Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser put pressure on Minister of Transportation Todd Stone during a session the legislature last week for alternate access to Port Alberni than Highway 4. Fraser said with major initiatives in the works for the deep-sea port, a second access to the Alberni Valley has become even more critical. Stone said he “shares the member’s excitement for the potential that exists with that port”, and added that Alberni Valley community groups should “stay tuned” for details relating to the upcoming Vancouver Island transportation strategy. The Island transportation plan will be part of the BC Liberal government’s 10-year transportation vision, Stone added.

Chowder garners more awards

Starboard Grill owner and chef Brad DeClercq continues to collect awards for his candied salmon chowder. DeClercq won both the people’s choice and judges’ choice awards at the Pacific Rim Chowder Chow Down in Ucluelet during the Pacific Rim Whale Fest in March.

Snowbirds head west for spring

The Snowbirds aerial demonstration team and the CF-18 air demonstration squadrons will return to 19 Wing Comox for their annual spring training on Thursday, April 17 and fly until May 7. The CF-18 will arrive in Comox on April 24. Both teams will practice twice a day, varying in times and location depending on location and weather. The CF-18 will not fly on Sundays, according to a 19 Wing press release. The demos will be visible from around 19 Wing Comox. No information was given on a public show, as the teams have provided in the past.

Port Alberni resident Aaron Colyn is hoping to turn his hobby of making home-brewed beer into a successful small craft brewery. And he has med school to thank for it. Colyn was enrolled in Vancouver Island University, on track to attend medical school when he took a course on the microbiology of fermentation. And what better examples of fermentation but beer and wine? “It was basically a class on how beer is made,” says Colyn. When the class was finished he set up his own home-brewing system, and that set the course for his future.

Colyn frequented the Longwood Brew Pub in Nanaimo, where brewmasters were only too happy to explain the finer points of craft brewing. Colyn has already created several of his own recipes, including Hop Mess IPA featured in his promotional video. Others include a blond, an IPA, Belgian witbier, dunkelweizen and pumpkin spice. He makes his experimental brews five gallons at a time. The all-grain brewing system he would like to purchase with his crowdfunding monies is a 62-litre electric brewing system.

“Instead of going to med school I ended up buying a whole bunch of home brewing equipment.” Now he’s getting serious about craft beer. Last Friday Colyn put up a Facebook site for Twin City Brewing, and within hours had almost 500 likes. By the end of the first day of his crowdfunding campaign, which started Monday, Colyn had already raised 11 per cent of his total. “I had no idea the response would be so immediate,” he said. “We chose to launch

the Facebook page before starting the fundraising campaign to generate some buzz and I think it’s been met with a lot of intrigue.” He has 60 days in which to raise $6,800 to cover the costs of a small-scale, all-grain brewing system. It is the first step in his business plan of opening a craft brewery in Port Alberni. Colyn graduated from VIU in 2012 and has been working steadily in Nanaimo. He plans to keep his full-time job while starting his brewery

The municipal election isn’t until November, but a pair of Alberni Valley citizens are already campaigning for spots on Port Alberni city council. Denis Sauve and Seva Dhaliwal have organized their DENIS campaigns, SAUVE established social media sites and continue to attend council meetings to keep apprised of local issues. Sauve retired from the Port Alberni RCMP on Jan. 18, after nearly three decades of serving various comSEVA munities. DHALIWAL He declined his final move with the RCMP, deciding he wants to stay in Port Alberni. Now he wants to serve his community with a seat on city council. “This has been in the works since I arrived in Port Alberni 10 years ago,” Sauve said. “It’s always been a wish. I’ve worked general duty policing, VIP, UN duties; I’ve done everything I wished to do by serving my community or serving my country.” Sauve will focus on financial issues and seniors’ care among other issues for his platform. While some information is known about the Alberni Land Company trophy, little is known about the Challenge it was awarded for.

