The 20th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball hosted by the Boundary C 4-H Club packed the Rock Creek Fairgrounds Pavilion last Saturday night. Funds raised will help the 4-H members to participate in the Rock Creek and provincial winter fairs this fall. But 2014 is the 100th anniversary of 4-H in B.C. and there are plans afoot to celebrate the centenary. 4-H is more than just the fall fair, though. For example the Boundary District 4-H Rally Day is held each May. This year, to help celebrate 100 years of 4-H in the province, Rally Day will be a two-day affair and invitation cards for a social, dinner and dance on May 3 were given out throughout the evening to supporters and 4-H alumni (former members, leaders or parents). The Cattle Baron’s Ball featured a dinner and dance (Sonny Boys provided live music) with many donated items offered at both a silent auction and a live auction. It is clear that the community supports the work done by 4-H. Over $13,200 was raised in the live auction alone. Kevin Rothwell, General Manager for 4-H BC, conducted the auction for the second year in a row. Up for sale were several items donated by local citizens and businesses. Local artists donated numerous pieces for the auctions. John Lindquist once again went above and beyond, • See CATTLE BARON’S BALL page 9

Lions host free Easter dinner For the eighth year the Kettle River Lions Club is offering their free Easter dinner—a delicious meal each year featuring turkey, ham and all the trimmings. This year’s event happens on Easter Saturday, April 19 at 5 p.m. at the Rock Creek fairgrounds pavilion. Children are welcome. While the dinner is free of charge, it is expected that those who can afford it make a donation. Those who are for some reason not able to pay for it—it’s ok, that is what the dinner is all about. “This is our eighth Easter dinner and the

Golf course opens Kettle Valley Golf Course opened officially for the 2014 season last Friday, April 4. With the retirement of Merry English the course has some changes in administration. Aaron Rexin is the new general manager and Krisi Goddard has taken over as kitchen manager. She is planning a new, fresh menu that will be coming out in a couple of weeks. The clubhouse features some renovations this year – new beams, a trophy case, new flooring and a new counter at the till has opened that space up considerably. According to Rexin Les Jackman spearheaded the work. Others on the volunteer list were Gerald Denisle, Dick Woodford, Carl Gough, Dave March and Boundary Tool Rental. Thanks also to Ernie Rexin for donating the woodwork for the cabinet and beams. The first tournament of the season will be the KMA on May 10—it is open to all. Hours for this early part of the season are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and they prefer if you phone ahead (250-446-2826) so you aren’t disappointed after a long drive to find that the course is closed that morning due to a heavy frost or something. Rexin said they have four employees now and eight in the summer and they are looking forward to another great season.

Water’s edge the conversation Submitted
On the water’s edge. It’s where we work. It’s where we play. It’s where we live. It is a special place where people can enjoy the view, learn about nature, and benefit from accessing water. The soils, plants and animals found around the edges of lakes, streams and wetlands are shaped by and depend on the presence of water, and are known as riparian ecosystems. When they are healthy, riparian ecosystems filter pollution, provide wildlife habitat, and help recharge groundwater. But they are also vulnerable to development and over-use. Many of our activities near water—building, paving, clearing, grazing animals and mowing— harm riparian habitat, plants and soils. When riparian areas and wetlands are damaged, not only is local habitat lost but increased erosion and sedimentation can impact downstream landowners and fish habitat. Jenny Coleshill, coordinator for the Granby Wilderness Society, is conducting a study on threats to riparian areas across
the Boundary. “Almost everyone directly or indirectly impacts these areas,” said Coleshill. “But we can also all play a role in protecting and restoring wetlands, shorelines and riparian areas.” During floods, our streams and rivers also move around across the floodplain, placing our homes, roads, businesses and farms in harm’s way, as seen last year in Calgary and Colorado. Recently a large segment of the Kettle River west of Midway has been cut off by a new channel, and the local ‘Doukhobor Beach’ west of Grand Forks has been stripped of its sandy lower section. “The regional district will be interested in exploring innovative ideas about riparian and floodplain management from people across the Boundary,” said Grace McGregor, chair of the RDKB board of directors. “We also look forward to learning from the upcoming watershed management plan and the scientific information coming from the riparian study across the watershed.” On April 15, the public is invited to join the RDKB and the

