorsements. Horgan’s latest supporters are party members around Farnworth’s Port Coquitlam home turf, including Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Selina Robinson, NDP MP Fin Donnelly and former area MLAs Dawn Black and Joe Trasolini.
John Horgan Farnworth’s only public endorsers from the B.C. NDP caucus were Saanich South MLA Lana Popham and Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, while Horgan had 15 MLAs publicly supporting him. Popham told the News this week that she has confidence in Horgan as a leader. “He is a smart guy who can connect with people from all walks of life. And he is a fighter, very capable of beating Premier Christy Clark in the next election,” she said. “I’m really proud of Mike Farnworth for putting his personal ambition aside so our party can focus on holding the B.C. .Liberals to account.”
ON SITE!
Farnworth bore the brunt of former premier Mike Harcourt’s decision last week to quit the NDP. Harcourt endorsed Farnworth in the 2011 NDP leadership where Farnworth finished second to Adrian Dix. Another key endorsement for Horgan came from the B.C. executive of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 85,000 municipal workers in the province. The board led by CUPE B.C. president Mark Hancock, formerly president of the Port Coquitlam local, was among those calling for Horgan to run. After Dix announced he would step down this fall, Horgan initially said he would not seek the leadership, making way for younger contenders. But those contenders, including new MLAs elected in 2013, ruled themselves out one after another. The party has a deadline of May 1 for candidates to be nominated for the leadership, which includes payment of $25,000 to go towards staging of leadership debates around the province. Candidates have until June 26 to sign up new party members, with a province-wide vote scheduled to be completed Sept. 28. editor@oakbaynews.com

Light rail will work for region Surprise, surprise, rail transit really works in any city. It doesn’t matter the size, it is successful. You must however, connect as many high traffic generators, such as universities, hospitals, sport facilities, major business centres and malls where possible. In every city I visited in Europe, the rail lines were busy throughout the day. Two new systems opened recently in Dijon and La Man in France. Both these cities have large universities and they are very successful in attracting high ridership. There is no evidence to support that cities must have a certain population level for a rail line or a historic streetcar line. What really matters is rail is successful in lowering traffic congestion, reducing pollution and attracting more riders to the transit system. I spoke with the CEO of Salzburg transit system and he confirmed there is no city that is too big or small for electric transit, rail or trolleybuses. Salzburg has seen an increase in ridership when a change was made from a diesel bus line to a trolley bus line, up to 15 per cent. Our downtown Victoria deserves better. We need to decrease the congestion in our city, reduce fumes, improve the environment and encourage a pedestrian friendly situation. It would be only a positive change. Let’s start with the proposed downtown streetcar from the cruise ship terminal, through to the city, via Government or Douglas streets. There are many good examples of new systems in Europe and North America and after all, tourism is one of our biggest assets. In Europe they are building new systems from 40 to 55 million Canadian dollars, everything included. Why can’t we build for the same amount? We must move into the 20th century with a modern, well-equipped transit system. Almost all cities we visited have a pedestrian-only shopping area that means no cars. What a good idea. We all know people do the shopping, not cars. Bill Macdonald Oak Bay

Is normalizing pubbing with the kids possible? Kyle Wells News staff
A quaint vision of levelheaded European families heading to the pub for dinner with their perhaps mature-beyond-their-years kids in tow is common in North America. The story continues that those children grow up accustomed to being around alcohol and are less likely to overindulge when old enough to procure it on their own. Whether or not this vision is a reality is becoming relevant, as the province considers implementing a change to liquor laws later this year that would allow minors in pubs if accompanied by adults. The general consensus is it’s an oversimplified fantasy. Kara Thompson, a post-doctoral fellow with the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of B.C., specializes in adolescent substance use, particularly alcohol. The idea that you can reduce the allure of alcohol to youth by normalizing drinking and making it less taboo doesn’t really work, she said, despite stories people tell of children drinking wine with dinner in France. “That’s a very, very common misperception,” Thompson said. “Yes, alcohol is used differently in those cultures and so it’s more normalized, (but) they experience … as much alcohol-related prob-

