From scrap heap to retail success Capital Iron is the latest large downtown retailer to move out west Don Descoteau News staff
There’s no rest for a busy retailer, especially when you’ve got a new store to open. Mike Black, whose family owns and operates Capital Iron, just got back from a buying trip to Vietnam. He made sure, however, that his schedule allowed him to return in time to see their third store open, at 975 Langford Pkwy. in the former Sandy’s Furniture building. “We’ve come out to the West Shore to come out to the people,” he says. “We know that’s where the growth is and where the families are, but we also want to be part of the community.” Since West Shore residents heard the iconic 80-year-old retail company – which began life as a scrap metal dealer – would be opening on the burgeoning Parkway, they’ve shown interest in a couple of ways. A job fair held in early March attracted about 150 people, mainly locals, Black says. In the end, the new store will have 24 staff, all but one of whom live on the West Shore. The lone exception is store manager Brad Williams, who transferred out
from the downtown Victoria store along with a number of other staff. New cashier Kayla Naphan likes the fact she can walk to work. “It takes me 20 minutes,” she says. As for her fellow West Shore-based staffers, she says, “They’re all happy to not have to go downtown.” Sales associate Paul Morrison, who previously worked at Sandy’s, has been struck by the excitement over the impending opening. “I think there’s a lot of pent-up enthusiasm on the West Shore,” he says. “We’ve literally had people pulling on the door for three months.” Tapping into the market for outdoor items like patio furniture, hot tubs and barbecues – not to mention the store’s regular fare of housewares, clothing and recreational equipment – is part of the plan, Black says. But he’s just as interested in becoming a community focal point, thus the hiring of local staff who will know many customers personally. West Shore Chamber of Commerce spokesperson Craig Sorochan says Capital Iron’s expansion into Langford is the latest sign large retailers see the value in locating to where the population base is shifting. The Langford Parkway corridor,
which will also see a new Quality Foods store opening soon, is creating a lot of employment, he adds. And with many young families and retirees moving into the area in the past five to 10 years, there is a stillexpanding market into which to tap. “The West Shore is becoming an area where people from around the region come to shop, even up Island,” Sorochan says. Capital Iron hosts its grand opening tomorrow (April 12, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with product demonstrations, contests, music and other festivities. The B.C. NDP caucus lined up behind leadership contender John Horgan on Tuesday, including his only rival for the job, Mike Farnworth. “Yes, today marks the end of my campaign for B.C. NDP leader,” Farnworth said at a news conference. “But more importantly, it begins our campaign to elect a B.C. NDP government in 2017, with John Horgan as premier.” Juan de Fuca MLA Horgan thanked Farnworth for “putting aside his leadership campaign to create a unity candidate, a unity committee, to go forward and beat the Liberals in 2017.” He added he will continue to campaign for the leadership until May 1, the deadline for nominations to lead the party. If that deadline passes with no new candidates, Horgan expects to be acclaimed. Farnworth’s campaign suffered two setbacks recently, the latest being Horgan’s increased lead in endorsements. His latest supporters included Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Selina Robinson, NDP MP Fin Donnelly and former area MLAs Dawn Black and Joe Trasolini. Farnworth’s only public endorsers from the B.C. NDP caucus were Saanich South MLA Lana Popham and Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, while Horgan had 15 MLAs publicly supporting him. Farnworth also bore the brunt of former premier Mike Harcourt’s decision last week to quit the NDP. Harcourt endorsed Farnworth

Another key endorsement for Horgan came from the B.C. executive of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 85,000 municipal workers in the province. The board, led by CUPE B.C. president Mark Hancock, formerly president of the Port Coquitlam local, was among those calling for Horgan to run. After Dix announced he would step down this fall, Horgan initially said he would not seek the leadership, making way for younger contenders. But those contenders, including new MLAs elected in 2013, ruled themselves out one after another. The party has a deadline of May 1 for candidates to be nominated for the leadership, which includes payment of $25,000 to go towards staging of leadership debates around the province. View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst was home in bed when he got the call about a house fire at 3 a.m. When he arrived on scene, the Paddock Place house was in flames and the three occupants were not all accounted for. Quickly firefighters began a search for an eight-year-old girl, Katrina Van Winkle, who was trapped somewhere inside. A short time later, assistant chief John Chow broke the front door open and spotted a body in the smoke-filled hallway. Hurst, nearby at the time, made the decision to go in and try to retrieve the girl. It took him three attempts – he wasn’t wearing breathing apparatus, to finally get her out. When he laid her down on the front lawn she wasn’t breathing, so he performed CPR to revive her. The chief’s actions March 14, 2013, which saved the life of the View Royal elementary student, were recognized Tuesday night when Hurst was given the B.C. Fire Fighter Medal of Bravery. The incident, from arrival on scene to getting Katrina out and

whisked away by ambulance, took about eight minutes, said Hurst, who was quick to credit his fellow firefighters for their efforts that night. “You had 23 people doing 23 different things and if any one of them does something differently than they did, the result might have been different,” he said. For the brief ceremony, View Royal’s council chambers were full, almost half with uniformed members of fire, police and other emergency services. Katrina was on hand with her grandma and great grandma, who were also in the fire, to see Hurst receive his medal from B.C. Attorney General and Justice Minister Suzanne Anton.

