The first occupants of Mission’s newest care facility began arriving on Wednesday. The Residence at Mission Memorial Hospital opened its doors April 2 to tenants of Abbotsford’s Ebenezer Home. Pleasant View residents will join them next week and everyone should be settled in by the end of the month. A ceremonial opening is being planned for June, said Fraser Health spokesperson Erin Labbe. The Residence was built for $29.5 million and replaces MMH’s extended health unit, the Dr. Stuart Pavilion, which closed in 2011. All residents were moved to Ebenezer at the time. The Residence provides residential care to seniors with complex care needs, dementia, and citizens with acquired brain injury. There are 190 private suites and five double occupancy suites for couples who want to stay together. “The thought and vision of this building has been around recognizing people do better with private rooms,” explained Liz Findlay, residential clinical director for Fraser East. “These are people’s homes.” Each resident will have an activity plan and a meal plan developed to meet their needs. The new three-storey, 28,000-sq.ft. facility will house complex care patients on the second and third floors in neighbourhoods reflecting the community of Mission. Hatzic, Ferndale, Dewdney and Deroche wings are located on the second floor, while the Stave area and Silverdale Respite Hotel are located on the top floor. Each neighbourhood is secured and will have its own dining room, lounge and kitchen that can accommodate about 25 residents. There are also four secure courtyards and six large secure balconies for residents to use. Clients with acute brain injury (ABI), dementia and those

This is the first time Mission is offering care to ABI clients, said Findlay, adding brain injuries are usually sustained from accidents or strokes. An adult day program for non-residents will also be available three days a week to give families and other caregivers a break. A 12-bed respite hotel is also located at the facility. The Residence will

employ about 200 people, including 12 registered nurses, 36 licensed practical nurses, 102 health care assistant and casual employees. All Fraser Health employees who transferred to Ebenezer from the former Dr. Stuart Pavilion will return to Mission to continue their employment. Current Pleasant View employees do not work for Fraser Health and will have to apply to work at The Residence. “So far Fraser Health

has hired 36 Pleasant View employees — this accounts for more than half of Pleasant View’s current staff,” said Labbe, noting recruitment of additional staff for the new facility is ongoing. The Residence and the Community Health Care Centre, which opened last summer, were developed as part of Mission’s campus of care by the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District in 2008 in partnership with Fraser Health and the District of Mission.

I believe it’s an excessive amount.” The issue has been raised in closed council meetings, noted Jewell, who began noticing the situation late last year. Coun. Tony Luck agreed the number of staff leaving is “abnormal,” and several exit interviews have identified low staff morale as one of the biggest problems. Luck didn’t want to elaborate on the issue, but said, “We’re trying to identify where it’s coming from.” The 2012 core services review (CSR) indicated there was an unusual amount of change at the district and staff morale was low, said Jewell, who noted employees were encouraged to participate in the review and he believed the problems existed before it became apparent. At the time the CSR was conducted, there was uncertainty because of change in the organization, said Mission’s chief administrative officer, Ken Bjorgaard, pointing out a new council was elected in the fall of 2011 and his predecessor, Glen Robertson, had announced his retirement after 25 years with the district. “The survey was done at one point in time … I don’t know how statistically verifiable it was,” added Bjorgaard. “We’re all working together to create a better organization. The organization as a whole is healthy fiscally, and is able to now move forward

with major infrastructure projects and has reduced its debt.” Improvements have also been made to address morale issues. “We’ve implemented a respectful workplace policy and we’re trying to improve communications with a civic engagement manager,” he said. Bjorgaard also explained municipalities across B.C. face an aging workforce and as managers in other organizations retire, new career opportunities are created. “We never want to stand in the way of people progressing in their careers.” The CAO believes Mis-

sion already offers competitive salary and benefits packages, but will be reviewing those. “Employees are obviously concerned about the high level of staff turnover,” said CUPE local 1267 president Donna-Lee Lakes, who represents unionized workers at the District of Mission. “When positions are left vacant, or positions are not filled in a timely manner, the remaining employees are left doing their own jobs as well as the duties and responsibilities of the vacant positions.” This affects the health of employees, she added. “On a personal level … it has been difficult to say goodbye to

so many of our co-workers.” Mission Mayor Ted Adlem says he’s not surprised by the turnovers. “Some people are resistant to change,” he said, noting it was time for some to retire and others were offered opportunities to advance their careers. “Change is a good thing.” Council is only responsible for putting the CAO in place, explained Luck. “It’s up to the CAO to make the other hires. He’s taking the time to get the right people in place, and the concern is it’s taking too much time.” Bjorgaard responded, “The hiring process at the District of Mission

has become more formalized and there is a lot more testing and analysis to make sure it is a fit for the district and employee.” “The hiring process is the most important thing organizations do,” said Bjorgaard. “We have to have patience with it.”