lems as we experience.” Jessica Ball, a professor with UVic’s school of youth and child care, said it should be remembered the majority of adults do not engage in problem drinking, and therefore the majority of youth will not develop drinking problems, regardless of whether or not they go to pubs as a child. A more important factor perhaps is the parents, who are still role models and do play a part in how their children grow up to view alcohol consumption. “If adults can, in a public environment, role model non-problematic drinking, that might be seen as a good thing,” Ball said.
Also, with regulations likely limiting what time of the day minors can be in the pub, and with most restaurants already serving alcohol, this policy change on its own will likely make little difference, Thompson said. The overall trend in increasing youth exposure to drinking and alcohol, including selling alcohol in grocery stores, however, is causing concern. Studies have shown that in cultures where adults drink more and where children are around alcohol more, the number of youth getting drunk and drinking heavily is higher. In general, youth drinking can cause health risks, Thompson
said. Alcohol poisoning is most problematic among youth and youth drinking is linked to a reduced likelihood of going on to post-secondary education and graduating high school. Mental health problems can also arise from youth drinking. This makes decisions on how to approach the topic of alcohol with your children difficult for families, she said. There are hard choices to make about what sort of example to set and whether or not to expose your children to alcohol. “Parents struggle with making a decision about whether or not they should teach their kids how to drink responsibly or … whether to not encourage that behaviour.” While research findings are mixed, Thompson said they lean towards recommending parents not encourage their children to drink, either by buying them alcohol or even serving them a little wine with dinner. “They’re sending a message to adolescents that they, in some capacity, have approved their alcohol consumption. Those adolescents tend to be more likely to progress in their drinking a little faster and to drink in contexts outside of drinking with their parents more. The idea that it teaches kids how to drink responsibly really hasn’t been proven.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

Questions come fast and furious in the car
Focus split: daughter/career Q&A Julie Evans, managing funeral director at Sands Funeral Chapel - Colwood, is a single mom who, at 47, loves the energy her 3-1/2 year old daughter, Madeline, injects into their relationship.
Q
How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?
A
I don’t (laughing). Since Madeline was born, I had one girls night out last year and I have probably been out a handful of times in the past 3-1/2 years. My joy truly is my work, which is a calling, it’s a passion. But my time with Madeline is very special, too.
Q
What are you reading right now? What do you read with your daughter?
A
The last one I read for myself, on an airplane, was Proof of Heaven by Dr. Eben Alexander. The last book I actually read (with my daughter) was Wanda the Witch. At 3-1/2, she’s pretty incredible, she’s moved on to chapter books. Every two weeks we go to the library and pick out about 10 books.
Q
What is your favourite family activity to share together?
A
Going to the beach in East Sooke Park and poking at squishy things in the tidal pools. It’s nice coming from Ontario where you can’t go in lake because of the bacteria count. We just pack up and spend the whole day there.
Q
The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A
Getting cuddles from my daughter, the cuddle in the morning and that cuddle at night, and when she randomly says, ‘I love you mommy.’
Recently I met the father of eight and 10 year olds, who seemed stunned to discover that his life’s work now involved taxiing children around. I smiled empathetically, patted his arm and said, “It will get worse.” But as I look back over 18 years of driving Susan my kids here, there and everywhere, I know for a fact: it was a blessing. We had the best times in the car, sang the most songs, had deep conversations. I can also see that as the years went by, the nature of driving kids around changed, from those days when they could suddenly read every road sign we’d pass, to years later, when I’d pick up a carload of post-party teens at 2 a.m., no questions asked. But amid those early car-bound years, sits that unforgettable stage: “the question period,’ when queries weren’t asked, they were sprayed at you like a hose. My elder daughter Danica was six and Sierra, four, when I counted the number of questions I faced in a one hour in the car. Danica fired up the minute tire touched pavement, asking a total of 54 questions. Sierra, who had to wait for Danica to catch her breath, squeezed in eight, totalling one question per minute. No wonder my brain throbbed. Later, in studying their questions,