Then from 1 to 4 p.m., Stakeholder Advisory Group Chair Roly Russell and Project Coordinator Graham Watt will lead participants through small-group discussions about the issues and potential solutions. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Training in Midway, BC The Village of Midway, City of Greenwood, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) and the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) would like to host an EMR training to support recruitment for the Midway and Greenwood ambulance stations. In order for the course to proceed, 5-6 new staff would need to be hired and available for training. The course will be provided in Midway. Interested applicants must have a Class 4 drivers licence and clean criminal record. When the new staff begins with BCAS, they work as ‘driver only’ employees during the six month probationary period. Following this, BCAS provides the new staff with EMR training through the JIBC and the employee can then begin providing direct patient care for the community. If you are interested in the opportunity, please contact:

“I propose we begin opposition to this immediately,” Midway Mayor Randy Kappes told his council on their April 7 meeting when a letter from Canada Post proposing ending Saturday half-day wicket service. Midway post office box holders have received notice from the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA) that Canada Post is considering closing the Midway post office wicket on Saturdays. Council received even more formal notice, as Canada Post sent a letter dated March 26, 2014 confirming the closure plan. Council was upset because the Canada Post letter, signed by Local Area Superintendent Darren Smith, offers no opportunity for consultation with the public or local government. Council is concerned that closing the office on Saturday may restrict access for some who use the facility, as the weekend may be their only opportunity to get to the wicket. “Those who work a 9-5 job outside of town for example,” said Councillor Marguerite Rotvold. “This whole process has been totally unnecessary,” said Kappes. “If they had taken some different steps, gone with some different models they wouldn’t have to go through this anyway.” One option mentioned would shift the hours one day per week (such as Thursday) so that the wicket opens later in the morning but closes later that day. This however would not solve the access problem of some US residents who can

only access the wicket on Saturdays. Council voted to send a letter expressing their strong objection to the proposal and demanding a consultation process. Copies of the letter will be sent to the CPAA and MP Alex Atamanenko. *** The village has adopted an anti-bullying policy as required by provincial regulation. *** Midway will support a sixpage letter to Minister of Environment Mary Polak from the Village of Valemount that documents their concerns that the MultiMaterialBC (MMBC) recycling plan is financially unsustainable for small municipalities. Rotvold said the producers of recyclable waste were supposed to come up with a plan for the province. “They came up with a plan but there wasn’t consultations with the public or elected officials,” she explained. “The government just allowed the major producers to come up with a plan.” Councillor Dick Dunsdon raised the additional concern that jobs now held by Boundary residents may no longer be filled by local workforce under the MMBC plan. Councillor Gary Schierbeck made a motion to send a letter of support to Valemount and another “strongly worded” let-

Feist reported the village had received three quotes, with the lowest being $11,160 from Robert Molina. The public works foreman and the administrator recommended acceptance of the Molina bid. Council agreed with the proviso that he has a business license for the village. *** Rotvold reported the regional district has sent a letter to the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources requesting fish habitat biologist and wildlife biologist positions be assigned to the Boundary area. She explained that in the past these positions were filled out of Penticton, now they have moved them to Nelson and the Boundary doesn’t have coverage.

Come join us as we celebrate the West Boundary branch’s This band of merry volunteers has been coming out to the Greenwood Museum every Sunday since January to paint, move and build. When I stopped in to check on their progress they were sharing lunch and laughter. Clockwise from left - Carol and Al Wright, Wendy Higashi, Wayne Campolieto, Liz Mann, Clare Folvik and Thingh Atkinson. Not shown in the picture but regularly at work on any given Sunday afternoon are Reg Gosling and Doreen McLean.
Group readies exhibits
It takes a lot of work to keep a small town museum fresh and interesting and the hard-working team volunteers at the Greenwood Museum have been working every Sunday since January to do just that by creating a couple of new exhibits. Just like any home reno job it takes people skilled as carpenters and handy with a paint brush to make it all happen. This year there are two major new displays opening—the Modiste Dress Shop features a beautiful old sewing machine and cabinet, a pair of handmade beadwork birds made in 1878 and 1908 and many other beautiful artifacts on display. While there check out the photos displayed on the wall. These are reproductions of actual photos in the museum archives of former residents. Also see if you can spot the two mice that have gotten into the shop.
Another new exhibit this year is a hotel lobby that you actually walk right into. The adjoining bar that has been reproduced from a photograph of the former Algoma Hotel in Deadwood. New hardwood flooring from Son Ranch will be laid in time for the May opening. Sitting at the card table is a mannequin dressed as John Jarrett. Jarrett rode with the James-Younger Gang in his earlier years. He died in 1906 at the Sister’s Hospital in Greenwood and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. Another display new this year is an immaculate Canadian military uniform donated by Greenwood resident Len Fehr. If you haven’t stopped at the museum for a year or two you owe yourself a treat. Those who leave a relationship to escape domestic violence often face a dramatic disruption of their financial security as they flee the abuse. An information bulletin released last month offers some encouraging news. Effective December 2012, the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation amended its BC Employment and Assistance Program policy and procedures to streamline the process for these applicants fleeing abuse. The decision about eligibility in these cases is to be expedited and these applicants are to be exempted from the following standard eligibility requirements: • Completion of a work search • Two-Year Financial Independence Test • Employment-Related Obligations Under the revised policy and procedures, a person who identifies as fleeing abuse is now flagged as the highest priority for follow up by ministry staff. The person does not need to be staying in a transition house in order to identify as fleeing abuse. Any application for income assistance begins with the Self Serve Assessment and Application (SSAA) tool found online at eia.gov.bc.ca/bcea.htm The applicant who is fleeing abuse should indicate this on their application (Screen 84 of the SSAA) or identify this during an interview with ministry staff. This ensures that their case receives critical priority. Persons fleeing abuse will receive an eligibility interview within one business day. Verification of the abuse is not required at the time of application. Applicants who do not have access to a computer for the online application may contact the ministry by telephone (1-866-866-0800) or in-person at a local office where ministry staff can assist with the application process. More information about the Community Coordination for Women’s Safety is available online at endingviolence.org/prevention-programs/ccws-program.