general meeting of the Alberni Athletic Association. “No one knew that it existed or even knew what it was,” he said. “We all thought it was important though so we gave the go-ahead to try and get it.” Spencer contacted an intermediary for the seller and told him the association was willing to pay the $850 price tag and bring the trophy back to Port Alberni. “Then they upped the price by $500,” he said. An anonymous donor helped the society buy the trophy. Athletic association member Bill Andrews volunteered to drive to Penticton to repatriate the piece of history from a precious metal dealer. “I thought about it all the way up there and it was quite something when I first saw it and read the inscription,” Andrews, 75, said. “Every once in awhile on the way back I’d take it out of

the box then just look at it in wonder.” The cup is back in Port Alberni physically, but little is known about it. “I showed it around to some old timers in town and they don’t even know much about it,” Spencer said. “A lot of them weren’t even around yet when the cup was made (1912).” Few clues about the trophy’s provenance can be found on the cup itself. The cup was a “challenge trophy” gifted to the Port Alberni Athletic Association by the Alberni Land Company in July 1912. Alex Spencer, 80, doesn’t remember the cup itself and never saw it while growing up in Port Alberni. But he does remember the association and the era it came from. “It comes from the time when Port Alberni used to be two different towns,” Alex Spencer said. “The

silver trophy denoting a bygone era in the Alberni Valley has been rescued from a garage sale in Keremeos and repatriated back to Port Alberni. Alberni Athletic Association president Larry Spencer gave a glimpse of the trophy on Tuesday. The trophy stands approximately one foot high. Scrawled in ornate letters are the words “Challenge Trophy. The gift of the Alberni Land Company to the Port Alberni Athletic Association. July 1912”. “It’s a good feeling knowing that we were able to return a bit of the Valley’s history back here,” Spencer said. “And it’s 100 years old and in mint condition.” The mystery of the trophy began on Valentine’s Day this year. Spencer was on vacation when he received an e-mail from Port Alberni City Manager Ken Watson about the matter. “He said that someone had been in touch with the mayor about it, saying that they bought this trophy at a garage sale in Keremeos,” Spencer said. “It was on the verge of being sold and melted down.” When Spencer returned to Port Alberni he raised the matter at the annual

It was like a demilitarized zone,” he said. “I’m kidding. There was a rivalry but it was a friendly one.” The Port Alberni Athletic Association used to be located at what is now the city hall property on Argyle Street, Alex Spencer said. The trophy likely had to do with competitions between the two associations in basketball, soccer or badminton. “We had the Athletics and they had their own team—the Port Alberni Cubs,” Alex Spencer said. “We had a rivalry with the Cubs and used to beat them, pretty regularly too.” The Port Alberni Athletic Association Hall burned down sometime in the late 1930s or 1940s. It was never rebuilt, and its members and joined the Alberni Athletic Association, Alex Spencer said. The Alberni Valley Museum wanted to acquiring the piece but couldn’t because it has no acquisition budget, director Jamie Morton said. Continued/ A26

Family donates to hall

A new Ministry of Education capital project funding guideline isn’t expected to have an immediate impact in School District 70. According to the MOE, school districts will be required to ante up 50 per cent of the cost of future capital projects and seismic upgrades, and will be expected to do so out of their cash surplus funds. The policy change stems from a 2010, Auditor General report which noted that there is too much cash in public sector agencies like school districts than is needed for operational purposes. In the subsequent 2014 provincial

budget, the Ministry of Finance launched the ‘Cash Management Strategy’ which requires school districts to help underwrite the cost of capital projects. The plan won’t affect school operating grants. “It will save taxpayer money by reducing government borrowing for capital projects,” a MOE spokesperson said. Funds already earmarked by school districts for other projects won’t be affected. And provincial funding for capital projects in districts without significant cash surpluses will remain unchanged, the spokesperson added. The ministry will evaluate future capital projects on a caseby-case basis with school districts, the spokesperson said. The policy won’t have an immediate effect

in School District 70, superintendent Cam Pinkerton said, because the district doesn’t have a cash surplus. The district only has one capital project, the Ucluelet Elementary and Secondary schools replacement. But it was already on the books and therefore won’t be affected, Pinkerton said. “We have a letter about this from the ministry and they’ve indicated that they’re only looking at school districts that have surpluses,” he said. School districts dipping into surplus funds to ante up for capital and seismic work raises broad fundamental questions, said Teresa Rezansoff, president of the BC School Trustees Association. The first question involves how the ministry is treating the term “surplus”. According to

Rezansoff, districts incur surpluses for various reasons. They may have received funds at the end of the year prior to closing their books and before earmarking the funds. They could be saving for future projects. Or they could be trying to pay unfunded liabilities that arise, she said. “Redirecting surpluses to pay for capital projects will negatively impact district initiatives,” Rezansoff said. The new policy undermines school boards by hindering their budget management and long-term planning processes. “To have local governments now come in and question local spending decisions is very troublesome,” she said. “It feels like an interference with our role as elected decision makers.”