CAPITAL CITY Do your research on daycares, preschools TUXEDO RENTALS Greater Victoria Family
Don Descoteau News staff
Early childhood educator Andrea Farkas works with a child at Victoria Child Care Resource and Referral’s teaching playroom.
In the past decade, many parents in Greater Victoria have faced the daycare dilemma. It’s not uncommon for parents to register with a facility soon after becoming pregnant, simply to be put on a waiting list in hopes of securing a future space for their child. And while the addition of more in-home and other unlicensed daycares has made spaces a little easier to come by in recent years, parents who demand a certain level of education in those caring for and teaching their young children continue to find it a challenge. An early childhood educator (ECE) working in the field for 17 years, Moss Rock Preschool teacher Danielle Davis is familiar with how difficult it can be to find a daycare or preschool spot for a toddler or pre-Kindergarten student. Just five weeks after becoming pregnant with her daughter in 2010, she started the search and was put on three wait lists. “It’s becoming the face of child care in our community. Parents are faced with really tough choices,” she says. With not all care facilities and arrangements created equally,
Don Descoteau/ News staff
parents have to ask themselves, ‘what level of care and early learning am I willing to accept for my child?’ While Davis insists that environments where children work with trained educators can be more beneficial to the child’s development, parents in a must-work position often need to rely on less-educated caregivers, at least for a while. “I have a friend who gave up a spot in a good family daycare because he wanted to put his son into a group situation with ECE’s, and where there would be more exposure to kids his own age. But it’s not that easy to find spaces.” Belinda Macey, co-ordinator

of Child Care Resource and Referral on Douglas Street downtown, is an advocate for early childhood education programs. Aware that not every caregiver has their ECE diploma or plans to pursue it, she says it’s important the bar be raised for everyone working in the field. Twice a year, the organization offers a Family Child Care training course for unlicensed operators planning to work out of their homes, a category that makes up 43 per cent of all care and preschool situations in B.C., Macey says. “We try to raise the standard of care in all settings,” she says of the educational offering.
For single parents struggling to make ends meet while bringing up a young child, the care conundrum can be particularly troubling, says Christine Kenwood, acting executive director of the 1UP Single Parent Resource Centre. “Most of our clients have incomes well below the poverty line, so a lot of their issues with daycare are around not being able to afford it,” she says. “You get into this vicious circle where you can’t (accept work) if you can’t afford daycare, but if you can’t go to work, you can’t afford daycare.” One of the long-term goals of 1UP is to offer daycare onsite for people attending classes at the centre. It offers a babysitting subsidy for new immigrants, people new to town or single parents in isolation. Once parents have their children enrolled in a program, many remain involved, says Andrea Farkas, Davis’ fellow teacher at Moss Rock. “Our parents are really keen,” she says. “Parents are busy, but they’re still interested in the type of learning that’s going on.” Find information and tips for parents looking for daycare and preschool openings in the region at childcarevictoria.org ddescoteau@vicnews.com

variable valve timing, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Euro for the Americas Ford has done an excellent job of using its worldwide expertise to bring some very practical, yet fun to drive, small cars to North America. Using Europeans to build the Ford Focus and Fiesta for a worldwide market enabled the manufacturer to bring these superb handling cars virtually unchanged to our shores. On top of that, Ford is also selling their sportiest ST versions of both these cars. The Focus ST was introduced last year and this year we get the Fiesta ST “hot hatch.” I’ve been a huge fan of the Fiesta. In fact, I prefer it to the bigger Focus. It is a perfect city runabout with go-kart-like handling and a stylish little package. Looks For 2014, all Fiesta models get a minor facelift with a new front grille and headlights. The ST is easy to spot because of the black honeycomb grille with an ST badge, bigger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler hanging over the rear window, a bigger rear air diffuser with twin exhaust tips and blacked out trim around the windows. The ST looks like it means business. There are two exterior options that might be worth the money. Upgraded paint colours like ‘Molten Orange’ or ‘Green Envy Metallic’ cost $400 and the smoked grey wheels with red brake calipers cost $500 more. The base ST at $24,999 comes very well equipped and is ready to cause some trouble. Inside The first thing that pops right out on the ST interior are the two heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats. These are not meant for big people; you just won’t fit. They are snug and supportive but lack some simple, yet important adjustments. The front of the seat sits much higher than the back so your backside is very low with your knees pointing up. This produces a sporty feel initially but the lack of adjustment prevents the driver from being able to stretch their legs. The dash is updated to include a MyFord Touch screen for radio, phone, navigation and climate functions. The screen is rather small and far from the driver, which makes accessing the small, virtual buttons on the screen a challenge. The ST comes standard with very powerful front seat heaters, automatic climate control, a fat leather steering wheel

This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles.