Drive home the message

More people are dying in B.C. from distracted driving than impaired driving. The latest data from 2012 shows 81 deaths from distracted driving in the year, compared to 55 related to drinking and driving. That is simply an appalling statistic. Think about it. Yakking on cellphones and texting are killing more people on provincial roads than drunk drivers. Attorney General Suzanne Anton is now considering whether B.C.’s penalties for using smart phones are tough enough. Clearly not. Talking on a hand-held mobile phone currently draws a $167 fine, and emailing or texting while driving earns a $167 ticket plus three demerit points. Obviously, that’s not sufficient penalty to convince literally thousands of motorists to put the phone down or use a hands-free device. In 2013, 51,000 distracted driving tickets were handed out by police officers in this province. That is another stunning statistic, which utterly shouts out the fact that a

huge number of B.C. drivers just aren’t getting it. One more alarming piece of information: B.C. has more distracted driving deaths than Ontario, which has three times the population. It is difficult to understand how the numbers would lead Anton to conclude anything other than a steep increase in distracted driving fines is in order, and quickly. Ontario recently raised its fine from $155 to $280, with a maximum of $500 for those who contest the fine and are convicted. B.C. must follow suit, if not actually go beyond that eastern province’s penalty structure. An extremely sharp pain in the wallet is needed to bring B.C. drivers to their senses – that and a concentrated public awareness campaign similar to the efforts put forth a decade or more ago when impaired driving was creating carnage on the roads. Time to put smart phones in the crosshairs.

Land reserve divided, not conquered Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett has done what I reported last November he was doing: seizing the horns of the sacred cow that is the Agricultural Land Reserve. Henceforth there shall be two land reserves. The Island, South Coast and Okanagan, which produce 85 per cent of B.C.’s total farm revenue on 10 per cent of protected land, retains its strict anti-development rules. In the much larger area Bennett likes to call “beyond Hope,” non-farm uses will be considered to help maintain the many economically marginal farmers. This is the Interior, Kootenay and North, where development pressure is mostly an urban myth. In remote areas, ALR diktats with no relation to reality are routinely ignored. Political critics were quick to call this a BC Liberal hidden agenda to pave the ALR for their developer pals. Certainly neither party’s

2013 platform talked about the ALR, although BC Liberal leadership candidates Kevin Falcon and Mike de Jong promised relief from its more senseless bureaucracy to Peace country farmers in 2011. When the zone plan was revealed last week, media went to ALR pioneer Harold Steves, the hero of all Lower Mainlanders who try to tell northern farmers what to do. “My real fear is that they want to open the door for fracking and natural gas and oil,” Steves said. I’ve got bad news for the socialist sage of south Richmond. Oil and gas companies have operated on farmland since before the ALR was created in 1974. Conspiracy buffs should read the delegation agreement that took effect just weeks after last May’s election, giving the Oil and Gas Commission authority to administer wells, pipelines and waste pits on farmland. If the ALR interferes with the prescribed handling of drilling waste, it interferes with safety measures. University of the Fraser Valley “food security” professor Lenore Newman went on CKNW to refute what she called “uninformed arguments,” and then offered one of her own.

This two-zone change is connected to the exclusion of large tracts of Peace land for the Site C dam, she said.