The family raised $2,885 for the elevator fund through a raffle. Microbrewery garners interest in city “Many breweries use a similar small-scale system to test recipes and new styles of beer before ramping up to a full-size batch. We want to start with a top-notch small-scale system and show the people of Port Alberni that we have what it takes to bring high quality, hand-crafted ales and lagers to the Valley.” Once he puts the

new system in place he can start perfecting recipes, but he will be a long way from opening a craft brewery. And he won’t be allowed to sell or distribute the small batches of brew. The licensing process for alcohol manufacturing is onerous. Colyn is still working on his business plan and looking into location, zoning and licensing

requirements. “There are a lot of steps involved,” he said. Port Alberni city council got a formal introduction to the Valley’s newest pediatrician. West Coast General Hospital site administrator Ellen Brown introduced Doctor Kofi Affram to mayor and council at their March 24 meeting. The married father of three joins Dr. Chris McCollister and Dr. Rhiannon Hughes in the hospital’s pediatric department. “This is still all very new to me. This is very special. I’ve never had this before,” said Affram

after being presented with a gift from councillors. Affram worked as a doctor in London, England, as well as in Ghana prior to coming to Port Alberni. A friend of local doctor Kennedy Fadey, Affram was familiar with Port Alberni before he arrived. He’d expressed an interest in moving to Canada and had incentive to work in Port Alberni, Brown said. “We’re happy that he wanted to work in Canada. he Hupacasath First Nation is headed back to court to try and keep the federal government from ratifying the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion Protection Act (FIPPA). Tribal officials filed an appeal with the Federal Court of Appeals and expected the Crown to file by March 17. “This is an incredibly important case for First Nations. FIPPA could have serious impacts on our rights, title and resources,” Hupacasath spokesperson Brenda Sayers said. The tribe is appealing for two reasons, Sayers said. One, that Chief Justice Paul S. Crampton didn’t fully comprehend the impact FIPPA would have on the Hupacasath’s right to self-government. And

Candidates already campaign for council He has been vocal during the public periods of council meetings, especially when councillors voted in their own raises. “I wasn’t for it,” he said. “Our taxes at that time were hovering at five per cent...it’s not that they’re not deserving; the fact is it wasn’t the right time. A lot of us are facing cutbacks.” Sauve said council is in need of some innovation if the city is to progress. “We came back the last election that we wanted something new and we wanted to get rid of the oldschool politics. Was it right? It doesn’t really matter. We do need experience on council; but we need fresh ideas.” This is Dhaliwal’s second time running for city council; she also ran in 2011 but failed to gain a seat. Jobs and agriculture are two important things that Dhaliwal is campaigning for in 2014. On her Facebook site, she advocates attracting different postsecondary education opportunities for Port Alberni, such as a satellite campus for the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT) here in Port Alberni. She is in favour of the port authority’s proposed trans-

shipment hub and LNG export facility, as she feels these projects would create jobs in the region. The Alberni Valley is a fertile agricultural region, and ag-based endeavours should be supported, she said. If China had an interest in a logging company that wanted to log a tribal sacred site the tribe would oppose it. Under terms of the agreement China could then sue Canada for loss of revenue. ICF’s future looks bleak Digital wave is just beginning in B.C. We believe many, if not all, members of the Island Corridor Foundation’s board of directors have genuine, positive intentions when it comes to re-starting rail service on Vancouver Island. Which is why the contrived, back-patting, no-news conference they staged Wednesday in Nanaimo is troubling. Who, exactly, did they think they were going to fool? Why, exactly, would they stage such an event with no real progress to report? Earlier this week in Nanaimo, Parksville Coun. Marc Lefebvre introduced a motion to the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of directors expressing nonconfidence in the ICF and calling for a task force to re-examine how, or if, rail could be re-started on Vancouver Island. This is not a good development for the ICF and its CEO Graham Bruce. Regional district funding (about $900,000) is contingent upon a return of passenger rail service to where it was before it was shut down due to safety reasons. Wednesday’s no-news conference shed absolutely zero light on that contingency. So, if it was the ICF’s or Bruce’s plan to save that funding through the announcement of a supposed “tentative agreement” neither party (Southern Railway and VIA) would confirm, they failed. We believe a functioning railway to move freight and passengers would be a boost to Vancouver Island’s tourism potential and economy. Some may see it as a romantic, foolish notion, but we see it as an important cog in the Island’s future economy. It would be more reassuring if we felt the ICF had a handle on these matters and wasn’t trying to play political games. — Parksville-Qualicum Beach News