with redundant radio controls and a leather covered manual shifter. The back seat has always been tight in the Fiesta; this is perfect for a single person or couple. Drive In an era of cars that almost drive themselves, the Fiesta ST is a throwback to a time when the driver felt connected to the machine. The suspension is much
firmer than the regular Fiesta, almost harsh over bumpy roads but the feedback to the driver through the tight steering ratio, firm chassis and the grippy Recaro seats is superb. The turbocharged, direct injection 1,6L Ecoboost engine pumps out 197hp. It’s only sold with a super-slick manual transmission that shifts with no effort at all and the clutch is precise. In such a small car, this engine lets the driver do pretty much anything at will. Want to pass on the highway? No problem. Want to scoot away from a traffic light? No effort at all. This really is a car that
does everything very well, including getting good fuel economy when the throttle is used lightly: using only 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. Verdict At $24,999, the price might seem a bit steep for a subcompact car but this little machine comes almost fully loaded for that price. The options available are not “must have” items so the price can be kept in check. This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles. The ST just delivers much bigger smiles. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I
gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

Four-time World Rally Champion, Tommi Mäkinen, is behind the wheel of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in the middle of nowhere, California. I’m riding shotgun along with two others in the back. The ease and effortlessness in which he wrangles the 305 turbocharged horses of the Subaru via the six-speed manual gearbox is really no surprise. After all, he’s not a champion because he looks good doing it. So, if the pro can make it look and feel as perfect as
a summer’s day, I should be able to as well, right? I slip into the captain’s chair of the STI – without Tommi in the car, thank goodness – and take to the 3.1-mile track. Prior to the hot laps, I had driven the outgoing 2014 Subaru STI on the same course. I’d be back-to-back testing these all-wheel drive machines to see how the engineering prowess has, yet again, continued to make a vehicle with a cultlike following even better. Rewind a few hours to the start-of-the-day’s press conference. Masuo Takatsu, WRX STI
Tommy Mäkinen and Alexandra Straub say thumbs up to the 2015 WRX. Project General Manager, mentioned the modus operandi of the fourth gen-
eration STI was to create a vehicle that behaves as the drivers expects it to.

it has been re-imagined on both the inside and out. But anyone who knows the vehicle is aware that it is in a class of its own, with few competitors that can come close to the emotional appeal that this sedan brings to the market. And anyone not familiar with it should be aware that, despite its 2.5L turbocharged engine, which produces the aforementioned 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, it is as gracious and powerful as a samurai soldier and his sword. Now, for those who are looking for similar excitement but not as many ponies, fear not, Subaru has their WRX to captivate you. Also completely redesigned on the inside and out, you have the magic of the Japanese brand’s 2.0L, turbocharged engine that produces 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and also the choice of a manual or a Sport Lineartronic transmission (a CVT with eight virtual gears; similar to that found on the new Forester but tailored specifically to the WRX.) It too has the dynamism and pedigree to impress on the road and track. Performance, good times, outstanding engineering and hot colours equate to the new 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI. mance, that wasn’t my goal. The goal was to experience first-hand how docile yet potent Subaru’s famed sedan took to the high speeds and corners of the club track. I had no desire to hand the keys over to my colleagues as they eagerly anticipated their time in the Rally Blue beauty. It would be sacrilege if I didn’t insert some technical jargon into the reasoning why the STI scored big points on the road test. Without getting too deep into the engineering, here are the top three take-home points of this incredible vehicle. One: the increased use of high-strength steel makes for a stiffer and stronger body, and decreases its tendency to twist and bend in corners. The result? A more predictable handling sedan that isn’t easily irked and stays firmly planted to the ground. Furthermore, the 2015 STI achieves 16 per cent less body roll than before. Two: You have the practicality of added dimensions. There is 25 mm added to wheelbase, there is 900 mm more legroom in back and you get 20L more cargo space (from 320L to 340L.) Three: The Base WRX and STI don’t have a rear spoiler. The Sport and Sport-tech WRX has a trunk lip spoiler and the corresponding STI trims have the “table for six” or very large spoiler. Perhaps it’s also sacrilege to not put the emphasis of this review on the design and engineering of this new generation of STI. After all,