Once again, this is an urban problem projected onto rural B.C. ... Actually, the government exempted that project last December using the long-standing “provincial interest” provision, so this phase of the alleged capitalist plot against farmland has no effect on Site C. Steves is also concerned about second homes being built beyond Hope, and later sold rather than being destroyed as is the current disastrous rule. He warns that farmers might end up with “non-farm neighbours,” or as we like to call them up north, “neighbours.” Again, this is an urban problem projected onto rural B.C., where costly restric-

tions mainly serve to accelerate the depopulation of rural and remote areas. Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington is livid about the legislation, which has no effect on loss of farmland in her constituency. The growing federally regulated port supersedes provincial laws, and the Tsawwassen First Nation is growing a big shopping centre on its treaty land. Aboriginal entrepreneurs are also starting to force big-box development on southern Vancouver Island, home of the purest of the pure left. This is where farmers can’t even protect themselves against deer. The most damning charge is that the six regional ALR panels now in place are open to corruption under new rules. Panel members have always been cabinet appointments, but currently they have to be from outside the region so they are less likely to hand out exemptions to their friends. That is certainly something to keep an eye on. So is the status of B.C. farms, where the average farmer age is 56 and rising, and half of farms have income less than $10,000 a year. A number of dogs have been attacked by coyotes in the Cedar Valley area recently, with one needing to be put down due to the extent of the wounds. The Gardner’s family dog, a pomeranian named Teako, escaped from the house March 27, then bolted through their next door neighbour’s unfenced yard

and into the greenbelt behind their properties. After searching the area, they found Teako bloodied, bruised, but still alive. Coyotes had preyed upon the animal, said Karen Gardner. They rushed the golden-haired animal to Mission Veterinary Clinic, but his injuries were so severe and would have drastically reduced his quality of life. The family made

I would hate to have any pet owner suffer the way my family and I are now…” Gardner had high praise for the staff at the clinic. “As soon as we walked in they went into amazing action.” Veterinarian Dr. Susan Calverly said any dog less than 20 pounds is a potential coyote target, and that her office has treated four dogs, including Teako, in the past month. She said in one instance, a dog was attacked while it and the owner were out for a walk. The owner had to beat the coyotes back. “At this time of year, coyotes have pups in the den,” Calverly added. BC Conservation Officer Paul McFadden said they’re aware of the problem, and agreed with Calverly that puppy season makes the animals more aggressive. “Coyotes will aggressively protect their pups. They’re as protective as a female black bear,” he said.

Earth Hour savings improved Mission exceeded its power savings during this year’s Earth Hour event on Saturday. The annual event, promoted by BC Hydro, asks citizens to reduce their power consumption from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. March 29. This year, Mission recorded a 1.6 per cent drop in elec-

tricity usage, which equates to 0.49 megawatt hours, according to Hydro. In 2012, the municipality registered a 0.63 per cent drop, and in 2013, a 1.1 per cent reduction was recorded. Provincially, British Columbians saved 65 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial

electricity load by one per cent during Earth Hour – the equivalent of turning off about 1.4 million lights. Earth Hour encourages individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to demonstrate support for climate change reduction efforts. This annual global event is hosted by the WWF.

Country singer Merv Tremblay is set to release his second single this year in just a few weeks and will be donating all proceeds to cancer research. Wish You Were Here was penned about three years ago after a friend died from cancer, said Tremblay, who is playing the song now to support another friend who is terminally ill with cancer. “The song is very close to me … Friendships come in many different ways and sizes and sometimes you’re hit very hard with them.” The Mission musician has been in the business for more than 30 years and says this song is about someone who has lost someone they love, he explained. This person is sitting alone by a fire trying to keep warm because nothing in the world makes that person happy anymore. “You just wish you had that person back with you again,” Tremblay explained. The 2014 Myrtle Evertt Women of the Year awards will be presented on May 14 by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Mission. The awards celebrate

the contributions made by women working and volunteering in their communities. This year’s awards recognize those in the non-profit/ community service and sports/athletics fields.

The Women of the Year Award was created in 1994 and named in honour of its first recipient, Myrtle Evertt, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 87. This is the club’s only

fundraiser for the year to provide bursaries to help local women continue post-secondary education and training.