Although the fire happened a year ago, Hurst still remembers it like it was yesterday. “It makes an imprint and you never forget it,” he said. Tim Pley, Port Alberni fire chief and president of the Fire Chiefs’ Association of B.C., said first responders get involved in hopes they’ll have a chance to serve the community. That also comes with great responsibility, he added, which Hurst accepted fully on the night he saved a life. “As good as he feels now, he’ll feel even better about it 20 years from now,” Pley said. editor@goldstream newsgazette.com

Esquimalt council was met with a standing ovation Monday night when it not only rejected – but unanimously slammed the door on future proposals – for a sewage treatment plant on its shoreline. The decision has ramifications not only for the timeline and cost of the Capital Regional District’s $783-million project, but for the region’s autonomy: The provincial cabinet now has the authority to intervene and force rezoning at McLoughlin Point. “The reaction to Esquimalt saying, ‘We don’t want the plant at all,’ has changed the transaction. It’s shut down some options and really limited the ways we can move forward,” said Geoff Young, chair of the CRD’s core area liquid waste management committee. During negotiations, the CRD included up to $13 million in mitigating features like street upgrades and strict odour monitoring to make more palatable the rezoning of McLoughlin Point for a wastewater treatment plant. Now, council’s unanimous opposition to that rezoning package Monday night is simply the end result of elected officials doing their job, said Mayor Barb Desjardins. “When you get a standing ovation after you take your vote, you’ve obviously met

It’s shut down some options and really limited the ways we can move forward.” – Geoff Young the public’s needs,” Desjardins said. “It’s really my hope that both CRD and the province recognize the message and where it came from: the public, from all across the region.” Desjardins criticized CRD officials for failing to deliver requested information including details on First Nations consultation, some meeting minutes and an independent tsunami report for McLoughlin Point. “The same company that provided a tsunami report is one of the groups bidding on this facility. Does that seem appropriate? Certainly not from the public’s perspective. That was a big letdown,” she said. Desjardins stressed a “re-evaluation” of the entire project would be prudent after witnessing public reaction over the past two months. At a committee meeting Wednesday, CRD directors voted to ask the provincial cabinet to intervene: either force through McLoughlin
Point or provide other options. Public input continues to be a mixed bag, Young said. Some residents believe no treatment is necessary while others argue tertiary treatment is the only responsible solution. “Some are against the project because they think it’s too much treatment, and others think it’s not enough,” Young said. “The committee has done a lot of research, we’ve looked at a lot of sites and this seems to be best available.” CRD directors and staff have considered land at Haro Woods, along the Upper Harbour and at the muchloathed Viewfield Road industrial site, but McLoughlin and Hartland now represent the best available options, he said. “The delay connected with us trying to find new sites elsewhere – which would be every bit of hard as it’s been up to now – or to develop a tertiary system, or trying to oppose treatment altogether – we could do any of those things, but I’m virtually certain that wouldn’t change the outcome. But it would result in those federal and provincial grants being reduced or eliminated.” The CRD, province and federal government are responsible for one-third of the $783-million core area secondary sewage treatment project, while any cost overruns are the responsibility of CRD taxpayers. dpalmer@vicnews.com