detect a vehicle entering a blind spot. I can’t believe I’ve got this far talking about a truck without mentioning power. One of the engine choices is a new 2.7L EcoBoost engine that has undergone more than 16 million kilometres of testing. Other motors are the new 3.5L V6 EcoBoost that combines the efficiency of twin independent variable camshaft timing, and flex fuel capabilities, a 3.5L EcoBoost engine, and a 5.0L V8. The trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters. They stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stopand-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. Preventative mainentance extends lifespan As the economy begins to rebound, a good percentage of motorists have resolved to keep their vehicles on the road longer in an effort to stretch their automobile dollars. That’s a sound resolution, and one that is not necessarily difficult to accomplish. Contrary to popular belief, cars are built to last, and it’s often a driver’s poor habits that reduce a car’s life expectancy. Drivers can lengthen a vehicle’s lifespan by employing preventive maintenance that should keep a car running strong for years to come. Air filter When examining the vehicle’s air filter (check the vehicle manual for location), look for dirt or dust buildup. If the filter is filthy, simply replace it. Auto parts stores sell air filters, and most drivers shouldn’t have trouble replacing a filter by themselves. A dirty air filter can negatively effect fuel economy and make it seem as though a vehicle is constantly going uphill in a stiff wind. When a dirty air filter is replaced, drivers will notice an instant impact in
how the car drives and are likely to save a few dollars at the filling station as well. Belts and hoses Issues with belts or hoses are often recognizable to the naked eye, regardless of a driver’s automotive skill. A hose in poor condition can appear bulging or brittle, and should not feel too soft or too hard. If a hose exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it. A belt that’s worn or frayed should also be replaced. Brake fluid One of the more expensive repair jobs on a vehicle is to replace the brakes. Brakes will need to be replaced over the course of a vehicle’s lifespan, but drivers should routinely check the vehicle’s brake fluid. Without sufficient brake fluid, the brakes’ lifespan decreases dramatically. Checking the brake fluid is easy; look in the owner’s manual to find the brake fluid reservoir and remove the lid). The reservoir will likely have instructions on the inside advising how much brake fluid should be added. If the fluid is below the line of demarcation,
add fluid up to that line. But be careful not to overfill. Check the brake fluid levels on a monthly basis. Motor oil Oil change guidelines have changed dramatically thanks to better cars and more reliable motor oils. But it still helps to check motor oil levels after every fill up. If motor oil levels are low, add more oil. If oil is significantly low after each fill up, consult a mechanic just to be safe. Exhaust Once a year, be it at a routine tune up or should
repair work be necessary, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s emissions. Failing an emissions test might be against the law, and a failed test could be indicative of a larger problem. In addition, inspect the muffler and exhaust pipe for holes, particularly after winter, when debris from snow trucks may do significant damage. Replace any damaged or rusted parts. Power steering Power steering fluid should also be inspected on a monthly basis. When checking power steering
fluid, also inspect the pump for any leaks. Tires Keeping tires properly inflated pays numerous dividends. Properly inflated tires make it easier for the
engine to operate, lowering fuel costs while also decreasing wear and tear on the engine. The owner’s manual should list a recommended tire pressure, and the local filling station likely

has an air pump. Maintaining tires also involves checking for wear and tear. Uneven wear could indicate the tires are misaligned. Discuss this with your mechanic. Transmission fluid When checking transmission fluid, do so while the car is running and after the engine has warmed up. Always be certain to put the parking brake on when checking transmission fluid. If the vehicle needs transmission fluid, add the recommended fluid but be careful not to overfill. Prolonging a vehicle’s lifespan is not as difficult as it sounds. Oftentimes, all it takes is routine, maintenance to keep a car on the road for years and years.

Time to get the brakes done? Brake pads tell the story pad on the front wheel, which is visible on most cars. But rotors don’t have the benefits of a warning device, and in the past, they had to be physically examined and measured in order to determine the amount of wear. Fortunately, a new advanced brake rotor from Continental Corporation has been developed to solve this problem.
what’s needed, but only after the car has been inspected. So how do you know when to bring your car in for service? Some disc brake pads have wear sensors that trigger a “service” light on your dash, or shims that start to make noise when the pads are getting down to the minimum. If you know what you are looking for, you can also check for wear by looking at the outside brake
(MS) — Your car’s brakes are one of your most important safety features. So it makes sense to be sure that they are maintained properly. Since brakes wear out as part of normal operation, it’s obvious that the worn parts should be identified and replaced as soon as possible. Built-in wear indicator signals rotor replacement The ATE PremiumOne(R) Rotor features a patented RotorLife(R) wear indicator that provides a quick visual reference of rotor thickness and tells you if replacement is needed. The wear indicator’s elliptical grooves are machined into both sides of the rotor face at the minimum discard thicknesses recommended by the original equipment vehicle manufacturer. When these grooves wear out, its time to bring the car in and have the rotor replaced. It’s that simple. You can easily see the rotor wear for yourself without having to lift the car or remove
the wheels. The wear indicators do not hurt the rotor’s performance in any way. In fact, they actually make it work better, which enhances the performance of your brake system. These wear grooves also serve to dissipate heat and gases, which helps to reduce brake fade and extends the life of your pads. For more information on how to get ATE PremiumOne Rotors for your vehicle ask your service technician, or contact Continental Corporation at salessupport-us@continental-corporation.com, or visit ate-na.com.