No Juno for The Anciients Jason Roessle

Local band The Anciients didn’t get the nod at the Juno Awards this past Sunday. The band – which is comprised of two Mission men, Chris Dyck and Ken Cook, along with Aaron Gustafson and Mike Hannay – was nominated for the best metal/hard music album of the year, with their record, Heart of Oak. Edging out the competition was Protest the Hero, which took the honour for its album, Volition. “ I t ’s pretty mind-blowing,” said Dyck of the nomination. “If you would have told me … we would have been nominated for a Juno this year, I would have told

Their album, Heart of Oak, was up against fellow label-mates Gorguts (Coloured Sand), KEN Mode (Entrench), and The Flatliners (Dead Language). Cook classed their music as “a mix of hard rock and definitely some metal aspects.” The band has a wide range of musical influences, including Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy and

more, said Cook. The Anciients formed from the ashes of another local band, Spreadeagle. “When we left Spreadeagle, we didn’t just want to stop. I just wanted to be taken seriously as a songwriter,” said Dyck. “With [The Anciients] we didn’t have a set goal. “But we wanted to have a cool name, cool songs and a cool logo before we even said, ‘Hi.’”

The quartet sees Cook at lead vocals/ guitars, Dyck on guitar/vocals, Aaron Gustafson on bass and Mike Hannay at drums. “We spent thousands of hours refining [our music],” and they rehearsed for a full year before doing their first live show, said Dyck. And their popularity continues to grow. While doing extensive touring throughout the region and province, The Anciients also did 70 shows in the U.S. last year alone. Plans, plants begin to bloom Now that spring is here, Mission’s Communities In Bloom (C in B) Society is gearing up to beautify the community. At its March 19 annual general meeting, members discussed the four programs taking place in Mission this year: Beautify Mission, Streetscapes, BC Day at Jack Pool Harbourside Park, and the school program. Mission will not be participating in the national competi-

tion this year, said C in B president Heather Stewart. “We will do it in 2015.” Mission’s C in B team is focusing its efforts on working with its counterparts in Maple Ridge this year, which is just starting a C in B program, Stewart added. As well, C in B judges have said in prior years that Mission’s marks won’t rise until there are changes downtown, said Stewart. C in B has strength-

ened its partnership with the District of Mission this year, said Stewart, noting the Parks, Recreation and Culture department will be administering the Beautify Mission program and recruiting volunteers and fundraising. Mission boxer Cody Brown wasn’t as busy as he might have expected during a recent tournament in Puerto Rico, but he was successful. The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Heritage Park Secondary was selected for a Canadian team which traveled to

San Juan, the capital city, to take on Puerto Rican fighters. Fighting at 132 pounds, Brown won his opening bout, dropping the first round but winning the next two.

The Mission Stars fell just short of the home-ice championship they were dreaming of at the recent B.C. Tier 2 bantam hockey provincials. But the experience was one the boys won’t soon forget. The host Stars went undefeated during pool play, beating Vanderhoof (7-5), Abbotsford (5-4), Williams Lake (7-3) and Fort St. John (5-2). But after enduring several relentlessly physical games, injury issues hampered Mission in the playoffs – they fell 5-3 to North Shore Winter Club in the semis, then dropped a 4-2 decision in a rematch with Williams Lake in the bronze medal game. “We just ran out of gas,” Stars coach Chane Thomas said. “We weren’t 100 per cent, and it kind of takes the wind out of you.” Hosting the 10-team tourney was a feather in the cap of the Mission Minor Hockey Association, and Thomas said opposing coaches offered overwhelmingly positive feedback. The Stars were thrilled to receive tremendous fan support from the community – they were cheered on by great crowds at the Mission Leisure Centre. “Having coached in other associations over the years, I’ve never seen that kind of support come out for a minor hockey team,” Thomas said.

University celebrates 40 years Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) marked its 40th anniversary with celebrations this week, including an event in Mission. The Fraser Valley was granted its first college in 1974 after residents “hounded” the provincial government for 10 years, said university president Dr. Mark Evered. “The community was really ready and [the school] has grown tremendously. I’m proud of what has been developed here.” The school started with 2,000 students and it now serves more than 15,000. The college became a university-college in 1991 and achieved full university status in 2008. In addition to Mission, there are UFV campuses in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, and Chandigarh, India. While a chart can outline the university’s four-decade history, it cannot capture personal stories, said Evered as he introduced Heather Stewart, one of the university’s first instructors, to the crowd that gathered for the event Wednesday morning. “We taught everywhere at the time,” said Stewart, who recalled being in a building on Coqualeetza grounds, while a friend taught in a church basement. Stewart retired from teaching in 1996, but has kept an eye on the university’s progress. “It hasn’t lost its sense of community,” she noted. UFV now offers 100 programs spanning master’s and bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, certificates, apprenticeship and trades training, and continuing studies. Research activity has faculty and students working together on partnerships, including those with NASA, the Surrey Fire Service, and Natural Resources Canada. HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-selling cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup. Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships. The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. Looks The Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer. Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fine for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is flexible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice? The first two cheaper vehicles sold quickly. The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask? Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the first two. I had no information on the last. So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.” I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back. Four days later, I got a call from a young