ICTORIA – Have you got one of the new B.C. driver’s licences yet? By now most drivers have the one with the unsmiling black and white mug shot, to conform to passport standards so it could be used for border identification with the magnetic swipe strip on the back. About one million of us now have the newest version, with a credit-card style digital chip that proves your residence and eligibility for our famously “free” medical care. The motor vehicle office started issuing them about a year ago, as five-year licences expire. They replace the old “CareCard” that has no expiry date. Over the years there were more than nine million CareCards issued, twice the population of B.C., as people held onto their access to our defenseless,

overworked medical system from wherever they moved to. Positive identification is only the start for this card. Each will be assigned a password that gives access to online medical records, so when patients show up at an ER, their eligibility is confirmed and any previous conditions or medications are accurately matched. (Note that medical information is not stored on the card, just an access code that goes with the password.) Patients will be able to call up their own files at home, book medical appointments and even renew prescriptions, which is where the efficiency comes in. In-person visits for routine prescription renewals are a cash cow for today’s doctors, generating guaranteed billings but often little or no health benefit. Most people will

still think of it as a driver’s licence, but it’s intended as an allpurpose government ID. If you don’t drive, you are spared the $75 licence renewal fee, and within a couple of years the cards will start providing online access to a wide range of government services. Andrew Wilkinson, minister of technology, innovation and citizens’ services, says a public consultation has shown most people are comfortable using a system they already trust for their banking. By the end of 2015, Wilkinson says about two million people will have the new cards, roughly half of B.C.’s population. Application forms converted to online access will include student loans, birth, death and marriage certificates, voter registration and even criminal record checks.

All this will be costly to set up, but the savings from having customers do their own data entry are well known, as any banker or supermarket owner can tell you. “You can understand that if you’re in the vital statistics office and this can all be done from places like Telegraph Creek and Horsefly remotely, that actually saves them a lot of money,” Wilkinson said. “There will be conversion of existing services where you have to go into an office and wait around and fill out forms. Those will be converted to online services.” It also means a decline in the number of government office jobs, and the potential for further outsourcing of services, as we have seen with Medical Services Plan administration and the back-office functions of BC Hydro. Some older readers won’t be thrilled to hear about this. They don’t want a “smart phone,” just a phone.

Mailbag: It’s all about common sense Money Sense makes sense To the Editor,

The Money Sense rankings which place Port Alberni as a very poor place in which to live are essentially correct and focus on our high unemployment, high crime rate, and low household income. Yet our “leaders” specialize in reality avoidance. One comment, for example, is that the new high school is “one of the best” in Canada despite the facts that it’s ugly, too small, and that some of its facilities are inadequate. The writer then goes on to refer to our “modern, full-facility hospital” which isn’t full facility and is too small. Where’s the advocacy to increase the acute-care beds to 60 at WCGH? Certainly not from the chamber of commerce, which limps on in an aging community that has at least 50 vacant stores south of Dunbar Street. As regards the idiocy of an LNG plant here, the facts are that both Prince Rupert and Kitimat are two shipping days closer to Asia and that the costs of building new pipelines from

northeast B.C. to here are prohibitive. There’s an outside chance that the transshipment hub down the inlet may become a reality. As regards Canal Beach, why spend almost $500,000 to put a walkway on the pilings there? There’s no view and no real purpose. A pile driving company will remove the pilings for free. Money would be better spent on acquiring the Esso property beside Harbour Quay, which has a lovely little beach from which you can swim and an area which could be grassed over. The facts are that we’ve lost about 6,000 high-paying jobs in the forest industry alone (now just over 300 employed at the paper mill which once had 1,500, for example), and there will be no economic renaissance here. The good old days are gone. Yet city council has raised our taxes by more than 50 per cent in the last five years (compounding included) and handed out absurd pay increases in a severely depressed economy. Worst place to live? Nonsense To the Editor,

In radio’s Golden Age, Art Linkletter’s show : “Kids Say The Darndest Things” was a favourite worldwide; apparently some of those cute motormouthed kids grew up to be editors. Imagine, I scribbled a humorous parody lampooning our prime minister’s attempts to play Beatles songs, only for an editor to reject it for having “too many references to hate”. If that was not the darndest and most incredulous thing heard in a long time, then it would be bettered by “MoneySense”. That magazine’s editor inconceivably ranked Port Alberni as 201st in a list of the 201 most liveable municipalities in Canada. Obviously he/ she had never had the pleasure of a visit to West Coast General Hospital, as I did recently. I was concerned about having a delicate procedure in an unmentionable cavity in my nether region. However, several marvellous people took care of me at the ultramodern full-service facility.