Thank You
Westbridge Hall was built in the 1970s with volunteer workers and mostly donated materials. The town of Westbridge has - over the years - disappeared. Westbridge Hall is all that is left. The reason it is still a going concern is - VOLUNTEERS. The Hall has conducted dances, BBQs, exercise classes, Easter Egg hunts, Christmas concerts, etc., etc. None of these would have happened without volunteers. Also, grounds and building maintenance are done by volunteers. The Thrift Shop is also volunteer labour. This spring we have been refreshing (painting and repairing) the inside of the hall. A special Thank You to the work-crew. The hall really looks a lot brighter. To everyone who has volunteered and to everyone who is still volunteering, we would like to say “THANK YOU”. Names are not mentioned for fear of missing someone. One cannot put a value on any particular volunteer - so let’s just say
“You are invaluable”
Neufeld’s Greenhouses is opening on April 15. They expanded one of their buildings over the winter so they start this year with even more greenhouse space than in the past. This is Juanita’s van Kuik’s third year in charge of the business that her mother started 34 years ago. Juanita says that some customers who come still remember her as the little girl on the tricycle. “It started as a mom and pop operation and now it’s a grandma and grandpa operation,” she says with a laugh. You can find Neufeld’s Greenhouses on Facebook.

Wittner honoured Joan Wittner is very much in touch with her inner artistic self. She moved to the Boundary in 1993 and has been a member of the Kettle River Art Club for almost 20 years. That she has acquired many friends was evident as more than 30 people came to the art club last Thursday, April 3 to honour her 80th birthday with a cake and, of course, some beautiful handmade cards. She works in oils, ceramics and pictures of her Brazilian embroidery has featured in the Times in the past. “These are all my friends,” Joan said as she looked around the room. “I can call them anytime and say ‘hi, how are you doing?’ That’s a friend!”

He praised 4-H as a program that focuses on the assets that the kids bring and he reminded everyone that the 4-H motto is “Learn to Do by Doing”. “Kids who go through 4-H are three times more likely to seek post-secondary education,” said Rothwell, “and twice as likely to be involved in their community as adults.” Four years ago Boundary C 4-H ex panded from a beef