Mow Like a Pro
(MS) — With the return of warm weather comes the return of time spent outdoors. After a winter spent huddled up inside avoiding the cold, the arrival of spring is often welcomed with open arms. The welcome mat for spring often includes a weekend getaway with the family to soak up some spring rays. For those about to embark on a springtime road trip, consider the following money saving tips to ensure your trip is as inexpensive as it is enjoyable. • Bring something for the kids to do in the car. While parents might enjoy hitting the open road and pushing the pedal to the metal, kids often get bored the longer a trip is, and that can lead to frequent and costly pitstops to help quell that boredom. Parents can prepare for that inevitable boredom and avoid such stopovers by bringing some entertainment along for the kids. Portable DVD players are relatively inexpensive and can keep kids occupied on long trips. For those renting a vehicle for their trip, inquire at the rental agency as to the availability of vehicles with built-in DVD players. Parents can also employ more traditional road trip fare by playing some favourite games from yesteryear. These games include the License Plate Game, I Spy or 20 Questions to make a trip more fun for adults and children alike. • Visit family or friends en route to your destination. Those heading out on an extended weekend getaway can save money on hotels or meals by calling family
and friends and either staying overnight or simply visiting for a meal. Grandma and Grandpa would no doubt appreciate a visit and might even offer to let you stay the night and save the expense of a costly hotel. • Don't get lost. While no one plans on getting lost, it does happen, even in the current day and age when GPS systems and cellphones enable drivers to easily access the Internet and get directions. And getting lost can prove costly if you end up driving around looking for the right way to go. If you don't have a GPS system, print out directions and be sure to bring them along for the trip. Also, when printing out directions ahead of time, look for alternate routes that might save time and, as a result, money. Visit different web sites to see if one offers substantially shorter routes than another. The disparity between recommended driving routes might be greater than you think. • Pre-pack lunches and snacks. Instead of stopping along the way for lunch, pre-pack lunches. This can help save money and also allows parents to plan healthier meals, as many roadside restaurants are fast food joints that kids might love but parents certainly don't. When packing lunches, let the kids pack a few items for themselves. This will make them enjoy the meals more and help them forget about the meals they're not getting from their favorite fast food restaurants.

Change cabin air filter before allergens strike (MS) – The worst is over, we’re thinking. With winter officially behind us, we need only look to warmer days ahead. Not so for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. A short winter season followed by an early spring — as we have experienced lately — may only hasten the onset of allergens and pollen in the air, causing an itchy and runny nose, teary eyes, sneezing and congestion in those who are prone to allergies. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, an organization of allergists, immunologists and related professionals, “Avoiding your allergy triggers is the best way to reduce symptoms.” (aaaai.org.) Limiting outdoor activities on days with high pollen counts, keeping windows closed (at home or in the car) to keep pollen out, and taking a shower after coming indoors, are some of the steps the academy recommends. However, “keeping your car’s windows closed while driving may not be
sufficient if your car’s cabin air filter is clogged,” said Chuck Kerrigan, Director of Marketing for Purolator. The company supplies BreatheEasy cabin air filters to the aftermarket in North America. (www.BreatheEasyCabinFilters.com) Located under the hood or behind the glove box of most late model vehicles, a fresh cabin air filter helps clean the air that enters the driver and passenger compartment through the vents, keeping it free of dust and other pollutants that can aggravate asthma and allergy symptoms. “When the cabin air filter remains unchanged for long periods of time, the dust and dirt that accumulate are blown back into the interior of the car when the A/C or heating is turned on,” Kerrigan explained. AAAAI lists three pollen seasons depending on where you live. Trees pollinate in the spring, grass releases its pollen in the summer, and weeds cause allergic symptoms in the fall. And, if in a given year, winter is short and spring comes early, allergens will
strike more often than not. Therefore, Purolator recommends changing the cabin air filter every 12,000 miles or per the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested intervals in the owner’s manual. Two kinds of cabin filters are available — the particulate cabin filter and the activated charcoal cabin filter. The activated charcoal cabin filter adsorbs most toxic and foul-smelling gases, such as ozone, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbons, keeping odors out of the car’s cabin. Purolator offers both for many vehicles. Refer to the owner’s manual or the application guide at BreatheEasyCabinFilters.com to see if your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter. Purolator’s BreatheEasy cabin air filters contain media that is engineered to capture and hold even the finest particles of contaminants such as dust, soot, pollen, fungus and bacteria. These filters are electrostatically charged to ensure that particles stay embedded in the filter and cannot enter the vehicle. Purolator BreatheEasy
cabin air filters come with illustrated vehicle-specific instructions that make installation simple for doit-yourselfers or professional technicians. So, why not take yet another step toward keeping allergens at bay?