The View Royal Casino is looking to make good on some old plans by prettying up an empty lot and turning it into additional parking. The casino purchased the former Imperial Oil property on Wilfert Road as part of an expansion plan started in 2007. That plan was never fully realized due to the economic downturn the following year. While expansion is still not in the cards, the casino is working with the town to tie up a few loose ends. Upgrades to Island Highway in 2013 set the stage for improvements to Wilfert Road and the property to go ahead, pending approval from View Royal council. The intent is to combine the vacant lot with the rest of the casino property. The rear part of the property, bordering Millstream Creek estuary, will be dedicated to the town as parkland. The rest
will become a parking lot, with some aesthetic upgrades. “The corner’s not overly attractive from a landscaping point of view,” said Terrance Doyle, VP of property development and operations services for Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. The hope, he said, is for work to commence later this year or early 2015. “We’ve been just taking our time moving through this with the city and all the commitments and all the requirements. It’s been really co-operative. It’s been a real pleasure working with the Town of View Royal.” A public hearing will be held Tuesday, April 15 at View Royal town hall (45 View Royal Ave.) and both Doyle and casino general manager Kwai Lam will be available to answer questions. Although a broader expansion isn’t on the horizon, the casino is in the midst of refreshing the gaming floor, installing around 100 new machines. Lam said keeping things fresh is essential to pleasing current guests and attracting new ones. “It’s still challenging, like it is for all businesses,” he said. “We’re an entertainment business, we’re always fighting for that entertainment dollar. The students say experience with bullying in their pasts and seeing others struggling with it drove their desire to complete the project. While the amount of bullying they see at Belmont is minimal, the students say that’s partly because most of it has gone online. “I want to make sure no kid has to go through what I went through,” said Ashliegh Burton, Grade 12. “It’s easier to hide your face rather than saying it to someone’s face. … It’s just easier to hide behind a computer,” Kennedy said. Over a year in the making, the Rainbow Mural made its debut on the north wall of the school at a school event Wednesday afternoon featuring a barbecue and music from local band NorthTown. Observatory supporters hope for May reopening Christine van Reeuwyk News staff
Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich are confident the national historic site will reopen to the public this spring, though slightly later than originally anticipated. The Centre of the Universe, which houses interactive educational displays and historic astronomy artifacts, was closed to the public last August due to federal funding cuts. The observatory’s Plaskett telescope was also closed to public tours.

Dollars add up on sewage plan The Capital Regional District’s plan to build a sewage treatment plant at McLoughlin Point hit the proverbial brick wall this week when Esquimalt council refused to rezone the property. The decision followed a marathon of public hearings that stretched over three months. It’s the latest fiasco to hamper a project that has seen its fair share of bickering between municipalities and even pitted neighbour against neighbour. Esquimalt was certainly offered what appears to be a sweet deal if the McLouglin Point site was approved: $13 million in amenities, including oceanfront walkways, a million-dollar bike and pathway system on Lyall Street, public art, bike lanes, road improvements and $55,000 a year for at least five years. The township now says it wants nothing to do with the McLouglin Point plan, basing its decision on public opinion. Fair enough. But the CRD must still dig itself out of this mess. The plant, whether it goes in Esquimalt or somewhere else, must still be built – as mandated by both the B.C. and federal governments. So where does this leave the CRD and province? They now have tough decisions to make: overrule a CRD-member municipality and force the project through or propose alternative sites. No matter what happens from here on out, it’s going to cost us all more money to flush. Municipal politicians owe it to all taxpayers – whether they are from Esquimalt, Victoria, Metchosin or elsewhere – to keep the costs of sewage treatment down while providing the most efficient and affordable system. The CRD estimates for every month of delay another $1 million is added to the project’s overall costs. Ching! Ching! What do you think? ICF headed down wrong track Counting on Via Rail to provide any kind of passenger service here on Vancouver Island is like trying to hitch up some dinosaurs to a plow. Never again will we be able to make a good business case for heavy rail transport on the Island, as the idea of using the “Budd Cars” is unworkable – they are too old and too expensive to maintain. Via Rail is not able to move far enough from their “train train” thinking to even consider light rapid transit to make passenger service possible and economically feasible. We need to move people quickly, efficiently and on schedules that make sense. Add in courier services and light freight, and the passenger portion of the business becomes the gravy after the expenses are met. Technology has come a long way in the last decade. We can have solar powered pop-up LED crossing barriers, cameras at crossings that activate when the train is a half-kilometre out so the driver can see ahead and more. All of this must be considered in order to have a speedy, efficient and useful service. I don’t think Via Rail can do it. Alan MacKinnon Nanaimo
Politicians need to learn to behave to win public trust Dear Politicians, We the people have had enough of you wasting our tax dollars. Effective immediately, we the taxpayers will deposit our taxes into a trust account instead of paying them directly to you. When you want to get paid, we will write you a cheque (if we feel it is not too much). If you want a raise, we will consider it (as long as the rest of us get raises, too). If the economy does not improve, we will cut back on some expenses. You will have to work fewer hours and get smaller paycheques. Most of us do not have benefits, so why should we pay for yours? As for your expenses, pay for them yourselves and submit the bills. We will reimburse you for the ones we feel are legitimate. No more free trips for spouses, $700 hotel rooms and lavish dinners. Chief Electoral Officer Harry Neufeld says that there have been only a handful of deliberate fraud cases in either federal or provincial elections. Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand confirmed it. Mr. Neufeld said that expanded use of Elections Canada’s Voter Information Card could reduce the need for vouching. If this government wants to reduce the use of vouching, why not give Elections Canada even more tools to keep track of eligible voters in order to produce more accurate VICs? If they are so concerned about errors being made by poll workers, why not give Elections Canada better funding to hire and fully train those people well before each election? A quaint vision of levelheaded European families heading to the pub for dinner with their perhaps mature-beyond-their-years kids in tow is common in North America. The story continues that those children grow up accustomed to being around alcohol and are less likely to overindulge when old enough to procure it on their own. Whether or not this vision is a reality is becoming relevant, as the province considers implementing a change to liquor laws later this year that would allow minors in pubs if accompanied by adults. The general consensus is it’s an oversimplified fantasy. Kara Thompson, a post-doctoral fellow with the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of B.C., specializes in adolescent substance use, particularly alcohol. The idea that you can reduce the allure of alcohol to youth by normalizing drinking and making it less taboo doesn’t really work, she said, despite stories people tell of children drinking wine with dinner in France. “That’s a very, very common misperception,” Thompson said. “Yes, alcohol is used differently in those cultures and so it’s more normalized, (but) they experience … as much alcohol-related prob-