I’m so grateful for the expertise of surgeon Dr. Vijayanayagam coupled with the kindness of operating room nurse Rita, all under the friendly and watchful eye of anesthesiologist Dr. Rozwadowski; then into the recovery room for constant care from nurses Sue, Cindy, and the Jolly Welsh Giant Daniel. Residents of Port Alberni must lift their heads high to have such a wonderful hospital with such magnificent people in their community, and Parksvillians must be very grateful it is only a short drive away. The errant editor who oversaw that darndest and most incredulous survey should rename the magazine “NonSense”. Bernie Smith, Parksville

ICF going down wrong track To the Editor,

Counting on Via Rail to provide any kind of passenger service here on Vancouver Island is like trying to hitch up some dinosaurs to a plow. Never again will we be able to make a good business case for heavy rail transport on

the island. As to passenger service the idea of using the Budd cars is unworkable: they are too old and too expensive to maintain and so will be broken down most of the time. Via rail is not able to move far enough from their “train” thinking to even consider the idea of the light rapid transit needed to make passenger service possible and economically feasible. We need to move people quickly, efficiently and on schedules that will make sense. Couple that with the addition of courier services and light freight and the passenger portion of the business becomes the gravy after the expenses are met. Technology has come a long way in the last decade, we can have solar powered pop up LED crossing barriers that won’t be damaged even if driven over, cameras at crossings that activate when the train is a half kilometre out. All of this must be considered in order to have a speedy, efficient and useful service. I don’t think Via Rail can do it.

in the woodstove downstairs. We have a gas stove/ fireplace in the living room upstairs so of course Ollie lies in the front of the gas stove when it is operating and worships the gas fire god. Now it seems that is not close enough for Mr. Ollie to commune with his gas god so he decided to jump on top of the stove and lie down, with occasional peeks over the edge to make sure that the fire god is doing his job. I shot Ollie with my wife Les’s Nikon P7100 using fill flash. The ISO was 400, the aperture was f4.2, the shutter speed was 1/60 of a second. In Photoshop I straightened the image, lightened it a smidgen as well as slightly increased the contrast using levels. I wanted to photograph the moon in its fullness. So on the next cloudless full moon sky, off I went to the front yard gate armed with tripod, Nikon D300S with a 70-200 f2.8 lens, and remote shutter release. The specs were ISO 2000, aperture f7.1, shutter speed 1/200 of a second, using the electronic shutter release. In Photoshop I darkened the foreground so that the houses would not be prominent, and

burned in the moon (made it darker) so that it would pop in the sky. Now that the days are longer and warmer I have insured the VV (Vespa Virgin). So far I have been to the new beach (driving through the mill grounds), Harbour Quay, the fishing boat marina, Victoria Quay and the Cancer Society office. Using a wide-angle lens, I got some very different photos at the fishing boat marina, and some boring shots of people standing around at the new beach. If you see someone riding a white Vespa with a camera slung over his chest in a racing slouch ( just kidding), that is me. Last month I put on the workshop Computers and Security: What you Need to Know at the Port Alberni Library (part of the free onehour sessions at the library). It was very successful; we had 17 interested people watch the Power Point presentation. On April 15 the workshop will be The Unfear of Digital Cameras: What you Need to Know. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I

gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

Ford has done an excellent job of using its worldwide expertise to bring some very practical, yet fun to drive, small cars to North America. Using Europeans to build the Ford Focus and Fiesta for a worldwide market enabled the manufacturer to bring these superb handling cars virtually unchanged to our shores. I’ve been a huge fan of the Fiesta. In fact, I prefer it to the bigger Focus, it is a perfect city runabout with go-cart like handling and a stylish little package.

Looks

For 2014, all Fiesta models get a minor facelift with a new front grille and headlights. The ST is easy to spot because of the black honeycomb grille with an ST badge, bigger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler hanging over the rear window, a bigger rear air diffuser with twin exhaust tips and blacked out trim around the windows. The base ST at $24,999 comes very well equipped and is ready to cause some trouble.

Inside

The first thing that pops right out on the ST interior are the two heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats. These are not meant for big people, you just won’t fit. They are snug and supportive but lack some simple, yet important adjustments. The front of the seat sits much higher than the back so your backside is very low with your knees pointing up. This produces a sporty feel initially but on longer trips, the lack of adjustment prevents the driver from being able to stretch their legs. The dash has been updated to include a MyFord Touch screen for radio, phone, navigation and climate

functions. The screen is rather small and far away from the driver, which makes accessing the small, virtual buttons on the screen a challenge. However, it does look much better than the older Fiesta dash. The ST comes standard with very powerful front seat heaters, automatic climate control, a fat leather steering wheel with redundant radio controls and a leather covered manual shifter. The back seat has always been tight in the Fiesta; this is perfect for a single person or couple, not the best for a family.