She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine. I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to find me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

The sun portion of the package adds a power express open/close sunroof to the mix. After I switched into this mindset, I found I was able to alleviate my frustrations of what the GT didn’t have, but what it did have. It is with great sadness that the family of Wayne Ast must announce his peaceful passing into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on March 27, 2014 beloved brother, uncle, and friend. He was born on May 15, 1944 in Abbotsford to Jacob & Alice Ast. He attended school at Huntingdon Elementary and Abbotsford Jr. In his teenage years he enjoyed polishing and driving his 1956 Chevrolet through old downtown Abbotsford down to the Legion Cafe. He spent his working career driving gravel truck around Fairmont Hot Springs and the lower mainland for his brother Reg. He was known to have the cleanest polished trucks around. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and 4x4ing in the nearby mountains. His hobbies included playing guitar, rock polishing, and racing his Chevy in Sumas prairie with friends. He was known to his friends as easy going, laid back and up for anything. He was known by the family to joke around and play gags on his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Jake and Alice Ast. He is survived by his loving family his brothers Gerry (Marlene), Reg (Louise) and his sister Pat Kettle (Bob) and by their families: Brian (Linda) and daughter Lindsay, April (Bill) and daughter Paige, Cathy (Wayne) and sons Ryan and Jonathan, Greg (Kerry) and children Jordan, Melanie and Cameron, Brenda, Tammy (Kent) and sons Colton and Keaton, Darryl (Denice) and sons Justin, Mason and Tristen. He was laid to rest with his parents at Hazelwood Cemetery in a private family ceremony. A celebration of his life will be held in May 2014. John Wayne (Jack) Robertson, 71 of Mission, BC passed away March 28, 2014. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Juliette, daughters Deidra, Renée (Jared), and Randi, grandchildren Jaiden and Casey, and by his siblings, Joseph and Sherry. He will be lovingly remembered by many dear relatives including the Lizotte, Proulx and Lambke families and missed by countless friends, near and far. He was predeceased by his parents John and Eleanor, and by his son, John Albert. Born June 8, 1942, Jack grew up in Roblin, MB. In 1966, he married his beautiful bride and they moved to BC, and to Mission in 1975. He spent his career in the flexographic printing industry, first as a pressman, then as production supervisor and finally in press ink sales. Jack was fiercely proud and loyal, with an extremely quick wit and sharp mind. He enjoyed golfing, taking road trips, playing cards, doing crosswords puzzles, and beating everyone at Jeopardy. Family and friends are welcome to attend service Thursday, April 3, at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mission. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the Kidney Foundation of Canada, who gave support generously during Jack’s last years.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tobias into the presence of his Lord. His life ended suddenly in a tragic car accident, along with two co-workers, on Highway 33 near Sedley, SK on his way home from work. He will be remembered by his wife, Daniela (Fast) and his young daughter, Annabel. As well as, his parents, John and Irina Friesen, siblings Daniela (Ronny with Eric, Katie, Caleb), Markus (Marilyn with Noah, Makayla), Johnny, Joseph (Danae). Tobias Friesen was born in Salzkotten, Germany on May 14, 1984. He immigrated to Canada, as a young boy, with his family and eventually settled in Abbotsford, BC. He met his wife, Daniela Fast, at TREK in the summer of 2010 and they were married on August 26, 2011. He became a proud father to Annabel on February 10, 2013. Last October, he moved his family to White City, SK for his employment as an electrician. Toby enjoyed many activities including travelling, reading, hunting, fishing, camping, working with the youth at King Road MB Church and at TREK, playing games and sports including hockey, snowboarding and rollerblading. Toby gave his life over to Jesus Christ at the young age of 11 and was baptized at age 24 in Thailand. He shared his love for his Saviour with everyone he met. He had a genuine love for people, sharing his big bear hugs with all. Although Toby’s life on this earth was short he lived his life to eventually hear the words “well done good and faithful servant”.