lems as we experience.” Jessica Ball, a professor with UVic’s school of youth and child care, said it should be remembered the majority of adults do not engage in problem drinking, and therefore the majority of youth will not develop drinking problems, regardless of whether or not they go to pubs as a child. A more important factor perhaps is the parents, who are still role models and do play a part in how their children grow up to view alcohol consumption. “If adults can, in a public environment, role model non-problematic drinking, that might be seen as a good thing,” Ball said.
Also, with regulations likely limiting what time of the day minors can be in the pub, and with most restaurants already serving alcohol, this policy change on its own will likely make little difference, Thompson said. The overall trend in increasing youth exposure to drinking and alcohol, including selling alcohol in grocery stores, however, is causing concern. Studies have shown that in cultures where adults drink more and where children are around alcohol more, the number of youth getting drunk and drinking heavily is higher. In general, youth drinking can cause health risks, Thompson
said. Alcohol poisoning is most problematic among youth and youth drinking is linked to a reduced likelihood of going on to post-secondary education and graduating high school. Mental health problems can also arise from youth drinking. This makes decisions on how to approach the topic of alcohol with your children difficult for families, she said. There are hard choices to make about what sort of example to set and whether or not to expose your children to alcohol. “Parents struggle with making a decision about whether or not they should teach their kids how to drink responsibly or … whether to not encourage that behaviour.” While research findings are mixed, Thompson said they lean towards recommending parents not encourage their children to drink, either by buying them alcohol or even serving them a little wine with dinner. “They’re sending a message to adolescents that they, in some capacity, have approved their alcohol consumption. Those adolescents tend to be more likely to progress in their drinking a little faster and to drink in contexts outside of drinking with their parents more. The idea that it teaches kids how to drink responsibly really hasn’t been proven.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?
A
I don’t (laughing). Since Madeline was born, I had one girls night out last year and I have probably been out a handful of times in the past 3-1/2 years. My joy truly is my work, which is a calling, it’s a passion. But my time with Madeline is very special, too.
Q
What are you reading right now? What do you read with your daughter?
A
The last one I read for myself, on an airplane, was Proof of Heaven by Dr. Eben Alexander. The last book I actually read (with my daughter) was Wanda the Witch. At 3-1/2, she’s pretty incredible, she’s moved on to chapter books. Every two weeks we go to the library and pick out about 10 books.

What is your favourite family activity to share together?
A
Going to the beach in East Sooke Park and poking at squishy things in the tidal pools. It’s nice coming from Ontario where you can’t go in lake because of the bacteria count. We just pack up and spend the whole day there.

The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A
Getting cuddles from my daughter, the cuddle in the morning and that cuddle at night, and when she randomly says, ‘I love you mommy.’
Recently I met the father of eight and 10 year olds, who seemed stunned to discover that his life’s work now involved taxiing children around. I smiled empathetically, patted his arm and said, “It will get worse.” But as I look back over 18 years of driving Susan my kids here, there and everywhere, I know for a fact: it was a blessing. We had the best times in the car, sang the most songs, had deep conversations. I can also see that as the years went by, the nature of driving kids around changed, from those days when they could suddenly read every road sign we’d pass, to years later, when I’d pick up a carload of post-party teens at 2 a.m., no questions asked. But amid those early car-bound years, sits that unforgettable stage: “the question period,’ when queries weren’t asked, they were sprayed at you like a hose. My elder daughter Danica was six and Sierra, four, when I counted the number of questions I faced in a one hour in the car. Danica fired up the minute tire touched pavement, asking a total of 54 questions. Sierra, who had to wait for Danica to catch her breath, squeezed in eight, totalling one question per minute. No wonder my brain throbbed. Later, in studying their questions,