In an era of cars that almost drive themselves, the Fiesta ST is a throwback to a timewhen the driver felt connected to the machine. The suspension is much firmer than the regular Fiesta, almost harsh over bumpy roads but the feedback to the driver through the tight steering ratio, firm chassis and the grippy Recaro seats is superb. Sheep finish fourth The Port Alberni Black Sheep will start their B.C. Rugby Union Vancouver Island Cowichan Cup playoffs on the road after losing 25-22 to Nanaimo Hornets on Saturday. “A very disappointing result,” Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal said. The loss put the Sheep in fourth place; they head to Cowichan to play the first place Piggies on Saturday. The Black Sheep were ahead 22-17 with six minutes left in their game on Saturday when Nanaimo took advantage of a loose ball out of a Black Sheep ruck to run 50 metres and score the winning try. “You need to score on your opportunities and that was one thing we didn’t do,” (MJHP TZY \JJPQ^ Ć^JWX Purewal said.

Alberni medals at Nationals

The Alberni Valley Wrestling Club brought home four medals from the 2014 Cadet/ Juvenile National Championships in Guelph, Ontario. Alberni also placed third in the team standings in Juvenile Men’s Greco Roman Championships. Grade 12 wrestlers Jesse and Jordan Wagner capped off their high school wrestling careers with medal winning performances at the meet. Jesse won the bronze medal in the 54 kilogram Juvenile Men’s Division. Jesse’s only loss came from multiple national champion Phillip Le from Ontario in the semi-final. He took bronze medal after pinning his opponent in the semi-final. Jordan finished fourth in the Juvenile Men’s 58 kilogram weight class in the freestyle tournament. By Ursula and Cristina Calderon West Coast author Jacqueline Windh translates stories from the last remaining pureblood Yagan person in Patagonia, Cristina Calderon. The Yagan, or Yamana, of Patagonia are the southernmost indigenous people in the world. They are also the most endangered indigenous people, says noted author Jacqueline Windh. Hai Kur Mamasu Chis (I want to tell you a story) is a collection of tales from the last remaining speaker of the Yagan language. Windh translated the book into English. Born December 7th, 1991 in Port Alberni, BC, Zakk was predeceased by his two grandfathers, Richard Coss and Maurice Blake and is survived by his loving parents, mother Kimberly Blake and father Reese Coss; brothers Neil (Lora) Ward, Dallas (Cara) Ward, his extended brothers Ben (Stephanie) Rollheiser, Andrew Rollheiser and Nolan Ward, extended sister Tammy Ward and long-time companion Brittney Olsen, nephews Maddux and Jayce, niece Layla, Gramma Jone, Gramma Mary and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Zakk graduated from A.D.S.S. and worked at Fairway Market and was currently employed at 2K Forestry in Alberni; he loved bushwork, always sharing the scenery he was fortunate enough to be a part of. Early in his life Zakk enjoyed volunteer work, usually with his mother. He was a WW 11 buff and became a printed author at 12 years of age, writing a poem about Remembrance Day. He loved politics and had a genuine interest in Olympic history; his biggest love would turn out to be music and fortunately lifelong friends shared that same love, which would evolve into “North By Nature”. Zakk leaves behind in “North By Nature” his music brothers Ryan Adhira, Mike Story and Nick Vance. A Celebration of Zakk’s life will be held on Saturday, April 12th, 2014 – 1:00 PM at the Italian Center – 4065 Sixth Avenue, Port Alberni. Food and refreshments will be served. After the establishment of Indian reserves, the Alberni Land Company owned title to land in the city under the provincial land system of the time, Morton said. The company

evolved out of the Anderson Company which owned a mill that closed in 1865. “The company held onto the land afterward, speculating that the Valley would grow,” Morton said. The company subdivided the town into Alberni first in 1880 then Port Alberni later in the early 1900s. Alberni was an agricultural area and service centre. When Port Alberni was established it had

the waterfront, mills, and railway. “The talk then was that it was better and there was more going on there but it never really worked,” he said. The trophy was likely a booster tool for the Alberni Land Company as a way to enmesh themselves with the population, but also to foster a sense of competitiveness between the two communities, Morton

said. “The ironic thing is that they owned the lands in both communities,” he added.