It was evident that 4-H is a multi-generational family program. A schedule for the entire evening was posted in the kitchen detailing who was responsible for what and when they were on shift. AGM April 14, 2014
6:30 pm Doors Open
Members of the Midway Community Association held their AGM last Sunday and to make plans for the coming year.
Lucas takes the chair The Midway Community Association (MCA—formerly known as the Midway Community Club) held their annual general meeting on April 6. For the coming year the chair is Janice Lucas, vice-chair Cat Kappes, treasurer is Catherine Stewart and the secretary position is now held by Jenny Simmonds. Kappes said the possibility of sponsoring a Welcome Wagon for Midway has been brought up by a couple of association members and Catherine Stewart volunteered to investigate options and report back to the next meeting. The association will sponsor a dance on June 7 (postponed from May 24). The magician they hired to come to the village last summer may be available to provide a show during Kettle River Days as a fundraiser for the MCA. The magician would work the Kettle River
Day crowd at Riverfront Park and then come to the Community Hall for an in-house show available by admission. The Midway and Beyond Little Theatre Group has been working hard to source grants to develop and equip the Midway Community Hall for use as a theatre. It is hoped they can mount their first production in September or October. Sound, lighting and curtains are coming together thanks to a $1,000 grant-in-aid from Area E, $5,000 for electrical work and curtains from the village, $350 from Dr. Eddie Naude and $2,990 from the Midway Partnership Fund. Theatre director John Hibberson is pursuing other grant opportunities including the purchase of a portable stage system that might be made possible with funding from a Saskatchewan source and additional funding for lights from the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities.
Chapman celebrates at tea Former Greenwood resident Beatrice Chapman’s return to the Greenwood Senior’s Centre for their Spring Tea last Friday, April 4 found the place filled to capacity. As it turns out, Bea was born in Regina on April 4, 1921 so some special celebrations with cake and song were in order. She told the Times that she’d had a teaching
career on the coast working with kids who were then referred to as EMH kids (educationally and mentally handicapped). While listening to her reminiscing about her career it was evident that Bea was the perfect person for that job. She explained her philosophy as, “If you love them, they love you.” Bea and her carpenter husband retired to Greenwood in 1981; he passed away in 1985. She now lives in Phoenix Manor (formerly Abbeyfield) in Grand Forks. She has three kids—one each for Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, she said. When asked if she had any advice on how to make it to 93 she said, “Do what you can for other people and you will make it.”
Doreen Cave (left) congratulates Beatrice Chapman on her 93rd birthday.

Hugs: To Midway Community Association for supporting John Hibberson and his dream of getting the Midway and Beyond Little Theatre Company going in the community hall. Slugs: To the Canada Revenue Agency for not having a secure system for filing taxes online. Maybe it’s time

Hugs: To the volunteers at the Greenwood Museum for all the time and expertise they bring to refresh the museum with new and informative displays. Beets healthy in a number of ways We live in a world that is becoming increasingly toxic. Toxins, when absorbed into our body, mess with many bodily functions and contribute to ill health and premature aging. If we can find ways to reduce our load of toxins we can slow the aging process and maintain a state of health to an older age. One role of our livers is to detoxify the body. In many cases, it uses methyl groups (-CH3) to do this. A very good source of methyl groups is trimethylglycine (with three methyl groups) also known as betaine. The process (called methylation) of adding a methyl group to a compound, in a sense, marks these compounds as toxins and alters them for easier removal from the body. Methyl donors also help to convert homocysteine which is linked to coronary artery and cerebrovascular disease back to methionine. An elevated level of homocysteine is recognized as a
risk factor for premature arteriosclerotic disease (Arteriosclerosis and Thrombosis, Vol. 14(3) March 1994). Having a good source of methyl groups can help combat toxins, which lead to accelerated aging and fight some of the risk factors that contribute to killer diseases. So where does one get a good supply? In many cases of nutrient shortages, there are supplements that isolate and package just what it seems we need but it is usually the case that the closer we can get to a natural source the better. It turns out that a very good source of methyl groups and the best one

in nature is the common garden beet. Beets are easy to grow and not hard to store. It turns out that they are also very healthy in a number of other ways. The wonderful benefits of beets were recognized by Dr. Norman Walker who was also a big advocate of juicing and natural living. He established the Norwalk Laboratory of Nutritional Chemistry and Scientific Research in New York, and died in 1985 at the age of 99. It is well recognized that heart disease is a major killer. Many people will have heard of the benefits of nitric oxide in maintaining cardiovascular health. A study from Queen Mary University of London, found that beet juice increased the levels of nitric oxide in the blood. The study, published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, showed that drinking beet juice lowered blood pressure within 24 hours. I have known of the benefits of

beets for a while and grew a good supply in my garden last summer. In one form or another, I try to eat some most days. I also use a very high quality dried beet juice product. This provides a highly-absorbable iron source and has helped many people who struggled with low iron levels to replenish them and gain more energy in the process. If you are not in a position to grow your own and do not have access to fresh beets, this is a very good alternative. It is also very convenient to just mix some powder in water and enjoy its good taste. It’s a big time saving compared to juicing and you don’t even have to buy a juicer. Beets have many other health benefits as well. Recent research (Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC) has found that increased blood flow to the brain due to beet supplementation improved brain health and helped lower the risk of dementia. profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports.

Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/highway). That said I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. ~ keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