In the past decade, many parents in Greater Victoria have faced the daycare dilemma. It’s not uncommon for parents to register with a facility soon after becoming pregnant, simply to be put on a waiting list in hopes of securing a future space for their child. And while the addition of more in-home and other unlicensed daycares has made spaces a little easier to come by in recent years, parents who demand a certain level of education in those caring for and teaching their young children continue to find it a challenge. An early childhood educator (ECE) working in the field for 17 years, Moss Rock Preschool teacher Danielle Davis is familiar with how difficult it can be to find a daycare or preschool spot for a toddler or pre-Kindergarten student. Just five weeks after becoming pregnant with her daughter in 2010, she started the search and was put on three wait lists. “It’s becoming the face of child care in our community. Parents are faced with really tough choices,” she says. With not all care facilities and arrangements created equally,

parents have to ask themselves, ‘what level of care and early learning am I willing to accept for my child?’ While Davis insists that environments where children work with trained educators can be more beneficial to the child’s development, parents in a must-work position often need to rely on less-educated caregivers, at least for a while. “I have a friend who gave up a spot in a good family daycare because he wanted to put his son into a group situation with ECE’s, and where there would be more exposure to kids his own age. Aware that not every caregiver has their ECE diploma or plans to pursue it, she says it’s important the bar be raised for everyone working in the field. Twice a year, the organization offers a Family Child Care training course for unlicensed operators planning to work out of their homes, a category that makes up 43 per cent of all care and preschool situations in B.C., Macey says. “We try to raise the standard of care in all settings,” she says of the educational offering.
For single parents struggling to make ends meet while bringing up a young child, the care conundrum can be particularly troubling, says Christine Kenwood, acting executive director of the 1UP Single Parent Resource Centre. “Most of our clients have incomes well below the poverty line, so a lot of their issues with daycare are around not being able to afford it,” she says. “You get into this vicious circle where you can’t (accept work) if you can’t afford daycare, but if you can’t go to work, you can’t afford daycare.” One of the long-term goals of 1UP is to offer daycare onsite for people attending classes at the centre. It offers a babysitting subsidy for new immigrants, people new to town or single parents in isolation. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. The Focus ST was introduced last year and this year we get the Fiesta ST “hot hatch.” I’ve been a huge fan of the Fiesta. In fact, I prefer it to the bigger Focus. It is a perfect city runabout with go-kart-like handling and a stylish little package. Looks For 2014, all Fiesta models get a minor facelift with a new front grille and headlights. The ST is easy to spot because of the black honeycomb grille with an ST badge, bigger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler hanging over the rear window, a bigger rear air diffuser with twin exhaust tips and blacked out trim around the windows. The ST looks like it means business. There are two exterior options that might be worth the money. Upgraded paint colours like ‘Molten Orange’ or ‘Green Envy Metallic’ cost $400 and the smoked grey wheels with red brake calipers cost $500 more. The base ST at $24,999 comes very well equipped and is ready to cause some trouble. Inside The first thing that pops right out on the ST interior are the two heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats. These are not meant for big people; you just won’t fit. They are snug and supportive but lack some simple, yet important adjustments. The front of the seat sits much higher than the back so your backside is very low with your knees pointing up. This produces a sporty feel initially but the lack of adjustment prevents the driver from being able to stretch their legs. The dash is updated to include a MyFord Touch screen for radio, phone, navigation and climate functions. The screen is rather small and far from the driver, which makes accessing the small, virtual buttons on the screen a challenge. The ST comes standard with very powerful front seat heaters, automatic climate control, a fat leather steering wheel

with redundant radio controls and a leather covered manual shifter. The back seat has always been tight in the Fiesta; this is perfect for a single person or couple. Drive In an era of cars that almost drive themselves, the Fiesta ST is a throwback to a time when the driver felt connected to the machine. The suspension is much
firmer than the regular Fiesta, almost harsh over bumpy roads but the feedback to the driver through the tight steering ratio, firm chassis and the grippy Recaro seats is superb. The turbocharged, direct injection 1,6L Ecoboost engine pumps out 197hp. It’s only sold with a super-slick manual transmission that shifts with no effort at all and the clutch is precise. In such a small car, this engine lets the driver do pretty much anything at will. Want to pass on the highway? No problem. Want to scoot away from a traffic light? No effort at all. This really is a car that
does everything very well, including getting good fuel economy when the throttle is used lightly: using only 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. Verdict At $24,999, the price might seem a bit steep for a subcompact car but this little machine comes almost fully loaded for that price. The options available are not “must have” items so the price can be kept in check. This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles. Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I
gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