My name is Sherry Ba ird, my business partn er is Jon Bell, we are proud to own Advan ce Collision on Pembrok e Street; a local family owned col lision repair facility our dads started in 1963. Fifty-one years late r, we continue to be first choice for the region, number 1 in customer service, offeri ng a lifetime guarantee – no wonder they call us: ‘The Body Shop for Fussy Folks.’ We are the sho p right across from the Arena. I felt compelled to write this short article for Dri veway, as I feel there is an important me ssage to deliver to all veh icle owners. An acquaintance inform ed me the other day tha t she had her car repaired at a shop her private insurance com pany referred. She didn’t think to ask if she could have it rep aired elsewhere as she still was very flust ered from her accident experience and just wanted to get the car repaired. As it turned out she received poor service and mentioned that the people she was dealing with lacked com passion. It was an ove rall unpleasant experience. As a shop owner, listening to her experience troubled me, I felt passi onate about speaking out about this. Did you know that alth ough your private insura nce company may direct you to a spe cific shop, that you stil l may take your vehicle to the shop of your choice. Let Advan ce Collision be your choice. Advance Collision is one of severa l locally owned non-franchise collision repair facilities that are here today only because of their top no tch customer service. Hi, my name is Azhar Omarjee. I’m pleased to be the new pharmacist and owner of your local Target Pharmacy.
The Victoria SPCA is hoping a badly injured dog will recover the full use of her back legs. Bryn, a pit bull cross, was surrendered to the BCSPCA last week. She had several injuries that appear to be from blunt force trauma, said Annie Prittie Bell, the SPCA Victoria branch manger. The dog’s owner is under investigation for animal cruelty. “She has injuries to her head, torso, legs and teeth. Her skin has split open on the top of her head and she has bruising around the right side of that injury, as well as a swelling and broken front leg, lacerations under her left arm pit and abrasions on her front leg,” Bell said. She added Bryn also suffered bruising to the right side of her torso, a broken canine tooth that needs extraction and is experiencing some neurological damage to her back legs, making it hard for her to stand or move around. Described as a “gentle and sweet girl,” Bryn has been medicated and sutured. Her medical

Cyclists get a leg up for Bike to Work Week
Insurance advice you can count on. Island Savings employees are passionate
Nate Clark News intern
For those not in the loop, the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week is one of the city’s most popular events. It attracts more than 7,000 commuter cyclists each year and over its two-decade long history, has convinced more than 12, 000 people to switch from petrol to pedals. “Biking to work is not only great for physical fitness, but improves mental health as well,” says Frank Hudson, executive director of the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society. “It improves quality of life and reduces the long-term health-care costs for everyone.” The Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and freewheeling cyclists might encounter some pleasant surprises on their morning commute. Twenty “celebration stations” will be strategically placed in every corner of the city, where cycling experts will be checking bikes, offering tune-ups and giving away prizes. “We’re giving away about $40,000 worth of prizes,” says Hudson, who biked from Langford to James Bay every morning for over a decade before his retirement. “The same as
about their members and communities.