Four-time World Rally Champion, Tommi Mäkinen, is behind the wheel of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in the middle of nowhere, California. I’m riding shotgun along with two others in the back. The ease and effortlessness in which he wrangles the 305 turbocharged horses of the Subaru via the six-speed manual gearbox is really no surprise. After all, he’s not a champion because he looks good doing it. So, if the pro can make it look and feel as perfect as
a summer’s day, I should be able to as well, right? I slip into the captain’s chair of the STI – without Tommi in the car, thank goodness – and take to the 3.1-mile track. Prior to the hot laps, I had driven the outgoing 2014 Subaru STI on the same course. I’d be back-to-back testing these all-wheel drive machines to see how the engineering prowess has, yet again, continued to make a vehicle with a cultlike following even better. mance, that wasn’t my goal. The goal was to experience first-hand how docile yet potent Subaru’s famed sedan took to the high speeds and corners of the club track. I had no desire to hand the keys over to my colleagues as they eagerly anticipated their time in the Rally Blue beauty. It would be sacrilege if I didn’t insert some technical jargon into the reasoning why the STI scored big points on the road test. Without getting too deep into the engineering, here are the top three take-home points of this incredible vehicle. One: the increased use of high-strength steel makes for a stiffer and stronger body, and decreases its tendency to twist and bend in corners. The result? A more predictable handling sedan that isn’t easily irked and stays firmly planted to the ground. Furthermore, the 2015 STI achieves 16 per cent less body roll than before. Two: You have the practicality of added dimensions. There is 25 mm added to wheelbase, there is 900 mm more legroom in back and you get 20L more cargo space (from 320L to 340L.) Three: The Base WRX and STI don’t have a rear spoiler. The Sport and Sport-tech WRX has a trunk lip spoiler and the corresponding STI trims have the “table for six” or very large spoiler. Perhaps it’s also sacrilege to not put the emphasis of this review on the design and engineering of this new generation of STI. After all,

Preventative mainentance extends lifespan As the economy begins to rebound, a good percentage of motorists have resolved to keep their vehicles on the road longer in an effort to stretch their automobile dollars. That’s a sound resolution, and one that is not necessarily difficult to accomplish. Contrary to popular belief, cars are built to last, and it’s often a driver’s poor habits that reduce a car’s life expectancy. Drivers can lengthen a vehicle’s lifespan by employing preventive maintenance that should keep a car running strong for years to come. Air filter When examining the vehicle’s air filter (check the vehicle manual for location), look for dirt or dust buildup. If the filter is filthy, simply replace it. Auto parts stores sell air filters, and most drivers shouldn’t have trouble replacing a filter by themselves. A dirty air filter can negatively effect fuel economy and make it seem as though a vehicle is constantly going uphill in a stiff wind. When a dirty air filter is replaced, drivers will notice an instant impact in
how the car drives and are likely to save a few dollars at the filling station as well. Belts and hoses Issues with belts or hoses are often recognizable to the naked eye, regardless of a driver’s automotive skill. A hose in poor condition can appear bulging or brittle, and should not feel too soft or too hard. If a hose exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it. A belt that’s worn or frayed should also be replaced. Brake fluid One of the more expensive repair jobs on a vehicle is to replace the brakes. Brakes will need to be replaced over the course of a vehicle’s lifespan, but drivers should routinely check the vehicle’s brake fluid. Without sufficient brake fluid, the brakes’ lifespan decreases dramatically. Checking the brake fluid is easy; look in the owner’s manual to find the brake fluid reservoir and remove the lid). The reservoir will likely have instructions on the inside advising how much brake fluid should be added. If the fluid is below the line of demarcation,
add fluid up to that line. But be careful not to overfill. Check the brake fluid levels on a monthly basis. Motor oil Oil change guidelines have changed dramatically thanks to better cars and more reliable motor oils. But it still helps to check motor oil levels after every fill up. If motor oil levels are low, add more oil. If oil is significantly low after each fill up, consult a mechanic just to be safe. Exhaust Once a year, be it at a routine tune up or should
repair work be necessary, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s emissions. Failing an emissions test might be against the law, and a failed test could be indicative of a larger problem. In addition, inspect the muffler and exhaust pipe for holes, particularly after winter, when debris from snow trucks may do significant damage. Replace any damaged or rusted parts. Power steering Power steering fluid should also be inspected on a monthly basis. When checking power steering
fluid, also inspect the pump for any leaks. Tires Keeping tires properly inflated pays numerous dividends. Properly inflated tires make it easier for the
engine to operate, lowering fuel costs while also decreasing wear and tear on the engine. The owner’s manual should list a recommended tire pressure, and the local filling station likely

has an air pump. Maintaining tires also involves checking for wear and tear. Uneven wear could indicate the tires are misaligned. Discuss this with your mechanic. Transmission fluid When checking transmission fluid, do so while the car is running and after the engine has warmed up. Always be certain to put the parking brake on when checking transmission fluid. If the vehicle needs transmission fluid, add the recommended fluid but be careful not to overfill. Prolonging a vehicle’s lifespan is not as difficult as it sounds. Oftentimes, all it takes is routine, maintenance to keep a car on the road for years and years.

(MS) — With the return of warm weather comes the return of time spent outdoors. After a winter spent huddled up inside avoiding the cold, the arrival of spring is often welcomed with open arms. The welcome mat for spring often includes a weekend getaway with the family to soak up some spring rays. For those about to embark on a springtime road trip, consider the following money saving tips to ensure your trip is as inexpensive as it is enjoyable. • Bring something for the kids to do in the car. While parents might enjoy hitting the open road and pushing the pedal to the metal, kids often get bored the longer a trip is, and that can lead to frequent and costly pitstops to help quell that boredom. Parents can prepare for that inevitable boredom and avoid such stopovers by bringing some entertainment along for the kids. Portable DVD players are relatively inexpensive and can keep kids occupied on long trips. For those renting a vehicle for their trip, inquire at the rental agency as to the availability of vehicles with built-in DVD players. Parents can also employ more traditional road trip fare by playing some favourite games from yesteryear. These games include the License Plate Game, I Spy or 20 Questions to make a trip more fun for adults and children alike. • Visit family or friends en route to your destination. Those heading out on an extended weekend getaway can save money on hotels or meals by calling family
and friends and either staying overnight or simply visiting for a meal. Grandma and Grandpa would no doubt appreciate a visit and might even offer to let you stay the night and save the expense of a costly hotel. • Don't get lost. While no one plans on getting lost, it does happen, even in the current day and age when GPS systems and cellphones enable drivers to easily access the Internet and get directions. And getting lost can prove costly if you end up driving around looking for the right way to go. If you don't have a GPS system, print out directions and be sure to bring them along for the trip. Also, when printing out directions ahead of time, look for alternate routes that might save time and, as a result, money. Visit different web sites to see if one offers substantially shorter routes than another. The disparity between recommended driving routes might be greater than you think. • Pre-pack lunches and snacks. Instead of stopping along the way for lunch, pre-pack lunches. This can help save money and also allows parents to plan healthier meals, as many roadside restaurants are fast food joints that kids might love but parents certainly don't. When packing lunches, let the kids pack a few items for themselves. This will make them enjoy the meals more and help them forget about the meals they're not getting from their favorite fast food restaurants.