Thousands are expected to take in Bike to Work Week activities. we did last year.” Victoria is a national cycling Mecca, boasting the largest number of commuting cyclists in Canada by far. Nearly six per cent of all commuters choose bikes over cars in the city, with Ottawa running a distant second at 2.2 per cent. The statistic is a badge of honour that Victoria’s cyclists wear with pride. “It’s a great honour and a great cause,” says Hudson. On May 31 the event closes with the “Celebration Mega-Station” in Centennial Square. The midday party will feature bikes, free food and live music from Victoria’s The Midnights, a popular12-piece R&B group. The 20th annual Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week launched with a celebration on April 9, and officially runs from May 26 to June 1. editor@oakbaynews.com

Q: HOW CAN I HELP MAKE SURE I GET TOP PRICE FOR MY HOME? Make sure you have room to negotiate – When determining your asking price, be sure you have left yourself enough room to bargain. Select your highest and lowest price and then consult your motivation for sale: do you want to price high to earn the most, or price low for a quick sale? Enlist the opinion of others – Don’t rely solely on your own judgement when preparing your home for sale. Ask others what they honestly think about your property’s strengths and weaknesses. A good realtor will give an honest opinion about steps to be taken to make your home as saleable as possible. Don’t move out before you’ve sold – It’s well known that a vacant home is more difficult to sell and may appear to potential buyers like you have a strong motivation to sell. Do you have a homebuying or selling story you’d like to share with us? Email ddescoteau@ vicnews.com To advertise in Homefinder, contact Oliver Sommer at: osommer@black press.ca

Video can work as a home marketing tool One local Realtor is seeing it work effectively for clients Don Descoteau News staff
The popularity of home and garden TV shows has been an inspiration for Stephen Foster. Married to an interior designer and keenly interested in home improvement projects, the Greater Victoria Realtor was looking for a edge as he built his fledgling real estate career. With film and television experience under his belt, Foster’s answer has been to meld his various skills together and create a service that gives people a better sense of what a home and its surrounding neighbourhood are all about – before the potential buyer steps foot inside. “Every single house I (have a listing for) gets a video,” he says. Where some agents limit video marketing coverage to their big-ticket, exclusive properties, he takes every property on its own merits and looks for the highlights. “I feel there is value in everybody’s assets,” he says, adding those appealing characteristics can be found all around a home. Using video as a tool to sell homes is not new, but Foster has taken the strategy to a new level, posting the videos on his personal website and creating a YouTube channel that now has more than 500 subscribers. With many potential buyers, even those just curious about what’s on the market or for sale in their neighbourhood, looking online first for details about homes, Foster says, video is the next step to linking busy potential buyers to properties. “I just thought, why not give

people a different impression of a home,” Foster says, adding the fact he is comfortable in front of a camera helps him make the presentations fun and entertaining. “A sale is still about reaching out to people, and that was a way of connecting on a wider scale.” The explosion of YouTube and its links to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and others has allowed Foster’s service to blossom in the last couple of years. Anyone without a background in film and TV would no doubt find the process of creating individual videos for each listing a time-consuming, labour-intensive activity. But Foster says the process has been worthwhile and provides him with some quality leads. While he watches his advertising budget closely, he says it’s still important to use a multi-pronged approach, using print and other mediums to reach a broad audience.

“Initially I had to focus where I could get as many people as possible,” he says. “With my background, taking people through a home by video was of paramount importance. The impact has been great, and it’s growing as people see how I do my work.” He’s had buyers contact him from Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatchewan who have seen his videos. Realtor Fergus Kyne, a former schoolteacher who’s been selling real estate in Greater Victoria since 1998, also uses video, but in a slightly different, more subjective way. He offers listing reviews in short video segments – often featuring guests who provide ancillary services to the real estate industry – in which he gives his opinion on various aspects of properties currently listed for sale. “I was looking for a different way to attract buyers, and the idea came up to help buyers review listings,
in terms of the value and the possibility of getting a property sold,” he says. The idea, he says, was to be able to say, “XYZ property at 1234 Elm St. is priced very well and I don’t think it will last long,” where another home might be perceived as being somewhat overpriced for the market. While he finds his forté is still working with people face to face, the video service has offered another way of getting his image out there as someone with expertise in the housing market. With analysis and what-if style TV programs like Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Property Virgins continuing to prove popular, the use of video by Greater Victoria Realtors is likely only going to increase. Given the time involved in producing, some agents will still have to be convinced that it’s worth their while.