Change cabin air filter before allergens strike (MS) – The worst is over, we’re thinking. With winter officially behind us, we need only look to warmer days ahead. Not so for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. A short winter season followed by an early spring — as we have experienced lately — may only hasten the onset of allergens and pollen in the air, causing an itchy and runny nose, teary eyes, sneezing and congestion in those who are prone to allergies. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, an organization of allergists, immunologists and related professionals, “Avoiding your allergy triggers is the best way to reduce symptoms.” (aaaai.org.) Limiting outdoor activities on days with high pollen counts, keeping windows closed (at home or in the car) to keep pollen out, and taking a shower after coming indoors, are some of the steps the academy recommends. However, “keeping your car’s windows closed while driving may not be
sufficient if your car’s cabin air filter is clogged,” said Chuck Kerrigan, Director of Marketing for Purolator. Two kinds of cabin filters are available — the particulate cabin filter and the activated charcoal cabin filter. BCHL Grizzlies move forward after a tough end to playoffs Hope for next year eases semis sting Don Descoteau News staff
The end result wasn’t what they wanted, but the Victoria Grizzlies are looking toward next season with optimism. Having watched his team absorb three tough B.C. Hockey League semifinal round robin losses, the last of which was a 4-3 triple-overtime decision to Coquitlam, Grizzlies’ head coach Craig Didmon reflected on the takeaway from the playoff run. “I mean, it was a tough series,” he said of the semis, which saw the smaller, but nimble Grizzlies lose 5-4 to a big, tough Vernon team and drop two games to the high-scoring Express. “You look at it a few days later and realize it was a tough run for the boys. Maybe a different type of series might have done better for us, but we outshot the opponent every game. And we continued to play our game. I think we started to get a little bit of fatigue because of the gruelling first two rounds.” Looking at next year, he said the Grizzlies have a “great group, a really good core coming back,”
led by the likes of Mark McLellan and Jessie Schwartz. The team loses the Fitzgeralds (Gerry, Leo and Myles), defencemen Jaden Schmeisser and Chris Albertini and forward Travis Stephens to graduation, but younger players developed well, Didmon said. “This is a group that’s learned a lot this year. I think we’ve got a good well-rounded squad looking at coming back next year.” Goalies Alec Dillon, 17, and Nick Renyard, 19, are eligible to return, but their careers may
take a different direction next season (see box). Dillon voiced disappointment about this season, but said good things came out of the Grizzlies’ experience. “We thought we had the team that could have gone farther,” he said. “From where we were as (a club) two years ago, when they traded away the whole team and there was talk of folding, we’ve come a long way. Young goalie watched through BCHL season Alec Dillon felt a muted glare of the spotlight this season as he went about his business with the Victoria Grizzlies. The 6-foot-5, 170-pound goaltender was often in the crosshairs for National Hockey League scouts parked on the edges of BCHL rinks, and as such, he finds himself rated 13th among North American goalies by Central Scouting. “I never really worried about it throughout the whole season.” At the same time, he said, “I’m excited to see if I (get drafted) and I’m honoured to be ranked.” He’s taking a bit of time off to “hang out with my friends,” concentrate on Grade 12 at Belmont secondary and go through “the whole prom and grad thing.” Dillon is committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and plans to attend in 2015. For now, the plan is to finish out his junior career as a Grizzlie, but he’ll wait until the June NHL entry draft draft to make that decision. Fellow Grizzlies netminder Nick Renyard has had some interest expressed in him by Canadian post-secondary teams.

The popularity of home and garden TV shows has been an inspiration for Stephen Foster. Married to an interior designer and keenly interested in home improvement projects, the Greater Victoria Realtor was looking for a edge as he built his fledgling real estate career. With film and television experience under his belt, Foster’s answer has been to meld his various skills together and create a service that gives people a better sense of what a home and its surrounding neighbourhood are all about – before the potential buyer steps foot inside. “Every single house I (have a listing for) gets a video,” he says. Where some agents limit video marketing coverage to their big-ticket, exclusive properties, he takes every property on its own merits and looks for the highlights. “I feel there is value in everybody’s assets,” he says, adding those appealing characteristics can be found all around a home. Using video as a tool to sell homes is not new, but Foster has taken the strategy to a new level, posting the videos on his personal website and creating a YouTube channel that now has more than 500 subscribers. With many potential buyers, even those just curious about what’s on the market or for sale in their neighbourhood, looking online first for details about homes, Foster says, video is the next step to linking busy potential buyers to properties. “I just thought, why not give

people a different impression of a home,” Foster says, adding the fact he is comfortable in front of a camera helps him make the presentations fun and entertaining. “A sale is still about reaching out to people, and that was a way of connecting on a wider scale.” The explosion of YouTube and its links to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and others has allowed Foster’s service to blossom in the last couple of years. Anyone without a background in film and TV would no doubt find the process of creating individual videos for each listing a time-consuming, labour-intensive activity. But Foster says the process has been worthwhile and provides him with some quality leads. While he watches his advertising budget closely, he says it’s still important to use a multi-pronged approach, using print and other mediums to reach a broad audience.
“Initially I had to focus where I could get as many people as possible,” he says. “With my background, taking people through a home by video was of paramount importance. The impact has been great, and it’s growing as people see how I do my work.” He’s had buyers contact him from Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatchewan who have seen his videos. Realtor Fergus Kyne, a former schoolteacher who’s been selling real estate in Greater Victoria since 1998, also uses video, but in a slightly different, more subjective way. He offers listing reviews in short video segments – often featuring guests who provide ancillary services to the real estate industry – in which he gives his opinion on various aspects of properties currently listed for sale. “I was looking for a different way to attract buyers, and the idea came up to help buyers review listings,

The idea, he says, was to be able to say, “XYZ property at 1234 Elm St. is priced very well and I don’t think it will last long,” where another home might be perceived as being somewhat overpriced for the market. While he finds his forté is still working with people face to face, the video service has offered another way of getting his image out there as someone with expertise in the housing market. With analysis and what-if style TV programs like Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Property Virgins continuing to prove popular, the use of video by Greater Victoria Realtors is likely only going to increase. Given the time involved in producing, some agents will still have to be convinced that it’s worth their while.
